An indoor trial was conducted for 28 days to evaluate the effects and interactions of biofloc and seaweed Ulva lactuca in water quality and growth of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in intensive system. L. vannamei (4.54 ± 0.09 g) were stocked in experimental tanks at a density 132 shrimp m?2 (566 shrimp m?3) and the U. lactuca was stocked at a density 0.46 kg m?2 (2.0 kg m?3). Biofloc with seaweed (BF-S) significantly reduced (P < 0.05) total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) by 25.9 %, nitrite–nitrogen (NO2–N) by 72.8 %, phosphate (PO 4 3 -P) by 24.6 %, and total suspended solids by 12.9 % in the water and significantly increased (P < 0.05) settleable solids by 34.2 % and final weight of shrimp by 6.9 % as compared to biofloc without seaweed. The BF-S can contribute by reducing nitrogen compounds (TAN and NO2–N), phosphate (PO 4 3 -P), and total suspended solids in water and increased final weight of shrimp.  相似文献

The initial stages of rearing marine shrimp using biofloc technology (BFT) involve the biofloc formation process. At the same time, there is an increase in the levels of total suspended solids and a decrease in alkalinity and pH. This reduction of alkalinity and pH occurs due to the consumption of inorganic carbon by the autotrophic bacteria present in the bioflocs and biofilms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different alkalinities on water quality and the zootechnical performance of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in a BFT system. The experiment consisted of four treatments, with three replicates each: 75, 150, 225 and 300 mg CaCO3/L. To maintain the alkalinity at the established level, sodium bicarbonate was applied. For the experiments, twelve experimental units (area = 0.20 m2) with an effective volume of 50 L were stocked with 30 juvenile L. vannamei (0.20 ± 0.07 g), to achieve a stocking density of 150 shrimps/m2 and were maintained for an experimental period of 49 days. The 75 treatment presented the highest levels of ammonia and nitrite throughout the study, compared to the 150 and 300 treatments. The results showed that higher alkalinity favors biofloc formation and the establishment of nitrifying bacteria.  相似文献

To achieve water reuse in recirculating aquaculture systems, intermittent nitrification and denitrification processes using internal fibrous media was proposed. A pre-acclimated Biocord biofilter, with an initial nitrification rate of 17.1 ± 12.4 mg total ammonia nitrogen-N/m2/d was applied in a marine whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture tank. Throughout the experiment, the aerobic nitrification activity of the biofilter was sufficient to control the ammonia and nitrite levels below 0.2 mg-N/L with an accumulation of nitrate up to 50 mg-N/L. The remaining nitrate was successfully removed after shrimp harvest with the same biofilter through anoxic denitrification in conjunction with a methanol supplement at a chemical oxygen demand: nitrate-N ratio of 5:1. With complete nitrogen removal, the water was re-aerated and the next crop of shrimp culture was initiated. In this study, a two-crop shrimp cultivation was performed in sequence in the same tank without water exchange. The microbial diversity was monitored using high-throughput sequencing on Illumina MiSeq, which demonstrated that Proteobacteria (45.3 %), Chloroflexi (18.4 %), and Bacteroidetes (17.1 %) were the most abundant phyla. With an emphasis on nitrogen removal, the family Nitrosomonadaceae and Nitrospiraceae were the dominant nitrifying bacteria during the aerobic nitrification, while a high relative abundance of the Methylophaga and Methylotenera genera was observed under the anoxic condition.  相似文献

