Accurate diagnosis and effective therapeutics of uterine pathologies in cattle represent some of the daily preoccupations for the veterinarians involved in herd health medicine. A rational approach requires a competence based on fundamental and clinical knowledge.

The physiological aspects of the uterine involution in cattle are reviewed with emphasis about the in utero bacteriological dynamic and the endocrinological evolution during this period. The pathogenesis of uterine pathologies is discussed following new research results and new knowledge on the mechanisms of uterine defense. The value and limitations of the clinical diagnosis is briefly reviewed. The therapeutics of uterine pathologies is debated in relation with the pathophysiology of the uterine involution and with the rational of the traditional and new concepts of the treatment of the postpartum uterine pathologies.

The objective of this study was to analyze the efficiency of embryo collection and transfer in Angora goats during the breeding season. Synchronization was obtained by placing an intravaginal sponge for either a short period of time (11 days + PGF) or a long period (17 to 21 days). Thirty-three goats were superovulated, embryo collection was not attempted on seven goats (four did not respond to the superovulation treatment, three did not show estrus), and four gave oocytes only. The embryos of one goat are still frozen. The remaining 21 goats produced 285 embryos of which 187 (66%) were transferred (fresh or thawed) to 66 recipients; 36 (55%) recipients remained pregnant and gave birth to 63 kids (34% of the transferred embryos). The superovulation and transfer techniques used in this study provided a large number of transferable embryos. However, the percentage of embryos that reach term could be improved by more strict selection of the recipients and of the embryos to be transferred, and by improving the embryo freezing technique.  相似文献

The use of monensin premix in dairy cows: Simple and essential steps for ensuring its proper use. Dietary monensin, containing monensin sodium as active ingredient, is frequently used on dairy farms in Canada. Although the use of monensin is safe, some overdose situations have been reported following consumption of higher than recommended doses. A regular monitoring of bulk tank milk fat percentage should be performed to ensure quick detection of a potential overdose situation. Diarrhea and sudden drop in dry matter intake are other potential clinical signs of monensin overdose. Quick detection of such cases will allow rapid correction of the situation.(Translated by the authors)  相似文献
