Summary Cebada Capa, carrying four to six minor genes for a longer latent period (LP), was crossed to L94 and Vada, carrying no and five to six minor genes for a longer LP respectively. Of each of 68 F3-lines the infection frequency (IF) and the LP of ten just-heading plants were assessed. There appeared to be a strong association between IF and LP, whereby the relationship between IF and LP of both crosses could be described by a single linear regression equation. The data strongly suggest that the genes for increased LP pleiotropically decrease the IF. The possibility of a close linkage between genes for reduced IF and genes for increased LP, although unlikely, could not be excluded.

The colchicine-grafting method of doubling the chromosome number of potato cuttings was used successfully for producing hexaploids from the triploid species, Solanum x juzepczukii. All the plants with hexaploid flowers were triploid/hexaploid sectorial chimeras. Seeds were obtained from crosses of the hexaploid parts with both an andigena-tuberosum hybrid and a tuberosum variety.

Summary The occurrence of three male-sterile plants is reported. One in a population of ex-Bormu, an improved recommended variety of day-length neutral gero bulrush millet and the two others in the selfed progeny of a population of maiwa bulrush millet, a short-day photoperiod-sensitive type. Tests confirmed the cytoplasmic-genic nature of the male-sterility in the gero population. No tests could be conducted for maiwa. The transfer of male-sterility from the male-sterile Tift 23A bulrush millet, obtained from the United States, into a maiwa population is also reported. After six backcrosses the maiwa genotype appeared to have been reconstituted against the background of a male-sterility inducing cytoplasm. Maiwa male-sterility maintainer plants have also been identified.

Summary The determinate Phaseolus vulgaris L. cvs Dark Red Kidney Charlevoix, and near-isogenic Great Northern Nebraska 1 were grown in blends with the indeterminate GN Nebraska 1 in white mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) disease field nurseries. A critical difference between Charlevoix and indeterminate GN Nebraska 1 is that the latter has a greater leaf area closer to the soil surface, and this is associated with increased numbers of apothecia beneath the canopy and higher disease severity. White mold infection and apothecia number/m2 beneath the canopy of the blends containing Charlevoix were significantly reduced in comparison with the severely infected, homogeneous, indeterminate GN Nebraska 1. A reduction of white mold infection for the indeterminate GN Nebraska 1 was not observed in blends grown under severe or moderate white mold incidence, but did occur under slight incidence in blends containing 65% and 75% Charlevoix. No significant difference for seed yield occurred between the blends and homogeneous cultivars planted in four experiments under severe, moderate, slight and zero white mold incidence, respectively, except in Experiment 1 under moderate white mold incidence, the blend of 50% indeterminate GN Nebraska 1 and 50% Charlevoix exceeded the yield of the indeterminate GN Nebraska 1. Mean weight of white (GN Nebraska 1) and red seed (Charlevoix) increased and decreased, respectively, in some blends due to the more vigorous growth of the indeterminate GN Nebraska 1.Published as Paper No. 5341, Journal Series, Nebraska Agric. Summary The 21 intervarietal chromosome substitution lines of the cultivar Hope in Chinese Spring were used to analyse the genetic differences between the two cultivars Hope and Chinese Spring in grain protein content and grain weight.Only one chromosome of Hope, 5D, significantly influenced grain protein content of Chinese Spring. Its influence was of only minor effect and was to decrease protein content expression of Chinese Spring. It has been postulated that the genetic control of protein content, in this instance, is most likely due to many genes each of small effect.Five chromosomes of Hope influenced the 1000 grain weight value of normal Chinese Spring, all increasing its expression. Chromosomes 1A, 4A and 5B were of major effect and 3A and 6A of comparatively minor effect. A minimal estimate of five genes determines the difference in grain size between these cultivars. The possible evolutionary significance of the contribution of the A genome of bread wheat to grain size determination is discussed. On the basis of certain findings of this study, proposals are made for breeding for increased grain size in hexaploid wheat.

Embryonic axes of Persian lilac (Melia azedarach L.)encapsulated into calcium alginate beads with sucrose (0.75 M) and salicylicacid (0, 50 M, 200 M) were subjected to cryopreservationtechnique with dehydration and freezing in liquid nitrogen or to coldpreservation by stocking alginate beads in empty petri dishes for 4 monthsat 4 °C. In these two cases 200 M salicylic acid enhancedsignificantly the percentage of viability of encapsulated embryonic axes andthe role of salicylic acid in increasing tolerance to dehydration is discussed.

