Records on crossbred calves from the eight crosses between Angus (A) and Hereford (H) cows, and A, H, Jersey, Simmental and Brahman sires, and raised in two pasture programs were used to assess sire × pasture interactions on preweaning traits. There were 518–734 calves from 252–318 dams and 122–166 sires in the data set; numbers vary by traits. Sires, AI or natural service, constituted a representative sample of the breeds. Pasture programs differed principally in the winter period (tall fescue hay vs. corn silage). Heritabilities across and within pastures were: 0.28±0.19 and 0.28 ± 0.19 for birth weight (BW ); 0.08 ± 0.58 and 0.58 ± 0.19 for weaning weight (WW); 0.30 ± 0.41 and 0.71 ± 0.19 for weight adjusted to 205 days (W205); 0.00 ± 0.00 and 0.36 ± 0.15 for daily gain (DG); 0.61 ±0.35 and 0.94±0.25 for frame score (FRAM); 0.14±0.38 and 0.53±0.22 for muscle score (MUSC); and 0.00±0.00 and 0.14±0.21 for conformation score (CONF), respectively. Correlations between progenies of the same sire in different pasture programs are: 1.00±0.00 for BW; 0.13±0.99 for WW; 0.42±0.58 for W205; 0.00±0.00 for DG; 0.65±0.34 for FRAM; 0.27±0.71 for MUSC; and 0.00±0.00 for CONF. Except for birth weight, estimates (although imprecise) suggest that changes in the ranking of sires should be expected to occur between the two environments, possibly in part from incomplete adjustment for changes in season of calving between pasture environments for calves sired by the same sire.  相似文献

The literature indicates that sire breed of calf influences beef calf performance. However, there is little information concerning sire breed of calf effects on reproduction in beef cows. In this experiment, Angus (A), Brahman (B), or Tuli (T) bulls were bred to 136 Brahman (B) cows to examine sire breed of calf influence on peripartum hormone profiles and the length of postpartum anestrus. Cows were bled from 7 d prepartum to 28 d postpartum to determine peripartum hormone concentrations. Cows carrying AB calves had greater (P < 0.05) prepartum estradiol-17β concentrations than did cows carrying BB and TB calves. Prepartum and postpartum progesterone concentrations did not differ between cows with AB, BB, and TB calves. Cows with TB calves had lower (P < 0.01) 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 (PGFM) concentrations than did cows with AB and BB calves during the early postpartum period. Adjusting for birth weight removed the sire breed of calf effect on postpartum PGFM concentrations, but not prepartum estradiol-17β. Postpartum anestrus was shorter (P < 0.05) for cows nursing BB calves (84 ± 6 d) than for cows nursing AB (101 ± 6 d) or TB calves (110 ± 7 d). Adjustment for estradiol or PGFM concentrations did not reduce sire breed of calf effects on the length of postpartum anestrus. Further work is needed to determine how calf genotype may modulate the postpartum reproductive function of the dam.  相似文献

Preweaning data collected at two locations (Kentucky, Louisiana) were utilized to evaluate breed-of-sire comparisons involving the Senepol breed of cattle. For the Kentucky study, calves sired by Senepol bulls were 1.3 kg heavier (P less than .05) at birth than calves sired by Hereford bulls; however, weaning weights were similar for the two sire groups. For the Louisiana study, calves sired by Longhorn bulls were 5.3 kg lighter (P less than .01) at birth, 20 kg lighter (P less than .01) at weaning and had weaning condition scores .5 unit less (P less than .01) than the average of calves sired by Red Poll and Senepol bulls. Also, heifers exposed to Longhorn bulls weaned 23 kg less (P less than .01) calf per heifer exposed than the average of heifers exposed to Red Poll and Senepol bulls. Calves sired by Red Poll bulls were 1.2 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and 12 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning than those sired by Senepol bulls; however, the Senepol-sired calves received higher (P less than .01) condition scores at weaning. Heifers exposed to Red Poll bulls weaned 20 kg more (P less than .05) calf per heifer exposed than did heifers exposed to Senepol bulls.  相似文献

