In the daytime, a CO2 depletion of 10–15% and air circulation of less than 0.5 m s−1 often occur in a naturally ventilated greenhouse during a sunny day with high wind speed (3–5 m s−1). We, therefore, investigated the effects of moderate increase of the CO2 concentration above the atmospheric level (500–600 μmol mol−1) and air circulation up to 1.0 m s−1 in a growth chamber on the net photosynthetic and transpiration rates of tomato seedlings as the first step. The average net photosynthetic rates were 2.1, 1.8, and 1.6 times higher in the growth chambers with increased CO2 concentration (500–600 μmol mol−1) and air circulation (1.0 m s−1), increased CO2 concentration, and increased air circulation, respectively, compared with those in the control (no increase in CO2 concentration (200–300 μmol mol−1) or air circulation (0.3 m s−1). The transpiration rate increased with increased air circulation, while it decreased with increased CO2 concentration regardless of air circulation. From the results, we consider that increasing the CO2 concentration and/or air circulation in ventilated greenhouses up to the outside concentration (350–450 μmol mol−1) and 1.0 m s−1, respectively, can significantly increase the net photosynthetic rate of greenhouse plants. 相似文献

Three ornamental bromeliads, i.e. Aechmea ‘Maya’ (CAM), Aechmea fasciata ‘Primera’ (CAM) and Guzmania ‘Hilda’ (C3) were grown under greenhouse conditions at ambient (380 ppm) and elevated (750 ppm) CO2. The effects of long-term exposure (34 weeks) to elevated CO2 on growth and morphological traits constituting the ornamental value were assessed. 相似文献

This study examined the vegetative and reproductive growth responses of the crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) vine-cactus fruit crop species Hylocereus undatus and Selenicereus megalanthus to CO2 enrichment (1000 μmol mol−1 vs. control of 380 μmol mol−1). H. undatus plants enriched with CO2 demonstrated 52%, 22%, 18%, and 175% increases, relative to plants measured in ambient CO2, in total daily net CO2 uptake, shoot elongation, shoot dry mass, and number of reproductive buds, respectively. The responses of S. megalanthus plants exposed to elevated CO2 were greater than those of H. undatus under the same conditions. Compared to plant responses in ambient CO2, under conditions of CO2 enrichment, S. megalanthus showed 129%, 73%, 68%, and 233% increases in total daily net CO2 uptake, shoot elongation, shoot dry mass, and number of reproductive buds, respectively. Moreover, for H. undatus, there was no significant change in fruit fresh mass although it showed a slight (7%) upward trend. On the other hand, fruit fresh mass of S. megalanthus significantly increased by 63% in response to elevated CO2. These results indicate the high potential of CAM plants to respond to CO2 enrichment. It is thus apparent that S. megalanthus grown under CO2 enrichment may benefit from elevated CO2 to a greater extent than H. undatus grown under sub-optimal growth conditions. 相似文献

Better knowledge of patterns of carbon allocation in plants growing in CO2-supplemented atmospheres may help to guide more efficient management of CO2 applications in tomato greenhouses. Leaf starch and LMA (leaf mass per unit area) were investigated in commercially grown greenhouse tomato plants to determine the distribution and influence of leaf area and fruit load on these measures. 相似文献

In the present paper we report on the effects of the insertion of the Agrobacterium rhizogenes rolC gene in the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L., formerly Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultivar Tondino. Several transgenic lines were successfully obtained, between which two clones, rolC1 and rolC3, were chosen for the analysis of morpho-productive traits as well as of the endogenous levels of auxin and abscisic acid. Consistent with the known phenotypic effect of this gene, the transformed tomato plants were significantly shorter than the corresponding controls. On the other hand, even if yield was not affected by the transformation in terms of average number of fruits produced, fruit weight was significantly lower in the transgenics with respect to the controls. Therefore, insertion of the rolC gene does not lead to an improvement in plant productivity. 相似文献

Since the response of cuttings to raised CO2 concentration is not documented, controlled atmosphere (CA) storage of kalanchoe cuttings at combinations of high carbon dioxide and low oxygen levels was investigated to study the feasibility of using CA to sustain quality of cuttings prior to planting. During storage, stomata opening and plant fresh weight (FW) were measured, and root formation (RF) was recorded post storage. Storage atmosphere composition (10/2, 15/2, or 15/5; kPa CO2/kPa O2), storage duration (9 or 19 days), and cutting type (rooted or un-rooted) affected stomata conductance (Gs), and influenced FW and subsequent RF in cuttings of kalanchoe ‘Yellow Josefine’. In CA stored plants, Gs was high, 60–160 mmol m−2 s−1, indicating open stomata, whereas in control plants Gs was low, 5–14 mmol m−2 s−1, indicating closed stomata. Generally Gs values were higher for un-rooted than for rooted cuttings. Overall, cutting FW was reduced by CA storage with no significant differences in FW reduction between the CA treatments. RF of un-rooted CA stored cuttings was comparable to that of controls, whereas for rooted cuttings controls grew better than CA stored cuttings. CA at 10 kPa CO2 and 2 kPa O2 for 2–3 weeks could sustain un-rooted cuttings, in a pests-free state whilst retaining the ability of the cuttings RF. The results showed that stomata aperture may be altered by high CO2 concentration combined with low O2, and results indicated that this effect was not only caused by high CO2 but also by low O2 concentration. In addition, the results indicated that CA storage, stomata conductance, and water stress of kalanchoe cuttings may be correlated. Monitoring Gs of leaves of cuttings could be used as a non-destructive indicator of storability and quality status. Based on the novel positive preliminary results reported here, a protocol that focuses on minimising water loss should be developed and optimised for kalanchoe. 相似文献

