Cadmium (Cd) is a common impurity in phosphate fertilizers and application of phosphate fertilizer may contribute to soil Cd accumulation. Changes in Cd burdens to agricultural soils and the potential for plant Cd accumulation resulting from fertilizer input were investigated in this study. A field experiment was conducted on Haplaquept to investigate the influence of calcium superphosphate on extractable and total soil Cd and on growth and Cd uptake of different Komatsuna (Brassica rapa L. var. perviridis) cultivars. Four cultivars of Komatsuna were grown on the soil and harvested after 60 days. The superphosphate application increased total soil Cd from 2.51 to 2.75?mg?kg?1, 0.1?mol?L?1 hydrochloric acid (HCl) extractable Cd from 1.48 to 1.55?mg?kg?1, 0.01?mol?L?1 HCl extractable Cd from 0.043 to 0.046?mg?kg?1 and water extractable Cd from 0.0057 to 0.0077?mg?kg?1. Cd input reached 5.68?g?ha–1 at a rate of 240?kg?ha–1 superphosphate fertilizer application. Superphosphate affected dry-matter yield of leaves to different degrees in each cultivar. ‘Nakamachi’ produced the highest yield in 2008 and ‘Hamami No. 2’ in 2009. Compared with the control (no phosphate fertilizer), application of superphosphate at a rate of 240?kg?ha–1 increased the Cd concentration in dry leaves by 0.14?mg?kg?1 in ‘Maruha’, 1.03?mg?kg?1 in ‘Nakamachi’, 0.63?mg?kg?1 in ‘SC8-007’ in 2008, and by 0.19?mg?kg?1 in Maruha’, 0.17?mg?kg?1 in ‘Hamami No. 2’, while it decreased by 0.27?mg?kg?1 in ‘Nakamachi’ in 2009. Field experiments in two years demonstrated that applications of different levels of calcium superphosphate did not influence Cd concentration in soil and Komatsuna significantly. However, there was a significant difference in Cd concentration of fresh and dry Komatsuna leaves among four cultivars in 2008 and 2009. The highest Cd concentration was found in the ‘Nakamachi’ cultivar (2.14?mg?kg?1 in 2008 and 1.91?mg?kg?1 in 2009). The lowest Cd concentration was observed in the ‘Maruha’ cultivar (1.51?mg?kg?1?dry weight (DW)) in 2008 and in the ‘Hamami No. 2’ cultivar (1.56?mg?kg?1?DW) in 2009. A decreasing trend in Cd concentration was found in ‘Nakamachi’, followed by ‘SC8-007’, ‘Hamami No. 2’ and ‘Maruha’ successively. It is necessary to consider a low-uptake cultivar for growing in a Cd polluted soil. In these two years’ results, ‘Maruha’ cultivar was the lowest Cd uptake cultivar compared to the others.

Cadmium and Zn concentrations were determined on 21 commercial fertilizer samples by atomic absorption. The Cd concentration ranged from 1.5 to 9.7 mg kg?1, the median being 4.3 mg kg?1. Zinc showed a much wider range. The Cd added to soil by commercial fertilizers may be as much as 2150 kg annually in Wisconsin, compared to a potential of 1700 kg if wastewater sludges from all municipal sewage treatment plants in the state were disposed of on land. However, because of the higher application rates, sludge Cd on a soil concentration basis is a much more concentrated source of Cd than that from phosphate fertilizers.

Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three soluble zinc (Zn) fertilizers on cadmium (Cd) concentrations in two genotypes of maize (Zea mays): Jidan 209 and Changdan 374. Zinc fertilizers were added to soil at four levels: 0, 80, 160, and 240 mg kg?1 soil as nitrate [Zn(NO3)2], chloride (ZnCl2), and sulfate (ZnSO4). Cadmium nitrate [Cd(NO3)2] was added to all the treatments at a uniform rate equivalent to 10 mg kg?1 soil. The biomass of maize plants was increased with the application of three zinc fertilizers, of which Zn(NO3)2 yielded more than others. Under ZnCl2 treatment, plant growth was promoted at the lower level and depressed at the higher one. All the three fertilizers decreased Cd concentration in shoots in comparison with treatments without Zn, but there were variations with different forms, especially in plants treated with Zn(NO3)2, which had the minimal value. The orders of average Cd concentration in shoots with different zinc fertilizers were ZnSO4>ZnCl2>Zn(NO3)2 for Jidan 209 and ZnCl2>ZnSO4>Zn(NO3)2 for Changdan 374, respectively (P<0.001). There was no significant difference between ZnSO4 and ZnCl2 treatments. The lowest Cd concentration in shoots was found in the 80‐mg‐kg?1 soil or 160‐mg‐kg?1 soil treatment. Cadmium concentration in roots in the presence of ZnCl2 was the lowest and under ZnSO4 the highest. The mechanism involved needs to be studied to elucidate the characteristics of complexation of Cl? and SO4 2? with Cd in plants and their influence on transfer from roots to shoots.

