Purpose

Shallow soils previously cultivated under terraced systems may change their properties after agricultural release and spontaneous plant colonization. Investigations were conducted in terraced fields (NE Spain) to prove that vegetation installed after the abandonment may generally improve soil properties by the formation of stable organic horizons. However, restriction in plant species along the natural vegetation succession and intensification of erosion processes may occur after abandonment depending on fire frequency and soil use history.

Materials and methods

Ten environments with different plant covers under a Lithic Xerorthent were selected and erosion plots (Gerlach type) installed providing their best adaptability at the terrace scale. Selected soil environments represented the sequence of abandonment: from current poorly cultivated soils, soils under pasture, soils under shrubs, and soils under stands of pine and cork trees. Relevant rainfall events producing runoff and erosion were recorded from November 2011 to May 2012. Erosion rates and erosion components were analysed in sediments and water in order to monitor carbon, nitrogen and other nutrient removal by overland flow. Similarly, the physical and chemical properties of the soil environments under study were determined at the same time interval of runoff erosion.

Results and discussion

Soils under pasture, vines and recently burnt pine forest produced the highest runoff followed by soils under shrubs and forest. However, eroded soil yields and nutrient removal were much higher in cultivated soils and soils in recently burnt sites, which had shown poorer soil properties with respect to soils abandoned for longer and preserved by fire. Fire-affected soil environments also showed a thinner organic horizon and reduced water retention. Although erosion rates and nutrient depletion were low in all environments with respect to other areas of Spain, higher splash than water erosion was an early warning indicator of the high susceptibility to degradation of these shallow soils.

Conclusions

Results outlined that the renaturalization dynamics after agricultural abandonment are complex biophysical processes involving the parent material, depth to bedrock and other soil properties as well as the succession of vegetative cover and plant associations responsible for building a new soil mantle contrasting with erosion processes. Planning for management of land abandonment is strongly recommended.

Purpose

The impact of agriculture on water resources has long been a problem associated with the formation of runoff, the siltation of lakes and reservoirs, and overall depletion of water quality. In Brazil, these problems are mainly related to soil degradation by water erosion. However, studies of catchment-scale erosion are still rare particularly in grain-producing regions which have adopted conservative tillage systems for soil protection. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of conservation agriculture on water resources, this study determined the runoff coefficient and sediment yield for two agricultural catchments.

Materials and methods

Hydrological and sedimentological monitoring was conducted in two catchments: the Conceicao catchment is characterized by grain production in weathered soils and a gently sloping landscape, while the Guapore catchment is characterized by heterogeneous soils and topography. Both catchments have problems associated with water erosion.

Results and discussion

The magnitudes of annual runoff coefficients and sediment yield were high, even if compared to similar agricultural regions, including a catchment with widespread adoption of no-tillage. The sediment yield was 140 t km?2 year?1, and the runoff coefficient was 14 % for the Conceicao catchment, while the sediment yield was 270 t km?2 year?1, and the runoff coefficient was 31 % for the Guapore catchment. The results indicate that problems such as gullies, soil compaction, runoff, floods, siltation, and water quality depletion associated with the misuse of agricultural areas in terms of soil conservation and water use are still evident and important even in regions with widespread adoption of no-tillage systems.

Conclusions

The magnitudes of both runoff and sediment yield clearly indicate the need to adopt complementary practices of soil conservation measures, such as mechanical runoff control.  相似文献

Purpose

Depositional seals, formed when turbid waters infiltrate into soils, lead to a reduction in soil hydraulic conductivity (HC) and enhance runoff and soil erosion. Since clay size particles constitute a dominant proportion of depositional seals, soil texture and clay mineralogy play a significant role in determining the seal’s hydraulic characteristics. Presence of high molecular weight anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) in suspension flocculates fine sediments, and therefore, its application to the soil surface may modify the characteristics of the depositional seal. The impact of PAM on the latter is expected to be influenced by soil properties. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of PAM application on clay flocculation and the HC of depositional seals formed in four soils varying in texture (ranging from loamy sand to clay loam), and diverse proportions of clay mineral constituents (kaolinite, smectite, and vermiculite).  相似文献

Purpose

Shifts of microbial biomass and functional diversity under different vegetation patterns can impact the soil processes, and the specific knowledge about this can be used to develop sound vegetation restoration strategies. This study was devoted to examine the effects of different vegetation patterns on microbial biomass and functional diversity and explore the relationship between soil erosion and soil microbial properties under typical erosion conditions of the semiarid hilly area of the Loess Plateau, China.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope

