Pulmonic valve rupture was determined to be the cause of severe right-sided heart failure in a 20-year-old Thoroughbred gelding. A flail in the intermediate pulmonic valve cusp was detected by 2-dimensional echocardiography. Significant pulmonic and tricuspid valvular regurgitation were confirmed by Doppler echocardiography. Despite treatment, the horse's condition deteriorated, and euthanasia was performed. At necropsy, a tear in the pulmonary artery extending into the right valve cusp and a tear at the base of the intermediate valve cusp were identified at the junction of the right and intermediate pulmonic valve cusps. Careful echocardiographic evaluation of the pulmonic valve is warranted for horses with right-sided heart failure, for which more common causes cannot be found.  相似文献

An 8-month-old Hanoverian gelding was presented with a history of cardiac murmurs that were not apparent as a foal nor reported at the time of castration. Major echocardiographic findings included mitral valvular thickening, functional stenosis, and mitral regurgitation of sufficient severity to cause diastolic and systolic cardiac murmurs, left-sided volume overload, and pulmonary hypertension. Due to the hemodynamic severity of the lesion and poor prognosis for future performance and longevity, euthanasia was elected. On gross postmortem examination, there was focal fibrous epicarditis affecting the heart base, and the left atrium was moderately dilated. The mitral valve surface was irregular and contained several nodules along the atrial face of the cusp. Histologically, this lesion was diagnosed as a vascular hamartoma, which is rarely reported in veterinary species and has not been described in heart valves. This benign proliferative lesion, and concurrent valvular dysfunction, was associated with an unusual manifestation of clinically evident disease and should be differentiated from common incidental valvular lesions such as hematocysts.  相似文献

A 4-year-old female Boxer was suffering from aortic valve endocarditis with perforation of the right coronary cusp resulting in a flail aortic cusp and subsequent acute aortic insufficiency. This flail aortic cusp was observed on M mode and two-dimensional endocardiograms as a free linear echostructure in the left ventricular outflow tract. Although rarely observed, a free linear echostructure seems more specific of a flail aortic valve than a shaggy echostructure, which can represent a free moving vegetation and thus be confusing. Severe acute aortic insufficiency resulted in an uncommon abnormal mitral valve motion in the absence of early mitral diastolic opening. The absence of early mitral valve opening was thought to be a consequence of coupled aortic regurgitation, reduced left ventricular compliance, and presumably delayed mitral valve opening secondary to coronary artery occlusion. An exaggerated septal diastolic dip accounted for the decreased transmitral inflow. All the usual contractility parameters were within normal range; subsequently, mitral valve motion alterations seems to be more reliable indicators of left ventricular dysfunction during acute aortic insufficiency.  相似文献

The case reported herein describes the placement of a permanent transvenous pacemaker in an older dog with a previously undiagnosed persistent left cranial vena cava (PLCVC) and recent onset symptomatic third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block. On presentation the dog was found to have atrial flutter and third-degree AV block and echocardiography demonstrated evidence of chronic valvular disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The persistent left cranial vena cava was discovered via angiography when difficulties were encountered with pacemaker placement. Successful right ventricular pacing necessitated passage of the lead through the coronary sinus. The attendant complications in pacemaker placement in the presence of a PLCVC are well-described in man but, to the authors' knowledge, have not been described in companion animals.  相似文献

Echocardiography was used to identify a flail left atrioventricular valve cusp caused by ruptured chordae tendineae in each of 4 dogs; two-dimensional echocardiography was superior to M-mode echocardiography in identifying the flail cusps. The following findings on two-dimensional imaging were characteristic: the tip of the flail cusp extended beyond the line of left atrioventricular valve cusp closure and pointed toward the left atrium in systole; the tip was thrust into the left ventricle, and then toward the left ventricular outflow tract in diastole, forming a convex surface to the cusp, which faced toward the left ventricle. The flail motion of the left atrioventricular valve cusp was best observed in the right parasternal long axis or left apical four-chamber views, in a plane parallel to the long axis of the left ventricle and left atrium. Rupture of chordae tendineae leading to flail cusp was attributed to chronic valve degeneration (endocardiosis) in all 4 dogs. Echocardiographic or clinical diagnoses were confirmed by postmortem gross and microscopic studies in all dogs.  相似文献

