Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. Fr., is a major disease in roses. The effect of spraying rose (Cultivar ‘Kiss’) buds with calcium sulfate on the intensity of gray mold was evaluated. Calcium sulfate was sprayed on the buds at different schedules and concentrations before harvest. Thereafter, the buds were harvested and either inoculated or not with B. cinerea. The treatments reduced both the progress and severity of gray mold and increased vase life of the flowers. Good results were achieved with 10 and 20 mM calcium sulfate, applied 24 h before harvest. In the uninoculated assay, the maximum percentages of reduction of the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and of severity were 86% and 86%, respectively, and in the inoculated assay, 68% and 76%, respectively. Vase life of the flowers was increased at least 30% in the assay without inoculation and 20% in the assay with inoculation. Spraying roses with calcium sulfate at 10 mM or 20 mM one day before harvest is recommended to control gray mold after harvest.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and bark injuries on the occurrence of crown rot of peach trees caused by P. cactorum and P. citrophthora were examined in field and laboratory. Lesions developed at 35 °C (the complete range of temperatures tested) but maximum development occurred at 20–25 °C. Greatest growth of these fungi on cornmeal agar (CMA) also occurred between 15 and 30 °C. Both pathogens could infect injured trees up to 20 days after wounding, but could not infect uninjured plants or plants wounded 40 and 30 days before inoculation, respectively. This study showed that temperature is a critical factor for the development of Phytophthora crown rot of peach trees. In addition, crown rot developed from recent wounds inoculated with agar plugs of Phytophthora.  相似文献

Two separate trials during 2010 and 2011 were conducted using field grown white flowering horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) to asssess the insecticidal efficacy of three systemic inducing agents (SIR), namely (Messanger (active substance (a.s.) Harpin protein), Phoenix (a.s. Potassium phosphite) and Rigel (a.s. Salicylic acid derivative) applied to coincide with the appearance of each adult generation of the insect pest, horse chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic; HCLM). A conventional synthetic insecticide (deltamethrin) used within the UK for HCLM control was included for comparison. A marked impact of SIR inducing agent and frequency of application on HCLM severity was recorded. The effectiveness of each SIR inducing agent on mean number of HCLM mines per leaf and percent HCLM larvae/pupae mortality increased when applied at increasing frequencies i.e. three sprays provided greater control than two sprays while two sprays provided greater control than one spray. The synthetic insecticide deltamethrin provided the greatest degree of HCLM control with two foliar sprays providing 100% HCLM control. Efficacy of SIR inducing agents based on reduction of HCLM mines per leaf after three sprays averaged across both the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons was in the order potassium phosphite > salicylic acid derivative > harpin protein > water control where leaf mining activity was reduced by 35–64%. Enhancement of leaf phenolic content was indicated as a means by which SIR agents reduced leaf mining activity. Results show commercially available SIR inducing agents exist that provide potentially acceptable degrees of HCLM control provided at least two sprays are applied during a growing season.  相似文献

Two separate trials during 2007 and 2008 were conducted using containerized white flowering horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) to assess the efficacy of a range of insecticides applied at three different times during a growing season against the insect pest, horse chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic; HCLM). Insecticides were timed to coincide with the emergence of the adult moth, the target organism. A conventional synthetic insecticide (deltamethrin) used within the UK for HCLM control was included for comparison. A marked impact of insecticide type and frequency of application on HCLM severity was recorded. The effectiveness of each insecticide on mean number of HCLM mines per leaf and percent HCLM larvae/pupae mortality increased when applied at increasing frequencies, i.e. three sprays provided a higher degree of control than two sprays while two sprays provided a higher degree of control than one spray. Limited efficacy as HCLM protectant compounds was demonstrated when the insecticides pyrethrum and soap were applied, irrespective of number of applications. The synthetic insecticide deltamethrin and insect growth regulator diflubenzuron provided the greatest degree of HCLM control. In some instances two foliar sprays provided 100% HCLM control. Efficacy of remaining insecticides based on reduction of HCLM mines per leaf after three sprays averaged across both the 2007 and 2008 trials was in the order silicon dioxide > alginate/polysaccharide combination > organic plant extract > spray oil. Results show commercially registered insecticides exist that provide growing season control of HCLM provided two sprays are applied.  相似文献