Angus, Polled Hereford and Santa Gertrudis bulls from ages 1 through 5 and 7 yr were assigned to 26 two-sire breeding groups. Each year, straightbred and crossbred cows of these breeds were allotted at random within breed composition, age of dam and calving date to breeding groups on pasture. Sires within each breeding group or pair were the same age at breeding and were two of the three breeds of sires. Neither calving rate nor the proportion of calves born by one vs the other sire in the two-sire breeding groups was affected by sire age among breeding groups. For a given breed, there was no uniformity among the sires in the proportion of calves they sired in their two-sire breeding groups. The proportion of calves born for the 26 sire pairs averaged .64 vs .36 (SE = 0.4 for either high or low value) for one vs the other sire in a sire pair with no indication that calving rate was affected by unequal proportions of calves by sires within sire pairs. Cows calved significantly earlier in the calving period (b = -.775 +/- .127) as calving rate increased among sire pairs. The number of days from the start of the breeding period to calf birth was affected by differences between sires in sire pairs for 8 of the 26 pairs, but there were no significant differences due to sire pair or breed of sire because of interaction between these two variables.  相似文献

Measures of maternal productivity and reproduction of Hereford (HH), Angus-Hereford (AH), 25% Simmental-75% Hereford (1S3H), 50% Simmental-50% Hereford (1S1H) and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford (3S1H) dams were studied. Half of each dam breed group was bred to Tartentaise and half to Charolais sires to produce 706 calves at weaning from 930 exposures to breeding in a Montana range environment. Data were analyzed according to a model that included the fixed effects of year, dam breed group, dam age, calf sex, calf sire breed, plus appropriate two-way interactions, linear partial regression on calf birth date and random effects of sire within dam breed group (maternal grandsire of the calf) and sire within calf sire breed. Calf sex interacted with calf sire breed for several traits, but interactions were due to changes of magnitude of differences between sexes. There were no significant interactions of dam breed group with other main effects for calf growth traits, except for the interaction with calf sire breed for some calf growth traits. This interaction was due to a change in magnitude; it suggested that larger sire breeds should be matched to larger dam breeds with greater potential for milk production. The only significant interaction for traits that included reproduction of the dam was dam breed group X age of dam. Ranking of dam breed groups depended on age at measurement. Differences among dam breed groups were significant for most traits. Calf weaning weights for HH, AH, 1S3H, 1S1H and 3S1H dams were 211, 223, 227, 237 and 243 kg, respectively; calf weaning weights per cow exposed were 157, 163, 179, 189 and 169 kg; calf weaning weights per unit of dam weight were .40, .41, .43, .44 and .42, respectively. Thus, dam breed groups that weaned the largest calves were not necessarily the most productive under Montana range conditions.  相似文献

Birth, weaning, growth and carcass records for calves sired by Angus, Charolais or Piedmontese bulls were used to evaluate the potential contribution of Piedmontese to beef production in the U.S. Bulls were mated by AI to Hereford and crossbred cows and heifers. Calves were born during fall 1985 or spring 1986. Statistical models used to analyze the importance of sire breed used sire nested within sire breed as a random effect. Effects of sex, birth season, contemporary group, dam breed and parity were considered fixed and tested with the residual error. Piedmontese-sired calves had the longest gestation length, followed by Charolais and Angus-sired calves (287.5, 285.0 and 282.8 d, respectively). Breed of sire was not significant for birth weight, but Piedmontese- and Charolais-sired calves had longer cannon bones than Angus-sired calves. Differences were found for weaning hip height, but weaning weights, weaning muscle scores and ADG during the preweaning period were similar for calves by the three sire breeds. When fed to a similar fat thickness, Angus-sired calves required fewer days on feed, produced lighter carcasses and gained less per day than Charolais- or Piedmontese-sired calves. Piedmontese-sired calves required more days on feed than Charolais-sired calves when slaughtered at a similar subcutaneous fat thickness. Piedmontese-sired calves produced carcasses with a larger average rib eye area, higher dressing percentage and lower (more desirable) yield grade than Charolais- or Angus-sired calves. No significant sire breed differences were detected for tissue cholesterol content.  相似文献

