Nursing sickness in mink is thought to be precipitated by inadequate salt intake, whether this is due to inadequate salt levels in the diet or inadequate total dietary intake. To test this hypothesis, lactating females raising large litters were given 2 daily intramuscular injections of the loop diuretic furosemide (Lasix, 4 + 4 mg/kg/day) for 2.5 d during the normal weaning period 6 wk after parturition or served as untreated controls. Following the same protocol, barren mink (i.e. unsuccessfully mated females) were treated similarly. Dams were carefully inspected for clinical signs of nursing sickness during and after the treatment. Urinary osmolality and concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, creatinine and carbamide (urea) were measured prior to treatment (day 1) and on day 3, immediately before and 4 h after the final diuretic treatment. Plasma concentrations of aldosterone and cortisol were determined by radioimmunassay 4 h after the last injection with furosemide on day 3. Biochemical changes in urine (a low osmolality, low concentrations of carbamide and creatinine, and extremely low sodium concentrations) and in plasma (aldosteronism) similar to those found in nursing sickness were elicited in the nursing dams. Nevertheless, none of the dams developed overt clinical signs of nursing sickness. It is concluded that the biochemical signs of volume and salt depletion associated with nursing sickness are sequelae rather than etiological factors of this disorder.  相似文献

Salt consumption and the effect of salt on mineral metabolism in horses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The voluntary salt consumption of mature unexercised horses was measured weekly for up to 45 weeks. Voluntary intake among horses was quite variable ranging from 19 to 143 g of salt per day and was inversely related to total salt intake (salt in feeds plus voluntary intake). Mean daily voluntary salt consumption was 53 g. Season of the year did not influence voluntary intake. In preference tests which evaluated every two choice combination of 0.2% and 4% NaCl in test diets fed daily for four days, ponies generally preferred diets containing the lower amount of salt. In similar preference studies which used NaHCO3 as a sodium source, ponies always preferred the diet containing the lower level of NaHCO3. Metabolism studies employing diets containing 1, 3 or 5% NaCl showed that urinary excretion was the major excretory pathway for sodium and chloride. Fecal excretion, intestinal absorption and retention of sodium were not affected by level of salt intake. Urinary calcium excretion was unaffected by salt intake but calcium and phosphorus absorption and retention were enhanced when ponies were fed diets containing 3 or 5% sodium chloride. Magnesium and copper metabolism were unaffected by salt intake. Horses voluntarily consume relatively large amounts of sodium chloride but it is likely that not all voluntary consumption is related to the salt requirement of the horse. Habit and taste preference could also be involved. Salt consumption at the levels used in these studies does not appear to be detrimental to the metabolism of other minerals in the horse.  相似文献

Several studies in human subjects have demonstrated greater diuresis with constant rate infusion (CRI) furosemide than intermittent bolus (IB) furosemide. This study was conducted to compare the diuretic efficacy of the same total dose of IB furosemide and CRI furosemide in 6 healthy, adult Greyhound dogs in a randomized crossover design with a 2-week washout period between treatments. For IB administration, dogs received 3 mg/kg at 0 and 4 hours. For CRI administration, dogs received a 0.66 mg/kg loading dose followed by 0.66 mg/kg/h over 8 hours. The same volume of fluid was administered for both methods. Urine output was quantified hourly. Urine electrolyte concentrations, urine specific gravity (USG), packed cell volume (PCV), total protein (TP), serum electrolyte concentrations, total carbon dioxide (TCO2), serum creatinine (sCr), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were determined every 2 hours. Urine production and water intake were greater (P < or = 0.05) for CRI than IB. Urine sodium and calcium losses were greater (P < 0.05) and urine potassium loss was less (P = 0.03) for CRI than IB, but there was no evidence of a difference between methods for urine magnesium and chloride losses. Serum chloride concentration was less (P < 0.001), sCr concentration greater (P = 0.04). TP greater (P = 0.01), and PCV greater (P = 0.003) for CRI than IB. No differences in USG, TCO2, BUN, or serum potassium, sodium, and magnesium concentrations were detected between methods. The same total dose of CRI furosemide resulted in more diuresis, natriuresis, and calciuresis and less kaliuresis than IB furosemide in these normal Greyhound dogs over 8 hours, suggesting that furosemide is a more effective diuretic when administered by CRI than by IB.  相似文献

