Suffolk x Rambouillet ewes were used in two consecutive years to test the ability of Dorset and Suffolk yearling rams to stimulate ovulation and estrus in early summer (late June and July) breeding. After spring weaning about June 1, ewes were randomly divided into three groups and for 2 wk either were isolated from rams or were preexposed to either yearling Dorset or Suffolk rams by penning of rams in proximity to ewes. Ewes then were rerandomized into two groups for joining with either yearling Dorset or Suffolk rams fitted with marking harnesses. Serum progesterone profiles and crayon marks were used as indicators of ovulation and estrus. Overall lambing rate was not different among preexposure treatments for the 2 yr. However, early lambing rate (in the first 14 d of lambing season) was significantly affected by preexposure group (24% for Dorset vs 9% for Suffolk and 10% for isolation), especially in the 2nd yr (31% for Dorset vs 8% for both Suffolk and isolation). Ewes preexposed to Dorsets also lambed 10 d earlier (P less than .05) than ewes preexposed to Suffolks in yr 2, but the groups did not differ in yr 1. Ewes exposed to Dorset rams for breeding had higher overall lambing rates than ewes bred to Suffolks (75% vs 54%), especially in the 1st yr (77% vs 48%). Lambs sired by Dorset rams were born 6 d earlier in yr 1 (P less than .05) but only 1 d earlier in yr 2. Data from both years indicate that Dorsets are superior to Suffolks in ability to sire lambs in fall lambing systems.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine if breeding ewe lambs (hoggets) would influence subsequent two-year-old (two-tooth) ewe liveweight and reproductive performance and their lamb's performance to weaning. Two-tooth Romney ewes that had been bred and lambed as a hogget (n = 505) were compared with those of 196 ewes that were bred as a hogget but did not lamb and 235 ewes that were not presented for breeding as a hogget. Hogget lambing resulted in reduced (P < 0.05) two-tooth liveweight and body condition score at breeding although still present this liveweight difference was reduced by two-tooth lamb weaning. Two-tooth ewes that had previously lambed as a hogget had greater (P < 0.05) returns to service rates and lower (P < 0.05) fecundity (multiple-bearing/two-tooth bred) than those that were bred for the first time. Two-tooth lamb liveweights were unaffected by hogget lambing. These results show that hogget lambing had a small negative effect on subsequent two-tooth reproductive performance. This was most likely caused by reduced liveweight at two-tooth breeding and indicates that farmers need to ensure management practices are in place to reduce the impact of hogget lambing on two-tooth liveweight.  相似文献

Multiparous Suffolk and Suffolk-cross ewes were randomly allotted to treatments within breed and year to measure effects of ram exposure, during transition from anestrus to breeding activity, on reproductive performance. Treatments were: 1) ewes joined with two mature vasectomized Rambouillet rams for 15 d before breeding (DC), 2) ewes maintained across a net wire fence from two vasectomized rams for 15 d before breeding (FC) and 3) ewes maintained approximately 400 m away from rams (NC). At the end of the 15 d, all ewes were placed in one pasture and mated to three fertile Suffolk rams during a 34-d breeding season. A total of 96 Suffolk and 177 Suffolk-cross ewes was utilized during the 3-yr experiment. A greater (P less than .05) prebreeding ovulation percentage was observed in DC and FC than in NC ewes. Mating and lambing occurred approximately 6 d earlier for DC or FC ewes than for NC ewes. A similarly designed experiment was conducted using Suffolk and Suffolk-cross ewe lambs allotted to treatments within breed and year to measure effects of ram exposure during the natural breeding season, but prior to breeding. Treatment differences were not detected (P greater than .05) for date of first observed estrus, date of lambing, percentage of ewes lambing in the first 17 d of the lambing season, number of lambs born per ewe lamb exposed or number of lambs born per ewe lamb giving birth.  相似文献

To determine the ovarian response to the ram effect after treatment with melatonin, on 8 March, 71 Rasa Aragonesa ewes were randomly assigned to either the treatment group and given an 18mg melatonin implant or the untreated group. On 19 April (day 0), rams were introduced into the flock. Melatonin treatment produced a significantly higher percentage of cyclic ewes at ram introduction (P<0.05). Melatonin-treated ewes had their first oestrus after ram introduction significantly earlier than did untreated ewes (P<0.0001), and the groups differed in the distribution of their ovarian response. Most (80%) of the treated ewes exhibited a silent ovulation followed by a cycle of normal duration, whereas about half (52%) of the untreated ewes exhibited a silent ovulation, a short cycle, and another silent ovulation followed by