In a field trial on Integrated Quality Control of finishing pigs we evaluated information written on Quality Information Cards (QUIC) for meat inspection purposes. These cards were sent with 3747 shipments of pigs going from the finishing herd to the slaughterhouse. Pig suppliers answered five questions dealing with health problems and the use of drugs during the finishing period. By comparing QUIC answers to recorded post-mortem abnormalities, we found that the information on the QUIC had some, albeit low, predictive value with respect to the abnormalities 'arthritis', 'condemned liver' and lung lesions. Shipments without a QUIC or with a faulty QUIC were considered 'suspect' because higher levels of abnormalities were found in these shipments. These results indicate the potential use of a QUIC.  相似文献

Summary

The ability of pig suppliers to separate pigs with abnormalities from pigs without abnormalities at the end of the finishing period was investigated Nineteen hundred and seventy‐eight pigs, delivered by 22 pig suppliers, were involved in the experiment The pigs were inspected on the farm by the pig supplier and separately, by a veterinary expert The animals were sent in 22 deliveries to one slaughterhouse. A veterinary meat inspector carried out the ante‐ and post‐mortem inspections. The results of the inspections were compared The measure of agreement, Cohen's Kappa (CK), indicated a poor (CK < 0.40) to fair (0.40 < CK < 0.75) agreement among the results of the different inspection procedures, depending on the abnormality under investigation. There was a fair to good agreement for the abnormality ‘tail lesion’ among all inspections. Some findings of the live animal, such as ‘straggler’, were associated with a wide range of post‐mortem abnormalities. It is concluded that preselection is possible and that the economic and practical feasibility of preselection should be investigated.  相似文献

Summary

Serological surveys of the prevalence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii were carried out amongst swine and cattle in the Netherlands. Data were analysed according to the different categories of animals. The results show very low seroprevalences of Toxoplasma gondii in finishing pigs (1.8%) and in fattening calves (1.2%). In sows and dairy cattle, respectively, seroprevalences of 30.9% and 27.9% respectively, were found, demonstrating clearly the environmental infection pressure and illustrating the importance of housing and management in establishing low infection rates.

Substantially different seroprevalences were found between dairy cattle sampled in the North and in the South of the Netherlands (13.1% and 42.6%, respectively).

The infection rates in the samples from finishing pigs, fattening calves, and dairy cattle demonstrate that seroprevalences in individual farms or herds may differ considerably. Investigation of the factors involved can be useful in determining the causes of infection and for developing measures with regard to prevention. The very low seroprevalences in finishing pigs and fattening calves indicate, however, that the production of toxoplasma‐free meat may be well within reach in modern husbandry.

Since farm animals easily are infected, serological screening of individual farms or herds for the absence of T. gondii infection, as a part of the Integrated Quality Control programme, can be helpful in determining the quality of livestock production and in developing certain standards of hygiene for individual farms.  相似文献

Summary

Fattening pigs are frequently contaminated with salmonella bacteria. In 1983 and 1984 some 40 pig fattening farms in the Dutch province of Gelderland were examined to test the hypothesis that acidic byproducts from the dairy industry could influence the degree of contamination in groups of fattening pigs. Clear differences were observed: first salmonella was found in a lower percentage of farms using whey as part of the feed mix (40%) than on farms using only water (80%). Of the farms on which salmonella bateria were demonstrated, the percentage of positive samples was lower for the ‘whey’ farms than for the ‘water’ farms (19.4% compared with 64.1%).  相似文献

Abstract

The objectives were to investigate the effects of genotype and level of concentrate on foraging activity and vegetation cover in an organic pasture-based system for growing-finishing pigs. A 44% reduction in the allowance of concentrate more than doubled the rooting activity. The effect of feeding strategy on grazing was less pronounced; this behaviour only tended to be more frequent in the pigs fed restrictedly compared to the pigs fed according to recommendations. There were no significant differences in rooting activity between genotypes; however, the ‘traditional’ genotype grazed significantly more than the ‘modern’ genotype. The vegetation cover declined significantly faster in the paddocks with restrictedly fed pigs than in the paddocks with pigs fed according to recommendations. A restriction in the allowance of concentrate is a valuable tool for stimulating rooting behaviour in integrated systems where the pigs’ rooting behaviour is considered a resource in relation to, for example, soil tillage.  相似文献

