Four ruminally fistulated, nonpregnant, nonlactating heifers (515 +/- 7.9 kg) were offered chopped (10-cm screen size) prairie hay for ad libitum consumption with 1.8 kg/d of supplements to provide 0, 45, 113, or 181 g/d of magnesium-mica (MM) in a 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment. Heifers were adapted to diets for 7 d in drylot followed by a 19-d confinement period in individual stalls within a metabolism facility. Total feces and urine were collected for 5 d, daily intake and water consumption were monitored for 16 d, and in situ disappearance of fiber (prairie hay) and CP (soybean meal) were determined during the confinement period. Ruminal samples for fermentation product analyses were collected at feeding and every 2 h thereafter for 12 h on d 18, and rumens were evacuated at 1100 on d 19 to determine rumen fill. Cubic responses (P < .05) to MM level were observed for DM, OM, NDF, and ADF digestion and were characterized by a tendency for improved digestion with 45 g/d compared with the control diet, followed by a suppressive effect on digestion with 113 g/d, then little effect with 181 g/d MM. In situ NDF disappearance at 72 and 96 h tended (P < . 10) to be influenced quadratically by level of MM, but MM level had no apparent effect on ruminal fill and passage rate, ciliated protozoa counts, in situ rate of disappearance of fiber or CP, or nitrogen balance. Therefore, feeding MM at low levels to heifers consuming a prairie hay diet with a 20% CP supplement seemed to be beneficial for feed digestion with no measurable negative impact on intake or ruminal protein or fiber digestion.  相似文献

Thirty-two mature, pregnant beef cows (avg age 8 yr, body wt 550 kg) grazing oat pastures were used to determine the effects of lasalocid on serum mineral and ruminal fluid volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations. Cows were blocked by breed type and assigned randomly to eight, 2-ha pastures containing oat forage from December 17, 1985 to May 6, 1986. The cows were fed .25 kg of ground corn with or without 200 mg of lasalocid daily. Based upon analyses of forage mineral composition (.53, .25, .14, .3 and 2.5% of dry matter for Ca, P, Mg, Na and K, respectively), all macrominerals except Mg were in sufficient quantities to meet the requirement for lactating cows. Lasalocid supplementation did not affect serum Mg, K or Zn concentrations (P greater than .05). During the April sampling, serum Ca was higher (P less than .05) and serum Na was lower (P less than .05) in cows supplemented with lasalocid compared with controls. The molar proportion of acetate was decreased (P less than .05) in ruminal fluid of cows fed lasalocid by d 56 (February 11); the molar proportions of acetate and butyrate were decreased (P less than .05), which decreased (P less than .05) the acetate: propionate ratio by d 84 (March 11) of supplementation. This study suggests that lasalocid is effective in altering ruminal VFA and serum mineral concentrations in cows grazing small grain forages.  相似文献

The effects of lasalocid on fall-calving beef cows were examined in a 196-d trial that began October 12, 1983. Forty-two crossbred cow-calf pairs were stratified to six groups by breed, calving date and sex of calf. Three replications of each of two treatments, 0 and 200 mg lasalocid X head-1 X d-1, were used. The cows were fed a combination of haylage and grass hay ad libitum. The cow-calf pairs were allowed access to pasture at all times, except during the breeding season. At this time they were kept in confinement to facilitate heat detection and artificial insemination. Cow weight changes and body condition (0 = very thin, 9 = very fat) were unaffected (P greater than .10) by feeding lasalocid to the cows. Twelve-hour milk production per cow, percent fat and percent protein were each determined three times during the trial. A slight increase in milk yield was observed in treated cows (P greater than .10). Percent milk fat and protein were also unaffected by treatment (P greater than .10). Lasalocid supplementation of cows did not affect calf gain or 205-d adjusted weaning weight (P greater than .10). Average days open was evaluated for the cows. There were no differences between treatments for actual average days open (P greater than .10). No detrimental effects were observed in long-term feeding of lasalocid to fall-calving beef cows.  相似文献

