Purpose

Soil water is a critical variable for hydrological and biological processes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Information on regional spatial pattern of soil water storage (SWS) and its relationship with environmental factors is important for optimal water management and vegetation restoration in China’s Loess Plateau (CLP) region. State-space approach and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to analyze spatial variability of SWS in the CLP region.

Materials and methods

SWS in the 0–1, 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, and 4–5 m soil layers was measured during the period from June 2013 to September 2015 at 86 locations along a 860 km long south–north transect of CLP.

Results and discussion

The analysis showed that SWS in the 5 m soil profile generally decreased with increasing latitude, driven by decreasing precipitation and soil–water holding capacity. Using various combinations of variables, the state-space model gave a better spatial pattern of SWS than the ANN approach. The best state-space approach, which included clay content, mean annual precipitation, and slope gradient, explained 96.0% of the total variation in SWS. Then, the best ANN approach explained only 76.2% of the variation. Clay content, mean annual precipitation, and slope gradient was the most effective combination for large-scale estimation of SWS under the state-space approach.

Conclusions

The state-space model was recommended as an effective method for analyzing large-scale spatial patterns of soil water using soil, climatic, and topographic properties in the CLP region.

Purpose

Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) is an important native tree species in China. Consecutive cropping traditionally occurs in Chinese fir plantations (CFPs), but this practice has resulted in productivity declines in subsequent rotations. This study was designed to better understand the change of soil properties in the continuous cropping CFPs.

Materials and methods

We investigated soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), and nutrient contents in different soil layers and in rhizosphere soil (RS) and non-rhizosphere soil (NRS) under CFPs of different ages and in different rotations.

Results and discussion

In the upper (0–20 cm) soil layer, soil pH decreased, while SOM increased, beneath mature CFPs with consecutive rotations. Total nitrogen (TN), available potassium, and available phosphorus contents in the upper soil layers did not differ significantly with consecutive rotations. Soil pH in RS was significantly lower than in NRS under mature plantations of the third rotation. Soil organic matter, TN, and available nitrogen did not differ between RS and NRS. Available phosphorus in RS was consistently lower than in NRS, and was highly deficient in the third rotation.

Conclusions

We conclude that no severe soil nutrient degradation occurred in the continuous cropping CFPs examined in this study, with soil acidification and phosphorus deficiency being two primary problems observed.

Purpose

Sampling and analysis of greenhouse soils were conducted in Shouguang, China, to study continuous excessive fertilization effect on nitrifying microbial community dynamics in greenhouse environment.

Materials and methods

Potential nitrification activity (PNA), abundance, and structure of nitrifying microbial communities as well as the correlations with soil properties were investigated.

Results and discussion

Short-term excessive fertilization increased soil nutrient contents and the diversity of nitrifying microbial communities under greenhouse cultivation. However, the abundance and diversity of nitrifying communities decreased greatly due to the increase of soil acidity and salinity after 14 years of high fertilization in greenhouse. There was a significant positive correlation between soil PNA and the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but not that of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in topsoil (0–20 cm) when pH ≥7. Soil PNA and AOB were strongly influenced by soil pH. The groups of Nitrososphaeraceae, Nitrosomonadaceae, and Nitrospiraceae were predominant in the AOA, AOB, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) communities, respectively. Nitrifying community structure was significantly correlated with soil electrical salinity (EC), organic carbon (OC), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?–N) content by redundancy analysis (RDA).

Conclusions

Nitrification was predominated by AOB in greenhouse topsoil with high fertilizer loads. Soil salinity, OC, NO3 ?–N content, and pH affected by continuous excessive fertilization were the major edaphic factors in shaping nitrifying community structure in greenhouse soils.

Purpose

Rice paddy soils undergo pedogenesis driven by periodic flooding and drainage cycles that lead to accumulation of organic matter and the stratification of nutrients and oxygen in the soil profile. Here, we examined the effects of continuous rice cultivation on microbial community structures, enzyme activities, and chemical properties for paddy soils along a chronosequence representing 0–700 years of rice cropping in China.

Materials and methods

Changes in the abundance and composition of bacterial and fungal communities were characterized at three depths (0–5, 5–10, and 10–20 cm) in relation to organic carbon, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon/nitrogen, and activities of acid phosphatase, invertase, and urease.

