CASE HISTORY: A skeletal disease characterised by lameness, limb deformities and reduced growth rate occurred over two successive years in lambs born on a commercial sheep farm in Marlborough. A genetic aetiology was considered likely following exclusion of other known causes of rickets and because of the progressive nature of the disease, even after affected animals were transferred to another property. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Affected lambs appeared normal at birth but developed clinical signs during the first 2 months of life. The most severely affected animals either died or were euthanised within the first year of life, but some survived to breeding age. Serum biochemistry revealed hypocalcaemia, hypophosphataemia and increased concentrations of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D. The mean serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D concentration was similar to that of control lambs. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Gross lesions included enlarged costochondral junctions, bilateral irregularity of articular surfaces on humeral heads due to collapse of subchondral bone, thickened cortices in long bones and irregular thickening of physeal cartilages. Microscopically, tongues of hypertrophic chondrocytes extended from physes into metaphyseal regions; metaphyseal trabeculae were thick, disorganised and often lined by wide osteoid seams. Osteoclastic activity was excessive both in cortical and trabecular bone. DIAGNOSIS: Inherited rickets in Corriedale sheep. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AND CONCLUSIONS: This disease is likely to be present in several Corriedale sheep flocks in New Zealand and may have been misdiagnosed as arthritis or other diseases causing lameness and/or poor growth. A defect in end-organ responsiveness to 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D is the likely mechanism. This disease of sheep may be a useful model for studying vitamin D metabolism and the treatment of inherited forms of rickets in human beings.  相似文献

A suspected inherited form of rickets was diagnosed in Corriedale sheep on a commercial sheep farm in Marlborough. Affected lambs were normal at birth but showed a reduced growth rate and a range of skeletal abnormalities, including both varus and valgus deformities and a characteristic dip in the shoulder region. Up to 20 affected lambs had been born on the property over the last two seasons. Skeletal lesions in affected lambs included swollen costochondral junctions, moderate to marked thickening of physes in long bones, and collapse of weakened subchondral bone, particularly in the proximal humerus. These lesions, together with the microscopic changes, strongly suggested a diagnosis of rickets. Affected lambs were hypocalcaemic and hypophosphataemic, consistent with a deficiency of vitamin D.

Vitamin D assays revealed significantly higher 1,25(OH) vitamin D concentrations in affected lambs than in controls, suggesting a defect in the vitamin D receptor as the likely mechanism. DNA testing revealed that 4/10 Corriedale rams used during the previous season had sired affected lambs. Studies aimed at confirming the genetic nature of the disease and the mechanism are continuing at Massey University.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine if sward height grazed by ewes in mid- to late-pregnancy affects subsequent indices of colostrum intake by twin and triplet lambs, and the extent of the variation in colostrum intake between twin and triplet litter-mates.

METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 75 twin and 46 triplet litters, respectively, 24–36 h after birth. Samples were not collected from lambs that died before this age. Lambs were born to ewes which had grazed one of four sward heights (2, 4, 6 and 8 cm) during mid- to late-pregnancy. Serum samples were analysed for gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activities and glucose concentrations. The number of lambs present at weaning was used to determine lamb survival rate.

RESULTS: GGT activities of lambs born to ewes that grazed swards 2 cm high were lower than those born to ewes that grazed swards 4 and 6 cm high (p=0.053 and p=0.037, respectively). Glucose concentrations were higher in twin than triplet lambs (p=0.003) and in lambs born to ewes grazed on swards 6 cm high than those born to ewes grazed on swards 2 cm high (p=0.033). These differences were not evident after correction for differences in birthweight. There was significant (p<0.001) variation within litter-mates for GGT activities and glucose concentrations in both twins and triplets. The blood constituent status of lambs that died before the 24–36 h collection period is not known. However, lambs which died after this period had significantly lower GGT activities (p=0.009) and glucose (p=0.010) concentrations at the time of sampling than those which survived.