The Biofloc Technology System (BFT) is characterized by stimulating the development of a microbial community that acts mainly in the maintenance of water quality but also promotes other benefits such as increased productivity, biosafety and serves as a supplementary source of food for reared animals. Two main groups of bacteria are involved in nitrogen removal in this system: heterotrophic bacteria and autotrophic nitrifying bacteria, present in the aggregates. Different fertilization techniques can be used for the formation and maintenance of bioflocs, depending on which group of bacteria the predominance is preferred. This study aimed to analyze the effect of different organic fertilization techniques on the bioflocs establishment, amount of water used, the production of suspended solids and the growth performance of Litopenaeus vannamei reared in the BFT System. Shrimp juveniles were stocked in 150-liter tanks at a stocking density of 300 shrimps/m³. Three treatments (in triplicate) were tested using different fertilization techniques: 1) without supplementary organic fertilization; 2) organic fertilization according to nominal ammonia reading (heterotrophic/chemoautotrophic = “mixed” system) and 3) organic fertilization according to estimated ammonia production (heterotrophic). The temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity and total suspended solids (TSS) of the water were monitored. The water quality parameters were influenced by the treatments with differences found in the concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alkalinity and TSS. Ammonia levels were higher in control treatment since no organic fertilization was performed. Nitrite levels were lower in heterotrophic system since the nitrifying pathway was suppressed due to daily fertilization, also resulting in lower nitrate levels. There were significant differences in the growth performance parameters, with the highest final weight and yield, as well as the lowest FCR, found in the mixed treatment. There were no significant differences among survival. The mixed system treatment used less water during production cycle compared to other treatments while the volume of solids removed was almost four times greater in the heterotrophic treatment compared to the others. These results show that adopting a mixed heterotrophic/chemoautotrophic biofloc system improves shrimp growth performance, optimize water use and decrease solids production.  相似文献

In biofloc technology (BFT) rearing systems, nitrogen compounds, specially ammonia and nitrite, have to be controlled by microbial pathways, mainly through the activity of heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic bacteria. The objective of this work was to assess different water preparation strategies (heterotrophic, chemoautotrophic and mature) in BFT system for nursery of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). A 35-day study was conducted with post-larvae shrimp (0.08 g) stocked in twelve 300 L tanks at a stocking density of 2000 shrimp m−3. The water preparation strategies for shrimp rearing that were evaluated in this study included: i) Heterotrophic treatment, where the water received sugar as a carbon source; ii) Chemoautotroph treatment, where ammonium and nitrite salts were added to the water; and iii) Mature treatment, which was created by the addition of a significant amount of water containing mature biofloc from another established BFT system. In both mature and chemoautotrophic treatments, the nitrification process was able to keep toxic nitrogen compounds (ammonia and nitrite) at low levels without the addition of carbohydrates. In contrast, heterotrophic system showed peaks of ammonia and nitrite during the rearing cycle, and the level of these compounds were found to be higher in this treatment (relative to the mature and chemoautotrophic treatments). The chemoautotrophic system exhibited a lower abundance of bacteria from the family Vibrionaceae in the beginning of the experiment compared to the heterotrophic and mature treatments. The combination of low Vibrionaceae abundance and good water quality resulted in improved growth performance in this treatment. These findings demonstrate the importance of manipulating the environment of BFT systems to induce an enrichment of nitrifying bacteria before stocking shrimp. We have also found that the addition of a carbon source to BFT systems is necessary only in emergency situations, when ammonia spikes need to be controlled.  相似文献

This study evaluated different artificial substrates during pre-nursery of Pacific white shrimp in a biofloc system. Post-larvae (PL 5–80 PL L−1) were raised in 60 L tanks filled with 52 L of chlorinated seawater (35‰) and 6 L of the microalga Chaetoceros muelleri. Four treatments were performed, including control (no artificial substrate), Bidim® (geotextile), mosquito net screen (2 mm mesh) and Needlona® (polyester fiber). The total surface area of artificial substrate comprised 100% of the tank area (0.89 m2). PLs were fed nine times a day using commercial feed. Molasses was added in all treatments four times a day at an average carbon:nitrogen ratio of 14.7:1. The experiment was carried out until the PLs reached PL20, and during this time, water quality, survival, weight gain and survival to salinity stress were all evaluated. Water quality parameters remained within the accepted levels for shrimp rearing, with the exception of total suspended solids (TSS) in mosquito net screen and control, which had the highest values (507 ± 5.50 mg L−1 and 565 ± 23.46 mg L−1, respectively). Using Needlona® as artificial substrate increased the survival rate (91 ± 11.6%) and reduced TSS (42%) when compared to the control. No significant differences were observed in final weight and survival to salinity stress. Among the different substrates, Needlona® was the most suitable for application in Pacific white shrimp prenursery in the biofloc system, essentially because it could maintain levels of solids suspended in water without the use of clarifiers or water exchange, resulting in higher survival.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted with three biofloc treatments and one control in triplicate in 500 L capacity indoor tanks. Biofloc tanks, filled with 350 L of water, were fed with sugarcane molasses (BFTS), tapioca flour (BFTT), wheat flour (BFTW) and clean water as control without biofloc and allowed to stand for 30 days. The postlarvae of Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) with an Average body weight of 0.15 ± 0.02 g were stocked at the rate of 130 PL m?2 and cultured for a period of 60 days fed with pelleted feed at the rate of 1.5% of biomass. The total suspended solids (TSS) level was maintained at around 500 mg L?1 in BFT tanks. The addition of carbohydrate significantly reduced the total ammonia‐N (TAN), nitrite‐N and nitrate‐N in water and it significantly increased the total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) population in the biofloc treatments. There was a significant difference in the final average body weight (8.49 ± 0.09 g) in the wheat flour treatment (BFTW) than those treatment and control group of the shrimp. Survival of the shrimps was not affected by the treatments and ranged between 82.02% and 90.3%. The proximate and chemical composition of biofloc and proximate composition of the shrimp was significantly different between the biofloc treatments and control. Tintinids, ciliates, copepods, cyanobacteria and nematodes were identified in all the biofloc treatments, nematodes being the most dominant group of organisms in the biofloc. It could be concluded that the use of wheat flour (BFTW) effectively enhanced the biofloc production and contributed towards better water quality which resulted in higher production of shrimp.  相似文献