Results and discussion

Both soil organic carbon and total nitrogen increased over time at all three depths, while pH generally decreased. Microbial abundance (bacteria and fungi) and invertase and urease activity significantly increased with the duration of rice cultivation, especially in the surface layer. Fungal abundance and acid phosphatase activity declined with depth, whereas bacterial abundance was highest at the 5–10-cm soil depth. Profiles of the microbial community based on PCR-DGGE of 16S rRNA indicated that the composition of fungal communities was strongly influenced by soil depth, whereas soil bacterial community structures were similar throughout the profile.

Conclusions

Soil bioactivity (microbial abundance and soil enzymes) gradually increased with organic carbon and total nitrogen accumulation under prolonged rice cultivation. Microbial activity decreased with depth, and soil microbial communities were stratified with soil depth. The fungal community was more sensitive than the bacterial community to cultivation age and soil depth. However, the mechanism of fungal community succession with rice cultivation needs further research.

Purpose

Both overharvesting and climate changes have greatly altered forest composition in northeastern China; however, forest-specific effects on soil organic carbon (SOC), N, and compositional features in different soil fractions have not yet been defined.

Materials and methods

By sampling from broad-leaved Korean pine forest (the climax vegetation) and aspen–birch forest (the secondary forest), five soil fractions were separated by a physicochemical soil fractionation method, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry were used for functional groups, mineral diffraction, and elemental composition determination together with SOC and N measurements.

Results and discussion

Aspen–birch forests tended to sequestrate more SOC in the slow fractions (sand and aggregate [SA] and easily oxidized fractions) and more N in the sensitive fractions (particulate and soluble fractions), indicating that in aspen–birch forests, high SOC sequestration (1.26-fold) coincided with the active and rapid N supply. Much higher percentages (13.1–40.5 %) of O–H and N–H stretching, O–H bending, and C=O, COO–, and C–H stretching, and also the much lower quartz grain size and mineral diffraction peaks in SA and acid-insoluble fraction (over 85 % of total soil mass), in aspen–birch forests were possibly associated with the 1.17- to 1.53-fold higher SOC compared to broad-leaved Korean pine forest. However, elemental composition on soil particles might marginally contribute to the SOC and N forest-dependent differences.

Conclusions

Considering the increase of aspen–birch forests and the decrease of broad-leaved Korean pine forests in historical and future scenarios in northeastern China, more SOC has been and also will sequestrate in intact soils and stable soil fractions, with more N in sensitive fractions, and these should be highlighted in evaluating forest C and N dynamics during forest successions in this region.

Purpose

Grassland exclosure is a widely-used option to prevent from grazing in degraded grasslands for restoration. However, the influence of exclosure on soil macropore of grassland remain scarce. The objective of this study was to quantify the pore architecture of grassland soils under exclosure.

Materials and methods

Two treatments, 9E (grassland enclosed for 9 years) and 5E (grassland enclosed for 5 years), were designed, with grazing as a control in the experiment. Nine soil columns (0–50 cm deep) were taken at the three sites with three replicates. At each site, three soil columns were from the grassland, and cores were scanned with a Philips Brilliance ICT Medical Scanner. Numbers of macropores, macroporosity, network density, length density, and node density within the 50-cm soil profile were interpreted from X-ray computed tomography to analyze soil pore architecture.

Results and discussion

The results indicated that exclosure significantly influenced CT-measured soil macroporosity in the Inner Mongolia grassland of northern China. Soils under enclosed grassland had greater macroporosity, length density, total volume, and node density than that of under freely grazed grassland. Macroporosity increased as the enclosure age increased. For soils under enclosed grassland, macropores were concentrated at 0–300-mm soil layers, and macropores were mainly present at 0–100-mm soil depth under freely grazed grassland. The large number of macropores found in soil under enclosed grassland can be attributed to greater root development.

Conclusions

Exclosure increases soil macroporosity and improve soil structure.

Purpose

Quarrying activities in areas with serpentinized rocks may have a negative impact on plant growth. Quarry soils generally offer hostile environments for plant growth due to their low-nutrient availability, low organic matter, and high-trace metal content.

Materials and methods

In order to determine the factors that can limit plant revegetation, this study was carried out in two serpentine quarries in Galicia (NW Spain): one abandoned in 1999 and the other still active.

