A healthy 6.5-year-old sexually intact female Belgian Tervuren was found to be persistently leukopenic during preoperative evaluation for routine ovariohysterectomy. Abnormalities of the erythroid or myeloid series were not detected during bone marrow analysis. Blood samples for CBC were collected from 8 additional healthy Belgian Tervuren of both sexes and of various ages. Six of the 9 dogs were leukopenic, with WBC counts between 2.38 and 5.42 x 10(3) WBC/microl (mean +/- SD, 4.13 +/- 1.04 x 10(3) WBC/microl). Leukopenia was a persistent finding in the 3 dogs from which multiple blood samples were collected. All dogs were otherwise clinically normal. Leukopenia, as defined by a WBC count < 6.00 x 10(3) WBC/microl, may be a common finding in the Belgian Tervuren breed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Physiologic leukopenia in Tervuren dogs was reported in North America with a higher frequency in aged Tervurens. If not recognized, physiologic leukopenia can provoke unnecessary clinical investigations. HYPOTHESIS: The primary objective was to compare Tervurens and control dogs in Belgium with respect to the numbers of dogs with physiologic leukopenia. The secondary objectives were to compare Tervurens with control dogs and age classes within Tervurens and controls for parameters related to physiologic leukopenia. ANIMALS: Tervurens (n = 94) and control dogs (n = 48, maximum of 5 dogs per breed and 5 mixed breed dogs) were entered into the study. Dogs were 1-11 years old and healthy on routine physical examination. Dogs had no history of disease or drug administration in the previous 2 months. METHODS: Hematologic analyses were performed by an automated device within 30 hours of sampling. Blood smears were evaluated for cellular morphologic anomalies. RESULTS: Only 1 of the 94 Tervuren dogs had physiologic leukopenia (1.06%; 95% confidence interval, 0.05-5.22). Furthermore, the white blood cell (WBC) count in Tervuren dogs (median, 10.00 x 109/L; range, 5.90-20.80) was not significantly different (P = .55) from that of control dogs (median, 9.75 x 109/L; range, 5.20-20.90). The WBC count decreased significantly (P < .001) with age in Tervuren dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Physiologic leukopenia is uncommon in the Belgian Tervuren dog. Differences with earlier data published in North America might be due to genetic or environmental differences.  相似文献

There is growing evidence that idiopathic epilepsy in the Belgian Tervuren has a genetic foundation. Reducing the incidence of this disorder, which may afflict as much as 17% of the breed, will rely upon the wise selection of parents. Seizure data on 997 dogs from the American Belgian Tervuren Club were collected through questionnaires in which animals were classified into one of four mutually exclusive categories: 1) no seizures observed, 2) one seizure observed, 3) two to five seizures, and 4) more than five seizures. The analysis of this ordered data made use of a threshold model of Bayesian inference. Integration of posterior densities was accomplished through Gibbs sampling. Through this analysis we are able to predict that the offspring of the mating of two non-epileptic dogs has a probability of 0.99 of never suffering from a seizure. The offspring of the mating of two dogs who have each had 1 seizure has a predicted probability 0.58 of never suffering from a seizure. Prevention of this disease is best prescribed through the selection of non-epileptic dogs as parents of future generations.  相似文献

A 10-month-old American cocker spaniel was evaluated for megaesophagus, aspiration pneumonia, but no appendicular muscle weakness. During hospitalization, weakness of the facial muscles developed, this resolved with anticholinesterase administration. Serum antibodies against acetylcholine receptors were documented, confirming the diagnosis of focal myasthenia gravis. Diagnosis, management, and medical treatment are discussed.  相似文献

