The objective of this study was to determine whether differences in canopy structure and litter composition affect soil characteristics and microbial activity in oak versus mixed fir-beech stands. Mean litter biomass was greater in mixed fir-beech stands (51.9t ha−1) compared to oak stands (15.7t ha−1). Canopy leaf area was also significantly larger in mixed stands (1.96m2 m−2) than in oak stands (1.73m2 m−2). Soil organic carbon (C org) and moisture were greater in mixed fir-beech stands, probably as a result of increased cover. Soil microbial biomass carbon (C mic), nitrogen (N mic), and total soil nitrogen (N tot) increased slightly in the mixed stand, although this difference was not significant. Overall, mixed stands showed a higher mean C org/N tot ratio (22.73) compared to oak stands (16.39), indicating relatively low rate of carbon mineralization. In addition, the percentage of organic C present as C mic in the surface soil decreased from 3.17% in the oak stand to 2.26% in the mixed stand, suggesting that fir-beech litter may be less suitable as a microbial substrate than oak litter.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that carbon (C) mineralization in saline or sodic soils is affected by various factors including organic C content, salt concentration and water content in saline soils and soil structure in sodic soils, but there is little information about which soil properties control carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from saline-sodic soils. In this study, eight field-collected saline–sodic soils, varying in electrical conductivity (ECe, a measure of salinity, ranging from 3 to 262 dS m−1) and sodium adsorption ratio (SARe, a measure of sodicity, ranging from 11 to 62), were left unamended or amended with mature wheat or vetch residues (2% w/w). Carbon dioxide release was measured over 42 days at constant temperature and soil water content. Cumulative respiration expressed per gram SOC increased in the following order: unamended soil<soil amended with wheat residues (C/N ratio 122)<soil with vetch residue (C/N ratio 18). Cumulative respiration was significantly (p < 0.05) negatively correlated with ECe but not with SARe. Our results show that the response to ECe and SARe of the microbial community activated by addition of organic C does not differ from that of the less active microbial community in unamended soils and that salinity is the main influential factor for C mineralization in saline–sodic soils.  相似文献

We studied the effects of maize residue application on some life-cycle parameters of the earthworm Aporrectodea trapezoides in saline agricultural soils with electrical conductivity (EC) ranging from 1.58 to 7.35 dS m−1. This experiment was carried out under controlled laboratory conditions for 150 days. Results showed that soil salinity significantly affected the growth and reproduction of earthworms, decreasing survival, numbers and mean fresh weights of adults, juveniles and cocoons. Maize residue application gave a greater survival of earthworms at all salinity levels, but the differences were only significant at an EC of 7.35 dS m−1, although the mean weight of adult earthworms was significantly increased by maize residue application at all salinity levels. At an EC of 1.58 dS m−1 and 3.35 dS m−1, the application of maize residues gave significantly higher numbers of cocoons and juveniles, but in soils with 5.26 dS m−1 and 7.35 dS m−1 earthworms did not produce any cocoons over the experimental period, irrespective of maize residue application. These results indicated that maize residue application alleviated the negative effects of soil salinity on the growth and reproduction of A. trapezoides up to 3.35 dS m−1, above which maize residues only increased the growth but not on the reproduction of earthworms.  相似文献

Little information is available about the effects of cover crops on soil labile organic carbon (C), especially in Australia. In this study, two cover crop species, i.e., wheat and Saia oat, were broadcast-seeded in May 2009 and then crop biomass was crimp-rolled onto the soil surface at anthesis in October 2009 in southeastern Australia. Soil and crop residue samples were taken in December 2009 to investigate the short-term effects of cover crops on soil pH, moisture, NH4+–N, NO3–N, soluble organic C and nitrogen (N), total organic C and N, and C mineralization in comparison with a nil-crop control (CK). The soil is a Chromic Luvisol according to the FAO classification with 48.4 ± 2.2% sand, 19.5 ± 2.1% silt, and 32.1 ± 2.1% clay. An exponential model fitting was employed to assess soil potentially labile organic C (C 0) and easily decomposable organic C for all treatments based on 46-day incubations. The results showed that crop residue biomass significantly decreased over the course of 2-month decomposition. The cover crop treatments had significantly higher soil pH, soluble organic C and N, cumulative CO2–C, C 0, and easily decomposable organic C, but significantly lower NO3–N than the CK. However, no significant differences were found in soil moisture, NH4+–N, and total organic C and N contents among the treatments. Our results indicated that the short-term cover crops increased soil labile organic C pools, which might have implications for local agricultural ecosystem managements in this region.  相似文献

