The study describes the changes with time in gene and genotype frequencies of a closed Chios herd. Genomic DNA was isolated and purified from peripheral blood leucocytes using standard procedures. The identification of the allelic variants present in the DNA samples, was performed in a simple multiplex PCR reaction and melting curve analysis of the PrP gene. Only ARR/ARR female genotypes were kept for breeding, and only males of the same genotype were used following year 2 of the study. As a result of planned individual matings and selection, the susceptible ARQ/ARQ genotype was eliminated from the flock in 4 years. The gene frequency of the R allele from a low 0.056 at year 1 reached a high 0.911 at year 6 of the study. Data from first lactation ewes of known genotypes were used to examine possible associations between PrP genotypes and ewe reproductive (litter size at birth and at weaning) and production traits (litter weight at birth and at weaning and 60-day milk yield after weaning). No effects of the sire genotype (ARR/ARR and ARR/ARQ) were found for any of the traits studied. The ewe genotype was associated with performance for reproductive traits but not with total weight of lamb output at birth or at weaning. ARR/ARR ewes had a higher litter size at birth (2.09) compared to ARQ/ARQ ewes (1.79) and higher litter size at weaning (1.84) compared to ARR/ARQ ewes (1.59). 60-day milk yield after weaning was not influenced by genotype (114.8, 105.8 and 114.8 kg for ARR/ARR, ARR/ARQ and ARQ/ARQ genotypes, respectively). Birth weight and 98-day weight were not influenced by the lamb genotype. ARQ/ARQ lambs were slightly heavier (P < 0.05) than ARR/ARR lambs at weaning as a result of faster pre-weaning growth. The objectives of this study were to estimate effects of sire breed (Dorset, Finnsheep, Romanov, Texel, and Montadale), and dam breed (Composite III and Northwestern whiteface) on survival, growth, carcass, and composition traits of F1 lambs. Effects of mating season (August, October, and December) were estimated for survival and growth traits. Data were collected on 4,320 F1 lambs sired by 102 purebred rams over 3 yr. Birth weight was recorded on all lambs, and subsequent BW were adjusted to 56 (weaning), 70, and 140 d of age (n = 3,713, 3,654, and 3,579 observations, respectively). Survival of dam-reared progeny (n = 4,065) to weaning was recorded. Each year, wethers from October matings were slaughtered in three groups at 25, 29, and 33 wk of age to obtain carcass data (n = 546). In addition to standard carcass traits, resistive impedance measurements were recorded on the warm carcass to predict lean mass. Dam breed (P = 0.37) did not influence lamb survival to weaning, but sire breed (P < 0.05) was important. Romanov-sired lambs excelled in survival rate to weaning (94.1%), followed by Finn-sheep (93.0%), Texel (90.7%), Dorset (90.0%), and Montadale (89.1%) sired progeny. Lower (P < 0.01) postweaning growth rate was observed for Texel (267 g/d) and Finnsheep (272 g/d) sired progeny than for Dorset (285 g/d), Montadale (282 g/d), and Romanov (278 g/d) sired progeny. Sire breed and dam breed were generally significant for most carcass traits. Breed differences in distribution of carcass fat and carcass shape were detected; however, carcass composition was similar for all sire breeds when compared at a constant carcass weight. When evaluated at a constant 12th-rib fat depth, carcasses of lambs from Finnsheep, Romanov, and Texel sires produced 1 to 1.5 kg less (P < 0.001) predicted lean mass per lamb than carcasses of lambs from Dorset and Montadale sires. These experimental results provide information about the direct breed effects for survival, growth, and carcass traits of these breeds and their potential use in crossbreeding systems.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate and estimate the associations of the ovine prion protein (PrP) genotypes with a wide range of performance traits in Scottish Blackface lambs. Performance records of up to 7,138 sheep of known PrP genotypes born from 1999 to 2004 in 2 experimental farms were utilized. Performance traits studied were BW at birth, marking (when the sheep were identified with permanent ear tags at an average age of 52 d), and weaning (average age of 107 d); slaughter traits (BW at slaughter, slaughter age, carcass weight, and carcass conformation); ultrasonic muscle and fat depths; and computerized tomography-predicted carcass composition and carcass yield at weaning. Different linear mixed models, including random, direct animal effect, and up to 3 maternal effects (genetic, permanent, and temporary environmental) were used for the different traits. The PrP genotype was included in the model as a fixed effect, along with other fixed factors with significant effects (P < 0.05). Five separate analyses were carried out for each trait, differing in the method of PrP genotypic classification. The first analysis was based on classifying the sheep into categories according to all 9 available PrP genotypes. In the other 4 analyses, sheep were categorized according to the number of each PrP allele carried. Results showed that there were no significant differences between PrP genotypes for any of the performance traits studied when all 9 genotypes were compared (first analysis). Similarly, performance of the lambs did not significantly differ between genotypes with different numbers of ARR copies. However, there were significant variations in a few traits with respect to the number of ARQ, AHQ, and VRQ alleles carried. Heterozygous lambs for the AHQ or the ARQ allele were significantly heavier at some ages than lambs of the other genotypes. Lambs carrying the VRQ allele required approximately 10 d longer finishing time (P = 0.01) and yielded carcasses approximately 0.5 kg heavier (P = 0.03) compared with noncarriers. The few significant associations found do not have a negative influence on performance when selecting against the most susceptible PrP allele (VRQ) or in favor of the most resistant one (ARR). Overall, there were no major associations of PrP genotypes with most lamb performance traits in Scottish Blackface sheep.  相似文献