Abstract

Sustainable food production includes mitigating environmental pollution and avoiding unnecessary use of non-renewable mineral phosphate resources. Efficient phosphorus (P) utilization from organic wastes is crucial for alternative P sources to be adopted as fertilizers. There must be predictable plant responses in terms of P uptake and plant growth. An 18-week pot experiment was conducted to assess corn (Zea mays L.) plant growth, P uptake, soil test P and P fractionation in response to application of organic P fertilizer versus inorganic P fertilizer in five soils. Fertilizers were applied at a single P rate using: mono-ammonium phosphate, anaerobically digested dairy manure, composted chicken manure, vegetable compost and a no-P control. Five soils used varied in soil texture and pH. Corn biomass and tissue P concentrations were different among P fertilizers in two soils (Warden and Quincy), with greater shoot biomass for composted chicken manure and higher tissue P concentration for MAP. Plant dry biomass ranged from highest to lowest with fertilizer treatment as follows: composted chicken manure?>?AD dairy?=?MAP?=?no-P control?=?vegetable compost. Soil test P was higher in soils with any P fertilizer treatment versus the no-P control. The loosely bound and soluble P (2.7?mg P kg?1) accounted for the smallest pool of inorganic P fractions, followed by iron bound P (13.7?mg P kg?1), aluminum bound P (43.4?mg P kg?1) and reductant soluble P (67.9?mg P kg?1) while calcium bound P (584.6?mg P kg?1) represented the largest pool of inorganic P.

This study was carried out to clarify the effects of soil nitrate before cultivation and amounts of basal-dressed nitrogen on additional N application rate and yields of semi-forced tomato for three years from 1998 to 2000. The amounts and timing of additional N dressing were determined based on diagnosis of petiole sap nitrate. The top-dressing was carried out with a liquid fertilizer when the nitrate concentration of a leaflet's petiole sap of leaf beneath fruit which is 2–4 cm declined below 2000 mg L?1.

For standard yield by the method of fertilizer application based on this condition, no basal-dressed nitrogen was required when soil nitrate before cultivation was 150 mg kg?1 dry soil or higher in the 0–30 cm layer; 38 kg ha?1 of basal-dressed nitrogen, which corresponds to 25% of the standard rate of fertilizer application of Chiba Prefecture, was optimum when soil nitrate before cultivation was 100150 mg kg?1 dry soil; 75 kg ha?1 of basal-dressed nitrogen, which corresponds to 50% of the standard, was optimum when soil nitrate before cultivation was under 100 mg kg?1 dry soil. A standard yield was secured and the rate of nitrogen fertilizer application decreased by 49–76% of the standard by keeping the nitrate concentration of tomato petiole sap between 1000–2000 mg L?1 from early harvest time to topping time under these conditions.

Arsenic (As) poisoning of groundwater in Bangladesh has become a major environmental and health issue. The extensive use of groundwater in irrigation of rice has resulted in elevated As in soils and crops. A study was undertaken to determine As concentrations in groundwater, soils, and crops in 16 districts of southwestern Bangladesh. Groundwater samples were collected from shallow-tube and hand-tube wells (STW and HTW) used for irrigation and drinking water. Soil and rice plants were sampled from the command area of the tube wells. Arsenic concentrations were determined using an atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with flow injection hydride generator. Groundwater samples contained <10 to 552 μg As L?1. Arsenic concentrations in 59% of STW samples exceeded 50 μg As L?1, the national standard for As in drinking water. Unlike groundwater, most of the surface water samples contained <10 μg As L?1. Concentrations of As in the soils from the command area of the tube wells ranged from 4.5 to 68 mg kg?1. More than 85% of the soils contained <20 mg As kg?1. The mean As concentration in the rice grain samples was 0.23 mg kg?1, which is much less than the maximum food hygiene standard. A positive relationship was observed between groundwater and soil As, implying that soil As level increases as a result of irrigation with contaminated water. However, irrigation water As did not show any relation with rice grain As. The findings suggest that surface water bodies are a safe source of irrigation water in the As-contaminated areas.