Since swine wastewater is used by farmers for soil fertilization, evaluation of toxic compounds or micro-contaminants of separate streams is required. This paper uses the toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure for the physicochemical and ecotoxicological characterization of swine wastewater. To distinguish the most important toxic compounds, a physicochemical characterization and phase I-TIE procedure were performed. The acute toxic effect of swine wastewater and treated fractions (phase II-TIE) were evaluated using Daphnia magna determining 48-h LC50. Results show a high level of conductivity (23.5 μS cm−1), which is explained as due to the concentration of ions, such as ammonium (NH4+–N 1.6 g L−1), sulfate (SO42− 397.3 mg L−1), and chlorine (Cl 1,230.0 mg L−1). The acute toxicity of the swine wastewater was evaluated on D. magna (48-h LC50 = 3.4%). Results of the different water treatments indicate that anionic exchange treatments could reduce 22.5% of swine wastewater’s acute toxicity by reducing chlorine (to around 51%) and conductivity (8.5%). On the other hand, cationic exchange treatment increased acute toxicity on D. magna (% RT = −624.4%), by reducing NH4+–N (around 100%) and total nitrogen (95.5%). This finding suggests that part of the toxicity comes from anionic compounds, such as chlorine.  相似文献

Water quantity and quality were monitored for 3 years in a 360-m-long wetland with riparian fences and plants in a pastoral dairy farming catchment. Concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and Escherichia coli were 210–75,200 g N m−3, 12–58,200 g P m−3 and 2–20,000 most probable number (MPN)/100 ml, respectively. Average retentions (±standard error) for the wetland over 3 years were 5 ± 1%, 93 ± 13% and 65 ± 9% for TN, TP and E. coli, respectively. Retentions for nitrate–N, ammonium–N, filterable reactive P and particulate C were respectively −29 ± 5%, 32 ± 10%, −53 ± 24% and 96 ± 19%. Aerobic conditions within the wetland supported nitrification but not denitrification and it is likely that there was a high conversion rate from dissolved inputs of N and P in groundwater, to particulate N and P and refractory dissolved forms in the wetland. The wetland was notable for its capacity to promote the formation of particulate forms and retain them or to provide conditions suitable for retention (e.g. binding of phosphate to cations). Nitrogen retention was generally low because about 60% was in dissolved forms (DON and NOX–N) that were not readily trapped or removed. Specific yields for N, P and E. coli were c. 10–11 kg N ha−1 year−1, 0.2 kg P ha−1 year−1 and ≤109 MPN ha−1 year−1, respectively, and generally much less than ranges for typical dairy pasture catchments in New Zealand. Further mitigation of catchment runoff losses might be achieved if the upland wetland was coupled with a downslope wetland in which anoxic conditions would promote denitrification.  相似文献

Salinity toxicity is a worldwide agricultural and eco-environmental problem. The intent of this study was to determine the salt tolerance of Piriformospora indica and strains of Azospirillum, isolated from non-saline and saline soil, as well as to determine their affect on the tolerance of wheat to soil salinity. In this study, an experiment was conducted to investigate the salt stress tolerance abilities of the endophytic fungi, P. indica, and Azospirillum strains, isolated from non-saline and saline soil, at five NaCl levels (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mol L?1). Additionally, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to test the effects of these selected microorganisms under increasing salinity levels on seedling growth, solute accumulation (proline and sugars), and photosynthetic pigments (Chl a, b, ab) of seedling wheat. Azospirillum strains were isolated in Iran from the root of field-grown maize from non-saline soil with an EC = 0.7 dS m?1 and from saline soil with an EC = 4.7 dS m?1. Plants were irrigated with non-saline water–tap water with an electrical conductivity water (ECw) value of 0.2 dS m?1, as well as low, moderate and severe saline water-irrigation with saline water with an ECw of 4 dS m?1, 8 dS m?1 and 12 dS m?1, respectively. The upper threshold of P. indica salinity tolerance was 