Strain development along radial direction was continuously determined by D—200Linear Variable Differential Transformers(L.V.D.T).When a wood specimen was put into waterand begin to swell from absolute dry moisture content to the maximum.Experiment results showthat the differences of swelling with soaking time between untreated and treated wood specimens dueto uptaking water.It would also give an indication to the effectiveness of various chemicals on thedimensional stability of modified wood.ASE of modified wood samples with SA-EP,EP and SA were found to be better than MA-AGE.SA-EP had got the best effetiveness on dimensional stabili-ty in reducing the swelling.  相似文献

Summary The critical dose above which a decrease in toughness of Western Red Cedar and Peroba wood, extracted with benzene-alcohol is noted, was determined to be approximately 0.5×106 rad lower than that for the same non-extracted species. Investigations have shown that the presence of benzene-alcohol extractives in wood raises its radiation stability. This conclusion is supported by the fact that the toughness curve which generally falls with increasing doses of absorbed irradiation shows a steeper decrease for extracted than for nonextracted wood.  相似文献

Participation of lignin in the reaction between vapor-phase formaldehyde and wood was examined by using gradually delignified wood meal. A fi rst-order rate equation was successfully applied to the weight gain data. From the estimated reaction parameters such as rate constant, k, and ultimate weight gain, a, the reactivity toward formaldehyde was discussed among wood components, and compared with that for acetylation. k decreased monotonously with progress of the elimination of lignin, suggesting that the reaction rate of lignin is dominant over that of whole wood, and the decrease in the ratio of lignin retarded the reaction of wood as a whole. On the other hand, a increased with decreasing lignin content. This may be attributable to the enhanced reactivity of the remaining lignin due to some structural changes and to the increase in the number of reactive sites in polysaccharides as a result of their exposure accompanying the elimination of lignin. The dependencies of k and a on the lignin content were not similar to the case for acetylation, probably because of the difference in the reaction phase. In vapor-phase formaldehyde treatment, the remaining lignin reacts as it is, whereas in liquid-phase acetylation it would undergo rearrangement or swelling of the structure in the reaction solution.  相似文献