In humans and small animals, heart disease can lead to an increase in aldosterone, and the aldosterone level correlates with the severity of the heart disease. In horses similar interactions may be possible and may lead to an increase in aldosterone in horses with heart valve insufficiencies. In a prospective clinical trial eight healthy horses (control group) and 40 horses with heart valve disease were examined. In all horses, a clinical (auscultation), electro- and echocardiographic examination was performed and aldosterone plasma concentration was determined. The median aldosterone plasma concentration in the control group was 23.95 pg/ml. Twenty-one out of 40 horses with heart valve insufficiencies and without dimensional changes by echocardiography (group 1) showed a median aldosterone plasma concentration of 45.5 pg/ml. Five out of the 40 horses had a left atrial (LA) dilation and an average LA size with 147.6+/-11 mm (group 2) and a median aldosterone plasma concentration of 95.9 pg/ml. Five other horses had a left ventricular (LV) dilation with an average LV size of 141.6+/-6.8 mm (group 3) and a median aldosterone plasma concentration of about 115.3 pg/ml. In this group a positive correlation between aldosterone plasma concentration and LV existed (r=0.9, P=0.03). Nine horses with both LA (152.8+/-11.4 mm) and LV dilatation (145+/-9 mm, group 4) had a median aldosterone plasma concentration of 161.2 pg/ml. Significant differences of the aldosterone concentrations were observed between the control group and the horses with LA and LV dilation (group 4, P=0.0005), as well as between group 1 (horses with heart valve insufficiency but without dilation) and group 4 (P=0.0006). The study confirms that, as reported for other species, aldosterone rises as the severity of valvular disease increases. However, in this study, as there is only significant difference from normal in the most affected group, it will require further study before the plasma aldosterone level can be relied on as an indicator of the severity of heart disease in an individual horse.  相似文献

Cardiac auscultation was carried out on 111 Thoroughbred horses age 2-5 years to test the hypothesis that athletic training might influence the development of atrioventricular (AV) valve regurgitation in young Thoroughbreds. Murmurs of valvular regurgitation were identified and graded on a 1-6 scale. There were 2 sources of auscultation data: 1) 55 2-year-old horses that were examined by auscultation before training commenced and 9 months later when at race fitness; 2) 56 horses age 2-5 years that were examined on one occasion only (25 2-year-olds, 23 3-year-olds, five 4-year-olds and five 5-year olds). All horses in the second data set were in full training and racing regularly at the time of the examination. To conclude the study, 35 horses were selected randomly from both groups of horses and examined with colour-flow Doppler echocardiography. The aim of the final part of the study was to check specificity and sensitivity of auscultation for detection of AV valve murmurs and therefore validate the auscultation findings. Prior to training, the prevalence in 2-year-old racehorses of murmurs of mitral regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation was 7.3% (4/55) and 12.7% (7/55), respectively. After training, the prevalence proportions increased to 21.8% (12/55) and 25.5% (14/55). After training, one horse developed a murmur characteristic of aortic regurgitation. The differences in murmur prevalence were statistically significant for mitral and tricuspid regurgitation (paired t test results: mitral regurgitation, P = 0.019; tricuspid regurgitation, P = 0.007), as were the differences in mean murmur grade (P = 0.018 and P = 0.0006, respectively). There were no significant effects of age on the prevalence of valvular regurgitation in 56 horses examined at race fitness. Auscultation was a specific (specificity 100%) and reasonably sensitive method for detection of murmurs of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation (mitral regurgitation: positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value 84%, tricuspid regurgitation: positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value 65%). These data suggest that the prevalence and grade of murmurs of mitral and tricuspid valvular regurgitation increase in 2-year-old Thoroughbreds after 9 months of athletic training. Whereas the effects of age and growth on the prevalence of murmurs cannot be ruled out from these data, this study suggests that there is an influence of athletic training on the development of atrioventricular valvular regurgitation in flat-racing Thoroughbreds.  相似文献