0.4 mol L?1 NaCl in both liquid and solid broth medium. The upper thresholds of the salt adapted and non-adapted Azospirillum strains were 0.2 and 0.4 mol L?1 NaCl, respectively. The results indicated a positive influence of the organisms on salinity tolerance, more with the saline-adapted Azospirillum strains than the non-adapted strains. P. indica was more effective than the Azospirillum strains. These results could be related to a better water status, higher photosynthetic pigment contents and proline accumulation in wheat seedlings inoculated with P. indica. The benefits of both isolates and P. indica depended on two factors: water salinity and growth stage of the host plant. Inoculation with the two isolates increased salinity tolerance of wheat plants; the saline-adapted Azospirillum strains showed better performance with respect to improved fresh and dry weights at 80 and 100 days after sowing under both non-saline and saline conditions. When compared to plants inoculated with non-saline-adapted Azospirillum strains, those inoculated with adapted Azospirillum strains had much better performance with respect to the presence of photosynthetic pigment (Chl a, b and ab) and proline accumulation. Overall, these results indicate that the symbiotic association between P. indica fungus and wheat plants improved wheat growth, regardless of the salinity. It is concluded that the mechanisms for protecting plants from the detrimental effects of salinity by P. indica fungus and Azospirillum strains may differ in their salinity tolerance and influence the uptake of water, photosynthetic pigment contents and proline accumulation in wheat seedlings.  相似文献

Labile fractions of soil organic C (SOC) can respond rapidly to changes in C supply and are considered to be important indicators of soil quality. An attempt is made in this paper to investigate into the dynamics of total organic C (C tot), oxidisable organic C (C oc), very labile C (C frac 1), labile C (C frac 2), less labile C (C frac 3), non-labile C (C frac 4), microbial biomass C (C mic), mineralizable C (C min) and particulate organic C (C p) in relation to the system productivity of a 20-year-old rice (Oryza sativa L)–berseem (Trifolium alexandrium L) cropping system with different management strategies [no fertilization, only NPK and NPK + FYM (farmyard manure) applied in different seasons] in the hot humid, subtropics of India. Cultivation over the years caused a net decrease, while balanced fertilization with NPK maintained the SOC. About 62% of the C applied as FYM was stabilized into SOC. The passive pool (C frac 3 + C frac 4) constituted about 55% of the C tot. A larger proportion (63%) of applied C was stabilized in the passive pool of SOC. Of the analysed pools, C frac 1, C mic, C p and C min were influenced most by the treatments imposed and explained higher per cent variability in the yield of the crops.  相似文献

We compared, from 2004 through 2006, rates of soil–atmosphere CH4 exchange at permanently established sampling sites in a temperate forest exposed to ambient (control plots; ∼380 μL L−1) or elevated (ambient + 200 μL L−1) CO2 since August 1996. A total of 880 observations showed net atmospheric CH4 consumption (flux from the atmosphere to the soil) from all static chambers most of the time at rates varying from 0.02 mg m−2 day−1 to 4.5 mg m−2 day−1. However, we infrequently found net CH4 production (flux from the soil to the atmosphere) at lower rates, 0.01 mg m−2 day−1 to 0.08 mg m−2 day−1. For the entire study, the mean (±SEM) rate of net CH4 consumption in control plots was higher than the mean for CO2-enriched plots, 0.55 (0.03) versus 0.51 (0.03) mg m−2 day−1. Annual rates of 184, 196, and 197 mg m−2 for net CH4 consumption at control plots during the three calendar years of this study were 19, 10, and 8% higher than comparable values for CO2 enriched plots. Differences between treatments were significant in 2004 and 2005 and nearly significant in 2006. Volumetric soil water content was consistently higher at CO2-enriched sites and a mixed-effects model identified a significant soil moisture x CO2 interaction on net atmospheric CH4 consumption. Increased soil moisture at CO2-enriched sites likely increases diffusional resistance of surface soils and the frequency of anaerobic microsites supporting methanogenesis, resulting in reduced rates of net atmospheric CH4 consumption. Our study extends our observations of reduced net atmospheric CH4 consumption at CO2-enriched plots to nearly five continuous years, suggesting that this is likely a sustained negative feedback to increasing atmospheric CO2 at this site.  相似文献