Urolithiasis in finishing pigs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Urolithiasis in sows and neonatal pigs is well-known, but information on its occurrence and impact in finishing pigs is sparse. This study reports three outbreaks of urolithiasis in finishing pigs. In one herd, no symptoms were observed, whereas in the other herds the presence of calculi caused obstruction of the urinary tract resulting in death. Using infra-red spectroscopy, the predominant mineral-type found in the uroliths was calcium carbonate (calcite). Only small amounts of calcium oxalate (< 1%) could be detected. A high urinary pH, small abnormalities in the mineral composition of the feed and insufficient drinking water were the most important risk factors identified. To prevent urolithiasis, it is important to ensure adequate water intake, to provide a balanced mineral diet, and to avoid urinary tract infections.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo assess the impact of preanaesthetic echocardiography on the subsequent intended anaesthetic management plan in cats with incidental clinical findings that may indicate cardiac disease.Study designClinical study involving cats undergoing echocardiography and subsequent anaesthesia.AnimalsA total of 40 client-owned cats.MethodsEchocardiography was performed in conscious cats and the information was used to plan anaesthesia or sedation. An information sheet including relevant history, temperament, body condition score, clinical examination findings, current medication and results of any relevant tests such as haematology, biochemistry or Doppler blood pressure measurement was sent to three specialist anaesthetists and virtual case management plans were designed for each cat in two steps: step 1) anaesthetists were unaware of echocardiography results; and step 2) anaesthetists were aware of echocardiography results. In the second step the anaesthetists documented any changes to their original management plan, as either ‘step-up’ or ‘step-down’.ResultsOf the 40 cats, 26 had murmurs, four had a gallop rhythm, four had both findings and six had other findings. Pathology of potential haemodynamic significance was found on echocardiography in 23 cats, 17 of which anaesthetists had correctly identified as having disease before echocardiography. A proportion of cats with murmurs were subsequently deemed to have no significant pathology after echocardiography. Echocardiography findings in these cases were: dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (DLVOTO) without hypertrophy; DLVOTO without hypertrophy + dynamic right ventricular outflow tract obstruction (DRVOTO); DRVOTO; valvular dysplasia; normal. In a median of 26/40 (range 16–38) of cases, the anaesthetic plan was changed after provision of further information; in 15/40 (8–20) cases, this was a ‘step-up’ in care and in eight/40 (6–23) it was a ‘step-down’ in care. In cases with atrial enlargement (left atrium to aortic ratio of >1.6) and deemed at risk of cardiac failure, alpha-2 agonist use changed considerably with availability of echocardiography findings.Conclusionand clinical relevance Where there are abnormal cardiac findings on clinical examination in cats, echocardiography is required to accurately assess anaesthetic risk . The availability of echocardiographic information positively influences anaesthetic management.  相似文献

This study aimed at gaining information on the presence of Salmonella in UK turkey hatcheries and possible epidemiological links between breeding farms, hatcheries and finishing farms. The presence of ciprofloxacin‐resistant E. coli in hatchery samples, as well as in faecal samples from farms, and trends in occurrence of resistance were also investigated. Over a 2 year‐period, four British turkey hatcheries were visited and intensively sampled for the presence of Salmonella and ciprofloxacin‐resistant E. coli. In two hatcheries, a link could be demonstrated between the presence of certain Salmonella serovars in the hatcheries and on breeding and finishing farms. Within the hatcheries, serovars linked to breeding farms were found more frequently in the poult processing and dispatch areas, whereas serovars identified as ‘resident hatchery contaminants’ were predominantly found inside the hatcher cabinets. Ciprofloxacin‐resistant isolates of S. Senftenberg were identified in one hatchery, which coincided with enrofloxacin treatment of some of the breeding flocks. Ciprofloxacin‐resistant E. coli was found in two hatcheries, and the majority of these isolates showed multidrug resistance.  相似文献

