Wry nose is a rare condition. The resultant deviation of the nasal septum and maxilla/premaxilla often complicates deglutition and respiration. Traditional treatment consists of internal fixation with pins after an osteotomy and a rib graft. A 17‐month‐old Arab yearling was presented for evaluation of deviation of the maxilla and nasal septum. This deviation was managed using an external fixation device after bilateral osteotomy of the maxilla/premaxilla and reduction of the deviation. Partial resection of the nasal septum by a dorsal approach was also performed. The dental malocclusion and respiratory noise were corrected.  相似文献

This case report describes unilateral supernumerary digits of the forelimb in two foals. A diagnosis of polydactyly of the right forelimb in one case and of the left forelimb in the other was made by clinical examination and radiographic interpretation. Surgical excision was performed under general anaesthesia with a good cosmetic and functional outcome in both cases.  相似文献

Three horses with carpal instability due to comminuted second carpal bone fractures (Cases 1 and 3), fracture of the head of the second metacarpal bone (Case 1) or comminuted fractures of the fourth carpal bone, ulnar and intermediate carpal bones (Case 2) were treated by minimally invasive approach for partial (Cases 1 and 3) or pancarpal (Case 2) joint arthrodesis, using locking compression plates. The joint cartilage was removed by either an arthroscopic approach (middle carpal joint and antebrachiocarpal joint) or a percutaneous drilling technique (carpometacarpal joint). Two or 3 locking compression plates were contoured to the dorsolateral, dorsomedial and dorsoaxial aspects of the carpal joints using a custom‐made tunnelling tool and a minimally invasive tunnelling technique, and the screws were positioned through stab incisions. All cases recovered well, were lame free at the walk, were able to trot and gallop and could be used for leisure and pasture activities (partial carpal arthrodesis) and breeding (pancarpal arthrodesis). Post‐operative x‐rays showed progressive joint fusion after 12 months (Case 1), 5 months (Case 2) and 10 months (Case 3). Case 2 with a pancarpal arthrodesis showed a mechanical lameness at the walk due to the inability to flex the carpus. Carpal flexion after carpometacarpal and middle carpal arthrodesis in Case 1 was calculated to be 42.6° and 44° in Case 3.  相似文献

This report describes the successful surgical repair of a transverse, displaced scapula fracture in a foal. A 3.5 mm locking compression plate (LCP) was used on either side of the spine of the scapula. The suprascapular nerve was apparent upon dissection as it passed directly over the fracture line and care was taken to leave it intact, although the fracture line itself caused some irritation. The foal recovered without long‐term nerve damage and is sound at 1.5 years post surgery.  相似文献

Reports of tracheal injuries in horses are rare compared with those in small animals and humans. Although uncommon, tracheal injuries can be life threatening if they progress or are not treated. Different treatments have been described depending on the severity of the problem. This report describes the successful surgical treatment of three cases of closed tracheal lacerations through an intraluminal surgical approach.  相似文献

This report describes a case of pantarsal arthrodesis for the treatment of a comminuted fracture and luxation of the equine tarsus using a locking compression plate (LCP). A 20-year-old, 250-kg Welsh Pony cross presented with a severely comminuted fracture of the right tarsus. A dorsal approach to the tarsus was made and a 14-hole, 5.5-mm LCP was used to achieve arthrodesis. The pony was maintained in a full-limb cast for 30 days post-operatively. The incision healed by primary intention, and no surgical complications developed. The pony maintained excellent use of the limb and returned to pasture soundness.  相似文献

A closed mid‐diaphyseal fracture in a one‐day‐old foal was treated using a 3.5 mm locking compression plate on the cranial aspect of the radius. The foal showed good fracture healing, but a radio‐ulnar synostosis developed despite the absence of transfixation by any implant into the ulna. Four months after surgery the radiographs revealed a cubital subluxation, which was managed by an osteotomy of the ulna at the time of plate removal, allowing the ulna to adjust into a normal position. One year after surgery the foal was clinically sound; the radiographs showed good healing of the osteotomy gap as well as good remodelling of the radius; however, a slight elbow subluxation was present.  相似文献