a cycle of normal duration (P<0.05). At ram introduction, melatonin-treated ewes, cyclic and non-cyclic, had higher mean plasma progesterone concentrations than did untreated ewes. The proportion of ewes that mated within the first 17 days of the mating period was significantly higher among the treated ewes than in the untreated ewes (P<0.0001). Furthermore, at lambing, 39% of the melatonin-treated ewes lambed within the first 17 days of the lambing period, while none of the untreated ewes lambed in that period. The untreated group exhibited peaks in mating between days 18 and 21, and particularly, between days 22 and 25, when the majority of ewes lambed; peaks did not occur in the treatment group. Treated and untreated ewes did not differ significantly in fertility, litter size and fecundity. In conclusion, melatonin treatment modifies the ovarian response to the ram effect in ewes, which leads to modifications in mating patterns, and consequently, the lambing curve.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine whether controlled internal drug release devices-type G (CIDR-G) could be used in conjunction with the ram effect to advance the breeding season and lambing and thereafter could be reapplied to stimulate breeding of ewes to produce a second lambing in late summer. Finn crossbred and Columbia ewes were treated with CIDR-G from July 6 to 18. Rams, which had been isolated from ewes, were joined with the flock upon CIDR-G removal. All 59 CIDR-G-treated ewes exhibited estrus, and 55 lambed from breeding within a 30-d period after CIDR-G withdrawal. Eighteen of 19 contemporary control ewes (no CIDR-G) were bred, and 16 lambed. Ewes that had lambed from the CIDR-G and control groups were retreated as before, with CIDR_G inserted March 1 and withdrawn March 13, concomitant with sudden exposure to rams. Of 55 CIDR-G-treated sheep, 53 were bred and 45 lambed. All 16 control ewes were bred and lambed. A second experiment was conducted to determine whether treatment with CIDR-G and the ram effect was effective in mid-spring. The CIDR-G were applied for 12 d and removed on May 1 or 6 from Finn crossbred, Columbia, and Polypay ewes. Rams were introduced upon CIDR-G withdrawal. Of 59 CIDR-G-treated ewes, 58 exhibited estrus and 45 lambed. Twenty-three of 30 contemporary control ewes were bred, and 20 lambed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of exogenous melatonin on reproductive performance of 737 Polypay and Polypay-cross ewes were evaluated during a late March and April breeding period. Different concentrations (2 or 10 mg) routes of administration (fed vs implanted) and durations of administration (20 or 40 d before breeding) were studied. Estrus was synchronized in all ewes using 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) in a vaginal pessary. Number of mature ewes lambing/ewe present at lambing was increased (P less than .05) nearly 20% by implanting for 40 d with melatonin (75%) or by feeding either 2 (72%) or 10 mg (73%) melatonin for 40 d before spring breeding compared with untreated control ewes (54%) or ewes implanted for only 20 d before breeding (58%). Date of lambing, number of lambs born/ewes lambing and number of lambs born alive/ewe lambing were not altered significantly by treatments. Number of yearling ewes (n = 166 for ewes 1.5 yr old at lambing time) lambing/ewe present at lambing was lower (P less than .01; 26%) than that of mature ewes (n = 381, greater than or equal to 2.0 yr; 68%). We concluded that feeding 2 or 10 mg melatonin or implanting melatonin for 40 d enhanced reproductive performance and effectively overcame the restrictions of seasonality of breeding in mature ewes. In yearling ewes, 10 mg melatonin increased the number of ewes lambing.  相似文献

In Rajasthan, India megastrol acetate and progesterone were administered to ewes (25 Chokla, 25 Malpura, aged between 3 and 4) in November 1968. Each ewe received 50 mg of either megastrol acetate or progesterone. Administration was intravaginal or intramuscular. During treatment only 3 ewes (2 megastrol acetate-injected and 1 progesterone-injected ewes) came into heat; thus, the progestogens exerted an inhibiting effect. 76% and 88% of the megastrol acetate and progesterone ewes, respectively, exhibited heat within 96 hours of therapy's end. Breed showed no significant effect on occurrence of estrus after therapy. Release of estrus within 96 hours occurred in 91.3% and 74.0% of intravaginally and intramuscularly treated ewes, respectively. 17 (41.5%) of the 41 ewes inseminated at their synchronized estrus lambed as a result of breeding in that first cycle. Thus, questions arise as to efficiency of ovulation, fertilization, nidation, and lambing in the case of synchronized estrus by use of different progestogens. 75% of ewes showing typical fern pattern at insemination lambed. An antiseptic vaginal douche applied after withdrawal of the sponge used in iv administration might be responsible for increased posttreatment fertility in this group.  相似文献