Cow size, reproductive traits and calf performance through weaning were evaluated in a range environment for Simmental (S) x Hereford (H) and Angus (A) x H crosses in two-breed rotations and straightbred H. Data were grouped into seven dam breed categories: straightbred Hereford (H), crossbred F1 S x H cows (SH), S x H cows of low percentage H (SHS), S x H cows of high percentage H (HSH), F1 A x H cows (AH), A x H cows of low percentage H (AHA) and A x H cows of high percentage H (HAH). Straightbred H, SH, AH, SHS and AHA cows were mated to H bulls, HSH cows were mated to S bulls and HAH cows were mated to A bulls. Cows in the SHS and AHA groups ranged from 1/4 to 3/8 H and their calves from 5/8 to 11/16 H. Cows within the HSH and HAH groups ranged from 5/8 to 3/4 H and their calves from 5/16 to 3/8 H. Cow age ranged from 3 to 10 yr. Simmental-cross cows were heavier and taller and produced heavier calves at birth and weaning than A-cross. Pregnancy rate, calf birth date and percentage of difficult births did not vary significantly among dam breed groups. Steer progeny (n = 122) of tropically adapted breeds [Tuli (TU) and Brahman (BR)] and temperate breeds [Angus (AN) and Hereford (HP)] was evaluated for carcass traits for 3 yr. Multiparous British (Bt) cows were bred to each sire breed. Following weaning in the fall, steers were provided bermudagrass hay and a supplement until rye was available, which they grazed until March. Steers were fed for 100 to 110 d beginning in March. Live weight (LWT); hot carcass weight (HCW); longissimus area (LEA); percentage kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (KPH); actual fat thickness (ACT); adjusted fat thickness (ADJ); marbling score(MARB); maturity score(MAT); quality grade (QG); yield grade (YG); dressing percentage(DP); and LEA per unit of LWT (LEACWT) were collected. Data were analyzed by Proc MIXED using a model that included year, sire breed, and year × sire breed. Sire breed was a significant source of variation for all traits except LEA. The effect of year was significant for all traits, and year × sire breed was significant for only LWT. Least square means for LWT and HCW ranked the breeds similarly; the AN-sired calves (576 kg, 333 kg) and BR-sired calves (574 kg, 334 kg) were heavier than the TU-sired calves (526 kg, 304 kg), and the HP-sired calves had intermediate LWT and HCW (562 kg, 320 kg). The actual and adjusted fat means were larger (P<0.02) for AN-sired calves, HP-sired cavles were intermediate, and the BR- and TU-sired steers were similar with less external fat. The TU-sired calves had the largest LEA relative to weight. The AN- and TU-sired groups had a similar percentage grading Choice (26 and 21%, respectively), and the percentage grading Choice for the other two sire breed groups was 12% for BR and 18% for HP. In conclusion, carcass merit of TU-sired calves provides an acceptable alternative to BR-sired calves for producers desiring a tropically adapted sire breed, but they will likely produce smaller slaughter BW than BR sires if managed similarly.  相似文献

Objectives of this study were to evaluate effects of seven sire breed groups and three levels of daily ME intake (DMEI = 132 or 189 kcal ME/kg BW(0.75) or ad libitum), beginning 5 mo prepartum, on BCS, length of postpartum anestrus, and circulating concentrations of IGF-1 and GH in F1 cows (six to eight cows per sire breed in each DMEI group) out of Angus or Hereford dams. At the initiation of the study, BW were 522, 530, 548, 572, 575, 577, and 595 kg for cows sired by Longhorn, Galloway, 1960s Hereford or Angus, 1980s Hereford or Angus, or Nellore, Salers, and Shorthorn bulls, respectively (SE = 13; P < 0.001 for sire breed). After 4 mo on DMEI treatment during the pre-partum period, cows fed 132 kcal of ME/kg BW(0.75)gained little to no BW; cows fed 189 kcal ME/kg BW(0.75) gained 50 kg; and cows fed ad libitum gained 70 kg (all groups differ P < 0.05). Concentrations of progesterone in weekly blood samples collected 2 to 14 wk after calving were used to establish when normal luteal function resumed to predict length of postpartum anestrus. Length of anestrus was affected by level of DMEI in cows sired by Galloway, Longhorn, and Nellore bulls, but not other breeds (P < 0.02 for interaction of sire breed and DMEI). Level of DMEI, but not sire breed, affected (P < 0.01) BCS at wk 2 postpartum. Concentrations of IGF-1 at wk 2 postpartum differed (P < 0.001) due to sire breed, and changes in concentrations of IGF-1 from wk 2 to 14 were influenced (P < 0.03) by the interaction of sire breed and level of DMEI; which was primarily the result of differences in rate of decrease over time among different sire breed x level of DMEI groupings. Concentrations of GH did not differ due to sire breed but varied (P < 0.001) due to the interaction of DMEI and week postpartum, for which concentrations of GH did not differ at wk 2 but increased over time at rates that were inversely proportional to level of DMEI. Length of anestrus was negatively associated (P < 0.05) with day of calving, BCS, and BW. When effects of sire breed and level of DMEI were accounted for (residual correlation), length of anestrus was inversely associated (P < 0.01) with IGF-1 concentrations. Breed of sire influenced length of postpartum anestrus and energy balance, as predicted by IGF-1, in crossbred cows fed varying levels of DMEI.  相似文献

