This study was conducted in South Wollo Zone of Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia, to assess the milk yield and reproductive performance of indigenous and crossbred cattle under smallholder management conditions. Questionnaire survey was used to collect retrospective data on the performance of dairy cattle in 186 households. Thirty two postpartum cows (16 indigenous and 16 crossbred) were selected purposively and monitored for five months and milk samples were collected twice per week from each cow to determine postpartum ovarian activity using ELISA techniques. Daily milk yields at all stages of lactation were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in crossbred than indigenous cows. Crossbred cows had significantly (P < 0.01) longer lactation length and shorter age at first calving, while calving interval was significantly shorter in cows that gave previous calves during the wet season than the dry season. Only six cows (18.8%) showed heat signs on an average of 136 days postpartum of which one was a crossbred and five were indigenous. While, 11 cows (34.3%) resumed ovarian activity until 150th day postpartum among which three were crossbred and eight were indigenous.  相似文献

Practical aspects of the fertility of dairy cattle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To establish sustainability in the dairy industry, it is important that cows become pregnant at a biologically optimal time and at an economically profitable interval after calving. In this review, the results obtained from Holstein cattle in an experimental herd for dairy research are summarized. First, the effect of age at first calving of heifers on productive and reproductive performance was examined. A reduction in calving age from 25.1 to 21.5 months with the same growth rate during the first 12 months after birth had no negative effects on the heifers' performance. Second, the postpartum follicular dynamics of lactating cows were traced in relation to their fertility, and the emergence and fate of cystic ovarian follicles were examined. The premature initiation of ovarian activity does not always improve the fertility of cows as indicated by the number of days open. Third, the occurrences of anestrous ovulation during the early postpartum period were analyzed with reference to the frequency of reversion to anestrus. The premature onset of estrous activity also did not improve fertility, and relapse back into anestrus after the onset of the estrous cycle often occurred during the breeding period. Fourth, some indices for the occurrence of postpartum reproductive events were evaluated as an indicator of the reproductive performance of lactating cows. The milk yield and percentage of body weight loss could be indicators for reproductive events. Finally, the potency of a pedometry system for the detection of typical and atypical estrous behaviors of heifers and lactating cows was evaluated in terms of efficiency and accuracy. The location of the pedometers and housing conditions for the animals affected the estrus detection of the system. These results represent the reproductive potential of modern high-yielding dairy cattle and provide a baseline to evaluate their reproduction.  相似文献

Social cues, often in the form of priming pheromones, can retard or enhance the rate of sexual development in a variety of mammals. The complex interactions between the social environment and reproduction have been explored most thoroughly in the house mouse. A urinary pheromone produced by females in a group inhibits sexual development, and a urinary pheromone from adult males accelerates onset of puberty in juvenile females. These priming pheromones apparently are detected by the vomeronasal organ and induce the changes in ovarian function via changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary system. Accelerated onset of puberty is not accompanied by deficits in reproductive performance. Puberty acceleration can have important management implications for domestic farm animals. It already is proving useful for manipulation in rearing swine and in synchronizing seasonal reproductive recrudescence in sheep. In cattle, the results are less clear that signals from the bull can hasten onset of puberty in heifers. The effect may be operable only under certain nutritional or other interacting conditions. Presumably, the postpartum anestrus period in the cow can be shortened by stimulation from the bull, although pheromones have not been implicated in this effect.  相似文献