In industrial areas, heavy metals may accumulate in forest soil organic horizons, affecting soil microorganisms and causing changes in the chemical composition of the accumulated organic matter. The objectives of this study were to test the ability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to detect heavy metal effects on the chemical composition of forest soil O horizons and to test whether NIRS may be used to quantitatively determine total and exchangeable concentrations of Zn and Pb (Znt, Pbt, Znex, Pbex) and other chemical and microbial properties in forest soil O horizons polluted with heavy metals. The samples of O horizons (n = 79) were analyzed for organic C (Corg), total N and S (Nt, St), Znt, Pbt, Znex, Pbex, basal respiration (BR), microbial biomass (Cmic) and Cmic-to-Corg ratio. Spectra of the samples were recorded in the Vis-NIR range (400–2,500 nm). To detect heavy-metal-induced changes in the chemical composition of O horizons principal components (PC1–PC7) based on the spectral data were regressed against Znt + Pbt values. A modified partial least squares method was used to develop calibration models for prediction of various chemical and microbial properties of the samples from their spectra. Regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between PC3 and PC5 (r = −0.27 and −0.34, respectively) and Znt + Pbt values, indicating an effect of heavy metal pollution on the spectral properties of the O horizons and thus on their chemical composition. For quantitative estimations, the best calibration model was obtained for Corg-to-Nt ratio (r = 0.98). The models for Corg, Nt, and microbial properties were satisfactory but less accurate. NIRS failed to accurately predict St, Corg-to-St, Znt, Pbt, Znex, and Pbex.  相似文献

Crop residues with high C/N ratio immobilize N released during decomposition in soil, thus reducing N losses through leaching, denitrification, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted for 84 days under controlled conditions (24°C and moisture content 55% of water-holding capacity) to study the influence of sugarcane, maize, sorghum, cotton and lucerne residues, and mineral N addition, on N mineralization–immobilization and N2O emission. Residues were added at the rate of 3 t C ha−1 to soil with, and without, 150 kg urea N ha−1. The addition of sugarcane, maize, and sorghum residues without N fertilizer resulted in a significant immobilization of soil N. Amended soil had significantly (P < 0.05) lower NO3–N, which reached minimum values of 2.8 mg N kg−1 for sugarcane (at day 28), 10.3 mg N kg−1 for maize (day 7), and 5.9 mg N kg−1 for sorghum (day 7), compared to 22.7 mg N kg−1 for the unamended soil (day 7). During 84 days of incubation, the total mineral N in the residues + N treatments were decreased by 45 mg N kg−1 in sugarcane, 34 mg kg−1 in maize, 29 mg kg−1 in sorghum, and 16 mg kg−1 in cotton amended soil compared to soil + N fertilizer, although soil NO3–N increased by 7 mg kg−1 in lucerne amended soil. The addition of residues also significantly increased amended soil microbial biomass C and N. Maximum emissions of N2O from crop residue amended soils occurred in the first 4–5 days of incubation. Overall, after 84 days of incubation, the cumulative N2O emission was 25% lower with cotton + N fertilizer, compared to soil + N fertilizer. The cumulative N2O emission was significantly and positively correlated with NO3–N (r = 0.92, P < 0.01) and total mineral N (r = 0.93, P < 0.01) after 84 days of incubation, and had a weak but significant positive correlation with cumulative CO2 in the first 3 and 5 days of incubation (r = 0.59, P < 0.05).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of plant growth on soil microbial biomass C (Cmic) and soil enzyme activities. In a pot experiment using spring barley and sugar beet, we investigated the response of Cmic, hot water extractable C and N fractions (Chwe, Nhwe), and enzyme activities involved in C, N and P cycling in a loess-derived Chernozem from Bad Lauchstädt (Central Germany). The study site has been receiving the same fertilisation treatments for 100 years. The soil originated from plots fertilised with 15 t ha−1 farmyard manure (FYM) year−1 + mineral fertiliser (NPK), or 15 t ha−1 FYM year−1, or NPK or from an unfertilised control. Pots were sampled monthly, and alkaline phosphatase- (AP), β-glucosidase- and protease-activities were analysed. At the beginning and the end of study, levels of Cmic, Chwe and Nhwe were also measured. All three enzyme activities and Cmic were significantly and positively correlated with Corg and Chwe. Results suggest that the enzyme activities measured originated mostly from microorganisms and that Chwe is an important C source for soil microorganisms. β-Glucosidase and AP activities were higher in summer months than at other times.  