Maternal performance of 134 Hereford (H), Brangus (B), and reciprocal crossbred (H x B and B x H) cows from 2 to 7 yr of age was evaluated under semidesert conditions in this study. Calves produced by 2- and 3-yr-old cows were sired by Brangus and Hereford bulls. Calves produced by 4- to 7-yr-old cows were sired by Charolais bulls. Breed of sire and breed of dam of cow affected kilograms of weaning weight, 205-d weight, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight produced annually. Brangus (either as sire or dam of cow) was superior to Hereford in all cases. Observed maternal heterosis on 2- to 3-yr-old cows was 23.0, 20.1, 30.0, 29.1, 23.9, and 23.0% for calf birth date, weaning percentage, weaning weight per year, 205-d weight per year, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, respectively (P less than .01). Observed maternal heterosis from mature cows was 19.8, 12.8, 21.0, 18.7, 17.4, and 15.4% for calf birth date, weaning percentage, weaning weight per year, 205-d weight per year, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, respectively (P less than .01). Results indicate large heterotic effects on annual cow productivity and an adaptive advantage for cows with Brangus sires and(or) dams under semidesert conditions.  相似文献

Purebred Angus (n = 96) and Polled Hereford (n = 96) bull calves sired by bulls of either low or high yearling weight performance lines were assigned to either creep-fed or non-creep-fed treatment before weaning for four calf crops. For each breed, after weaning in the fall, half of the calves within each of the four groups were fed a high concentrate diet for 189 d after weaning in a feedlot and the remainder were put on winter temporary pastures (rye or ryegrass) followed by summer grazing on pearl millet and bermudagrass pastures for 329 d after weaning. Dependent variables were ADG for various intervals and the complete test period, weight, height and scrotal circumference at periodic intervals, and weight per day of age at regular intervals during the test. The model included breed, performance line, sire nested within breed and line, year, age of dam, preweaning treatment, postweaning treatment, and two- and three-factor interactions. Age of calf was included as a covariate for weight, height, and scrotal circumference measurements. Line and breed differences generally were significant for weight but not for height. The interaction of primary interest (line by preweaning treatment by postweaning treatment) was not significant. The high growth performance line gained faster than low growth performance line for all intervals and were 45 kg heavier by 189 d after weaning. Preweaning treatment did not affect postweaning ADG but did affect weight per day of age. Creep-fed calves were heavier than non-creep-fed calves and maintained this advantage during the postweaning treatment periods in both the feedlot and pasture. Both preweaning treatment groups had similar ADG after weaning. Angus were 23 kg heavier at weaning than Polled Herefords; however, breed weight means were similar by 16 mo of age. In summary, bulls from different selection lines for growth were identified in feedlot and pasture when adjustments were made for prior management effects. The lack of significant interactions in these data indicates that central test station data, appropriately adjusted, are useful for ranking bulls on genetic merit for growth in feedlot and on pasture.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the gestational, periparturient and preweaning growth traits of Holstein vs Gir × Holstein (G × H F1) crossbred dairy calves. Holstein cows (n=64) pregnant with Holstein (H × H) calves (bulls, n=16; heifers, n=18) or G × H (bulls, n=8; heifers, n=22) calves were sampled from 60 days of gestation through calving for serum progesterone (P4) and in utero placentome sizes, and at parturition for calving ease scores (CES), calf vigour scores (CVS), and placental characteristics. Post-calving calf measures included birth weight (day 0) and body weight (kg), hip width (HW), body length (BL), wither height (WH), hip height (HH) and heart girth (HG) through 42 days of age. Serum IgG and calf vital function tests (respiration rate (RR), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (RT) and fecal scores) were recorded on days 1, 3, 7 and 14 of age (a.m. and p.m.). Serum gestational P4 was higher (p<0.05) for cows with H × H than G × H calves. Placentome measurements in utero were greater (p<0.01) for H × H calves than for G × H calves, while at parturition placental characteristics did not differ (p0.10). Gestation length, CES and CVS also did not differ (p0.10) between H × H and G × H calves. Calf RR and HR were higher (p<0.05) for H × H than G × H calves at both a.m. and p.m., while RT, fecal scores and serum IgG did not differ (p0.10) between H × H and G × H calves. Birth weight did not differ (p0.10) between H × H and G × H calves within sex. Moreover, bulls did not differ (p0.10) in any of the growth measures between H × H and G × H calves, whereas H × H heifers at days 28 and 42 of age were greater (p<0.05) in all growth traits than G × H heifers. Nevertheless, the relative change in growth measures over time (days 0 to 42) did not differ (p0.10) between H × H and G × H calves. While subtle differences in gestational, early growth and vital function characteristics were observed, these data suggest very similar developmental profiles between H × H and G × H calves.  相似文献