Chitinase (ChA) and β-1,3-glucanase (GA) activity had been related with plant defense mechanism against pathogen attack in vegetative tissues. Scarce information is available about the behavior of these enzymes in response to different stages of development and fungi infection in fruits. The changes in ChA and GA activities in response to Alternaria alternata infection were evaluated in mature green (MG) and red ripe (RR) developmental stages of Sunpride, Geronimo and Charleston varieties of tomato fruit. Tomato fruits were inoculated with a conidial suspension of A. alternata and stored for 10 days at 25 °C and 90–92 H.R.%. The degree of fruit infection was measured by a hedonic scale every 2 days. ChA activity was determined fluorometrically by quantifying the release of 4-methylumbelliferyll (4-MU) from 4-methylumbelliferyll β-d-N,N′N″-triacetylchitotrioside, and GA activity was measured quantifying the release of glucose from β-1,3-glucan (laminarin) by HPLC. Tomato fruit in RR stage was more susceptible to fungi infection than MG stages. Geronimo was the most resistant variety, whereas Sunpride was the most susceptible for both stages of development (MG and RR). Higher levels of ChA and GA activities were observed for mature green stage in Charleston variety at the end of the storage period. An induction in ChA and GA in response to infection by A. alternata was observed in all varieties. Particularly high levels of ChA were found for inoculated Geronimo in RR stage and inoculated Charleston in MG stage which correlated with low levels of fungi infection. Higher levels of GA induction in response to fungi infection were recorded for Sunpride variety in RR stage, whereas no substantial induction was observed for Geronimo and Charleston varieties at the same stage of development. This GA induction correlated negatively with the resistance showed by the different varieties to fungi infection. We concluded that chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase induction are part of the tomato fruit defense mechanism against A. alternata infection with a different behavior depending upon stage of development and variety. 相似文献

There is little available information on the effects of temperature and CO2 enrichment on stomata anatomical characteristics of plants. Effect of these two microclimates was studied on five rose (Rosa spp.) cultivars, viz. ‘First Red’ (used as check), ‘Arjun’, ‘Raktima’, ‘Raktagandha’ and ‘Pusa Pitamber’. Budded, single-stemmed rose cultivars having five lateral buds were grown in controlled environment growth cabinets under enriched CO2 (1000 μmol mol−1) and optimum (28/18 °C, T0) or high (35/25 °C, T1) temperature for 50 days. All observations were made on the abaxial leaf surface. Significant increases in stomatal density (68.7%), index (29.6%) and epidermal cell density (37.3%) were recorded in plants grown at high temperature over control with CO2 enrichment. The cultivars responded differently in terms of length and width of guard cell and stoma (pore) under high temperature, however, the values averaged over treatments showed a significant reduction in these parameters. Further, number of stomata per leaf was higher (28.3%) in plants grown at high temperature, except First Red. A reduction in mean leaf area (26.7%) and dry mass (32.0%) was recorded at high rather than optimum temperature. The specific leaf area was maximum in Arjun (87%) while in First Red, a 14% reduction was noted at high temperature. 相似文献

Trunks of 8-year-old vigorous ‘Fuyu’ persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) were girdled to a 1 cm width on April 20 and June 10 2004. Tree growth and fruit characteristics were monitored for two years, with special emphasis on the carry-over effect in 2005. Girdling reduced trunk and shoot growth especially of April-girdled trees over two consecutive years. However, the most significant effect of girdling was in the occurrence of water sprouts: a control tree had 29.5 in 2004 and 27.3 in 2005, whereas the April-girdled trees had only 0.3 and 5.3, respectively. Girdling increased fruit set by nearly 50% and enhanced fruit colour in 2004 only. Girdling date did not significantly affect fruit size and soluble solids for two years. Fruit flesh of girdled trees in 2004, especially in the April-girdled trees, had lower N and P concentrations. The levels of starch, soluble sugars, and inorganic elements in flower-bearing distal buds measured just before new growth in 2005 were not significantly altered by the girdling in 2004. 相似文献