In order to examine the contribution of wood components to the acetylation of wood, we acetylated wood meal that had been partially delignified. The results were analyzed in terms of the reaction kinetics. The first-order rate equation was successfully adjusted to the weight gain data. The rate constant for acetylation initially increased with progress of lignin elimination and then turned to decrease; the apparent activation energy showed the reverse tendency and ranged from about 90 to 130 kJ/mol. These results suggest that lignin elimination brings not only separation of lignin but also drastic change of the chemical and/or physical structure in the residual lignin, and this affects the reactivity of wood meal as a whole. The ultimate weight gain estimated by the regression of the rate equation showed a minimum when lignin was moderately eliminated, which was explained in terms of enhanced reactivity of lignin and lower accessibility for holocellulose than predicted. The equilibrium moisture content had a maximum when lignin was moderately eliminated. This tendency is the opposite of that observed for the ultimate weight gain, and suggests that the sites for acetylation do not always correspond to those for moisture adsorption. The pulping wood quality of Acacia melanoxylon was evaluated in relation to the presence of heartwood. The sapwood and heartwood from 20 trees from four sites in Portugal were evaluated separately at 5% stem height level in terms of chemical composition and kraft pulping aptitude. Heartwood had more extractives than sapwood ranging from 7.4% to 9.5% and from 4.0% to 4.2%, respectively, and with a heartwood-to-sapwood ratio for extractives ranging from 1.9 to 2.3. The major component of heartwood extractives was made up of ethanol-soluble compounds (70% of total extractives). Lignin content was similar in sapwood and heartwood (21.5% and 20.7%, respectively) as well as the sugar composition. Site did not influence the chemical composition. Pulping heartwood differed from sapwood in chemical and optical terms: lower values of pulp yield (53% vs 56% respectively), higher kappa number (11 vs. 7), and lower brightness (28% vs 49%). Acacia melanoxylon wood showed an overall good pulping aptitude, but the presence of heartwood should be taken into account because it decreases the raw-material quality for pulping. Summary Western hemlock heartwood contains patches of tracheids with large amounts of cellular inclusions. Microscopic and chemical examination of the wood showed several types of deposits containing the lignans matairesinol, hydroxymatairesinol and conidendrin. The deposits, which were often relatively pure individual lignans, frequently assumed different physical forms and chemical composition. A check in the wood contained three distinct forms of deposits each of which was a different lignan. Rays contained deposits physically similar to those in adjacent tracheids but, while lignans were present in the tracheids, they were not detected in the rays. Lignans lined tracheid walls as surface films and often encrusted the bordered pits. The amount of lignans in the wood was not related to wet wood zones although surface films and pit encrustations should have an influence on physical properties. The location and physical nature of lignan deposits in western hemlock heartwood indicates their biosynthesis has probably taken place at the heartwood periphery in the vicinity of the half-bordered pit.Presented at the International Wood Chemistry Symposium, Seattle, U. Summary The development of rheological models to predict creep has led to the derivation of quite complex equations that can predict creep reasonably accurately. However, these models are conceptual and are not based on a fundamental understanding of the actual deformation processes occurring within the material. The concept of modelling creep using a chemical kinetic approach is one that attempts to understand creep in wood at a molecular level and, from this, to develop models that more accurately predict creep deflections.This paper presents two models developed from chemical kinetic theory, that describe the time-dependant deformation of wood. The validity of applying these models to experimental data has been assessed by stress relaxation tests on thin samples of Sequoia sempervirens. Two stages of experimentation were carried out. In stage 1, both models were applied to the results of stress relaxation tests on 6 samples. Similar values of activation energy and activation volume were calculated by both models and a single energy barrier was found to dominate the deformation process.In stage 2, the effect of varying the initial applied stress on activation energy and activation volume was assessed by carrying out stress relaxation tests at stress levels of 25%, 30% and 35% of the short-term strength. Values of activation energy and activation were found to increase as the applied stress level decreased.Both models describe the time-dependent behaviour of wood well, however their ability to predict long-term creep deflections may be limited. Future work will develop these models further in order to improve long-term creep prediction and then apply them to the results of both creep and stress relaxation tests at a variety of stress levels and moisture contents in order to test their validity.  相似文献

Characterisation, quality assessment and property prediction are several of the major industrial challenges for widespread acceptance of thermally modified wood (TMW). This study shows the potential of the multivariate analysis of mid-infrared (MIR) spectral data for the prediction of impact strength, five mechanical parameters in bending, moisture content, weight loss, density and chemical composition of small specimens of thermally modified beech, Norway spruce and Scots pine woods. Anti-swelling efficiency was also studied using DRIFT spectroscopy for spruce wood only. Calibrations were successfully accomplished by partial least-squares regression, with R Y 2 and Q CUM2 values >0.96 for 64 out of 67 models. Predictions were also successful, with relative prediction values >0 and RMSEP:SD ratios <1 in most cases. Changes in the MIR spectra of TMW show that bands arising from the lignin environment and new bands appearing due to the degradation of carbohydrates, giving negative loadings, were related to strength loss, while those bands arising from the polysaccharides were associated with property retention. It is concluded that this approach is a powerful tool to characterise a number of properties of TMW with a single after-treatment measurement.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the present work, Eucalyptus nitens was thermally modified in an open (atmospheric pressure) and a closed (under pressure) reactor system. The effect of the changes of the chemical composition on the mechanical properties was investigated. Hemicelluloses, cellulose, lignin, extractives, acetic acid, formic acid, total phenols and the cellulose degree of polymerization (DP) as well as modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) were measured for each modification. The results indicated that the closed system modification, particularly at high pressure, presented stronger variations on the chemical structure of the modified wood than the modifications in the open system. In both modifications, MOR showed a better correlation with the chemical changes than the MOE, especially xylose, cellulose DP, lignin and total phenols. These correlations suggest a tendency of a more brittle wood in the closed system modification at high pressure than in the modifications in the open system. Results can be used as a reference for future applications of thermally modified E. nitens wood.  相似文献

