The life history of an increasingly important pelagic commercial and sport fish, the Talang queenfish, Scomberoides commersonnianus, was studied in northern Australia to investigate the stock status and assess current management of the species using minimum legal lengths (MLL). Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 1404 mm FL, K = 0.10 year−1 and t0 = −1.21 year−1. There was no significant difference in growth between sexes. Ages ranged from 1 to 11 years with age composition differing between the commercial (mainly 6–7 years) and sport fishery (mainly 2–4 years). Females matured (L50) at 635 mm FL and 4–5 years. Spawning occurred between August and March when mature females were estimated to produce 259,488–2,859,935 eggs per spawning. Natural mortality (M) was estimated as 0.16–0.26 year−1, while the combined fishing mortality (Fcurrent) from commercial and sport fisheries was 0.38–0.48 year−1. Yield-per-recruit analyses revealed that under current MLL limits (no MLL or 45 cm TL) and natural mortality (M = 0.16, 0.2 and 0.26 year−1), Fcurrent exceeded the reference points Fmax (0.15–0.22 year−1) and F0.1 (0.10–0.15 year−1), suggesting the stock may be growth overfished if the current situation remains unchanged. Although a stock–recruitment relationship is unknown, spawning stock biomass-per-recruit analysis indicates the stock may also be recruitment overfished since Fcurrent exceeded the reference points F25% (0.19–0.24 year−1) and F40% (0.11–0.15 year−1). Increasing the MLL corresponding to L50 of females (70 cm TL) will greatly improve the yield and long-term sustainability of the stock, and also enhance the sport fishery by increasing the number of larger trophy fish.  相似文献

Estimating rates of mortality is important for assessing stocks and for effectively managing seafood resources. This study reports the first estimates of rates of instantaneous fishing mortality (F) and natural mortality (M) for the commercially important school prawn, Metapenaeus macleayi. Replicated tag-recapture experiments were conducted on two stocks (Clarence River and Wallis Lake) to estimate the catchability coefficient (q) and F, whilst M was estimated from meta-analyses. Experiments were conducted across spatial and temporal scales to consider variability between stocks and variability between fisheries targeting this resource. The catchability coefficient was fitted to tag-recapture data in a population model across a range of M values (0.001-0.025 per day) and average daily F values were calculated. Values of q ranged between 2.03E−04 and 5.43E−02 and, 1.29E−04 and 3.41E−03 for the Clarence River and Wallis Lake stocks, respectively. Average daily F ranged between 2.86E−03 and 1.69 for the Clarence stock and 1.71E−03 and 3.44E−02 for the Wallis stock. With one exception (the November 2004 experiment) there were no differences in q and F values between experiments conducted on the Wallis Lake stock. For the Clarence stock values of q and F varied between years and within years. Factors thought to contribute to this variability were changes in prawn behaviour, differences in sizes of prawns tagged between experiments and differences in the survival of tagged prawns. The catchability coefficient for the Clarence River stock was weakly correlated to greater rates of river discharge. Estimates of F for the Wallis stock, the Clarence stock in 2004-05 and estimates of M were comparable to those reported for other penaeid fisheries world wide. There was no consistent pattern in comparisons of q and F values between the predominantly trawling operation of the Clarence River fishery and the seine netting of the fishery in Wallis Lake.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption and ammonia production in elvers of varying growth rates were studied. The allometric equation describing the relationship between oxygen consumption and weight is y =00.638 x0,525, where y is the oxygen consumption (mg/h) and x is the mass (g). The weight specific allometric equation for the relationship between ammonia excretion and weight is yx = 0.0129 x0,465. Slow growing elvers were found to have higher respiratory rates (0.737 mg O2 h?1 g?1) than would be expected for their size.  相似文献

