Tuber resistance toPhytophthora infestans was studied in relation to physiological age in tubers of the cultivars Atzimba, Katahdin, Kennebec, and Sebago. Resistance to race1,2,3,4 was evaluated in freshly harvested tubers, and tubers stored at 5 C for up to 215 days. Atzimba tubers were highly resistant when freshly harvested but became increasingly susceptible as they aged physiologically. Tubers of the other three cultivars were susceptible when freshly harvested and also when aged. Further, 57 tuber selections from among 11 crosses initially gave resistant reactions. However, after storage for six months at 5 C, 26.3% of the selections remained resistant, 22.8% were moderately resistant, 31.6% moderately susceptible, and 19.3% fully susceptible.  相似文献

The Somerset potato variety is a medium-maturing variety with attractive, round to oblong, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with shallow eyes. Its major use is expected to be as a chipping variety in areas where potatoes are stored for some length of time, since its sugar content is lower than most varieties during storage, and it can be chipped after six months in storage. Somerset does not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, and is immune to race 0 of Phytophthora infestans (late blight). Somerset is also moderately resistant to infection by Alternaria solani (early blight), and is only moderately susceptible to Verticillium wilt. Somerset is more susceptible to both common and acid scab than Superior, but less susceptible than Kennebec and Katahdin. It also has shown susceptibility to skinning and shatter bruise, but does not have a strong blackspot bruise reaction.  相似文献

Elkton is a medium to medium-late maturing potato variety with tan netted-skin, round-oval tubers, and white-flesh. Average marketable yields ranged from 76 % to 113 % of Atlantic and average specific gravities ranged from ?0.002 to ?0.006 less than Atlantic depending on location. Chip color processed directly from the field in southern locations or from storage in the northern locations is equivalent to Atlantic. Elkton is resistant to internal heat necrosis and hollow heart. Color and texture ratings of Elkton following baking, boiling and microwaving have been similar to Atlantic. Elkton is moderately resistant to early blight and Verticillium wilt; moderately susceptible to foliar late blight and susceptible to tuber late blight; moderately susceptible to powdery scab; and, susceptible to potato virus Y and potato virus S. Its reaction to common scab has been inconsistent. Plant Variety Protection has been requested for Elkton.  相似文献

Prestile is a late maturing potato variety with attractive, round to oblong, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with shallow eyes. Its major use is expected to be for tablestock in areas where Katahdin and Ontario are now grown. Prestile tubers are slow to sprout in storage and do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, but are quite susceptible to heat necrosis. This variety is immune to potato virus X, and is moderately resistant to common scab (Streptomyces scabies), verticillium wilt (Verticillium albo-atrum), and early blight (Alternaria solani). Prestile is susceptible to skinning and shatter bruise, and is difficult to kill, particularly when heavily fertilized.  相似文献

A regression analysis was used to develop a method to estimate the decrease in marketable tubers caused by late blight of potato (Phytophthora infestans), based on estimates of percentage loss in total tuber yield computed from a published method. The economic loss due to late blight in table stocks is the relative percentage marketable yield loss, calculated from the expression: {fx19-01} when total yield losses (in percentage) did not exceed 40%. A graphical method is presented as an alternative. Yield results from seven field experiments conducted in the Maritime Provinces of Canada during the period 1953 to 1971 were used in the study, where marketable tubers were defined as 2 1/4 inch or more in diameter.  相似文献

As part of a project to investigate the possibility that teratogenic factors are formed in potato tubers infected with the late blight fungus,Phytophthora infestans, a method was devised which allowed quick, efficient inoculation of large numbers of potato tubers. Tubers were placed in specially constructed trays, wounded by puncturing the periderm with flower “pin frogs”, and sprayed with a zoospore suspensionof P. infestans prepared from cultures grown on rye agar at 20C (68F) for 10 days. Approximately 95% of Katahdin and 93% of Russet Sebago tubers inoculated by this method exhibited typical late blight lesions after two weeks incubation at 20C, 80–90% RH. Eight tons of potatoes were processed in this manner.  相似文献

The Mainestay potato variety is high-yielding and late-maturing producing attractive, round, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with medium-shallow eyes. Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Mainestay appearance ratings are similar to those of Katahdin, and greening in Mainestay tubers is less than in Kennebec. Most boil and bake qualities were rated equal to Katahdin in at least half of the tests, and Mainestay usually has a low incidence of internal defects. However, purple streak, heat necrosis, vascular discoloration, and heat sprouts have been seen on occasion. Mainestay tubers do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, and have shown very little hollow heart or blackspot bruising. Mainestay is susceptible to common scab and acid scab, but moderately resistant to verticillium wilt (Verticillium, albo-atrum andV. dahliae), early blight (Alternaria solani), rhizoctonia (Rhizoctonia solani), dry rot (Fusarium sambucinum), and pink rot (Phytophthora erythroseptica). It is moderately susceptible to the common race of late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Mainestay tubers are slow to mature after vine kill, and additional time is required prior to harvest in order to allow for proper periderm development and to reduce storage losses.  相似文献