Over a 2-yr period, effects of genotype and forage on blood metabolites, enzymes, and minerals were determined in Angus, Brahman, Angus x Brahman (sire x dam), and Brahman x Angus cows, and 129 calves from these cows sired by Hereford bulls. Cows and calves continuously grazed either common bermudagrass or endophyte-infected 'Kentucky-31' tall fescue pastures throughout the year. Blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture in April, August, October (weaning), and November (after 30 d in a feedlot) of each year. Plasma urea N concentrations of cows and calves were affected by forage (P < 0.01) and breed (P < 0.05). Plasma cholesterol and FFA concentrations of cows were affected by forage (P < 0.01) and breed (P < 0.05). In calves, antibody titers to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus were not affected by forage but were affected by breed. Serum inorganic P concentrations of calves and cows were affected by forage (P < 0.05). Serum P concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activity of calves were affected by breed (P < 0.05). Calves grazing bermudagrass had higher (P < 0.05) serum concentrations of Fe and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). There was evidence of maternal heterosis for concentrations of free fatty acids, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, Ca, Mg, alkaline phosphatase, ceruloplasmin, Fe, and TIBC. There was evidence of grandmaternal effects for plasma concentrations of urea N, cholesterol, Ca, P, Mg, and alkaline phosphatase. These results suggest that calves and cows grazing tall fescue are generally on a lower plane of nutrition than those grazing bermudagrass and that Brahman x Angus and Angus x Brahman crossbred cows and their calves seen to be more tolerant of the negative effects of tall fescue than the average of their purebred contemporaries.  相似文献

Angus (A), Brown Swiss (S) and A X S reciprocal F1 (AS) dams were mated to A, S and AS (also reciprocal F1) sires resulting in nine breed groups of progeny with varying proportions of Angus and Brown Swiss breeding. Breed group of dam and of sire significantly influenced birth weight, preweaning daily gain, weaning weight, 205-d weight, condition score and frame size. The means for birth weight and weaning weight were 33 and 213 kg, respectively. Brown Swiss bulls sired calves with the heaviest birth and weaning weights. Calves produced by S dams likewise were heavier at birth and weaning. Pregnancy rates were influenced significantly by year, age and breed of dam and averaged 79, 95 and 92% for S, AS and A cows, respectively. Survival rate averaged 97% and was not influenced significantly by any of the effects examined. Because survival rates were similar for all breed groups, the results for weaning rate paralleled those for pregnancy rate. Genetic influences on preweaning growth traits and survival rate were partitioned into additive breed differences (B) and heterosis (H) effects for direct (d) and maternal (m) components. Pregnancy and weaning rates were examined using similar analyses except that genotype of service sire of dam replaced that of the offspring for the direct additive breed and direct heterosis components. The Bd values indicated that the Angus breed was inferior (P less than .01) to the Brown Swiss breed for all preweaning growth traits except for condition score, in which the Angus breed surpassed (P less than .01) the Brown Swiss. The Bm values also showed an advantage for the Brown Swiss breed for all preweaning growth traits. The additive maternal effect (the genotype of the females exposed), Bm, was important for pregnancy rate and weaning rate (P less than .001 and P less than .05) but not for survival rate (P greater than .10). The direct additive breed effect was not important for any reproductive trait. Direct heterosis did not affect any of the preweaning or reproduction traits; however, maternal heterosis (Hm) significantly affected all traits except birth weight, frame score and survival rate. The Hm estimates were 12.0 and 8.4 kg for weaning weight and 205-d weight, respectively. The Hm estimates for pregnancy rate, survival rate and weaning rate were 10, 2 and 13%, respectively.  相似文献