Results and discussion

The results show that in soils developed in the abandoned quarry, the limitations for revegetation were: moderate alkaline pH (7.87–8.05), strong Ca/Mg (<1) imbalance, low N (<0.42 mg kg?1) and P (<2 mg kg?1) content, and high total heavy-metal content (Co 76–147 mg kg?1; Cr 1370–2600 mg kg?1; and Ni 1340–2040 mg kg?1). The limitations were much less intense in the soils developed in the substratum in the active quarry, which were incipient soils poorly developed and permanently affected by the quarrying activity.

Conclusions

Restoration work should be geared toward establishing a stable diverse vegetation cover, including serpentinophile species, which would provide the necessary modifications to correct nutritive imbalances and improve soil quality.

Purpose

The objectives of the study were (1) to quantify the long-term effects of nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizer (NP) and a combination of nitrogen-phosphorus with organic manure (NPM) on total soil organic carbon (SOC) and total soil inorganic carbon (SIC), (2) to identify the changes of SOC and SIC in soil particle-size fractions, and (3) to investigate the relationship between SOC and SIC.

Materials and methods

Two long-term field experiments (sites A and B) were performed in 1984 (site A) and 1979 (site B) in the North China Plain. The soil samples were collected in 2006 and separated for clay, silt and sand size particle fractions and then determined for SOC and SIC.

Results and discussion

The long-term fertilization significantly increased SOC in 0–20 cm soil layer by 9–68% but significantly decreased or had no effect on SIC. In total, soil carbon storage was little affected by NP, but significantly increased by NPM application (p < 0.05). Fertilization affected both SOC and SIC in sand- and silt-sized particles but not in clay-size fraction. Both NP and NPM increased SOC in sand- and silt-sized particles by 8.7–123.9% in the 0–20 cm layer but decreased SIC up to 80.4% in the 40–60 cm layer. The SOC concentration in the particle-size fractions was negatively correlated with SIC concentration, which may imply an antagonistic interaction between organic and inorganic carbon levels.

Conclusions

These results illustrate the importance of soil inorganic carbon pool in evaluating soil total carbon pool in semi-arid farmlands. Previous assessments of the effects of fertilizers on the soil carbon pool, using only SOC determinations, require re-evaluation with the inclusion of SIC determinations.

Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of phosphine in the mobilization of phosphorus in the rhizosphere soil of rice seedlings and to determine the relative efficiency of phosphine in plant P acquisition.

Materials and methods

An indoor simulation experiment was conducted and the matrix-bound phosphine (MBP), phosphorus fractions, and phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere soil samples from rice cultivation, biomass, the plant P, and the root system activity were measured under different phosphine concentrations (0, 1.4, 4.2, and 7.0 mg m?3) for a period of 30 days.

Results and discussion

The results indicated that phosphine treatments enhanced MBP, inorganic P (resin–Pi, NaHCO3–Pi, and NaOH–Pi), and phosphatase activity, as well as the root system activity, and the content of P in the rice seedlings was stimulated with increasing phosphine concentrations. However, organic P (NaHCO3–Po and NaOH–Po) accumulation occurred in the rhizosphere of the rice seedlings. In addition, the content of organic P in the soil samples decreased with increased phosphine concentration.

Conclusions

Therefore, relatively high concentrations of phosphine in paddy field could have a positive impact on the effectiveness of phosphorus in rice plants via influencing the rhizosphere properties.

Purpose

Soil water overconsumption is threatening the sustainability of regional vegetation rehabilitation in the Loess Plateau of China. In this study, two typical natural and artificial grasslands under different precipitation regimes were selected and the spatial variations in and the factors that impact the soil water content were investigated to provide support for vegetation restoration and sustainability management in the Loess Plateau.

Materials and methods

Soil samples were collected in May and September. Medicago sativa L. and Stipa bungeana Trin. were selected as representatives of natural and artificial grasslands, respectively. Soil measurements were conducted at the beginning and end of the rainy seasons at soil depths of 0 to 3 m in 0.2-m increments, and 147 undisturbed and 2205 disturbed soil samples were collected at 27 sampling sites with different precipitation gradients across the Loess Plateau. The plant height, the field capacity, the saturated hydraulic conductivity, the bulk density, and the slope gradient were considered as impact factors. Statistic methods included one-way ANOVA, correlation tests, significance tests, and redundancy analyses.