Ingestion of small amounts of condensed tannin (CT) by ruminants may provide benefits including reduction of ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions by reducing urine urea excretion. However, providing grazing ruminants with sufficient amounts of CT-containing forages is difficult, and an alternative may be to provide CT in their drinking water. We conducted three trials to determine if urine urea levels in sheep and cattle decrease after they drink water containing CT. In two initial trials, blood serum urea was measured as a surrogate for urine urea when lambs or steers drank tap water containing low to higher amounts of quebracho tannin (QT). Serum urea concentration was measured after lambs drank the treatments for 7 d or steers for 4–6 d. Lambs consumed pellets (16% crude protein [CP] as fed) at 3.5% of body weight, and steers were fed cubes (15% CP as fed) at 3% of body weight. Mean serum urea concentration in sheep was reduced when they consumed water with QT (P = 0.03) and was also reduced for cattle (P < 0.001). In a third trial with a Latin-square design, four wethers were fed pellets (22% CP, DM basis) and given tap water or tap water with low, medium, or high amounts of QT, and their urine urea excretion was measured. There was a linear effect of QT intake on daily urine urea excretion as a percentage of nitrogen intake (P = 0.03). Reductions in daily urea excretion as a percentage of nitrogen intake were 3.5%, 6.6%, and 12.6%, respectively, for the low, medium, and high QT intake. Small amounts of QT in the drinking water of grazing ruminants can reduce their urine urea excretion.  相似文献

Thirty castrated male Moo Lath pigs (6–8 weeks of age) were used in a 15-week growth trial to study the effect of high dietary sodium chloride (NaCl) content on feed and water intake, performance, sodium (Na) and potassium (K) balance, and plasma aldosterone concentration. The pigs were randomly allocated (ten per treatment) to diets containing 0.24 % Na (Na0.24), 0.28 % Na (Na0.28), and 0.32 % Na (Na0.32) per kg diet. Feed and water was provided ad libitum, and water consumption, feed offered, and feed residues were recorded daily. Every third week, the pigs were weighed, blood samples were collected, and a 3-day total collection of urine and feces was performed. Water intake was higher (P?=?0.001) in pigs fed with diets Na0.28 (3.7 L/day) and Na0.32 (3.9 L/day) than in pigs fed with diet Na0.24 (3.4 L/day), and dry matter (DM) intake was higher on diet Na0.32 (P?=?0.041) than on the other diets. The average daily body weight (BW) gain was higher on diet Na0.32 than on the other diets (P?=?0.031). The feed conversion ratio (in kilogram feed DM to kilogram BW gain) was 4.6, 4.6, and 4.1 on treatments Na0.24, Na0.28, and Na0.32, respectively (P?=?0.14). The highest Na balance was observed on diet Na0.32 followed by diets Na0.28 and Na0.24 (P?<?0.001), while there was no treatment-related pattern for the K balance. The Na/K ratio in feces and urine increased (P?<?0.001), and the K/Na ratio in feces (P?<?0.001) decreased with increasing Na content in the diet. Plasma aldosterone concentration decreased (P?<?0.001) with increasing dietary content of Na. These results indicate that high NaCl intake and free access to water will increase Na balance but do not negatively influence feed intake and performance of growing local pigs.  相似文献

Furosemide is a diuretic agent used commonly in racehorses to attenuate the bleeding associated with exercise‐induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). The current study describes serum and urine concentrations and the pharmacokinetics of furosemide following administration at 4 and 24 hrs prior to maximal exercise. Eight exercised adult Thoroughbred horses received a single IV administration of 250 mg of furosemide at 4 and 24 hrs prior to maximal exercise on a high‐speed treadmill. Blood and urine samples were collected at time 0 and at various times for up to 72 hrs and furosemide concentrations determined using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Serum furosemide concentrations remained above the LOQ (0.05 ng/ml) for 36 hrs in 3/8 and 1/8 horses in the 4‐ and 24‐hrs groups, respectively. Serum concentration data were best fit by a two‐compartment model. There was not a significant difference in the volume of distribution at steady‐state (0.594 ± 0.178 [4 hrs] and 0.648 ± 0.147 [24 hrs] L/kg) or systemic clearance (0.541 ± 0.094 [4 hrs] and 0.617 ± 0.114 [24 hrs] L/hrs/kg) between horses that were exercised at 4‐ and 24 hrs postdrug administration. The mean ± SD elimination half‐life was 3.12 ± 0.387 and 3.23 ± 0.407 hrs following administration at 4 and 24 hrs prior to exercise, respectively.  相似文献