From an extensive series of trials involving approximately 15 000 Romney ewes mated with 435 rams, provisional results are presented on the comparative performance of 14 sire breeds for lamb meat production. The breeds, each represented by ten or more rams, were Southdown, Suffolk, South Suffolk, Hampshire, Dorset Down, South Dorset Down, Poll or Horn Dorset, Border Leicester, English Leicester, Ryeland, Cheviot, Lincoln, Merino and Romney.Important differences exist between sire breeds in progeny survival, with the Southdown being best and the Romney poorest. Progeny of long-wool sires, and particularly the Lincoln, clip more wool at post-weaning shearing than of the Down breeds, which exhibit quite small variation.Sire breeds vary in average live-weight and carcass growth of their progeny, the Suffolk, Hampshire and Dorset breeds producing the heaviest and Merino and Romney the lightest lambs. In terms of lamb live-weight or carcass production per Romney ewe mated, Romney, Merino, Lincoln, Ryeland, Cheviot and English Leicester sires are inferior to the Southdown while Dorset, Suffolk, South Suffolk and Dorset Down are superior.Within any breed, wide differences exist between progeny growth rates of the best and poorest sires, emphasising the importance of sound selection of rams and of adequate genetic sampling in breed comparisons.  相似文献

Three thousand one hundred and ninety-three Merino-breeding males were genotyped for Scrapie-resistance gene. They showed a high frequency of ARQ allele while VRQ allele frequency, linked to the highest susceptibility, was close to 0. Alleles linked to Scrapie-susceptibility frequencies have been studied in different Merino flocks. Most of the variability is intraflock, not interflock. In addition, there is an excess of heterozygotes due to crossbreeding or Wahlund effect.

Five control and prevention strategies were studied: first genotyping males and females and eliminating VRQ carriers and ARQ/ARQ rams; second genotyping males and females and eliminating VRQ carriers; third genotyping males and eliminating VRQ carriers and ARQ/ARQ rams; fourth genotyping males and using only as breeders ARR/ARR, ARR/AHQ, AHQ/AHQ and ARQ/ARQ rams; fifth genotyping males and using only as breeders ARR/ARR, ARR/AHQ and AHQ/AHQ rams. They were simulated from allelic and genotypic frequencies to decide which animals had to be genotyped and which animals had to be eliminated due to their genotypes and risk levels. The third option, to genotype rams and to eliminate ARQ/ARQ and VRQ carriers, would be the best strategy to improve the resistance and would cause minimal cost and loss of animals.  相似文献

