The presence of benzimidazole-resistant strains of equine small strongyles was confirmed in horses at two properties in north west England by a series of faecal egg counts and larval cultures after treatment with mebendazole. A trail formulation of mebendazole in combination with piperazine citrate gave greater reductions in faecal egg counts than mebendazole alone but was much less effective than pyrantel embonate or dichlorvos.  相似文献

A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of benzimidazole (BZ)-resistant small strongyles in horses in a southeastern Pennsylvania practice. Resistant parasites were found in 291 of 342 horses surveyed. Anthelmintic practices and pasture management factors in use for 3 to 6 years did not correlate with the presence of resistant small strongyles. Benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles were recovered in horses that had been treated alternately with BZ and non-BZ products and in horses receiving BZ products as infrequently as twice a year. However, inasmuch as the horses may have been infected with resistant small strongyles before the various anthelmintic schedules were implemented, it was not possible to attribute BZ-resistance to any particular pattern of drug use. Fifty-one (14.9%) horses had BZ-susceptible small strongyles: these horses were on poor overall parasite control programs and had received BZ products no more than once a year. Benzimidazole-piperazine and non-BZ drugs were effective in herds infected with BZ-resistant small strongyles.  相似文献

Horses with a history of frequent benzimidazole (BZD) treatment were used in a trial to assess the effectiveness of oxibendazole (OBZ). Initial investigations established that these animals were infected with small strongyles resistant to thiabendazole (TBZ), mebendazole (MBZ), cambendazole (CBZ), oxfendazole (OXF) and fenbendazole (FBZ).The herd was subsequently divided into four groups and received TBZ, CBZ, OBZ, or no treatment. OBZ effectly reduced fecal egg counts. Similar reductions were not observed with TBZ or CBZ.  相似文献

Twenty horses were treated with ivermectin either by nasogastric tube with a liquid formulation for sheep or per os with a paste formulation for horses at a dosage of 200 μg/kg of body weight. Fecal samples were collected from these horses and from ten untreated horses at the time of treatment and every 2 wk thereafter for up to 10 wk. The samples were examined for nematode eggs using the Cornell-McMaster dilution and the Cornell-Wisconsin Double Centrifugation procedures.

There were no signs of toxicosis in horses treated with ivermectin. Strongyle eggs were found in the feces of all horses before treatment. Subsequently, they were found in untreated horses, but not in treated horses at 2 wk nor in most of them for up to 8 wk after treatment. At 10 wk most of these horses had strongyle eggs in their feces, but in general fewer than at pretreatment.

Objective To compare the efficacy of moxidectin to ivermectin, oxibendazole and morantel against some gastrointestinal nematodes in horses.
Design Faecal egg count reduction after treatment.
Procedure A farm was selected where the population of small strongyles in horses was known to be resistant to oxibendazole. Horses were allocated to treatment groups based on faecal egg counts. After treatment, faecal samples were taken up to 109 days after treatment and faecal egg counts estimated. Faecal cultures were used to estimate the contribution of small and large strongyles to the faecal egg counts at each sampling.
Results Moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) suppressed faecal egg counts for 109 days after treatment in most horses compared to 40 days with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg), 13 days with morantel (9.4 mg/kg) and less than 13 days with oxibendazole (10 mg/kg). Most of the faecal egg count was attributable to small strongyles based on faecal culture, although Strongylus vulgaris was present in some samples in low numbers. Oxibendazole resistance in small strongyles was confirmed and a less than expected efficacy of morantel was also seen.
Conclusion Moxidectin was highly effective in reducing faecal egg counts after treatment for at least 12 weeks and up to 16 weeks in most horses. These horses were infected with a population of small strongyles known to be resistant to oxibendazole and possibly morantel. The duration of the reduction in faecal egg counts after treatment with moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was at least twice that of ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) and greater than four times that for morantel and oxibendazole.  相似文献

The prevalence of benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles was determined in a survey, conducted on 14 thoroughbred studs, which compared the faecal egg counts of groups of horses before and after treatment with the recommended doses of cambendazole (20 mg kg-1 b.w.) or febantel (6 mg kg-1 b.w.). Benzimidazole-resistant cyathostomes were found on all farms examined. Pyrantel pamoate (19 mg kg-1 b.w.), oxibendazole (10 mg kg-1 b.w.) and ivermectin (0.2 mg kg-1 b.w.) reduced the strongyle egg counts on these studs by 97-100% at 2 weeks post-treatment. However, 6 weeks after dosing the reduction of the strongyle egg output had decreased to an average of 67.8% (8.7-97.1%) with pyrantel pamoate and 51.2% (0-95.8%) with oxibendazole, whereas ivermectin still suppressed the egg counts by 98.2% (95-100%).  相似文献

CAnine Hip Dysplasia is a heritable condition affecting the coxofemoral joints. It is due to the development of a pathological laxity within the joint. Which in turn leads to traumatic secondary osteoarthritic changes. The clinical expression of the disease is a hind-limb lameness or decreased exercise tolerance. Diagnosis of this condition by clinical signs alone is unreliable as large numbers of affected dogs are asymptomatic. Therefore, other more accurate diagnostic methods have been developed.  相似文献