Results and discussion

Spatial variation trends indicated that the mean soil water content increased as the multi-year mean precipitation increased, and the soil water content was higher in the natural grassland of Stipa bungeana Trin. than in the artificial grassland of Medicago sativa L. in the same precipitation gradient zone. Vertical spatial variation trends indicated that the soil water content was higher in most surface layers than in the deep layer and lower at the end of the rainy season than at the beginning of the rainy season, when the mean annual precipitation was less than 510 mm. The soil water content of the Stipa bungeana Trin. grassland was significantly correlated with precipitation and plant height, whereas the soil water content of the Medicago sativa L. grassland only exhibited a significant correlation with precipitation. Thus, grasses with fine palatability, good adaptability, and low water consumption should be cultivated in the Loess Plateau.

Conclusions

The decreased soil water content is more obvious in the soil layers with active vegetation roots. In the areas with multi-year precipitation at 370–440 mm, natural grasslands are more suitable for restoration and these areas should be treated as key areas for vegetation restoration. With regard to the spatial distribution of vegetation restoration, the economic and ecological benefits must be balanced so that the ratio of artificial vegetation and natural restoration can be optimized to realize the continued sustainability of vegetation restorations.

Purpose

With its high economic benefits, navel orange (Citrus sinensis) has been widely planted and fertilizer has been increasingly applied in the subtropical China in the last 30 years. Comprehensive assessments are needed to explore the long-term fertilization impacts on soil chemical and biological properties in the navel orange orchards.

Materials and methods

Through a large number of soil and leaf samples from the young, middle-aged, and mature navel orange orchards, this study examined the impacts of stand age (corresponding to the fertilization year using compound chemical fertilizer) on seasonal variations in major soil properties and leaf nutrients in the subtropical China.

Results and discussion

Soil total nitrogen (N) and mineral N were significantly higher in the middle-aged and mature orchards than in the young orchard. Total phosphorus (P), available P, labile P, slow P, occluded P, weathered mineral P, total exactable P, and residual P generally increased with fertilization years (P?<?0.05), and the increasing percentages for soil P fractions were much higher than those for N variables. The total N and P use efficiencies (plant uptake/soil input) were 20–34 and 10–15 %, respectively. Soil microbial biomass, invertase, urease, and acid phosphatase activities showed significant seasonal variations and decreased with fertilization years. Leaf N concentration significantly decreased with fertilization years, but no difference was found for P.

Conclusions

Soil self-fertilization was impeded, and less fertilizer amount should be applied especially in the older navel orange orchards since N and P accumulations do not increase leaf nutrients but worsen soil biological quality.

Purpose

Changes in bioactive soil C pools and their temperature sensitivities will dominate the fate of soil organic C in a warmer future, which is not well understood in highland ecosystems. This study was conducted in order to evaluate climate change, especially cooling effects, on soil labile organic C (LOC) pools in a Tibetan alpine meadow.

Materials and methods

A short-term reciprocal translocation experiment was implemented to stimulate climate warming (downward translocation) and cooling (upward translocation) using an elevation gradient on the Tibetan Plateau. Variations in soil microbial biomass C (MBC), dissolved organic C (DOC) and LOC were analyzed.

Results and discussion

Over the range of soil temperature from 0.02 to 5.5 °C, warming averagely increased soil MBC, DOC and LOC by 15.3, 17.0 and 3.7 % while cooling decreased them by 11.0, 11.9 and 3.2 %, respectively. Moreover, warming generally increased the proportion of DOC in LOC but cooling had an opposite effect, while the response of the MBC proportion to DOC and LOC varied depending on vegetation type. Soil MBC, DOC and LOC pools were positively related to soil temperature and showed a hump-shaped relationship with soil moisture with a threshold of about 30–35 %. Although soil DOC was more sensitive to warming (5.1 % °C?1) than to cooling (3.0 % °C?1), soil LOC showed a symmetrical response due to regulation by soil moisture.

Conclusions

Our results indicated that climate change would not only change the size of soil LOC pools but also their quality. Therefore, cooling effects and regulation of soil moisture should be considered to evaluate the fate of soil organic C in Tibetan alpine meadows in a warmer future.

Purpose

Soil properties are highly heterogeneous in forest ecosystems, which poses difficulties in estimating soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools. However, little is known about the relative contributions of environmental factors and vegetation to spatial variations in soil C and N, especially in highly diverse mixed forests. Here, we examined the spatial variations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in a subtropical mixed forest in central China, and then quantified the main drivers.