Intensive recirculating aquaculture relies on biofilters to sustain satisfactory water quality in the system. Fluidized bed and immobilized cell technologies were used to remove ammonia from the water and maintain fish health. A high‐rate nitrifying fluidized bed biofilter combined with valveless filter was designed for use in a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). The suspended solids produced during fish culture could automatically be removed using a valveless filter. Natural porosity with fitting proportion, steady fluidization and expanding rate was chosen as the fluidized carrier. The technology of bacterial separation and cultivation was used. The immobilized Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R. palustris) produced through a biotechnologically embedding medium is suitable for fish and could help prevent diseases. Nitrification was promoted through the selective rearing of nitrobacteria in a fluidized bed biofilter. Water quality was improved using fluidized bed biofilter and immobilized R. palustris in the RAS. In addition, the proposed system was able to reduce costs. Maximum fish load was 45 ± 3 kg m?3 in the closed recirculating water fish culture system, and water use was reduced by 80–90%. The total ammonia nitrogen removal rate of the technology was 80–95%, and nitrite N removal rate was above 80%.  相似文献

Biofloc systems rely on microbial processes in the water column to recycle animal waste products, reducing the need for water exchange. These increases biofloc concentration in the water and some form of removal is needed. An experiment was carried out to evaluate two management practices to control biofloc in Litopenaeus vannamei culture. Six tanks (48 m3) were divided into two treatments: water exchange and solid settler. Shrimp were stocked at 164 shrimp m?2 and with 0.67 g of weight. After 61 days, shrimp under solid settler treatment demonstrated mean weight of 12.7 ± 0.5 g with survival of 73.8 ± 1.4%, and those under water exchange had a final weight of 10.1 ± 0.2 g and survival rate of 57.8 ± 11.1%. Total suspended solids did not differ between the treatments: 326.8 ± 24.9 mg L?1 for water exchange and 310.9 ± 25.3 mg L?1 for solid settlers. Settleable solids and productivity/respiration ratio was higher (P < 0.05) in water exchange treatment, indicating differences in physical and biological characteristics of bioflocs. Solids removal method influenced the water use, in which 1150 ± 249 L of water was necessary to produce one kilogram of shrimp using water exchange strategy, and 631 ± 25 L kg?1 with the use of settlers. Our results indicate that continuous operation of settlers can reduce variability in solids characteristics and water quality variables such as ammonia. Both strategies are efficient in controlling biofloc concentrations of the water; however, settlers can reduce water use and improve shrimp production.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of different quantities of artificial substrate on water quality and the performance of Litopenaeus vannamei in an integrated biofilm-biofloc culture system. Thus, three treatments were performed: the control, the treatment without the addition of artificial substrate; T200, the treatment with a 200 % increase in the lateral area of the tanks using artificial substrates; and T400, the treatment with a 400 % increase in the lateral area of the tanks using artificial substrates. The study was conducted in nine 800 L tanks over 60 days. The animals were stocked at an initial density of 300 shrimp.m−2 (equivalent to 500 shrimp m-3), with an initial weight of 1.27 g (± 0.48). Ammonia concentrations did not differ significantly between treatments (p > 0.05). Increasing the amount of substrate from 200 % to 400 % did not cause significant differences in the nitrite concentrations between these treatments. However, in the control treatment, nitrite remained high (above 20 mg.L-1) for a long period, negatively affecting shrimp performance. Nitrate was lower in T400, indicating a more dynamic process in the nitrogen cycle when the quantity of artificial substrate increased. Weekly growth rates, final weight, survival, and productivity were higher in the treatments integrating biofilm and biofloc substrates and did not show significant differences between T200 and T400. The results demonstrate the importance of artificial substrates in enhancing the water quality in biofloc culture systems over the long term, mostly in terms of maintaining nitrite concentrations below levels toxic to L. vannamei. The performance of the shrimp and the improved water quality at the end of the study reflected the advantages provided by incorporating artificial substrates in shrimp biofloc culture.  相似文献