There is concern about potential antagonistic correlated responses due to intensive selection for scrapie-resistant haplotypes of the prion (PRNP) gene in sheep. The objective of the present research was to test for associations of PRNP haplotypes for codons 136, 154, and 171 with growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in an F2 Dorset x Romanov population (n = 415) segregating the 2 callipyge alleles. Haplotypes of the 3 PRNP codons were determined for each sheep, and breed of origin of each gamete was predicted by genotyping 6 microsatellite markers flanking the PRNP locus. Twenty-five growth, carcass, and meat quality traits were evaluated. Data were analyzed using a basic model consisting of fixed effects of year, sex, and callipyge genotype, the random effect of sire, and 7 covariates corresponding to the probability that a lamb inherited a specific PRNP haplotype of either Dorset or Romanov origin. A fixed effect of litter size was added to the model for growth traits. The model for carcass traits contained the linear and quadratic effects of chilled carcass weight and the interactions among callipyge genotype and linear and quadratic terms. For meat quality traits, the model contained chilled carcass weight as a covariate and the interaction between callipyge genotype and chilled carcass weight. A contrast between the resistant ARR haplotype and the average effect of other PRNP haplotypes was tested to investigate the effects of potential selection for ARR within each breed of origin (Dorset, ARR vs. ARQ, VRQ, and AHQ; Romanov, ARR vs. ARQ and VRQ). There was limited evidence that selecting for scrapie resistance would cause correlated responses due to linkage disequilibrium. Associations of only 3 traits with PRNP haplotypes were detected in either breed of origin. In Romanov, the ARR haplotype was associated with longer carcasses (P < 0.013), narrower rumps (P = 0.038), and less marbling (P = 0.022) than the average of ARQ and VRQ haplotypes. No significant contrasts were detected for Dorset. This study is the first to account for breed of origin while investigating haplotype associations in an F2 population. This study provided limited evidence of associations between PRNP haplotypes and growth, carcass, and meat quality traits.  相似文献

Ram lambs were selected from a total of 1206 lambs in 8 industry Coopworth ram breeding flocks. Eight rams were selected randomly (one from each flock), 8 were selected on the basis of a low live weight-adjusted ultrasonic backfat thickness (lean) and 8 for a high post-weaning growth rate (PW gain). Rams from a Coopworth line specially selected and bred for low ultrasonic backfat (lean selection) were also included in the progeny test in which the rams were single sire mated to 1.5 year old Coopworth ewes. Birth and weaning weights were recorded for a total of 474 female and 371 male progeny. The males (progeny of 31 sires) were slaughtered between January and April at an average hot carcass weight (HCW) of 12.56 kg and carcass growth and carcass fatness parameters recorded. The carcass composition data were analysed using the allometric equation by covariance on HCW. The adjusted mean values of carcass water content were significantly higher for the progeny of the lean selection rams (7.58 kg) than forthe other 3 sire classes (7.49, 7.46 and 7.41 for the lean, PW gain and controls respectively) indicating that they were leaner. Other indicators of carcass fatness also revealed marked differences between the sire classes. There were also marked effects of slaughter date with lambs slaughtered earlier being leaner (after adjustment for HCW) than lambs slaughtered later in the season. The results indicate that selection of sires on the basis of ultrasonic backfat thickness or post weaning live weight gain can be expected to result in the production of leaner lamb carcasses.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the association between the haplotypes of the prion protein (PrP) locus and several reproductive and lamb weight traits in Ripollesa sheep. Prion protein genotypes were available for a total of 310 sheep (7 rams, 114 ewes, and 189 lambs), all of them belonging to the purebred Ripollesa flock of the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona, for which all sheep had a known pedigree. In addition, the genotype of 24 historical descendants of the previously genotyped adult individuals was reconstructed, provided that both parents were homozygous for PrP haplotypes. Only 3 haplotypes (ARR, ARQ, and ARH) were observed in the PrP locus of the sheep sampled. Reproductive traits included conception rate and litter size, whereas birth BW and 90-d BW were the lamb weight traits studied. The additive effect of PrP haplotypes was analyzed through Bayesian animal threshold and linear models, for reproduction and weight traits, respectively. Ewe reproductive data belonged to 89 ewes that gave 492 conception rate records and 440 litter size records. Analyses of BW at birth and at 90 d of age were made on 323 and 164 lamb records, respectively. No associations between PrP haplotypes and conception rate and BW traits were observed. For litter size, the effect of the ARH haplotype was greater than that of the ARQ haplotype. Differences between ARH and ARR haplotypes also suggested an advantage for the ARH. As a whole, our results indicated that the selection favorable to increase litter size in Ripollesa ewes may also increase the ARH haplotype frequency, which contradicts the recommendations of the current European Union legislation aiming to increase the genetic resistance to scrapie. As a consequence, scrapie genotyping needs to be included as a new selection criterion in the breed.  相似文献

