A comparative slaughter trial was conducted with 36 F1 Nellore x Red Angus calves (12 steers, 12 bulls, and 12 heifers), averaging 274 kg of BW, to assess the net requirements of protein and energy for growth and maintenance. Three cattle from each group (i.e., steers, bulls, and heifers) were slaughtered at the beginning of the trial to determine the initial body composition. The remaining calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: maintenance (diet containing 70% of DM as corn silage fed at 1.2% of BW daily) or concentrate at 0.75 or 1.5% of BW daily with corn silage available for ad libitum consumption. The diets were isonitrogenous (2% N, DM basis). The experimental design provided ranges in ME intake, BW, and ADG for the development of regression equations to predict the maintenance requirements for NE and net protein (MRNE and MRNP, respectively) and the growth requirement for NE and net protein (GRNE and GRNP, respectively). After 84 d of growth, the cattle were slaughtered. The cleaned gastrointestinal tracts, organs, carcasses, heads, hides, tails, feet, blood, and tissues were weighed to measure empty BW (EBW). These parts were ground separately and subsampled for chemical analyses. For each animal within a period, DMI was measured daily and samples of feces were collected to determine diet digestibility. There were no differences in MRNE (P = 0.06) among groups. The combined data indicated a MRNE of 71.2 kcal x kg(-0.75) of EBW x d(-1), with a partial efficiency of use of ME to NE(m) of 0.71. The partial efficiency of use of ME to NE for growth was 0.54 for bulls, 0.47 for steers, and 0.54 for heifers. The GRNE for steers and heifers were similar (P = 0.15) but were 18.7% greater (P = 0.03) for steers and heifers than for bulls. The MRNP did not differ among groups and averaged 2.53 g of CP x kg(-0.75) of EBW x d(-1). Likewise, GRNP was not different among groups. The percentage of retained energy deposited as protein (RE(p)) increased as the content of retained energy in the gain (RE(c), Mcal/kg of empty body gain) decreased. The RE(p) equation of the pooled data was 46.5 x e(-0.2463 x RE(c)). We conclude that the energy requirement of crossbred Bos indicus x Bos taurus for maintenance might be less than that of purebred Bos taurus and that RE(p) is nonlinearly, negatively correlated with RE(c). The GRNE was less for bulls than for steers and heifers. However, we found no differences in MRNE, MRNP, and GRNP for bulls, steers, and heifers of Nellore x Red Angus crossbreds.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, Simmental (n = 21) and Angus (n = 21) heifers, approximately 9 mo of age, were used in a 160-d study to determine the effect of dietary Cu on growth and Cu status. Two- or three-yr-old first-calf heifers (21 Angus and 21 Simmental) entering into their last trimester of pregnancy were used in Exp. 2 to estimate Cu requirements of the two breeds during gestation and early lactation. Treatments in both studies consisted of 0 (control), 7, or 14 mg of supplemental Cu (as CuSO4)/kg of DM. The control corn silage-based diets contained 6.4 and 4.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, and 1.2 mg of Mo/kg. Dietary Cu did not affect performance in either breed in Exp. 1. Copper supplementation generally did not affect plasma Cu concentrations in Angus heifers, but increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu in Simmental heifers from d 37 until the end of Exp. 1. Final liver Cu concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) than initial concentrations in control Angus and Simmental heifers; however, liver Cu increased (P < 0.01) in Cu-supplemented heifers. In Exp. 2, Cu supplementation of the control diet increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu during gestation and greatly increased (P < 0.01) liver Cu in both breeds. Calves born to cows not supplemented with Cu also had lower plasma Cu concentrations than Cu-supplemented calves by 73 d of age. In both studies, control Simmental heifers had lower (P < 0.05) plasma Cu concentrations than Angus on most sampling dates. When Cu was supplemented at 7 or 14 mg/kg of DM,few differences in plasma Cu concentrations were observed between breeds. Results suggest that Angus heifers have a lower minimal Cu requirement than Simmental. Based on liver Cu, the control diets containing 4.4 or 6.