A 9-month incubation experiment using composted and non-composted amendments derived from vine pruning waste and sewage sludge was carried out to study the effects of the nature and stability of organic amendments on the structural composition of organic matter (OM) in a semi-arid soil. The changes of soil OM,both in the whole soil and in the extractable carbon with pyrophosphate, were evaluated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography and chemical analyses.By the end of the experiment, the soils amended with pruning waste exhibited less organic carbon loss than those receiving sewage sludge. The non-composted residues increased the aliphatic-pyrolytic products of the OM,both in the whole soil and also in the pyrophosphate extract, with the products derived from peptides and proteins being significantly higher. After 9 months,in the soils amended with pruning waste the relative abundance of phenolic-pyrolytic products derived from phenolic compounds, lignin and proteins in the whole soil tended to increase more than those in the soils amended with sewage sludge. However, the extractable OM with pyrophosphate in the soils amended with composted residues tended to have higher contents of these phenolic-pyrolytic products than that in non-composted ones. Thus, despite the stability of pruning waste, the composting of this material promoted the incorporation of phenolic compounds to the soil OM.The pyrolytic indices (furfural/pyrrole and aliphatic/aromatic ratios) showed the diminution of aliphatic compounds and the increase of aromatic compounds, indicating the stabilization of the OM in the amended soils after 9 months. In conclusion, the changes of soil OM depend on the nature and stability of the organic amendments, with composted vine pruning waste favouring humification.

The sorption and leaching of ethametsulfuron-methyl by an acidic soil, after organic amendment with humic acid (HA) and a commercial peat, were studied in batch and soil column experiments. Adsorption capacity (Kf) values, obtained by fitting the experimental data to the Freundlich equation, ranged from 4.39 for the original soil containing 1.02% OC to 10.56 for the organic amended soils containing 2.61% OC. The increase in herbicide adsorption by organic amendment addition to soil was attributed to the high adsorptive capacity of the insoluble organic matter added to the soil. Evidence provided by FT-IR analysis suggested multifunctional hydrogen bonds were involved in the adsorption of ethametsulfuron-methyl on organic matter. The distribution of ethametsulfuron-methyl along the soil profile, obtained from soil column experiments, indicated that the amount of ethametsulfuron-methyl retained ranged from 68.4% for the column filled with the original soil to 92.4% for that filled with the organic amended soil. Amounts of ethametsulfuron-methyl recovered in the leachates, which ranged from 7.7% (organic amended soil) to 23.7% (unamended soil) of that applied, depended upon the loading rate and the source of organic amendment. Organic amendments significantly reduced the leaching of ethametsulfuron-methyl, and humic acid showed the higher potential than peat. This research suggests that organic amendment may be an effective management practice for controlling pesticide leaching.

Limestone quarrying reduces the land's capacity to support a complete functional ecosystem. Adding sewage sludge to mining residues facilitates the establishment of a vegetation cover and can stimulate C and N cycling. We aimed to evaluate the effects of three composted and three thermally dried sewage sludges, on some biological properties of two types of debris (extraction soil and trituration soil) from a limestone quarry. Lysimeters filled with debris-sludge mixtures and control soils were sampled immediately after preparation and after being left in the open for 13 months. Total carbohydrates (TCH), 0.5 M K2SO4 extractable (ECH) carbohydrates, 0.5 M K2SO4 extractable organic C (EOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial respiration (MR), β-glucosidase activity and β-galactosidase activity were determined immediately after sampling. The treated soils were also analyzed for their more general physicochemical characteristics. Adding sewage sludge clearly improved the physicochemical and biological properties of the residual soil and the effect of the type of sludge was greater than that of the type of soil. The sludge effect was generally more durable over the trituration soil. The sludge effect decreased the most in MR and EOC followed by MBC and ECH. Total carbohydrates showed the least enhancement but the sludge effect on this endpoint had the smaller decrease with time. Root exudates and plant debris contributed to β-glucosidase and β-galactosidase activities in the treated soils. Activities present in mixtures partly corresponded to enzymes free in the soil aqueous face. β-Glucosidase was also partly associated with humified organic matter. Thirteen months after sludge addition a fraction of the organic matter present in soils was still moderately labile. Results observed in BMC and MR suggests the sludge did not cause major toxic effects on residual soils. The sludge effect differed with the pre and post treatments of the sludges; thermal drying made the sludge organic matter more easily decomposable.