Large areas of red soil in southern China are degraded due to improper management in land use change from forest to agricultural crops in 1970s, which has resulted in serious soil erosion. Since 1980s, artificial revegetation has been practiced to restore the productivity and maintain ecological functionality of red soils. Whereas numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of revegetation on soil physical and chemical properties, little information is available on soil microbial responses. The objective of this work was thus to investigate the influence of plant species and growing period on soil biochemical and biological properties.  相似文献

Mineral fertilizers, organic amendments, and pesticides are inputs commonly used in conventional farming practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of single or combined applications of spent grape marc-vermicompost, urea, and/or diuron on soil-enzyme activities and the persistence of this herbicide in soils with low organic carbon content. The application of vermicompost enhanced dehydrogenase (DHase) enzyme activity over time but altered soil urease activity to a very limited extent. The reduction in diuron concentrations and the increase in DHase activity indicated that the soil microorganisms were capable of degrading the ureic herbicide. Treatment with vermicompost and diuron had a stimulatory effect on soil microbial activity. On the whole, the application of diuron and urea to the vermicompost-amended soil raised DHase and urease activity to maximum levels (>3 μg INTF g?1 h?1 and >47 μg NH4+ g?1 h?1, respectively). The application of urea to the unamended and vermicompost-amended soil decreased diuron persistence from 18.8 and 33 d to 12.5 and 15 d, respectively. Our findings show that although vermicompost additions reduce diuron availability, this boosts diuron degradation when combined with urea. These additions, under different soil management conditions, minimize the bioavailability and persistence of diuron and consequently the risk of leaching and seepage into aquifers. Compared with untreated soils, these types of treated soils could also improve agricultural sustainability and the quality of the environment.  相似文献

Purpose

Although the challenge of linking pedology and hydrology has been identified recently, the microbial diversity in floodplain soils has been studied little in comparison to terrestrial soils. In terrestrial soils, the relationship between soil microbial biomass (SMB) determined by substrate-induced respiration (SIR) and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) was examined in several studies. Floodplain soils reveal substantially different properties; they are exposed to drastic changes in water regime from flooded to dry conditions. The relation between SMB determined by SIR and PLFA has, up to the present, not been adequately proved in floodplain soils. Thus, this study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between SMB determined with both methods in a set of floodplain soils of eleven study sites from three study areas along the Elbe River (Germany).  相似文献

Purpose

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal, accumulated in soil by anthropogenic activities and has serious effects on soil microbial activities in contaminated soils. Moreover, there is a lack of reliable data on the effects of Cd in the soil-plant system, since most of the information on Cd-microorganism interactions in soils are based on sewage sludge without plants. The main objective of this study was to assess the effects of Cd on soil microbial activities and community structure during growth of plant.  相似文献

Slope length effects on microbial biomass and activity of eroded sediments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Purpose

Due to climatic and topographic conditions, soil erosion is a major problem in Turkey; approximately 86% of the land is suffering from some degree of erosion. This study investigated the relationship between bare soil slope length and the erosion-induced degradation of soil quality and the loss of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from the microbial biomass in eroded sediment in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey.  相似文献

Purpose

Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria have been described by both culture-dependent and -independent methods in various environments, including freshwater, marine sediments, natural wetlands, and contaminated aquifers. However, little is known about iron-reducing microbial communities in paddy soils. The goal of this study was to characterize iron-reducing microbial communities in paddy soil. Moreover, the effect of dissolved and solid-phase iron (III) species on the iron-reducing microbial communities was also investigated by enrichment cultures.  相似文献

Purpose

In a 6-year study, we investigated the effectiveness of blind inlets as a conservation practice in reducing pesticide losses compared to tile risers from two closed farmed depressional areas (potholes) in the US Midwest under a 4-year cropping rotation.

Materials and methods

In two adjacent potholes within the same farm and having similar soils, a conventional tile riser and blind inlet were installed. Each draining practice could be operated independent of each other in order to drain and monitor each depression with either practice. Sampling events (runoff events) were collected from the potholes from 2008 to 2013 using autosamplers. The samples were analyzed for atrazine, metolachlor, 2,4-D, glyphosate, and deethylatrazine.

Results and discussion

The results of this study demonstrated that the blind inlet reduced analyzed pesticide losses; however, the level of reduction was compound dependent: atrazine (57 %), 2,4-D (58 %), metolachlor (53 %), and glyphosate (11 %).