An anatomical study of the tricuspid valve was performed in the hearts of 45 dogs using a method of dissection which preserves the integrity of the valve. Morphometrical criteria such as the width of the cusp base and larger depth of cusp and morphological criteria such as the number of tendinous cords, the perimeter of the fibrous ring and the properties of the papillary muscle were adopted for the characterization of a cusp. The tricuspid valve was not consistent with three cusps, but it was observed to present 2, 4 or 5 cusps in 68% of the cases.  相似文献

Chronic valvular disease (valvular endocardiosis) is the most common cardiac abnormality of the dog. This paper demonstrates how this condition increases in frequency and severity with advancing age by means of a visual impression method for the gross examination of the heart valves. These lesions occur in descending order of frequency and severity in the left atrioventricular valve, the septal cusp of the right atrioventricular valve, the mural cusp of the same valve, the aortic valve and the pulmonary valve. The histopathological features of these lesions are outlined. Résumé. La maladie chronique valvulaire (endocardiose valvulaire) est l'anomalie la plu commune chez le chien. Trifoliate left atrioventricular (AV) valve with common atrioventricular junction is considered part of the spectrum of atrioventricular septal defect. This valve morphology is typically associated with defects in the AV septum resulting in communication at the atrial or ventricular level, but has also been described as an isolated defect in the setting of a common AV junction without AV septal defect. Trifoliate left AV valve exhibits a line of apposition between the bridging leaflets that is directed toward the inlet interventricular septum, distinguishing it from isolated mitral valve cleft in which the orientation of the bridging leaflets are toward the left ventricular outflow tract. The echocardiographic findings of four dogs with trifoliate left AV valve are described; two with intact septal structures and two with large ostium primum defects. Three dogs underwent open surgical repair using different approaches depending on the presence or absence of a septal defect. One of these underwent concurrent surgical repair for right AV valve dysplasia. One dog with intact septal structures underwent interventional closure of a concurrent patent ductus arteriosus. Current terminology associated with trileaflet left AV valve malformations is reviewed.  相似文献

Twenty-nine female Angus cattle were monitored from birth until 24 months of age for infection with types 3 and 7 adenoviruses (AV3, AV7) and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus by virus isolation and neutralization tests. Twenty-seven animals remained in the study for 450 days, whereas 16 animals remained at the conclusion of the tests. Viruses were not isolated from test animals. Seroepizootiologic examination indicated that there were 28 infections with AV3, 33 infections with AV7, and 13 infections with BVD virus. Of these infections, 5 with AV3, 6 with AV7, and 2 with BVD virus were reinfections. All but 1 primary AV3 infection had occurred between 180 and 360 days after parturition. Infection with AV7 occurred earlier than that with AV3, as shown by 6 seropositive animals by 180 days. Most adenovirus infections were documented after animals had left confinement and were turned out to pasture. Most BVD virus infections occurred within the first 90 days after parturition. At completion of the study, only 1 animal had not shown evidence of AV3 infection, 2 animals had not been infected with AV7, and 7 cows had remained free of BVD virus infection.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential haemodynamic effects of valvular insufficiency and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) in horses with atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore in ten healthy horses (group 1) and 40 horses with AF a clinical examination, a lung examination, echocardiography and right heart catheterization for measurement of intracardic and pulmonary pressures were performed. According to the clinical findings the horses with AF were subdivided into 4 groups (group 2: AF; group 3: AF/valvular insufficiency; group 4: AF/RAO; group 5: AF/valvular insufficiency/RAO). Most of the horses of group 3 and 5 suffered from two valvular insufficiencies (mitral and tricuspid valve insufficiency: n=11, mitral and aortic valve insufficiency: n=2). The remaining horses showed a single mitral (n=6), tricuspid (n=2) or aortic valve insufficiency (n=1) or more than two valvular insufficiencies (n=4). In group 2 right ventricular mean pressure (RVPm) was higher than in group 1 and 4 (P<0.025); diastolic right ventricular pressure was higher than in group 1; PWP was higher than in group 1 and group 4; PDP was lower compared to group1. Compared to group1 in group 3 left atrial diameter (LA) was greater; the PAPs was higher and the PDP lower (P<0.05). In group 4 RVPm and PWP was lower compared to group 2. In group 5 LA, fractional shortening and diastolic left ventricular diameter were greater, PWP and PAPs were higher and PDP lower compared to group1. Twenty six of the 40 horses with AF (65%) were treated. Successful cardioversion to sinus rhythm occurred in 15 horses (58%). Therapy was successful in 50% of the treated horses of group 2 and 3, in 67% of the treated horses of group 4 and in 63% of the treated horses in group 5. In conclusion the presence of valvular insufficiency or RAO influences the haemodynamics of horses with AF.  相似文献