Vermicomposts from the wine and distillery industry containing spent grape marc (V1), biosolid vinasse (V2) and alperujo (V3) from the olive‐oil industry were investigated as organic amendments to a sandy and a clay soil with low organic carbon (OC) contents (≤1%). The sorption‐desorption process was studied in batch experiments using diuron as a non‐ionic herbicide model. The effect of soil and vermicompost characteristics, the solution's ionic strength and incubation time of amended soils on the sorption process was studied. The addition of vermicompost changed soil properties and enhanced sorption capacity by two‐ to four‐fold. The Koc variability showed that exogenous OC composition influenced diuron sorption. Vermicompost V1, which had the largest OC and lignin content, recorded the largest sorption increment. Vermicompost V3, which had the greatest dissolved organic carbon content and a high degree of humification, made the smallest contribution to sorption. Sorption was also dependent on extraneous calcium in the solution. The incubation of amended soils reduced diuron sorption efficiency except with V3. Pyrolysis‐gas chromatography (Py‐GC) analysis was a useful tool to characterize the vermicomposts and to understand the variation of diuron sorption constants after vermicompost incubation. This research encourages the use of vermicompost from agro‐industrial wastes as a sustainable means to minimize the side effects of neutral herbicides.

A pot experiment was conducted in the greenhouse to investigate the effects of composted sewage sludge as a soil amendment on growth and mineral composition of ‘Mustang’ tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Three desert soils (loamy sand, sandy loam, clay) were amended with two different composted sewage sludges (city and county) at rates of 0, 7.5, 15, 30 and 60% by volume. Tall fescue was grown in the amended soils for four months. Growth rates, measured as harvested clippings, increased with sludge loading rate and also with clay content of the soil. Higher growth rates were maintained with the city as compared to the county sludge, although for both sources, growth declined for most treatments after nine weeks. Turf color ratings and percent N in the tissue increased with sludge loading rate and were highly correlated. Tissue analysis indicated a varied response between soil types.

Abstract

Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LASs) are anionic surfactants commonly used in commercial detergents. A potential risk associated with the recycling of sewage waste materials is the presence of LASs and their primary degradation products, which could accumulate in sludge, especially during anaerobic processing. The long‐term accumulation of these contaminants in soils and especially the potential disturbance of soil functions need to be studied in more detail. In our study, the influence of the amendment added to an agricultural soil with different organic wastes containing LASs on organic matter content and nitrogen (N) content evolution and mineralization was studied in field conditions. A completely randomized 3×3 factorial arrangement, representing two sewage sludge types (composted and uncomposted) and three levels of LAS presence (0, 15, and 30 g/m2) in treated soils, was established using field plots (7×2 m); the results are compared with untreated plots. Statistical models based on covariance analysis were used to understand the dynamics of and the main factors influencing carbon (C) and N mineralization in sewage sludge amended–soils in the presence of LAS. LAS seemed to alter nitrogen mineralization, especially the nitrate dynamics.

Soil amendment with sewage sludge (SS) from municipal wastewater treatment plants is nowadays a common practice for both increasing soil organic matter and nutrient contents and waste disposal. However, the application of organic amendments that are not sufficiently mature and stable may adversely affect soil properties. Composting and thermal drying are treatments designed to minimize these possible deleterious effects and to facilitate the use of SS as a soil organic amendment. In this work, an arid soil either unamended or amended with composted sewage sludge (CSS) or thermally-dried sewage sludge (TSS) was moistened to an equivalent of 60% soil water holding capacity and incubated for 60 days at 28 °C. The C–CO2 emission from the samples was periodically measured in order to study C mineralization kinetics and evaluate the use of these SS as organic amendments. In all cases, C mineralization decreased after the first day. TSS-amended soil showed significantly higher mineralization rates than unamended and CSS-amended soils during the incubation period. The data of cumulative C–CO2 released from unamended and SS-amended soils were fitted to six different kinetic models. A two simultaneous reactions model, which considers two organic pools with different degree of biodegradability, was found to be the most appropriate to describe C mineralization kinetics for all the soils. The parameters derived from this model suggested a larger presence of easily biodegradable compounds in TSS-amended soil than in CSS-amended soil, which in turn presented a C mineralization pattern very similar to that of the unamended soil. Furthermore, net mineralization coefficient and complementary mineralization coefficient were calculated from C mineralization data. The largest losses of C were measured for TSS-amended soil probably due to an extended microbial activity. The results obtained thus indicated that CSS is more efficient for increasing total organic C in arid soils.