This study was performed to monitor the deterioration of bruised persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. Fuyu) fruits. Freshly harvested fruits were bruised by dropping them from a height of 50 cm onto a steel board and then stored at 0 or 20 °C in temperature controlled chambers for up to 4 weeks. Immediately after the bruising, no visible injury on the fruits was evident, but the fruits deteriorated rapidly during storage. The skin tissues of the fruits stored at 20 °C became more reddish with the duration of the storage, but no such changes were found with the fruits stored at 0 °C. The increase in redness of the skin tissues appeared to be associated with storage temperature, but not with the bruising. The skin tissues also became darker when stored at 20 °C than at 0 °C and this tendency was more obvious with the bruised fruits. Flesh firmness decreased rapidly during storage except for the non-bruised fruits stored at 0 °C. Even the non-bruised fruits rapidly lost their flesh firmness at 20 °C. No significant changes in lipid peroxidation, as expressed by malondialdehyde production, were found between the bruised and the non-bruised fruits during the storage either at 0 °C or at 20 °C. This implies that the fruit deterioration caused by bruising is not due to the consequences of lipid peroxidation. Polyphenol oxidase activity increased more rapidly in the bruised fruits than in the non-bruised fruits during storage. The bruising had more effect on increasing polyphenol oxidase activity than did the storage temperature. Although the increase in polyphenol oxidase activity appeared to be associated with the visual deterioration of the bruised fruits, it did not exactly correspond to the physical deterioration. These results indicate that polyphenol oxidase is not the only factor influencing the deterioration associated with bruising. Cell wall hydrolases are currently being assayed to determine if they also contribute the deterioration following bruising.  相似文献

The effectiveness of two commercial formulations of gibberellin (GA) and benzyladenine (BA) for reducing foliar chlorosis on Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.) was compared. On a per liter basis, plants were sprayed with 0, 100, 200, or 400 mg (BA equivalent) of Accel (GA4+7:BA of 1:10) or Promalin (GA4+7:BA of 1:1) when the crop leaf area index (LAI)=3. One group of plants was sprayed with 100 mg of Accel or Promalin (BA equivalent) per liter twice: once at LAI=3 and again 3 weeks later. Plants were harvested when the largest flower bud on each plant measured 13 cm in length, stored for 0 or 3 weeks at 2.5°C in the dark, and then moved into a post-harvest evaluation room at 21°C, where foliar chlorosis was monitored for 3 weeks. Senescence of some lower leaves on plants in every treatment was evident at harvest, and incidence of senescence increased during the 21 days of post-harvest evaluation. Cold storage increased the number of leaves senescing during the subsequent evaluation period. Application of Promalin or Accel significantly reduced leaf senescence compared to that of untreated plants. At harvest, 21% of the leaves on untreated plants were senescent, while plants treated with Promalin or Accel averaged 3 or 9% senescent leaves, respectively. Following 7 days of post-harvest evaluation, Promalin was more effective in preventing chlorosis than Accel at the 400 mg l−1 (BA equivalent) level. Following 14 or 21 days of post-harvest evaluation, Promalin was more effective than Accel for the 100 mg l−1 2× and 400 mg l−1 (BA equivalent) treatments.Plants in all Promalin and Accel treatments were taller than untreated plants 1 week after sprays were applied. At harvest, plants sprayed with Promalin were between 6 and 14 cm taller than untreated plants, but those treated with Accel were the same height as untreated plants.Neither Promalin nor Accel influenced the occurrence of malformed or aborted flowers in this study. However, cold storage significantly increased the number of plants with aborted buds and malformed flowers. Unstored plants averaged 0.16 aborted buds and 0.02 malformed flowers each, while those stored 3 weeks averaged 0.51 aborted buds and 0.18 malformed flowers each.  相似文献

