Two accelerated lambing systems, Morlam using Morlam sheep (USDA, Beltsville 1966 to 1975) and Camal using Dorset ewes (Cornell 1978 to 1981), were evaluated for first lambing ages, interlambing intervals and conception probabilities. Morlam ewes were continuously exposed to rams over the year, while Camal Dorset ewes were exposed every other month. Morlam lambs were mated as early as 367 d of age and Camal Dorset lambs as early as 340 d. Early lambing was associated with higher rates of perinatal mortality (P greater than .05) and smaller litter size (P less than .01). Lambing years among Morlam ewes and season of birth of Camal Dorset ewes influenced (P less than .01) their first lambing ages. Lambing intervals averaged 293 and 303 d among Morlam and Camal Dorset ewes, respectively. Age at first lambing and season in which the previous lambing occurred with influential factors (P less than .01) on lambing intervals of Morlam ewes; longer intervals resulted when ewe lambs were mated at early ages (less than 12 mo), and when the previous lambing occurred in winter. Estimates of conditional probabilities of conception by month given the occurrence of estrus, reflected seasonal changes in both systems. The overall probability of conception for the Morlam system (P = .16) was relatively higher than that for the Camal Dorset system (P = .14); numbers of lambings per ewe per yr were 1.28 and 1.21, respectively. Estimates of heritability for age at first lambing, lambing interval and conception probability were .31, .06 and .30, respectively.

Two sets of data with a sum of 6318 lactations for 1391 Spanish Churra ewes, belonging to 10 flocks were used to study phenotypic, genetic and system efficiency parameters of lifetime traits in annual and accelerated lambing systems. The study included four life span traits, three productive traits and two reproductive traits. Trait averages for both milk yield and revenues from sold milk and weaned lambs were calculated per-day of lifetime, productive life and useful life. The animal model included flock and ewe birth year as fixed effects. Both effects contributed significantly to variation in most traits in the annual system while birth year was non-significant for most variables of the accelerated system. Milk production level was included in the model to analyze life span traits. It contributed significantly to variation in all life span traits in both systems. Means for productive and life span traits were significantly higher in the accelerated system compared with the annual system. The average interval between successive lambings was significantly shorter in the accelerated system, while age at first lambing was significantly lower in the annual system. Except for age at first lambing, heritability estimates were clearly lower in the case of the accelerated system (0.02 to 0.20) than in the annual system (0.08 to 0.45). Genetic correlations among traits were also lower in the case of the accelerated system. Failure to lamb three times in two consecutive years and the varying reproductive management among flocks in the accelerated system may be responsible for the differences in genetic results between the two systems. Improving reproductive performance is necessary, especially for the young high yielding ewes in the accelerated system. Management to ensure high fertility, especially among young ewes, would be of more importance than removing non-lambing ewes.

Intensive lamb fattening systems are evolving in developing Middle Eastern countries due to high demand for lambs at favorable
prices; however, little is known about their characteristics and constraints. A survey was conducted in Syria involving 241
farmers to characterize the fattening production systems and main constraints, with emphasis on feeding, management, labor,
and marketing. Most farmers (90%) considered the income from fattening to be from medium to high, and 57% expressed that lamb
fattening along with alternative income sources compose the family's livelihood strategies. Fattening systems offer employment
to family members. Market price was the main decision factor to buy and sell lambs, but this was only part of various marketing
aspects. Male lambs usually bought at markets at the mean age of 4 months (mean weight of 31 kg) are sold after fattening
at a 50–60 kg weight range. The average yearly fattening cycle was 2.7 batches, and the average number of lambs per batch
was 232. For 65% (n = 241) of the farmers the major constraint to fattening was feeding cost, and for about a half of farmers (51%, n = 241), disease outbreaks and prices for veterinarian services constituted the second important constraint. Research on least-cost
fattening diets and curbing disease problems to increase farmer's income margins is needed. It is expected that due to existing
commonalities, the information emerging from this study regarding major constraints to Awassi lamb fattening systems could
be useful for an across-synthesis on Awassi fattening production in the region.

The effect of water restriction in Awassi ewes was assessed under two physiological conditions: lactating and dry, over a 3-week-period (August–September, 2002). Eight dry and eight lactating Awassi ewes (with their lambs) were assigned to one of two watering regimes: watered once every three days and daily watering, respectively. Weather data, body weight and rectal temperature were recorded. Venous blood was sampled on the watering day of the water-restricted group, and subjected to haematological, biochemical and electrolytes analysis. Ewes under water restriction lost more weight and had higher packed cell volume, haemoglobin, serum cholesterol, urea, creatinine, total protein and albumin as compared to daily-watered animals. However, lactation seemed to have no significant effect on these serum components. As for blood pH and electrolytes, Na+ and Cl− were significantly higher under water restriction; whereas significantly lower K+ and Ca++ but higher pH and Cl− were observed in lactating animals. Finally, lower cortisol concentrations were observed in water-restricted animals, warranting further studies on the hormonal adaptation to long term water stress. It was concluded that water restriction induces similar changes in blood physiological indicators in dry and lactating Awassi ewes; while lactation beyond the first month post partum seems to mostly affect blood electrolytes.

