Using an absorption cell, we measured the Doppler shifts of the interstellar hydrogen resonance glow to show the direction of the neutral hydrogen flow as it enters the inner heliosphere. The neutral hydrogen flow is found to be deflected relative to the helium flow by about 4 degrees . The most likely explanation of this deflection is a distortion of the heliosphere under the action of an ambient interstellar magnetic field. In this case, the helium flow vector and the hydrogen flow vector constrain the direction of the magnetic field and act as an interstellar magnetic compass.  相似文献

Models for fundamental physical interactions allow for the existence of stable or nearly stable elementary particles much heavier than the proton. Stellar spectra were searched for a positively charged superheavy particle, X(+), which, with a bound electron, should appear as apparently superheavy neutral hydrogen in the interstellar medium. An upper limit for the abundance of X relative to normal hydrogen in the line of sight toward the bright star gamma Cassiopeiae is 2 x 10(-8).  相似文献

Interstellar hydrogen ionized primarily by the solar wind has been detected by the SWICS instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft at a distance of 4.8 astronomical units from the sun. This "pick-up" hydrogen is identified by its distinct velocity distribution function, which drops abruptly at twice the local solar wind speed. From the measured fluxes of pick-up protons and singly charged helium, the number densities of neutral hydrogen and helium in the distant regions of the solar system are estimated to be 0.077 +/- 0.015 and 0.013 +/- 0.003 per cubic centimeter, respectively.  相似文献

The warped heliospheric current sheet for early 1976 is calculated from the observed photospheric magnetic field by a potential field method. Comparisons with measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field polarity for early 1976 obtained at several locations in the heliosphere by Helios 1, Helios 2, Pioneer 11, and at the earth show a rather detailed agreement between the computed current sheet and the observations. It appears that the large-scale structure of the warped heliospheric current sheet is determined by the structure of the photospheric magnetic field and that "ballerina skirt" effects may add small-scale ripples.  相似文献

Photochemically generated hot hydrogen atoms initiate reactions with simple molecular substrates including methane to produce organic alcohols, amines, acids, amino acids, and other compounds. The typical quantum yields for the formation of amino acids are 2 x 10(-5) to 4 x 10(-5). Hot hydrogen atoms may be important initiators of reactions in interstellar space and in planetary atmospheres.  相似文献

A submillimeter heterodyne radiometer, developed for astronomical applications, uses an optically pumped laser local oscillator and a quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer. The resultant telescope-mounted system, which has a noise temperature less than 4000 K (double sideband) and high frequency and spatial resolution, has been used to detect the J = 6 --> 5 rotational transition of carbon monoxide at 434 micrometers in the Orion molecular cloud. The measurements, when compared with previous millimeter-wave data, indicate that the broad carbon monoxide emission feature is produced by an optically thin gas whose temperature exceeds 180 K.  相似文献

Three-dimensional simulations of the heliospheric modulation of galactic cosmic ray protons show that corotating variations in the intensity can persist to quite high heliographic latitudes. Variations are seen at latitudes considerably higher than the maximum latitude extension of the heliographic current sheet, in regions where the solar wind velocity and magnetic field show no significant variation. Similar conclusions may apply also to lower energy particles, which may be accelerated at lower latitudes. Cosmic ray variations caused by corotating interaction regions present at low heliographic latitudes can propagate to significantly higher latitudes.  相似文献

Trophoblast adhesion to the uterine wall is the requisite first step of implantation and, subsequently, placentation. At the maternal-fetal interface, we investigated the expression of selectin adhesion systems that enable leukocyte capture from the bloodstream. On the maternal side, human uterine epithelial cells up-regulated selectin oligosaccharide-based ligands during the window of receptivity. On the fetal side, human trophoblasts expressed L-selectin. This ligand-receptor system was functional, because beads coated with the selectin ligand 6-sulfo sLe(x) bound to trophoblasts, and trophoblasts bound to ligand-expressing uterine luminal epithelium in tissue sections. These results suggest that trophoblast L-selectin mediates interactions with the uterus and that this adhesion mechanism may be critical to establishing human pregnancy.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectroscopic analyses of suspensions of quinazoline and Na(+)-saturated montmorillonite have indicated that covalent hydration of the monovalent organic cation is inhibited at or near the clay surface. A similar lack of hydration was observed in solutions of quinazoline and high-ionic-strength calcium chloride. The inhibition is attributed to a local competition between quinazoline and the inorganic cations for water of hydration.  相似文献