Metal availability in soils is strongly related with sorption processes and the possible association of the metal ions with a particular particle-size fraction. Therefore, studies of metal retention by a soil will be aided if retention by different size fractions is also studied. Sorption of copper on a calcareous soil and its textural fractions was studied in batch assays. The soil was amended over 3 years with two agroindustrial residues, a composted olive mill sludge and vinasse. Sorption of Cu on the calcareous soil was very large (110 mmol kg−1) and was enhanced by both amendments. Metal retention by the clay fraction of the unamended soil was less than that of the whole soil, but increased dramatically after amendment with olive mill sludge. This was caused by the larger calcite content in this fraction as well as the increase in organic matter content. The amount of Cu sorbed was very large in the silt fraction, again because of the carbonate content of this fraction (300–460 g kg−1). Copper sorption decreased dramatically after removal of carbonate. Copper retention tended to be enhanced by organic amendments. This was particularly evident in the silt fraction, as a consequence of the organic matter accumulation in this fraction.
Copper sorption on the calcareous soil and its silt fractions (unamended and amended) was irreversible. By contrast, desorption was measurable from all the carbonate-free samples (both whole soil and textural fractions), although in all cases a large hysteresis was observed. We conclude that carbonate was the main component responsible for the lack of reversibility.

Composting and thermal drying are amongst the most commonly used post-digestion processes for allowing sanitation and biological stabilization of sewage sludge from municipal treatment plants, and making it suitable as soil conditioner for use in agriculture. To assess the impact of sludge-derived materials on soil microbial properties, fresh (LAF), composted (LAC) and thermally dried (LAT) sludge fractions, each resulting from a different post-treatment process of a same aerobically digested sewage sludge, were added at 1% (w/w) application rate on two contrasting (a loam and a loamy sand) soils and incubated under laboratory conditions for 28 days. Soil respiration, microbial ATP content, hydrolytic activities and arginine ammonification rate were monitored throughout the incubation period. Results showed that soil biochemical variables, including the metabolic quotient (qCO2), were markedly stimulated after sludge application, and the magnitude of this stimulatory effect was dependent on sludge type (precisely LAT > LAF > LAC), but not on soil type. This effect was related to the content of stable organic matter, which was lower in LAT. Genetic fingerprinting by PCR–DGGE revealed that compositional shifts of soil bacterial and, at greater extent, actinobacterial communities were responsive to the amendment with a differing sludge fraction. The observed time-dependent changes in the DGGE profiles of amended soils reflected the microbial turnover dependent on the sludge nutrient input, whereas no indications of adverse effects of sludge-borne contaminants were noted. Our findings indicate that composting rather thermal drying can represent a more appropriate post-digestion process to make sewage sludge suitable for use as soil conditioner in agriculture.

The effects of increased cobalt additions (0, 50, 100 and 200 v mg v kg m 1 soil) in sewage sludge-amended soil on organic matter, N Kjeldahl, ammonium and nitrate were studied in this experiment. Three different rates of sewage sludge were applied (0, 30 and 60 v tn v ha m 1 ) to soil as main plots, using tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill var. Ramy) such testing cultivation. Plant biomass and nitrogen content in tomato leaf were also monitored. The organic matter in the soil was clearly affected by the fertilization. N Kjeldahl, ammonium and nitrate were favoured by organic treatments. Co seemed to reduce the transformation of ammonium to nitrate on amended soils, with accumulation of ammonium forms, especially at the higher application rates of sewage sludge. This incidence of Co on nitrogen species in soil decreased with the time of experiment, probably due to the reduction of availability of the pollutant. Aerial biomass production and nitrogen content in leaf were increased for the organic fertilization compared to the control. Only very high levels of Co in soil reduced significantly the aerial biomass production of tomato plants in amended soils. Co seemed to induce a decrease of the nitrogen in leaf in the amended soils, but not for the non-fertilized soils.

