Extension service: Past,present, and future

This workshop provided an overview of how the role of the extension service has evolved and provided audience members with the knowledge and resources to address current and future needs of the nation’s poultry industry. Future expectations of extension to support the nation’s poultry industry were presented by different individuals with varying relationships with extension. Perspectives from a student, industry personnel, faculty member, and administration were presented. The role of extension in meeting past, present, and future challenges facing different sectors of the industry was also addressed. These areas included youth and underserved audiences, production, processing, and health and food security.     

The analysis—Hierarchical models: Past,present and future

This paper discusses statistical modelling for data with a hierarchical structure, and distinguishes in this context between three different meanings of the term hierarchical model: to account for clustering, to investigate variability and separate predictive equations at different hierarchical levels (multi-level analysis), and in a Bayesian framework to involve multiple layers of data or prior information. Within each of these areas, the paper reviews both past developments and the present state, and offers indications of future directions. In a worked example, previously reported data on piglet lameness are reanalyzed with multi-level methodology for survival analysis, leading to new insights into the data structure and predictor effects. In our view, hierarchical models of all three types discussed have much to offer for data analysis in veterinary epidemiology and other disciplines.     

Nutrition for aging cats and dogs and the importance of body condition.

Before recommending a diet for a senior pet, a thorough nutritional evaluation should be completed. Although many middle-aged and older pets are overweight, a large percentage of geriatric cats and dogs have a low BCS. Approximately one third of cats older than 12 years of age may have a decreased ability to digest fat, whereas one in five may have a compromised ability to digest protein. Thus, appropriate diets for these two age groups may differ considerably. Mature (middle-aged) cats would likely benefit from a lower calorie food, whereas geriatric cats (>12 years of age) may need a highly digestible nutrient-dense diet. More than 40% of dogs between the ages of 5 and 10 years are overweight or obese. Such dogs may benefit from diets with lower fat and calories. Senior dogs also have an increased need for dietary protein, however. Therefore, healthy older dogs may benefit from diets with an increased protein-to-calorie ratio, providing a minimum of 25% of calories from protein. Common obesity-related conditions in dogs or cats include DM and OA. Diabetes differs between dogs and cats. Type I diabetes, common in dogs, seems to respond to fiber-enriched diets, whereas type II diabetes, common in cats, seems to benefit from high-protein and low-carbohydrate diets. OA, an inflammatory condition that occurs in approximately 20% of dogs, may benefit from weight management and nutrients that reduce the inflammatory responses, such as long-chain n-3 fatty acids.     

The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD). Past, present and future.

During the last one-and-one-half decades, FARAD has established an unparalleled compilation of residue and pharmacokinetic information for veterinary species. In order to fulfill its mission, FARAD has become as much a research project as an educational one. Pressing problems, such as disease-altered kinetics, minor-species drug use, and industrial contaminants in livestock, require the new methods of analysis FARAD is developing. The data upon which this work is based can be greatly augmented by participation by other nations. In the United States, it was the cooperation of both academic and regulatory organizations that made the success of FARAD possible. Similar international cooperation can facilitate use of the FARAD model in other countries for the economic benefit of all participants, enhancement of food safety, and promotion of animal welfare.     

Care and use of feeding tubes in dogs and cats

Feeding tubes are an accepted way of providing nutritional support for animals unable or unwilling to consume adequate calories on their own. This article provides information on the indications for the use of feeding tubes in small animals, the types of tubes available, and ways to initiate nutritional support once the tubes are in place. The pros and cons of the various tubes are discussed, as well as potential complications.     

Nutrition and health of dogs and cats: evolution of petfood

Maintaining the health of dogs and cats by feeding wholesome nutritional diets is becoming an important component of responsible pet ownership. Pet owners now seek a long and healthy life for their pet and look to nutrition, as well as to veterinary medicine, to provide such support. Quality of life, measured in terms of reduced incidence of diseases and the ability to maintain an active life, would appear to be able to be enhanced by appropriate nutrition and nutraceutical supplementation. As a consequence numerous improvements in companion animal nutrition have resulted in development of a wide array of foods that provide complete and balanced nutrition. As a result emphasis also has to be placed on product safety and quality parameters, in connection with traceability. The origin of products, including product characteristics and properties, processing conditions and further handling throughout the period chain, is becoming ever increasingly an issue for collective chain management.

Laparoscopy in dogs and cats.

Laparoscopic techniques have been developed in veterinary medicine for noninvasive evaluation of several organs, including liver, extrahepatic biliary system, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, bowel, and genitourinary tract. Biopsy procedures of these organs with minimal risk can be performed in most patients. This article reviews the equipment and technique necessary to perform laparoscopy in dogs and cats.     

Hemangiosarcoma in dogs and cats.

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA, including angiosarcoma and malignant hemangioendothelioma) is a highly malignant tumor derived from the endothelial cell line and is characterized by early and aggressive metastasis. HAS is a common tumor type in dogs, but is rare in other species. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and possibly radiation, but survival times are invariably short (usually < 1 year), except for patients with superficial dermal HSAs. Further options to treat this tumor type are currently being investigated.     

Bullet, bite, and burn wounds in dogs and cats.

Veterinarians are frequently presented with bullet, bite, or burn trauma patients. Injuries can vary from simple minor penetrating skin wounds to major life-threatening soft and hard tissue damage with concurrent complex metabolic ramifications. This article reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic options for each type of injury.     

Phylogenetic identification of Cystoisospora spp. from dogs, cats, and raccoon dogs in Japan

Cystoisospora spp. from feces in dogs, cats, and raccoon dogs were isolated, sequenced at the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene locus and compared to other Cystoisospora spp. Cystoisospora oocysts from dogs and raccoon dogs were morphologically similar with those of C. ohioensis, and cat isolates were similar with those of C. felis. The sequences from dogs and raccoon dogs, and cats have a homology with C. ohioensis and C. felis, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of the DNA sequences showed that the dog and raccoon dog isolates were nested in a clade with other Cystoisospora spp. including C. ohioensis, C. belli, and C. orlovi. The cat isolate formed a sister group with C. felis that was a separate clade from the dog and raccoon dog group. We report sequence variation in these Cystoisospora sequences and have identified raccoon dogs as another carnivore host for Cystoisospora spp. infecting dogs.