We developed limit and target harvest control rules based on an age-, sex- and stage-structured model for managing the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) stock. We determined an Fx% (F resulting in a spawning biomass-per-recruit equivalent to x% of virgin spawning biomass-per-recruit) as a proxy for FMSY and a minimum spawning stock biomass to open the fishery to incorporate them into the control rules. We evaluated the selected limit and target control rule parameters under stochastic simulations by considering various performance statistics. Because of the complexity in determining an effective female spawning biomass that involves a mating ratio, we choose the total mature male biomass (MMB) regardless of crab size as the spawning index to develop the stock–recruitment relationship for stochastic simulations. The MMB based F37% appears a reasonable proxy for limit control rule while F45% appears a reasonable target control rule. The corresponding limit and target harvest rates of legal size crab when the standing stock MMB exceeds the proxy MSY level are approximately 36% and 25%, respectively. The difficulty in establishing an appropriate stock–recruitment relationship for this stock was recognized hence a precautionary F45% target level was chosen. Scenarios under biomass independent random recruitment were also investigated and performances of F37% and F45% control rules under this hypothesis behaved similar to those observed under S–R model based simulations.  相似文献

Abstract Estimates of the growth parameters (L and K), mortality coefficients (Z, M and F) and exploitation rate (E) for the blackspot snapper, Lutjanus fulviflamma (Forsskål) from the Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) and adjacent intensively fished areas in Tanzania were determined. Sectioned otoliths showed that L. fulviflamma in the MIMP attained a maximum age of 18 years, with a high proportion of fish between 6 and 10 years old. The maximum age was 8 years in the intensively fished areas, with a preponderance of 2‐ and 4‐year‐old fish. The size structures of the populations in the MIMP and that in the intensively fished areas were markedly different, with the MIMP fish averaging (±SE) 211.4 ± 0.38 mm TL, but 154.6 ± 0.32 mm TL in the intensively fished areas. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 290.3 mm TL, K = 0.15 year?1 and t0 = ?2.7 years. There was no significant difference in growth between the four populations (L: F‐stat = 0.14, P = 1.000, and K: F‐stat = 0.26, P = 0.992). Total mortality was 0.55 and 1.64 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively, natural mortality 0.27 year?1 and fishing mortality 0.18 and 1.37 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.51 and 0.84 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The artisanal seine net fishery is directed mainly at younger fish in the intensively fished areas resulting in growth overfishing. The protracted life span, the slow growth and natural mortality rates imply that L. fulviflamma is vulnerable to overfishing and that the protection provided by the park, although limited, is vital for sustaining the fishery at Mafia Island.  相似文献

Three F1 families of the bay scallop, Argopecten irradians, were produced from one, two and 10 individuals. The genetic changes in these populations, which suffered recent and different levels of bottleneck, were analysed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) techniques. In the parental stock, a total of 330 bands were detected using seven AFLP primer pairs, and 70% of the loci were polymorphic. All F1 groups had a significantly lower proportion of polymorphic loci when compared with the initial stock, and loss of the rare loci and reduction in heterozygosity both occurred. The progeny of the larger population (i.e., N=10) exhibited a lesser amount of genetic differentiation compared with the progeny from N=2, which showed lesser differentiation than progeny from N=1. The effective population sizes (Ne) in N=1, 2 and 10 were estimated as 1.50, 1.61 and 2.49. Based on regression analysis, we recommend that at least 340 individuals be used in hatchery populations to maintain genetic variation.  相似文献

Egg content originating from ruptured ova progressively reduced the success of fertilization in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) eggs. The salmon egg differs in ionic composition from the ovarian fluid in exhibiting higher K+ and Mg2+ and lower Na+ concentrations. Normal ovarian fluid induced spermatozoan motility whereas ovarian fluid contaminated with egg content progressively lost the ability to induce motility. Loss of motility was related to decreasing Na+K+ ratios in the ovarian fluid, indicating that reduced fertility may be caused by inactivation of sperm cells in the insemination medium. Removal of contaminated ovarian fluid by rinsing ova in isotonic media induced spermatozoan motility and restored fertility completely. The use of an isotonic NaHCO3 solution for rinsing of ova is suggested as a routine procedure for artificial insemination in salmonids where the presence of broken eggs is suspected.  相似文献