Partition coefficients K P of nonylphenol (NP) in soil were determined for 193 soil samples which differed widely in content of soil organic carbon (SOC), hydrogen activity, clay content, and in the content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). By means of multiple linear regression analysis (MLR), pedotransfer functions were derived to predict partition coefficients from soil data. SOC and pH affected the sorption, though the latter was in a range significantly below the pKa of NP. Quality of soil organic matter presumably plays an important but yet not quantified role in sorption of NP. For soil samples with SOC values less than 3 g kg?1, model prediction became uncertain with this linear approach. We suggest that using only SOC and pH data results in good prediction of NP sorption in soils with SOC higher than 3 g kg?1. Considering the varying validity of the linear model for different ranges of the most sensitive parameter SOC, a more flexible, nonlinear approach was tested. The application of an artificial neuronal network (ANN) to predict sorption of NP in soils showed a sigmoidal relation between K P and SOC. The nonlinear ANN approach provided good results compared to the MLR approach and represents an alternative tool for prediction of NP partitioning coefficients.

Changes in farming practices over long times can affect the sorption behaviour of MCPA ((4‐chloro‐2‐methylphenoxy)acetic acid). We studied the adsorption–desorption mechanisms of MCPA on soil with varied amounts and origins of soil organic matter obtained from a long‐term field experiment with various organic amendments. The origin of the soil organic matter seems to be crucial for the sorption behaviour of MCPA. Samples of soil amended with sewage sludge sorbed MCPA more strongly than the soil under any other treatment. Peat‐amended soil was second followed by soil receiving animal manure, green manure, mineral fertilizer without N and the fallowed soil. Both the carbon content and the origin of the organic matter are important for the sorption. A decrease of carbon content of a soil does not necessarily imply a reduction of sorption capacity for polar organic acids such as MCPA. Nevertheless, our adsorption–desorption experiments suggest that with decreasing carbon content the role of mineral sorption mechanisms could become more pronounced. Our results showed that interactions of soil organic matter and soil minerals distinctly influence adsorption properties for MCPA.

The recycling of suitable organic wastes can enhance soil fertility via effects on soil physical, chemical and biological properties. To compare the effects of digested (DS), thermally dried (TDS) and composted dewatered (CDS) sewage sludge on soil microbiological properties, an experiment was conducted at field sites for more than one year (401 d) when applied to two Mediterranean degraded soils (loam and loamy sand soils). All three types of sewage sludge had a significant effect on measured parameters. I...

This study was carried out to investigate the sorption properties of man‐made soil developed from sewage sludge, municipal wastes, brick and mortar debris, harbour sludge, sand fills, fly ash, and wastes from coking plants and coal mines. The composition of organic matter in the samples was analysed, and the sorption isotherms of four reference chemicals (nitrobenzene, atrazine, 2,4‐D, pentachlorophenol) were determined. Fly ash, which contains up to 89% of its carbon as Black Carbon, showed a strong affinity to all four chemicals. For the other waste materials, a strong correlation between the logarithm of the Freundlich adsorption constant, Kf, and the logarithm of organic carbon, Co, was established (r = 0.85–0.96). This holds for the non‐ionic nitrobenzene and also, within a certain pH range depending on the pKa of the compound, for the three ionizable organic compounds (atrazine: pH > 4; 2,4‐D: pH > 5; PCP: pH > 6). At pH near the pKa value the sorption is sensitive to pH. There were no statistically significant differences between the waste materials and the natural soils in the relations between logKf and logCo for either ionic or non‐ionic chemicals. This result suggests that the method devised for estimating the sorption of organic chemicals in natural soils based on their content of organic carbon is equally valuable for the waste materials, with the exception of fly ash which contains a large amount of Black Carbon.