The effect of wildfire on soil microbes and extractable C (Cext) and N (Next) changed with respect to the time from burning and soil depth. Initially, microbial biomass C (Cmic) and N (Nmic) were drastically reduced in the soil surface layer (0–5 cm) and reduced by 50% in the subsurface (5–10 cm), whereas Cext increased by 62% in the surface layer and did not significantly change in the subsurface. These parameters were affected for the following 4 years, during which the average reductions in the soil surface and subsurface layers were, respectively, 60% and 50% for Cmic, 70% and 45% for Nmic, 60% and 40% for the ratio Cmic: organic C (Corg) and 70% and 30% for the ratio Nmic: total N (Ntot), while for Cext the surface layer was the only zone consistently affected and Cext decreased by up to 59%. Immediately after a fire, the Cext : Corg ratio increased by 3.5-fold and 2-fold in the surface and subsurface layers, respectively; thereafter for 2 years, it decreased in the surface layer (by up to 45%) while the effect on the subsurface layer was not consistent. The effect of burning on Next lasted 1 year, in which Next increased by up to 7- and 3-fold in the surface and subsurface layers, respectively, while the average Next : Ntot ratio doubled in the surface layer and increased by 34% in the subsurface. During the time in which each parameter was affected by burning, the soil factor explained a high percentage of variance in the fluctuations of Cmic, Nmic, Cmic : Corg and Nmic : Ntot, while those of Next and Next : Ntot, but not those of Cext and Cext : Corg depended on both the soil and its depth. In the burned soils similar patterns of response were found between the following parameters listed in pairs: Cmic and Nmic; Cmic : Corg and Nmic : Ntot; Cext and Next; and Cext : Corg and Next : Ntot. However, after the fire relationships found previously between the parameters studied and many other soils properties were either no longer evident, or were inverted. Although the addition of cellulose to the burned soil favoured fungal mycelium development and increased Cmic and Cext contents, the negative effect of burning on the microbial biomass and the Cext was not counteracted even under incubation conditions suitable for both microbial growth and C mineralization. Soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen as affected by cropping systems   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
 The impacts of crop rotations and N fertilization on microbial biomass C (Cmic) and N (Nmic) were studied in soils of two long-term field experiments initiated in 1978 at the Northeast Research Center (NERC) and in 1954 at the Clarion-Webster Research Center (CWRC), both in Iowa. Surface soil samples were taken in 1996 and 1997 from plots of corn (Zea mays L.), soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), oats (Avena sativa L.), or meadow (alfalfa) (Medicago sativa L.) that had received 0 or 180 kg N ha–1 before corn and an annual application of 20 kg P and 56 kg K ha–1. The Cmic and Nmic values were determined by the chloroform-fumigation-extraction method and the chloroform-fumigation-incubation method, respectively. The Cmic and Nmic values were significantly affected (P<0.05) by crop rotation and plant cover at time of sampling, but not by N fertilization. In general, the highest Cmic and Nmic contents were found in the multicropping systems (4-year rotations) taken in oats or meadow plots, and the lowest values were found in continuous corn and soybean systems. On average, Cmic made up about 1.0% of the organic C (Corg), and Nmic contributed about 2.4% of the total N (Ntot) in soils at both sites and years of sampling. The Cmic values were significantly correlated with Corg contents (r≥0.41**), whereas the relationship between Cmic and Ntot was significant (r≤0.53***) only for the samples taken in 1996 at the NERC site. The Cmic : Nmic ratios were, on average, 4.3 and 6.4 in 1996, and 7.6 and 11.4 in 1997 at the NERC and CWRC sites, respectively. Crop rotation significantly (P<0.05) affected this ratio only at the NERC site, and N fertilization showed no effect at either site. In general, multicropping systems resulted in greater Cmic : Corg (1.1%) and Nmic : Ntot (2.6%) ratios than monocropping systems (0.8% and 2.1%, respectively). Received: 9 February 1999  相似文献