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM did not meet the Cu requirement of either breed during gestation and lactation or growth. Addition of 7 mg of Cu/kg of DM to the control diets met Cu requirements of both breeds.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years to determine the effects of prepartum nutrient level and postpartum ruminally undegraded protein intake on nutrient status, milk production, subsequent calf production, and reproductive performance of 126 crossbred, primiparous beef heifers. Prepartum treatments were low nutrient intake (LN) (approximately 2.5 kg of TDN, .5 kg of CP animal-1.d-1 and maintenance nutrient intake (MN) (5 kg of TDN, 1 kg of CP animal-1.d-1), which were fed for 75 d before parturition. Two postpartum protein supplements were formulated to provide 250 g/d of ruminally degradable protein (RD) and one to supply ruminally undegraded protein (UD) at 250 g/d of additional UD CP compared to the RD supplement. Cholesterol was lower (P less than .01) in heifers given UD than in heifers given RD. Blood urea nitrogen was higher (P less than .01) for UD-fed heifers than for RD-fed heifers and was higher in LN heifers (P less than .06) than in MN heifers. Milk production did not differ (P greater than .11) as a result of LN, MN, UD, or RD. Postpartum cow weight gain was greatest (P less than .01) for UD and LN heifers. The percentage of heifers bred during the first estrous cycle of the breeding season was greater (P less than .02) for UD than for RD. Overall, prepartum nutrition did not interact with postpartum protein supplement, nor did it have any effect on postpartum interval, whereas UD increased cow weight gain postpartum and reduced postpartum interval.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of feeding clenbuterol on adipose tissue and longissimus muscle growth in heifers. For 50 d, 14 heifers were fed either a sucrose-based, clenbuterol supplement or a placebo in which the clenbuterol had been omitted. The heifers were slaughtered in two groups, based on initial weight. Adipose tissue from several anatomical sites and longissimus muscle (depending on slaughter group) were obtained fresh at slaughter. Changes in carcass characteristics elicited by clenbuterol were similar to those reported by others for steers and sheep. Subcutaneous (sc) and intramuscular (im), but not perirenal, adipocytes were smaller and there were more cells per g tissue in the adipose tissue depots of the clenbuterol-fed heifers. Clenbuterol decreased lipogenic enzyme activities, fatty acid-binding protein activity, basal lipolysis and acetate incorporation into glyceride-fatty acids (P less than .05) in sc adipose tissue, but had no effect (P greater than .05) on lipogenesis or lipolysis in im adipose tissue. Clenbuterol elicited a 20% increase in type II myofiber diameters (P less than .05) but had no effect on type I myofiber diameters. In vitro growth hormone release by perifused anterior pituitaries was not affected significantly by long-term in vivo exposure to clenbuterol. These data indicate that a depression in lipogenesis is the mechanism by which clenbuterol decreases subcutaneous fat accretion in cattle.  相似文献

Thirty postpubertal Holstein heifers were used to investigate the influence of dietary intake on 1) serum concentrations of progesterone (P4) and luteinizing hormone (LH) during diestrus and 2) estrous behavior. Heifers were randomly allotted to receive either 80, 100 or 120% of the National Research Council (NRC) requirements for energy, protein and dry matter intake for 139 d. Heifers were fed their respective diets in groups in outdoor lots for 114 d at which time individual feeding of diets was initiated in a stanchion barn. Estrus was synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin (PG) so that on d 138 of dietary treatment the heifers were in diestrus (means = d 8 of estrous cycle). Also, on d 138, blood samples were collected via jugular cannula at 20-min intervals for 12 h beginning at 0630. After collection of the 37th blood sample, all heifers were treated with PG and additional blood samples were collected at 1-h intervals for 24 h. Immediately thereafter, all heifers were moved to a common outdoor lot for 72 h of continuous observation for estrous behavior. Weight gains during the experimental period differed among groups and were 46 +/- 5, 83 +/- 5 and 113 +/- 4 kg for the heifers fed 80, 100 and 120% of the NRC requirements, respectively. Mean serum concentrations of P4 for the 80% NRC group (4.6 +/- .6 ng/ml) tended to be lower than both the 100% (5.9 +/- .6 ng/ml) and 120% (6.0 +/- .5 ng/ml) NRC groups, respectively. Mean serum concentrations of LH, number of LH secretory peaks/12 h and LH peak amplitude were similar among all NRC groups. 仔猪早期断奶已成为集约化、规模化养殖生产中所采取的一项重要手段,虽然早期断奶技术可以提高母猪生产性能,也有利于提高仔猪的成活率,但是伴之而来的腹泻、生长迟缓、消化不良、免疫力低下等仔猪“早期断奶综合症”严重影响了养猪业的经济效益,这一问题迄今还没有彻底解决。仔猪断奶综合症发生的原因包括很多方面,比如动物心理、环境以及营养等改变所产生的应激作用,经过多年的研究表明,营养性因素特别是饲粮蛋白质(CP)水平是引起仔猪早期断奶综合症的主要因素。本文从饲粮CP组成及水平对断奶仔猪腹泻及机体免疫的影响以及早期断奶仔猪CP需要量方面作一阐述,为养猪生产者提供一定的理论依据。  相似文献

