Erratum

In the report "Fatty acids ... smooth muscle cells" by J. J. Huttner et al. (15 July, p. 289), Table 1 was reset after the authors had approved their galleys. Through faulty proofreading at Science, an omitted line was not detected and the table as printed is meaningless. The body of Table 1 should read.     

Erratum

In the report "Transcontinental baselines and the rotation of the earth measured by radio interferometry" by I. I. Shapiro et al. [186, 920 (1974)], the heading for columns 5 and 6 of Table 1 should read "Atomic time-universal time (A.1-UT.1)" and the second entry of column 1 should be followed by a double dagger (double dagger).     

Mechanism of Antibody Synthesis: Size Differences between Mouse Kappa Chains

In the report "Mechanism of antibody synthesis: size differences between mouse kappa chains" by W. R. Gray et al. (27 Jan., p. 465), the headings of the final two columns of Table 1 should be reversed to read "Transversions" and "Transitions."     

Erratum

In the report by N. Yamamoto et al., "Transformation of human leukocytes by cocultivation with an adult T cell leukemia virus producer cell line" (20 Aug., p. 737), the column headings in Table 1, on page 738, under "Cells with markers (%)," should have read: Leu 1, Leu 2a, Leu 3a, Leu 4, and Ia (not immunoglobulin A).     

Inhibition of the Effect of Some Carcinogens by Their Partially Hydrogenated Derivatives

The names of the compounds in the last three lines of Table 1 in "Inhibition of the effect of some carcinogens by their partially hydrogenated derivatives" by Kotin, Falk, Lijinsky, and Zechmeister [Science 123, 102 (20 Jan. 1956)] should read dihydrodibenzanthracene, decahydrodibenzanthracene, and perhydrodibenzanthracene.     

Lactate dehydrogenase isozymes: further kinetic studies at high enzyme concentration

In the report "Lactate dehydrogenase isozymes: Further kinetic studies at high enzyme concentration" by Thomas Wuntsch, Raymond F. Chen, and Elliot S. Vesell [169, 480 (1970)], 14.0 mM NAD in line 2 of the heading of Table 1 should read 14.0 , microM NAD.     

On the Protection against Alloxan Diabetes by Hexoses

In the article "On the protection against alloxan diabetes by hexoses" by G. Bhattacharya in the 19 Nov. 1954 issue, page 842, the heading for the second column of Table 2 should read "Oxygen uptake (microlit O(2)/30 min)."     

Erratum

The levels enzyme activity given in Table 1 of the report, "Red Cell Glucose-6-Phosphate and 6-Phosphogluconic Dehydrogenases and Nucleoside Phosphorylase," by P. A. Marks [Science 127, 1338 (1958)] are incorrect by a factor of 10(3). All activity levels should read per 10(9), not 10(6), erythrocytes.     

Erratum

In the report "DNA amplification for direction detection of HIV-1 in DNA of peripheral blood mononuclear cells " Chin-Yih Ou et al. (15 Jan., p. 295), the fourth sentence of reference 21 (p. 297) should have read, "The PCR reaction mixture contained 1 microg of PBMC DNA, 100 pmol each of primers (Table 2), 200 microM each of four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, 10 microM tris-HC1, pH 8.3, 50 mM KC1, 2.5 mM MgCl(2), 0.01% gelatin and 0.6 unit of thermoresistant DNA polymerase of Thermus aquaticus."     

Erratum

Table 3 in the report "Latitudinal and longitudinal oscillations of cloud features on Neptune" by Lawrence A. Sromovsky (1 Nov., p. 684) contained errors. In column 4, the two values for inferred shear should have been -0.8 and -13.8 m/(s-deg), respectively. The corresponding text in column 1 on page 686 should have read, "the advection model is quantitatively upheld for the DS2 motions, but not for the short-period component of the GDS motions. They both agree on phase lags, although the GDS is not in good quantitative agreement on amplitudes. Relative to a smooth shear profile obtained from a simple polynomial fit to the observed wind speeds as a function of latitude (11), the shear derived from the advective model amplitude ratio is almost the same for DS2, but a ninth as large for the GDS."

In the report "Mutagenicity of fly ash particles in Paramecium" by J. Smith-Sonneborn et al. (9 Jan., p. 180), Tables 1 and 2 are printed incorrectly. Significance lines are missing from both tables and "uninduced" should read "induced" in the sixth, eighth, and ninth entries of the first column in Table 1. The tables are reprinted below as they should have appeared. Table 1. Mutagenic effect of fly ash and heat-treated fly ash in Paramecium. Values not connected by the same line are significantly different from each other (Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test, alpha = .05). The data from six experiments were pooled since the control values for autogamous progeny were not significantly different. Cerophyl is the ryegrass extract used for cultivation of Paramecium. Induced S-9 is the Ames liver microsome fraction from rats receiving Arochlor 1254 (polychlorinated biphenyl) to activate the enzymes for conversion of promutagens to mutagenic form; uninduced S-9 is from rats receiving corn oil only (the vehicle for the Arochlor). Glass beads (1 to 3 ,microm) suspended in either induced or uninduced S-9 were used as a negative control for nonnutritive particles. Kaolinite was also used in one experiment, and the results were the same as those for the glass beads. Benzo[a]pyrene was the positive control for mutagenicity requiring induced S-9. The initial concentration of suspended fly ash was 535 ,microg/ml. The average number of affected progeny from treated parent cells was 20 percent higher than the average number of affected control progeny. Since one mutation would theoretically yield only 4 affected progeny in 16 autogamous progeny from a treated parent cell (6), the percentages, though low, reflect significant damage. [See table in the PDF file] Table 2. Mutagenicity of heat-treated fly ash extracted with HCl or DMSO. Values not connected by the same line are significantly different from each other (pairwise comparisons of proportions, P < .05). The concentration of fly ash particles suspended in uninduced S-9 was 1068 ,ug/ml. The higher than usual value for mutagenicity in the controls can be attributed to the considerable age of the clone used here [micronuclear damage increases with age (12)]. PERMANENT MOUNTS OF VIRUS-INFECTED CHORIOALLANTOIC MEMBRANES

