The aim of this study is to demonstrate the potential of integrating probabilistic sampling and estimation with the conventional technique referred to as forest inventory by compartments. The objective of this paper is to propose two strategies for the assessment of growing stock volume using two-phase sampling, namely: (i) relascope basal area estimation performed on first-phase sampling points followed by volume estimation performed on a sub-sample of points selected in the second phase; (ii) ocular evaluation of growing stock volume performed on first-phase sampling plots of fixed size followed by volume estimation performed on a sub-sample of plots selected in the second phase. The effectiveness of using the auxiliary information gathered in the first phase is assessed by comparing the double-expansion estimator of total volume which depends solely on the second-phase sample with the two-phase ratio estimator which instead calibrates the double-expansion estimator on the basis of first-phase information. Conservative estimators of sampling variances and confidence intervals are derived for both the estimators. As is usual in forest inventories, first-phase sampling is assumed to be performed on a systematic random grid while three different schemes are considered for drawing the second-phase sample: simple random sampling without replacement, stratified sampling and 3-P sampling. The performance of double-expansion and ratio estimators under the three schemes adopted in the second phase is empirically checked by means of a simulation study performed on a real compartment in a beech forest of Central Italy. Simulation results show that the use of auxiliary information generated in the first phase constitutes a very effective way of increasing the accuracy of volume estimation at the compartment level, with a moderate increase of fieldwork.  相似文献

A non-destructive sampling strategy for basic density, based on removing 12 mm bark-to-bark cores, was developed in E. globulus and E. nitens. Fifty trees of each species, aged 5 to 9 years, were sampled across a range of sites. Core samples were removed on both a north-south and an east-west axis from 6 fixed heights in the base of the tree (0.5 m, 0.7 m, …, 1.5 m). Whole-tree values were calculated from disc samples removed at eight percentage heights (0, 10, 20, …, 70%) and correlations between the cores and whole-tree values were used to determine the optimal sampling height. Core samples were found to be reliable predictors of whole-tree density, explaining between 84% and 89% of the variation between trees. Core sampling of E. globulus and E. nitens to estimate basic density of whole-trees and stands is feasible; cores from trees at all E. globulus sites gave high correlations with whole-tree values. For E. nitens, site differences were apparent, and it is recommended that a small destructive sampling program should be undertaken prior to commencing a major sampling program. Recommended optimal sampling heights are 1.1 m for E. globulus and 0.7 m for E. nitens. Core orientation was not important and density was not related to tree size. Six whole-tree samples or eight core samples are required for estimating the mean density of a stand at a specific site to an accuracy of ±20 kg m−3 with a 95% confidence interval. Background: Remote sensing-based inventories are essential in estimating forest cover in tropical and subtropical countries, where ground inventories cannot be performed periodically at a large scale owing to high costs and forest inaccessibility(e.g. REDD projects) and are mandatory for constructing historical records that can be used as forest cover baselines. Given the conditions of such inventories, the survey area is partitioned into a grid of imagery segments of pre-fixed size where the proportion of forest cover can be measured within segments using a combination of unsupervised(automated or semi-automated) classification of satellite imagery and manual(i.e. visual on-screen)enhancements. Because visual on-screen operations are time expensive procedures, manual classification can be performed only for a sample of imagery segments selected at a first stage, while forest cover within each selected segment is estimated at a second stage from a sample of pixels selected within the segment. Because forest cover data arising from unsupervised satellite imagery classification may be freely available(e.g. Landsat imagery)over the entire survey area(wall-to-wall data) and are likely to be good proxies of manually classified cover data(sample data), they can be adopted as suitable auxiliary information. Methods: The question is how to choose the sample areas where manual classification is carried out. We have investigated the efficiency of one-per-stratum stratified sampling for selecting segments and pixels, where to carry out manual classification and to determine the efficiency of the difference estimator for exploiting auxiliary information at the estimation level. The performance of this strategy is compared with simple random sampling without replacement. Results: Our results were obtained theoretically from three artificial populations constructed from the Landsat classification(forest/non forest) available at pixel level for a study area located in central Italy, assuming three levels of error rates of the unsupervised classification of satellite imagery. The exploitation of map data as auxiliary information in the difference estimator proves to be highly effective with respect to the Horvitz-Thompson estimator,in which no auxiliary information is exploited. The use of one-per-stratum stratified sampling provides relevant improvement with respect to the use of simple random sampling without replacement. Conclusions: The use of one-per-stratum stratified sampling with many imagery segments selected at the first stage and few pixels within at the second stage- jointly with a difference estimator- proves to be a suitable strategy to estimate forest cover by remote sensing-based inventories.  相似文献