Energy and nitrogen balances were measured in two experiments involving 32 Large-White gilts kept in respiration chambers and given a constant diet providing 27.6 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per day (Experiment 1) or 32.7 MJ ME per day (Experiment 2). Measurements were made on the same animals at mid (Day 50–80) and late (Day 95 to farrowing) pregnancy in both experiments and also during early pregnancy (Days 30–50) in experiment 2. A total of 90 balances were performed.Advancement of pregnancy was associated with an increase in protein deposition and in heat production (67 kJ day−1 for a constant metabolizable energy (ME) intake) which resulted in reduced energy and fat deposition. Maintenance requirements (420–430 kJ ME kg−1 WC.75) were constant over pregnancy. Efficiencies of ME utilization for uterine (ku) and maternal (kr) deposition were 40–50% and about 80%, respectively. Efficiencies for protein (kp) and fat (kf) deposition were 58–67% and 80–90%, respectively. Additional heat loss with advancement of pregnancy (0.53 kJ kg−1 W0.75 day −1 of pregnancy) is related to the changes in the composition (protein vs. fat) and localization (uterine vs. maternal tissues) of the energy gain and not due to extra heat production arising from the pregnancy itself.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of supplementing primiparous heifers based on the metabolizable protein (MP) system during pregnancy and lactation. In Exp. 1, 12 pregnant, March-calving heifers (432 +/- 10 kg) grazing Sandhills range were randomly allotted to one of two treatments: supplementation based on either the MP system (MPR) or the CP system (CPR). Supplements were fed to individual heifers from October to February and no hay was offered. Grazed forage organic matter intake (FOMI) was measured in November, January, and February. In Exp. 2, 18 heifers (424 +/- 8 kg) were randomly allotted to one of three treatments: 1) supplementation based on the MP system with hay fed in January and February (average 2.0 kg/d; MPR/hay), 2) supplementation based on the CP system, with hay fed in January and February (CPR/hay), or 3) supplementation based on the MP system, with no hay fed (MPR/no hay). Supplements were fed from October to February, and FOMI was measured in December and February. In Exp. 3, lactating 2-yr-old cows (394 +/- 7 kg) maintained on meadow hay were supplemented to meet either 1) MP requirements (LMPR) or 2) degradable intake protein requirements (LDIPR). Body weight (BW) and body condition score change, hay intake, and milk production were measured. In Exp. 1, grazed FOMI decreased (P = 0.0001) from 1.9% of BW in November to 1.2% in February, but no differences among treatments were detected for FOMI or BW change. In Exp. 2, grazed FOMI declined (P = 0.0001) from 1.7% of BW in December to 1.1% in February, with no differences among treatments. Heifers on the MPR/hay and CPR/hay treatments had higher (P = 0.0018) total intake (grazed forage + hay intake) in February (1.7% BW) than the MPR/no hay heifers (1.1% BW). Heifers on the MPR/no hay treatment had a lower weight (P = 0.02) and tended (P = 0.11) to have a lower BCS than heifers on other treatments. In Exp. 3, the LMPR cows had higher (P = 0.02) ADG than LDIPR cows (0.41 and 0.14, respectively), but treatment did not affect milk production. Organic matter hay intake averaged 2.4% of BW. We conclude that supplementation to meet MP requirements had little benefit to heifer performance during gestation, but increased weight change during lactation. Because grazed forage intake decreased from 1.9 to 1.1% of BW with advancing gestation, supplemental energy is necessary to reduce weight and condition loss of gestating hefiers grazing dormant Sandhills range.  相似文献