We defined retention of fetal membranes (RFM) in dairy ewes as failure to expel the placenta within 6h after lambing the last lamb and designed a matched case-control study to identify factors that affect the risk of retention. For each ewe with RFM, the next ewe in the flock that lambed and expelled the placenta in <6h after lambing the last lamb was selected as control. Data analyzed included 92 pairs of ewes from 25 flocks comprising a total of 7275 ewes (median flocksize 270 ewes). Factors investigated for associations with RFM were induction of lambing, obstetrical assistance because of dystocia, parity, the number of liveborn lambs, the occurrence of stillbirth(s), the mean weight of the litter on the third day post-lambing and the occurrence of neonatal death in the litter. Conditional logistic regression indicated (1) that the risk of RFM increased linearly with increasing number of liveborn lambs and (2) that the risk of retention was 4-fold higher in ewes that received assistance at lambing than those that lambed normally.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to compare the efficacy of synthetic progestogens administered by subcutaneous ear implant or intravaginal sponge to induce a synchronized estrus in adult ewes and ewe lambs and to evaluate reproductive performance (fertility and litter size) to breeding at the synchronized estrus. Experimental animals were representative of three strains maintained in total confinement and exposed to a synthetic light regimen which alternated at intervals of 4 mo from 18 h day length to 10 h day length/24 h. Treatments were applied at different times of the year at the end of a low light cycle. Implants contained Norgestomet (3 mg) impregnated in a polymethacrylate polymer (Implant H) or impregnated in a silastic polymer containing 1.05 (Implant S1), 1.78 (Implant S2) or 2.60 mg (Implant S3) Norgestomet, respectively. Intravaginal sponges contained 40 mg Fluorogestone Acetate. Implants or sponges were left in situ for 12 d and 500 IU pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin was injected im at the time of removal. Following treatment with Implant H, 96% of ewes were judged to be in estrus at 48 h after implant removal. Fertility of adult ewes and ewe lambs (6 to 7 mo of age at time of breeding) at the synchronized estrus were similar after implant H or sponge treatment, but litter size was higher (P less than .05) for adult ewes treated with sponges. The percentages of adult ewes marked by rams within 60 h after removal of silastic implants or intravaginal sponges were similar. There was a tendency for ewe lambs to be marked later than adult ewes and for adult ewes treated with Implant S1 and Implant S2 to be marked earlier than ewes treated with Implant S3 or sponges. Higher percentages (P less than .05) of adult ewes and ewe lambs lambed to breeding at the synchronized estrus after treatment with Implant S2 or Implant S3, respectively, than after treatment with Implants S2 or sponges.  相似文献

Traditional treatments of two prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2alpha) doses at 10-day intervals or more did not result in acceptable pregnancy rates in timed artificial insemination (TAI) programmes in ewes. An explanation might be the undefined time-period of the onset of oestrus and ovulation after the treatment. Recently a consistent interval to oestrus and ovulation was obtained by giving PGF2alpha at day 3 post-ovulation, i.e. when the largest follicle of the first follicular wave of the cycle was still growing. This can be achieved when a second dose of PGF2alpha is given 7 days after a first dose. In this work, we evaluated the synchronization of oestrus and determined which of three different moments of TAI was the most successful using a PGF2alpha (PG-7d) protocol in a large flock. A total of 436 nulliparous and multiparous ewes were treated with two doses of a PGF2alpha analogue (delprostenate 160 microg, i.m.) separated by 7 days. Onset of oestrus was recorded twice a day and a single cervical TAI with fresh undiluted semen was performed either at 42 h (n = 152), 48 h (n = 120), or 54 h (n = 164), after the second PGF2alpha dose without taking into account the oestrous response. Pregnancy rate was determined by transrectal ultrasonography 30 days after insemination. Onset of oestrus was detected in 308 of 328 and 89 of 108 multiparous and nulliparous ewes, respectively (p < 0.001), within 72 h after treatment. The distribution of the onset of oestrus did not differ between multiparous and nulliparous ewes and the highest proportion of ewes in oestrus was detected between 25 to 48 h (313/397) from the second PGF2alpha dose. The pregnancy rate in ewes inseminated at 42 h tended to be higher than those inseminated at 48 h (p = 0.09) and was higher than those inseminated at 54 h (p < 0.05) (56/152, 31/120, 37/164; respectively). Therefore, the use of the PG-7d protocol resulted in a very high synchronization of oestrus with the highest concentration (around 80%) between 25 to 48 h from the end of treatment. The best pregnancy rate (37%) was obtained after a single cervical TAI with fresh semen at 42 h.