From 1979 through 1987, British breed and crossbred cows were mated to Simmental, Pinzgauer or Tarentaise bulls or to Hereford-Angus crossbred bulls. Beginning in 1982, continental European crossbred females also entered the herd, to be mated for first calving to Hereford-Angus or Angus bulls and as cows to continental European or Hereford-Angus bulls. In progeny of British breed and crossbred cows, dam breed effects on birth and weaning weight were not important, but continental European crossbred calves were heavier than British crossbred contemporaries at birth and weaning. Pinzgauer- and Simmental-sired calves were heavier at birth than Tarentaise crosses, but calves sired by each of the continental breeds had similar weaning weights. Maternal heterosis was greater than direct heterosis effects on weaning weight (8% vs 5%), but only direct heterosis (13%) influenced birth weight. Within progeny of continental European crossbred cows, calves with a Tarentaise maternal grandsire were lighter at birth, with no significant difference among other maternal grandsire breeds. Maternal breed effects on weaning weight were not significant. Nevertheless, in contemporary years, continental European crossbred cows reared calves that were 10% heavier than calves reared by British crossbred cows. Pacific Northwestern cattle producers could achieve substantial increases in weaning weight from introducing inheritance from continental European dual-purpose breeds into cow herds and calf crops of British ancestry.  相似文献

