Graduate education in animal science prepares students to enhance the understanding of biology and to utilize this knowledge to increase animal productivity. The mentor is instrumental in the development of scientists and must be dedicated to success of students. The approach used to guide an inquisitive student into a productive researcher and educator is formulated from the experiences of the mentor. The training program that the mentor was exposed to, as well as experiences to identify activities that are successful, can result in a unique program to nurture and stimulate students. A dedication to a productive research program is essential for mentoring. Participation in research early in a graduate program is important and it helps students realize that their research can be innovative and exciting. Frequent meetings between students and mentors are essential and participation in data collection and analyses by the student and mentor are great teaching events. Students must have knowledge of the basic sciences and the discipline as well as their focused research area. The availability of antidotes in veterinary medicine has been an issue for more than a decade. Antidotes are available for food animals through extralabel use, regulatory discretion, and compounding. There is little economic incentive for pharmaceutical companies to pursue approval of antidotes and other drug products that have a small market. In addition, human food safety concerns must be addressed when approving antidotes for use in food animals. This article provides a brief history of antidote availability, current mechanisms for procuring food animal antidotes, and availability of specific antidotes for use in food animals.  相似文献

It is not capacity that explains the differences that exist between individuals, because most seem to have far more capacity than they will ever use. The differences that exist between individuals seem to be related to something else. Researchers have studied these phenomena and have looked for new ways to stimulate individuals to improve their natural abilities. Some of the methods discovered have produced lifelong effects. Today, many of the differences between individuals can now be explained by the use of early stimulation methods, socialization, and enrichment experiences. For example, early life has been found to be a time when the physical immaturity of an organism is susceptible and responsive to a restricted but important class of stimuli. Because of its importance, many studies have focused on the first year of life. Newborn pups are different from adult dogs in several respects. When born, pups' eyes are closed, their temperature is subnormal, and their digestive system has a limited capacity, requiring periodic stimulation by their dam, who routinely licks them to promote digestion. Other mammals such as mice and rats are also born with limitations, and they also have been found to show a similar sensitivity to the effects of early stimulation. Studies show that removing them from their nest for 3 min each day during the first 5–10 days of life causes body temperatures to fall below normal. This mild form of stress is sufficient to stimulate hormonal, adrenal, and pituitary systems. When tested later as adults, these same animals were better able to withstand stress than littermates who were not exposed to the same early stress exercises. As adults, they responded to stress in “a graded” fashion, whereas their nonstressed littermates responded in an “all or nothing way.” The results show that early stimulation can have positive results but must be used with caution. Too much stress can cause pathologic adversities rather than physical or psychologic superiority. Socialization and enrichment experiences have also been found to make important differences in the development of the adult dog.  相似文献

The extreme 5' end, the entire leader sequence of the Arvac vaccine strain, and 10 equine arteritis virus (EAV) isolates, including the ATCC Bucyrus reference strain and 5 Canadian field isolates, were determined and compared at the primary nucleotide and secondary structure levels. The leader sequence of eight EAV isolates, including the Bucyrus reference strain, and the leader sequence of the Arvac vaccine strain was determined to be 206 nt in length (not including the putative 5' cap structure-associated nucleotide) whereas those of the 86AB-A1 and 86NY-A1 isolates were found to be 205 and 207 nt in length, respectively. The sequence identity of the leader sequences, between the different isolates and the Bucyrus reference strain, ranged from 94.2 to 98.5%. Phylogenetic analysis and estimation of genetic distances, based on the leader nucleic acid sequences, showed that all EAV isolates/strains are likely to represent a large phylogenetically-related group. An AUG start codon found at position 14 in all EAV isolates/strains could initiate an open reading frame (ORF) that could produce a polypeptide of 37 amino acids, except for the 86NY-A1 isolate where the intraleader polypeptide would contain 54 amino acids. Computer-predicted RNA secondary structures were identified in the 11 EAV leader regions analyzed. All EAV isolates/strains showed 3 conserved stem-loops (designated A, B and C). An additional conserved stem-loop (D) was observed in 7 EAV isolates, including the Bucyrus reference strain. The leader region distal to stem-loop D did not contain conserved sequences or stem-loop structures common to the EAV isolates/strains.  相似文献

University-based veterinary teaching hospitals must change to maintain their viability. A number of factors both internal and external to universities and the veterinary profession have contributed to the need for change. A task force formed by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians was convened to identify the issues and propose individual and collective strategies for the future. Primary issues include a shortage of faculty and staff, the nature of the case load, the need for fiscal management strategies, and the need to manage stakeholder expectations. The majority of the proposed strategies for the future will be managed individually by the colleges. Proposed collective strategies center on increasing the number of specialists and improving recruitment and retention of faculty and staff.  相似文献

The costs involved in building a small animal hospital are discussed. Running costs and gross turnover are compared immediately before and after building.

SUMMARY


We have attempted to discuss in the frankest possible manner the economics of a purpose-built small animal hospital. It must be remembered, however, that the financial return is only one factor to be considered in such a project. Pleasant working conditions for veterinary surgeon and lay staff, improved waiting facilities, more efficient reception, better surgical facilities and better patient accommodation have led in this practice to a much improved standard of veterinary medicine and surgery. Thus animal, client, staff and veterinary surgeon all benefit from improved facilities.
During the next decade there is little doubt many more hospitals will be built in this country. At the moment many of our colleagues are considering taking what is probably the biggest, single, financial investment of their lives. We hope this paper will assist them in making this decision.
Résumé. Les auteurs donnent des précisions sur les dépenses à engager pour la construction d'un hôpital pour petits animaux et sur les frais généraux et le chiffre d'affaires brut immé-diatement avant et après la construction.