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of 255 Rambouillet (R), Dorset (D), Finnsheep (F) and F1 ewes born in 1978-1979 (group I) and 1979-1980 (group II) and managed in a semiconfinement fall/winter lambing system was evaluated through 4 yr of age of all ewes and through 5 yr for a portion of group I ewes. Ewes were with rams from approximately May 1 to late September each year, with a 2-wk break late in July/early August. Traits considered were fertility (ewes lambed/ewes exposed), lambing date, litter size, lamb survivial and 70-d lamb weights. Breeds and crossbred groups differed significantly in lambing date, with DR crossbred ewes earliest and F ewes latest. Repeatabilities for groups I and II were .31 and .22, .24 and .24 and .11 and .07 for lambing date, fertility and litter size, respectively. There was no significant heterosis in lambing date, although DR ewes in both groups I and II were superior to (D + R)/2, by about 1 wk on average. There was significant positive heterosis for fertility and traits of which fertility is a component in FR ewes in group I, but none in group II. The FD ewes showed negative heterosis for litter size, -.23 (P less than .05) for group I and -.09 for group II. The results indicate: F and FD ewes are not well adapted to the Mediterranean climate where this experiment was conducted; there is little, if any, useful heterosis in crosses among these three breeds for lambing date or other reproduction traits and RD and R ewes are most suitable of the groups tested, while late onset of the breeding season limits the usefulness of even 50% Finnsheep ewes for an autumn lambing system in this environment.  相似文献

The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effectiveness (fertility and lambing) of priming with a single injection of progesterone plus PMSG in anovulatory lactating Sarda ewes subjected to the ram effect (RE) in spring. Thirty ewes (P4 group) were i.m. injected with 30 mg progesterone and 500 IU PMSG 36 h before ram introduction (d 0). This treatment was compared to a 12-day treatment with fluorogestone acetate intravaginal sponges that was followed by injections of 350 IU PMSG upon sponge withdrawal (FGA group, n=30). All ewes responded to RE, showing plasma progestrone concentrations >1 ng/mL between d 6 and 12 (FGA) or 6 and 9 (P4). Eighty-nine percent of the P4 ewes conceived at first ovulation, and 11% conceived following a short estrus cycle. Lambings occurred on d 150.4 +/- 3.9, and the lambing rate was 100%. The fertility of the FGA ewes was 83% for the induced ovulation and was 7% for the second ovulation after a normal cycle. The FGA ewes lambed on d 149.8 +/- 4.4, and the lambing rate was 83%. Two abortions were recorded for the FGA ewes, which had higher prolificacy than the P4 group (2.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 1.8 +/- 0.4, respectively; P<0.05). Both fertility and the lambing rate were high in both groups, with a high degree of estrus synchronization, and there were no significant differences between the groups. We concluded that priming of lactating Sarda ewes in spring with P4+PMSG before RE is an effective and competitive method (cheaper and more practical than FGA+PMSG) of inducing fertile ovulations in these ewes.  相似文献

110 ewes were allocated for intrauterine insemination. One succeeded to deposite semen intra uterine in 43 of the ewes and 37 (86%) of these lambed. In the remaining 67 the semen was deposited in cervix, and of these 15 lambed (22,4%). Totally 52 (47,3%) of the inseminated ewes lambed. Similar results were obtained by one or two inseminations in the heat. Dilution 1:3 gave a significantly (p less than 0.05) higher lambing rate than dilution 1:9 when the semen was deposited in the cervix, while the results were similar for dilution 1:3 and 1:9 by intra interine deposition. A group of 49 ewes was inseminated according to the conventional method on the first day of heat and the intra uterine method on the second day. Intra uterine deposition of semen succeeded in 31 ewes and 27 (87,1%) lambed. In the 18 remaining ewes the semen was depposited in the cervix and 9 (50%) lambed. Totally 73,5% of the ewes in this group lambed.  相似文献

SUMMARY Of 87 Dorset ewes injected at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy with either 125 μg or 250 μg of the prostaglandin F analogue, cloprostenol, 72 (83%) were detected in oestrus by teaser rams within 7 days. A total of 60 ewes mated with fertile rams 14 to 28 days after treatment and 36 of these (60%) subsequently lambed. Thirty-eight ewes mated with fertile rams 29 to 56 days after treatment and 30 of these (79%) subsequently lambed. The difference in fertility between the 2 periods was not significant.