A series of outdoor, continuous-flow seawater cultures (50 l; 0.23 m2) were used to investigate the effects of culture density (kg/m2), nutrient loading (total nitrogen input/day) with both NH4+N and NO3?N, and turnover rate (flow rateculture volume) on the growth and yield of Gracilaria tikvahiae. Although specific growth rates as high as 60% per day were recorded for Gracilaria at low densities (0.4 kg wet wt/m2) in summer conditions, maximum year-round yields were obtained at densities of 2.0–3.0 kg wet wt/m2. Above a minimal daily nitrogen loading the yield of Gracilaria was independent of (1) nutrient concentration, (2) nitrogen loading, or (3) whether nitrogen was in the form of NH4+N or NO3?N, but was (4) highly dependent upon flow rate. The time weighted mean annual production during 1976–1977 was 34.8 g dry wt/m2·day or 127 t/ha·yr based on 12-months continuous operation at near optimal densities and flow rates in the non-nutrient limited culture system.  相似文献

Growing of Pyropia haitanensis, a commercially farmed macroalga, usually increases their densities greatly during cultivation in natural habitats. To explore how the increased algal densities affect their photosynthetic responses to rising CO2, we compared the growth, cell components and photosynthesis of the thalli of P. haitanensis under a matrix of pCO2 levels (ambient CO2, 400 ppm; elevated CO2, 1,000 ppm) and biomass densities [low, 1.0 g fresh weight (FW) L?1; medium, 2.0 g FW L?1; high, 4.0 g FW L?1]. Under ambient CO2, the relative growth rate (RGR) was 5.87% d?1, 2.32% d?1 and 1.51% d?1 in low, medium and high densities, and elevated CO2 reduced the RGR by 27%, 25% and 12% respectively. Maximal photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM) was higher in low than in high densities, so were the light‐utilized efficiency (α), saturation irradiance (EK) and maximum relative electron transfer rate (rETRmax). Elevated CO2 enhanced the FV/FM in low density but not in higher densities, as well as the α, EK and rETRmax. In addition, elevated CO2 reduced the content of chlorophyll a and enhanced that of carotenoids, but unaffected phycoerythrin, phycocyanin and soluble proteins. Our results indicate that the increased algal densities reduced both the growth and the photosynthesis of P. haitanensis and alleviated the elevated CO2‐induced negative impact on growth and positive impact on photosynthesis. Moreover, the elevated CO2‐induced reduction on growth and promotion on photosynthesis indicates that rising CO2 may enhance the loss of photosynthetic products of P. haitanensis through releasing organic matters.  相似文献

Gulf menhaden, Brevoortia patronus, plays a key ecological role in the northern Gulf of Mexico and supports the second largest commercial fishery by weight in the United States. Here we describe that fishery and propose biological reference points (BRPs) for its management. The BRPs represent targets and limits of both fishing mortality rate (F) and population fecundity (Ψ), where target is defined as the management goal, and limit, a value to be avoided (F < FLimit and Ψ > ΨLimit). We assess stock status relative to the BRPs by fitting a statistical catch-age model to fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data spanning 1964–2004. Results indicate that in the terminal year neither limit reference point is exceeded (F2004/FLimit = 0.75 and Ψ2004/ΨLimit = 1.86). Of possible concern, however, is a recent increase in fishing mortality and decrease in population fecundity. With these trends, terminal values exceed their targets (F2004/FTarget = 1.16 and Ψ2004/ΨTarget = 0.93), although by little relative to uncertainty in the estimates. Sensitivity analyses show these results are robust to model assumptions.  相似文献

The cytosol and nuclear extract of gill tissue obtained from laboratory held Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar manifested saturable cortisol binding of high affinity and low capacity (cytosol: Ka = 0.198 ± 0.024 × 109/M, Nmax = 116.8 ± 20.8 fmol/mg protein; nuclear extract: Ka = 0.823 ± 0.057 × 107/M, Nmax = 1563 ± 330 fmol/mg protein; n = 4). The cytosol receptor activity displayed high steroid and tissue specificity and a single binding peak at 191,000 Da following gel permeation chromatography. Atlantic salmon exposed for 3 or 8 months to waters from the Medway River (pH about 5.1), the Westfield River (pH about 4.8) and calcium carbonate treated Westfield River (pH about 5.6) showed no gill cytosol receptor activity. Cortisol receptor activity in the gill nuclear extracts from fish in limed Westfield River water in December (3 months) was less than half the activity in the fish treated with Medway River water (p < 0.05) although the plasma cortisol values were not different. In May (8 months), the plasma cortisol of fish in limed water was almost twice that of the fish held in acid Westfield River water (p = 0.058).  相似文献