Postpartum infertility is caused by four factors: general infertility, lack of uterine involution, short estrous cycles and anestrus. The general infertility component is common to any estrous cycle and reduces potential fertility by 20 to 30%. Incomplete uterine involution prevents fertilization during the first 20 d after calving but is not related to anestrus. Short estrous cycles prevent fertility during the first 40 d after calving by causing the cow to return to estrus before pregnancy recognition occurs. Anestrus is the major component of postpartum infertility and is affected by several minor factors: season, breed, parity, dystocia, presence of a bull, uterine palpation and carryover effects from the previous pregnancy as well as two major factors: suckling and nutrition. These major factors have direct effects on anestrus but also interact with one or more other factors to control postpartum anestrus. Physiological mechanisms associated with anestrus involve blockage of the GnRH "pulse generator" in the hypothalamus, but other pathways also must be involved because bypassing the pulse generator is not an effective treatment for all cows. The primary cause of anestrus probably is different for different stages of anestrus. The mediating mechanisms for anestrus are not involved with prolactin, oxytocin, the adrenal or direct neural input from the mammary gland but are at least partially involved with blood glucose and the endogenous opioid peptide system. Management options to decrease the impact of anestrus and infertility include: 1) restrict breeding season to less than or equal to 45 d; 2) manage nutrition so body condition score is 5 to 7 before calving; 3) minimize effects of dystocia and stimulate estrous activity with a sterile bull and estrous synchronization; and 4) judicious use of complete, partial or short-term weaning.  相似文献

Studies were conducted in Korean native cattle to determine the age and body weight at puberty, and to determine the postpartum anestrus intervals based on plasma progesterone profiles, rectal palpation, ultrasonography and estrus observation. Korean native cattle reached puberty at 344 days of age and at 188 kg body weight as determined by plasma progesterone profiles, but estrous behavior was not detected until 3 months later, at a body weight of 215 kg. Prolonged postpartum anestrus occurred in 40% of smallholders cows, where animals were tethered and fed hay and rice straw, whereas its incidence was only 6.8% in a well managed herd that was grazed and housed. Plasma progesterone profiles were used to monitor ovarian activity postpartum in standard fed cows (n=44) and restricted fed cows (n=20). In standard fed cows 81.8% showed luteal activity by 50 days postpartum, compared to 55% in restricted fed cows. Approximately 40% of cows in both groups had shown observable estrous behavior by this time. This study indicates that one or more ovulations had occurred before pubertal heifers and postpartum cows showed overt estrous behavior. It was concluded that improved management and feeding practices should result in improved reproductive performance.  相似文献

The timing of the onset of puberty, duration of seasonal ovulatory activity, and length of postpartum anestrus were studied by means of blood plasma progesterone concentrations in a flock of European female mouflons (Ovis gmelini musimon) maintained in captivity under natural photoperiod (40 degrees 25'N). Concentrations of progesterone in the peripheral blood were determined by radioimmunoassay in samples collected from the jugular vein twice a week. First ovulations in the breeding season were highly synchronized and occurred in mid-October. In contrast, the cessation of ovulatory cycles showed significant variation among females and extended from February to May, depending on age, with 2-yr-old animals exhibiting the longest anovulatory period (P < 0.01). When lambing occurred within the breeding season (February-April), 12 out of 26 animals had their first ovulation 25 +/- 1.8 days after parturition. The 14 late-lambing females had the first postpartum ovulation delayed until the next breeding season. March/April-born mouflon lambs that reached a minimum threshold body weight (23.8 +/- 0.6 kg) in their first breeding season reached puberty at 8 mo of age. In those with slower growth rates, however, the prepubertal period was extended throughout the first breeding and nonbreeding seasons, reaching puberty during the breeding season of the following year at 19 mo of age and 27 +/- 0.3 kg body weight. Further, attainment of puberty in ewe lambs born in June/July was also delayed until the breeding season of the following year, when animals had reached a threshold body weight at 17 mo of age.  相似文献