Six additional ewes which did not respond to the cloprostenol lambed normally within 6 weeks. They were more than 100 days pregnant when treated.
In ewes which first exhibited oestrus by 7 days of treatment, plasma progesterone concentrations fell from near 4 ng/ml to 0.6 ng/ml within 48 h of treatment. In ewes not detected in oestrus progesterone concentrations did not decrease to similar low levels (1.4 ng/ml; t-test p < 0.005). Concentrations in the 6 ewes treated near 100 days of pregnancy dropped from 7.4 to 4.4 ng/ml over 48 h. Overall, the progesterone concentrations indicated that 92% of ewes treated at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy experienced rapid luteolysis in response to the cloprostenol.
There were no differences between the 2 doses of cloprostenol in the responses or subsequent fertility of the ewes.  相似文献

Twenty Polypay-sired ewes (Group P) and 14 Suffolk ewes (Group S) were bled at 48-h intervals for 10 d beginning on April 6, 1989, and the serum was assayed for progesterone to determine which ewes were anestrous; 9/20 Group P ewes were anestrous, compared with 14/14 Group S ewes (P less than .001). Catheters were placed into the jugular vein of anestrous ewes from both breed groups (eight of Group P, seven of Group S), and samples of serum were collected at 12-min intervals for 4 h. Then, the ewes were exposed to mature, intact rams, and additional samples were taken at 12-min intervals for 4 h after ram exposure. The serum was later analyzed to determine the secretion of LH in response to ram introduction. After the acute bleeding period, all Group P and Group S ewes were commingled and exposed to a ram continuously for 42 d. Samples of serum were collected thrice weekly and analyzed for progesterone to monitor ovulatory response to ram introduction through the 42-d period. In addition, breeding activity and lambing data were recorded. When all Group P ewes were compared to Group S ewes, a greater proportion (P less than .001) of Group P ewes were mated (20/20 vs 3/13; one Group S ewe died during the 42-d mating period) by the end of the 42-d period and more (P less than .001) ewes lambed in the fall (17/20 Group P vs 2/13 Group S).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) and pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the reproductive performance (fertility, prolificacy and fecundity) of ewes previously treated with fluorogestone acetate (FGA) and PMSG. In the first experiment, 29 ewes were synchronized for estrus with FGA and PMSG but not bred at the postsynchronization estrus. On day 10 of the first post-synchronization estrous cycle, they were injected IM with 15 mg PGF2 alpha and 500 IU PMSG and exposed to experienced, fertile, raddled rams. Twenty-four of the 29 ewes (83%) had viable fetuses 9 weeks after the PGF2 alpha-PMSG treatment. In the second experiment, 64 ewes were treated with FGA-PMSG, and 33 were exposed to fertile, raddled rams at the synchronized estrus. A second group of 31 ewes was not bred at the synchronized estrus, but on day 12 of the postsynchronized estrous cycle, they were injected IM with 15 mg PGF2 alpha and 500 IU PMSG and exposed to fertile, raddled rams. Sixty-six percent of the 33 ewes lambed in the FGA-PMSG-treated group and 60% of the 31 ewes lambed in the PGF2 alpha-PMSG-treated group. Differences in reproductive performance between these two treatment groups were not statistically significant. The results suggest that the PGF2 alpha-PMSG treatment combination does not adversely affect reproductive performance of ewes.  相似文献

