OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a reusable plastic model mimicking the anatomy and hemodynamics of the canine female genital tract for teaching basic surgical skills and ovariohysterectomy. SAMPLE POPULATION: 40 veterinary students of the class of 1998. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: Students'confidence level and experience in private practice was evaluated via questionnaire before training. Students in 2 groups performed an ovariohysterectomy on cadavers (group C, n = 20) or on the model (Group M, n = 20) for 2 hours. Students' psychomotor and basic surgical skills were objectively assessed by the following tests: ligation of a foam cylinder, passing a needle through the eyelets of an electronic suture board, and ligating latex tubing. Results were compared before and after training and within and between groups. The ability of students to perform an ovariohysterectomy in a live dog after training was compared between groups with a scoring system. RESULTS: Students in both groups had similar surgical experience and basic skills before training. The results of the psychomotor and basic surgical skills tests were better in group M after training than group C. The improvement of each student in performing these tasks also increased when students were trained with the model. Scores assigned to students performing an ovariohysterectomy in a live dog were higher in group M (31.45 +/- 1.15) than in group C (20.7 +/- 1.42). CONCLUSION: The model was more effective than cadavers in teaching basic surgical skills and ovariohysterectomy in dogs.  相似文献

The clinical, anaesthetic and surgical records of 142 bitches admitted into the primary care clinic at the Small Animal Hospital, University of Liverpool, between January 2002 and August 2004 for routine ovariohysterectomy by final-year students were analysed for complications during and after the surgery. The time taken to perform the surgical procedure was recorded, to allow assessment of the time involved in one-to-one surgical teaching during live-recovery surgeries of client-owned pets. The types of complications were similar to those reported in earlier studies: nine bitches suffered haemorrhage of the ovarian arteries during surgery, and there were four cases of haemorrhage after surgery, 12 cases of wound inflammation and four other types of complication. The rates of intraoperative, postoperative and total complications were 6.3, 14.1 and 20.6 per cent, respectively.  相似文献

The rationale of incorporating behavioral medicine into veterinary practice is that it can expand the range of medical services offered, help obtain happier, more acceptable pets, and lead to longer pet ownership. In doing so, veterinarians should be able to increase their business both through an actual increase in pet ownership and retention and through increased services for individual pets. The range of services offered can differ from practice to practice but may include preventive, interventive, and ancillary services, as with other areas in contemporary veterinary medical practice. Each area of behavioral practice can be an economically feasible addition to veterinary practice from the perspective of medical services rendered, as a method of practice promotion, or as an area of public service. The choice depends on the level of competence of the practitioner, the practice philosophy, and the need for the services in a given service area.  相似文献

A Web site was created for the small animal problem-solving elective at Virginia Tech. In addition to signalment, history, physical examination findings, and results of routine laboratory tests, students were able to view images of cytologic and histologic specimens, radiographs, and endoscopic findings and hear examples of breath and cardiac sounds. Students commented that the availability of Web-based case materials allowed them increased opportunities to practice problem-solving skills.  相似文献

Leadership skills are important for many facets of professional life, but no known leadership training programs exist in North American veterinary schools. It was the purpose of this project to develop, deliver, and evaluate a leadership program for first-year veterinary students. Leadership attributes emphasized in the course included effective communication, openness to learning from others, self-awareness, commitment beyond self-interest, motivation, decision making, understanding issue complexity, and team building. The five-day course was delivered to 21 new veterinary students randomly selected just prior to their first-year orientation in the fall of 2000. Participants ranked themselves higher than non-participants in a post-course evaluation on their ability to be effective leaders. Participants reported an increase in self-confidence and a clearer understanding of their leadership roles. Participants also noted new support systems among co-participants and expressed a new ability to consider complex issues more broadly. Most reported that they frequently used enhanced skills in giving and receiving feedback and team building. Other leadership tools identified as valuable included negotiation, group dynamics, a structured approach to problem solving, time management, and an awareness of personal learning style preferences as a means to improve communication.  相似文献

A multimedia program, a non-linear system which supplements the traditional, linear way of learning (e.g. with a text book), was developed. Non-linear systems allow the direct use of information in a free sequence. A problem of these systems is the danger that the reader becomes lost in detail. Therefore, a program was constructed which tries to combine the properties of linear and non-linear teaching systems. Student groups were continuously involved during all stages of the project. The program is organized in several levels. These are: (1) choice of chapters; (2) table of contents of one chapter; (3) summary; (4) text and (5) pictures, animations, simulations and video sequences. The program can be used in different ways. In the linear mode, the reader selects via action words different levels of the program. The user can read either only on the level of the summaries or on detailed information (text, pictures, simulations and videos). In the non-linear mode the user jumps via menu items or buttons to selected pictures, simulations or a searched term. In this way, more than 3500 screen pages are integrated into a multimedia program for veterinary physiology. The program is written in TOOLBOOK, and can be used on a personal computer with Windows 95 or higher.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority's (APVMA) Adverse Experience Reporting Program for veterinary medicines (AERP Vet). It outlines the history of the AERP Vet and how the program investigates adverse experience reports received from veterinarians, product registrants and members of the public. The benefits to veterinarians of such a program are highlighted and include the ability to trust in the safety, quality and efficacy of the veterinary drugs that they handle and administer daily.  相似文献

The discipline of laboratory animal medicine is one of the most rapidly expanding specialties within the veterinary profession. Veterinary schools should fully accept the responsibility for introductory instruction in laboratory animal medicine in the professional curriculum. Such instruction should articulate the varied opportunities that exist for the laboratory animal veterinarian within the biomedical research community, and provide an overview of the normal biological characteristics and pathologic conditions of the common laboratory animal species. In addition, the opportunity should exist within the veterinary school for graduate and undergraduate students utilizing experimental animals to receive a comprehensive introduction to laboratory animal biology, care, and management. Instructional responsibility for such courses should be accepted by faculty veterinarians with advanced training in laboratory animal medicine. Veterinarians with advanced training in this specialty are uniquely qualified to make substantial contributions to biomedical research by promoting the health and welfare of the research animal.  相似文献

Tuberculosis is an important disease among many zoonoses, because both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis, which are the major causes of tuberculosis, are highly pathogenic, infect many animal species and thus are likely to be the source of infection in humans. In particular, monkeys are highly susceptible to these bacteria and are important spreaders. Recently, two outbreaks of M. tuberculosis occurred in four different kinds of monkeys and humans were also infected with the disease in Japan. In zoos, tuberculosis was reported not only in monkeys, but also in several different kinds of animals, including elephants. Pets such as dogs and cats are believed to be generally less susceptible to M. tuberculosis, but in this article we introduce a case of infection from man to dog by close contact. Japan is one of the few countries that have been able to control M. bovis infection. In other countries, however, cases of bovine tuberculosis and human M. bovis infection have been reported, and thus further attention is still required in the future.  相似文献
