The 48 and 96-hr LC50 values of Pb (Pb(NO3)2) with O. niloticus were 3.34 and 2.15 mg L?1, respectively, compared to 1.91 and 1.72 mg L?1, respectively, for C. lazera. C. tentans larvae and Benacus sp. demonstrated 48-hr LC 50 of 2.68 and 1.89 mg l?1 respectively. The 96-hr LC50 value was 1.77 mg L?1 for Chironomus and 1.36 mg L?1 for Benacus. Clarias appeared to be the most susceptible of the four to Pb poisoning; Chironomus being the least susceptible. Uptake pattern of Pb by fingerlings of O. niloticus and C. lazera exposed to 0.33 and 0.27 mg L?1 Pb, respectively, and the clearance of accumulated Pb were curvilinear. There was an initial ‘fast’ phase of accumulation occurring during the first 96 hr, followed by a slower phase over the remaining 240 hr. Mean Pb concentrations in gills, intestine, liver, muscle, bone, skin and whole body of O. niloticus were 33.30, 22.2, 5.3, 2.8, 1.8 and 14.9 μg g?1, respectively, compared to 28.7, 6.5, 11.5, 2.5, 5.6, 5.9 and 6.8 µg g?1 respectively in C. lazera. The half life of Pb in Oreochromis was 20 hr compared to 43 hr in C. lazera. Bioconcentration factors in Oreochromis and Clarias were 78.3 and 33.8, respectively. The data suggest that O. niloticus accumulates and eliminates Pb faster than C. lazera.  相似文献

The effects of cadmium and copper on larval metamorphosis and mortality of cultured Capitella sp Y were investigated. Metatrochophore larvae were exposed to 0.013 (control), 0.030, 0.080, 0.120, and 0.170 mg Cd L?1 and 0.017 (control), 0.025, 0.060, and 0.075 mg Cu L?1 for 34 days. Larval mortality significantly (p < 0.01) increased with increasing Cd and Cu concentrations (Kruskal-Wallis test), with similar effects for both metals for day 10 (LC50 = 0.035 mg Cd L?1 and 0.035 mg Cu L?1). Metamorphosis was inhibited in larvae exposed to the two metals in the absence of food, the effect of Cu being the most severe. This study suggests that Cd and Cu exposure could be harmful to early developmental stages of Capitella sp Y producing a delay in recruitment into natural populations.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dichloride) to fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus (Trewavas) was determined in 96 hr staticbioassays. During the assays opercular ventilation and tailfin movement rates of the fish were determined.Haemotological parameters of the blood and histopathology ofthe gills were observed. The 96 hr LC50 of paraquat to fingerlings of O. niloticus was observed to be 11.84 mg L-1.Histopathology of gills of the fish exposed to 12.00 mgL-1, and 14.20 mg L-1 showed a dose-dependentdisruption of the architecture of the lamellae, filamenthyperplasia and atrophy, leading to impairment in oxygenuptake. Other symptoms of toxicosis in exposed fish includeloss of equilibrium; agitated swimming; air gulping;haemorrhaging of the gills, pectoral and pelvic fins; periodof quiescence and finally, death.  相似文献

The toxic effects and accumulation of the heavy metals, Cd, Cu, and Zn by the sheath forming blue-green alga Chroococcus paris were investigated. All three of the metals were bound rapidly. Approximately 90% of the total amount of the added metal was bound within 1 min. Further significant binding occurred at a slower rate. The maximum metal binding capacity, as determined by filtration studies, was determined to be 53, 120, and 65 mg g?1 dry algal weight for Cd, Cu, and Zn, respectively. Binding curves for the metals followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The amount of metal bound increased with increasing pH. Metal binding increased significantly when pH was increased from 4 to 7. Nearly all of the metal was found to be rapidly EDTA extractable. Metals were found to be increasingly toxic to growing cultures in the order, Zn, Cd, and Cu. All of the metals studied exhibited toxic effects at concentrations greater than 1.0 mg L?1. The lowest concentrations used which showed detectable toxicity were 0.1 mg L?1 for Cu and >0.4 mg L?1 for Cd and Zn.  相似文献