Materials and methods

Soil samples (n = 972) were collected from a 25-ha forest dynamic plot in Badagonshan Nature Reserve, central China. All trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥1 cm and topography data in the plot were surveyed in detail. Geostatistical analyses were used to characterize the spatial variability of SOC and TN, while variation partitioning combined with Mantel’s test were used to quantify the relative contribution of each type of factors.

Results and discussion

Both surface soil (0–10 cm) and subsurface soil (10–30 cm) exhibited moderate spatial autocorrelation with explainable fractions ranged from 31 to 47 %. The highest contribution to SOC and TN variation came from soil variables (including soil pH and available phosphorus), followed by vegetation and topographic variables. Although the effect of topography was weak, Mantel’s test still showed a significant relationship between topography and SOC. Strong interactions among these variables were discovered. Compared with surface soil, the explanatory power of environmental variables was much lower for subsurface soil.

Conclusions

The differences in relative contributions between surface and subsurface soils suggest that the dominating ecological process are likely different in the two soil depths. The large unexplained variation emphasized the importance of fine-scale variations and ecological processes. The large variations in soil C and N and their controlling mechanisms should be taken into account when evaluating how forest managements may affect C and N cycles.

Purpose

Many efforts of restoring vegetation have ignored the feedbacks between biotic and abiotic factors that have developed in water-limited ecosystem. Dried soil layers (DSLs) have formed extensively on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). The objective of this study was to identify the primary factors controlling spatial pattern of DSLs on the CLP.

Materials and methods

Two DSL indices (DSL thickness (DSLT) and soil water content in a DSL (DSL-SWC)) were estimated by measuring SWC to a depth of 5 m at 86 sites along a south-north transect on the CLP in 2013. The correlation between the spatial pattern of DSLs and environmental factors was determined with redundancy analysis (RDA).

Results and discussion

DSLs had formed at most of the sites (66 of the 86 sites) along the transect. The sites without DSLs were primarily in an irrigated agricultural zone. DSLT was >400 cm and generally increased from south to north, and DSL-SWC was 2.54% (v/v) in the semi-arid zone of the transect. The connected features of DSLs between connected neighboring sampling units exhibited a much wider extent. A total of nine environmental variables were the primary contributors to the spatial pattern of the DSLs, explaining approximately 47.3% of the variability. Local conditions were responsible for the higher proportion of explained variability than climatic factors. In addition, field capacity was the most important factor in all environmental factors, which may have influenced water-holding capacity.

Conclusions

This study concludes that spatial continuity and local conditions determine the spatial pattern of DSLs at a regional scale. Understanding the characteristic of DSLs is useful for efficiency of vegetation restoration and soil water management.

Purpose

Nanoparticles (NPs) have received increased attention in recent past due to their unique distinct properties. Metal-based NPs are widely used in chemical and allied sector. Most of the research is directed to study the efficiency of NPs in medicine and agriculture. The aim of this review is to explore the possible threats posed by toxicity of various NPs on plants and microbial diversity.

Materials and methods

First, major sources of NPs to the environment were analyzed. The effects of metal-based NPs on the microbiota and plants are presented in this review. The results obtained by the authors during last 12 years of research are used.

Results and discussion

The exposure of soil to nanoparticles causes a decrease in soil microbial biomass and enzymatic activity, which impacts microbial community composition including yeasts, bacteria, fungi, and biological diversity. The effects of NPs on plants result in various types of abnormalities. Nanoparticles can also pose risks to human health.

Conclusions

Increased applications of NPs pose a threat to beneficial microbial communities as well as crops and soils. Thus, it is important to explore whether NPs could compromise crop yield, soil properties, soil organisms, and functional activities of soil.

Purpose

The objective of this review is to survey critically the results obtained by the application of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to the evaluation of the humification degree (HD) of soil organic matter (SOM) directly in untreated, intact whole soils.

Materials and methods

A large number of soils of various origin and nature, either native or under various cultivations, land use, and management, at various depths, have been studied to evaluate the HD of their SOM directly in intact whole samples. The LIFS spectra were obtained by either a bench or a portable argon laser apparatus that emits UV-VIS light of high power, whereas the LIBS spectra were obtained using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm.