 The effects on soil condition of increasing periods under intensive cultivation for vegetable production on a Typic Haplohumult were compared with those of pastoral management using soil biological, physical and chemical indices of soil quality. The majority of the soils studied had reasonably high pH, exchangeable cation and extractable P levels reflecting the high fertilizer rates applied to dairy pasture and more particularly vegetable-producing soils. Soil organic C (Corg) content under long-term pasture (>60 years) was in the range of 55 g C kg–1 to 65 g C kg–1. With increasing periods under vegetable production soil organic matter declined until a new equilibrium level was attained at about 15–20 g C kg–1 after 60–80 years. The loss of soil organic matter resulted in a linear decline in microbial biomass C (Cmic) and basal respiratory rate. The microbial quotient (Cmic/Corg) decreased from 2.3% to 1.1% as soil organic matter content declined from 65 g C kg–1 to 15 g C kg–1 but the microbial metabolic quotient (basal respiration/Cmic ratio) remained unaffected. With decreasing soil organic matter content, the decline in arginine ammonification rate, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity, earthworm numbers, soil aggregate stability and total clod porosity was curvilinear and little affected until soil organic C content fell below about 45 g C kg–1. Soils with an organic C content above 45 g C kg–1 had been under pasture for at least 30 years. At the same Corg content, soil biological activity and soil physical conditions were markedly improved when soils were under grass rather than vegetables. It was concluded that for soils under continuous vegetable production, practices that add organic residues to the soil should be promoted and that extending routine soil testing procedures to include key physical and biological properties will be an important future step in promoting sustainable management practices in the area.  The effects of salt type and its concentration on nitrification, N mineralization and N2O emission were examined under two levels of moisture content in Yellow soil and Andosol samples as simulated to agriculture under arid/semi-arid conditions and under heavy application of fertilizer in a glass-house, respectively. The salt mixtures were composed of chlorides (NaCl and NH4Cl) or sulphates [Na2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4] and were added at various concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 M as in the soil solution). These salts were added to non-saline Yellow soil at different moisture contents (45 or 40 and 65% of maximum water-holding capacity; WHC) and their effects on the changes in mineral N (NH4 +-N and NO3 -N) concentration as well as N2O emission were examined periodically during laboratory incubation. We also measured urease activities to know the effect of salts on N mineralization. Furthermore, Ca(NO3)2 solution was added at various concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 M as in the soil solution) to a non-saline Andosol taken from the subsurface layer in a glass-house and incubated at different moisture contents (50% and 70% of WHC) to examine their effects on changes in mineral N. Nitrification was inhibited by high, but remained unaffected by low, salt concentrations. These phenomena were shown in both the model experiments. It was considered that the salinity level for inhibition of nitrification was an electric conductivity (1 : 5) of 1 dS m–1. This level was independent of the type of salts or soil, and was not affected by soil moisture content. The critical level of salts for urease activities was about 2 dS m–1. The emission rate of N2O was maximum at the beginning of the incubation period and stabilized at a low level after an initial peak. There was no significant difference in N2O emission among the treatments at different salt concentrations, while higher moisture level enhanced N2O emission remarkably.  A study of the effects of different qualities (fresh and composted) and rates (equivalent to 120, 240, and 360 kg N ha–1) of mustard meal application on wheat yields on humid tropical vertisol was started in 1990 at Ginchi Research Station in Ethiopia. After continuous wheat cropping for 7 years and without any further fertilisation, soil microbial parameters (basal respiration, microbial biomass-C and N, organic-C, and ecophysiological quotients) were studied during one growth period. After 7 years of application, mustard meal still exerted a significant positive effect on microbial biomass, basal respiration, organic-C, Cmic : Nmic ratio, and metabolic quotient (qCO2). Organic-C, qCO2 and Cmic : Nmic ratios were higher for the compost-amended plots than plots amended with fresh mustard meal. Basal respiration, Cmic, and Cmic : Nmic ratio showed a clear seasonality, but only in manured plots. The data indicate shifts in microbial community structure (from bacteria to fungi and from r to K strategists) and suggest positive medium-term effects of mustard meal on humid tropical vertisol biological qualities. Simple and rapid chemical indices of soil nitrogen (N)-supplying capacity are necessary for fertilizer recommendations. In this study, pot experiment involving rice, anaerobic incubation, and chemical analysis were conducted for paddy soils collected from nine locations in the Taihu Lake region of China. The paddy soils showed large