Copper accumulation in the gill, liver, kidney, spleen, and muscle tissues of Oreochromis niloticus was determined after exposing the fish to 10, 50, and 100 μg Cu/L applied as copper sulphate (CuSO4) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) after 1, 7, and 15 days. Changes in the liver SOD, CAT, and GPx activities influenced by this accumulation were also studied. No mortality was observed during the experiments. Copper levels increased in the gill, liver, kidney, and spleen tissues of O. niloticus compared to control when exposed to both CuSO4 and CuO NPs, whereas no accumulation was detected in muscle tissue at the end of the exposure period. Highest accumulation of copper was observed in the order of the liver, kidney, spleen, and gill tissues, respectively. SOD, CAT, and GPx activities increased in the liver tissue at the end of the exposure period. Overall, CuO NPs are more effective than CuSO4 in terms of tissue accumulation and liver enzyme activities.  相似文献

The concentrations of Al in fish gills has been used as a measure of fish exposure to this metal in acidified waters. This experiment was designed to determine if other fish tissues also accumulate Al and thus possibly contribute to the cause of death. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were exposed to the following fours test conditions for 48 hr or until death: (1) pH 6.8, <0.001 mg.L?1 Al (n=6); (2) pH 5.2, <0.001 mg1L?1 Al (n=2);(3) pH 5.2,1.0 mg.L?1 Al (n=5); (4) pH 6.8, 1.0 mg.L?1 Al (n=3). The trout were held in synthetic, low Ca water prior to, and during, experimentation. Esophagus-stomach, gonad, gall bladder, gill (left and right), heart, intestine, kidney, liver, muscle (epaxial), and spleen were digested in a 4:1 mixture of HNO3:HClO4 and analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrophotometry. Elevated Al concentrations were found in gill and gastrointestinal tissues. Left and right gills of fish exposed to pH 5.2, 1.0 mg.L?1 Al were the only tissues found to be significantly different (p<0.01) between the test conditions. The mean total Al concentrations of these test 3 fish, for the left and right gill were 3.61 and 4.33 mg.g?1 Al dw. The Al concentration in thle gastrointestinal tissues of the fish exposed to pH 6.8 at 1.0 mg.L?1 Al was greater than that of the control fish, but not statistically significant. These results suggest that the analysis of whole gill remains an effective indicator of Al exposure in fishes at low pH.  相似文献

The early life stages of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) were exposed to Pb in acute (96 hr) and sub-chronic (90 day) bioassays (water hardness = 152 mg L?1 as CaCO3). After 96-hr static exposures at nominal Pb concentrations up to 15.9 mg L?1, eggs and sac fry showed no increased mortality over that in controls. Swim-up fry (96-hr LC50 = 2.8 mg Pb L?1) were more sensitive to Pb exposure than were fingerlings (96-hr LC50 of 29.0 mg Pb L?1 ). The relation between dissolved Pb and mortality was non-significant for either swim-up fry or fingerlings. Fingerlings were exposed to Pb concentrations as high as 405 μg L?1 for 90 day to evaluate effects on substrate selection, locomotor activity, hematology, and weight. Dark or light substrate selection (cover-seeking) and locomotor activity, weight and hemoglobin concentration in the blood were not significantly altered by any treatment. Hematocrit and leucocrit varied significantly but not in relation to Pb levels. Sub-chronic Pb exposure did not appear to represent a threat to smallmouth bass in waters of medium hardness and above-neutral pH (7.1 to 7.9).  相似文献

The protective role of 18 amino acids on the acute toxicity of Cu in a fresh water cladoceran, Daphnia magna is reported. One hundred percent mortality in 48 hr of exposure occured at 0.56 mg L?1 of Cu or higher. A dose of each tested amino acid (10 mg L?1 was found to significantly neutralize the toxic effect of Cu as evidenced by a decrease in mortality and a significant increase in the median survival time (LT50) value). The 48 hr LC50 value was 0.093 mg L?1 for Cu alone, while the LC50s with Cu plus amino acids ranged from 0.438 to 2.516 mg L?1 of Cu, suggesting a 4.7 to 27 fold decrease in acute toxicity of Cu. A significant difference between LC50 of Cu alone and Cu with amino acids was observed. The role of amino acids for protection against heavy metal pollution stress in aquatic animals is discussed.  相似文献