Immobilized Spirulina mat was co-cultured with Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) postlarvae for water quality control in a closed re-circulating system. During the culture period, the experimental Spirulina mat system showed total ammonia nitrogen and nitrate accumulation rates lower by 32.92 and 32.26 %, respectively, compared with the system without the mat. The water exchange rate in the system with the mat was comparatively reduced by 40 %. Moreover, survival rate, growth rate, and size (length) of the co-cultured shrimp larvae were greater than those of the control (P < 0.05): 72.3 ± 5.2 versus 61.3 ± 4.4 %; 0.55 versus 0.44 mm day?1; and 9.8 ± 0.5 versus 8.7 ± 0.3 mm, respectively. The most frequently observed microbes by PCR-DGGE, either with or without Spirulina mats, were species related to classes γ-, α-, and β- of Proteobacteria (95–98 % similarity), i.e., Nitrosomonas marina, Pseudomonas sp. ITRI66, Fusobacterium ulcerans, and Exiguobacterium arabatum, and species related to Bacteriodetes, i.e., uncultured Flavobacteriales (with a similarity of 96 %). However, species related to Nitrobacter winogradskyi and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were present only when the mats were applied, suggesting a mutualistic role in the aquaculture system. These bacterial communities, in cooperation with Spirulina sp., could enhance the shrimp response against disease, as well as growth and survival rates, and also improve the shrimp culturing water quality.  相似文献

Increasing feeding rates may provide an increase in production, thus nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter will also increase. These nutrients promote a greater oxygen demand and concentrations of toxic metabolites which can lead to frequent problems with low dissolved oxygen and an abundance of blue‐green algae. Four feed management practices were evaluated among sixteen 0.1 ha ponds culturing Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Feeding treatments included hand feeding using the Standard Feeding Protocol (SFP), SFP plus 15% from 8 to 16 weeks, an automatic‐solar timer which fed SFP+15%, and an AQ1 acoustic demand feeder allowing up to 12 kg/day·pond based on shrimps feeding response. Samples were analysed at weeks 0, 4 and 8–16 for the following parameters: chlorophyll a, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite–nitrogen, nitrate–nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, total suspended solids, total suspended volatile solids, turbidity, conductivity, salinity and biological oxygen demand. Samples were collected and shipped overnight to Auburn, Alabama for off‐site analysis. On‐site water quality was also obtained at the farm. The AQ1 acoustic demand feeder produced the most shrimp with a yield of 4,568 kg/ha; however, the AQ1 also had the highest total ammonia nitrogen and nitrite–nitrogen levels late in the growing season. The AQ1 feeder may be a viable, reduced labour and cost alternative for the shrimp commercial industry; however, such technologies must also be matched to the ability of the production system to process nutrients.  相似文献

