The skeletons of phaeodarian Radiolaria transport and redistribute silica to the tropical deep oceans by dissolving in the water column and on the sea floor. The skeletons are initially solid but within a few days to months become progressively more porous while settling through the water column. Phaeodarian Radiolaria are rarely preserved in the bottom sediments; in contrast, polycystine Radiolaria are the dominant Radiolaria preserved in the fossil record. This preservational difference may be due to differences in skeletal constituents. 相似文献

An unresolved issue in ocean science is the discrepancy between the food requirements of the animals living on the deep sea floor and their food supply, as measured by sediment traps. A 10-year time-series study of the water column off Monterey Bay, California, revealed that the discarded mucus feeding structures of giant larvaceans carry a substantial portion of the upper ocean's productivity to the deep seabed. These abundant, rapidly sinking, carbon-rich vectors are not detected by conventional sampling methods and thus have not been included in calculations of vertical nutrient flux or in oceanic carbon budgets. 相似文献

Deep-ocean carbonate ion concentrations ([CO(3)(2-)]) and carbon isotopic ratios (δ(13)C) place important constraints on past redistributions of carbon in the ocean-land-atmosphere system and hence provide clues to the causes of atmospheric CO(2) concentration changes. However, existing deep-sea [CO(3)(2-)] reconstructions conflict with one another, complicating paleoceanographic interpretations. Here, we present deep-sea [CO(3)(2-)] for five cores from the three major oceans quantified using benthic foraminiferal boron/calcium ratios since the last glacial period. Combined benthic δ(13)C and [CO(3)(2-)] results indicate that deep-sea-released CO(2) during the early deglacial period (17.5 to 14.5 thousand years ago) was preferentially stored in the atmosphere, whereas during the late deglacial period (14 to 10 thousand years ago), besides contributing to the contemporary atmospheric CO(2) rise, a substantial portion of CO(2) released from oceans was absorbed by the terrestrial biosphere. 相似文献

Observations in situ confirm the swimming and feeding behavior in previously unreported dense assemblages of the holothurian Peniagone diaphana, at a depth of 2000 meters, off southern California. Proximate analysis of captured specimens indicates that this organism may represent a numerically significant, but low organic content member of many near-bottom deep-sea communities. 相似文献

The high-magnesian calcite fraction of a shallow-water carbonate sand was converted to low-magnesian calcite after transport to the deep sea; strontium was also leached from the carbonate. Oxygen isotopic ratios indicate that loss of magnesium and strontium took place during recrystallization of the carbonate in the deep sea; this process did not alter textures of skeletal fragments. Methane concentrations as great as 30,000 nanoliters per liter were measured on two cruises in the northwest Caribbean Sea. Such concentrations are three orders of magnitude higher than Bunsen solubilities would predict. Although shallow maxima may result from in situ microbial activity, the deeper maxima appear to result from massive seepage (estimated at 1 x 10(8) to 10 x 10(8) liters per day) along the Jamaica Ridge. 相似文献

Iron-rich sediments chemically similar to those forming at present on the crest of the East Pacific Rise have been found just above basement at widely separated drill sites in the eastern equatorial Pacific, including three sites of Leg 16 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. A new fossil site near Gilboa, New York, is one of only three where fossils of terrestrial arthropods of Devonian age have been found. The new Gilboan fauna is younger than the other two but richer in taxa. Fragmentary remains and nearly whole specimens assigned to Eurypterida, Arachnida (Trigonotarbida, Araneae, Amblypygi, and Acari), Chilopoda [Craterostigmatomorpha(?) and Scuterigeromorpha(?)], and tentatively to Insecta (Archaeognatha) have been found. The centipedes and possible insects may represent the earliest records known for these groups. 相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal faunas in a piston core from 3331 meters at 44 degrees N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge show striking variations in the relative abundance of species. Uvigerina peregrina, which is broadly distributed today in the South Atlantic and in the Pacific in water that has been long isolated from the surface, is absent in the North and Equatorial Atlantic at depths occupied by highly oxygenated North Atlantic deep water. This species dominated the fauna at this site for much of the past 150,000 years. It is suggested that North Atlantic deepwater production was much reduced or eliminated at times of Uvigerina peregrina abundance, as a result of cooling and stratification of the Norwegian Sea surface, coincident with the times of the southward migration of the polar front in the North Atlantic. 相似文献

Indurated carbonate samples, obtained from the North Atlantic sea floor with a deep-sea drill coring apparatus, suggest that the phenomenon of deep-sea carbonate lithification is more complex than had been thought previously. Lithified-nonlithified couplets can now be related in age and orientation. Age determinations based on the method of carbon-14 dating show that adjacent nonlithified-lithified layers may differ in age by more than 30,000 years. 相似文献

Drums containing chemical wastes have been found in and along the North Sea. The wastes were analyzed and were found to include lower chlorinated aliphatic compounds, vinyl esters, chlorinated aromatic amines and nitrocompounds, and the insecticide endosulfan. Because dropping these drums into the sea endangers the environment and results in damage to fishing operations, measures should be taken to stop this practice. 相似文献

The concentration of airborne soil dust at Enewetak Atoll(11 degrees N, 162 degrees E) in April 1979 was 2.3 micrograms per cubic meter but decreased steadily to 0.02 microgram per cubic meter over the next 5 months. The spring dust is probably derived from China; its deposition rate ( approximately 0.3 millimeter per 1000 years) suggests that it may be a significant contributor to the deep-sea sediments of the North Pacific. 相似文献