Age at puberty is a major determinant of lifetime reproductive efficiency of beef cows. Research conducted during the past 20 yr has documented the major endocrine events leading to first ovulation in heifers. The critical event seems to be a prepubertal increase in pulsatile LH secretion. Environment influences timing of puberty onset in beef heifers. Nutrition and season are two of the better-defined variables that have been studied. Age at puberty is related inversely to plane of nutrition. The effect of nutrition on sexual maturation involves effects on timing of the prepubertal increase in LH secretion and seems to involve the LH pulse generating system located in the hypothalamus. The precise mechanism by which nutrition influences pulsatile LH secretion has not been elucidated, but signals reflecting metabolic status seem to be involved. Seasonal conditions of the early (birth to 6 mo of age) and late (6 to 12 mo of age) postnatal periods also influence timing of puberty onset in the heifer. Autumn-born heifers attain puberty at younger ages than do spring-born heifers, and exposure to spring-summer temperatures and photoperiods during the second 6 mo of life reduces age at puberty regardless of season of birth. Photoperiod may be the major seasonal cue that influences puberty onset in cattle. Limited evidence suggests that melatonin, a pineal hormone, is involved with transducing photic stimuli into neuroendocrine signals that influence LH secretion. If the physiological mechanisms mediating the effects of nutrition and season on timing of puberty onset are determined, then management strategies for reducing age at puberty can be enhanced.  相似文献

Oestrus and calving records of Anatolian buffaloes were analyzed to investigate influence of climatic conditions on oestrus occurrence and postpartum period. Oestrus records showed a seasonal pattern concentrated between July and September which is the warmest period of the year. Likewise, more than half (52.7%) of the total calvings occurred between May and August. Month of calving significantly influenced the length of calving to first oestrus interval and open period (P < 0.01). The average length of open period was significantly shorter in autumn and summer calvers compared to those calved in spring and winter (P < 0.05) during long days. The humidity rate was negatively correlated with both calving to first oestrus interval and open period (P < 0.05). In conclusion, exposure to high environmental temperatures around 20 degrees C exerted no suppressive influence on ovarian activity in Anatolian buffaloes. Although humidity rate (P < 0.05) and ambient temperature (P < 0.01) was found to be correlated with the duration of postpartum period, day length might be the main factor regulating reproductive biorhythm and postpartum events in Anatolian buffalo cows.  相似文献

Effects of fescue toxicosis on reproduction in livestock.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Fescue toxicosis in livestock is due to ingestion of endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum) -infected tall fescue. Understanding mechanisms responsible for decreased calving and growth rates, delayed onset of puberty, and impaired function of corpora lutea in heifers at puberty consuming endophyte-infected fescue is an emerging field in reproductive toxicology. The condition decreases overall productivity through a reduction in reproductive efficiency, reduced weight gains, and lowered milk production. Reproduction in cattle may be further compromised by winter coat retention, increased susceptibility to high environmental temperatures, and light intolerance. Endocrine effects in steers associated with infected tall fescue include reduced prolactin and melatonin secretions and altered neurotransmitter metabolism in the hypothalamus, the pituitary, and pineal glands. Ewes have decreased prolactin and lengthened intervals from introduction of the ram until conception. The endophyte induces prolonged gestation, thickened placentas, large, weak foals, dystocia, and agalactia in pregnant mares. Ergot peptide alkaloids, produced by the endophyte, are suggested as the primary cause of fescue toxicosis. These compounds reduce prolactin, increase body temperatures, and have powerful vasoconstrictive effects. Neurohormonal imbalances of prolactin and melatonin, with restricted blood flow to internal organs, may be the principal causes of aberrant reproduction, growth, and maturation in livestock consuming endophyte-infected tall fescue.  相似文献