Introduction/ObjectivesUrine chemistry has received growing attention to estimate the diuretic response in dogs with cardiac disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of time elapsed between the oral furosemide administration and sample collection on urine chemistry in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) receiving diuretic therapy in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage C.Materials and methodsSeventy-three dogs with MMVD ACVIM stage C and 106 healthy dogs were prospectively included. Dogs with MMVD were divided, based on the time of sampling, in morning group (MMVD-MG) of one to 6 h and an evening group (MMVD-EG) over 6 h from oral furosemide administration. Analogously, healthy dogs sampled between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 2 and 7 p.m. were divided in a morning group (H-MG) and an evening group (H-EG), respectively. Urine chemistry, including fractional excretion of electrolytes, was evaluated and compared among groups.ResultsHigher excretion of sodium and chloride and higher urine sodium to urine potassium ratio (uNa+:uK+) were detected in MMVD-MG than MMVD-EG (P = 0.021, P = 0.038, and P = 0.016, respectively). Natriuresis, chloriuresis, and uNa+:uK+ were higher in MMVD-MG than H-MG, while no differences were found in the comparison between H-MG and H-EG and between MMVD-EG and H-EG.ConclusionsUrinary electrolyte excretion is significantly increased within 6 h from furosemide administration in MMVD ACVIM stage C dogs. Time of sampling from furosemide administration significantly affects urine chemistry in MMVD dogs and should be considered in clinical practice and the research field.  相似文献

The comprehension of strategies to increase urine production may be important, especially in kibble diets to prevent urolithiasis in cats. The effects of increasing amounts of crude protein (CP) and sodium on the water turnover of cats were evaluated using the water balance (WB) method and the deuterium dilution technique. The study followed a randomized block design, with three blocks of eight cats, two cats per food type in each block, and six cats per food. Four extruded diets with different amounts of CP and sodium were evaluated (on DM basis): 28% CP and 0.58% sodium; 39% CP and 0.64% sodium; 52% CP and 0.76% sodium; and 64% CP and 0.87% sodium. Cats were individually housed in cages for 8 days to measure WB, urea excretion, and faecal and urine characteristics. Deuterium oxide was used to evaluate water turnover, and during the period cats were housed in a collective cattery. The data were analysed by an F test, and the means were compared by polynomial contrasts. The ɑ level of significance was set at 0.05. The methods were compared by Pearson correlation, and Bland and Altman analysis. The increase in the CP content elevated linearly the renal excretion of urea (p < .001), and, together with the higher sodium intake, elevated the renal solute load, which resulted in a linear increase in urine production and water intake (p < .01). The urine density, metabolic water, and faecal and insensible water losses did not differ (p > .05). The water flux increased linearly when using the deuterium method (p < .001), but the obtained values were 20.85 ± 11.11 ml/cat/day higher than those verified using the WB method (p = .001). Higher CP and sodium amounts in dry diets increased the urine production and water consumption of cats, and this can be explored as a possible option to increase urination.  相似文献

ObjectivesDiuretic therapy reduces preload and relieves congestion secondary to cardiac dysfunction. Torsemide (torasemide) is a loop diuretic with longer duration of action, decreased susceptibility to diuretic resistance, and adjunctive aldosterone antagonist properties compared with furosemide. We hypothesized that torsemide would be well tolerated and no less effective than furosemide at diuresis, control of clinical signs, and maintenance of quality of life (QOL) in dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF).Animals, materials and methodsSeven client-owned dogs with stable CHF receiving twice daily oral furosemide and adjunctive medications. Utilizing a double-blinded, randomized, crossover design, dogs were administered either oral furosemide at their current dose or an equivalent oral dose of torsemide (1/10 of the daily furosemide dose divided into twice daily dosing) on day 0. Crossover occurred at day 7 and the study ended on day 14. Clinical, laboratory, radiographic, and QOL variables were evaluated on days 0, 7 and 14.ResultsNo dogs developed recurrent CHF during the study. Mean furosemide dose on day 0 was 5.13 mg/kg/day (range 2.8–9.6). Following torsemide treatment, creatinine (P = 0.020), urea nitrogen (P = 0.013), phosphorus (P = 0.032), albumin (P = 0.019), carbon dioxide (P = 0.015) and anion gap (P = 0.005) were significantly increased, and urine specific gravity (P = 0.004) and chloride (P = 0.021) were significantly decreased compared with furosemide dosing. No differences in QOL were found.ConclusionsResults indicate that torsemide is equivalent to furosemide at controlling clinical signs of CHF in dogs and is likely to achieve greater diuresis vs. furosemide. Larger clinical trials evaluating torsemide as a first or second-line loop diuretic for congestive heart failure in dogs are warranted.  相似文献