The effects of nutrition during the last two trimesters of gestation on GnRH-induced LH release were assessed in crossbred heifers. Heifers (n = 58) were allotted at 90 d gestation to one of three levels of an experimental diet fed at 1, 1.5 or 2% of BW to attain maternal BW loss, BW maintenance or BW gain, respectively, at parturition. Twenty-two heifers were injected (i.m.) once with 100 micrograms GnRH between d 14 and 1 before parturition, and 32 heifers were injected (i.m.) once with 100 micrograms GnRH between d 8 and 21 after parturition. Jugular blood samples were collected before and at 30-min intervals after GnRH for 4 h. Least squares means for BW change differed (P less than .01) among BW loss (-17.6%), BW maintenance (-6.0%) and BW gain (7.0%) heifers. Basal plasma LH concentration was not influenced by nutritional treatment and was similar before and after parturition for all groups. However, in response to GnRH, peak plasma LH concentration was greater (P less than .10) for prepartum than for postpartum heifers. Mean LH peak amplitude in prepartum heifers was approximately twofold greater (P less than .10) in the BW loss and maintenance groups compared with the BW gain group. Prepartum LH release was related inversely (r = -.64) to change in heifer BW and increased (P less than .01) as BW loss increased during gestation. After parturition, mean LH peak amplitude and area under the response curve averaged 50% less (P less than .10) in the BW loss and maintenance groups than in the BW gain group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Meat production by goats has become an important livestock enterprise in several parts of the world. Nonetheless, energy and protein requirements of meat goats have not been defined thoroughly. The objective of this study was to determine the energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth of 34 (3/4) Boer x (1/4) Saanen crossbred, intact male kids (20.5 +/- 0.24 kg of initial BW). The baseline group was 7 randomly selected kids, averaging 21.2 +/- 0.36 kg of BW. An intermediate group consisted of 6 randomly selected kids, fed for ad libitum intake, that were slaughtered when they reached an average BW of 28.2 +/- 0.39 kg. The remaining kids (n = 21) were allocated randomly on d 0 to 3 levels of DMI (treatments were ad libitum or restricted to 70 or 40% of the ad libitum intake) within 7 slaughter groups. A slaughter group contained 1 kid from each treatment, and kids were slaughtered when the ad libitum treatment kid reached 35 kg of BW. Individual body components (head plus feet, hide, internal organs plus blood, and carcass) were weighed, ground, mixed, and subsampled for chemical analyses. Initial body composition was determined using equations developed from the composition of the baseline kids. The calculated daily maintenance requirement for NE was 77.3 +/- 1.05 kcal/kg(0.75) of empty BW (EBW) or 67.4 +/- 1.04 kcal/kg(0.75) of shrunk BW. The daily ME requirement for maintenance (118.1 kcal/kg(0.75) of EBW or 103.0 kcal/kg(0.75) of shrunk BW) was calculated by iteration, assuming that the heat produced was equal to the ME intake at maintenance. The partial efficiency of use of ME for NE below maintenance was 0.65. A value of 2.44 +/- 0.4 g of net protein/kg(0.75) of EBW for daily maintenance was determined. Net energy requirements for growth ranged from 2.55 to 3.0 Mcal/kg of EBW gain at 20 and 35 kg of BW, and net protein requirements for growth ranged from 178.8 to 185.2 g/kg of EBW gain. These results suggest that NE and net protein requirements for growing meat goats exceed the requirements previously published for dairy goats. Moreover, results from this study suggest that the N requirement for maintenance for growing goats is greater than the established recommendations.  相似文献

There is little information regarding the nutritional requirements for dairy heifers, leading the majority of nutrient requirement systems to consider dairy heifers to be similar to beef heifers. Therefore, we evaluated the muscle protein metabolism and physical and chemical body composition of growing Holstein × Gyr heifers and estimated the energy and protein requirements. We performed a comparative slaughter experiment with 20 Holstein × Gyr heifers at an initial body weight of 218 ± 36.5 kg and an average age of 12 ± 1.0 months. Four heifers were designated as the reference group, and the 16 remaining heifers were fed ad libitum . The 16 heifers were distributed using a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two roughages (corn silage or sugarcane) and two concentrate levels (30 or 50%) for 112 days. Greater (p  <  0.05) values for fractional rates of muscle protein synthesis, degradation and accretion were observed for heifers that were fed 50% concentrate. The following equations were obtained to estimate the net energy for gain (NE g) and net protein for gain (NP g): NE g (Mcal/day) = 0.0685 × EBW 0.75 × EBWG 1.095 and NP g (g/day) = 203.8 × EBWG  ? 