Fruit ethylene production and flesh firmness were measured in F1 and F2 offsprings from a cross of a non-melting cultivar ‘Nishiki’ and a stony hard cultivar ‘Yumyeong’ of peach (Prunus persicaBatsch). Fruits from genotypes that showed no natural ethylene production were treated with 1000 ppm ethylene and subsequent flesh softening was observed. Genotypes of melting and non-melting in stony hard fruits could be distinguished by the degree of softening following exogenous ethylene treatment. The stony hard trait was inherited independently of the melting flesh/non-melting flesh trait and was epistatic to this trait.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to investigate how harvest maturity influence fruit ripening processes to alleviate chilling injury (CI) in mangoes (cv. Tommy Atkins). Fruit at three stages of maturity, immature (M1), half-mature (M2) and mature (M3) were stored for 18 days at 5 °C and then at 1 or 3 days at 20 °C. M1 fruit succumbed to CI after 18 days at 5 °C, with symptoms increasing in severity upon warming. Low C2H4 production, poor colour development, minor changes to fruit composition, insipid flavour and poor aroma revealed that fruit ripening was insufficient to reduce CI compared to M2 and M3 fruits. M2 and M3 fruits had higher C2H4 production rates than M1 fruit and ripened normally with acceptable flavour and aroma after 18 days at 5 °C and 3 days at 20 °C. While M3 fruit had no CI symptoms, they were overripe and fruit decay incidence was 26.6%, compared to M2 fruit which had no decay, a trace of CI symptoms and possessed the best overall quality.  相似文献

The long period of time required for fruit ripening is a main drawback to the adoption of mishqui (Solanum muricatum) as a new crop. Variation in the fruit ripening period was studied in 18 mishqui clones in response to ethephon sprays (0, 500 or 2000 mg l−1). Significant differences in the length of the fruit ripening period were detected between clones, ethephon doses and their interactions. Some clones did not respond to ethephon sprays, while in others the ripening period was shortened by more than 60%. In general, the effect of ethephon was greater in the clones with a longer ripening period. Furthermore, differences between clones of up to 20 days were found in the fruit growth period. Lengths of both periods (fruit growth and ripening) were not correlated, indicating that independent selection can be performed for both traits. The effects of ethephon on fruit quality characters were not significant in the majority of clones, although in five clones ethephon produced a skin degreening. Fruits from these clones had a higher firmness and lower soluble solid content (SSC) after ethephon treatment. On the other hand, ethephon sprays did not affect either the postharvest behaviour or the sensitivity to bruising. The results obtained here point to the existence of genotypic variation in the fruit ripening physiology of this species and they give relevant information for the improvement of mishqui earliness.