Sheep producers throughout the United States have begun using accelerated lambing programs to enlarge their net income by increasing the number of lambs produced per ewe per year. These new intensive systems have produced some unique problems and concerns. This article attempts to educate the veterinarian as to the justification for these programs. Areas in which veterinary intervention can greatly influence the success or failure of these new accelerated lambing systems are identified. Selection of ewe type, ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis, ram evaluation, specific flock health concerns, and critical ewe nutrition are discussed.

Twenty nursing Awassi ewes (BW = 50 ± 2.35 kg, age = 4.5 ± 1.2 years) with their lambs were used to evaluate the effects of
feeding calcium salts in lactation diets on performance and pre-weaning growth of their lambs. Treatments were 0% calcium
salts (CON) or 5% calcium salts (FAT). At the end of the study, a digestibility experiment was performed. Milk yield was greater
(P < 0.05) for ewes fed the FAT diet than the CON diet. Milk composition was similar (P > 0.05) between diets. However, milk energy value (kcal/day) tended to be greater (P = 0.07) for the FAT diet than the CON diet. Concentrations of milk C18:1c9 and C20:0 were greater (P < 0.05) in ewes fed the FAT diet than the CON diet. However, concentration of trans-10, cis-12 CLA was lower (P = 0.05) in the FAT diet than in the CON diet. No differences in feed intake and body weight change were detected between
diets. Digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent
fiber were similar (P > 0.05) for diets. For lambs, weaning weight was not affected by treatments. However, average daily gain and total gain were
greater (P = 0.053) for the FAT diet than the CON diet. Results suggest that supplementing lactating ewes with calcium salts at the
beginning of lactation phase improves daily milk yield of ewes and pre-weaning growth of their lambs with no major negative
impact on feed intake and digestibility.

The induction and management of lambing was studied in a commercial flock of ewes. These ewes were bred at synchronized estrus and managed to lamb three times in 2 yr, with lambings occurring in the sequence of February, September and June. Ewes treated with 2 mg of estradiol benzoate in oil (i.m.) at approximately 17 d prior to term did not lamb in response to treatment. When 2 mg estradiol benzoate was given at 0800 on d 142 of gestation, lambing occurred an average of 37 +/- 5 h later in ewes treated in June or September and at 70 +/- 10 h later in ewes treated in February. The comparable figures for oil-treated ewes (control) were 70 +/- 5 h and 116 +/- 9 h, respectively. Altering the time of day of injection or using two injections 24 h apart did not alter the time for injection to lambing. Increasing the dose of estradiol benzoate to 15 mg decreased the time from injection to lambing (43 +/- 7 h, ewes treated in February) but also increased the incidence of dystocia (50% incidence). The incidence of dystocia averaged 8% for all other treatments and controls. Death loss of lambs to 1 wk of age was 12% and was not affected by treatment. The length of the lambing period was reduced from 9.0 +/- 3.3 d in control ewes to 3.6 +/- 1.1 d in induced ewes. A single injection of 2 mg estradiol benzoate given at 0800 on d 142 of gestation or a double treatment, with injections at 2000 on d 142 and 143, resulted in 53% of ewes lambing between 0800 and 1600 on each day of the lambing period, compared with 33% in control ewes.

A three-year longitudinal study was conducted to evaluate effects of strategic anthelmintic treatment regimes on age at first lambing (AFL), weight at first lambing (WFL) and lambing interval (LI) of 356 communally grazed ewes and 675 lambs owned by 10 smallholder farmers in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The ewes were stratified by weight and randomly allocated to three treatment groups as untreated control (TG1), twice-dosed per year (TG2) for both nematodes and trematodes in mid-January and mid-June and four-time-dosed per year (TG3) in June for nematodes, in August–September for nematodes and adult Fasciola, in November–December and January–February for immature flukes. The fixed effect of anthelmintic treatments, parity, season and year of lambing on AFL and LI was evaluated. Mean ± standard error (SE) of lambing interval was 292 ± 3 days. Both anthelmintic treatments (TG2 and TG3) shortened (P < 0.01) LI by about 23 days compared to non-treated ewes (TG1). Season and year of lambing had a significant (P < 0.001) effect on LI. Mean ± SE of AFL and WFL was 598 ± 10 days and 17.2 ± 1.37 kg, respectively. Anthelmintic treatments and parity of dam of the ewe lamb did not affect AFL (P > 0.05). Birth and lambing seasons of the ewe lamb had significant (P < 0.05) effect on AFL. On the other hand, lambing season of the ewe had significant (P < 0.05) effect on WFL. Ewe lambs born in the long rains lambed more than 50 days earlier than the ewe lambs born in short rainy and dry seasons. Lambing occurred year-round with two peaks in August–September and December–January, each 5 months after the two rainy seasons. Anthelmintic treatment at the beginning of the two rainy seasons should improve reproductive performance of Menz ewe lambs in similar agro-ecology in the central highlands of Ethiopia.