14.80 × RE , respectively, in which EBW is the empty body weight, EBWG is the empty body weight gain and RE is the retained energy. We concluded that increased rates of protein turnover are achieved when a greater quality diet is provided. In the future, these results can be used to calculate the nutritional requirements for growth of Holstein × Gyr heifers after equation validation rather than using the recommendations provided by other systems, which use values developed from beef heifers, to determine the nutritional requirements of dairy cattle.  相似文献

Maintenance energy requirements (MERs) were calculated for 17 German shepherd and 20 Labrador retriever adult dogs using an in‐home prospective dietary trial. The dogs were fed the same dry pet food and body weight, food intake, body condition score and physical activity were monitored for 10 weeks. Labrador retrievers were significantly heavier and had higher body condition scores than German shepherd dogs, but there was no difference between males and females within each group. Body weights remained stable over the study period, with an average daily gain of 9.1 g. Mean (SD) MER was 103.4 (16.3) kcal/kg BW0.75, which was some 20% lower than that currently suggested for moderately active young adult dogs. Individual MER ranged from 66.8 to 141 kcal/kg BW0.75. There were no significant differences in MER between the two breeds, or between males and females within and between the two breeds. There was a significant inverse relationship between MER and body condition score, reflecting the lower energy expenditure of adipose tissue. The lower MER of dogs in this study, relative to previous observations, may reflect climatic and environmental differences and highlight the necessity for accurate estimates of MER in relation to the production and feeding of pet foods.  相似文献

Metabolizable protein (MP) requirements of spring calving heifers increase over the winter due to advancing gestation. The MP content of grazed winter forage is low, which may result in an MP deficiency. The objective was to compare the response of supplementing pregnant yearling heifers to meet MP requirements versus conventional CP supplementation. In 1997-98 and in 1998-99, pregnant, March-calving heifers (2,120 animals; 358 kg) at two locations of a commercial ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills, were used following breeding through calving as 2-yr-olds (cows). Heifers were randomly allotted to one of two supplementation treatments (about 265 heifers/treatment) each year at each of two locations (Ashby and Whitman, NE). Treatments were 1) supplementation to meet MP requirements (MPR) or 2) supplementation to meet CP requirements (CPR). Heifers grazed upland range and meadow and were offered supplements three times weekly from mid-September to mid- or late-February. Increasing amounts of meadow hay were fed from mid-December through calving. After supplementation ended in February, heifers were managed in one group at each location until the following October. Body weights and body condition scores were taken in September, February, and October. Two-yr-old pregnancy rates were determined via rectal palpation in October. Capital budgeting techniques were used to determine the economic return of supplementation strategies. There were no differences in BW (P = 0.41) or body condition score (P = 0.99) change during the winter among treatment groups across years and locations, but MPR cows were heavier (425 kg) than CPR cows (421 kg) at the time of 2-yr-old pregnancy testing (P = 0.07). Pregnancy rate was higher (P = 0.001) in the MPR (91%) compared to the CPR treatment (86%). Regression analysis showed that the response of the MPR treatment on pregancy rates tended to be negatively correlated with precalving body condition score (P = 0.11), body condition score loss over the winter (P = 0.07), and body condition score at weaning of the first calf (P = 0.08). The improvement in 2-yr-old pregnancy by supplementing to meet MP requirements improved the value of each bred heifer by 13.64 dollars. We conclude that balancing MP requirements during gestation may result in a subsequent increase in 2-yr-old pregnancy and increase the value of young females.  相似文献