It is important for the assessment of toxicological effects of chemicals to know what kinds of neoplasms naturally occur in the early life of experimental animals. In the present study, we demonstrated spontaneous neoplasms in Sprague-Dawley rats used in 4-, 13- and 26-week toxicity studies conducted at Bozo Research Center in the last decade. The tumors, which were first observed in 19-week-old animals, included anterior adenoma of the pituitary, follicular cell adenocarcinoma and C cell adenoma of the thyroids, nephroblastoma of the kidneys, basal cell tumor of the skin and malignant lymphoma. Thereafter, hemangiosarcoma of the tongue, adenocarcinoma of the submandibular glands, histiocytic sarcoma of the spleen, oligodendroglioma of the brain and adenocarcinoma and fibroadenoma of the mammary glands were detected in 32-week-old animals. The incidences of mammary adenocarcinoma and pituitary anterior adenoma were higher than those of other tumors. The present results showed that the same tumors as reported in aged rats could also develop in younger rats.  相似文献

Spontaneous renal tubule tumors (RTTs), with a distinctive morphological phenotype, were present in three Sprague-Dawley rats, 1 male and 2 females, out a total of 120 animals of each sex from untreated and placebo control groups in a 2-year carcinogenicity study. One female had one carcinoma, adenoma and hyperplasia, and the other female had five adenomas and many hyperplastic lesions; the male case had one carcinoma. From these cases, a biological continuum of hyperplasia, adenoma and carcinoma could be recognized. The tumors were present in the renal cortex and appeared as solid lobulated growths with occasional central necrosis. The lobules were divided by a small amount of fibrovascular tissue. Occasionally the larger tumors contained a cystic area. Tumor cells appeared distinctive and exhibited variable amounts of eosinophilic/amphophilic and vacuolated cytoplasm. Nuclei were round to oval with a prominent nucleolus. Mitotic figures were uncommon, and no distant metastasis was noted. The tumors were seen as multiple and bilateral lesions in two animals and had no apparent relationship to chronic progressive nephropathy (CPN). Foci of tubule hyperplasia were also noted to contain the same type of cellular morphology. The morphological and biological features of these 3 cases resembled the amphophilic-vacuolar (AV) variant of RTT that has been posited to be of familial origin. This is a report of spontaneous familial renal tumors in Sprague-Dawley rats from Japan.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and development of valvular regurgitation and its effect on racing performance in Standardbred trotters from 2 to 3.5 years of age. DESIGN: Longitudinal observational study. ANIMALS: 103 horses. PROCEDURE: Horses were examined via echocardiographic imaging 4 times at 6-month intervals. Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiographic examinations were performed in each horse, and color Doppler imaging was used to detect and evaluate regurgitant blood flow at each valve. RESULTS: For all cardiac valves, the frequency of valvular regurgitation increased significantly during the 18-month study period. Regurgitation was mild in all valves in which it was detected, and no progression in severity was observed at any valve. Tricuspid regurgitation was more prevalent in horses that raced regularly and was diagnosed more frequently in males and horses with larger left ventricular mass and left ventricular internal diameter during diastole. No relationship between racing performance and valvular regurgitation was observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The incidence of valvular regurgitation increased during the study period, and it was common at 3.5 years of age. It was not possible to determine whether the increase was a result of maturity or training. The study revealed that there is a high prevalence of mild valvular regurgitation at this age, but apparently, the regurgitation had no effect on racing performance in this age group. Whether regurgitation will progress or influence future performance is not known.  相似文献