Within-tree variation in kraft pulp yield, predicted using near infrared reflectance analysis, was studied in thirty trees of E. globulus and fifty trees of E. nitens to develop a non-destructive sampling strategy. Trees, aged 5 to 9 years, were sampled across a range of sites in southern Australia. Simulated core samples were removed at six fixed heights easily accessible from the ground (0.5, 0.7, ... 1.5 m) and at seven percentage heights (0, 20, 30, ... 70%). Whole-tree values, calculated from percentage height data, were correlated with the core data to determine the optimal sampling height. Core samples were found to be good predictors of whole-tree pulp yield for E. globulus, with simulated cores taken from the recommended sampling height (1.1 m) explaining more than 50% of variation in whole-tree pulp yield. Results for E. nitens were variable with large site differences apparent. On high quality sites, core samples from the recommended sampling height (0.9 m) were good predictors of whole-tree pulp yield, explaining around 60% of the variation. On poor quality sites, cores were poor predictors of whole-tree pulp yield. Radial orientation of cores was not important and predicted pulp yield was not related to tree size, basic density or fibre length. To estimate stand mean pulp yield to an accuracy of ±1% would require sampling 6 trees of E. globulus and 4 trees for E. nitens using either multiple discs or core samples. A single sampling height (1.1 m) is recommended for sampling for basic density, fibre length, fibre coarseness and predicted pulp yield in E. globulus. For E. nitens the recommended sampling height for basic density and fibre length is 0.7 m and 0.9 m is recommended for predicted pulp yield on good quality sites. Received 17 September 1998  相似文献

Experimental results were studied to determine the relationships between positioning precision of a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and forest type, antenna height, and season, and to clarify the relationship between sampling number and the convergence of positioning precision. Observation was carried out for 24 h. Mean circular area probability (CEP95) was 2.80 m for deciduous broadleaved trees, and 4.99 m for conifers. The mean CEP95 taken at 7 m height (3.14 m) was higher than that at 1 m height (3.92 m) at all sites. The mean CEP95 taken during the defoliation season (2.65 m) was slightly better than during the foliation season (2.96 m). There were significant differences between forest types (P < 0.001) and antenna heights (P < 0.05). Positioning precision was not noticeably improved if the sampling number was around ten or less. A sampling number of 100–1000 or more is required before substantial improvements can be expected. As long as high positioning precision is not required, it is acceptable to use 2D & 3D modes and relatively few samples to take measurements.  To establish a sampling procedure for estimating the density of bamboo galls induced by Aiolomorphus rhopaloides Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) in a stand of bamboo Phyllostachys heterocycla (Carr. Mitf.) (Monocotyledoneae: Gramineae), 5–12 bamboo culms were cut at random in late March of each year during 1998–2001 just before gall-maker emergence. The number of galls on the branches of each bamboo culm was counted. The spatial patterns of the galls on the culms in the stand and on the branches within each culm were measured by Iwao's patchiness regression. Galls were distributed contagiously both on culms and on branches. Current bamboo culms that emerged the previous summer did not require sampling because no galls were observed on them. Except for this, there was no difference in gall density on young and old culms, suggesting that it is not necessary to distinguish them. There were few (<4%) galls above 6 m height during the 4 years. There was no significant difference in gall density up to 4 m and above 4 m, suggesting that branches up to 4 m can be sampled with confidence. Kuno's two-stage sampling method at different precision levels showed that the number of culms to be sampled varied with gall density. For example, at mean density m = 1.0 per branch when the number of sampled branches per culm is 10, a total of 24 culms is required to estimate gall number at a precision level of D = 0.2, where D is the ratio of standard error to mean. Adaptive cluster sampling for estimation of deforestation rates   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
National estimates of deforestation rates may be based on a survey. Precise estimation requires an efficient design. When deforestation rates are low (<1%) large sample sizes are required with traditional sampling designs to meet a precision target. This study explores the efficiency of adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) for this estimation problem. The efficiency is assessed by simulated ACS sampling from 18,200 × 200 km populations with 78–10,742 deforestation polygons (DFP) of different shape and size and average 10-year deforestation rates between 0.2% and 1.0%. Each population is composed of four million square 1 ha population units (PU) in a regular grid. Relative root mean square errors (RMSE) of ACS were, depending on sample size, 30–50% lower than comparable errors with simple random sampling (SRS) designs. ACS achieves this advantage by adaptively adding PUs to an initial SRS sample of size n. Realized ACS sample sizes were, on average, twice the nominal size (n). Three measures of ACS efficiency indicated that the costs of adaptively increasing the sample size are critical for the effectiveness of ACS. Population effects were manifest in all estimators. Estimates of the abundance, size, and shape of DFPs will allow a prediction of these effects. Populations dominated by a few large DFPs were clearly unsuited for ACS. The performance of ACS relative to that of SRS was similar across plot sizes of 1, 10, and 40 ha. The general conclusion of this study is that the lower RMSE of ACS remains attractive when the average cost of adaptively adding a PU to the initial sample is low relative to the average cost of sampling a PU at random.  相似文献