Summary In the preceding pages an outline has been given of the methods used in breeding of Vorstenlanden tobacco. The new tobacco strains introduced on a large scale have been obtained by:1. Individual selection in old populations.2. Individual selection in F2 and following generations, after crossing several true-breeding Vorstenlanden types.3. Individual selection in F2 and following generations, after crossing of a Timor strain with Vorstenlanden tobacco and repeated backcrossing with Vorstenlanden strains. Through this practice,Phytophthora resistance could be combined with good Vorstenlanden quality.4. Artificially induced mutations by means of X raying young flower buds. This gave a tobacco strain with an exceptionally bright leaf color. This latest new strain could only be introduced through growing of F1 hybrid mutant × typica, by doing so the bright color of the leaves could be combined with the normal number of leaves per plant.By growing various F1 hybrids on a large scale, viz. of thePhytophthora resistant tobacco strain crossed with several other tobacco strains, selected for quality characteristics, combinations have been obtained, in whichPhytophthora resistance has been saved, while the advantage of growing different types of tobacco has not been lost.Because of a decrease in the variation of quality types, through the loss of seed of many selected strains at the reopening of the tobacco plantings, it is highly recommendable to pay full attention in the future to the possibilities, created by the large scale use of F1 hybrids.

Ten snap beans (Barrier, Brio, Carson, Cornell 502, CT 70, HB 1880, Hystyle, Labrador, Opus and Venture) were selected for differential temperature tolerance and used as parents in a complete diallel mating design. The 45 F1 hybrid lines (with reciprocals) and parents were screened at 32 C day/28 C night, and in a separate experiment, 16 C day/10 C night, during reproductive development in replicated controlled environments. Variation for yield under temperature treatments was observed among parents and hybrids, with certain hybrids exceeding parental performance. Significant (P 0.0001) general combining ability (GCA), and significant (P 0.05) specific combining ability (SCA) were observed for yield components including pod number, seed number, and seeds per pod. There was evidence that pod number and seeds per pod under temperature stress are under separate genetic control. Reciprocal effects and heterosis were not significant. GCA could not be predicted from parental performance. The breeding line Cornell 502 had the highest GCA under high temperature, and the cultivar Brio had the highest GCA under low temperature. The cross Brio × Venture was high yielding in both temperature treatments. Heat tolerance and chilling tolerance were associated in certain parents and hybrids. However, performance under high and low temperature treatments was not generally correlated in the parents and hybrids, indicating that these traits should be selected separately.

In breeding tomatoes for resistance to Corky root Lycopersicum glandulosum is used as a resistant parent. Crosses of tomato with L. glandulosum are difficult to effect because of the incompatibility of the partners. To overcome this incompatibility the approach method was applied beside the conventional crosses.Repeated reciprocal grafting of tomato onto L. glandulosum and also L. glandulosum on tomato did not increase the number of effected matings. The statement that by repeated grafting the characters of the scion change under the influence of the stock could not be confirmed.

The electrophoretic banding patterns ofgliadin in common wheat lines derived fromJapan were determined byacid-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. For the 107 wheat lines used in our study,27 different patterns were identified, 13corresponding to the -gliadin, 8 tothe , -gliadin and 6 to the-gliadin. The gliadin patterns ofJapanese wheat cultivars and landracesgreatly differed from the patterns of wheatlines from other countries, and thevariation seen in wheat lines from Japanwas limited to 46 patterns. Sevencollection or breeding areas in Japanshowed different frequencies in theirgliadin patterns. Combining the gliadinpatterns with high molecular weightglutenin subunit compositions, 67combinations were observed. One gliadinpattern consisting of -gliadinpattern F, , -gliadinpattern H and -gliadin pattern Dwas frequently found in many Japanese wheatlines, though the other patterns werelimited to only one or two wheat lines.