Conclusions

Results from this study corroborate previous research findings that blind inlets are an effective conservation practice to reduce discharge and pollutants, including pesticides from farmed pothole surface runoff in the US Midwest.

Particulates (ashes) arising from the burning of crop residues are potentially effective adsorbents for pesticides in agricultural soils. To determine the long-term adsorptive sustainability of ashes, a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ash was aged under environmentally relevant conditions (in CaCl(2) solution at room temperature and pH 7) in soil extract for 1 month and in a soil (1% ash) for a period of up to 12 months. The aged ash and ash-amended soil were used to sorb diuron from water. The diuron sorption was also measured in the presence of atrazine as a competing pesticide. There was no observed microbial impact on the stability of the wheat ash in soil. All isotherms with the ash were nonlinear type-I curves, suggestive of the surface adsorption. On a unit mass basis, the ash in soil extract was 600-10000 times more effective than the soil in sorbing diuron. Adsorption of dissolved soil organic matter (DOM) during aging on the ash surfaces reduced the diuron adsorption by 50-60%. Surface competition from the atrazine adsorption also reduced the ash adsorption of diuron by 10-30%. A total of 55-67% reduction in diuron sorption by the ash-amended soil was observed. Due to its high initial adsorptivity, the ash fraction of the aged ash-amended soil contributed >50% to the total diuron sorption. Thus, the wheat ash aged in the soil remained highly effective in adsorbing diuron. As crop residues are frequently burned in the field, pesticides in agricultural soils may be highly immobilized due to the presence of ashes.  相似文献

Purpose

Sealing of soils prevents the exchange of gas, water and nutrient between soil and other environmental compartments, and affects urban N flux, thereby resulting in certain negative impacts on soil functioning and urban environment. However, little information is available on the biogeochemical cycling and biological activities after sealing of soils in urban areas. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of soil sealing on N transformation and associated microbial properties.  相似文献

Stormwater wetlands collect and attenuate runoff-related herbicides, limiting their transport into aquatic ecosystems. Knowledge on wetland bacterial communities with respect to herbicide dissipation is scarce. Previous studies showed that hydrological and hydrochemical conditions, including pesticide removal capacity, may change from spring to summer in stormwater wetlands. We hypothesized that these changes alter bacterial communities, which, in turn, influence pesticide degradation capacities in stormwater wetland. Here, we report on bacterial community changes in a stormwater wetland exposed to pesticide runoff, and the occurrence of trz, atz, puh, and phn genes potentially involved in the biodegradation of simazine, diuron, and glyphosate. Based on T-RFLP analysis of amplified 16S rRNA genes, a response of bacterial communities to pesticide exposure was not detected. Changes in stormwater wetland bacterial community mainly followed seasonal variations in the wetland. Hydrological and hydrochemical fluctuations and vegetation development in the wetland presumably contributed to prevent detection of effects of pesticide exposure on overall bacterial community. End point PCR assays for trz, atz, phn, and puh genes associated with herbicide degradation were positive for several environmental samples, which suggest that microbial degradation contributes to pesticide dissipation. However, a correlation of corresponding genes with herbicide concentrations could not be detected. Overall, this study represents a first step to identify changes in bacterial community associated with the presence of pesticides and their degradation in stormwater wetland.  相似文献