Hay stabilises urine pH in horses. It is unknown whether this is an effect of structure or of chemical composition. In this study, four ponies (230–384 kg body weight [BW]) were fed six different diets with either a structure or a composition similar to hay with and without acidifiers in a cross‐over experimental design in amounts to maintain body weight with the following main compounds: Fresh grass (GRASS), alfalfa hay (ALF), grass cobs (COBS), grass silage (SIL), straw (STR) or extruded straw (STRe) for 2 to 10 days. Urine pH was measured in all trials, blood pH, blood base excess and bicarbonate as well as mineral balance were determined in GRASS, ALF, STR and STRe. In the trials with straw and extruded straw, urine pH decreased significantly (STR control: 7.8 ± 0.23, acidifier: 5.2 ± 0.38) when acidifiers were added, whereas in all other diets that were based on fresh or preserved green fodder, pH did not decrease below 7. Blood pH was similarly affected by diet and acidifiers. Acidifiers had little effect on the pre‐prandial blood pH, only in diet STR there was a significant reduction in relation to control. Post‐prandial blood pH was significantly reduced by acidifiers in all diets. Blood bicarbonate and base excess showed corresponding effects. Faecal and renal mineral excretion and apparent mineral digestibility were not systematically affected by diet or acidifiers except for chloride. Chloride added as inorganic chloride salt had an even better apparent digestibility than chloride originating from feed. Because only green plant material stabilised acid base balance, chlorophyll and its metabolites are discussed as potential mediators of the effect of green fodder on acid base balance.  相似文献

Introduction

Diuretic failure is a potential life-ending event but is unpredictable and poorly understood. The objectives of this study were to evaluate pharmacodynamic markers of furosemide-induced diuresis and to investigate mechanisms of diuretic braking in dogs receiving constant rate infusion (CRI) of furosemide.

Animals

Six healthy male dogs.

Methods

Raw data and stored samples from one arm of a previously published study were further analyzed to mechanistically investigate causes of diuretic braking in these dogs. Urine volume was recorded hourly during a 5-h furosemide CRI. Urine and blood samples were collected hourly to measure serum and urine electrolytes, urine aldosterone, and plasma and urine furosemide. Serum electrolyte fractional excretion was calculated. Urine sodium concentration was indexed to urine potassium (uNa:uK) and urine furosemide (uNa:uFur) concentrations, plasma furosemide concentration was indexed to urine furosemide concentration (pFur:uFur), and urine aldosterone was indexed to urine creatinine (UAldo:C). Temporal change and the relationship to urine volume were evaluated for these measured and calculated variables.

Results

Urine volume was significantly correlated with urine electrolyte amounts and with uNa:uK. The ratio of pFur:uFur decreased during the infusion, whereas furosemide excretion was unchanged.