Summary Four inbred cabbage lines have been derived from a single parental plant through several generations of selfing. Two inbreds have been found homozygous for an S 1 allele while the other two are each homozygous for S 2. Each inbred is self-incompatible, cross-incompatible with the inbred carrying the same S allele, and fully cross-compatible with inbreds carrying the other S allele. The S 1 and S 2 pairs of inbreds were each found to consist of one inbred with very high self-incompatibility (mean seed set of 0.15–0.25 seeds per pod) and one inbred with less intense self-incompatibility (mean seed set of 1.25–1.70 seeds per pod). For the S 1 pair, flower to flower and plant to plant variation in seed set per pod was much larger for the less incompatible inbred that for the highly incompatible inbred. Further, incompatibility expression of the less incompatible inbred was influenced by temperature variation while that of the highly incompatible inbred was stable under different temperature regimes. The F1 between the two inbreds of high and low incompatibility with the common S 1 allele behaved like the less incompatible parent. F2 plants showed intermediate intensities of selfincompatibility as well as variation for both lesser and greater intensities than those exhibited by the parents. The variations of self-compatibility and the sensitivity to environmental differences are considered to be conditioned by genes which modify incompatibility expression of the S alleles.

Summary Lilium Black Beauty, a rare intersectional hybrid previously reported sterile, was re-examined for pollen and ovule fertility. No pollen tubes were detected following incubation of styles pollinated with Black Beauty pollen. However, embryos varying in size from small globular to long boat-shaped and only rarely associated with endosperm, were found in 0.1–1.0% of the ovules in Black Beauty pistils pollinated with Oriental or Aurelian division lilies. Aseptic extraction and culture of these embryos on a nutritive medium resulted in growth, germination, and plantlets. It is apparent that with embryo culture, Black Beauty has unique value as a species bridge in that it accepts pollen of both Oriental and Aurelian lilies, two of the major commercial lily divisions.Scientific Journal Series Paper Number 9197 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experimental Station.

In Corchorus sidoides F. Muell x C. siliquosus L. , the pod set was 19.05 per cent. and the percentage of pod harvested (out of set pods) was 100 per cent.. All seeds of the cross pods were non-viable.In C. siliquosus L. x C. sidoides F. Muell. , the pod set was 8.7 per cent. and the percentage of pod harvested was 100. In this case the seeds were also non-viable.The genus Corchorus comprises species which are systematically widely related. The possibility of getting viable hybrids in this case is impossible because the phylogenetic relationship does not allow of getting viable seeds. A karyotypic study of these species will throw light on this aspect and breeders will then get a tool for handling this subject.Department of Agriculture, Calcutta University

In this article two models are discussed to explain those necrosis symptoms in wheat which cannot or insufficiently be interpreted with the aid of three genotype classes mentioned in the literature. Each of the models is supported by a necrosis spectrum, through which the genotype of progressive necrosis of an unknown wheat variety can be determined. One model is based on 4 genes of progressive necrosis and on the hypothesis that of these genes both the combinations AB and BCD produce this type of necrosis. The other model is based on the hypothesis that all symptoms of progressive necrosis in wheat are due to three complementary genes, also in the crosses in which a 9:7 segregation in the F2 (or 1:1 in the B1) was found. In the latter case both parents have one dominant factor of progressive necrosis in common. The possibility is considered that each of the necrosis genes is localized in a different genome of Triticum aestivum. The necrosis types mentioned in the literature are reduced to two main types, viz. progressive necrosis, whereby the necrosis starts at the leaf tips of the oldest leaf and gradually reaches the later tissue; and firing, whereby the uppermost leaves are the first to wither as a whole and later the oldest leaves. In the discussion the possible genetical relation between the two main types are mentioned and finally the second model is assumed as the most likely and at any rate the more workable scheme.

Summary Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity has been determined in apple landraces and cultivars, based upon restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for several mitochondrial genes. Our analysis includes three cultivars, Golden Delicious, McIntosh and Delicious, which represent the various patterns of mtDNA polymorphisms previously described (Ishikawa et al., 1992). A total of five RFLPs were detected, allowing classification of the apple genotypes into four cytoplasmic groups: GroupI, Golden Delicious-type; GroupII, McIntosh-type; GroupIII, Delicious-type; and Group IV, Dolgo Crab-type. European landraces and cultivars were assigned to Groups I, II, and III, while chinese crab apples were placed in either Group III or IV.