A graft transmissible disease of potato termed purple top roll is prevalent in several potato varieties grown in the hilly tracts of India. The common symptoms are rolling of the basal parts of younger leaves, sometimes accompanied by pink or purple pigmentation. The plants are stunted with profuse growth of axillary branches and aerial tubers. The losses in yield varied from 40 to 70%. Five to 20% of the tubers from diseased plants developed hairy sprouts. Tuber transmission of the pathogen varied from 6 to 33%, depending on the variety.Datura, tomato and white clover are among susceptible plants.N. rustica was tolerant or a symptomless carrier. Sunnhemp, Petunia andSesamum were immune to the pathogen, which was transmitted by the leaf hopper,O. albicinctus Distant but not byCuscuta spp. or by sap inoculation. Application of Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline and Antiamoebin resulted in remission of symptoms and increased tuber yields, indicating possible association of a mycoplasma-like organism.  相似文献

Seminole (FL282 or B4469-7) is a new potato variety, named and released by the Research and Farm Departments of Frito-Lay, Inc. Its medium-early tubers are round to oblong with smooth, light cream-buff skin color. The eyes are shallow and pink. It was selected on the Research Farm, Rhinelander, Wisconsin from family line B4469, one of 399 family lines received from the National Potato Breeding Program, Beltsville, Maryland. Tested for its reaction to Verticillium wilt, it was one of the most resistant among 1,190 seedlings. It proved superior to many named and numbered varieties in specific gravity and chip color. In Alabama, Seminole produced relatively high yields of tubers with unusually high specific gravity. Tests in Florida and North Carolina gave similar results. In the South, Seminole is usually 7–10 days earlier than Sebago, and produces higher yields of tubers with higher specific gravity. Unlike Sebago, its tubers separate readily from the vines preventing losses in mechanical harvesting.  相似文献

Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Taste panels rated St. Johns better than or equal to Katahdin in texture, color, mealiness, and flavor. St. Johns tubers do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, and are resistant to golden nematode, corky ringspot, hollow heart, and blackspot bruising. St. Johns is also moderately resistant to greening, shatter bruise, verticillium wilt, early blight, common scab, the common race of late blight, leafroll,Fusarium sambucinum (dry rot) andErwinia carotovora (soft rot), although some breakdown has been reported in commercial storages. Studies using Paraquat herbicide for early post-emergence control of broadleaved and grass weeds in Katahdin and Russet Burbank potatoes were conducted in Maine during four growing seasons. All rates and times of application of Paraquat gave good commercial control of grass and broadleaf weeds when compared to Premerge and Dowpon treatment as checks. Paraquat applied to Katahdins 2 weeks after ground crack reduced the yield of tubers but did not significantly affect specific gravity. Yield and specific gravity of Russet Burbank was reduced by Paraquat applied one and 2 weeks after ground crack. Paraquat can be used effectively for weed control in Katahdin up to one week after ground crack without crop damage. In Russet Burbank it appeared that application at ground crack was about as late as Paraquat could be applied without affecting yield or specific gravity of tubers.  相似文献

Sioux is a uniform round, red, slightly scaly russet variety of medium maturity. The variety is resistant to scab (Streptomyces scabies) and susceptible to Fusarium, Verticillium and late blight. In Nebraska, Sioux produces moderate to high yields, but higher yields of U.S. #1 potatoes when compared with the standard red table varieties Norland and Bounty. The specific gravity of Sioux is higher than that of the standard red table and white chipping varieties Haig, Platte and Kennebec. The variety is suitable for chipping and the production of frozen products. When grown as a late summer crop, Sioux is of good color and carries to market in better condition than the standard red varieties. In the 12 States in the North Central Regional Trials, Sioux was equal to the standard variety Red Pontiac in total yield and superior in yield of U.S. #1 potatoes. The specific gravity of Sioux was higher than that of Irish Cobbler or any of the other standard varieties. The yield of Sioux was as high and the specific gravity was higher than any of the standard varieties in Texas and Alabama trials.  相似文献

Coastal Russet (tested as B9596-2) is a clone with mid-season maturity that produces russet skin tubers that are long and slightly flattened. Tuber yields in the eastern portions of the United States have been considerably greater than for BelRus. Tubers are well-shaped, have shallow eyes, and are attractive in appearance. Tuber appearance and size make this cultivar very well suited for the tablestock market. It is not suitable for processing. Coastal Russet is highly resistant to tuber net necrosis caused by late current season infection with leafroll and is tolerant to common scab.  相似文献