Changes produced in the biological characteristics of an arid soil by the addition of various urban wastes (municipal solid waste, sewage sludge and compost) at different doses, were evaluated during a 360-day incubation experiment. The addition of organic materials to the soil increased the values of biomass carbon, basal respiration, biomass C/total organic C ratio and metabolic quotient (qCO2), indicating the activation of soil microorganisms. These biological parameters showed a decreasing tendency with time. Nevertheless, their values in amended soils were higher than in control soil, which clearly indicates the improvement of soil biological quality brought about by the organic amendment. This favorable effect on soil biological activity was more noticeable with the addition of fresh wastes (municipal solid waste or sewage sludge) than with compost. In turn, this effect was more permanent when the soil was amended with municipal solid waste than when it was amended with sewage sludge.

The addition of organic amendments to soil increases soil organic matter content and stimulates soil microbial activity. Thus, processes affecting herbicide fate in the soil should be affected. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of olive oil production industry organic waste (alperujo) on soil sorption-desorption, degradation, and leaching of diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] and terbuthylazine [N2-tert-butyl-6-chloro-N4-ethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine], two herbicides widely used in olive crops. The soils used in this study were a sandy soil and a silty clay soil from two different olive groves. The sandy soil was amended in the laboratory with fresh (uncomposted) alperujo at the rate of 10% w/w, and the silty clay soil was amended in the field with fresh alperujo at the rate of 256 kg per tree during 4 years and in the laboratory with fresh or composted alperujo. Sorption of both herbicides increased in laboratory-amended soils as compared to unamended or field-amended soils, and this process was less reversible in laboratory-amended soils, except for diuron in amended sandy soil. Addition of alperujo to soils increased half-lives of the herbicides in most of the soils. Diuron and terbuthylazine leached through unamended sandy soil, but no herbicide was detected in laboratory-amended soil. Diuron did not leach through amended or unamended silty clay soil, whereas small amounts of terbuthylazine were detected in leachates from unamended soil. Despite their higher sorption capacity, greater amounts of terbuthylazine were found in the leachates from amended silty clay soils. The amounts of dissolved organic matter from alperujo and the degree of humification can affect sorption, degradation, and leaching of these two classes of herbicides in soils. It appears that adding alperujo to soil would not have adverse impacts on the behavior of herbicides in olive production.

Biochar application has been suggested for reducing toxic levels of metals in contaminated soils and enhancing nutrient retention in agro‐ecosystems. We studied sorption of copper (Cu(II)) and sulphate‐sulphur (SO4‐S) to charcoal, gasification coke and flash‐pyrolysis biochar in order to relate sorption to char properties. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of composting of charcoal and gasification coke on sorptive properties. Langmuir sorption affinity coefficients for Cu(II) for non‐composted biochars increased in the order flash‐pyrolysis char < charcoal < gasification coke. The sorption capacity for Cu(II) of the chars decreased in the order gasification coke (629 mg kg?1) > flash‐pyrolysis char (196 mg kg?1) > charcoal (56 mg kg?1). Composting significantly increased the sorption affinity coefficient approximately by a factor of 5 for charcoal (up to 1.1 l mg?1) and by a factor of 3–4 for gasification coke (up to 3.2 l mg?1). Whereas Cu(II) sorption to gasification coke (composted or not) was largely irreversible, sorption to flash‐pyrolysis char and charcoal showed higher reversibility. Relationships between Cu(II) sorption and biochar properties such as cation exchange capacity, specific surface area or aromaticity suggest that sorption was largely determined by complexation with organic matter. Sorption of SO4‐S was negligible by non‐composted and composted biochars. Composted gasification coke might be suited to reducing toxic Cu(II) concentrations in contaminated soils. Composted charcoal can potentially improve Cu(II) retention in a plant available form in acidic, sandy soils with small organic matter contents. Transient effects of biochars on soil pH can over‐ride the influence of sorption to biochars on concentrations of trace elements in soil solution and their availability to plants.