By using two tomato genotypes, 227/1 (Fe chlorosis susceptible) and Roza (Fe chlorosis tolerant), and their reciprocal F1, F2 and BC1 generations, the inheritance of tolerance to leaf Fe deficiency chlorosis of Roza was studied. Plants were grown in a nutrient solution and subjected to 2.0 × 10–6 M Fe EDDHA and 10 mM NaHCO3 to induce Fe deficiency stress by stabilization of pH to 7.8–8.2. A rating scale of 1–3 for chlorophyll was used and both monogenic and polygenic inheritance hypotheses were tested. Better responses to Fe deficiency, as measured by SPAD meter values, were obtained from the cross Roza × 227/1 than from the reciprocal cross. Data from F2 and BC1 suggest Fe chlorosis tolerance of Roza is to be controlled by polygenic loci with a relatively high additive effect.

Summary Purple leaf base is expressed only if there is anthocyanin pigmentation in coleoptiles either in rye or in rye-wheat-additions. Genes controlling purple leaf base were found to be located on chromosomes 5R (An5), 4B (Ra2) and 6B (Ra3) using the trisomic set of rye cv. Esto and autoplasmic rye-wheat-additions, respectively.

A genetical study was made of three diploid varieties of Fragaria vesca, namely, wild type and two cultivated Alpine varieties, Baron Solemacher and Bush White. The varieties differ in several characters, including flowering habit, runnering habit, branching habit and fruit colour. Wild type is seasonal flowering, produces runners, has a simple branching habit and has red fruit. Both the Alpine varieties have a perpetual flowering (everbearing) habit and produce no runners. Buron Solemacher resembles wild type in branching habit and fruit colour, whereas Bush White has a very bushy habit (i.e., has a large number of crowns per plant) and has white fruit.Wild type F. vesca was crossed with the two Alpine varieties, and the F1 progenies were selfed and back-crossed to the Alpine parents. The results indicate that the differences in flowering habit are controlled by a single major gene, seasonal flowering being dominant to perpetual flowering, the recessive alleles in the two perpetual flowering varieties apparently being identical. Differences in runnering habit also appear to involve a single gene locus but non-runnering is associated with the bushy habit in Bush White and therefore either the three alleles of the same gene occur or the gene controlling bushiness in separate but closely linked with the gene controlling runnering. Fruit colour is controlled by one major gene locus, red being dominant to white fruit. All three major genes segregate independently. In all cases the characters of the wild type are dominant. The possible nature of the physiological process controlled by the gene for flowering habit is discussed.

Summary A 7-variety diallel of synthetic varieties that have not had selection for yield improvement and a 10-variety diallel of synthetic varieties that either resulted from recurrent selection for yield improvement or from the introgression of exotic germ plasm into adapted varieties were evaluated in six environments for yield and five other agronomic traits. The specific objective was to determine the relative potential of the synthetic varieties as germ plasm sources for breeding programs.Recurrent selection improved population yield in BSSS CO, BSK CO, and Alph CO in the varieties and also in crosses with other varieties. BSSS(R)C6 and BSSS(HT)C7 yielded 11.4% and 16.1% more than BSSS CO, and the variety crosses of BSSS(R)C6 and BSSS(HT)C7 yielded 21.6% and 22.0% more than the variety crosses of BSSS CO. Recurrent selection also improved stalk-lodging resistance for BSSS(R)C6 and BSSS(HT)C7, but root lodging for BSSS(HT)C7 was significantly higher. BS15 had 61.0% higher yields than Alph CO, with 9.3% less stalk lodging. Average heterosis of the 10-variety diallel was 1120 kg/ha (19.6%) and ranged from 800 kg/ha (13.7%) for BSK(S)C5 to 1770 kg/ha (39.4%) for BS12(HI)C5. The heterosis expressed among individual variety crosses ranged from 4.3% for BSK(S)C5 x BSTE(FR)C1 to 37.6% for BSSS(R)C6 x BS12(HI)C5, which approached the yield of the two highest yielding single-cross checks. In the 7-variety diallel of unselected varieties, BSTE CO and Late Rootworm Synthetic were superior as varieties and in crosses for yield and stalk quality. Average heterosis for the 7-variety diallel was 950 kg/ha (18.5%). Stalk lodging was important in the performance of varieties with poor stalk quality.Although recurrent selection improved yield, development of superior breeding populations also will require selection for general agronomic performance. The performance of BS16 and the yields of BSTL and Teozea and their crosses suggest that exotic germ plasm should receive greater attention.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Journal Paper No. J-8096 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa 50010.