Data on 2,034 F1 calves sired by Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Gelbvieh, and Tarentaise bulls with Hereford or Angus dams and data on 3,686 three-breed-cross calves with 700 F1 dams of the same breed crosses were used for this study. Traits analyzed were birth, weaning, yearling, and 420-d weights (BWT, WW, YW, and W420, respectively) of F1 calves and WW of three-breed-cross calves. Expected progeny differences from national cattle evaluation programs for sires of F1 calves and cows for BWT, WW, YW, and net maternal ability (milk) were used to assess their value in prediction of crossbred performance. Regressions of actual F1 calf performance on sire EPD were positive for BWT (1.09 +/- .12 kg/kg of BWT EPD), WW (.79 +/- .14 kg/kg of WW EPD), YW (1.44 +/- .16 kg/kg of YW EPD), and W420 (1.66 kg/kg of YW EPD). These regression coefficients were similar to the expected value of 1.0 for BWT and WW but were larger than expected for YW and W420. Regressions of actual three-breed-cross calf WW on milk and WW EPD of their maternal grandsires were .95 +/- .14 and .42 +/- .10 kg/kg, respectively, and differed little from their expectations of 1.0 and .5, respectively. Heifer and steer progeny of 2-yr-old first-cross (F1) heifers and 3- to 6-yr-old F1 cows, from Hereford dams and five sire breeds, were evaluated for postweaning feedlot growth and carcass composition. Breeds of sire of dam were Angus (A), Red Poll (RP), Tarentaise (T), Simmental (Sm), and Pinzgauer (P). Calves from 2-yr-old heifers were sired by Shorthorn, and calves from 3- to 6-yr-old dams were sired by Charolais. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for total gain and final weight for female progeny from 2-yr-old dams. At all weights, Sm, P, and T ranked above A and RP. Progeny of A, P, Sm, and T F1 2-yr-old dams were not significantly different but were higher (P less than .05) than RP heifers in total feedlot gain. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05) for carcass weight and longissimus muscle area; T ranked highest and RP lowest. Breed was not significant for any growth traits of steer progeny of 2-yr-old dams. Breed was significant for marbling score; A ranked highest and exceeded (P less than .01) both RP and Sm steers. Breed was significant (P less than .05) for most growth traits in the heifer progeny of the 3- to 6-yr-old dams bred to Charolais sires. Heifer calves of the Sm group were heavier (P less than .05) than all other groups for most weights and total gain. For total gain, P and T were intermediate and A and RP lowest. For heifer carcass traits from 3- to 6-yr-old dams, breed was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, percentage of cutability, and estimated kidney, heart, and pelvic fat. Heifers from Sm-sired dams were heavier (P less than .05) than those from all other groups but ranked second to heifers from P for percentage of cutability. Marbling scores of RP heifer carcasses ranked highest of all groups. Breed was not significant (P greater than .05) for any of the weights or gains in steer progeny of 3- to 6-yr-old dams; however, the Sm and P groups ranked above A and RP for all feedlot test weights.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Cows (n = 116) sired by Angus, Gray Brahman, Gir, Indu-Brazil, Nellore, and Red Brahman bulls and from Hereford dams were evaluated (when bred to the same breed of bull) for reproductive performance and cow weight and height and their calves (n = 1,161) were evaluated for birth and weaning weight in central Texas (temperate winters and subtropical summers). Cows were born from 1982 to 1985 and their calves were born from 1985 to 1999. Crossbred cows sired by Angus had a higher (P < 0.10) occurrence of calving difficulty than Gir, Indu-Brazil, Nellore, and Red Brahman crossbreds. Calves from Gir crossbreds had lighter (P < 0.10) birth weight (34.8 kg) than calves from Angus and Red Brahman crossbreds (39.4 and 37.2 kg). Calves from Angus crossbreds cows had lighter (P < 0.001) weaning weight (227.0 kg) than calves from Bos indicus crossbreds. Cows sired by Angus were lighter (P < 0.10) as mature cows (520.69 kg) than Gray Brahman, Indu-Brazil, and Red Brahman crossbreds (585.6, 571.9, and 577.6 kg, respectively). They also had smaller (P < 0.05) hip height (124.7 cm) than Bos indicus crossbreds. Mature cows sired by Indu-Brazil had greater (P < 0.05) hip height (138.3 cm) than Gir crossbreds (133.8 cm). Differences among sire breeds were noted within cow age categories (2 through 14 yr of age) for pregnancy rate, calf crop born, calf survival rate (as a trait of cow), and calf crop weaned. Angus and Indu-Brazil crossbred cows were lower (P < or = 0.10) than Gir and Nellore crossbreds for pregnancy rate, calf crop born, and(or) calf crop weaned at some, but not all, ages. Indu-Brazil crossbreds had a lower (P < or = 0.10) calf survival rate than most other breed groups at ages 11 to 14 yr. The results of this study indicate that Nellore and Gir crossbreds, but not Indu-Brazil, could perform as well or better than breeds traditionally used in cross-breeding programs of U.S. cow-calf production.  相似文献

Angus (A), Santa Gertrudis (S), and Gelbvieh (G) sires were mated to A and S dams to produce five mating types (A X A, S X S, S X A, A X S and G X A) in each of four calf crops. The study involved 501 matings. Overall means for the traits measured (calves born/cows exposed, Julian birthdate, calving ease, percentage of live calves at 24 h, birth weight, survival to weaning and gestation length) were 74.2%, 48.8 d, 96.4%, 33.2 kg, 95.4% and 283.8 d, respectively. Angus dams had a 14 percentage point (P less than .05) advantage over S dams for percentage of calves born/cows exposed. The effect of heterosis in crosses of A and S for percentage of calves born/cows exposed was negative (-11.1%) and approached significance. The percentage of calves born/cows exposed were 84.4, 70.4, 76.1 and 62.3 for the A X A, S X S, S X A and A X S mating types, respectively. Matings involving A sires and dams produced calves significantly earlier in the calving season than did matings involving S sires and dams. Matings involving S sires and dams produced calves with significantly longer gestation periods than matings of A sires and dams. Calving ease score and survival to weaning were not affected by breed of sire, breed of dam, age of dam, sex of calf, or the interaction of breed of sire X breed of dam. Beef cows, bred to calve in the spring, were housed indoors over the winter. On May 25, 48 of the cows, and their calves, were put out to pasture while the other 24 cows and calves remained confined.Plasma iron concentrations in the pasture cows were higher (P<0.01) than the levels of the barn cows for several weeks after turn-out, but in September there was no difference (P>0.05). In contrast, the pasture calves showed significantly lower (P<0.01) levels than did the barn calves during the first two weeks, however, there was no difference (P>0.05) in September. No difference in plasma iron levels between male and female calves was found.  相似文献
