The authors examined 585 samples from 92 mares of 2 studs and 346 nasal swabs taken from their foals for the presence of mycoplasmas. The positive rates of mares and foals were 81.5% and 71.7%, respectively, with positivity of samples being variable. Clinical symptoms developed in 2-4 waves and lasted 3-7 days, with intervals of 7-12 days. The disease started in April among foals born in February, at an average age of 88 days. Later on, the average age of the affected foals decreased. There was a correlation between presence of mycoplasmas in nasal cavity and disease of foals. 相似文献

Congestive heart failure associated with a large transverse left ventricular moderator band in a cat
Cardiomyopathy associated with abnormal trabecular bands of tissue traversing one or both ventricles is reported rarely in cats. The case of a 9-year-old cat which presented in congestive heart failure is reported. Multiple cardiac abnormalities were found, including a large trabecular tissue bridge which bisected the left ventricle. Other findings included arrhythmia, thrombocytopaenia and raised serum creatine kinase. The cat was euthanased due to clinical deterioration. Necropsy findings included increased cardiac weight, the division of the left ventricle by a large trabecular band composed of connective tissue and cardiac myofibres consistent with a moderator band, nodular thickening of the mitral valve, left atrial dilation, and fibroplasia/fibrosis of the left ventricular myocardium associated with widespread myofibre necrosis due to infarction. Pathological findings in this case differ from previous reports of ventricular transverse bridging tissue in cats with cardiac disease. 相似文献

Clinical, microbiological, haematological, and immunological investigations were carried out in mares and their foals of 2 studs. A considerable number of foals fell ill with pneumonia, the mortality rate was high. Mycoplasmas were mostly isolated from nasal swabs and from the lungs. The isolation rate of bacteria was lower. Serum IgG concentration was reduced in the diseased or dead foals compared to that of healthy animals, the data stress in importance of IgG in the development of respiratory diseases also in foals. 相似文献

Magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) were performed in an 8-year-old, spayed female cat with chronic effort respiration at the inspiration phase and stertor. Increased bone opacity in the areas of the head, neck and thorax were observed on radiography. MR images showed no signal intensity on both transverse T1WI and T2WI of the nasal cavity. CT revealed increased bone density and hypertrophy of the nasal turbinate and a narrowed nasal passage. From these results, we concluded this case had osteopetrosis-like disease, and that the respiratory distress was caused by hypertrophy of the nasal turbinate. 相似文献

A 4-year-old castrated domestic shorthair cat was referred for treatment of chylothorax. Thoracic duct lymphangiography revealed partial obstruction of the cranial vena cava, as evidenced by filling of mediastinal lymphatics with dye instead of all of the dye entering the vena cava. The thoracic duct was ligated via left 10th intercostal space thoracotomy. Immediate postligation lymphangiography revealed successful duct ligation. Results of a serum ELISA for adult heartworm antigen that was performed before surgery were positive. Drug treatment for the heartworm disease was not recommended, because the pleural effusion had ceased (as determined by radiographic examination 3.5 and 9 months after surgery) and the cat was doing well clinically. Sixteen months after surgery, the owner reported that the cat was doing well and did not have signs of respiratory problems. 相似文献

Primary hypoparathyroidism caused by lymphocytic parathyroiditis was diagnosed in a cat. Other causes of hypocalcemia (ethylene glycol toxicosis, phosphate enema administration, pancreatitis, renal insufficiency, and malabsorption) were ruled out on the basis of history, clinicopathologic data, and lack of supportive clinical signs, which in this cat included inappetence and tetanic muscle spasms. The diagnosis was confirmed by histologic examination of a surgically excised thyroparathyroid lobe that comprised lack of recognizable parathyroid tissue and a lymphocytic plasmacytic infiltrate adjacent to the cranial pole. A treatment regimen similar to that for iatrogenic postthyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism was successful in controlling clinical signs of the disease. 相似文献

A 12-year-old neutered male domestic short-haired cat was presented for rapid breathing, lethargy of two weeks duration and chronic weight loss. A diagnosis of toxoplasma-induced pneumonia was made based on clinical signs, laboratory data, radiology, immunoglobulin M (IgM) serology and isolation of the organism from a lung aspirate. A passive haemagglutination test to measure immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels against toxoplasma was negative. The reliability of agglutination tests, to accurately diagnose an acute toxoplasma infection is questioned. In acute infections the use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for IgM may be more specific. 相似文献

Background: A 35-day-old male lamb with Mycoplasma ovis infection (previously Eperyihrozoon avis ) was evaluated because of severe hypoglycemia (serum glucose 4 mg/dL, Hitachi 704 automated chemistry analyzer) inconsistent with the animal's condition. Whole blood glucose concentration measured with a glucometer was 74 mg/dL. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate this discrepancy through in vitro evaluation of the patient's blood.
Methods: Blood was incubated alone, with increasing concentrations of plasma, or with equine serum of known glucose concentration for 0,15, 30, and 60 minutes at room temperature; end-point glucose concentrations were compared with blood from a control sheep handled similarly.
Results: A rapid decline in glucose concentration was observed in heparinized or EDTA anticoagulated whole blood from the infected lamb incubated alone or with the equine serum. Glucose concentrations in incubated samples from a control sheep remained stable. Incubation of increasing concentrations of heparinized blood with autologous plasma resulted in decreased glucose concentrations in patient, but not control, blood. As parasitemia decreased after treatment, serum glucose concentration increased, serum lactate concentration decreased, and in vitro glucose concentration stabilized.
Conclusions: These findings are consistent with parasite-associated in vitro glucose consumption. An increase in the lamb's plasma glucose concentration associated with reduction of parasite load suggested excess glucose consumption also may have occurred in vivo. 相似文献

Objective – To report a case of bilateral uveitis believed to be a consequence of septic peritonitis in a 19‐month‐old cat. Case Summary – Bilateral anterior uveitis with suspicion of extension to the posterior segment was documented in a previously healthy young cat during hospitalization for severe septic peritonitis. Based on medical history and other findings uveitis was believed to result from concurrent abdominal sepsis, due either to metastatic seeding of bacterial organisms or to effects of bacterial toxins and inflammatory mediators on the blood‐aqueous barrier. The cat was surgically and medically managed, and made a full recovery with respect to both his ocular and his abdominal disease. New or Unique Information Provided – Ocular complications secondary to systemic sepsis are well documented in people but seldom reported in the veterinary literature. To the authors' knowledge this is the first report of uveitis linked to septic peritonitis in any veterinary species and the first to report sepsis‐related uveitis in a cat. Ocular inflammatory disease in the context of critical illness deserves attention as a potential significant source of morbidity. The development of ocular inflammatory disease may serve as a sentinel lesion for systemic sepsis and other life‐threatening conditions. 相似文献

Chronic bronchopneumonia associated with microlithiasis was diagnosed in a 9-year-old domestic shorthair cat with a 3-month history of coughing and dyspnea. Thoracic radiography revealed multifocal patchy alveolar infiltrates in all lung fields. Numerous acellular, concentrically laminated, periodic acid-Schiff-positive microliths were seen in mucus from tracheal washing. Microliths were composed primarily of calcium carbonate. A definite cause could not be identified. There was no response to treatment and the cat was euthanatized. Marked type-II alveolar cell proliferation, peribronchiolar smooth muscle proliferation, and alveolar microlithiasis were seen histologically. Microliths are rarely encountered in tracheal washings from companion animals. Their pathophysiologic properties and meaning remain to be established. 相似文献