A marine white rot isolate, Phlebia sp. MG-60, secreted lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP), and laccase under different sea salt incubation conditions. Its MnP production was strongly enhanced by adding 3% sea salts, and the MnP showed high tolerance to sea salts and NaCl. The crude enzyme secreted at 3% sea salt concentration by Phlebia sp. MG-60, in which the main component was MnP (cMnP), was then used to bleach unbleached hardwood kraft pulp (UKP) in vitro. The pulp was brightened 11 points by 4 U of cMnP, and the kappa number was decreased 6 points when only 0.5 mM H2O2 was added continuously. When 0.5 mM H2O2 (1.22 mg H2O2 /g pulp) was added at the initial bleaching, the pulp brightness increased 6 points with a dosage of 4 U of cMnP. When crude MnPs were employed to bleach UKP with organic-free model white-water instead of the Milli Q water usually used, the pulp was brightened 10 and 13 points by 4 and 20 U of cMnP, respectively, and 5 and 6 points by 4 and 20 U of MnP, respectively, of Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Within-tree variation in fibre length and coarseness was studied in fifty trees of E. globulus and E. nitens to develop a non-destructive sampling strategy. Trees, aged 5 to 9 years, were sampled across a range of sites in southern Australia. Simulated core samples were removed at six fixed heights easily accessible from the ground (0.5, 0.7, ... 1.5 m) and at eight percentage heights (0, 10, 20, ... 70%). Whole-tree values, calculated from percentage height data, were correlated with the core data to determine the optimal sampling height. Core samples were found to be reliable predictors of whole-tree fibre length, but results were variable for fibre coarseness. Simulated cores taken from the recommended sampling heights explained 87% and 71% of variation in whole-tree fibre length for E. globulus and E. nitens respectively and 54% and 45% of the variation in whole-tree fibre coarseness. Fibre length at all fixed heights showed good correlations with whole-tree values at all sites for E. globulus. For E. nitens the correlations were slightly lower and variable across sites. Results for fibre coarseness varied across sampling heights and sites for both species. The recommended sampling height for fibre length is 1.5 m for both species, whilst for fibre coarseness, the recommended sampling heights are 0.9 and 1.1 m for E. globulus, and 0.9 and 1.3 m for E. nitens. Radial orientation of cores was not important and neither fibre length nor coarseness were related to tree size or basic density. To estimate stand mean fibre length to an accuracy of ±5% would require sampling 9 whole trees or taking cores from 13 trees for E. globulus and 4 whole trees or cores from 8 trees for E. nitens. For estimating stand mean fibre coarseness, 10 whole trees of E. globulus and 7 whole trees are needed for E. nitens. Core sampling for stand mean coarseness would require more trees: 13 to 21 for E. globulus and 11 to 16 trees for E. nitens. Received 17 September 1998  相似文献