Despite problems of low fruit set, small fruit size and alternate bearing, the Hass cultivar dominates commercial avocado production worldwide. To increase yield and fruit size, gibberellic acid (GA3) (25 mg L−1) was applied at different stages of ‘Hass’ avocado tree phenology: (i) mid–late April (flower abscission), end of June–beginning of July (fruit abscission and beginning of the exponential phase of fruit growth), and mid-January (beginning of pre-harvest fruit drop); (ii) end of June–beginning of July; and (iii) mid-September (near the end of the major fruit abscission period; period of exponential fruit growth). In both years of the research, applications of GA3 in April and June–July were within the periods of intense flower and fruit abscission, respectively; fruit abscission was low in September and January. Maximum air temperature was not related to flower or fruit abscission. In the on-crop year (391 fruit per untreated control tree), a single application of GA3 at the end of June–beginning of July significantly increased total yield (kilograms only) and yield of commercially valuable fruit (178–325 g/fruit) (as kilograms and number per tree) compared with the control (P < 0.0001). GA3 applied in September increased total yield (kilograms only) and yield of commercially valuable fruit (kilograms and number per tree) to values intermediate to and not significantly different from all other treatments, except trees receiving multiple applications of GA3. This treatment reduced total yield and yield of commercially valuable fruit (kilograms and number per tree) relative to all treatments (P ≤ 0.0002). In contrast, during the off-crop year (32 fruit per control tree), no GA3 treatment had a significant effect on yield or fruit size compared with the control and all other GA3 treatments. For ‘Hass’ avocado, there was no negative effect from applying GA3 at the end of June–beginning of July in both the off- and on-crop years; 2-year cumulative total yield and yield of commercially valuable fruit were increased by 27 kg (128 fruit) and 22 kg (101 fruit) per tree, respectively, above the yield of untreated control trees (P < 0.0001). 相似文献

The effect of brassinosteroid (BR) on relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthetic rate (PN), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), lipid peroxidation level, activities of antioxidant enzymes and abscisic acid concentration (ABA) in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seedlings under water stress was investigated. Two tomato genotypes, Mill. cv. Ailsa Craig (AC) and its ABA-deficient mutant notabilis (not), were used. Water stress was achieved by withholding water and both the AC and not plants were treated with 1 μM 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) or distilled water as a control. The RWC, gs, Ci and PN were significantly decreased under water stress. However, EBR treatment significantly alleviated water stress and increased the RWC and PN. EBR application also markedly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) while it decreased gs, Ci and the contents of H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA). Interestingly, ABA concentration in AC and not plants was markedly elevated after EBR treatment although the increasing rate and amplitude of ABA in not plants treated by EBR was significantly lower than those in AC plants. Our study suggested that amelioration of the drought stress of tomato seedlings may be caused by EBR-induced elevation of endogenous ABA concentration and/or the activities of antioxidant enzymes. 相似文献

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) play important roles in the transduction of extracellular signals to the intracellular targets in all eukaryotes. Here, a cucumber cDNA designated CsNMAPK, encoding a mitogen-activated protein kinase was isolated using RT-PCR, 3′ and 5′ RACE. The full-length cDNA sequence contains 1636 bp and an open reading frame (ORF) of 1113 bp, which encodes 370 amino acid residues. According to the phylogenetic analysis, CsNMAPK belongs to subgroup I MAPK in plants. Northern blot analysis revealed that CsNMAPK expressed differently in response to excess NO3−. And the CsNMAPK expression kinetics between a salt-resistant cultivar (Xintaimici) and a salt-sensitive cultivar (Shennongchunwu) was slightly different under 182 mmol L−1 NO3− treatment. The mRNA levels also increased after 24 h treatments with H2O2 and salicylic acid (SA), but decreased with abscisic acid (ABA) and low-temperature. However, there was no significant induction of CsNMAPK gene after 24 h drought and high-temperature treatments. Our results suggested that a MAP kinase cascade may function in excess NO3− and other abiotic stresses in cucumber. 相似文献

A tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crop was grown in four greenhouses during the dry season 2005/06 in Central Thailand. Sidewalls and roof vents of two greenhouses were covered with nets and these greenhouses were mechanically ventilated when air temperature exceeded 30 °C (NET). The other two greenhouses were covered with polyethylene film and equipped with a fan and pad cooling system (EVAP). Overall mean air temperature was significantly reduced by 2.6 and 3.2 °C (day) and 1.2 and 2.3 °C (night) in EVAP as compared to NET and outside air, respectively. Temperature maxima in EVAP averaged about 4 °C lower than in NET and outside. The relative humidity was around 20 and 30% (day) and 10 and 15% (night) higher in EVAP than in NET or outside, respectively. Vapour pressure deficit averaged 0.25 kPa in EVAP, 1.03 kPa in NET and 1.48 kPa outside. The crop water-consumption was significantly lower in EVAP (1.2) than in NET (1.8 L plant−1 day−1), which is ascribed to reduced transpiration in EVAP. Total fruit yield was similar in NET (6.4 kg plant−1) and EVAP (6.3 kg plant−1). The quantity of undersized (mostly parthenocarpic) and blossom-end rot (BER)-affected fruits was reduced in EVAP. However, the proportion of marketable yield was significantly higher in NET (4.5 kg plant−1) than in EVAP (3.8 kg plant−1), owing largely to an increased incidence of fruit cracking (FC) in EVAP. Higher FC but lower BER incidence coincided with higher fresh weight and Ca concentration in the fruits in EVAP. It is concluded that in regions with high atmospheric relative humidity evaporative cooling without technical modifications allowing dehumidification will not improve protected tomato production. 相似文献