Land preparation for mechanisation in vineyards of the Anoia–Alt Penedès region, NE Spain, has required major soil movements, which has enormous environmental implications not only due to changes in the landscape morphology but also due to soil degradation. The resulting cultivated soils are very poor in organic matter and highly susceptible to erosion, which reduces the possibilities of water intake as most of the rain is lost as runoff. In order to improve soil conditions, the application of organic wastes has been generalised in the area, not only before plantation but also every 3–4 years at rates of 30–50 Mg ha 1 mixed in the upper 30 cm.These organic materials are important sources of nutrients (N and P) and other elements, which could reduce further fertilisation cost. However, due to the high susceptibility to sealing of these soils, erosion rates are relatively high, so a higher nutrient concentration on the soil surface increases non-point pollution sources due to runoff. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of applied composted cattle manure on infiltration, runoff and soil losses and on nutrients transported by runoff in vineyards of the Alt Penedès–Anoia region, NE Spain. In the two plots selected for the analysis, composted cattle manure had been applied in alternate rows 1 year previous to the study. In each plot soil surface samples (0–25 cm) were taken and compared to those of plots without manure application. The study was carried out at laboratory scale using simulated rainfall. Infiltration rates were calculated from the difference between rainfall intensity and runoff rates, and the sediment and total nitrogen and phosphorus were measured for each simulation. In addition, the influence of compost was investigated in the field under natural rainfall conditions by analysing the nutrient concentration in runoff samples collected in the field (in the same plots) after seven rainfall events, which amount different total precipitation and had different erosive character.Compost application increases infiltration rates by up to 26% and also increases the time when runoff starts. Sediment concentration in runoff was lower in treated (13.4 on average mg L 1) than in untreated soils (ranging from 16.8 to 23.4 mg L 1). However, the higher nutrient concentration in soils produces a higher mobilisation of N (7–17 mg L 1 in untreated soils and 20–26 mg L 1 in treated soils) and P (6–7 mg L 1 in untreated soils and 13–19 mg L 1 in treated soils). A major part of the P mobilised was attached to soil particles (about 90% on average) and only 10% was dissolved. Under natural conditions, higher nutrient concentrations were always recorded in treated vs. untreated soils in both plots, and the total amount of N and P mobilised by runoff was higher in treated soils, although without significant differences. Nutrient concentrations in runoff depend on rainfall erosivity but the average value in treated soils was twice that in untreated soils for both plots.  相似文献

Purpose

Eighteen soils were sampled in the Lake Aydat catchment in order to analyse free fatty acid (FA) content; FAs are considered to be among the most amenable biomarkers to mobilisation by runoff waters. The majority of the study area has soil cover consisting of grasslands or forest since the 2nd World War, although some covers having changed more recently.  相似文献

Purpose

The herbicide diuron has the unfortunate property of being strongly adsorbed onto soil organic matter particles, and hence, is slowly degraded in the environment because of its reduced bioavailability. The aim of this work was to gain insight into the fate and behaviour of diuron in the soil–water system, and develop and test an environmentally friendly soil decontamination technique that could give rise to an enhancement of diuron mineralisation by sensitive soil endogenous microorganisms, by means of increasing the bioavailability of the pollutant employing cyclodextrin (CD) solutions what would represent an improvement from both economic and environmental standpoints.

Materials and methods

Selected soil colloidal components: montmorillonite, a synthetic humic acid and a synthetic acicular goethite, and two different soils were employed in this study to perform batch adsorption–desorption experiments. Desorption experiments were performed using a 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 solution with and without hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) 50 mM. Assays to study the mineralisation of 14C-labelled diuron were performed in respirometers, into which 10 g of soil and 50 mL of mineral salts medium (MMK) were placed, obtaining a final concentration of 50 mg?kg?1 and a radioactivity of approximately 900 Bq per flask.

Results and discussion

Humic acid could be clearly discerned as the major colloidal component responsible for adsorption. HPBCD was used in diuron desorption experiments from soil, showing a strong extracting power on its removal. The mineralisation of diuron in the presence and absence of HPBCD was tested in a soil managed with diuron for several years, involving therefore the presence of microorganisms that have some specificity for diuron. Natural soil attenuation for diuron was improved when a HPBCD solution was used in the presence of micronutrients as a bioavailability enhancer, obtaining 66 % of mineralisation in comparison to that obtained with only micronutrients addition (44 %).

Conclusions

The use of HPBCD solution at a very low concentration of only 10 times the diuron equimolar concentration in soil, acts as a bioavailability enhancer, accelerating the passage of the diuron-desorbing fraction from the soil particle surface to the soil solution, and hence, improving the accessibility of the microorganisms to the herbicide. Diuron mineralisation rate and the extent of its mineralisation were improved when the HPBCD solution was employed in the presence of micronutrients.  相似文献

Purpose

Information about phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural catchments in Mediterranean environments is scarce. In this work, P losses in overland flow from two representative small Mediterranean catchments, one dominated by Alfisols and the other by Vertisols, were studied.

Materials and methods

At the lowest level of each catchment, overland flow was measured and several runoff samples taken in each runoff event during two growing seasons (2001–2002 and 2002–2003). After centrifugation, total P in sediments and total and molybdate reactive P in supernatant were determined. Different chemical extraction methods were used to quantify the forms of P in soils and sediments.