One hundred forty-three crossbred, fall-calving first-calf heifers were used to determine the effects of two levels of energy and two levels of lasalocid on cow-calf productivity. Diets fed for approximately 110 d prepartum were calculated to provide a daily intake of 15.3 (LE) or 18.0 (HE) Mcal ME; diets fed for approximately 130 d postpartum were calculated to provide a daily intake of 17.8 (LE) or 21.0 (HE) Mcal ME. Two supplements were fed with each energy level to provide a calculated 0 (C) or 200 mg.hd-1.d-1 lasalocid (L). Heifers fed HE gained .06 kg more (P = .08) per day prepartum than LE heifers. There was an interaction (P less than .05) between treatment and prepartum days on trial for heifer weight approximately 2 wk prepartum and body condition at calving. Energy had no effect on heifer weight at 2 wk prepartum or condition score at calving when estimated and compared at 90 d on trial. However, regression estimates for 130 d on trial showed that HE heifers would have been 19 kg heavier (P less than .001) and would have had .4 unit higher condition score (P less than .01) than LE heifers. Energy and lasalocid had no effect (P greater than .05) on hip height or pelvic area at calving or on calf birth weight, calving ease score or gestation length. Cows fed HE weighed 17 kg more (P less than .05) and had .5 unit higher (P less than .001) condition score than LE cows at approximately 130 d postpartum. Lasalocid had little effect on postpartum changes in weight or body condition. Lasalocid supplementation to the LE diet tended to increase milk production and calf weight, whereas supplementation to the HE diet did not. Feeding the LE diet decreased (P less than .05) cycling activity by 18 percentage points and decreased (P less than .01) overall pregnancy rate by 25 percentage points. Lasalocid had no influence on reproductive performance.  相似文献