The annual average concentration of Cl in Cayuga Lake, NY, has decreased from a value of approximately 102 mg L?1 in 1970, when the discharge of NaCl fines from an adjoining rock salt mine was discontinued, to a concentration of approximately 46 mg L?1 in 1988. A complete-mixed model for Cl concentration accurately simulated this decrease in concentration, establishing that the decrease was the result of an abrupt reduction in loading. The time course of the decrease strongly supports the position that the high Cl concentrations that prevailed in the lake in the late 1960's were largely a result of the discharge from the mining facility, and not due to the input of enriched groundwater as previously hypothesized. The predicted steady-state Cl concentration associated with the complete flushing of the mining facility input, expected in about the year 2000, is approximately 32 mg L?1. Further, the model analysis supports previous speculation that the major source of material loading to the lake, the Seneca River, ‘short-circuits’ to the outlet; i.e., this tributary should not be included in material budgets for the lake.  相似文献

Created wetlands offer a low cost, low maintenance, and practical alternative for upgrading secondary municipal wastewater treatment systems. The removal efficiencies, effects of seasonal temperature variations, and effects of increased loading rates on contaminant removal within such a system was studied by Auburn University researchers at a created wetland site in Hurtsboro, Alabama. The 0.16 ha system consisted of a two cell wetlands planted with cattails (Typha latifolia), bulrush (Scirpus validus), arrow duck potatoes (Sagitaria latifolis), burr reeds (Spargaminum eurycarpun), water pennywort (Hydrocotyl ranunculoides), and parrotfeather (Myriophyllum brasiliense). Testing occurred from January through September of 1988 at hydraulic loading rates of 169, 289, and 345 m3 ha?1 d?1. The monthly average total suspended solids influent: effluent mg L?1 concentration ratio during the study period was 135:19 while the monthly average total BOD5 influent: effluent mg L?1 concentration ratio was 38:8. Once the system stabilized, the monthly average total BOD5 effluent concentration remained essentially constant over the range of average BOD5 loading rates employed in this study. Total Kjeldahl N removal was more effective at loading rates of 2.6 kg ha?1 d?1. The monthly average influent: effluent TKN mg L?1 concentration ratio was 15:4.  相似文献

Transport of contaminants from coal storage areas through the rooting zone has the potential to negatively affect shallow ground water and terrestrial vegetation. Reject coal piles represent a worst-case scenario for contamination from coal storage areas because of the long residence time of the coal. Preliminary hydrologic data were collected from an area of stressed vegetation adjacent to an inactive ash basin and reject coal pile in South Carolina. The water table is near the surface (< 60 cm) in this wetland area and water movement is primarily to the west, toward the Savannah River. Acid leachate migration from the reject coal pile has contaminated the water-table aquifer with sulfate (up to 22 200 mg L?1) and metals (Fe to 9560 mg L?1) Al to 1110 mg L?1) A shallow plume of contaminated ground water parallels the reject coal pile and is elongated in the direction of ground-water movement. The plume is migrating westward at a calculated velocity range of 6.3 to 10.4 m yr?1. Leachate migration from the reject coal has produced a highly acidic (pH down to 2.2) and highly saline (EC to 11.8 dS m?1) rooting zone and is most likely responsible for the stressed vegetation in the study area.  相似文献

In this work, the acute effects of copper, chromium and mixtures of both metals on females of the marine crab Carcinus maenas were investigated. The parameters indicative of toxicity were mortality and the activity of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutathione-S-tranferases (GST). LC50 values determined at 96 hr were 51.8 mg L-1 for copper, 49.8 mg L-1 for chromium and 15 mg L-1 Cu + 43.6 mg L-1 Cr for the mixture of both metals. Copper, chromium and the mixtures of both metals significantly inhibit haemolymph AChE, ovarian LDH and hepatopancreas GST after an in vivo exposure of 96 hr to concentrations lower than NOEC values for mortality. Furthermore, the mixtures tested showed a more pronounced effect than individual agents.  相似文献

The data on the effects of the concentrations (0.5, l, 2, 5 mg L?1) of the heavy metals, Hg, As, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr on changes in growth population of a fecal coliform bacterium Escherichia coli (in term of number of E. coli per 100 mL water) showed a gradual decline in growth population of the fecal coliform bacterium with the increase of exposure time, as well as concentrations of the metals over control data. The effects were markedly recorded with the treatment of 5 mg L?1. In general, the harmful effects of the metals on growth population of E. coli were found by the treatments in the order: Cd>Ph>Cu>As>Hg>Cr.  相似文献