This study investigated associations of prion protein (PrP) genotype with body composition and weight traits of Scottish Blackface ewes. Body composition was predicted using computer tomography (CT) scans to estimate muscle, carcass fat, internal fat, and bone weights. The traits were measured at 4 key seasonal production points (pre-mating, pregnancy, midlactation, and weaning) over 4 production cycles (2 to 5 yr old). There were 2,413 records for each of the CT traits measured on 335 ewes, and 26,649 records for each of the body condition score and BW traits for 2,356 ewes. From 1999 to 2004, animals were genotyped to determine polymorphisms at codons 136, 154, and 171, which are associated with scrapie susceptibility. Four alleles were found in the population (ARR, AHQ, ARQ, and VRQ). The data were analyzed using a linear mixed random regression model assuming that the direct additive genetic effect was a 2nd order Legendre polynomial function of time. The PrP genotype was included in the model as a fixed effect along with other fixed factors with significant effects (P < 0.05). Five separate analyses were carried out for each trait, depending on the method of classifying the PrP genotype. In the first analysis, animals were categorized according to the genotype. Only the 5 most common genotypes (ARR/ARR, ARR/AHQ, ARR/ARQ, AHQ/ARQ, and ARQ/ARQ) were included. In the last 4 analyses, animals were categorized according to the number of each PrP allele carried. For CT traits and body condition score, results showed that the PrP genotype has no association with the overall mean of the traits (averaged over age). For BW, ewes without the ARQ allele were at least 0.5 kg heavier than ARQ homozygous and heterozygous ewes. On the other hand, there was a significant interaction between PrP genotype and age of the ewe (i.e., the effect of PrP genotype was not the same at different ages for 5 out of the 6 traits studied). In general, ARQ carrying ewes mobilized more fat reserves at times of nutrient deficiency, such as during lactation, and gained it back more quickly by the mating season (when nutrients became abundant) than non-ARQ carriers. Therefore, selecting against this allele would have consequences on BW and seasonal mobilization of body reserves. The number of VRQ alleles (the most scrapie susceptible allele) carried was not significantly associated with any of the traits.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to compare the progeny of 1) late-maturing beef with dairy breeds and 2) Charolais (CH), Limousin (LM), Simmental (SM) and Belgian Blue (BB) sires bred to beef suckler dams, for feed intake, blood hormones and metabolites, live animal measurements, carcass traits and carcass value in bull and steer production systems. The bull system included 50 late-maturing beef breeds and 22 Holsteins (HO) slaughtered at approximately 15 months of age, whereas the steer system consisted of 56 late-maturing beef breeds and 23 British Friesians (FR) slaughtered at approximately 24 months of age. Beef breeds were suckled until approximately 8 months of age, while dairy breeds were artificially reared until weaning at approximately 3 months of age. All animals were finished on an ad libitum concentrate diet. Mean live weight, live weight gain, carcass gain and feed efficiency were greater (P < 0.05) in beef than dairy breeds in both systems during the finishing period when offered concentrates. Although there was no difference in feed intake between beef and dairy breeds, intake expressed relative to live weight was lower (P < 0.001) in beef breeds in both systems. At 10 months of age and pre-slaughter, beef breeds had higher (P < 0.001) muscularity scores and greater scanned muscle depth (P < 0.001) than their dairy contemporaries. Carcass weight, kill-out proportion, carcass conformation score, meat proportion and value were greater (P < 0.001) and carcass fat and bone proportions were lower (P < 0.05) in beef than dairy breeds in both systems. Insulin concentrations were lower (P < 0.001) in beef than dairy breeds, whereas there was no difference in blood metabolites or IGF-1 concentrations. Feed intake expressed relative to live weight or feed efficiency did not differ between CH, LM, SM or BB sired progeny. Muscularity scores were greater (P < 0.05) in BB than SM, whereas skeletal scores were lower (P < 0.05) in LM than SM. Limousin had lower (P < 0.05) carcass gain per day of age than CH and SM, whereas SM had a lower (P < 0.05) carcass conformation score than BB and CH and a higher (P < 0.05) carcass fat score than CH. Simmental had a lower (P < 0.05) carcass meat proportion and a higher (P < 0.05) carcass fat proportion than CH, LM and BB, which were similar (P > 0.05). The improvement obtained for beef over dairy breeds in live weight gain was 12%, while the improvements in carcass gain and meat produced was 24% and 33%, respectively. This demonstrates that the importance of carcass data contributing to breed comparison studies cannot be over-emphasised.  相似文献