Abstract

Outdoor production on pasture is considered an option in organic pig production. The aim of the present trial was to study the influence of feeding strategies combining outdoor and indoor rearing on pig meat quality. The experiment was carried out with 245 pigs in 5 replicates, and commenced following weaning at day 52. Five treatments were compared: 1) pigs fed ad libitum and reared indoors with access to an outdoor concrete area (In-A); 2) pigs fed restrictively on pasture until 40 kg body weight and then kept indoors with access to an outdoor concrete area and fed ad libitum until slaughter (In-40A); 3) pigs fed restrictively on pasture until 80 kg body weight and then kept indoors with access to an outdoor concrete area and fed ad libitum until slaughter (In-80A); 4) pigs reared on pasture and fed restrictively during the whole period of growth (Out-R); and 5) pigs reared on pasture and fed ad libitum during the whole period of growth (Out-A). All pigs had free access to roughage (clover-grass silage/fresh clover grass). Restrictive feeding in the weight range from weaning to 40 kg body weight (In-40A) resulted in a reduced daily gain; however, following transfer to indoor facilities and ad libitum feeding these pigs compensated in growth and the overall daily gain did not differ from the In-A control pigs. Pigs fed restrictively from weaning to 80 kg body weight were unable to compensate completely following transfer to indoor facilities. Out-R pigs had the lowest overall daily gain, while In-A pigs and Out-A pigs had similar daily gain. Meat quality assessments were performed on longissimus dorsi (LD) samples from a subsample of 100 pigs (2 castrates and 2 female pigs from each treatment in each replicate). Compared to meat from either ad libitum treatments (In-A and Out-A), meat from Out-R and In-80A pigs was less red due to a lower pigmentation, and had a higher ratio of polyunsaturated:saturated fatty acids. In addition, Out-R female pigs had numerically (6–10 Newton) higher shear force than In-A and Out-A. Treatments did not affect the concentration of α-tocopherol of meat. Introducing a finishing period with free access to concentrates following 40 kg body weight until slaughter prevented the deterioration in meat quality. However, a finishing period following 80 kg body weight was not sufficient. In conclusion, ad libitum feeding in the organic production system gave superior meat quality compared to a restrictive feeding strategy. However, including a finishing period indoors with ad libitum feeding of concentrates may prevent the detrimental effect of restrictive feeding on meat quality.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of various feeding levels from weaning (day 28) to day 170 of age on growth, muscularity and technological meat quality in female pigs. From day 28 to day 90 of age (growing period) and from day 90 to day 170 of age (finishing period), the pigs were fed either ad libitum (A) or restrictively (R) in a 2 2 2 factorial design with treatments named AA, AR, RA and RR. In the growing period, the growth rate of A pigs was 35% higher than that of R pigs. In the finishing period, the growth rate was dependent on the feed intake in the growing period, i.e. pigs fed restrictively in the growing period had 6-8% higher growth rate in the finishing period (RA and RR) than pigs fed ad libitum in the growing period (AA and AR). Furthermore, despite RA pigs being 11 kg lighter at day 90 of age they produced as much muscle tissue at slaughter as did AA pigs, but less subcutaneous fat, which resulted in a 5% higher meat content of the carcass. The increased muscle growth of RA pigs in the finishing period (compensatory growth) was probably accomplished by increased satellite cell proliferation (muscle DNA accumulation) and increased capacity for protein synthesis, as indicated by a higher RNA concentration. Feeding level did not affect the lightness of meat, the ultimate pH or the drip loss. However, a change in feeding level at day 90 of age (RA and AR) led to a reduction in meat redness. The present data suggest that feed restriction in the growing period results in compensatory growth of muscle tissue in the finishing period if ad libitum feeding was applied during this period, accomplished by increased satellite cell proliferation and increased capacity for protein synthesis, without significantly affecting the technological meat quality.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare, describe and assess the level of validation of all instruments measuring quality of induction and recovery from anesthesia in dogs.Databases usedA search was performed using the electronic database PubMed to find articles containing an induction quality scale, a recovery quality scale or both in dogs. Articles not directly accessible through PubMed were obtained through the Auburn University Library website and Google Scholar. The phrases ‘induction scoring systems dogs’, ‘recovery scoring systems dogs’, ‘anesthetic induction score dogs’, and ‘anesthetic recovery score dogs’ were used for searches using the ‘best match search’ function. The time frame searched was from 1980 to May 2020. The search was conducted from March 2020 to May 2020.ConclusionsA thoroughly tested and validated scale for measuring the quality of induction and recovery does not exist in the current veterinary literature. A large disagreement exists between studies on the use of induction and recovery scales, and many have reported inconsistent results with current instruments. It is recommended that an induction and recovery scale intended for wide-scale use be constructed and tested extensively for psychometric validation and reliability.  相似文献