The frequency of occurrence of behavioral estrus without subsequent development of functional luteal tissue (termed nonpuberal estrus, NPE), was determined in 43 Simmental X Hereford-Brahman heifers. Blood samples were collected weekly from the start of the study to first behavioral estrus and then daily from d 1 (d 0 = estrus) through d 14 following first and subsequently observed estrous behaviors. All blood samples were analyzed for serum progesterone (P4) concentrations by radioimmunoassay. More heifers (62.8%) exhibited NPE than had luteal development after their first behavioral estrus (37.2%). There was a tendency for fewer light-weight heifers (less than or equal to 240 kg at the start of the experiment) to exhibit a puberal first estrus compared with the heavy-weight (greater than 240 kg at the start of the experiment) heifers (31.2% vs 68.8%, respectively; P = .12). Heifers that had a puberal first estrus were older (376 +/- 12 d vs 334 +/- 9 d, P less than .05) compared with heifers that had NPE. Weight at first behavioral estrus was similar between heifers that had a puberal first estrus and those that had NPE (298 +/- 8 kg and 289 +/- 6 kg, respectively). More heifers that had a puberal first estrus also had an elevation in serum P4 concentrations before that first estrus (64.3% vs 20.0%, P less than .05), and the serum P4 elevation was greater (2.5 +/- .4 ng vs 1.2 +/- .1 ng, P less than .05) than heifers that had NPE. We have concluded from these results that NPE is a common occurrence in heifers approaching puberty.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Serum electrolytes, minerals, blood biochemical and plasma enzymes were studied in heat exposed buffalo heifers supplemented with yeast powder in feed to alleviate the adverse effects of heat stress. Eighteen healthy Murrah buffalo heifers (270-280) kg were divided into three groups. Animals of group I were kept in shed and served as control, while group II and group III were exposed in a psychrometric chamber at 40°C for 4?hrs daily for 16?days continuously. The animals in group III were also supplemented with yeast powder at 10?g per animal per day. The serum sodium, potassium and chloride levels decreased significantly (P?相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the composition of stockpiled fescue from December through February over 2 yr and to determine the performance of heifers grazing stockpiled fescue with or without supplemental whole cottonseed. In early December, 36 heifers (initial BW 277 +/- 0.70 kg, yr 1; 266 +/- 2.2 kg, yr 2; and initial BCS of 5.0 +/- 0.04) were assigned randomly to 6 groups. Each group was assigned randomly to a 2.4-ha tall fescue pasture (98% endophyte infected), which had received 76 kg of N/ha on September 1. Group was the experimental unit for all measures. Forage DM available during grazing (to ground level) averaged 3,913 and 5,370 kg/ha in yr 1 and 2, respectively. The pasture was strip-grazed for 83 d, with daily forage allocation. Three groups were fed whole cottonseed (0.90 kg of DM/heifer; 24.4% CP, DM basis) daily at 0.33% of BW, and a small amount of a corn-based concentrate (0.19 kg of DM/heifer) to assure complete cottonseed consumption. Nutritive value of forage (dry basis) was determined each week by sampling each pasture to the 5-cm target grazing height. Forage disappearance was estimated every 2 wk from pre- and postgraze forage mass. Forage CP was 16.8% in yr 1 and 12.6% in yr 2. In vitro true organic matter digestibility (IVTOMD) was 82.0 and 71.9%, and ADF was 25.9 and 30.7% in yr 1 and 2, respectively. Most indicators of forage quality declined slightly through the winter, although they recovered in late winter in yr 1. The proportion of fescue that was green declined (P < 0.05) from December (79% in yr 1 and 64% in yr 2) to February (62% in yr 1 and 52% in yr 2). Green tissue averaged 20.4 and 15.2% CP, 91 and 87% IVTOMD, and 22.1 and 23.3% ADF in yr 1 and 2, respectively. Brown tissue averaged 10.3 and 8.5% CP, 64 and 62% IVTOMD, and 35.7 and 37.4% ADF in yr 1 and 2, respectively. Shrunk ADG (0.46 vs. 0.56 kg/d in yr 1 and 0.23 vs. 46 kg/d in yr 2) and change in BCS (- 0.03 vs. 0.33 in yr 1 and 0.13 vs. 0.5 in yr 2) was greater (P < 0.05) for supplemented heifers. Supplemented heifers had greater serum urea nitrogen in yr 1 (9.5 vs. 10.5 mg/dL; P < 0.07) and yr 2 (7.2 vs. 8.6 mg/dL; P < 0.01). Forage disappearance was similar between supplemented and unsupplemented heifers (3.19 vs. 3.39 kg.heifer(-1).d(-1) in yr 1 and 4.14 vs. 4.17 kg.heifer(-1).d(-1) in yr 2, respectively). Heifers responded to supplementation, but performance was lower than expected based on forage nutrient content.  相似文献

Energy metabolism in lactating beef heifers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To obtain measurements of energy balance in lactating beef cows, respiration calorimetry and digestion trials were conducted using seven lactating (613 kg BW) and three nonlactating (598 kg BW) Hereford x Angus heifers fed a pelleted 75% alfalfa:25% concentrate diet. Five measurements of energy balance were obtained at 6- to 7-wk intervals beginning 6 to 10 wk postpartum in lactating heifers and at 6-wk intervals in nonlactating heifers. Milk yield was measured using a combination of weigh-suckle-weigh and machine milking to adapt heifers to milking by machine without the use of oxytocin. Heifers were milked only by machine during measurements of energy balance. Weekly milk yield averages ranged from 8.2 kg/d at wk 5 postpartum to 3.2 kg/d at wk 32 postpartum. When scaled to BW(.75), the regression of NE1 on ME intake and the regression of ME intake on NE1 were remarkably similar to previously published regressions for measurements obtained from lactating Holstein-Friesian cows. The average daily maintenance energy requirement from these regressions was 503 kJ ME/kg BW(.75), a value similar to the average value reported previously for lactating Holstein-Friesian cows (488 kJ/kg (BW.75)). This is in contrast to numerous published comparisons of the maintenance requirements of cattle breed types in the nonlactating state and current NRC standards for estimating maintenance energy requirements of beef and dairy cattle. The results of the present study suggest that when expressed on the basis of BW(.75) the efficiency of utilization of incremental ME above maintenance for milk and tissue energy (i.e., NE1) is similar among lactating Hereford x Angus heifers and lactating Holstein-Friesian cows. The breeds differ in terms of their propensity for milk yield and the resulting partition of ME between milk synthesis and tissue energy retention.  相似文献

