In this study, influence of impregnating wood particles with mimosa bark extract on the some properties of particleboard was investigated. Properties evaluated were modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond (IB), thickness swelling (TS), and formaldehyde emission (FE). The results showed that particleboards made from particles impregnated with mimosa bark extract had significantly lower mechanical, physical and formaldehyde emission values than those of the boards made from unimpregnated particles. Brushing of mimosa bark extract to the surfaces and edges of the particleboards did not affect the mechanical properties, statistically. However, this application caused a significant improvement in the thickness swelling and formaldehyde emission.  相似文献

With the rapid growth in the ethanol fuel industry in recent years, considerable research is being devoted to maximizing the use of processing coproducts, such as distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), typically for livestock diets. Because these residues contain high fiber levels, they may be amendable to incorporation into polymers as well, which is an option that could garner greater economic returns. Thus, the goal of this study was to demonstrate the viability of using corn-based DDGS as a biofiller with phenolic resin, in order to produce a novel biomaterial. DDGS was blended with phenolic resin at four levels (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75%, by weight), and then compression molded at 13.8, 34.5, or 48.3 MPa (1.0, 2.5, or 3.5 tons/in.2) and 157, 174, or 191 °C (315, 345, or 375 F). Molded specimens were then tested for a variety of mechanical and physical properties. Pressure and temperature each had little effect on the resulting properties. DDGS, on the other hand, greatly influenced all of the properties. Tensile yield strengths ranged from 14.5 MPa (2102 psi) to 4.3 MPa (621 psi), while the Young's modulus ranged from 2296 MPa (333,000 psi) to 841 MPa (122,000 psi) as the DDGS content increased. For all time periods studied, water absorption increased as DDGS level increased. Moreover, as DDGS content increased to a maximum of 75%, biodegradability increased from 0% to 38% while the surface hardness decreased 25%. These results were similar to those from other studies that have investigated biofillers. Follow-up studies should aim to optimize the strength of the DDGS-blended resins through the use of coupling agents or other additives.  相似文献

Bagasse particleboards (BPBs) were made using polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) resin as binder and wax emulsion as dimension stabilizer. A factorial experiment was conducted to measure the effects of wax and pMDI resin content on particleboard dimension stability and mechanical properties. The data were compared with respective properties specified in the ANSI A208.1 standard for commercial M3 grade wood-based particleboard.Wax-sizing improved the linear expansion (LE) of the particleboards under both pMDI resin contents used in this research and all LE values were controlled under the critical value of 0.35%. The use of wax significantly reduced 24-h water absorption and thickness swelling compared to the control panels without wax. Wax-sizing at the moderate levels also showed positive influence on long-term water absorption and thickness swelling properties. Wax content levels, however, did not significantly influence water absorption and thickness swelling behavior. Wax-sizing had no evident negative effects on the bending properties of MDI-bonded bagasse particleboards under both resin contents, while it caused slightly negative effect on internal bond strength. Mechanical properties of all boards far exceeded the minimum values specified in ANSI A208.1 standard. The entire properties of the 5% pMDI BPBs were better than those of the 3% pMDI panels as expected.  相似文献

In this study, the influence of press cycle time and resin content (RC) on some of the physical and mechanical properties of single-layer particleboard manufactured from the low-quality raw materials were determined. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), saltcedar (Tamarix stricta) and date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) wood, which is underutilized invasive species in southern parts of Iran, were used as alternative raw materials for particleboard manufacturing. Variable factors were as resin content (9, 10 and 11%) and press time (PT) (4, 5 and 6 min). Other parameters such as type of resin (UF), hardener content (2%), type of hardener (NH4Cl), press-closing time (4.5 mm/s), board density (0.75 g/cm3), press pressure (30 kg/m2) and press temperature (160 °C) were held constant. The experimental panels were tested for their mechanical strength including modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bonding (IB) and physical stability properties (thickness swelling) according to the procedures defined by European Union (EN) Standard. Overall results showed that most panels made from above-mentioned materials exceed the EN Standards for IB, MOE and MOR. The mechanical properties of particleboard were improved as the resin content increased from 9 to 11%. The results indicated that the polymerization of resin and wood is better at 11% resin content and 5 min of press time. However, thickness-swelling (TS) values were higher (poor) than requirements. Panels made of mesquite, saltcedar and date palm with a resin content of 11% and pressed for 5 min is adequate for general uses while eucalyptus with a resin content of 11% and pressed for 6 min is suitable for interior decoration.  相似文献