Calcium (Ca) has been considered a key element in maintaining fruit quality and extending the storage period of several fruits. The main blueberry (interspecific hybrids of Vaccinium corymbosum x V. darrowii) market for the Southern Hemisphere production involves a long transport between harvest and consumption. Foliar Ca sprays during the pre-harvest constitutes a common practice for improving Ca concentration [Ca] in fruits and therefore in alleviating the loss of firmness, dehydration and rot decay during postharvest. In this study, two formulations of Ca; Ca-nitrate [Ca(NO3)2] and chelate Ca-oxide (Ca-gluconate; Ca-Glu) were sprayed four times during pre-harvest of blueberry cv. O’Neal. [Ca] in the fruits was followed after each application and fruit quality parameters were determined at harvest and during 28 days of cold storage. Both formulations were ineffective in increasing [Ca] in the berries (or leaves) after any of the four applications. In fruits, [Ca] decreased from 0.32% at 25 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 0.11% Ca at harvest time. Other minerals such as magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), or nitrogen (N) remained unaffected by the treatments. Data shows that foliar pre-harvest applications of Ca, regardless of formula, were ineffective at increasing [Ca] or improving the quality of the fruit.  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that manipulating water out-flow of a plant through the shoot environment (potential transpiration, ET0) in a glasshouse could modulate the effect of salinity/osmotic potential in the root environment upon yield of tomatoes. Contrasting root-zone salinity treatments were combined with two climate treatments — a reference (high transpiration, HET0) and a “depressed” transpiration (low transpiration, LET0). The salinity treatments, characterised by their electrical conductivity (EC) were 6.5, 8 and 9.5 dS m−1, were always coupled with a reference treatment of EC=2 dS m−1. In another experiment, concentrated nutrients (Nutrients) and nutrients with sodium chloride (NaCl) at the same EC of 9 dS m−1 were compared.Marketable fresh-yield production efficiency decreased by 5.1% for each dS m−1 in excess of 2 dS m−1. The number of harvested fruits was not affected; yield loss resulted from reduced fruit weight (3.8% per dS m−1) and an increased fraction of unmarketable harvest. At the LET0 treatments, yield loss was only 3.4% per dS m−1 in accordance with the reduction in fruit weight. Low transpiration did increase fruit fresh yield by 8% in both NaCl and Nutrients treatments at an EC=9 dS m−1. Neither EC nor ET0 affected individual fruit dry weight. Accordingly, fruit dry matter content was significantly higher at high EC than in the reference (4% per each EC unit in excess of 2 dS m−1) and responded to ET0 to a minor extent. Control of the shoot environment in a greenhouse to manipulate the fresh weight of the product may mitigate the effects of poor quality irrigation water without affecting product quality.  相似文献

Changes of mechanical properties, ultrastructure, cell wall components and wall-bound peroxidase in grape skin were studied prior to and after veraison in cv. Golden Muscat (Vitis vinifera × V. labrusca). Skin loosened continuously after veraison. Ultrastructural changes of the loosening skin included wall swelling in the epidermis and subepidermis cells, degradation of the middle lamella in the inner cells, and wall surfaces becoming “wavy”. Apoplast acidification took place in post-veraison berries. Contents of wall structural components, e.g. insoluble pectin, hemicellulose, cellulose and wall-bound calcium in the skin decreased, while both content of SDS-insoluble amino acids (especially hydroxyproline) and the activity of wall-bound peroxidase increased significantly after veraison. The activity of the enzyme was found localized mainly in the walls of the outermost four layers of cells including the epidermis and subepidermis tissues. The results indicated that, during loosening of skin, the cell walls in the skin constantly lose structural polysaccharides and calcium. Meanwhile, structural protein incorporation and phenolic cross-linkage formation became active especially in the walls of epidermis and subepidermis cells.  相似文献

The effect of diurnal maximum/minimum (20/10 or 25/15 °C) temperatures on seed and fruit development of ‘Irwin’, ‘Kensington’ and ‘Nam Dok Mai’ mangoes (Mangifera indica L.) was studied in a controlled-environment glasshouse. Exposure to low temperatures (20/10 °C day/night) 3 days after hand pollination significantly increased the percentage of stenospermocarpic fruit (nubbins), in which embryos were aborted at some stage during early fruit development. There were significant differences between cultivars in the percentage of nubbins produced out of the total fruit set following overnight exposure to 10 °C with 21% for ‘Nam Dok Mai’, 11% for ‘Kensington’ and 3% for ‘Irwin’. At 45 days after pollination, nubbin fruits were much smaller in size and weighed ca. 50% less than normal fruits. The lower percentage of nubbin fruits in ‘Irwin’ implies a greater adaptation to cool temperatures by this cultivar during fruit set and early embryo development.  相似文献