Objectives of this study were to evaluate effects of seven sire breed groups and three levels of daily ME intake (DMEI = 132 or 189 kcal ME/kg BW(0.75) or ad libitum), beginning 5 mo prepartum, on BCS, length of postpartum anestrus, and circulating concentrations of IGF-1 and GH in F1 cows (six to eight cows per sire breed in each DMEI group) out of Angus or Hereford dams. At the initiation of the study, BW were 522, 530, 548, 572, 575, 577, and 595 kg for cows sired by Longhorn, Galloway, 1960s Hereford or Angus, 1980s Hereford or Angus, or Nellore, Salers, and Shorthorn bulls, respectively (SE = 13; P < 0.001 for sire breed). After 4 mo on DMEI treatment during the pre-partum period, cows fed 132 kcal of ME/kg BW(0.75)gained little to no BW; cows fed 189 kcal ME/kg BW(0.75) gained 50 kg; and cows fed ad libitum gained 70 kg (all groups differ P < 0.05). Concentrations of progesterone in weekly blood samples collected 2 to 14 wk after calving were used to establish when normal luteal function resumed to predict length of postpartum anestrus. Length of anestrus was affected by level of DMEI in cows sired by Galloway, Longhorn, and Nellore bulls, but not other breeds (P < 0.02 for interaction of sire breed and DMEI). Level of DMEI, but not sire breed, affected (P < 0.01) BCS at wk 2 postpartum. Concentrations of IGF-1 at wk 2 postpartum differed (P < 0.001) due to sire breed, and changes in concentrations of IGF-1 from wk 2 to 14 were influenced (P < 0.03) by the interaction of sire breed and level of DMEI; which was primarily the result of differences in rate of decrease over time among different sire breed x level of DMEI groupings. Concentrations of GH did not differ due to sire breed but varied (P < 0.001) due to the interaction of DMEI and week postpartum, for which concentrations of GH did not differ at wk 2 but increased over time at rates that were inversely proportional to level of DMEI. Length of anestrus was negatively associated (P < 0.05) with day of calving, BCS, and BW. When effects of sire breed and level of DMEI were accounted for (residual correlation), length of anestrus was inversely associated (P < 0.01) with IGF-1 concentrations. Breed of sire influenced length of postpartum anestrus and energy balance, as predicted by IGF-1, in crossbred cows fed varying levels of DMEI.  相似文献

Internationally, reproductive performance of dairy cattle is declining. Under the low production, pasture-based and seasonal calving system used in New Zealand, reproductive performance is also declining, but remains higher than for many other industries. The seasonal calving system requires a high level of reproductive performance to ensure a 365 day inter-calving interval. About 80% of cows are detected in oestrus and inseminated in the first 3 weeks of the seasonal breeding programme and have a conception rate of 55% to 65% to this first insemination. This results in approximately 75% and approximately 90% of cows being pregnant by 6 weeks and by the end of the breeding programme, respectively. However, reproductive performance is declining due to multiple factors including increasing herd size, reduced oestrus detection sensitivity and specificity, declining body condition score at calving and increased rate of body condition score loss postpartum. Continuing selection for increased milk production is also having negative effects on reproduction. The mechanisms by which high production and negative energy balance are reducing reproductive performance are becoming better understood. However, practical solutions for the problem are challenging for veterinarians and consultants, especially given the consumer preference for less interventions.  相似文献

The genetics of reproduction is poorly understood because the heritabilities of traits currently recorded are low. To elucidate the genetics underlying reproduction in beef cattle, we performed a genome-wide association study using the bovine SNP50 chip in 2 tropically adapted beef cattle breeds, Brahman and Tropical Composite. Here we present the results for 3 female reproduction traits: 1) age at puberty, defined as age in days at first observed corpus luteum (CL) after frequent ovarian ultrasound scans (AGECL); 2) the postpartum anestrous interval, measured as the number of days from calving to first ovulation postpartum (first rebreeding interval, PPAI); and 3) the occurrence of the first postpartum ovulation before weaning in the first rebreeding period (PW), defined from PPAI. In addition, correlated traits such as BW, height, serum IGF1 concentration, condition score, and fatness were also examined. In the Brahman and Tropical Composite cattle, 169 [false positive rate (FPR) = 0.262] and 84 (FPR = 0.581) SNP, respectively, were significant (P < 0.001) for AGECL. In Brahman, 41% of these significant markers mapped to a single chromosomal region on BTA14. In Tropical Composites, 16% of these significant markers were located on BTA5. For PPAI, 66 (FPR = 0.67) and 113 (FPR = 0.432) SNP were significant (P < 0.001) in Brahman and Tropical Composite, respectively, whereas for PW, 68 (FPR = 0.64) and 113 (FPR = 0.432) SNP were significant (P < 0.01). In Tropical Composites, the largest concentration of PPAI markers were located on BTA5 [19% (PPAI) and 23% (PW)], and BTA16 [17% (PPAI) and 18% (PW)]. In Brahman cattle, the largest concentration of markers for postpartum anestrus was located on BTA3 (14% for PPAI and PW) and BTA14 (17% PPAI). Very few of the significant markers for female reproduction traits for the Brahman and Tropical Composite breeds were located in the same chromosomal regions. However, fatness and BW traits as well as serum IGF1 concentration were found to be associated with similar genome regions within and between breeds. Clusters of SNP associated with multiple traits were located on BTA14 in Brahman and BTA5 in Tropical Composites.  相似文献