Solea senegalensis is a fish species in an early stage of domestication. A commercial hatchery in southern Spain experienced a dramatic failure in spawning and embryo survival, after incorporation into the broodstock of fish reared in their hatchery. To assess the impact of management on the stock quality, a population genetics study was made of adult broodstock present at this hatchery in 2000. The broodstock was composed of a group of fish of wild origin and two more groups from F1 progeny. A set of eight microsatellite loci was used to compare genetic variability among the three groups and to establish the relationships between pairs of individuals within each group.Individuals from F1 origin showed a substantial reduction in genetic variability when compared to those from the wild. There was a greater than 50% decrease in the number of alleles per locus corrected by sample size and 16% and 26% reductions in He values in the two F1 groups, respectively. The degree of genetic relationship between individuals, evaluated by the relatedness estimator, rxy, and by graphical approaches, revealed a high proportion, almost 75%, of full-sibs and half-sibs in both F1 groups, which might account for the reduction in overall variability. The high proportion of siblings also suggests a reproductive pattern in this stock in which few individuals breed successfully. This mating behaviour, along with factors inherent to selection and management systems, might be responsible for the negative effects on the reproductive capacity of the stock.  相似文献

为了评估银姑鱼资源开发状态,实验根据2016年在浙江南部海域底拖网的调查数据,研究了银姑鱼的生活史参数,并基于单位补充量模型对其资源状态进行评价,进而探讨不同自然死亡系数和捕捞选择性对资源评价结果的影响。结果显示,银姑鱼渐近体长估计值为25.36 cm,生长速率为0.32/年,当前开捕体长(13.52 cm)远小于其初次性成熟体长(17.79 cm);自然死亡系数估计值为0.74,总死亡系数为2.62,当前捕捞死亡系数为1.88。基于以上参数,构建了单位补充量渔获量YPR模型和单位补充量亲体生物量SSBR模型,随着F的增加,YPR先增大后减小,而SSBR则减少。银姑鱼生物学参考点F0.1为0.78,Fmax为3.43,F20%为0.66,F40%为0.33,可知当前捕捞强度远大于防止补充型过度捕捞警戒线F20%。敏感性分析结果显示,自然死亡系数的不确定性将明显影响单位补充量模型的研究结果和相关生物学参考点的估算值,而不同选择性系数,尤其是开捕体长,也直接影响单位补充量模型的结果。研究表明,当前浙江南部近海银姑鱼种群已处于补充型过度捕捞状态,为维持渔业资源的可持续发展,建议适当减小开发力度,增大开捕体长;为提高资源状态评价的准确性,建议减小自然死亡系数的不确定性。本研究可为银姑鱼资源的养护和管理提供科学建议。  相似文献

The east Atlantic-Mediterranean penaeid Melicertus kerathurus constitutes a valuable resource for Mediterranean fisheries. In recent years, its world production is almost totally based on the yields from Greece and Tunisia. A two-year study of prawn stock in Thermaikos Gulf (NW Aegean Sea) provided information on age, growth and mortality of the species. M. kerathurus exhibits a marked sexual growth dimorphism, with females showing an overall wider size range and greater size than males. Mean monthly size, CLmax were also in favor of females. Monthly age classes varied from one to four for females and from one to three for males, and corresponded to three generations (0+, 1+, 2+). New generation (0+) cohorts recruited into fishery in waves, from late summer to February. According to the von Bertalanffy growth curve, females grow larger than males, but there is a prominent seasonal growth oscillation in both sexes (females: CL = 62.48, K = 1.15, C = 0.87, WP = 0.16, Rn = 0.170; males: CL = 47.78, K = 1.28, C = 0.97, WP = 0.12, Rn = 0.205). Growth performance indices (φ′, φ) and longevity were in favor of females. K values for both sexes in Thermaikos Gulf are the highest reported for the species, suggesting a higher growth rate and a lower longevity. Estimated values for total, natural and fishery mortality were greater in males. In both sexes, an exploitation rate E > 0.5 was found, implying an intense fishing impact on M. kerathurus stock in Thermaikos Gulf. Intense exploitation in other parts of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, along with the replacement of the species by Eritrean penaeid prawns in the eastern Mediterranean, has resulted in a severe reduction in catches, in most countries. Thus, existing stocks of M. kerathurus should be considered as potentially endangered, and species-specific initiatives towards sustainable management of this resource should be implemented.  相似文献