The antibody response to two Escherichia coli antigens (0149 and K88) and the in vitro reactivity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) to pokeweed mitogen was studied in growing pigs after exposure to varying degrees of stress. Three experimental groups were used; transportation by lorry, transportation by lorry after a previous injection of a tranquillizing drug (amperozide), no transportation but an amperozide injection. Another group was used as a control group. This group was not transported and received no amperozide injection. The animals were the offspring of boars and sows heterozygous (Nn) for the Hal gene, and all 3 Hal genotypes (NN, Nn, nn) were identified and could thus be compared within litters. Immediately after the experimental treatment, the highest PBL reactivity was found for the amperozide-treated animals and for the non-transported animals, with no differences in reactivity between Hal genotypes. Two weeks later, the treatments caused different effects on pigs of the 3 Hal genotypes, both with regard to the PBL reactivity and the IgG response to 0149. The NN pigs had a higher PBL reactivity than the nn pigs for all treatments except the ‘drug + transport’ class where the reverse rank order was found. The NN pigs also had a higher IgG response to 0149 than the nn pigs in the ‘drug + no transport’ class. The amperozide treatment was followed by a higher PBL reactivity in non-transported NN pigs and in transported nn pigs. The amperozide-treated non-transported NN pigs also had a higher IgG response to 0149. The highest PBL reactivity and IgG response to 0149 were found mainly in pigs with the lowest cortisol levels. Pronounced differences between litters were found for both the antibody response and the PBL reactivity.  相似文献

Abstract

The influence of dietary amino acids on performance and carcass quality was studied in 192 organic indoor and outdoor pigs given diets with different amino acid levels (recommended amino acid level, 7% and 14% lower) ad libitum in a two-phase feeding system. During phase 2, daily consumption of lysine, methionine+cystine and threonine was higher for outdoor than indoor pigs independent of amino acid level (p=0.002, 0.004 and 0.006, respectively). The outdoor pigs grew faster during phase 2 than the indoor pigs (p=0.001), although feed conversion ratio did not differ (p=0.358). Dressing percentage was higher for outdoor than for indoor pigs (p=0.011) but lean meat content did not differ (p=0.904). The health status of the pigs was evaluated and showed that the incidence of pigs seropositive to erysipelas was higher outdoors. Ascaris suum was present in both production systems, whereas Eimeria sp. only was found among outdoor pigs. The results indicate a discrepancy between pigs housed in different production systems rather than between pigs directed to different dietary amino acid levels. This suggests that growing/finishing pigs fed ad libitum can compensate for dietary amino acid levels lower than the current Swedish recommendations without affecting production results.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo describe the allometric scaling principles underlying appropriate indexing of cardiovascular and respiratory measurements obtained in adult mammals, and to propose guidelines for indexing experimental cardiovascular and respiratory data.Database usedPubMed, using the terms ‘allometry’, ‘allometric’, ‘indexing’, ‘cardiovascular’ and ‘respiratory’.ConclusionsIndexing of cardiopulmonary variables is commonly used in attempts to account for the effects of body size on measurements and to standardize them. Some cardiopulmonary variables have been indexed using various functions of body mass in a process that often ignores the underlying relationship between the variable of interest and body size, as described in the allometry literature. This can result in a failure to ideally reduce the effect of body size on measurements in a manner that highlights differences. We review how commonly measured cardiopulmonary variables are related to body mass in mammalian species according to the allometry literature, and offer suggestions on how this information can be used to appropriately index cardiopulmonary variables in a simple and informative manner.  相似文献

This paper reports on the predictability of post mortem abnormalities in individual deliveries of pigs, shipped from the fattening herd to the slaughterhouse. The percentage of pigs in a delivery having post mortem abnormalities was expressed in a Meat Inspection Index. This index is based on data about relevant abnormalities, weighted on the specific significance of each for meat inspection. It was investigated whether Meat Inspection Indices of previous deliveries of pigs could be used for prediction of indices of future deliveries. Results suggest that the Meat Inspection Index cannot be used in such a predictive capacity, partly because of great variation among individual shipments. However, a Meat Inspection Index could play a role in signalling farms that are likely to deliver pigs with a higher level of abnormalities. More attention could then be paid to animals coming from these herds.  相似文献