Conclusions

There was a strong relationship between urine volume and absolute urine electrolyte excretion. Urine volume was strongly correlated to uNa:uK, giving it potential as a spot indicator of urine production during diuresis. The decrease in uNa:uK over time during the infusion is consistent with mineralocorticoid modification of urinary electrolyte excretion, supporting renin–angiotensin–aldosterone activation as a cause of diuretic braking in this model.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of dietary salt intake on systolic blood pressure, water intake, urine output, and urine concentration in cats. Ten healthy young adult cats (mean age 2.5 years) were randomly divided into 2 groups and fed either a control diet (0.46% Na and 1.33% Cl on a dry matter [DM] basis) or a diet with a moderately increased salt content (1.02% Na and 2.02% Cl on a DM basis) for 2 weeks. After a 1-week wash-out period, each group was switched to the opposite diet for 2 weeks. During each 2-week study period, food and water intake, urine volume, urine specific gravity, and urine osmolality were measured daily. Systolic blood pressure (calculated as the mean of 5 readings measured with a Doppler flow detector) was assessed twice daily. No significant effect of diet composition was found on systolic blood pressure, and blood pressure measurements remained within reference limits throughout the study in all 10 cats. However, animals fed the higher salt diet had significantly increased water intake and urine osmolality, and significantly decreased urine specific gravity in comparison to animals fed the control diet. Examination of results of this preliminary study suggests that feeding a diet with moderately increased salt content increases water intake and causes diuresis without increasing systolic blood pressure in healthy adult young cats.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the effect of fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) on intrapulmonary shunt fraction as measured by F-shunt in ponies during isoflurane anaesthesia.Study designProspective, randomized clinical study.AnimalsA group of 23 adult Shetland ponies undergoing a total of 32 anaesthetic procedures.MethodsPonies were premedicated intravenously (IV) with detomidine (0.01 mg kg–1) and either morphine (0.1 mg kg–1) or butorphanol (0.02 mg kg–1). Anaesthesia was induced with ketamine (2.2 mg kg–1) and midazolam (0.07 mg kg–1) administered IV. Ponies were randomly allocated to maintenance of anaesthesia with isoflurane in oxygen (group TH; FiO2 = 0.95) or a mixture of oxygen and medical air (group TL; FiO2 = 0.65); all ponies were given a constant rate of infusion of detomidine. Animals were mechanically ventilated to maintain PaCO2 between 40 and 50 mmHg. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed every 30 minutes. The F-shunt equation was calculated for each time point T0, T30, T60 and T90. Data were analysed using linear mixed model analysis and presented as mean ± standard deviation (p < 0.05).ResultsPaO2 was greater in group TH than in group TL (TH: 406 ± 90, 438 ± 83, 441 ± 69 and 464 ± 53 mmHg versus TL: 202 ± 90, 186 ± 84, 172 ± 85 and 191 ± 98 mmHg at T0, T30, T60 and T90, respectively; p < 0.0001). In TH, F-shunt was < TL. Significant differences were found at T60 (TH: 13.2% ± 4.3 versus TL: 19.4% ± 8.3; p = 0.016) and T90 (TH: 11.7% ± 3.5 versus TL: 18.6% ± 9.5; p = 0.036).Conclusions and clinical relevanceOur findings do not support a beneficial effect of using a reduced FiO2 to improve oxygenation in anaesthetized and mechanically ventilated Shetland ponies.  相似文献

Two different herds of Iberian pigs have been studied in the montanera fattening period (from November first to end of December) in the dehesa agrosystem (clear forest of evergreen oaks, Quercus rotundifolia) during two different autumns and winters (2003 and 2004) without any supplementary feed. A direct in situ observation method has been used, with continuous observation of ingestive bites taken by continuously monitored pigs (10 uninterrupted hours, from 08:30 to 18:30) to calculate intake. 95 grazing days have been studied corresponding to different randomly chosen pigs. The obtained results show grass and acorns as the main resources with 56.5 and 43.3% of bites respectively. 14 other resources different from grass and acorns were registered, but only 9 resources (berries, bushes, inorganic rubbish, woods, roots, earth and sand, charcoal and ashes, carrion and straw) were consumed at a frequency ≥ 0.01%. The percentage distribution for daily bites showed no significant difference between years. However daily grazing times were significantly affected by year, and were associated with available drinking water from rain. Lack of water in second montanera forced pigs to return to shelters to drink and, in consequence, reduced daily mean grazing time (from 427 ± 14 min in montanera 1 to 368 ± 8 in montanera 2; P < 0.001) and kernel acorn dry matter intake (from 3.6 ± 0.3 kg in montanera 1 to 3.1 ± 0.1 in montanera 2; P < 0.05); however, it did not significantly influence either daily grass dry matter intake (0.38 ± 0.04 kg in montanera 1 versus 0.49 ± 0.04 kg in montanera 2) or total daily dry matter intake calculated from bite number (4.0 ± 0.3 kg in montanera 1 versus 3.6 ± 0.1 in montanera 2).  相似文献