Reproductive efficiency is the primary factor affecting productivity in female buffalo, but is greatly hampered by late attainment of puberty, seasonality of calving, long postpartum anoestrus and subsequent calving interval. Moreover, artificial insemination (AI) is seldom performed because of the weakness of oestrus symptoms and the variability of oestrus length, which makes oestrus detection very difficult.Researchers have tried to cope with each of the critical physiological aspects of buffalo reproductive performance mentioned above. In the present review, the main factors affecting the low reproductive efficiency in buffalo are examined and proposals made for its improvement, taking into account both our research work and literature results. Previous research on the changes in hormone profile during the oestrus cycle and in follicle development were used to develop models for improving reproductive efficiency. Hormonal treatments can be used: (1) to anticipate puberty in order to reduce the age at first calving; (2) to improve fertility in the low breeding season; and (3) to increase the effectiveness of AI programmes by overcoming the difficulty in oestrus detection.  相似文献

The literature indicates that sire breed of calf influences beef calf performance. However, there is little information concerning sire breed of calf effects on reproduction in beef cows. In this experiment, Angus (A), Brahman (B), or Tuli (T) bulls were bred to 136 Brahman (B) cows to examine sire breed of calf influence on peripartum hormone profiles and the length of postpartum anestrus. Cows were bled from 7 d prepartum to 28 d postpartum to determine peripartum hormone concentrations. Cows carrying AB calves had greater (P < 0.05) prepartum estradiol-17β concentrations than did cows carrying BB and TB calves. Prepartum and postpartum progesterone concentrations did not differ between cows with AB, BB, and TB calves. Cows with TB calves had lower (P < 0.01) 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 (PGFM) concentrations than did cows with AB and BB calves during the early postpartum period. Adjusting for birth weight removed the sire breed of calf effect on postpartum PGFM concentrations, but not prepartum estradiol-17β. Postpartum anestrus was shorter (P < 0.05) for cows nursing BB calves (84 ± 6 d) than for cows nursing AB (101 ± 6 d) or TB calves (110 ± 7 d). Adjustment for estradiol or PGFM concentrations did not reduce sire breed of calf effects on the length of postpartum anestrus. Further work is needed to determine how calf genotype may modulate the postpartum reproductive function of the dam.  相似文献

The changes in the acid-base indices of the blood of dairy cows in different stages of reproduction cycle were studied in relation to the composition of feed ration in the autumn, winter, spring and summer feeding seasons. The cows were in the following stages of their reproduction cycle: Group I the fourth to sixth month of gravidity, II eighth to ninth month of gravidity, III one to two months after calving. The seasonal composition of feed ration was demonstrated to exert a significant influence on the acid-base balance of the blood of cows in the studied stages of reproduction. A considerable occurrence of metabolic acidoses with different levels of compensation was observed when the cows were given the autumn and winter feed rations. Subclinical acid-base disorders of different directions (metabolic and respiratory alkaloses, acidoses) frequently occurred in the green feeding season. The frequency of acid-base disorders as a result of incorrect nutrition was found to be the highest in highly pregnant cows (group II) and in those one to two months after parturition (group III), i. e. in the periods with a significant influence on the reproduction process. On the whole, the best situation as to the acid-base balance was found in cows in the fourth to sixth month of their gravidity, irrespective of the seasonal effect of feed ration.  相似文献

