Developing an Open Access Croplands Research Database Through Global Collaboration

This article describes the processes, challenges, and outcomes of a project undertaken by Kansas State University (K-State) Libraries and a global community of researchers. The project, initiated by librarians in the newly created Faculty and Graduate Services Department, involved collaboration with a K-State agronomist. The initial concept was to create an open access database of croplands research submitted by researchers from the Global Research Alliance Croplands Research Group, a consortium of over 30 countries. Due to the project's complexity, it was determined that a more manageable approach would be to pilot the project by including research from only the United States and Australia to resolve problems before scaling up to include all 34 countries in the GRA Croplands Research Group.     

Disseminating Equine Research and Teaching Videos Through the Institutional Repository: A Collaboration

Institutional repositories manage and disseminate a University's scholarly output and provide a multitude of benefits to the organization and society. Rutgers University Libraries is actively expanding its repository to include materials with scholarly merit that are currently siloed in academic departments or otherwise unpreserved and unavailable to the public. This article describes a collaboration between Rutgers Libraries faculty and Rutgers teaching faculty which is enabling discovery of a significant collection of video data relating to equine behavioral responses. The article describes the research, the repository tools, and the process of developing and customizing metadata to bring this collection to light.

ABSTRACT

The development of a site that allows the public easy access into the information available at Michigan State University was the key to starting an across the University collaboration. By working collectively with MSU Libraries, MSU Extension, and MSU Outreach, the development of the site offered opportunities to link internal and external resources around issues. The site offers information on basic topic areas and sub topics that people expect the land-grant university can answer. The development was and is based on input from not just the team but from departments, staff and the public.     

Serials Redesign: Using Electronic Document Delivery to Reshape Access to Agricultural Journal Literature

ABSTRACT

In response to financial pressures resulting from escalating serials prices and severe budget constraints, LSU Libraries have launched a complete and comprehensive evaluation and redesign of its serials collection. The Serials Redesign Project is an innovative approach to the serials review process using electronic document delivery to facilitate the integration of access and ownership. Library liaisons help promote faculty acceptance and support, which will be crucial to the success of the project. Background information, the project methodology, faculty responses, and preliminary results for two pilot studies and for the Agriculture departments are presented.     

Building on a Land-Grant Tradition: Engagement at the Mississippi State University Libraries

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the need for land-grant libraries to develop services and projects in support of the mission of their universities. Projects developed at the Mississippi State University Libraries are discussed from the perspective of “engaged” library services. These services include outreach activities to academic departments, core instructional initiatives, support services to extension personnel (ELL), collaborative collection development projects (DigiTop Plus) and projects designed to preserve the state's agricultural history (CHARM).     

Linking Information to Real-Life Problems: An Interdisciplinary Collaboration of Librarians,Departments, and Food Businesses

Through a United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (USDA CSREES) Higher Education Challenge Grant, a team of teaching faculty and librarians at Rutgers University developed an interdisciplinary course, “Food and Nutrition Business Information and Communication.” The course employed an active learning approach that involved a unique collaboration between various academic disciplines; the Rutgers University Libraries; the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies (SCILS); and the Rutgers Food Manufacturing Technology Facility (FMT). In the course, teams of students from the departments involved worked collaboratively to help solve an actual research problem from industry partners working at FMT. Three examples of student problem solving are presented and assessed using the rubric developed for the course. The course actively involves librarians and demonstrates the importance of information literacy skills in today's information economy.     

From Their Mouths to Our Ears: Research Practices and Needs of Agricultural Scientists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

ABSTRACT

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Libraries was one of 19 participants in a national study of the research practices and needs of agricultural researchers. Two UNL Libraries faculty members interviewed 11 UNL scholars during the summer of 2016. The ethnographic research approach revealed four core themes: interdisciplinarity and collaborations, scientific communication practices, scientific research data issues and practices, and challenges and opportunities. Illustrated by the sample of faculty comments presented here, the themes have direct implications for the UNL Libraries, while in other cases these point to concerns and opportunities for the university, the academy, and the nation.

Impacting Librarianship and Veterinary Medicine: History of the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section of the Medical Library Association from 1974 to 2014

This article discusses the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section (VMLS) of the Medical Library Association (MLA), its impacts on both librarianship and veterinary medicine during its 40-year history, how it achieved those impacts, relationships, selected projects, and organizational changes through the years. A listing of publications about veterinary librarianship and VMLS products is available on the VMLS website (Veterinary Medical Libraries Section, 2014).

Emerging Data Curation Roles for Librarians: A Case Study of Agricultural Data

This article discusses ways in which agricultural librarians can transform what they do to meet the emerging needs of scientists for creating data management strategies. Discussion of the Purdue University Libraries’ experience with evolving roles in working with scientists will include required knowledge, training, experimentation, and development of working relationships with scientists involved in the data curation, as well as pitfalls and barriers.     

Overcoming the Fear Factor: Creating a Dynamic Web Site

In this information-rich age, agriculture-related information is abundant and updated quickly. Collaborations between agriculture specialists and information specialists are increasing. The question has become how can agricultural information be presented in a more collaborative and timely manner?

This article documents the process that Kansas State Libraries (KSL) followed to build a dynamic Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) website. It discusses how and why librarians collaborated with research and teaching faculty and other agriculture specialists, examines the pros and cons of building dynamic versus static websites, and documents the steps to create a basic dynamic website without extensive programming skills.

Choosing an Electronic Mail System

The Food, Agriculture, and Nutrition (FAN) Division of Special Libraries Association established the E-mail Committee in 1991 to evaluate and recommend an e-mail system for members to use as a communication tool. After an initial literature review and survey of members, three e-mail systems were selected for further evaluation. The committee evaluated: the Internet, DialMail from Dialog Information Services, and ALF: Agricultural Library Forum, a bulletin board system (BBS) from the National Agricultural Library. ALF was chosen; it met the criteria identified through the survey and allowed greatest access by FAN members.

Investigating the Needs of Agriculture Scholars: The Purdue Case

ABSTRACT

To better understand the complexity of agricultural research, two Purdue University Libraries’ faculty members conducted a series of interviews with subjects from across the College of Agriculture. Interview questions addressed research methodologies and outputs, research data management, primary information resources, and other aspects of the research cycle and the researchers’ professional lives. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using nVivo software. The results are summarized and presented here.

Examining the Research Practices of Agricultural Scholars at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities

ABSTRACT

During the spring and summer of 2016, the University of Minnesota Libraries joined 18 other institutions to participate in Ithaka S+R's Research Support Services Program to explore agricultural scholars' research focus, research methods, and publishing practices. This report summarizes our local findings, resulting from 16 interviews with University of Minnesota faculty from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences on the Twin Cities campus. It also offers suggestions for agriculture libraries and librarians based on the data we have gathered.