The effects of two levels of concentrate and ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) on performance, intake, digestibility, carcass characteristics, meat quality traits, and commercial cuts yield were assessed. Twenty crossbred heifers (240 kg average body weight) were used. At the beginning of the trial, four animals were slaughtered as reference group and the 16 remaining animals were randomly assigned to four treatments, in a 2 × 2 factorial design: two levels of concentrate (40% and 80%, dry matter (DM) basis) and two levels of RUP (48.79% and 27.19% of CP). At the end of the trial, all the animals were slaughtered. There was no interaction (P > 0.05) between concentrate and RUP levels. Dry matter intake and nutrients digestibility was not affected (P > 0.05) by RUP level. Heifers fed the highest RUP level had greater (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG). Concentrate level did not affect (P > 0.05) DMI and ADG. Heifers fed diets with 80% concentrate had greater intake of TDN and EE, and lower intake of NDF (P < 0.05). The digestibilities of all nutrients, except the NDF, were greater (P < 0.05) for the 80% concentrate diets. The RUP levels did not affect (P > 0.05) the carcass characteristics and carcass gain composition. Heifers fed 80% concentrate diets had larger (P < 0.05) longissimus muscle area and lower gain of bones (P < 0.05). Concentrate level did not affect (P > 0.05) the composition of carcass gain. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of RUP and concentrate levels on meat quality traits and commercial cut yields.  相似文献

Weaned replacement heifers were implanted with zeranol at 8 and 11 mo of age in two trials to evaluate growth and reproductive traits. Approximately 100 beef heifers were used in each trial, and the heifers were divided into categories of heavier than average (H) and lighter than average (L) weaning weight. Weight categories were further divided into control (HC and LC) and zeranol-implanted (HI and LI) groups. Heifers were kept in drylot from weaning to just before the start of the breeding season and were fed to reach a predetermined body weight by the start of the breeding season and were fed to reach a predetermined body weight by the start of the breeding season. Rates of gain in the drylot were greater in implanted than in control heifers in both trial 1 (.53 vs .48 kg/d; P less than .09) and trial 2 (.70 vs .63 kg/d; P less than .01). Pelvic areas were greater (P less than .01) in implanted than in control heifers of both trial 1 (175 vs 159 cm2) and trial 2 (175 vs 164 cm2). This increase in pelvic size was still present at the end of the summer pasture period, which followed the drylot period. Zeranol had no major effect (P greater than .10) on age of weight at puberty. Fall pregnancy rate was 16% lower in implanted heifers than in control heifers in trial 1 (62 vs 78%, P = .08) but did not differ in trial 2 (88 vs 87%, I and C, respectively).  相似文献

