A 10.5-year-old domestic shorthair presented with a history of progressive inappetence, lethargy and elevated respiratory rate. Clinical and diagnostic findings confirmed the presence of a chylothorax with evidence of a mass or collapsed lung within the right cranial thorax. Computed tomography, sternotomy and histopathology confirmed the presence of a right middle lung lobe torsion associated with a chylothorax. The torsion was successfully managed with surgical removal of the affected lung lobe, and the patient continues to be asymptomatic 6 months postoperatively.  相似文献

A two-year-old, male, neutered, domestic shorthair cat was presented after suspected trauma. Diaphragmatic rupture with concomitant displacement of the right kidney into the thorax was diagnosed using ultrasound and intravenous urography. Avulsion of the renal pedicle and diaphragmatic rupture were confirmed and treated surgically with excellent outcome.  相似文献

An 11-year-old cat was evaluated because of dyspnea. Since 11 months of age, the cat had hyperextensibility of the skin consistent with cutaneous asthenia. Radiographic examination revealed a diaphragmatic hernia with intestinal loops in the thorax. Electron microscopic examination of skin specimens revealed collagen fibers of highly variable diameter, consistent with cutaneous asthenia. The diaphragmatic hernia was surgically repaired and healed well. Four weeks later, a left-sided perineal hernia was repaired surgically, and 4 months later, a right-sided perineal hernia was repaired surgically and colopexy and cystopexy were performed. All surgical procedures were successful and tissues healed well. Dermatosparaxis is a rare hereditary disorder that commonly results in cutaneous fragility and hyperextensibility in affected animals. The diagnosis depends on clinical findings and light and electron microscopic changes in affected tissues. Surgical repair can be performed successfully in an affected cat, and healing of incisions can occur without complications.  相似文献

Colic in neonatal foals is common and unusual causes of colic are not rare. The case reported in this issue by Tapio et al. (2012 ) is a good example of an unusual cause of neonatal colic which presents both a diagnostic challenge and unusual consequences. Gastrointestinal disease, especially colic, ranks as one of the most common reasons why foals require veterinary attention during their first week of life, beyond the initial post natal examination. Foals with colic present a special diagnostic challenge, especially to the practitioner who might not have extensive experience in neonatal medicine. With the often rapid progression of neonatal diseases it is important to make a rapid and accurate assessment.  相似文献

A 6 yr old domestic longhair cat was evaluated for progressive weight loss, weakness, and dyspnea. Results of a physical examination and electrocardiogram were suggestive of cardiac disease. Thoracic radiographs revealed pleural effusion, which thoracocentesis revealed was consistent with chyle. An echocardiogram was performed, and aortic valve endocarditis with secondary aortic insufficiency was presumptively diagnosed. The cat was treated with broad-spectrum oral antibiotics and palliative cardiac medications. Two days after discharge, the cat's dyspnea returned, and it died suddenly. Histopathology and culture confirmed Pseudomonas bacterial endocarditis of the aortic valve. Bacterial endocarditis in the cat has rarely been reported in the literature. This case described heart failure and chylothorax resulting from bacterial endocarditis.  相似文献

A 9-year-old, male castrated cat was presented with labored breathing and lethargy of 5 d duration. Idiopathic chylothorax was diagnosed based on clinical signs, thoracic radiographs, and thoracentesis. Partial resolution of the pleural effusion followed treatment with rutin, a benzopyrone extracted from plants. The etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease are discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Orotracheal intubation is a commonly performed procedure in the cat, but it is not without complications. Tracheal rupture has been reported in cats, but trauma to the arytenoids from intubation has not been documented. OBSERVATIONS: An otherwise healthy, 5-year-old male domestic shorthair cat presented for total ear canal ablation to resolve intractable otitis media and externa. The cat was premedicated with glycopyrrolate, hydromorphone, and acepromazine. Anesthesia was induced with diazepam and ketamine, and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. During orotracheal intubation, the larynx was poorly visualized and excessive force was used to perform intubation. Subsequently, blood was observed in the larynx and laryngoscopy revealed a tear lateral to the patient's right arytenoid which had been created during intubation. The larynx was re-intubated normally and the cat suffered no obvious ill effects from the trauma to the larynx. CONCLUSIONS: Direct observation and proper technique must be employed during orotracheal intubation in cats in an attempt to avoid laryngeal trauma.  相似文献

Chylothorax is an uncommon condition of dogs and cats defined by the accumulation of chylous effusion within the pleural space. Chylothorax has been experimentally created in dogs and cats by ligation of the cranial vena cava and has been reported to occur spontaneously in dogs with naturally occurring obstruction of the cranial vena cava. In the cat of this report, iatrogenic chylothorax was caused by surgical ligation and transection of the left brachiocephalic vein during a tracheal resection and anastomosis procedure. The chylous effusion resolved with medical management 9 weeks after surgery.  相似文献

A 8.5 year old castrated female domestic short-haired cat was presented because of progressive dyspnea, inappetence and weight loss. Special examinations revealed a chylothorax. In addition a restrictive cardiomyopathy was suspected. The cat was euthanized. The histopathologic examination of the heart confirmed the diagnosis of restrictive cardiomyopathy. The examination of the ductus thoracicus showed a intramural fibrosis with additional edema and a interstitial partly perivascular inflammation. The coherence between feline cardiopathy and chylothorax was discussed speculatively in previous reports. In this report we show a possible aetiopathology.  相似文献

Mesenteric lymphography was used to identify and ligate the thoracic duct in a 1-year-old Himalayan cat with chylothorax. Lymphography revealed the thoracic duct to be intact; however, multiple dilated lymphatics, indicative of lymphangiectasia were evident in the cranial portion of the thorax. Hemostatic clips were used to ligate the thoracic duct. The effusion stopped, and 9 months after surgery, effusion has not recurred.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 Horses were examined and treated because of sudden onset of signs of abdominal pain. CLINICAL FINDINGS: All horses had a retrosternal (Morgagni) hernia involving the right side of the diaphragm. In each horse, the large colon was incarcerated in a right muscular defect in the diaphragm with a large hernial sac. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Definitive surgical repair of the hernia was not performed during the initial celiotomy. The hernia was repaired with mesh herniorrhaphy, but without resection of the hernia sac in 2 horses. For 1 horse, conservative management was applied. In the 2 horses treated with surgical correction, no major postoperative complications developed, and all 3 horses have been free of signs of abdominal pain. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Horses with retrosternal hernias involving the diaphragm can develop clinical signs of intermittent obstruction of the large colon and chronic colic. In horses, retrosternal diaphragmatic hernias appear to develop exclusively in the right ventral aspect of the diaphragm and could represent an embryologic defect of diaphragm formation. Affected horses can be successfully treated with mesh herniorrhaphy or, in some instances, with conservative management.  相似文献