The toxicity of U to Daphnia magna was determined in acute and chronic tests. The 48-hr LC50 of U (VI) in Columbia River water was 6 mg L?1. Acute toxicity diminished by a factor of 7.5 as mean water hardness and alkalinity values increased from 70 mg L?1. and 57 mg L?1. to 195 mg L?1. and 130 mg L?1. respectively. This effect was most likely the result of complexation of uranyl ion with carbonate ions. D. magna reproduction was suppressed in Columbia River water at U concentrations between 0.5 and 3.5 mg L?1. Potential hazards of U to aquatic life are discussed as they relate to mining practices.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal mobilization trends of metals in surface water were evaluated in the US–Mexico San Pedro River (SPR). Water samples were collected at five sampling stations for the analysis of dissolved oxygen, pH, electric conductivity, sulfates, and metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn). Quality of the water was characterized through Ecological Criteria of Water Quality (ECWQ) established in Mexico and Water Quality Criteria (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)). High total metal concentrations were detected as follows: Fe?>?Cu?>?Mn?>?Zn?>?Pb?>?Cd. Metal concentrations were slightly higher in dry season than in rainy season: Cd (below detection limit (BDL)–0.21 mg L?1), Cu (BDL–13 mg L?1), Fe (0.16–345 mg L?1), Mn (0.12–52 mg L?1), Pb (BDL–0.48 mg L?1), and Zn (0.03–17.8 mg L?1). Low pH and dissolved oxygen values as well as high sulfate content were detected in both seasons. High values of metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) were detected at station E1 representing pollution source, as well as at stations E2 (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn), E3 (Fe, Mn, Pb), and E4 and E5 (Fe, Mn). Detected concentrations exceeded maximum permissible established in ECWQ and Water Quality Criteria (EPA). Efflorescence salts on sediments in the dry season could increase levels of metals in water column. This study provides valuable information on the potential mobility of metals in surface water of SPR located in an arid environment where transport processes are strongly linked to climate. The information derived from this study should help the regional and national authorities to address present environmental regulations.  相似文献

Acute exposure of the central stoneroller minnow to sublethal levels of phenol was found to decrease the ability of this species to tolerate hypoxic conditions as indicated by the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at which loss of equilibrium occurred. For fishes acclimated at 7.5 °C, loss of equilibrium occurred at progressively higher DO levels as the phenol exposure concentration was increased from 0 to 12 mg phenol L?1. Mean DO concentrations at which loss of equilibrium occurred ranged from 2.33 ± 0.10 mg O2 L?1. for the control group (0 mg phenol L?1. to 2.76 ± 0.14 mg O2 L?1. (at 12 mg phenol L?1. Loss of equilibrium also occurred at progressively higher DO levels in fish acclimated at 23 °C, but only after an initial decrease among the 6 mg phenol L?1. test fish in the loss of equilibrium DO concentration. At 23 °C, loss of equilibrium occurred at DO levels ranging from 1.3 ± 0.09 mg O2 L?1. (6 mg phenol L?1. to 2.33 ± 0.16 mg O2 L?1. (12 mg phenol L?1. These data indicate that acute exposures to sublethal levels of phenol can have significant effects on the ability of the stoneroller minnow to tolerate conditions of low DO, and the results agree with the previously reported relationship between phenol toxicity and DO levels.  相似文献

The effects of Hg, As, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr (1, 2, and 5 mg L?1 each) on Azolla pinnata R. Br. were analyzed. The treatments (2 and 5 mg L?1) of the heavy metal pollutants decreased Hill activity, chlorophyll, protein and dry wt, and increased tissue permeability over control values. The effects were most pronounced with the treatment of 5 mg L?1. The harmful effects of the metals were, in general, found by the treatments in the order: Cd 〉 Hg 〉 Cu 〉 As 〉 Pb 〉 Cr. There was no significant change in these parameters at 1 mg L?1 of the metals over control. Thus Azolla pinnata shows tolerance to the heavy metals tested up to 1 mg L?1 each.  相似文献

Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were exposed to a range of pH and A1 concentrations in soft water (8 mg Ca L?1) to determine effect levels at various life stages. The tested pH levels ranged from 8.0 through 5.2 and inorganic monomeric Al from 15 through 60 μg L?1. Reproductive processes including spawning, embryogenesis and early larval survival were more sensitive to acid stress than were juvenile growth and survival. Juvenile survival was significantly reduced at pH 5.2 + 60 μg Al L?1 (P <0.05). Spawning success was reduced at pH 6.0 and 5.5 (P <0.10) and failed completely at pH 5.2, regardless of Al concentration. An apparant beneficial effect of added Al was observed during spawning at pH 7.5 + 35 μg Al L?1, but this effect was not significantly greater than at pH 7.5 + 15 μg Al L?1. A significant (P <0.05) decrease in larval survival occurred at pH 6.0 + 15 μg Al L?1 and lower compared to the survival at pH 7.5 + 15 μg Al L?1. Aluminum at 30 μg L?1 provided protection resulting in short term increased embryo-larval survival at pH 5.5. The effect of parental exposure on progeny survival was assessed by an interchange of embryos from the spawning treatment to all tested exposure conditions. When reared at pH 8.0 + 15 μg Al L?1 through 6.0 + 15 μg Al L?1 or at pH 5.5 + 30 μg Al L?1, parental exposure did not significantly influence progeny survival. However, survival was significantly reduced among progeny from brood fish reared at pH 5.5 + 15 μg Al L?1 as compared to those spawned at pH 6.0 + 15 μg Al L?1 and above, or at pH 5.5 + 30 μg Al L?1 (P <0.05). Juvenile or 14 d larval growth effects were not detected under any exposure condition (P >0.05). Ultimately, fathead minnow young-of-the-year recruitment and production potential can be expected to diminish when environmental pH falls to 6.0, and to fail completely at 5.5 and lower.  相似文献

The hydrobiological parameters of the waters in the vicinity of ash slurry and cooling water outfall from Ennore Thermal Power Station located on the shore of Bay of Bengal, Madras were determined. In the outfall site, an increase in mean temperature (35 °C), salinity (3.5%), nitrite ? N (25 μg L?1), ammonia ? N (185 μg L?1), phosphate ? P (1 mg L?1), silicate ? SiO2 (1.65 mg L?1), chlorophyll a (21.1 mg m?3), respiration (76% of gross production), suspended solids (3.84 g L?1), BOD (3.65 mg O2) and decrease in pH (8.1), dissolved oxygen (DO) (5.5 mg L?1), nitrate ? N (15 jig L?1), gross production (16.6 Mg C m?3 hr?1) were recorded. Phaeopigment and respiration were inversely related with chlorophyll a and net productivity, respectively. Microbial biomass varied spatially, but was generally low (114.5 jig L?1), at the outfall site. The hydrobiological characteristics of water with high turbidity indicate that the ash slurry and coolant water play a crucial role in a localized area resulting in environmental disturbance. The effect was profoundly influenced by an initial dilution, dispersion, wave mixing and current direction. The ecological relationships between these parameters and their implications in coastal pollution are discussed.  相似文献

This study is aimed at assessing the ability of metal-resistant yeast, Candida tropicalis, to uptake cadmium from the liquid medium. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Cd2+ against C. tropicalis was 2,800 mg L?1. The yeast also showed tolerance towards Zn2+ (3,100 mg L?1), Ni2+ (3,000 mg L?1), Hg2+ (2,400 mg L?1), Cu2+ (2,300 mg L?1), Cr6+ (2,000 mg L?1), and Pb2+ (1,200 mg L?1). The yeast isolate showed typical growth curves, but low specific rate of growth was observed in the presence of cadmium. The yeast isolate showed optimum growth at 30°C and pH 7. The metal processing ability of the isolate was determined in a medium containing 100 mg L?1 of Cd2+. C. tropicalis could decline Cd2+ 57%, 69%, and 80% from the medium after 48, 96, and 144 h, respectively. C. tropicalis was also able to remove Cd2+ 56% and 73% from the wastewater after 6 and 12 days, respectively. Cd produced an increase in glutathione (GSH) and non-protein thiol levels by 146.15% and 59.67% at 100 mg L?1 concentration, respectively. Metal tolerance and accumulation together with changes in the GSH status and non-protein thiols under Cd exposure were studied in C. tropicalis.  相似文献