This study reports on the effective use of a single transphyseal screw for the treatment of moderate to severe angular limb deformities (ALDs) of the fetlocks and carpi of 28 young Thoroughbred foals. The objective was to evaluate the surgical management of foals with moderate to severe ALDs treated with single transphyseal screws. Evaluation of medical records of 28 Thoroughbred foals treated with single transphyseal screws placed across the distal radial, metacarpal and metatarsal physes was undertaken. The angle of joint deviation was measured prior to implantation and at removal of the implants, and the degree of improvement was calculated. A total of 39 screws were placed: 24 in the distal metacarpus or metatarsus and 15 in the distal radial physis. Varus or valgus deformities in the fetlock improved by 4–5° over a period of 15–30 days. Varus or valgus deformities in the carpi improved by 8–11° in 11–56 days. One case failed to improve adequately due to implant infection. Single transphyseal screws were effective in treating moderate to severe varus and valgus ALD of the fetlocks and carpi in young Thoroughbred foals. Further investigation into their use in the distal radius in young foals is needed. While single transphyseal screws are almost exclusively used by some clinics in the distal metatarsal and metacarpal physes, many clinicians do not use them in the distal radial physis of young foals due to fear of over‐correction, physitis and metaphyseal collapse. This was not observed in any of our cases.  相似文献

This case report describes a technique for repair of medial collateral ligament avulsions in two horses. Both horses sustained traumatic injuries resulting in avulsion fractures at the origin of their medial tarsal and carpal collateral ligaments. This report describes the use of a knotless suture anchor to mechanically reconstruct medial collateral ligament avulsion injuries in two horses. The first horse, a 9‐year‐old Hannovarian Warmblood gelding presented for an acute nonweightbearing lameness in the right hindlimb. The injury was localised to the medial malleolus of the tibia and an avulsion fracture of the origin of the short medial collateral ligament of the tibiotarsal joint with disruption of the ligament was found on radiographs and ultrasound. The horse was taken to surgery and a reconstruction of the short medial collateral ligament was performed with a modified single row construct using a biocompatible, multistrand, long chain ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene braided composite suture tape (2 mm Fibertape) and a single knotless suture anchor (5.5 × 19.1 mm PEEK SwivelLock C). The second horse, a 5‐year‐old Thoroughbred gelding presented for an acute nonweightbearing lameness in the left forelimb. The injury was localised to the medial styloid process of the radius and an avulsion fracture of the origin of the medial collateral ligament of the antebrachial carpal joint was found on radiographs and ultrasound. The horse was taken to surgery and a similar reconstruction procedure was performed to the collateral ligament. Both horses were recovered in a Robert Jones bandage without the use of casts or splints and recovered without incident. Both horses are sound and returned to previous level of athletic performance at 18 months and 8 months, respectively.  相似文献

Evaluation of a score designed to predict sepsis in foals   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of a published score designed to predict sepsis in foals in a clinical setting and to evaluate the association of clinical and clinicopathological variables with sepsis. Design: Observational study. Retrospective for data from 1998. Prospective in 1999–2001. Setting: Foal intensive care unit of a university hospital. Animals: Client‐owned foals of less than 10 days of age, presenting from 1998 to 2001. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: Data from the history and physical examination, together with admission hematology, biochemistry and arterial blood gas analysis were used to generate the published sepsis scores. The same data were investigated for their statistical relationship with sepsis. The presence or absence of sepsis was determined from blood culture, culture of sites of suspected local infection, clinical course and/or post‐mortem examination. The modified sepsis score was calculated for 168 foals, which were classified as septic (86), non‐septic (45) or not possible to classify (37). The modified sepsis score correctly predicted sepsis in 58 out of 86 foals and non‐sepsis in 34 out of 45 foals, resulting in a sensitivity of 67%, a specificity of 76%, a positive predictive value of 84% and a negative predictive value of 55%. Abnormal neutrophil cytology, an immunoglobulin concentration of less than 400 mg/dl, and low blood glucose concentration had the strongest association with sepsis. Conclusions: The low negative predictive value of the sepsis score limited its clinical utility. The sepsis score should not be used to define sepsis in clinical studies, unless previously validated in the study center.  相似文献