Different water flows for solids removal in the Litopenaeus vannamei BFT system were evaluated. One control (no solids removal) and two treatments using different water flows, high (3945 L h?1—HF) and low (1750 L h?1—LF), were used with no water replenishment after each process, and the total dry weight of the solids was measured. L. vannamei (0.18 ± 0.06 g; 350 individuals m?2) were stocked in 35-m?3 tanks. For 17 weeks, the physical and chemical parameters were maintained within the recommended. To keep the total suspended solids concentrations at approximately 500–600 mg L?1, clarifying was performed. The average water volume flowed by clarifiers was significantly different (p < 0.05) between HF (205 ± 34 m3) and LF (114 ± 24 m3). There was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the final tank volume in HF (28.09 ± 0.92 m3) and LF (28.62 ± 1.38 m3) due to the clarifying. Before clarifying (initial sample) and at the end of experiment (final sample) were not significantly different (p > 0.05) for crude protein, moisture or ash. The crude lipid of the LF in the final period was significantly lower (p < 0.05) compared to others in both periods. The survival, productivity and food conversion ratio were significantly better (p < 0.05) in the HF and LF treatments compared to those of the control. The best shrimp performance was obtained with solids removal. The lower flow in the clarifier facilitated particle settling, allowing adjustment of the flow.  相似文献

Ongoing research in recirculation aquaculture focuses on evaluating and improving the purification potential of different types of filters. Algal Turf Scrubber (ATS) are special as they combine sedimentation and biofiltration. An ATS was subjected to high nutrient loads of catfish effluent to examine the effect of total suspended solids (TSS), sludge accumulation and nutrient loading rate on total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite and nitrate removal. Nutrient removal rates were not affected at TSS concentration of up to 0.08 g L?1 (P > 0.05). TAN removal rate was higher (0.656 ± 0.088 g m?² day?1 TAN) in young biofilm than (0.302 ± 0.098 g m?² day?1 TAN) in mature biofilm at loading rates of 3.81 and 3.76 g m?² day?1 TAN (P < 0.05), respectively, which were considered close to maximum loading. TAN removal increased with TAN loading, which increased with hydraulic loading rate. There was no significant difference in removal rate for both nitrite and nitrate between young and mature biofilms (P > 0.05). The ATS ably removed nitrogen at high rates from catfish effluent at high loading rates. ATS‐based nitrogen removal exhibits high potential for use with high feed loads in intensive aquaculture.  相似文献

AquaMats are high surface–area polymer filters whose use produces higher yields with reduced health risks for the aquaculture product. We used AquaMats in pilot-scale systems and in intensive commercial Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei production systems to stabilize and improve water quality by removing ammonia. In the pilot-scale systems, evaluation of the effects of temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on ammonia removal rate indicated that the surface total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) conversion rate (STR, mg TAN/m2-day) increased with increasing temperature and decreasing HRT. The highest STR of 319.8 mg TAN/m2-day was observed at a temperature of 30 °C and a HRT of 5 min. In the commercial shrimp production systems, ammonia levels were significantly greater in the control systems (without AquaMats) than in the treatment systems (with AquaMats) after 6 days (P < 0.05). Results suggested that eight 150 cm × 90 cm pieces of AquaMats (0.057 m2 surface area per m3 culture volume) were sufficient for promoting nitrification in this system. The growth rate of juvenile shrimp was most enhanced in treatment C (with 12 pieces of AquaMats, 0.085 m2/m3), which exhibited a significant decrease in ammonia.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted, in a dark room with controlled temperature (27.3–28.4 °C), to determine the acute toxicity of chlorine concentration to black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon fabicus) of sizes 0.02 g, 2.75 g, 8.47 g and 23.65 g. Toxicity tests on each of these shrimp sizes were run in triplicate in glass jars under static conditions without media renewal. The concentration of active chlorine that killed 50% of the shrimp of each size after 24‐h exposure (LC50‐24 h) was used as an indicator of acute toxicity. Chlorine concentrations applied in the shrimp toxicity test ranged from 2.0 to 14.5 mg L?1 in shrimp pond water. As the test water contained total suspended solids of 22.0–85.0 mg L?1 and total ammonia nitrogen of 0.18–0.40 mg L?1, the resultant concentrations of combined residual chlorine ranged from 0.6 to 3.5 mg L?1, which were the effective doses causing shrimp mortality. The test results showed that 24‐h LC50 for average shrimp size at 0.02, 2.75, 8.47 and 23.65 g occurred in water containing combined residual chlorine at a concentration of 0.91, 1.39, 1.74 and 1.98 mg L?1, for which the original application doses were 6.96, 2.05 11.50 and 13.34 mg L?1 respectively.  相似文献