The effect of vitamin riboflavin (B2) on in vitro rooting of the almond × peach hybrid clone GF 667 was studied. Riboflavin was added in five concentrations: 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg l−1. After 4 weeks in culture, riboflavin did not stimulate adventitious rooting of the explants and rooting was very low in comparison to the control treatment. A high percentage of shoots on the rooting media containing the two highest concentrations of Vitamin B2 had shown symptoms of chlorosis and apex necrosis.  相似文献

On the Cornell University campus a long-term study has measured the impacts of a soil remediation strategy on plant growth and soil quality using the Cornell Soil Health Test. The Scoop & Dump (S&D) process of soil remediation consists of physically fracturing compacted urban soils, incorporating large quantities (33% by volume) of compost with the use of a backhoe, and annually top dressing with mulch. This study was designed to investigate the impact of this remediation technique for the amelioration of compaction and degradation of soils in the urbanized environment. The study finds that over a 12-year period remediated soils exhibit improved (reduced) bulk density (R2 = 0.50) (P < .0001) (n = 30), increased active carbon (R2 = 0.61) (P < .0001) (n = 30) and increased potentially mineralizable nitrogen (R2 = 0.61) (P < .0001) (n = 30). When S&D soils were compared to unamended (Unam) soils, improvements were found in aggregate stability (S&D = 72.41%, Unam = 34.90%, P < .0001, n = 30), available water holding capacity (S&D = 0.22%, Unam = 0.15%, P < .0001, n = 30), total organic matter (S&D = 8.43%, Unam = 3.23%, P < .0001, n = 30), potentially mineralizable nitrogen (S&D = 27.53 mg/kg, Unam = 3.11 mg/kg, P = 0.0005, n = 30), active carbon (S&D = 1022.47 mg/kg, Unam = 361.60 mg/kg, P < .0001, n = 30), and reduction in bulk density (S&D = 0.89 g/cm3, Unam = 1.47 g/cm3, P < .0001, n = 30). Application of the S&D process provides an alternative to using specified soils and has potential for improving long term soil quality using locally sourced materials and simple methods.  相似文献

Roads destroy natural habitats. To reduce erosion, support wildlife and decorate surroundings, ornamental trees are planted near the roadside. However, it is inadequately understood how roads influence fruit production of trees and birds that consume their fruits, within urban landscapes. During the autumn and winter of 2012–2013, we studied the extent to which birds used the fruit from rowanberry trees (Sorbus aucuparia), in two cities along a 700 km latitudinal gradient in Finland. In matched pair design (total of 35 pairs), we compared roadside trees (approximately 8 m from main roads) with trees grown away from roads (control trees; approximately >80 m from the roads). During the autumn, each rowanberry tree pair was photographed, and frugivorous birds were surveyed twice per month until all of the rowanberry fruit-crop was consumed. There was no difference in fruit crop size between roadside trees and control trees. A total of eight frugivorous bird species and 960 individuals were observed foraging in roadside trees. The three most abundant species were Bohemian waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus, 56.4%), Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator, 28.9%) and Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris, 10.5%). Total abundance and species richness of frugivorous birds were lower around roadside trees than control trees during most of the study period. Fruits were consumed later from roadside trees than from control trees, probably due to human-caused disturbance. Therefore, roadside rowanberry trees extended the period when frugivorous birds stayed in urban habitats. Later consumption of fruits in northern areas than in southern areas was related to earlier peak abundance of frugivorous birds in south than in north. Our results indicated that rowanberry is a suitable ornamental tree for urban and roadside landscaping and may additionally benefit birds and other frugivorous wildlife.  相似文献