A method for evaluating the influence of the operating parameters of wood machining (planing, sanding) on the quality of a finished surface was established. The influence of each of the operations involved was studied using different strategies. For the planing operation, three levels were established (Level 1, 2 and 3) by determining different values for each of the major process parameters (tool rotation speed, feed speed, depth of cut). For both, surface preparation and polishing, two levels were established with a fixed setup. Finally, as finishing products, two different transparent coatings were selected (water-borne and solvent-borne). The quantitative evaluation of the state of the surface was assessed by means of an artificial vision system for the determination of the pseudo-roughness of wood surfaces. A filtering method based on fast Fourier transforms was applied and it was possible to derive three criteria for evaluating the resulting profile.  相似文献

Summary Slow speed wood cutting tests were carried out in which cutting forces were measured as a function of applied tool-work electrical potential. The cutting tool and workpiece were electrically insulated so that there was no current flow. Understanding the state of market for modified wood as well as the forces that affect its future development will be essential for those seeking to enter the Russian market. Information on modified wood from websites of companies, research and development organisations, woodworking-oriented magazines and forums, and official Russian statistics were explored, and finally verified by personal contacts with experts. A number of modification methods have been either researched, developed or pre-commercialised during the past 15 years, but only few of them have been adopted by users. Mostly, the modification methods have been copied, further developed and commercialised from variations of thermal modification originally introduced in Western Europe. Modified wood products are still considered premium goods among Russian consumers. Political initiatives aim at increasing the share of wood in construction and renovation but also at import minimisation, which reduces the penetration of foreign producers into the markets. There are approximately 20 producers of thermally modified timber (TMT) with an overall annual capacity of 60,000–65,000 m3. The current annual market for TMT is estimated to be approximately €35–40 million. In contrast to the European mainstream end uses of TMT, there is also a market for massive and glued thermally modified logs in Russia.  相似文献

Liquefied wood is a naturally based product which has the potential to be used as an adhesive. The bonding of wood with liquefied wood requires a high enough temperature to cure the liquid polymers and achieve bond strength. Dielectric analysis, rheometry and differential scanning calorimetry were used to analyse the curing process of low solvent liquefied wood. For the liquefaction, ethylene glycol was used as a solvent and sulphuric acid was used as a catalyst. The dielectric analysis was used for in situ measurements of the curing of liquefied wood during the bonding of wood. It was found that curing started after a temperature of 100 °C had been reached in the bond. This is correlated with the water evaporation and the diffusion of water and ethylene glycol from the liquefied wood into the wood substrate. Rheological measurements proved the influence of the substrate on the curing of the liquefied wood during bonding. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the curing of liquefied wood occurs in two parts: first, the initial elimination of water and ethylene glycol from the liquefied wood, and then the chemical reaction of the liquefied wood at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Ultrasonic shear waves were propagated through the breadth direction of a wood beam which was subjected to a bending load such that it was in a plane-stress state. The oscillation direction of the shear waves with respect to the wood beam axis was varied by rotating an ultrasonic sensor, and the relationship between the shear wave velocity and the oscillation direction was examined. The results indicate that when the oscillation direction of the shear wave corresponds to the tangential direction of the wood beam, the shear wave velocity decreases sharply and the relationship between shear wave velocity and rotation angle tends to become discontinuous. When the oscillation of the shear waves occurs in the anisotropic direction of the wood beam instead of in the direction of principal stress, the shear wave velocity exhibits a peak value. In addition, the polarization direction was found to correspond to the direction of anisotropy of the wood beam according to the theory of acoustoelastic birefringence with respect to plane stress. This indicates that when the acoustoelastic birefringence method is applied to stress measurement of wood, it is appropriate to align the oscillation direction of the shear wave with the principal axial direction of anisotropy in order to carry out ultrasonic measurement.  相似文献