Oxibendazole (OBZ; 10 mg/kg of body weight) was administered to ponies at 8-week intervals to control strongylosis in a breeding band of Shetland-type ponies (n = 29 to 50) from October 1978 through September 1984. A similar use of cambendazole (CBZ; 20 mg/kg of body weight) in this band of ponies during the preceding 4-year period resulted in the survival of a CBZ-resistant population (S) of small strongyles. Effectiveness of OBZ treatments was monitored by pre- and posttreatment counts of the number of strongyle eggs per gram of feces (epg) and of the number of strongyle larvae per gram of feces (lpg). For the first 4 years of the 6-year period, epg and lpg counts were determined for 3 to 5 of the OBZ treatments; during the last 2 years, counts were determined for each treatment. For the 1st year, the mean reduction in epg was 96%. During the 2nd and 3rd years, mean reductions in epg were 80% and 81%, respectively. For the 4th and 5th years, mean reductions in epg were 69% and 43%, respectively. For the 6th year, the mean reduction in epg was 37%. Statistical analyses of the epg data, using the linear plateau method, indicated a significant increase in residual (surviving) strongyle infections after the periodic OBZ treatments, with a mean annual increase in survival of 10.3% for the 6 years. Changes in lpg were variable, but an overall loss of effectiveness of the OBZ treatments was evident. Only infective larvae of small strongyles were observed in the cultures; larvae of 2 species of large strongyles, Strongylus vulgaris and Strongylus edentatus, were conspicuously absent.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy and the so-called "egg reappearance period" (ERP) of doramectin in horses naturally infected with strongyles during a period of 34 weeks. A group of yearlings of 10 animals was treated intramuscularly with doramectin at a dose rate of 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight (BW) at the begin of the grazing season. To obtain comparable data, another group of yearlings (n = 10) was treated orally with ivermectin at a dose rate of 0.2 mg/kg BW. Individual faecal samples were examined for strongyle egg counts per gram of faeces (EPG) in two-week intervals. Twelve weeks later, a second treatment was given in both groups with the respective anthelmintic followed by a third treatment when the group mean egg count reached > or = 200 EPG. The efficacy of doramectin was > or = 96 % and that of ivermectin 100%, based on the mean egg counts two weeks post treatments (wpt). The highest and the lowest extensity of the efficacy (average values) for doramectin were 90% and 41% two and ten wpt, respectively, whereas these values for ivermectin differed from 100% (two wpt) to 24.3% (eight wpt). The ERP was found to be 10 and 8 weeks for doramectin and ivermectin, respectively.  相似文献

Eighteen helminth-free lambs were randomly allocated to six groups of three. Each lamb was dosed with 3300 infective larvae pooled from two isolates of Nematodirus spathiger known to be benzimidazole resistant. One lamb from each group was treated with oral ivermectin, one with oral oxfendazole and one left untreated 21 days after infection. All lambs were humanely killed 14 days later and small intestine worm counts performed. No Nematodirus were found in the ivermectin-treated lambs. Nematodirus numbers were reduced by 13% in oxfendazole-treated lambs relative to the control lambs.  相似文献

Two trials involving a total of 36 Dorset horn lambs were conducted to assess the anthelmintic efficacy of ivermectin against experimental infections of benzimidazole-resistant strains of Haemonchus contortus and Ostertagia circumcincta. Two resistant strains of each of the two species were used and in each trial the lambs were allocated to three groups. One group was given 200 micrograms ivermectin/kg bodyweight orally, the second group was given 5 mg oxfendazole/kg bodyweight orally and the third group remained untreated as controls. Fourteen days after treatment the lambs were necropsied. Ivermectin was found to be more than 99 per cent to 100 per cent effective against all four benzimidazole-resistant strains, whereas oxfendazole was 78.6 per cent and 83.8 per cent effective against the H contortus strains, and 25.6 per cent and 39.8 per cent effective against the O circumcincta strains.  相似文献

Seven critical tests in equids were conducted with single doses of fenbendazole (5 mg kg-1) alone (Panacur--American Hoechst, Somerville, NJ); (2 tests with paste and 1 with suspension formulation) or in combination with piperazine (American Hoechst); (40 mg base kg-1); (4 tests with paste formulation). The main purpose of the tests was evaluation of activity against benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles (Cyathostomum catinatum, Cyathostomum coronatum, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicostephanus goldi, and Cylicostephanus longibursatus). Natural infections of 2 populations of benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles were evaluated; 1 was population B in 2 horses and the other was population S in 5 ponies. Removal of the 5 species of population B was 49-91% in the animal treated with fenbendazole paste alone and 100% (4 of these species present) in the animal treated with the combination. For population S, 2 of the 5 resistant species were present in small numbers in 1 animal treated with fenbendazole paste alone and all were removed; the 1 animal receiving fenbendazole suspension alone had removals of 0-70% for the 5 benzimidazole-resistant species. Also for population S, the 5 resistant species were present in 2 animals treated with the paste combination and removal was 98-100% and of 4 of the 5 resistant species in 1 animal, removal was 76-99%. Removal of large strongyles (Strongylus vulgaris and Strongylus edentatus) was 92-100% for fenbendazole paste alone or in combination with piperazine in the 5 infected animals. For Oxyuris equi, present in 1 animal treated with the combination, there was 91% removal of immature and 100% removal of mature specimens. There probHably was no activity by fenbendazole alone or the combination against bots, tapeworms, and parenteral stages of S. vulgaris and S. edentatus. The combination may have had some activity against immature Habronema spp. and mature abronema muscae.  相似文献