In clayey and calcareous soils without a stable irrigation and fertilization system, the type of rootstock can particularly affect both the vegetative and productive properties of ‘Suncrest’ peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) plants, and the qualitative and nutritional attributes of their fruit. The GF677 rootstock (P. persica × Prunus amygdalus) promoted the highest vegetative development, followed by Julior (Prunus insistitia). The ‘Suncrest’ on Ishtara [(Prunus cerasifera × P. persica) × (P. cerasifera × Prunus salicina)] and Barrier1 (P. persica × Prunus davidiana) had lower, but similar, plant vigour, but the latter rootstock differed in its higher production of pruned wood. The lowest adaptability to these cultivation conditions was observed for ‘Suncrest’ grafted onto Citation (P. persica × P. salicina), which showed the lowest plant development and production. For the plant yield, the ‘Suncrest’ grafted onto GF677, Julior, Ishtara, and Barrier1 were all similar. The fruit yield and both the canopy volume and pruned wood of ‘Suncrest’ grafted onto Ishtara showed a particular relationship, giving the best indices of yield efficiency and plant physiological equilibrium. Moreover, the same rootstock promoted the largest fruit size, while the smallest fruit were found on GF677 rootstock. The fruit from the Citation ‘Suncrest’ ripened 3 days early, while those from Barrier1 had a late fruit ripening. Firmness, soluble solids and the soluble solids to total acidity ratio were only affected slightly by the different rootstocks, while the total acidity of the fruit varied significantly according to rootstock; the fruit from ‘Suncrest’ grafted onto Barrier1, Julior, and Citation had the highest total acidities. The rootstock effects on the nutritional attributes of the fruit were relevant. The ‘Suncrest’ on Julior and GF677, followed by Ishtara, produced fruit with the greatest antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents. The ‘Suncrest’ on Citation and, especially, Barrier1 had reduced nutritional values of the fruit. The variations in antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents showed a positive correlation.  相似文献

This study describes a protocol for rapid and large-scale in vitro propagation of the valuable medicinal herb Vitis thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc.. Culture conditions influencing shoot proliferation and rooting of the two clones (three- and five-lobed) were examined. Three medium formulations, Murashige-Skoog (MS), Woody Plant Medium (WPM) and Nitsch and Nitsch (NN) medium, were tested for growth of shoot tip culture, and WPM was found to have a superior proliferation rate. The chlorophyll content of leaves was highest in those cultured on NN, followed by those on MS and WPM medium. WPM medium supplemented with 0.5 mg l−1 6-benzyladenine (BA) displayed the highest proliferation rate (15–19 nodes or 3–4 shoots per explant). The rooting was optimized using MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg l−1 napthaleneacetic (NAA) with eight roots, 3 cm long after 1 month of culture. High frequency callus formation was observed in the basal end of explants cultured on NAA-containing medium. Following acclimatization, rooting plantlets were transferred to the plastic house with a 95% survival rate.  相似文献

We studied the effects of Fe deficiency on physiological parameters of citrus rootstocks grown in nutrient solution. Three 4-week old rootstocks (‘Troyer’ citrange – Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf., Citrus taiwanica Tan. and Shim., and ‘Swingle’ citrumelo – Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. × Citrus paradisi Macf.) were grown in nutrient solutions with 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 μmol Fe dm−3. Calcium carbonate (1 g dm−3) was added to all solutions to mimic the natural conditions in calcareous soils. For each rootstock, shoot length, number of leaves, and root and shoot dry weights were measured at the end of experiment. Chlorophyll concentration was estimated using a portable SPAD-502 meter calibrated for each rootstock. The amount of nutrients (P, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) was determined in shoots. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (F0: basal fluorescence; Fm: maximum fluorescence; Fv = FmF0: variable fluorescence) were measured with a portable fluorimeter. ‘Troyer’ citrange rootstock was the most tolerant to Fe deficiency. These plants grew more and accumulated more chlorophyll and nutrients than the others in the presence of low levels of Fe (10 μmol Fe dm−3). ‘Swingle’ citrumelo plants needed 20 μmol Fe dm−3 in the nutrient solution to secure adequate growth. ‘Taiwanica’ orange rootstock had an intermediate behaviour, but could be distinguished from ‘Troyer’ citrange based on fluorescence parameters, since there was a variation in the basal fluorescence in the former, whereas in ‘Troyer’ citrange the basal fluorescence was not affected by the supply of Fe.  相似文献