An 8-month-old entire Miniature Dachshund, weighing 4.2 kg, was presented for examination following delvelopment of a cough. Ventricular septal defect had been diagnosed tentatively in its infancy on the basis of a cardiac murmur detected by auscultation and echocardiography. Echocardiography using a B mode right parasternal long-axis view showed a defect at the atrioventricular junction and a thickened cusp of the aortic valve prolapsing into the defect. Colour-flow Doppler showed shunt blood flow across the defect at the level of the atrioventricular junction, from left to right. The sinus of Valsalva was dilated, with turbulent blood flow. Aortic regurgitation was also observed. Cardiac catheterisation studies confirmed the diagnosis of a supracristal ventricular septal defect with aortic regurgitation. Despite medication with digoxin, enalapril and aminophylin, started from the first admission, left ventricular internal dimensions gradually increased, and fractional shortening of the left ventricle gradually decreased. Surgery, with the aid of extracorporeal circulation, to close the ventricular septal defect, was performed 1 year after the initial examination. The aortic valve was left untreated. Postoperatively, the systolic murmur disappeared. Shunt flow from the left to the right ventricle was no longer observed on echocardiography, however there was still a small amount of aortic regurgitation during diastole visualised with colour-flow Doppler echocardiography. The prolapse of the cusp of the aortic valve on B-mode echocardiography was no longer observed and thickening of the cusp had not progressed. Left ventricular function measurement using M mode echocardiography showed a reduced left ventricular volume overload with reduced left ventricular internal dimensions and increased fractional shortening. The cough was relieved and no follow-up medication was scheduled. Early surgical closure of the ventricular septal defect improved the patient's condition and controlled prolapse and thickening of the aortic valve.  相似文献

Aortic insufficiency was suspected in a thin 1-year-old colt with a grade IV/V decrescendo holodiastolic murmur and a bounding arterial pulse. Echocardiographic findings (diastolic fluttering of the septal leaflet of the mitral valve, left ventricular volume overload, and incomplete aortic valve closure) were diagnostic for aortic valve insufficiency. Moderately thick fibrotic aortic valve leaflets were found at necropsy. Fenestrations were found in the aortic and pulmonic valve cusps. Congenital valvular disease may have led to aortic valvular insufficiency in this horse.  相似文献

Congenital vitelline duct anomalies other than Meckel’s diverticulum are rare in animals. A cyst of approximately 8 mm in diameter was observed on the antimesenteric surface of the ileal serosa in a 10-week-old female Crl:CD(SD) rat. Microscopically, the cyst closely resembled the ileum, but it did not communicate with the ileal lumen. We diagnosed this case as a vitelline cyst derived from the vitelline duct based on the location where it developed and its histological behavior. In rats, only Meckel’s diverticulum has been reported with a congenital anomaly of the vitelline duct, and no other spontaneous anomalies including a vitelline cyst have been reported. This case may be the first report concerning a vitelline cyst in the rat ileum.  相似文献

Double outlet right ventricle in a calf.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Double outlet right ventricle, a rare congenital heart anomaly of either animals or man, was diagnosed in a three day old Brangus heifer. The clinical course was brief, consisting of terminal recumbency, dyspnea and cyanosis. Upon necropsy, the heart was enlarged as a result of marked dilatation of the right atrium and the right ventricle. The aorta arose from the right ventricle while the left ventricle ended blindly near the ventral cusp of the left atrioventricular valve. The wall of the left ventricle was thickened, reducing the ventricular lumen.  相似文献

The renin-angiotensin system, including angiotensin (Ang) II and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), plays an important role in cardiac fibrous tissue formation. Since changes in valvular collagen are a central part of myxomatous mitral valve disease in the dog, we speculated that Ang II and ACE might play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. In 10 mitral valves, five with and five without clear myxomatous changes, the presence and distribution of Ang II receptors and ACE was examined autoradiographically, using 125I-Ang II and 125I-lisinopril, respectively. At postmortem examination, diseased valves were taken from old dogs, control valves from young adult dogs. No significant level of Ang II and lisinopril binding was found in normal as well as diseased valve leaflets. Equally low, insignificant levels of 125I-Ang II binding were found in the myocardium of dogs with and without valvular disease. No significant level of myocardial 125I-lisinopril binding was found. The lack of autoradiographic evidence of Ang II receptors and ACE in normal and diseased canine mitral valve leaflets suggests that the renin-angiotensin system does not play a major role in the pathogenesis of the valvular changes.  相似文献