Magnetic field measurements from the Ulysses space mission overthe south polar regions of the sun showed that the structure and properties of the three-dimensional heliosphere were determined by the fast solar wind flow and magnetic fields from the large coronal holes in the polar regions of the sun. This conclusion applies at the current, minimum phase of the 11-year solar activity cycle. Unexpectedly, the radial component of the magnetic field was independent of latitude. The high-latitude magnetic field deviated significantly from the expected Parker geometry, probably because of large amplitude transverse fluctuations. Low-frequency fluctuations had a high level of variance. The rate of occurrence of discontinuities also increased significantly at high latitudes.  相似文献

Understanding the nature of solid-liquid interfaces is important for many processes of technological interest, such as solidification, liquid-phase epitaxial growth, wetting, liquid-phase joining, crystal growth, and lubrication. Recent studies have reported on indirect evidence of density fluctuations at solid-liquid interfaces on the basis of x-ray scattering methods that have been complemented by atomistic simulations. We provide evidence for ordering of liquid atoms adjacent to an interface with a crystal, based on real-time high-temperature observations of alumina-aluminum solid-liquid interfaces at the atomic-length scale. In addition, crystal growth of alumina into liquid aluminum, facilitated by interfacial transport of oxygen from the microscope column, was observed in situ with the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.  相似文献

The orientation of the local interstellar magnetic field introduces asymmetries in the heliosphere that affect the location of heliospheric radio emissions and the streaming direction of ions from the termination shock of the solar wind. We combined observations of radio emissions and energetic particle streaming with extensive three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic computer simulations of magnetic field draping over the heliopause to show that the plane of the local interstellar field is approximately 60 degrees to 90 degrees from the galactic plane. This finding suggests that the field orientation in the Local Interstellar Cloud differs from that of a larger-scale interstellar magnetic field thought to parallel the galactic plane.  相似文献

Biological matrices can direct the absolute alignment of inorganic crystals such as calcite. Cooperative effects at an organic-inorganic interface resulted in similar co-alignment of calcite at polymeric Langmuir-Schaefer films of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (p-PDA). The films nucleated calcite at the (012) face, and the crystals were co-aligned with respect to the polymer's conjugated backbone. At the same time, the p-PDA alkyl side chains reorganized to optimize the stereochemical fit to the calcite structure, as visualized by changes in the optical spectrum of the polymer. These results indicate the kinds of interactions that may occur in biological systems where large arrays of crystals are co-aligned.  相似文献

为了研究碳纤维应用于建筑木构件及其节点加固工程中的长期承载性能,采用持续负载的剪切试验方法对碳纤维木材复合材结合层在高湿(温度60℃,相对湿度90%),低湿(温度24℃,相对温度45%)环境条件下的蠕变性能进行了研究.结论表明:Burger模型可较精确地模拟复合材结合层的短期剪切性能(R2≥98%);高湿环境下结合层剪切蠕变量显著大于低温环境,温度及相对湿度都是影响蠕变的重要因素;结合层厚度越大,剪切蠕变变形也越大,应力松弛较大,建议碳纤维与木材复合时施加一定的压力(0.05 MPa以上)以减少结合层厚度;高温环境下高应力水平的蠕变速率最大,较短时间便出现结合层断裂,在碳纤维设计应用时,应确保结合层剪切应力水平在极限应力的50%以内.图3参12  相似文献

Human neutrophils can initiate the rapid degradation of extracellular matrix macromolecules by localizing the destructive process to sites of cell-substrate contact. Although plasma and its filtrates contain multiple proteinase inhibitors, these inhibitors did not prevent neutrophils from attacking either underlying fibronectin or elastin. However, subjacent substrates could be protected from neutrophils by recombinant secretory leukoprotease inhibitor, a structurally unique serine proteinase inhibitor whose natural counterpart is normally confined to human mucous secretions. The identification of this extravascular proteinase inhibitor as a potent regulator of subjacent proteolysis could lead to the development of a new class of anti-inflammatory therapeutics.  相似文献