Gametogenesis, spawning and larval production of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis L. were studied in sublittoral beds in Ballinakill Harbour and Kilkieran Bay, Co. Galway, from April 1977 to November 1978 and from November 1978 to May 1980 respectively. Histol ogical preparations of gonads and percentages of oysters brooding larvae were used to monitor breeding.Maturation began in March/April with ripe gametes appearing in some oysters in mid-May. Incubating oysters were observed from mid-June to August/September. Spent oysters were numerous in September. Gametogenesis was at a minimum from October to February depending on the year of study. Ripeness as measured by four different parameters was observed to peak around 29 June 1977 and 4 July 1978 in Ballinakill Harbour, and on 10 July 1979 in Kilkieran Bay. The onset of maximum ripeness in both populations could be predicted using the formula:

where D is the thermal constant in degree-days, n = the number of days required to reach ripeness, ti = temperature to which the oysters were exposed daily (°C) and t0 is the developmental zero for gametogenesis. The mean thermal constant as calculated from the gametogenesis study was 554.52 ± 44.52 degree-days. Growth and mortality of adult Strombus gigas L. was studied in a population offshore of La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Adult queen conchs do not grow in shell length, but only in shell thickness. Growth in thickness of the flared shell-lip was measured during a 2-year mark-recapture study and modelled using the von Bertalanffy growth function. Model parameters were K=0.3706 year−1 and L (asymptotic lip-thickness) =54.9 mm; the third von Bertalanffy parameter, t0, cannot be obtained from mark-recapture data alone. Growth in tissue, meat and shell weights of adults were determined using the von Bertalanffy growth function in conjunction with regression equations for weights versus shell length and/or lip thickness. Total instantaneous mortality in adults, determined using von Bertalanffy parameters and lip-thickness frequency analysis, was 1.66 year−1. Subtracting a previous estimate of fishing mortality (F=1.14 year−1) yielded a natural mortality (M) of 0.52 year−1. Given an average age at maturation, defined by the formation of the flared shell-lip, of 3.2 years, the age of first reproduction was estimated at 3.6 years, but could be as much as 4 years.  相似文献

Nitrogen excretion (total N, NH3 and urea-N) across the gills (ZN) and in the urine (UN) as well as in the feces (FN) was measured for individual rainbow trout (250–550 g) in relation to dietary protein and lipid. Total N excreted across the gills represented over 96% of the combined ZN and UN. The proportion of N excreted as NH3N was much higher across the gills than in the urine. For the four diets of 35 or 49% protein and 10 or 20% lipid fed at 0.5 and 1.0% body weight d?1, total N excretion (ZN + UN) was proportional to N intake raised to the power of 0.383. N excretion was slightly but not significantly reduced by high dietary lipid levels. The proportion of NH3N excreted (ZN + UN) relative to ingested N increased with dietary protein concentration at both meal sizes. Urea-N relative to N intake did not differ with dietary protein or lipid concentration. Fecal-N relative to intake varied inversely with dietary N and was independent of dietary lipid at both meal sizes. Digestibility varied directly with dietary concentration of protein and lipid and inversely with starch. Recovered N (RN) was approximately one-half of N intake for all diets at both meal sizes.  相似文献

A solar-heated greenhouse containing recirculating fish production systems was used to culture Tilapia nilotica and T. aurea. Fish production was maximized by sequential rearing, grading, and restocking of fish at high densities to utilize each system fully. Marketable-size (167 g) fish were produced from 29-g fingerlings in 137 days. No reproduction was recorded.Spawning in February was induced naturally by a 16L8D photoperiod, water temperature of 24°C, and reducing stock density.  相似文献