Grindelia chiloensis (Corn.) Cabr. is a shrub native to Patagonia, Argentina and can accumulate as much as 25% resin in its leaves, with net primary productivity between 90 and 170 g per year per plant when growing in native stands. Under cultivation, 67.4 g of resin per plant have been produced (about 2.24 Mg ha−1). The objective of this study was to assess the effect of irrigation regime on biomass and resin production on G. chiloensis. In order to achieve this objective, four irrigation treatments were performed during 1996–1997 and 1997–1998: (i) weekly irrigation (7d), (ii) irrigation at 20-day intervals (20d), (iii) irrigation at 40-day intervals (40d), (iv) non-irrigated (N-I). It was found that the intermittent water supply at 40d was sufficient to promote canopy development, and increase water use efficiency (WUE) and resin production per plant (RP) with highest resin production (approximately 5.12 Mg ha−1 in 1997). In order to achieve high levels of RP, above ground biomass was maximized at the expense of a reduction in WUE. A concomitant increase in WUE (at the leaf level; WUEL) and leaf resin content with water stress and time was found. This result supports the hypothesis that epicuticular resin could influence water transpiration (E), as it represents an additional barrier to gas diffusion from the epidermis and through the stomatal pores.  相似文献

Guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray) is a source of high quality rubber and low-allergenic latex as well as resin for use as a wood preservative. Demand for high value latex products has increased with the advent of deadly diseases such as AIDS. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of six improved guayule lines (AZ-1 to AZ-6) in south-east Queensland: released jointly by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and The University of Arizona. Trials were conducted at two sites, Chinchilla and Gatton. Overall performance of improved lines for plant growth and yield of dry matter, rubber and resin was better at both Gatton and Chinchilla than the standard check lines (N 565 and 11591). AZ-1 and AZ-2 maintained the best combinations of desirable traits, including plant uniformity, early vigorous growth, increased dry matter, and increased rubber and resin yields. Of these two, AZ-2 had more uniform plant growth and has commercial potential for Queensland production areas. In the summer harvest at Gatton, 32-month-old AZ-1 and AZ-2 produced rubber yields of 789 kg/ha and 771 kg/ha, respectively, while controls, N 565 and 11591 produced 675 kg/ha and 618 kg/ha, respectively. At Chinchilla, at 33 months, spring harvested AZ-1 and AZ-2 produced rubber yields of 717 kg/ha and 787 kg/ha; these yields were significantly higher than N 565 and 11591 which produced 385 kg/ha and 380 kg/ha, respectively. Thus, rubber yields of AZ-1 and AZ-2 were consistently high across sites. AZ-1 and AZ-2 produced resin yields of 1158 kg/ha and 1115 kg/ha at Gatton and 1318 kg/ha and 1476 kg/ha at Chinchilla. This compared with a mean of 612 kg/ha and 352 kg/ha for the standard check lines at Gatton and Chinchilla. Thus resin yields of AZ-1 and AZ-2 were consistently high across sites. Rubber content appeared to be influenced by time of harvest although this effect is compounded with plant age. At Gatton, in spring, 17-month-old plants produced a mean rubber content of 7.7% (all lines), while, in summer, when the plants were 32-month-olds, rubber content dropped to 6.4%. At Chinchilla, 33-month-old plants harvested in spring produced a mean rubber content of 7.4%, similar to the spring value at Gatton. By contrast, resin content appeared to be little affected by season.  相似文献