It has been suggested that gluten may play a role in equine inflammatory small bowel disease (ISBD). Previous work showed an association between equine gluten-sensitive enteropathy and IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase (TGA) in serum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of IgA antibodies to TGA in a group of healthy non–gluten-free sport ponies and to present a case of tentative gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis in a horse. Blood samples were obtained from 40 healthy jumping ponies. The ponies comprised 12 mares, 8 stallions, and 20 geldings with an average age of 9.0 ± 3.8 years (±SD; range 3–19 years). Sera were tested for IgA antibodies against human recombinant TGA. Significance (P < .05) of the correlation between TGA titer and age in these ponies was assessed using Pearson test (two tailed). In addition, to further illustrate tentative equine gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis, the clinical course in an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood sport horse gelding has been described. The average TGA titer was 21.4 ± 13.6 AU/mL (range 2–65 AU/mL). There was a significant (P = .013) correlation (r = 0.389) between age and TGA titer in ponies. One of the 40 ponies (2.5%) showed an elevated TGA titer. An elevated TGA titer decreased after a gluten-free ration for 3 months in an 11-year-old Warmblood gelding with a tentative diagnosis of ISBD associated with full remission of the generalized skin reaction. To our best knowledge, this is the first study assessing TGA antibodies in sera from healthy non–gluten-free ponies and showing a correlation with age. The presented case could be the first one of a horse with a tentative diagnosis of gluten-sensitive enteropathy combined with dermatitis. Given the reported findings, this study warrants further investigations into gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis in individual horses affected with ISBD.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of feeding diet based on untreated (UT) or ensiled alkali‐treated (ET) barley straw with either urea or casein supplementation, on feed intake, digestibility, ruminal pH, water intake and faecal and urinary characteristics. Four sheep fitted with ruminal cannulas were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Barley straw was treated by the dry (spraying) method in pH adjusted of hydrogen peroxide (pH 11.5), ensiled for 6 weeks and included at 65% of the diet dry matter (DM). The results showed that straw pH reduced from 11.58 to 8.60 after 6 weeks of ensilage. The ET diet increased average DM digestibility and intake by 19% and 43% respectively. Total water intake was similar across treatments, while the water/DM intake ratio was 23% higher with the UT diet than with the ET one. Ruminal (6.73 vs. 6.84) and faecal (8.67 vs. 9.05) pH decreased but urinary pH (6.14 vs. 8.13) increased as a result of feeding animals on the ET diet compared with the UT diet. Compared with the UT diet, the ET one decreased faecal fibre (12%), moisture (32%) and water holding capacity, while it increased faecal ash (10%) and density (20%). The volume of urine excreted by the sheep fed with the ET diet increased by 67%, but their urine specific gravity (SG) decreased. No significant effects were observed for the dietary N supplementation and interactions between straw type × N supplementation with regard to any of the measured characteristics except for DM intake, which reduced due to the casein supplementation in the ET diet. These results indicate that the alkali treatment and ensilage of barley straw increased digestibility, intake, faecal consistency and urinary pH and dilution but decreased straw alkalinity as well as ruminal and faecal pH.  相似文献

To evaluate potential calming effects of alpha-casozepine on horses, we blindly compared behavior and training efficiency of adult semi-feral ponies treated with either alpha-casozepine or control supplement during transition to domestic management and handling. Six ponies (three matched pairs) aged 2 to 8 years that had been reared and kept since birth under semi-feral social and environmental conditions were given either alpha-casozepine (1000 mg orally once daily for ponies weighing 160 to 205 kg) or control supplement, beginning 5 days before being moved to a domestic facility for a 2-week introduction to stabling, haltering, leading, tethering, social separation, stall confinement, grooming, simulated girthing, lifting feet, health care treatments, and transportation. Objective quantitative behavior measures (latencies to complete tasks, avoidance responses, and nervous defecations) were derived from video-recorded handling sessions. For each of the 14 sessions, ponies were ranked 1 (best) to 6 (poorest) for calm, compliance, and acclimation/skill progress. All human–animal interactions, video analyses, and rankings were done blindly to supplement assignments. For most daily sessions across the 2-week training period, each of the three alpha-casozepine-treated ponies performed better than their matched control counterparts, and they also had the top three sums of daily session ranks, with a mean of 35.2 compared with 62.8 for control ponies (P < .05, dependent t-test). At 6 weeks after the 2-week training period, the alpha-casozepine-treated ponies retained the best three sum of ranks for the seven specific skills re-assessed at that time. These results provide evidence of the benefit of alpha-casozepine supplementation to horses undergoing potentially stressful situations inherent to domestic management.  相似文献