Biomass of a mature man-made forest in West Java, Indonesia, was estimated to evaluate the carbon sequestration potential of plantation forest in the humid tropics. Twenty plots, each 0.25 ha in area and containing one to six planted species over 40 years of age and with closed canopies, were selected. Trunk dry mass was estimated from trunk diameter, tree height, and bulk density. Maximum trunk diameter (122 cm) was observed in a 46-year-old Khaya grandifoliola C. DC. tree, and the tallest tree (51 m) was a 46-year-old Shorea selanica (DC.) Blume. The largest trunk biomass (911 Mg ha−1) was achieved in the plot composed of two Khaya spp. Among the plots composed of indigeneous Dipterocarpaceae species, the largest trunk biomass was 635 Mg ha−1. These trunk biomasses were larger than those reported from primary rainforests in Southeast Asia (e.g., 403 Mg ha−1 in East Kalimantan, 522 and 368 Mg ha−1 in Peninsular Malaysia). The large biomass in this forest suggests that, given favorable conditions, man-made forests can accumulate the quantities of atmospheric carbon that were lost by the logging of primary forests in the humid tropics.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies) was heated for 2–8 h in the temperature range 180–225 °C, under a steam atmosphere. The chemical analyses of the treated feedstock samples indicated that during heating (total mass loss 1.5–12.5% of the initial DS) carbohydrates (hemicelluloses and cellulose) were clearly more amenable to various degradation reactions than lignin. In addition, major water-soluble products released from the feedstock material during the treatments were classified into several compound groups and changes in the relative mass portion of these groups were monitored by GC during a separate experiment. Delignified hinoki wood and cellulose as well as hinoki and lauan woods were carbonized at 590°C for 1 h. The dielectric properties of these specimens were measured at 20°C in a frequency range of 20 Hz to 1 MHz. Inflection points in the dielectric constant (ε′) versus the logarithm of frequency (log f) curves as well as in the logarithm of the electric conductivity (log σ) versus log f curves for all specimens prepared were recognized. Peaks in the dielectric loss and the imaginary part of the complex conductivity versus the log f curves were detected in the frequency location corresponding to the inflection point in the ε′ and log σ versus log f curves. It was considered that this relaxation was responsible for the interfacial polarization observed in heterogeneous materials because no permanent dipoles existed in the specimens carbonized above 500°C. The Cole–Cole circular arc law was applied to account for this relaxation. Similar average relaxation times were obtained for all specimens. These results suggested that the observed relaxation was ascribed to interfacial polarization at microscopic levels in the cell walls.  相似文献

The aim of this inventory (acronym: INFOCARB) was to measure the organic carbon stored in the forest ecosystems of the Trento region (Provincia Autonoma di Trento, Northern Italy) in both above- and belowground pools, according to the Kyoto protocol and IPCC requirements. A total of 150 forest sampling points were selected on the entire regional area (6206 km2) with a statistical sampling approach, based on the timber volume as a proxy variable for a stratified sampling. Each sampling point was located with a GPS receiver and a 600 m2 circular plot was delimited around each point. Inside the plots, the biomass of trees, shrubs and herbaceous vegetation was measured, while litter was collected in systematically placed subplots. Topsoil (down to 30 cm depth) was sampled with the excavation method on three systematically located pits, to determine the organic carbon content, the bulk density and the volume occupied by stones and roots.  相似文献

Summary Two nonparametric statistical techniques are presented which allow the user to evaluate the effect of a treatment on an n-dimensional set of variables associated with forest products. The multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) are a broad category of permutation techniques based on a variety of distance functions. Earlier work on this subject has demonstrated that when the distance function is selected appropriately, one-dimensional MRPP represent a rational alternative to traditional comparative statistical analysis techniques, such as the Student's t-test (t-test). In the work presented herein, MRPP are broadened to include analyses on the effect of a treatment on data were containing multiple variables which may be correlated. These tests are a MRPP based on Euclidean distance (MRPP-E) and a MRPP motivated by Hotelling's T2 test (MRPP-H) which can account for the variance-covariance structure of the data. Four hundred eighteen data points representing the moduli of elasticity (MOE) and rupture (MOR) of eight foot-long (244 cm), nominal 2 × 4 inch2 (51 × 102 mm2), No. 2 grade, Douglas-fir, dimension lumber from seven growing regions in the western United States were selected for use in this study. Data were analyzed using one- and two-dimensional, classical, parametric techniques (i.e. t-test and Hotelling's T2 test) and the more intuitive and nonparametric MRPP in similar dimensions. The results indicated that the MOE demonstrated some degree of sensitivity to the growth region, while the MOR proved to be insensitive. Also, considerable differences in inference drawn regarding the presence of statistically significant differences between data sets existed as a function of the analytical test method used. The unique structure of the data encountered in this study showed that MRPP-E was insufficiently sensitive to the variance-covariance structure of the data. Visual examination of the data suggested that MRPP-H is more appropriate for the present data than MRPP-E. Received 7 October 1998  相似文献