Agricultural, urban, forest and groundwater protection areas as well as nitrate and chloride concentrations are documented in maps. Areal distribution shows regionally elevated nitrate and chloride concentrations in connection with urban areas and agricultural use. Transport of nitrate and chloride tends to be conservative in the groundwater of the investigated area. Therefore, the elevated concentrations of these anions are suitable as indicators of anthropogenic impact on the groundwater. The average concentration of nitrate and chloride from all surveyed wells amounts to 26 and 17 mg L?1, respectively. It is shown that wells recharged through forests have lower nitrate and chloride concentrations (average: 21 and 13 mg L?1, respectively). Wells affected by waste deposits have an average nitrate concentration of 35 mg L?1 and chloride concentration of 24 mg L?1. Urban use results in an average value of 28 mg L?1 nitrate and 24 mg L?1 chloride. As nitrate and chloride concentrations are stable with respect to the depth of the groundwater table, degradation processes or other protective effects of the unsaturated zone can be omitted.

Abstract

A proportion of the nitrogen (N) applied to grasslands as organic or inorganic fertilizers can be lost to water courses as nitrate and to the atmosphere as nitrous and nitric oxides. Volcanic soils from Chile are not generally prone to leaching, possibly due to net immobilization of nitrate and/or ammonium, and/or due to inhibition of nitrification by either chemical or physical processes. In laboratory studies we found large mineralization potentials in soils from three different Chilean soils after 17 weeks of incubation, totalling 215 and 254 mg kg?1 dry soil for two Andisols and 127 mg kg?1 dry soil in an Ultisol. Nitrification occurred after a short period, and was lowest in the Ultisol. In addition, microbial analysis showed nitrifiers to be present in all three soils. Adsorption of ammonium was two-fold stronger than for nitrate, ranging from 29 to 180 kg N ha?1. The highest potential for N adsorption in the 0–60 cm soil profile was with the Ultisol (398 kg N ha?1), but was similar in both Andisols (193 and 172 kg N ha?1, respectively). The combination of ammonium retention together with delayed nitrification could account for the low leaching rates in these soils.

Leaching of Nitrates under agricultural crops in the protected area of the waterworks Mussum Leaching of nitrates was measured within the protected area of the waterworks in Mussum near Bocholt, which had to be closed for some weeks in 1970 because of the excessive nitrate concentration of ground water. The nitrate output of the prevailing sandy soils has been determined at 10 stations since 1974 by weekly measurements of water flow and nitrate concentration of the seepage below the roots, both under normally fertilized fields and pasture and under heavily fertilized vegetables (up to 660 kg · ha?1 · y?1 N). Water percolation and thus nitrate output is almost exclusively restricted to winter, beginning in November. The nitrate concentration of seepage amounted to (a) 170-520, (b) 80-100, and (c) 40-80 mg · I?1 under (a) vegetables, (b) cereals, and (c) pasture, whereas the loss of nitrogen (N) reached values of (a) 120-350, (b) 55-70, and (c) 30-55 kg · ha?1 · y?1 respectively. The nitrate concentration under formerly heavily fertilized areas decreased to 35 mg · I?1 NO, in summer 1978 after the last application of fertilizers in spring 1977, whereas the nitrate concentration remained at 300 mg. I?1 NO, in summer 1978 after the last application of fertilizers in spring 1977, whereas the nitrate concentration remained at 300 mg · I?1 NO3 further on. The investigations prove a strong relationship between N-fertilizing and leaching of nitrates. Finally the restrictions on the land management of the legally protected area of the waterworks are reported.

Abstract

Water extraction of trace elements can simulate the concentration of elements in the soil solution from where the plant takes up the elements. The objective of this investigation was to determine the water extractable concentration of seven trace elements (Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Mo, Pb and Cd) and to assess their relationship with soil properties of the Danube basin in Croatia. Soil samples from the surface layer (0–25 cm) of 74 sites, having different land uses (forest and agricultural land), were collected. Samples were analysed for total and water extractable trace elements as well as for pH, DOC, SOC and CEC. The concentrations of water extractable fraction of trace elements were on average: 20.14 mg kg?1 for Fe, 3.61 mg kg?1 for Mn, 0.07 mg kg?1 for Ni, 0.016 mg kg?1 for Co, 0.01 mg kg?1 for Mo, 0.01 mg kg?1 for Pb and 0.0009 mg kg?1 for Cd. Soil properties were in the following range: pH 4.3–8 (Avg: 6.35), DOC 6.1–73 mg l?1 (Avg: 26 mg l?1), CEC 1.3–24 cmol kg?1 (Avg: 9 cmol kg?1) and SOC 0.5–5% (Avg: 1.7%). The concentration of water extractable fraction of trace elements was significantly correlated with pH (p <0.001), DOC (p <0.001 – p <0.05) and CEC (p <0.001) but their relationship with total content of trace element and SOC was rather weak, suggesting that total metal alone cannot be an indicator of toxicity or deficiency. Results show that pH, DOC and CEC are important soil quality parameters taking part in the solubility control of trace metals in the soil rather than their total concentration. The difference between land uses has been observed as well, suggesting that a change in land use can cause a change in trace element solubility.