Effect of pressing time on physical and mechanical properties of phenolic-impregnated bamboo strips was evaluated. Bamboo strips (Gigantochloa scortechinii) were impregnated with low molecular weight phenol formaldehyde (LMwPF) resin. Samples were submerged in LMwPF resin using a vacuum chamber of 750 mmHg for 1 h before it was released within 1.5 h. Treated strips were dried in an oven with a temperature of 60 °C within 6–9 h. It was hot pressed at 14 kg m?2 and a temperature of 140 °C for 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 min. The physical and mechanical properties of the test indicated that the properties of phenolic-treated strips have significantly increased as compared to control samples. Dimensional stability (water absorption, thickness swelling and linear expansion) of the phenolic-treated properties were significantly lower than control after 5-min pressing time. The antishrink efficiency (ASE) of phenolic-treated strips increased when pressing time were extended from 5 to 17 min. The mean value of modulus of rupture (MOR) for the control samples (177 N mm?2) showed a significant difference with phenolic-treated strips after 17-min pressing time (224 N mm?2). However, there is no significant difference in compression parallel to grain. The MOE of phenolic-treated strips was 21,777 N mm?2 and for control was 18,249 N mm?2, whereas the compression parallel to grain values for phenolic-treated and control samples were 94 and at 77 N mm?2, respectively.  相似文献

Maleated graft polyolefins as cross-linking agents (CAs) are widely used to improve properties of wood thermoplastic composites made by melt extrusion process. In this study, novel CAs, free isocyanate group (NCO)-terminated urethane pre-polymers (UPs) were synthesized and used in manufacturing wheat straw (WS)/recycled polyethylene (PE) composites. The composites using polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) as a CA were also made in comparison. The relationship between composite properties and the level of CA and its content as well as the composite density and hot pressing time were investigated based on wood based board processes. The results show that the internal bonding (IB) strength, the IB after soaked in boiling water for 2 h (2hWIB), the modulus of rupture (MOR), the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the 24 h thickness of swell after absorption of water (24hTS) of the composites are significantly improved with increased CA contents and composite densities. The optimal hot pressing time is 1.1 min/mm at 180°C. The cross-linking function is attributed to the reaction between free NCOs of CA molecules with hydroxyls of WS and the moisture in the raw materials, as well as the interaction between weak polar chain segments in the CA molecules to the non-polar PE. It is highly feasible to manufacture high quality composite using WS and recycled PE as raw materials when cross-linked with just 2.5% of UPs.  相似文献

Aligned epoxy-matrix composites were made from hemp fibres defibrated with the fungi Phlebia radiata Cel 26 and Ceriporiopsis subvermispora previously used for biopulping of wood. The fibres produced by cultivation of P. radiata Cel 26 were more cellulose rich (78%, w/w) than water-retted hemp due to more degradation of pectin and lignin. The defibrated hemp fibres had higher fibre stiffness (88–94 GPa) than the hemp yarn (60 GPa), which the fibre twisting in hemp yarn might explain. Even though mild processing was applied, the obtained fibre strength (643 MPa) was similar to the strength of traditionally produced hemp yarn (677 MPa). The fibre strength and stiffness properties are derived from composite data using the rule of mixtures model. The fibre tensile strength increased linearly with cellulose content to 850 MPa for pure cellulose. The fibre stiffness increased also versus the cellulose content and cellulose crystallinity and reached a value of 125 GPa for pure crystalline cellulose.  相似文献

Rice husk is a by-product of rice milling process, and a great resource as a raw biomass material for manufacturing value-added composite products. One of the potential applications is to use rice husk as filler for manufacturing gypsum–rice husk boards for wall and ceiling materials for construction. We investigated the effect of rice husk, addition on selected physico-mechanical properties, total volatile organic compound (TVOC), and incombustibility, on the gypsum board. With increasing rice husk contents, water and moisture absorption was decreased. Because of the replacement of pore between gypsum particles by rice husk, the moisture absorption was decreased as rice husk adding contents. By rice husk adding, MOR of the gypsum–rice husk boards were increased up to 9.8 MPa at 30 wt%. However, MOR was decreased more than 40 wt% of adding contents. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) showed similar behavior with MOR. However, internal bonding strength (IB) was slightly increased as rice husk adding contents up to 20 wt%, 0.5 MPa and decreased over 20 wt%. The incombustibility of the gypsum–rice husk boards decreased on increasing the rice husk adding content. However, up to 30 wt% of rice husk adding contents board samples was of incombustibility first class. Gypsum particle can be replaced up to 30 wt% by rice husk with incombustibility first class for housing materials. In all cases, TVOC emission factor and formaldehyde emission remained under the ‘Excellent’ grade as defined by Korean Air Clean Association (KACA).  相似文献