variability in N-supplying capacity as indicated by the total N uptake (TNU) by rice plants in a pot experiment, which ranged from 639.7 to 1,046.2 mg N pot−1 at maturity stage, representing 5.8% of the total soil N on average. Anaerobic incubation for 3, 14, 28, and 112 days all resulted in a significant (P < 0.01) correlation between cumulative mineral NH4+-N and TNU, but generally better correlations were obtained with increasing incubation time. Soil organic C, total soil N, microbial C, and ultraviolet absorbance of NaHCO3 extract at 205 and 260 nm revealed no clear relationship with TNU or cumulative mineral NH4+-N. Soil C/N ratio, acid KMnO4-NH4+-N, alkaline KMnO4-NH4+-N, phosphate–borate buffer extractable NH4+-N (PB-NH4+-N), phosphate–borate buffer hydrolyzable NH4+-N (PBHYDR-NH4+-N) and hot KCl extractable NH4+-N (HKCl−NH4+-N) were all significantly (P < 0.05) related to TNU and cumulative mineral NH4+-N of long-term incubation (>28 days). However, the best chemical index of soil N-supplying capacity was the soil C/N ratio, which showed the highest correlation with TNU at maturity stage (R = −0.929, P < 0.001) and cumulative mineral NH4+-N (R = −0.971, P < 0.001). Acid KMnO4-NH4+-N plus native soil NH4+-N produced similar, but slightly worse predictions of soil N-supplying capacity than the soil C/N ratio.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from an apple orchard soil in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China were measured using static chambers from September 2007 to September 2008. In this study, three sites were selected at distance of 2.5 m (D 2.5), 1.5 m (D 1.5), and 0.5 m (D 0.5) from the apple tree row. Nitrous oxide fluxes followed seasonal pattern, with high N2O emission rates occurring in the hot-humid summer and low rates in the cold-dry winter. Pulses of N2O emissions occurred after nitrogen fertilizer application, summer rainfall events, and during freeze-thaw cycles. Annual average N2O emission rates were the highest at D 0.5 site (48.2 ± 39.9 μg N2O m−2 h−1), the lowest at D 2.5 site (31.9 ± 18.2 μg N2O m−2 h−1), and intermediate at D1.5 site (36.8 ± 32.2 μg N2O m−2 h−1), suggesting that N2O emissions from the apple orchard soil increased when the chamber location was closer to the apple tree row. This may be due to the fertilization close to roots in hot and humid season. Over one third (37.1%) of the annual N2O emission occurred in the summer. Annual N2O emissions from the apple orchard soil averaged to 3.22 kg N2O ha−1 year−1. Annual emission factor of the apple orchard from the applied fertilizer (uncorrected for background emission) was 0.658%. This value was nearly a half (53%) of the default value provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the application of synthetic fertilizers to cropland (1.25%). Therefore, the amount of N2O emissions from the semiarid apple orchard soil could be largely overestimated if no regional-specific factor is used.  相似文献

Temporal depositional rates are important in order to understand the production and occurrence of perchlorate (ClO4) as limited information exists regarding the impact of anthropogenic production or atmospheric pollution on ClO4 deposition. Perchlorate concentrations in discrete ice core samples from the Eclipse Icefield (Yukon Territory, Canada) and Upper Fremont Glacier (Wyoming, USA) were analyzed using ion chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to evaluate temporal changes in the deposition of ClO4 in North America. The ice core samples cover a time period from 1726 to 1993 and 1970 to 2002 for the Upper Fremont Glacier (UFG) and Eclipse ice cores, respectively. The average ClO4 concentration in the Eclipse ice core for the time period from 1970 to 1973 was 0.6 ± 0.3 ng L−1, with higher values of 2.3 ± 1.7 and 2.2 ± 2.0 ng L−1 for the periods 1982–1986 and 1999–2002, respectively. All pre-1980 ice core samples from the UFG had ClO4 concentrations <0.2 ng L−1, and the post-1980 samples ranged from <0.2 ng L−1 to a maximum of 2.6 ng L−1 for the year 1992. A significant positive correlation (R = 0.75, N = 15, p < 0.001) of ClO4 with SO42− was found for the annual UFG ice core layers and of ClO4 with SO42− and NO3 in sub-annual Eclipse ice samples (R > 0.3, N = 121, p < 0.002). The estimated yearly ClO4 depositional flux for the Eclipse ice core ranged from 0.6 (1970) to 4.7 μg m−2 year−1 (1982) and the UFG from <0.1 (pre-1980) to 1.4 μg m−2 year−1 (1992). There was no consistent seasonal variation in the ClO4 depositional flux for the Eclipse ice core, in contrast to a previous study on the Arctic region. The presence of ClO4 in these ice cores might correspond to an intermittent source such as volcanic eruptions and/or any anthropogenic forcing that may directly or indirectly aid in atmospheric ClO4 formation.  相似文献