One hundred and twenty pigs were used to evaluate the effects of different dietary lysine levels on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, and abundance of cationic amino acid transporter messenger RNA (mRNA) in the small intestine of finishing pigs. Pigs received a low lysine diet (LL, 0.60% lysine), moderate lysine diet (ML, 0.80% lysine) or a high lysine diet (HL, 1.00% lysine) for 28 days. A digestion test was carried out during the third week. Although the apparent nutrient digestibility in pigs fed experimental diets were different (P < 0.05) and the highest when pigs were fed ML diet, diets did not change the growth performance. In the duodenum, mRNA abundance of PepT-1, as detected by real-time RT-PCR, was reduced in the LL diet (P < 0.05). A greater abundance of b0,+AT and PepT-1 mRNA was associated with the ML diet (P < 0.05) in the jejunum and ileum, respectively. In the ileum, the HL diet had a lower abundance of CAT-1 mRNA compared with other diets. These results showed that the finishing pigs would gain better nutrient digestibility when the dietary lysine content was 0.80%, and dietary lysine levels influenced the expression of cationic amino acid transporter mRNA in the small intestine of finishing pigs.  相似文献

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of chromium nanocomposite (CrNano) on growth hormone (GH) pulsatile secretion and pituitary GH mRNA expression in finishing pigs. Fifty‐four crossbred pigs (65.57 ± 1.05 kg initial weight) were randomly allotted to one of the three treatments, with three replicate pens per treatment and six pigs per pen. Pigs were offered one of the four diets including a control diet or a control diet supplemented with 200 μg/kg chromium from either chromium chloride (CrCl3) or CrNano for 35 days. During the trial, all pigs were given free access to feed and water. After completion of the feeding trial, blood samples were taken via auriculares at 15 min intervals for 3 h and three pigs from each treatment were slaughtered to collect pituitary to determine GH mRNA level. The results of GH dynamic secretion showed that supplemental CrNano increased the mean level, the lowest value, peak value and peak duration of GH significantly, while there was no significant effect on peak amplitude. Pituitary mRNA expression of GH was improved significantly in pigs fed diet containing Cr from CrNano. These results indicated that CrNano increased GH mRNA expression and secretion in finishing pigs.  相似文献

Summary

Over a period of six months, approximately 4700 blood samples were collected from 97 pig‐finishing farms in the provinces of Noord‐Brabant and Gelderland and screened for antibodies with respect to Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), porcine influenza virus (PI) and Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae (App). There were significant differences in the percentages of seropositive pigs between the two provinces, which may be related to the difference in the density of the pig population in the two provinces.

In practice, it was possible to perform a reliable sera collecting procedure at the slaughterhouse. No farms remained seronegative with respect to most of the disease agents during the sampling period. There was a high degree of variation in the percentages of seropositive pigs per farm as to most of the disease agents. Evidence was found that animals that were seropositive with respect to ADV were significantly more susceptible to becoming seropositive with respect to App. serotype 2, and vice versa. The same connection was observed for PI serotype H1N1 and PI serotype H3N2. Furthermore, evidence was found that pigs seropositive with respect to PI serotype H1Ni only, or to PI serotype H1N1 and ADV or PI serotype H3N2 show a significant decrease in average daily weight gain compared to pigs that were seronegative.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of rearing system (mixed or single-sex) on performance and carcass quality of entire male and female pigs slaughtered at around 90 or 115 kg live weight. We also studied the combined effect of live weight and dietary supplement of raw potato starch (RPS) on technological meat quality for both sexes, and boar taint compounds in entire male pigs. Furthermore, we investigated pre-slaughter routines (pen-wise or mixing with unfamiliar pigs) and sexual maturity. A total of 408 growing/finishing pigs were included in this two-year study. Performance did not differ significantly between entire male and female pigs irrespective of rearing system, except for daily weight gain in the interval from 90 kg to slaughter. Mixed pigs had significantly higher daily weight gain in this interval than single-sex pigs. Entire male pigs had higher carcass lean meat content than female pigs (1.6 percentage units). Technological meat quality differed only slightly between the sexes. Females reared in mixed pens were sexually more mature than female pigs reared in single-sex pens, and mature females had higher growth rate but lower meat content in carcasses than immature females. In contrast, female contact did not influence sexual maturity of entire male pigs. Mixing entire male pigs with unfamiliar pigs at the abattoir resulted in more damaged skin compared with pen-wise keeping whereas female pigs had almost no visible skin damage. We therefore recommend that entire male pigs are not mixed with unfamiliar pigs during transport and at the abattoir, because of fighting and subsequent skin damage. The levels of skatole in fat were significantly lower in high-weight entire male pigs fed RPS compared to high-weight pigs without RPS. Androstenone levels in fat were high in all groups.  相似文献