A crossbreeding experiment was carried out to determine the sire breed effects on fattening performance of fat-tailed lambs. Rams from four Iranian fat-tailed sheep breeds, namely Kurdi (K), Afshari (A), Chaal (C) and Sanjabi (S) were mated to Kurdi ewes producing 454 progeny of four genotype groups (KK, AK, CK and SK). A total of 80 lambs comprising ten female and ten male lambs from each genotype group were used in a fattening experiment during a period of 88 days. Genotype of the lamb had significant effect on average dry matter intake (ADMI) (P < 0.05). SK lambs had the lowest ADMI. Average daily gain (ADG) and food conversion ratio (FCR) were not influenced by genotype of the lamb. Sex of the lamb had significant effect on both ADG and FCR (P < 0.01). Slaughter weight (SLW), hot carcass weight (HCW), cold carcass weight (CCW) and daily carcass gain (DCG) were not affected by lamb's genotype. However, genotype had significant effect on dressing percentage, carcass loss percentage (P < 0.01), carcass length (CL), leg circumference (LC), carcass compactness (CC) (P < 0.01) and carcass density (CD) (P < 0.05). Carcass width (CW) and leg length (LL) were not affected by lamb's genotype. Sex of the lamb had significant effects on CL, CW, LC, CC, CD (P < 0.01) and LL (P < 0.05). The results indicated the existence of sire breed difference for daily dry matter intake and carcass conformation in the fat-tailed sheep.  相似文献

Scrapie is one of several transmissible spongiform encephalopathies of livestock. Disease susceptibility is linked to polymorphisms in the normal prion protein gene that encodes the mammalian prion precursor. Codon 171 of this gene is a major determinant of scrapie susceptibility. Selection for arginine (R) at codon 171 is encouraged by the USDA to decrease the incidence of scrapie. Objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of R allele variants at codon 171 in a sample of sheep from five breeds (Columbia, Hampshire, Rambouillet, Suffolk, and Targhee) and western white-faced commercial ewes and to determine whether the R allele is associated with ewe and lamb production traits. Genotyping was performed on 532 ewes and 901 lambs from the University of Wyoming flock, in addition to 820 rams from 52 sheep producers from Wyoming and surrounding areas, using a DNA mismatch assay that discriminated the R allele from others at codon 171. Genotyping was performed by DNA sequencing on 127 rams representing all breeds, except Hampshire from the USDA Sheep Experiment Station at Dubois, ID. The 171R allele was found in all five breeds and in the commercial western white-faced ewes. Genotype frequencies varied (P < 0.001) by breed in ewe and ram populations. Influence of R-allele frequency on ewe lambing records and individual lamb records was analyzed for Columbia (62, 161, 121), Hampshire (89, 193, 162), Rambouillet (87, 179, 133), Suffolk (67, 178, 161), and commercial sheep (227, 463, 324) for numbers of ewes, total number of ewe production records, and individual lamb records, respectively. Suffolk ewes without the R allele (non-R/non-R) gave birth to more (P or= 0.08) by ewe genotype. Lamb birth and weaning weights were not influenced (P >or= 0.12) by lamb genotype in any of the breeds or in the commercial flock. In this population, ultimate lamb production was only influenced by genotype at codon 171 in the Suffolk flock.  相似文献