Results and discussion

The close correlations found by comparing HLIF values of whole soil samples with values of earlier proposed humification indexes confirmed the applicability of LIFS to assess the HD of SOM in whole soils. The high correlation found between HDLIBS values and HLIF values showed the promising potential of LIBS for the evaluation HD of SOM.

Conclusions

The LIFS technique shows to be a valuable alternative to evaluate the HD of SOM by probing directly the whole solid soil sample, thus avoiding the use of any previous chemical and/or physical treatments or separation procedures of SOM from the mineral soil matrix. The emerging application of LIBS to evaluate the HD of SOM in whole soils appears promising and appealing due to its sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision.

Purpose

The objectives of this study were to investigate (i) how the changes in cultivation pattern of vegetable affect soil microbial communities and (ii) the relationships between soil physico-chemical properties and microbial community structure.

Materials and methods

Soil samples were collected from fields growing vegetable crops with various times of plastic-greenhouse cultivation (0, 1, 4, 7 and 15 years, respectively). Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis was conducted to reveal the soil microbial community of the test soils.

Results and discussion

The open-field soil had the highest total PLFAs amount. Although the Shannon-Weaver index was also highest in the open-field soil, the difference was not significant. Plastic-greenhouse cultivation decreased PLFAs species diversity and richness. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) of the PLFA profiles revealed distinct groupings at different times during plastic-greenhouse cultivation.

Conclusions

Ultimately, PLFA analyses showed that long-term plastic-greenhouse cultivation make the physiological status of soil microbial community worse and increased stress level of microorganisms. And soil microbial community was significantly affected by field water capacity and water-soluble organic carbon. The study highlights the potential risk of long-term plastic-greenhouse cultivation to soil microbial community.

Purpose

The validity of soil erosion data is often questioned because of the variation between replicates. This paper aims to evaluate the relevance of interreplicate variability to soil and soil organic carbon (SOC) erosion over prolonged rainfall.

Materials and methods

Two silty loams were subjected to simulated rainfall of 30 mm h?1 for 360 min. The entire rainfall event was repeated ten times to enable statistical analysis of the variability of the runoff and soil erosion rates.

Results and discussion

The results show that, as selective removal of depositional particles and crust formation progressively stabilized the soil surface, the interreplicate variability of runoff and soil erosion rates declined considerably over rainfall time. Yet, even after the maximum runoff and erosion rates were reached, the interreplicate variability still remained between 15 and 39 %, indicating the existence of significant inherent variability in soil erosion experiments.

Conclusions

Great caution must be paid when applying soil and SOC erosion data after averaging from a small number of replicates. While not readily applicable to other soil types or rainfall conditions, the great interreplicate variability observed in this study suggests that a large number of replicates is highly recommended to ensure the validity of average values, especially when extrapolating them to assess soil and SOC erosion risk in the field.

Purpose

Sulfonamides are widely used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections, hard-degraded contaminants distributed in the environment if they are discharged into the soil and water. Biochar could probably influence the geochemical behavior of ionized antibiotics in the soils.

Materials and methods

To determine the sorption/desorption of three representative sulfonamides (SAs) in soils amended with biochar, we investigated the effects of water pH, Cu2+, and dissolved humic acid on the sorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfamethazine (SMZ), and sulfadiazine (SD) onto two different soil samples (S1 pH?=?5.13 and S2 pH?=?7.33) amended with wheat straw-derived biochar (size 0.5~0.6 mm).

Results and discussion

Batch experiments showed that the sorption/desorption isotherms of SAs on soil with/without biochar followed the Freundlich model. The biochar had a strong adsorption potential for SMX, SMZ, and SD both in S1 and S2 at low water pH. Except for SMX, the presence of Cu2+ inhibited the sorption of SMZ and SD through competing hydrophobic adsorption region in soils. HA suppressed the sorption of three sulfonamides in soil S2 by electrostatic repulsion under alkaline condition. The soil leaching column experiments showed the SA transport in soils, and S1 and S2 amended with biochar (0.5 and 1.0 wt%) brought about 12–20 % increase in SMX, SMZ, and SD retention compared to the untreated soil.

Conclusions

The results indicated that the presence of biochar effectively mitigated the mobility of ionized antibiotics such as SMX, SMZ, and SD in soils, which helps us reconsider the potential risk of antibiotics in the environment.