Factors influencing calving difficulty in beef heifers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Records of 547, 2-yr-old heifers of three breed groups were used to evaluate the relative influence of dam's body and pelvic measurements, calf birth weight, sire birth weight and some relative measures (ratios) of calf birth weight and dam weight at calving on calving difficulty. The data were analyzed by regression and least squares procedures. The full model explained 32.5% of the variation in calving difficulty score. The linear effect of calf birth weight was the most important variable, accounting for 17.8% reduction in the coefficient of determination, and together with dam weight at calving and the quadratic effect of calf birth weight it accounted for 92% for all the variation explained by the full model. Dam weight at calving was negatively related to calving difficulty. Breed, year and sex of calf did not influence calving difficulty score, except when the calf birth weight or dam weight or both were excluded from the model. When calf birth weight was expressed as a ratio of the dam's weight at calving, hip height and pelvic measurements, the total model explained 34.8% of the variation in calving difficulty score. The ratio of calf birth weight to dam weight was the most important variable (R2 = 26.8%). Ratios of calf to dam weight at calving and calf weight to the vertical pelvic diameter (R2 = 29.3%) were the only significant factors when the effects of calf birth weight and dam weight were removed from the model. Pelvic measurements, on their own, did not influence calving difficulty score in this study (P greater than .1), but small pelvic dimensions tended to be associated with higher calving difficulty scores.  相似文献

Induced Tritrichomonas foetus infection in beef heifers   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Four virgin beef heifers were inoculated intravaginally with 7 x 10(6) Tritrichomonas foetus organisms. Protozoal colonization of the vagina, cervix, and uterus developed within the first week after inoculation. Protozoa were no longer detected in secretions from these regions at approximately the same time in each heifer. Trichomonads were detected in reproductive tract secretions for 13 to 28 weeks. Eight weeks after clearance of trichomonads from the reproductive tract, a second infection was established in 2 of the 4 heifers by intravaginal inoculation of T foetus. The second infections were maintained for up to 4 weeks. The diagnostic sensitivity of wet-mount examination of the reproductive tract secretions was 30%, compared with 78% for culture of trichomonads in secretions. Collection and culturing of specimens of cervical and vaginal mucus provided the most reliable method for diagnosis of trichomoniasis during induced infection of heifers.  相似文献

Crossbred beef heifers (n = 78) were assigned randomly to one of three treatments. Heifers received either no implant, one estradiol-releasing implant (Compudose), or two estradiol-releasing implants. Heifers were implanted at birth and then reimplanted every 150 d. Calves were maintained with the cows until weaning at approximately 200 d of age. Heifers were placed in the feedlot as one group and fed a growing diet for 56 d. Following the growing phase, heifers were segregated into their respective treatment groups and fed until selected by industry buyers for harvest. Beginning at 1 yr of age and continuing every 14 d until puberty or harvest, heifers were palpated per rectum, and blood samples were collected for determination of ovarian activity and attainment of puberty. Serum progesterone of > or =1 ng/mL and(or) palpation of a detectable corpus luteum were criteria of puberty. At weaning and again at harvest, an x-ray was taken of the left front leg of six heifers selected randomly from each group. Metacarpal bones III and IV from the same animals were collected at harvest and transected for determination of epiphyseal plate closure. The x-ray scores and the actual measurements had a correlation of .94. Epiphyseal plate closure occurred in a dose-related manner, with heifers on the higher dose of estrogen having earlier plate closure than heifers on the lower dose. At harvest, reproductive tissues and carcass data were collected for all heifers. Eighteen of 25 untreated control heifers (P < .05), 6 of 26 heifers treated with one implant, and 2 of 26 heifers treated with two implants attained puberty by the end of the experiment. No differences (P > .10) were detected among treatment groups for carcass traits. These data suggest that early and continuous treatment of heifers with estradiol implants can retard reproductive function.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted in western Canada to evaluate the impact of antiparasitic treatment on weight gain and reproductive performance in beef replacement heifers from weaning to first breeding. Treatment of heifers at weaning with ivermectin increased the rate of weight gain in comparison to treatment with fenthion. The feed efficiency of ivermectin-treated animals was also significantly better than those treated with fenthion. Increased weight was associated with an increased number of animals in estrus at the end of the feeding period for heifers receiving ivermectin. We concluded that treatment with ivermectin improved feed efficiency and weight gain in heifers from weaning to breeding. In turn, this weight gain appeared to be associated with an increased number of heifers in estrus.  相似文献