Nitrate leaching from intermittently flooded rice fields contributes to nitrate pollution in groundwater. In this study, redox conditions and nitrate change in a newly flooded rice soil under the influence of oxidative iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were investigated using flooded soil columns under moderate percolation (4.2?mm?d?1). The amendments of α-Fe2O3 and β-MnO2 powder (5 and 2.7?mg?g?1, respectively) delayed the establishment of reducing conditions and lowered the rate of nitrate removal in the soil column, and subsequently increased the percolation of soil indigenous nitrate (8.3?mg nitrogen [N]?kg?1) from 2.0% to 8.0%, and the percolation of externally amended nitrate (250?mg?N?kg?1) from 11.0% to 26.0%. The pool of oxidative iron-centered metal oxidants needs to be jointly considered with the availability of organic carbon and hydrological conditions in evaluating redox conditions and nitrate change in intermittently flooded rice soils.

Agrichemical spills and discharges to soil can cause point-source contamination of surface and ground waters. When high contaminant concentrations inhibit natural attenuation in soils, chemical treatments can be used to promote degradation and allow application of treated soils to agricultural lands. This approach was used to remediate soil containing >650 mg atrazine, >170 mg metolachlor and >18,000 mg nitrate kg?1. Results indicated a decrease in metolachlor concentration to <1 mg kg?1 within 95 days of chemical treatment with zerovalent iron (Fe0, 5% w/w) and aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3, 2% w/w) but after one year >150 mg atrazine and >7000 mg nitrate kg?1 remained. Laboratory experiments confirmed that subsequent additions of sucrose (table sugar) to the chemically pretreated soil promoted further reductions in atrazine and nitrate concentrations. Field-scale results showed that adding 5% (w/w) sucrose to windrowed and pretreated soil significantly reduced atrazine (<38 mg kg?1) and nitrate (<2,100 mg kg?1) concentrations and allowed for land application of the treated soil. These results provide evidence that zerovalent iron in combination with Al2(SO4)3 and sucrose can be used for on-site, field-scale treatment of pesticide- and nitrate-contaminated soil.

This study evaluated the petiole uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur (N, P, K, and S) by the potato from two seed meals, mint compost, and five commercially available organic fertilizers under an irrigated certified organic production system. Available soil nitrate (NO3-N) and ammonium (NH4-N) from each amendment averaged 115 kg N ha?1 at application and 25 kg N ha?1 30 d after planting through harvest, with minor differences between fertilizers. Petiole N declined from an average of 25,000 mg N kg?1, 4 wk after emergence to 3,000 mg N kg?1 prior to harvest. Petiole P and K concentrations were maintained above 4,000 mg P kg?1, 10,000 mg K kg?1, and 2,000 mg S kg?1 tissue, respectively, throughout the growing season in all treatments. Tuber yields were not different between fertilized treatments averaging 53 Mg ha?1. This study provides organic potato growers baseline information on the performance of a diverse array of organic fertilizers and amendments.

A pot experiment was done to study the effect of zinc (Zn) application on the reproductive development and quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. SP 343) seeds. The soil was low in diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA)–extractable Zn and was fortified with a mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) as basal fertilizers. Four treatments included a control (no Zn), 5 mg Zn, 10 mg Zn, and 10 mg Zn kg?1 soil with urea instead of ammonium nitrate. Zinc addition improved the pollen-producing capacity of anthers, pollen viability, and seed yield with an increase in seed Zn, phytate, and starch contents but decreased the phytate/zinc molar ratio at 5 mg Zn kg?1 and increased it at 10 mg Zn kg?1. Application of urea increased the seed protein content at 10 mg Zn kg?1 but was ineffective in lowering the phytate/Zn ratio, which was still less than the alarming level.