The Quaggy Joe potato variety is high-yielding and medium to medium-late maturing with attractive, round-oval, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with medium-shallow pink eyes. Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Quaggy Joe is resistant to the potato leafroll virus, and is also moderately resistant to early blight (Alternaria solani), dry rot (Fusarium sambucinum), and soft rot (Erwinia carotovora subsp.carotovora). Pride is a new early white potato variety with smooth skin, shallow eyes, some scab resistance, and average specific gravity. Since it sets heavier than most varieties, it should be spaced farther apart in the row. Irrigation or adequate natural moisture are necessary for good size tubers and a satisfactory yield. Tubers of 11 clones ofSolanum tuberosum subsp.andigena (andigena) and 12 cultivars ofS. tuberosum subsp.tuberosum (tuberosum) were inoculated with water suspensions (5.5 × 104 5.5 × 105, 5.5 × 106 CFU/ml) ofErwinia chrysanthemi. Tubers were inoculated immediately after harvest and after 6 and 16 wk of storage at 4 and 23°C. Tuber rot incidence in andigena and tuberosum increased as inoculum concentration increased. Based on tuber rot severity, clones of andigena were classified as resistant, intermediate, or susceptible and cultivars of tuberosum were classified as intermediate or susceptible. Rot severity increased in all tubers stored at 4°C and in tubers of tuberosum stored at 23°C; rot did not increase in tubers of andigena stored at 23°C. Electrolyte leakage (EL), total sugars (TS), reducing sugars (RS), non-reducing sugars (NRS) and dry matter (DM) were determined in non-inoculated tubers. There was a significant positive correlation between the rate of EL, concentration of RS and tuber rot in andigena and tuberosum. Tuber rot and DM were negatively correlated in tubers of andigena; but they were not correlated in tuberosum. Clones of andigena with low EL, TS, RS, and high DM were resistant to tuber rot, and the incidence of tuber rot in these clones was much less influenced by temperature and length of storage. The influence of temperature and length of storage on susceptibility toE. chrysanthemi may be explained by increased cell membrane permeability; increased leakage of accumulated sugars in potatoes stored at 4°C could favor bacterial proliferation resulting in more disease.  相似文献

Coastal Chip is a medium-late maturing potato chipping variety suitable for production in locations along the east coast of the United States where heat stress reduces internal quality of tubers. It yields as well as the variety Atlantic but is not as susceptible to heat necrosis. The specific gravity of Coastal Chip averages approximately 0.010 less than Atlantic at locations subject to heat stress. In the seed producing areas of Maine it’s specific gravity averages approximately 0.005 less than that of Atlantic. Tubers are round, netted-skinned, and have moderately deep stem and bud ends. Chips from Coastal Chip are slightly lighter in color than those produced by Atlantic. In mid-Atlantic states where heat stress adversely affects chip color Coastal Chip processes into chips for a slightly longer period of time after harvest than does Atlantic. Glycoalkaloid content of Coastal Chip averaged 7.9 mg/100 g fresh tissue. Sunburned (green) tubers of Coastal Chip develop purple streaks that remain following processing. Hills must be properly covered to reduce losses. Coastal Chip is resistant to race A of the golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) and potato virus A. It is tolerant to Verticillium wilt, more susceptible to common scab and Rhizoctonia than Atlantic and susceptible to potato virus X.  相似文献

Belchip, a round white, widely adapted potato variety, especially useful for chips, was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Florida, New Jersey, and Maine, and the Virginia Truck and Ornamental Research Station, Norfolk in 1978. Belchip is immune to viruses A and X and tuber net necrosis caused by the leaf roll virus; highly resistant to race O of late blight and tuber necrosis caused by high soil temperatures; and has not shown unusual susceptibility to other major potato diseases. Maturity is about 5 days later than Atlantic. Tubers of Belchip are flat round in shape with shallow eyes. Tubers may be irregular in conformation under nitrogen deficiency and water stress. Total solids content ranges from 18 percent in Florida to 23 percent in Maine. Chips made from Belchip were lighter in color than those processed from varieties currently grown along the Atlantic Seaboard. Belchip reconditions readily in 2–3 weeks from 4°C (39°F) storage.  相似文献

Potato tubers became infected byAlternaria solani at the time of harvest. Infection occurred only on wounded tubers irrespective of their depth in the soil. The presence of free moisture on unwounded tubers did not increase the incidence of infection, and immature unwounded tubers were not susceptible. Tuber infections may be reduced by allowing tubers to fully mature before harvest or possibly, by applying chemicals to the soil surface.  相似文献