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a herbaceous annual plant amenable to use as a papermaking raw material. Kraft and soda pulping of kenaf have so far been done exclusively on the bark fraction (about 34–38% of the stem) or whole stem of the plant. Using kenaf bark exploits the higher quality of its bast fibers but reduces the typically high crop yields of this plant. In any case, core kraft pulp has acceptable properties some of which (e.g. tensile index, burst index) can even surpass those of bark pulp. Pulp made from both fractions has been found to exhibit better bonding properties than bark pulp. However, too high a proportion of core fibers can result in difficult drainage, a low tear strength or poor air permeability. These problems restrict the proportion of core that can be mixed with bast fibers, hinders separation of the two fractions and raises operational costs. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the core–bark ratio on the properties of mixed kenaf pulp. We used unrefined core pulp and refined bark pulp. Based on the results for kraft sacks, obtaining kenaf paper from both fractions has some advantages. Because Gurley air porosity changed dramatically with the proportion of core pulp used, it was used to determine the maximum amount of core fibers to be added to bast fibers. A proportion of up to 34% was found to have no adverse effect on air permeability. Such a proportion allowed paper strength to be preserved with an acceptable tear index (19.8 mN m2/g) and excellent tensile index (72 N m/g). Also, energy consumption was reduced if only the bark fraction was refined. The proposed strategy thus provides increased fiber yields of kenaf per hectare per year and valorizes the core fraction.  相似文献

Hardwood saw mill residues have traditionally not been favoured by the particleboard industry (or indeed other forest product industries) owing to their high density and extractives content. However, re-growth and plantation of timber industry has been producing hardwood saw mill residues with lower extractive contents and lower densities in recent years. The work presented here deals with investigating the use of hardwood saw mill residue, which is currently treated as solid waste, in producing industry-grade particleboard. A crossed experimental design covering seven process parameters with two levels was performed to manufacture three-layer particleboards in the laboratory to investigate effects of processing parameters on physical and mechanical properties of final boards. Although, resin surface and pressing time are significantly influencing both mechanical and physical properties of hardwood particleboard, moisture core increases the thickness swelling and reduces the mean density. However, the need for higher moisture content and resin load compared to those of softwood particleboard need to be addressed further to achieve an economically feasible product.  相似文献

The potential of chestnut shell and eucalyptus bark extracts as phenol substitutes in the formulation of adhesives, as chrome substitutes in leather tanning and as a source of antioxidants compounds has been studied. The influence of extraction conditions, type and concentration of alkaline compounds (NaOH, Na2SO3 and Na2CO3) and temperature, on extraction yield and on extract characteristics: Stiasny number, tannin content, total phenols content, FRAP (ferric reducing/antioxidant power) antioxidant capacity and molecular weight distribution was analysed. Chestnut shell extracts had much better properties than eucalyptus bark extracts and significantly higher extraction yields were obtained. The increase of temperature from 70 to 90 °C not only increased the extraction yield but also improved the quality of the extracts. For both materials, the 2.5% Na2SO3–90 °C extract, together with the 2.5% NaOH–2.5% Na2SO3–90 °C extract for chestnut shell, showed high extraction yields and the best properties for all the applications proposed.  相似文献

Guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray) is a perennial shrub native to the Chihuahuan Desert. While guayule traditionally has been cultivated for rubber, more recently it is being cultivated for its hypoallergenic latex. Other uses including termite resistant wood products and an energy source have also been identified. However, the effects of various agronomic practices, such as planting and harvesting dates, plant spacing, cutting height and frequency, irrigation frequency, and herbicide application, on latex concentration and yield of newly developed germplasm have not been reported. The objectives of this study were to determine the yield and concentration of latex, rubber, and resin of four guayule lines planted at two populations and two planting dates. Four guayule lines (AZ-1, AZ-3, AZ-5, and 11591) were transplanted at two dates (28 November 2000 and 7 June 2001) and two plant populations (27,000 and 54,000 plants ha?1). Treatments were replicated four times. Each treatment plot was subdivided into six subplots for harvesting at 6-month intervals beginning 1 year after transplanting. Results showed that transplanting date did not affect plant size or latex concentration or yield consistently. Instead, it appeared that the time of harvest (fall vs. spring) was more important. The sixth (last harvest) in the fall planting date and the fifth harvest date in the spring planting date were the optimum for plant biomass and latex, rubber, and resin concentrations and yields. The lines AZ-1 and AZ-3 were larger, whereas AZ-5 had higher latex and rubber concentrations than the control, 11591. The greater plant population (54,000 plants ha?1) had higher biomass, rubber, and resin yields than the lower population (27,000 plants ha?1) at the early harvest dates, but not at the later harvest dates (5 and 6). More studies must to be conducted to determine the optimum plant population and transplanting date for other newly developed guayule germplasm lines.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted on two soils in a semiarid area in the Spain’s Ebro valley. Soil A was a Fluventic Xerochrept of 120 cm depth and Soil B was a Lithic Xeric Torriorthent of 30 cm depth. Three tillage systems were compared in Soil A: subsoiler tillage, minimum tillage and no-tillage, and two (minimum tillage and no-tillage) in Soil B. The experiment was repeated for 5 years on Soil A and 3 years on Soil B. Root length density, volumetric water content and dry matter were measured at important developmental stages. Yield was determined at harvest. In Soil A, root length density and volumetric water content were significantly greater for no-tillage than for subsoiler or minimum tillage (up to 1.4 cm cm−3 and 5%, respectively), mainly in the upper part of the soil profile. At lower depths, differences as great as 0.8 cm cm−3 and 6% were also found. Mean yield (4 years) was similar between no-tillage (3608 kg ha−1) and minimum tillage (3508 kg ha−1), and significantly smaller for subsoiler tillage (3371 kg ha−1). In Soil B, no differences were observed between tillage systems for volumetric water content. Significant interactions between tillage and year were found for root length density, dry matter and yield. Mean yield (3 years) was not significantly different for minimum tillage (1806 kg ha−1) and no-tillage (1867 kg ha−1). The results in Soil A showed that surface conditions are of major importance in the water content of the soil and determined the differences among tillage systems. No-tillage favoured greater and deeper water accumulation in the soil profile and greater root growth. This makes this system potentially better for years of low rainfall. In Soil B no tillage system proved to be better because of the low water-holding capacity of this soil (56 mm).  相似文献

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) stalks, which are a readily available by-product of this plant mainly cultivated for seed production, derived from experimental plantations grown in Northern Greece during the period April–October 1996 were assessed for their suitability as feed stocks for direct substitution of wood in particleboard. The average stalk yield of castor reached about 10 dry t/ha, which is higher than the average yield of forest in temperate zones. After harvesting, castor stalks were dried in a greenhouse to about 12% moisture content, and chipped by an automobile chipper and re-chipped in a hammermill. Castor particles and industrial wood particles mixed in various proportions were used as raw material for one-layer and for the middle layer of three-layer particleboards. A commercial E2 grade UF-resin was used as binder. Castor particles were characterized by a lower slenderness ratio and lower bulk density than industrial wood particles. The evaluation of the mechanical and hygroscopic properties of panels showed the following results: Partial substitution of wood by castor stalks resulted in the deterioration of all board properties. The presence of the unlignified pith and the configuration of castor particles seem to be responsible for the deleterious effect of castor stalks on board properties. However, comparing the properties of the boards produced in this study to relevant European and American Standards, it was found that, with the exception of screwholding strength for three-layer boards, the experimental one layer-, and three-layer boards containing up to 25% and 75% castor particles respectively meet or exceed the Standards requirements for interior boards.  相似文献