Background

Increasing salt intake to promote diuresis has been suggested in the management of feline lower urinary tract disease. However, high dietary salt intake might adversely affect blood pressure and renal function.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to assess the long‐term effects of increased salt intake on renal function in healthy aged cats.

Methods

This study was controlled, randomized, and blinded. Twenty healthy neutered cats (10.1 ± 2.4 years) were randomly allocated into 2 matched groups. One group was fed a high salt diet (3.1 g/Mcal sodium, 5.5 g/Mcal chloride) and the other a control diet of same composition except for salt content (1.0 g/Mcal sodium, 2.2 g/Mcal chloride). Clinical examination, glomerular filtration rate, blood pressure measurement, cardiac and kidney ultrasonography, and urinary and blood tests were performed before and over 24 months after diet implementation. Statistics were performed using a general linear model.

Results

Sixteen cats completed the 2 year study. The only variables affected by dietary salt intake were plasma aldosterone and urinary sodium/creatinine ratio, respectively, higher and lower in the control group all over the study period and urinary specific gravity, lower in the high salt diet group at 3 months.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR), blood pressure, and other routine clinical pathological variables in healthy aged cats were not affected by dietary salt content. The results of this 2 year study do not support the suggestion that chronic increases in dietary salt intake are harmful to renal function in older cats.  相似文献

Procaterol (PCR) is a beta‐2‐adrenergic bronchodilator widely used in Japanese racehorses for treating lower respiratory disease. The pharmacokinetics of PCR following single intravenous (0.5 μg/kg) and oral (2.0 μg/kg) administrations were investigated in six thoroughbred horses. Plasma and urine concentrations of PCR were measured using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Plasma PCR concentration following intravenous administration showed a biphasic elimination pattern. The systemic clearance was 0.47 ± 0.16 L/h/kg, the steady‐state volume of the distribution was 1.21 ± 0.23 L/kg, and the elimination half‐life was 2.85 ± 1.35 h. Heart rate rapidly increased after intravenous administration and gradually decreased thereafter. A strong correlation between heart rate and plasma concentration of PCR was observed. Plasma concentrations of PCR after oral administration were not quantifiable in all horses. Urine concentrations of PCR following intravenous and oral administrations were quantified in all horses until 32 h after administration. Urine PCR concentrations were not significantly different on and after 24 h between intravenous and oral administrations. These results suggest that the bioavailability of orally administrated PCR in horses is very poor, and the drug was eliminated from the body slowly based on urinary concentrations. This report is the first study to demonstrate the pharmacokinetic character of PCR in thoroughbred horses.  相似文献

The effect of four drinking water temperatures (3, 10, 17 and 24°C) on water intake, feed consumption, milk yield and composition, live weight, salt consumption, and rumination, was studied with eight tied-up dairy cows of the Swedish Red and White Breed. The cows were in their 12th to 15th week of lactation at the start of the experiment. A Latin Square design was used with four periods of three weeks each in length. The cows were fed 9 kg hay, 2 kg dried molassed beet pulp and 9 kg concentrates throughout the experiment. The study was conducted from March until June in an average daily barn temperature of 15.3°C (10.2–23.7°C).Water intake was 75.6, 76.7, 76.9 and 71.5 1/day for 3, 10, 17 and 24°C respectively. The intake of the warmest water differed significantly (P<0.01) from the others. The corresponding figures for the milk yield were 25.39, 25.93, 26.33 and 26.09 kg 4% fat-corrected milk per day, where a t-test showed a significance of P<0.05 between 3 and 10°C, P<0.001 between 3 and 17°C and P<0.01 between 3 and 24°C. Feed and salt consumption, milk composition, live weight and rumination were not affected by treatment.  相似文献