There is limited genetic information relating calving difficulty and body weights to other productive and reproductive traits. Such information is useful for specifying selection criteria and for predicting economic consequences of selection. Genetic, maternal, and environmental covariances of six productive and reproductive measurements with calving difficulty, birth weight, 200-d weight, and 168-d postweaning gain were estimated in 12 experimental populations of cattle. Calf (direct) genetic effects resulting in longer gestation length were associated with increased calving difficulty and birth weight. Maternal genetic effects of increased gestation length and heavier birth weight were significantly associated. Lighter birth weight and reduced calving difficulty were associated with earlier heifer age at puberty. Increases in direct genetic effects of calving difficulty, 200-d weight, and postweaning gain were associated with a small increase in direct effect of scrotal circumference. Increased direct genetic effects of scrotal circumference were correlated with maternal effects decreasing calving difficulty and increasing 200-d weight. Direct effects of the skeletal measurements, yearling hip height, and heifer pelvic area were positively correlated with direct effects of calving difficulty, birth weight, 200-d weight, and postweaning gain, positively correlated with maternal effects for birth weight and 200-d weight, and negatively correlated with maternal calving difficulty. Percentage of retail product was positively associated with calving difficulty and negatively associated with 168-d gain. Predicted genetic change in calving difficulty resulting from one standard deviation of selection for either calving difficulty score or birth weight was much larger than for any other traits. Selection for 200-d weight, 168-d postweaning gain, hip height, pelvic area, or scrotal circumference was predicted to have opposite effects on direct and maternal calving difficulty. Estimated genetic correlations indicate some small to moderate relationships between calving difficulty and the measured productive and reproductive traits. However, selection for reduced calving difficulty should be based on calving difficulty score and(or) birth weight because of their superiority in predicted genetic change.  相似文献

Reproductive traits and calving weight were assessed in Saudi camels, and non-genetic factors influencing them were studied using data collected at Al Jouf centre from 1987 to 2009. Age at first conception, age at first calving, open period, calving interval, gestation length and weight at calving of camels averaged 42.3 months, 54.8 months, 10.6 months, 22.6 months, 377.5 days and 591.9 kg, respectively. A mixed model including the camel as a random effect was used to assess the effect of environmental effects on the traits studied. Age at first conception and age at first calving were affected by camel’s birth year. Open period and calving interval were not affected by parity or year of calving. However, camels that calved from October to February had a calving interval of 2.5 months higher than those that calved from March to September. Gestation length was affected by season and year of calving but not by parity or sex of calf. Camels calving from March to September had a gestation length 6.6 days shorter than those calving from October to February. Weight at calving was affected by parity and year of calving but not by season of calving. It was concluded that an improvement in camel reproductive traits is possible both through improving management systems and utilisation of controlled breeding techniques.  相似文献

This study aimed to characterize the annual reproductive cycle of Santa Inês sheep in the Fluminense lowland region (latitude 22° 27′ 45″ south, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) between September 2011 and August 2012. Ten ewes were maintained in a semi-intensive system under natural photoperiods with access to pasture and shelter. Blood samples were collected every 2 weeks to determine plasma progesterone concentrations. The body condition score (BCS) was determined each month. There was no seasonal variation in the plasma progesterone concentration from the months of September to January, April, and May to August. In the months of February and April, the plasma hormone levels were higher than August to November. Seventy percent (7/10) of the sheep studied had short seasonal anestrus. The periods of anestrus were concentrated between the months of September and December (spring season) in 85.7 % (6/7) of the cases evaluated. In these cases, 57.1 % (4/7) also had short periods of reproductive inactivity during other months of the year. The progesterone values obtained in the spring corroborate the higher reproductive anestrus observed in this season. Higher plasma progesterone values were found in summer and autumn with reduction in the winter to lower values in the spring. No changes in the BCS during the study period were observed. Under the studied conditions, the Santa Inês sheep showed a low degree of reproductive seasonality. However, some individual ewes had seasonal anestrus during the spring. Further studies that include management techniques are needed to improve reproductive efficiency without hormone therapy in this breed under tropical conditions.  相似文献