Oral swab samples, serum and colostrum was taken from 15 mares and 14 of their foals, within 24 h of birth. The presence of antibody against Actinobacillus spp. isolated from the oral cavity was investigated using agar gel immunodiffusion. Antibodies against 48 out of the 77 Actinobacillus isolates from all horses in the study were present in the respective sera of 13 mares and 9 foals. In 11 mother-foal pairs, the antibody content of the foal serum was similar to that of the mare, and in 9 cases this was reflected in the antibody content of colostrum from the mare. The results indicate that an immune response to Actinobacillus spp. colonising the oral cavity is present in many adult horses and that this immune response can be transferred from mother to foal via colostrum.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of plate luting on the biomechanical properties of a broad limited contact-dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) fixation to repair osteotomized equine 3rd metacarpal (MC3) bones. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical testing of paired cadaveric equine MC3 with a mid-diaphyseal osteotomy, stabilized by LC-DCP fixation, with 1 of the pair luted with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). ANIMAL POPULATION: Ten pairs of adult equine cadaveric MC3 bones. METHODS: Ten pairs of equine MC3 were divided into 2 test groups (5 pairs each) for (1) palmarodorsal 4-point bending single cycle to failure testing and (2) palmarodorsal 4-point bending cyclic fatigue testing. The LC-DCP (8 hole, 4.5 mm) was applied to the dorsal surface of each pair of MC3 bones. All plates and screws were applied using standard AO/ASIF techniques. All MC3 bones had mid-diaphyseal osteotomies. One of the matched pairs of LC-DCP-MC3 constructs were randomly chosen to be luted with PMMA. Mean test variable values for each method were compared using a paired t-test within each group; significance was set at P<.05. RESULTS: Mean palmarodorsal 4-point bending yield bending moment, failure bending moment of the LC-DCP fixation with luting was not significantly different (P>.05) than those of the LC-DCP fixation without luting. Mean cycles to failure for palmarodorsal 4-point bending was significantly (P<.0003) greater, with a 7.2-fold increase, for the LC-DCP fixation with luting compared with the LC-DCP fixation without luting. CONCLUSION: Luting the broad LC-DCP with PMMA in the fixation osteotomized equine MC3 bones increases the fatigue life of cyclic loading for palmarodorsal 4-point bending under the in vitro conditions studied. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The cyclic fatigue data supports the conclusion that luted broad LC-DCP fixation is biomechanically superior to the non-luted broad LC-DCP fixation in osteotomized equine MC3 bones.  相似文献

Intra-articular (IA) hyaluronic acid (HA) is commonly used to treat equine arthritis. Inflammatory response or “joint flare” is a recognized potential side effect. However, the incidence and severity of inflammation following IA HA injection in horses is not well documented. This study compared the effects of two IA HA formulations of different molecular weight (MW) and a saline control on clinical signs and synovial fluid markers of inflammation in normal equine joints. Eight adult horses each had three healthy fetlock joints randomly assigned to treatment with either 1.4 mega Dalton HA, 0.8 mega Dalton HA or saline control once weekly for three weeks. Clinical evaluation and synovial fluid analysis were performed by blinded assessors. Outcomes of interest were lameness score, joint effusion score and synovial fluid white cell count and differential, total protein, viscosity and serum amyloid A. Joints injected with HA developed significant mild-to-moderate inflammatory responses often associated with lameness and joint effusion compared with saline control joints. The higher MW HA formulation elicited a significantly greater inflammatory response than the lower MW HA after the first injection. In HA injected joints, viscosity remained poor for the entire study. Both IA HA formulations in this study induced an inflammatory response in healthy equine joints. This may have implications for the use of HA in equine joints. The findings in this study are limited to the two HA formulations used. Further investigation of different HA formulations and the use of HA in normal and arthritic equine joints is warranted.  相似文献