Seven cases of gastric carcinoma in Belgian shepherd dogs were histologically diagnosed at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Milan, in addition to the eight cases reported in 1989. In all 15 cases the lesser curvature was invaded by the tumour. Histologically, six neoplasms were signet ring cell carcinoma, five were undifferentiated carcinoma, two were mucinous adenocarcinoma and one was a tubular adenocarcinoma; one case showed different histological features (tubular and papillar adenocarcinoma, signet ring cell and undifferentiated carcinoma) none of which prevailed. The Grimelius stain showed the presence of few ente-rochromaffin cells scattered in the tumoral tissue in four cases. The examination of the pedigree of eight Belgian shepherd dogs with gastric carcinoma demonstrates that all these animals were related, suggesting a genetic mechanism in the pathogenesis of the disease.  相似文献

Objectives : To establish the mode of inheritance and describe the clinical features of epilepsy in the Belgian shepherd, taking the outset in an extended Danish dog family (199 individuals) of Groenendael and Tervueren with accumulated epilepsy. Methods : Epilepsy positive individuals (living and deceased) were ascertained through a telephone interview using a standardised questionnaire regarding seizure history and phenomenology. Living dogs were invited to a detailed clinical evaluation. Litters more than five years of age, or where epilepsy was present in all offspring before the age of five, were included in the calculations of inheritance. Results : Out of 199 family members, 66 dogs suffered from epilepsy. The prevalence of epilepsy in the family was 33%. Fifty‐five dogs experienced focal seizures with or without secondary generalisation, while four dogs experienced primary generalised seizures. In seven dogs, seizures could not be classified. The mode of inheritance of epilepsy was simple Mendelian. Clinical Significance : This study identified that the Belgian shepherd suffers from genetically transmitted focal epilepsy. The seizure phenomenology expressed by family members have a strong resemblance to what has been reported for familial partial (focal) epilepsy in humans with variable foci with suggestion of linkage to chromosome 2 and chromosome 22q12.  相似文献

A 6-year-old female dog had a 3-day history of postprandial vomiting of undigested food. Plain and contrast radiography revealed a large mass on the greater curvature of the stomach. On exploratory gastrotomy, the mass was found to consist of hypertrophic rugae resembling cerebral gyri and sulci. The histopathologic findings were similar to those for hypertrophic gastropathy in man and the dog.  相似文献

The combined occurrence of ocular pigment deposition and glaucoma has been described in Cairn Terriers. Recently, this condition was also observed in two other breeds: the Boxer (two cases) and the Labrador Retriever (one case). Six dogs were referred to the Ophthalmology section of the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals and to a private referral clinic because of glaucoma or blindness in one or both eyes. In five cases ophthalmic examination showed pigment depositions in the sclera around the entire circumference of the perilimbal zone. Eight enucleated eyes (four eyes of two Cairn Terriers, three eyes of two Boxers and one eye of a Labrador Retriever) were examined microscopically. All eyes showed the same findings: an extensive infiltration of large melanin-containing cells with an eccentric nucleus, located in the iris, ciliary body, retina, choroids and sclera. Transmission electron microscopy of two of the examined eyes revealed that the morphology of most of these cells was consistent with melanophages. While reports in the veterinary literature concerning this condition are limited the cells concerned have been described to be melanocytes. Further research is needed to conclusively identify the cell type. As described in the present report, the histologic and transmission electron microscopic findings suggest a different etiology of the ocular pigment deposition and glaucoma compared with the pigment dispersal syndrome in humans.  相似文献

Occurrence and type (resorption, abortion, stillbirth, mummification) of pregnancy loss in the dog and cat depend on the cause of the loss and the stage of gestation at which it occurs. General categories of known causes of embryonic or fetal death in the dog and cat include chromosome and developmental abnormalities of the fetus, infectious agents, maternal endocrine abnormalities, trauma, exogenous drugs, uterine torsion, and dystocia. Diagnosis of fetal loss and of cause of fetal loss relies on the history, physical examination, abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, serology, hormone assay, and on culture, pathology, and karyotype of fetal/placental tissue. Aggressive diagnostics at the time of fetal loss are essential to preventive strategies at subsequent pregnancies.  相似文献