Data from a Brazilian Inga/maize/bean alleycrop experiment are used to illustrate patterns of variation between and within crop rows and their possible effects in the determination of a sampling strategy. Three methods for the determination of sample sizes in agroforestry experiments are compared: the combined plant technique, the formula of Snedecor and Cochran and variance component estimation. Results show that variability in the edge rows was generally greater than variability in the inner rows and suggest three sampling strata – one for each of the two edge rows and the third for the inner rows. For all three sampling methods a sample size greater than ten plants per stratum per block gave little extra precision. Increasing the number of blocks improves precision and may permit a smaller sample size per row to achieve the same precision. The comparison of different methods of sample size determination shows that variance component estimation is the most flexible and efficient approach. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We analyzed the growth patterns of Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai trees in an old plantation (161 years old), where no silvicultural treatments (e.g., thinning) have been conducted since the initial planting. The analysis focused on understanding individual growth under a long-term self-thinning process, and the stand-level stemwood production at the mature stage was evaluated. Nine canopy-layer trees and one suppressed tree were used for the analysis of annual increments in stem diameters, heights, and stemwood volumes for a given past year using the ring-width data. Both the diameter (at basal portion) and height of all the canopy-layer trees increased at similar rates during the early stage (i.e., 60–70 years after planting); however, after this period, only the height growth rates declined sharply. The annual growth rates of stemwood volume also simultaneously leveled off at the stand age of 40–60 years. Subsequently, the patterns diverged conspicuously, e.g., the growth rates were maintained or increased in some individuals, while it gradually decreased in the case of others until the present year. The divergence of growth pattern was likely to be triggered by intertree competition at several decades after the onset of canopy closure. The current stemwood production of the sample trees, including the suppressed one, was positively correlated with certain size parameters such as stem diameter at breast height and sapwood area at a height of 4 m. Based on the diameter-base allometry, the total stand stemwood production was estimated to be about 12.8 m3 ha−1 year−1. This estimate was higher than those of some old natural T. dolabrata forests (2.0–8.6 m3 ha−1 year−1) that have been well managed by repetitive selection thinning. Furthermore, individual mean stemwood production of the study plantation (0.03 m3 tree−1 year−1) was within the range of these natural stands (0.01–0.05 m3 tree−1 year−1). These comparisons suggested that the old T. dolabrata plantation still maintained a relatively high stemwood production potential despite the absence of artificial controls of tree density in the past. In terms of timber production, this fact implied that a rather long rotation (>100 years) can be applicable in the management of T. dolabrata plantations.  相似文献

To estimate the importance of leaching of dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a pathway through which organic matter is supplied to stream ecosystems, we examined the amount of leachate over time and chemical properties of DOM leached from leaves in different conditions. The samples used were green leaves, yellow senescent leaves, and leaf litter of Salix gracilistyla Miq., which is the dominant riparian plant species in the middle reaches of rivers in western Japan. We analyzed dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total sugar, and polyphenol in the leachate of leaf samples collected from a fluvial bar in the middle reaches of the Ohtagawa River in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Considerable leaching of DOC from senescent leaves [37.3 mg g−1 dry weight (dw) leaf] and leaf litter (8.1 mg g−1 dw leaf) occurred within 24 h after immersion. In contrast, DOC leached from green leaves was negligible until 1 week after leaf immersion. Carbon loss of leaves by leaching within 24 h after leaf immersion was estimated to be less than 8%, suggesting that leaching of DOC from S. gracilistyla leaves is a minor pathway through which organic matter is supplied to stream ecosystems. DOM leached from the leaves included sugar and polyphenol, which were among the major chemical forms of DOM leached from the leaves (based on the molecular mass). In a laboratory experiment in which the difference in the stability of DOM between the chemical forms was examined, sugar decomposed more rapidly than polyphenol.  相似文献

We extend the well-known double sampling for stratification sampling scheme by cluster subsampling to a three-level design and present corresponding estimators based on the infinite population approach in the first phase. After stratification of the sample points (phase I), a second-phase sample is drawn independently among the first-phase points within each stratum. On level III, clusters are formed of those phase II points and a sample of clusters is finally drawn without replacement. We used the forest planning units compartment and subdistrict as clusters and moreover formed clusters with a heuristic for the vehicle routing problem. The precision of the new estimator was compared to that achieved with classical double sampling for stratification in a case study. The results indicate that the expected increase in sampling errors caused by clustering cannot be compensated by the reduced inventory costs under the conditions given in the case study.  相似文献