Results and discussion

Total P losses in the studied catchments ranged between 0.5 and 3.2 kg ha?1 year?1, losses higher than 2 kg P ha?1 being observed in one event. Phosphorus was mainly lost in the sediments, the ratio of total dissolved P to particulate P being higher in the Alfisol than in the Vertisol catchment. Phosphorus concentration in sediments from the Vertisol catchment was similar to that in the source soils, whereas sediments in the Alfisol catchment had 2.1 times more inorganic P and 9 times more organic P (OP) than the source soils. In the latter catchment, there was an enrichment in the more labile inorganic P forms in the sediments relative to the source soils, which corresponds to a relative enrichment in iron (Fe) oxides by a factor of 2.4. Alfisols had lower TP contents and exhibited lower erosion rates than Vertisols in the studied period but they posed a greater environmental risk than the latter soils because their sediments were richer in P and had a higher proportion of P in forms bound to the Fe oxides compared to the source soils—these P forms can be easily released with the onset of reducing conditions at the bottom of waterbodies.

Conclusions

A study of the P enrichment ratios and the dominant P forms in eroded sediments is therefore necessary to predict the impact of P losses from soils on the ecological quality of waterbodies.  相似文献

Purpose

Closed erosion plots have been used extensively to investigate soil loss and its spatial variation within a watershed. However, erosion rates measured on closed plots at various locations within a watershed may not reflect the “real world” conditions due to plot boundary problems. The purpose of this study was to identify runoff and sediment sources in a semi-arid, complex terrain catchment by using the data collected from open plots, nested catchments, and tunnel systems.

Materials and methods

The study catchment, in the Loess Plateau of China, was partitioned into various-level geomorphic units. Runoff and sediment discharges were measured from 55 storm events between 1963 and 1968 on open plots and nested catchments. Storm flows were also monitored in 14 rainfall events from the tunnel systems between 1989 and 1990. This study combined the data collected from the two periods to investigate runoff and sediment sources from the different geomorphic units of the catchment.

Results and discussion

On the four open plots (S1, S2, S3, and S4) of the hill slope, total runoff depths of 128.5 mm (S1), 84.3 mm (S2), 101.92 mm (S3), and 141.73 mm (S4) were recorded from all the events over the first period, which correspondingly produced total sediment yields of 3.056 kg m?2 (S1), 9.058 kg m?2 (S1), 42.848 kg m?2 (S3), and 97.256 kg m?2 (S4). The number of runoff events also varied due to a non-uniformity in runoff generation among the different geomorphic units of the catchment. Tunnel flows generally had higher mean sediment concentrations than catchment outflows. Three nested catchments located from the headwaters (C1) to the mouth of the catchment (C3) generated total runoff depths of 120.02 mm (C1), 143.92 mm (C2), and 149.43 mm (C3), and correspondingly produced sediments yields of 62.01 kg m?2 (C1), 144.02 kg m?2 (C2), and 123.92 kg m?2 (C3) for the first period.

Conclusions

Significant variations in runoff and erosion existed within the catchment. The spatial variation of runoff generation on the hill slopes resulted from the variation of soil infiltration. Sediment produced from the lower hill slope zone was disproportionally higher than that from the upper hill slope zone. Nevertheless, a significant portion of the sediment eroded on the lower slope zone was caused by runoff generated from the upper slope zone. Tunnel erosion also played a significant role in sediment production.  相似文献

Purpose

The particle-size distribution of runoff sediment is important in understanding, characterizing and modeling the transport behavior of sediment and sediment-associated chemicals. The objective of this study was to investigate the particle-size distribution of sediments eroded from three soils in China under natural rainfall.

Materials and methods

Each of the three soils was packed to a depth of 30 cm in a 20?×?2.1 m runoff plot. Sediments yielded in nine natural rainfall events were analyzed for their particle-size distribution prior to and following dispersion.

Results and discussion

The sediment size measured in the undispersed condition was always larger than the one determined after chemical dispersion, indicating that part of the sediment was eroded in aggregated form. The degree of sediment aggregation depended on the clay content and the organic matter content of the sources. The mean sediment size quantified by mean weight diameter linearly increased with sediment yield for the two soils with relatively high clay content. The rate of increase was greater in the undispersed condition than that in the dispersed condition for these two soils. Comparing sediments to the corresponding source soil, the results of mean weight diameter and enrichment ratio both revealed that aggregate-size distribution was more sensitive to soil erosion than the primary particle-size distribution. Small aggregates, rather than the primary particles, were selectively eroded in the rainfall events.

Conclusions

These findings support the use of both dispersed and undispersed sediment-size distributions for the characterization of sediment transport and the associated sediment-bound nutrients and contaminants.