Modelling of the Acetosolv treatment of the cardoon bark (Cynara cardunculus) was accomplished using a second-order face-centred factorial design. We considered as independent (experimental) variables: cooking time (60–180 min), acetic acid concentration in the cooking liquor (60–90%) and hydrochloric acid concentration in the cooking liquor (0.20–0.80%); as well as dependent variables: pulp yield, kappa number and viscosity.Empirical models were deduced to satisfactorily fit experimental data with the values of the independent variables and allow quantifying the effects of each variable. An optimisation with constraints led to the calculation of the region of the experimental domain (time = 180 min, acetic acid concentration  71.3% and HCl concentration > 0.41%) leading to pulps with kappa numbers < 25 at a maximal pulp yield and viscosity, giving us maximum possible values for pulp yield (46.3%) and viscosity (557 mL/g).  相似文献

Water sorption isotherms and effective moisture diffusivities were determined at 20 °C for sponge cakes at high water activity as a function of their initial porosity, in the range 86 and 52% (0 g/g dry basis fat content), and of their fat content, ranging between 0 and 0.30 g/g dry basis (67% initial porosity). The equilibrium moisture values were not affected by food structure and decreased with increasing fat content. The effective moisture diffusivity decreased from 7.5 to 0.3×10−10 m2/s with increasing moisture content from 0.30 to 2.20 g/g dry basis. Decreasing initial porosity from 86 to 52% decreased effective moisture diffusivity by more than four orders of magnitude. This behaviour was related to differences of water transfer mechanisms, with the contribution from liquid water diffusion in the solid matrix and from vapour water diffusion in pores. Increasing fat content of 0.30 g/g dry basis in sponge cake, independently of porosity, decreased effective moisture diffusivity by more than five orders of magnitude. A predictive mathematical model was used to simulate moisture intake in two-composite food systems: sponge cakes with varying initial porosities and fat contents and an agar gel as a model of a non-rate limiting water source. Increasing the density of the structure or addition of fat in the cereal-based phase could increase shelf life of composite foods.  相似文献

An important aspect of extraction using an organic solvent that is often ignored in many laboratory scale studies is thorough solvent recovery. Although most of the solvent can be recovered with a centrifuge, the solvent left on the ‘dry’ stream must be evaporated. A custom built pilot-scale settling tank was used to separate maize particles from ethanol extracts into water with little dilution of the extract liquid. The larger particles that settled in the first one-fourth of the tank were carried out by a continuous water flow 76 cm below the extract layer. The large particles had 80% higher protein mass fraction than the smaller particles that collected in the bottom of the settling tank downstream from the extract inlet. Water flow was confined to the bottom of the tank and extracted particles were prevented from accumulating in the settling tank with a much lower water/extract flow rate ratio than needed for a smaller settling tank. The mass ratio of entrained extract liquid/settled solids (0.5) was one-half that observed in previous methods using smaller tanks. This is caused by a more stable extract/water interface. The yield from finer, 1 mm meal, was slightly lower than 2 mm meal and increased extract liquid entrainment. Consequently, the 2 mm particle size is the minimum that should be used with this process.  相似文献

Structure and health effects of inulin-type fructans have been extensively studied, while less is known about the properties of the graminan-type fructans in wheat. Arabinoxylan (AX) is another important indigestible component in cereal grains, which may have beneficial health effects. In this study, the fructan content in milling fractions of two wheat cultivars was determined and related to ash, dietary fibre and AX contents. The molecular weight distribution of the fructans was analysed with HPAEC-PAD and MALDI-TOF MS using 1H NMR and enzymatic hydrolysis for identification of fructans. The fructan content (g/100 g) ranged from 1.5 ± 0.2 in flour to 3.6 ± 0.5 in shorts and 3.7 ± 0.3 in bran. A correlation was found between fructan content and dietary fibre content (r = 0.93, P < 0.001), but with a smaller variation in fructan content between inner and outer parts of the grain. About 50% of the dietary fibre consisted of AX in all fractions. The fructans were found to have a DP of up to 19 with a similar molecular weight distribution in the different fractions.  相似文献