In Ireland, a new beef genetic index has been developed. Growth rate is expressed as expected progeny difference for carcass weight (EPDCWT) and is estimated on an across-breed basis. Cross-breeding of dairy cows with both Aberdeen Angus and Belgian Blue beef sires is widely practised. The objective of this study was to compare blood metabolites, slaughter traits and carcass composition of progeny from Holstein–Friesian dairy cows and Aberdeen Angus (AA), Belgian Blue (BB), Friesian (FR) and Holstein (HO) sires. The AA and BB sires were selected, within breed, to be of either high (H) or low (L) estimated genetic merit for carcass weight. A total of 170 male progeny from spring-calving cows and 42 sires (10 AA, 13 BB, 7 FR and 12 HO) were artificially reared indoors and managed together until the end of their second grazing season when they were assigned to either a Light (560 kg) or Heavy (620 kg) slaughter weight. Blood metabolite concentrations were measured six times throughout life and feed intake was recorded during the first and second winter. Carcass measurements and selected non-carcass components were recorded after slaughter and the right side of each carcass was dissected into lean, fat and bone. Differences in blood metabolite concentrations amongst genetic groups were negligible although there were some effects of the prevailing level of nutrition. M. longissimus area scaled for carcass weight was 0.220, 0.221, 0.260, 0.255, 0.212 and 0.208 (SE 0.004) cm2/kg for AAH, AAL, BBH, BBL, FR and HO, respectively. Carcass measurements scaled for carcass weight were greater for L, AA, HO and the dairy strains than for H, BB, FR and the beef breeds, respectively. There was no effect of estimated genetic merit for carcass weight on carcass composition. Statistically significant interactions between genetic merit and beef breed existed for some traits with the genetic merit effect largely evident for AA only. BB and the beef breeds had more lean, less fat and more high value lean in the carcass than AA and the dairy strains, respectively. It is concluded that genetic group had little effect on blood metabolite concentrations but there were some feeding level effects. Estimated genetic merit for carcass weight affected carcass weight, m. longissimus area and carcass measurements scaled for carcass weight but the effects were confined to AA. There were large effects of beef breed and dairy strain on carcass composition.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of initial live weight, level of grain feeding, and length of finishing period on weight gain and carcass traits of dairy steers that had grazed semi-natural grasslands. Steers were subdivided by initial live weight (low vs. high) and were fed two levels of grain (0.5% vs. 1.0% of live weight day− 1) during three different lengths of finishing period (3, 5 vs. 8 months). In total, 192 steers, initially 18 to 21 months of age, were fed grass–clover silage ad libitum. Steers fed high levels of grain had a higher dietary feed intake than steers fed low levels of grain (10.5 vs. 9.7 kg DM day− 1; P < 0.001). Carcass weight gain (630 g) was highest and feed conversion (169 MJ metabolizable energy per kg carcass gain) was best in steers with 5 months of finishing. Steers with low initial weights had a higher daily carcass weight gain than initially heavy steers (614 vs. 571 g, P = 0.013). A high initial weight and a long finishing period resulted in heavier and fatter carcasses with a higher conformation score and lower proportions of valuable retail cuts and bone. In conclusion, high-quality carcasses can be produced when finishing dairy steers that previously have grazed semi-natural grasslands. Performance and carcass traits were more effected by initial weight and length of finishing period than by level of grain feeding.  相似文献

PrP polymorphisms influence the scrapie susceptiblility of sheep. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between performance traits and the PrP genotype in the sheep breeds German black-headed and German white-headed mutton, Bleu du Maine, German mutton merino, Leine, Texel and Suffolk from Lower Saxony and Westphalia. We analysed performance traits such as scores for muscle mass, type and wool quality and the calculated daily weight gain using linear animal models. In all seven breeds no statistically significant associations were found between performance traits and the occurrence of ARR alleles, and the ARR/ARR genotypes, respectively. All genotyped sheep of all breeds investigated showed significantly superior performance traits in comparison to the non-genotyped animals.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the carcass characteristics of Hanwoo (Korean cattle) from different sex conditions, raising altitudes and slaughter seasons. The total number of cattle used in this study was 3608 heads which comprised of 1336 bulls and 1660 steers. The data was analyzed according to sex condition (bull and steer), raising altitude (low: 0–100 m and high: 700–800 m) and slaughter season (spring, summer, autumn and winter). At 24 h post-slaughter, the carcasses were weighed and evaluated for carcass traits according to the Korean carcass grading standard by an official grader. Carcass weight, ribeye area, yield index and grade, and meat color, firmness and maturity scores of carcass from bulls were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than those from steers. Inversely, the backfat thickness, marbling score and quality grade of carcass from steers were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than those from bulls. The maturity score of carcass from a high area was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that from a low area. The ribeye area of carcass from summer was significantly smaller (P < 0.05) than that from other seasons. The maturity score of carcass from the summer season was highest among that from other seasons and the lowest was that from the winter season. Marbling score and carcass quality grade from the winter season were highest among those from other seasons and the lowest were those from the autumn season. There were no significant interactions between sex condition and raising altitude on carcass traits except the ribeye area. There were significant interactions between sex condition and slaughter season on marbling score and carcass quality grade. There were no significant interactions between raising altitude and slaughter season on all of the carcass traits. There were significant interactions among sex condition, raising altitude and slaughter season on meat color score. It was concluded that sex condition affected muscle and fat depositions on the carcass, raising altitude affected maturity and slaughter season affected ribeye area, maturity and marbling.  相似文献