Two accelerated lambing systems, Morlam using Morlam sheep (USDA, Beltsville 1966 to 1975) and Camal using Dorset ewes (Cornell 1978 to 1981), were evaluated for first lambing ages, interlambing intervals and conception probabilities. Morlam ewes were continuously exposed to rams over the year, while Camal Dorset ewes were exposed every other month. Morlam lambs were mated as early as 367 d of age and Camal Dorset lambs as early as 340 d. Early lambing was associated with higher rates of perinatal mortality (P greater than .05) and smaller litter size (P less than .01). Lambing years among Morlam ewes and season of birth of Camal Dorset ewes influenced (P less than .01) their first lambing ages. Lambing intervals averaged 293 and 303 d among Morlam and Camal Dorset ewes, respectively. Age at first lambing and season in which the previous lambing occurred with influential factors (P less than .01) on lambing intervals of Morlam ewes; longer intervals resulted when ewe lambs were mated at early ages (less than 12 mo), and when the previous lambing occurred in winter. Estimates of conditional probabilities of conception by month given the occurrence of estrus, reflected seasonal changes in both systems. The overall probability of conception for the Morlam system (P = .16) was relatively higher than that for the Camal Dorset system (P = .14); numbers of lambings per ewe per yr were 1.28 and 1.21, respectively. Estimates of heritability for age at first lambing, lambing interval and conception probability were .31, .06 and .30, respectively.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 45 fine-wool ewes received (sc) either 0, 50 or 100 mg epostane (3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase inhibitor) to examine effects on return to estrus and conception rates. Treatments were imposed on d 10 of an estrous cycle (estrus = d 0) and jugular blood samples were collected once daily on d 8 and 9, twice daily on d 10 through 13 and once daily from d 14 until first post-treatment estrus or d 20 (15 ewes/treatment). Intensive samples were obtained hourly for 6 h after treatment (d 10; five ewes/treatment). Serum progesterone (P4) before treatment was similar among groups; but by 2 h after treatment, epostane-treated ewes had lower (P less than .10) values than controls. By 6 h post-treatment, serum P4 in ewes receiving 50 (1.0 ng/ml) and 100 (.9 ng/ml) mg epostane was well below control values (3.2 ng/ml). By 7 d after treatment, 93.3% of ewes treated with 50 mg epostane had recycled compared with 66.7 and 33.3% of those receiving 100 and 0 mg, respectively (P less than .10). Similarly, 93.3, 53.3 and 26.7% of ewes receiving 50, 100 or 0 mg epostane, respectively, lambed to breeding within 7 d of treatment (P less than .05). Overall conception rates during a 34-d breeding season were similar among groups. Preweaning performance of offspring did not differ among maternal treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to investigate experimentally the occurrence of periparturient nematode egg rise in ewes and the hormonal modulation of Haemonchus contortus infections. In the first experiment, fall-bred and winter-bred pregnant (n = 4 and 14, respectively) and nonpregnant (n = 5 and 29, respectively) ewes were treated with anthelmintic and were pastured together on fields that were contaminated with H contortus. Three weeks before lambing, all ewes were placed in concrete pens; fecal egg counts for the winter-bred group were obtained on alternate days. Pregnant and lactating ewes had significantly larger numbers (P less than 0.01) of H contortus eggs than did the nonpregnant controls 1 week before and after lambing. Lactating, fall-bred ewes had significantly (P less than 0.01) more adult worms in their abomasum through natural acquisition than the nonpregnant controls. In the second experiment, fall-bred and winter-bred, helminth-free, pregnant (n = 4 and 8, respectively) and nonpregnant (n = 3 and 15, respectively) ewes were inoculated on 5 alternate days, beginning 70 days after breeding with 20,000 infective H contortus larvae. The ewes were maintained on concrete pens throughout pregnancy. Fecal egg counts were significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in pregnant ewes, beginning 1 week before lambing until 1 week after lambing. Abomasums of lactating ewes from both lambing seasons yielded significantly (P less than 0.01) more adult worms at necropsy than nonpregnant ewes. In the third experiment, ewes were ovariectomized (n = 15) or sham-operated (n = 9); half of the control ewes were bred.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