The effect of tilmicosin on the incidence of clinical mastitis and subsequent lamb performance was studied in 9 sheep flocks in Ontario. Ewes were treated randomly with either tilmicosin or placebo approximately one month prior to lambing. Outcome was assessed by comparing rates of clinical mastitis, palpable udder abnormalities, and preweaning (50-day) lamb weights between the 2 treatment groups, while controlling for other important variables. Lambs raised by multiparous ewes treated with tilmicosin were significantly heavier than lambs from placebo-treated multiparous ewes at 50 days. Lambs from tilmicosin-treated ewes were on average 0.52 kg heavier than lambs in the placebo group. There was no difference between treatment groups in the weight of lambs from first parity ewes. Tilmicosin treatment resulted in a 43% decrease in palpable udder abnormalities. Incidence of clinical mastitis did not differ between experimental groups. The administration of tilmicosin prelambing, at the time of routine clostridial disease vaccination, may be a beneficial and convenient way to reduce mastitis infection and improve the preweaning gain of lambs.

Summary Two groups of 45 Awassi ewes, were fed a control diet (group C) or a diet containing 0.30 poultry litter from laying birds (group PL). The experiment began when the rams were put with the ewes and continued through pregnancy and lactation. Mean weight changes of ewes of both groups were small and not significantly different. The numbers of ewes that lambed and the numbers of lambs weaned, as proportions of the number of ewes mated, were 0·91 and 0·73 respectively for group C, and 0·93 and 0·70 for group PL. The mean weaning weight of lambs of group C (20·6 kg) was just significantly greater than the value for group PL (18·4 kg) but the estimated mean daily milk yields, 0·716 and 0·626 kg respectively, did not differ significantly. Differences in breeding and lactation performance, between ewes given the control and those given the poultry litter diet, were small for all the data obtained. Also, there was no disease problem related to the use of poultry litter; and the food products milk and cheese, from ewes given poultry litter, were just as acceptable as those from ewes given the control diet.
Uso De Cama De Ponedoras En La Dieta De Ovejas Prenadas Y En Lactacion De La Raza Awassi
Emploi De La Litere De Volaille Dans La Ration Des Brebis Awassi Gestantes Et Allaitantes

The extent to which ewe reproduction could be improved by supplementary feeding around lambing time was investigated with four groups each of 16 ewes which were run continuously with fertile rams until they had lambed three times. One group was fed at a maintenance level throughout and the other three groups were given supplementary feed during the last four week of each pregnancy only, or during the last four weeks of pregnancy plus the first six weeks after each lambing, or during the last four weeks of pregnancy plus the first 12 weeks after each lambing. The average body weight of lambs weaned at 13 weeks of age increased (P less than 0.001) progressively from 6.0 to 9.1 kg with increasing duration of supplementary feeding. There were however no significant differences between treatment groups in mean interval between successive lambings (202 days), ovulation rate (2.26), litter size (1.58), lamb birth weight (1.8 kg), preweaning lamb mortality (37%) or number of lambs weaned per lambing (0.99).

Active immunization of sheep of the Dala breed against androstenedione caused a mean increase in number of lambs born (live-born and stillborn) of 0.29 (p less than 0.01). In yearlings the difference was 0.43 lambs (p less than 0.01) and in older ewes 0.23 lambs (p less than 0.1). Five of the older immunized ewes gave birth to quadruplets while none in the control group gave birth to more than 3 lambs. In older ewes there was an increase in the number of stillborn lambs. In young immunized ewes the mean ewe production, registered as total live weight of lambs in the autumn, was 11.3 kg higher than in control animals. This difference was however not significant (p less than 0.1).

A crossbreeding experiment was carried out to determine the sire breed effects on fattening performance of fat-tailed lambs.
Rams from four Iranian fat-tailed sheep breeds, namely Kurdi (K), Afshari (A), Chaal (C) and Sanjabi (S) were mated to Kurdi
ewes producing 454 progeny of four genotype groups (KK, AK, CK and SK). A total of 80 lambs comprising ten female and ten
male lambs from each genotype group were used in a fattening experiment during a period of 88 days. Genotype of the lamb had
significant effect on average dry matter intake (ADMI) (P < 0.05). SK lambs had the lowest ADMI. Average daily gain (ADG) and food conversion ratio (FCR) were not influenced by genotype
of the lamb. Sex of the lamb had significant effect on both ADG and FCR (P < 0.01). Slaughter weight (SLW), hot carcass weight (HCW), cold carcass weight (CCW) and daily carcass gain (DCG) were not
affected by lamb's genotype. However, genotype had significant effect on dressing percentage, carcass loss percentage (P < 0.01), carcass length (CL), leg circumference (LC), carcass compactness (CC) (P < 0.01) and carcass density (CD) (P < 0.05). Carcass width (CW) and leg length (LL) were not affected by lamb's genotype. Sex of the lamb had significant effects
on CL, CW, LC, CC, CD (P < 0.01) and LL (P < 0.05). The results indicated the existence of sire breed difference for daily dry matter intake and carcass conformation
in the fat-tailed sheep.