In this study we show that selection based on progeny testing is able to induce a rapid change in allele frequency, even when a fairly broad and balanced breeding goal is applied. The myostatin 3'-UTR mutation (c.*1232G>A) previously found to affect muscularity in Texel sheep is also present in the Norwegian White Sheep population. By genotyping the rams used for artificial insemination (born in1977-2006), a rapid increase in the c.*1232G>A allele frequency was observed, from 0.31 in 1990 to 0.82 in 2006. The major increase was observed after BLUP-based breeding values and the EUROP classification system for carcass quality was implemented in 1991 and 1996, respectively. The MSTN frameshift mutation c.960delG, recently identified in this population, did not show a similar increase in allele frequency during the same period, in spite that it has a strong desirable effect on meat and fat traits. The results also illustrate that unwanted side effects can rapidly be introduced into a population using an efficient breeding scheme. A system for monitoring changes in phenotypic traits additional to those under selection is therefore recommended to identify possible side effects at an early stage.  相似文献

A QTL for muscle hypertrophy has been identified in the Belgian Texel breed. A population of F2 and backcross lambs created from crosses of Belgian Texel rams with Romanov ewes was studied. Effects on carcass traits and muscle development of the Belgian Texel breed polygenes and Belgian Texel single QTL were compared. In both cases, carcass conformation and muscularity were improved. The Texel polygenic environment improved conformation mainly through changes in skeletal frame shape. Segments were shorter and bone weight lower. Muscles were more compact, shorter, and thicker. The single QTL affected muscle development. Thickness and weight of muscles were increased. Composition in myosin changed toward an increase of fast contractile type. The relative contribution of hind limb joint to carcass weight was increased. Differences in skeletal frame morphology among the three genotypes of the single QTL were small. Conformation scoring was mainly influenced by leg muscularity. Back and shoulder muscle development, which largely contributed to variability of muscularity, were less involved in the conformation scoring. Lastly, the QTL explains a small part of differences between these Belgian Texel and Romanov breeds for conformation or muscle development. A large part of genetic variability remains to be explored.  相似文献

The allele and genotype frequencies of the prion protein gene (PrP), known to have an impact on scrapie susceptibility, were determined by real-time PCR for 500 Quebec purebred rams. Molecular beacons were very efficient in discriminating the 5 alleles investigated. Polymorphisms at coding positions 136, 154, and 171 of the PrP gene were analyzed using 3 separate real-time PCR reactions and a total of 7 molecular beacons. A total of 4 different alleles (ARQ, ARR, AHR, and VRQ) were observed at different frequencies among the 7 breeds of sheep investigated. Results show that more than 50% of the rams in every breed carried at least one ARR allele, which is considered the most resistant to scrapie. The susceptibility ARQ allele was also present in every breed and together with the ARR allele, they were the most frequent alleles found in Quebec rams. The VRQ allele associated with the highest susceptibility to scrapie occurred in 5 of the 7 breeds, although at low frequencies. Overall, the results indicate that the frequencies of PrP alleles and genotypes in common breeds of sheep in Quebec make it feasible to reduce scrapie risk by selective breeding.  相似文献

We carried out a genetic association study between five nucleotide polymorphisms (5′UTR microsatellite ((TG)n), nt‐7(C>A), L24V, DelR242 and Intron 1 microsatellite) of the GHSR1a gene and growth and carcass traits in 1285 steers sired by 117 Japanese Black bulls in a progeny testing program. We report herein, a significant association between the 5′UTR microsatellite and nt‐7(C>A) loci and growth and carcass traits. We also propose a translational hypothesis that the association is due to differences in the secondary structure of GHSR1b mRNA (the non‐spliced type with the 5′UTR microsatellite) among the GHSR1a gene haplotypes. Furthermore, we predicted the potential increase in profitability due to increased carcass weight in cow‐calf fattening enterprises through planned matings based on DNA testing of the 5′UTR microsatellite. Statistical analysis revealed that the 5′UTR microsatellite locus had a significant additive effect on carcass weight (CW) and average daily gain (ADG), but not on beef marbling score (BMS). One of the four major microsatellite alleles (19‐TG allele) with an allele frequency of 0.145, had a significantly (P < 0.0007) desirable effect on CW and ADG. We concluded that the 19‐TG allele could potentially be economically useful nucleotide markers for growth and carcass traits in Japanese Black cattle.  相似文献