A pot trial with acid yellow-brown soil was conducted to investigate the effects of molybdenum (Mo) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers on cold resistances of winter wheat. Molybdenum was applied at two rates (0 and 0.15 mg Mo kg?1 soil) and P at four rates [0, 100, 200, and 300 mg phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) kg?1 soil] in experiment 1. Both Mo and P fertilizers were applied at two rates (0 and 0.15 mg Mo kg?1 soil; 0, 150 mg P2O5 kg?1 soil) in experiment 2. Seed yield, soluble sugar, water-soluble protein, ascorbic acid (AsA), malondialdehyde (MDA), and abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations were studied. The results indicated that Mo and P fertilizer increased seed yield, soluble sugar, water-soluble protein, and AsA but decreased the MDA. It implied that appropriate Mo applied with P application had beneficial effects on increasing seed yield and enhancing the cold resistance ability through changing biological substances concentration in winter wheat.

Manganese (Mn) release in 18 soil–water suspensions after their equilibration for 24 and 240 h periods at 25°C was studied in a laboratory experiment. Total dissolved Mn released into the soil solution was observed to increase from a range of 0.03–0.41 mg L?1 (mean = 0.13 mg L?1) to a range of 0.45–44.44 mg L?1 (mean = 22.40 mg L?1) with the increase in incubation periods from 24 to 240 h, respectively. The increase in Mn released was observed to be related with the redox potential (pe) induced by incubation conditions. After 24 h of equilibration period, pe of soil–water suspension ranged from ?1.75 to 0.77 (mean = ?0.24). Increasing the incubation period to 240 h, pe of soil–water suspensions declined in the range of ?4.49 to ?2.74 (mean = ?3.29). Laboratory results of redox pe and corresponding dissolved manganese concentrations of some soil–water equilibrated systems were compared with the leaf Mn content in wheat and rice plants grown in the fields, from where soil samples were collected for laboratory experiment. These results demonstrated that decline in pe due to longer equilibration period (240 h) of soil–water systems in the laboratory experiment or keeping standing water for a couple of weeks in the fields for cultivation of rice crop results in higher release of Mn and eventually its higher uptake in rice than in wheat plants. Leaf manganese content in rice ranged from 94 to 185 mg kg?1, which was markedly higher than its range from 25 to 62 mg kg?1 found in the wheat grown at 10 different sites. Pourbaix diagrams were drawn for different soil–water systems containing carbonate, phosphate, or sulfate along with manganese. The presence of carbonate and phosphate anions along with manganese oxides minerals in the soil–water systems of all soils results in its precipitation as MnCO3 and MnHPO4, respectively, in both oxidized and reduced soil field environment. In Punjab, wheat and rice crops are generally cultivated on soils heavily fertilized with P fertilizers. The presence of phosphate anion with manganese oxides minerals in the soil–water systems of all soils results in the precipitation MnHPO4 in both oxidized and reduced soil field environment. Thus, in P-fertilized soil, MnHPO4 compound is even more predominant than aqueous Mn2+ and its solubility actually controlled the availability of Mn2+ to plants.

A pot experiment was conducted in a glass house on low nickel containing alluvial soil in the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, during 2012–13 and 2013–14, to study the response of barley to soil application of nickel (Ni). There were ten treatments of Ni (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mg kg?1) studied with recommended dose of fertilizers nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur (N:P:K:S :: 40:30:30:20 mg kg?1).The results showed a significant increase in plant height, number of tillers, chlorophyll content, straw and grain yield, and 1,000 grains weight with application of 10 mg Ni kg?1 soil during both years of study. The micronutrient concentration and uptake in straw and grain increased with application of <15 mg Ni kg?1 soil and beyond that declined significantly. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-extractable micronutrient iron, manganese, copper, zinc and nickel (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Ni) content in soil increased with increasing level of Ni. The maximum urease activity in post-harvest soil was noticed with application of 40 mg Ni kg?1 soil. The microbial population viz. bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes were higher with 5, 30 and 10 mg Ni kg?1 soil, respectively.

The objective was to estimate the potential risk of N leaching into the groundwater under various types of agriculture by using lysimeter experiments on the nitrogen(N)‐cycle of various soil types. Results were obtained with 12 weighable, monolithic lysimeters with a surface area of 1 m2, a total depth of 3 m, and free drainage. Mean annual N‐leaching losses of 5 to 44 kg ha—1 and nitrate concentrations of the seepage water (leachate) between 80 and 200 mg l—1 were measured during the period of intensive agricultural use. On fallow land with a well‐established grass vegetation, some nitrate was removed by the plants. As a result, the nitrate concentrations in the leachate were reduced significantly. Ecological farming measures generally reduced N leaching losses and kept the N‐concentration in the leachate below the German threshold value for drinking water with 50 mg l—1 nitrate. However, ploughing in of clover or leguminous vegetation and the application of farmyard manure in autumn caused the nitrate concentration in the leachate to rise significantly above the mentioned threshold value.<?show $6#>  相似文献