IN Table 2 of the article "Prevention of Tumor Growth (Carcinoma 2163) by Intravenous Injections of Yeast and Vitamins" (SCIENCE, July 18, 1941) the per cent. figures for non-takes should read: Yeast+ Riboflavin 62%, Yeast 21%, Riboflavin 14%, Yeast+ Thiamin 18%, Thiamin 3%.     

水稻白叶枯病菌和细菌性条斑病菌在不同培养基上的回收率测定

选用523培养基(523)、营养培养基(NA)和改良胁元培养基(WF—P)对水稻白叶枯病菌(B—3)和条斑病菌(A—1)的回收率测定结果表明,病原菌的回收率范围为12.3%～76.6%,其中A～1的平均回收率较高,达61.5%.B—3的平均回收率很低,仅为26.3%.同一菌株在不同培养基上的回收率亦存在明显差异,A—1在NA上的回收效果最佳,回收率达75.9%.在523和WF—P上较差;WF—P对B—3的回收率亦达46.1%,几乎是523和NA培养基的3倍.WF—P和NA可分别作为检测水稻白叶枯病菌和条斑病菌的基础培养基.     

Errare humanum est

In the erratum published in the issue of 13 February (p. 656), Tables 1 and 2 from the report "Mutagenicity of fly ash particles in Paramecium" by J. Smith-Sonneborn et al. (9 Jan., p. 180) were printed incorrectly. Significance lines missing in the original tables were also missing in the erratum. With determination, we again reprint the tables as they should have appeared (Table 1 above, Table 2 at right).     

水稻白叶枯病菌fkbM基因对其运动性的影响

[目的]研究水稻白叶枯病菌fkb M基因对其运动性的影响。[方法]采用同源置换方法对水稻白叶枯病菌野生型菌株PXO99A的fkbM基因进行基因敲除,构建突变菌株ΔfkbM_(Xoo),同时构建互补菌株ΔfkbM_(Xoo)(C)。通过运动性试验,确定fkbM基因对运动性的影响。[结果]与野生型菌株PXO99~A相比,ΔfkbM_(Xoo)突变体运动性明显减弱,而互补菌株ΔfkbM_(Xoo)(C)能基本恢复水稻白叶枯病菌的运动性。[结论]水稻白叶枯病菌fkbM基因突变能减弱水稻白叶枯病菌的运动能力。     

人工接种条件下植物病原细菌噬菌体来源的研究

对盆栽水稻采用针刺、喷雾、盆水等不同方法接种水稻细菌性条斑病菌后，检测稻株发病和盆水中的噬菌体，结果表明：未接种稻细条病菌的 处理中，无稻株发病，盆水中也未测到噬菌体；3种接种处理均可引致稻株发病，并先后在其盆水中检测到噬菌体，说明噬菌体与致病菌有密切的伴随关系。在采用叶面喷雾和盆水接种稻白叶枯自然组合菌株B－1和单细胞系菌株IV-16试验中，B－1处理后能引起稻株发病，且在盆水中测到噬菌体；而IV－16处理后虽引起稻株发病，但盆水中无噬菌体，结果表明；在人工接种条件下植物病原细菌噬菌体是由病菌中的溶原细菌传带而来的。     

Erratum

In the report "Cloud droplet deposition in subalpine balsam fir forests: Hydrological and chemical inputs" by G. M. Lovett et al. (24 Dec., p. 1303), two errors appeared in Table 2 on page 1304. The cloud deposition of SO(4)(2-), incorrectly reported as 275.8 kg ha(-1) year(-1), should have been 137.9 kg ha(-1) year(-1). The percentage of the sum contributed by clouds, reported as 81 for SO(4)(2-), should have been 68.     

蔬菜根际细菌R2–2的鉴定及其抑菌活性

从云南昆明市郊蔬菜根际分离细菌,经平板对峙培养筛选出1株抑菌能力较强的菌株R2-2,通过对其进行形态观察、Biolog微生物自动鉴定系鉴定和16S rDNA序列测定及其系统发育学分析,鉴定为甲基营养型芽孢杆菌(Bacillus methylotrophicus)。对R2-2与植物病原细菌(甘蓝黑腐病菌、魔芋细菌性软腐病菌、海棠斑点病菌、水稻白叶枯病菌、水稻细菌性条斑病菌)和病原真菌(疫霉菌、尖镰孢菌、茄镰孢菌、立枯丝核菌)进行对峙试验,结果显示,R2-2对水稻白叶枯病菌和水稻条斑病菌有较强的抑菌效果,抑菌圈直径分别达6.83 cm和7.03 cm。该菌株的16S rDNA序列已在GenBank中注册,登录号为JN648098。     

Erratum

In the report by H. Vasken Aposhian on "Protection by d-penicillamine against the lethal effects of mercuric chloride" [Science 128, 93 (11 July 1958)], the heading of the last column of Table 1 should have been "Percent," and not "Survival (%)." Mortality, and not survival, is given in this column.