CONCLUSIONS: Farmers should ensure twin- and tripletbearing ewes in mid- to late-pregnancy are grazing at least 4 cm of herbage to ensure colostrum intake of lambs in the postpartum period is not adversely affected.  相似文献

The pre-weaning production of ewes and lambs in spring on pastures grazed during the previous autumn and early winter by either weaner sheep, adult sheep, or cattle was investigated together with estimating the benefits of pre- and post-lambing drenches to ewes. These treatments were compared with one in which parasitism was uncontrolled in ewes lambing on pastures grazed previously by untreated weaner sheep, and another where parasitism was suppressed by 2-weekly drenching of the weaner sheep and also of the ewes and their lambs. Prior grazing by cattle effectively eliminated infection of pastures with intestinal Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus spp, but less so for Ostertagia spp. Worthwhile reductions in contamination were also achieved by grazing by adult sheep compared with grazing by undrenched weaners. Despite differences in the parasitological status of the pastures, there were no indications that pre-weaning growth rates of lambs were affected. However, wool growth in ewes was reduced by 10 to 20% by parasite infection. Wool growth of ewes on pastures grazed by cattle during the pre-experimental period exceeded that on any other treatment, and was significantly greater than that of ewes on pastures grazed by undrenched weaners. There was no production benefit in giving a pre-lambing drench to ewes on plots contaminated by weaners, or in giving the additional post-lambing drench to ewes grazing on plots contaminated by weaners, adult sheep or cattle.  相似文献

Lambs from ewes grazed without cattle at 4.9, 7.4 and 9.9 ewes and lambs per hectare and from ewes run with steers at an equivalent median stocking rate at four ratios in which sheep comprised 30%, 40%, 50% and 70% of the animal equivalents were killed and examined for worms. When sheep grazed alone, there was no significant increase in the number of worm species normally found in sheep, namely Ostertagia circumcincta and Nematodirus spathiger, with an increase in stocking rate. When sheep grazed with cattle, there was a decrease in the number of worm species normally found in sheep but an increase in the number of those normally found in cattle, namely Cooperia oncophora and Trichostrongylus axei, as the proportion of cattle in the ratio increased. The total worm burdens were low due to the management of the flock and parasites were not shown to have affected productivity. The results are discussed and the practical aspects of the findings are presented.  相似文献

The fluctuation of populations of Dictyocaulus filaria in sheep was studied under field conditions in which animals are housed during the winter and grazed from late spring to autumn. A comparison was made between residual pasture contamination with overwintered larvae, the fecal larval deposition by ewes from June and both of these factors combined as sources of infection for spring born lambs. Ewes and lambs were killed serially over a year and worms were recovered from the lungs and counted. It was found that during the stabling period most of the ewes were carrying moderate numbers of D. filaria. However, while the vast majority of lungworm populations in the winter was inhibited in development at the early fifth larval stage, virtually all worms in the spring were adults. Any one source of infection studied contributed to the acquisition of important burdens of D. filaria by lambs as well as ewes. Worm counts reached peak in all lambs by November and this pointed to only one important Dictyocaulus generation per grazing season. It would also appear that larvae picked up by ewes and lambs as the grazing season advanced had become inhibited in development with the inhibition rate being most marked in autumn.  相似文献

The control of sheep nematode parasites in extensive mountain/transhumant management systems using the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans was assessed in this study. Two groups of Churra Tensina ewes were allowed to graze for 8 weeks in autumn on two separate paddocks of infected pasture near their winter sheds in the valley. At lambing, ewes and their twin lambs were turned out into the same paddocks for the following 12 weeks. One group of ewes received a daily dose of 5 x 10(5) chlamydospores of Duddingtonia flagrans/kg live weight per day both in autumn and in spring, while the other group was used as a non-treated control. Daily dosing of grazing ewes with the fungus D. flagrans had a clear effect on reducing autumn pasture contamination. This had a subsequent effect on the over-wintering larvae population that was confirmed by a 20% lower worm burden of tracer lambs kept in early spring on the paddock previously grazed by fungus treated ewes. In spring, pasture contamination was also significantly reduced in the paddock grazed by fungi-treated ewes and their lambs showed a 61% lower worm burden and a better performance than the control lambs. Results herein show that fungal spores fed to sheep at critical times with regard to the epidemiology of parasite infection, can have a significant effect on the infective larvae present on pasture, which could further improve lambs performance. This novel approach to parasite control would be of interest amongst both organic and conventional sheep farmers operating in mountain regions.  相似文献

Abstract

Factors influencing rate of barren ewes, number of lambs born per pregnant ewe, and autumn live weight of the lambs were studied in 627 Norwegian sheep flocks based on herd level data from the Norwegian Sheep Recording System and a mailed questionnaire to the sheep farmers. The following factors were significantly associated (P<0.05) with rate of barren ewes: breed, herd average lambing date, type of production/age of farmer, routines for treatments for parasites, and housing type. Number of lambs born per pregnant ewe was significantly associated with rate of barren ewes, herd average lambing date, breed, percentage grass silage of total roughage, and no separation of gimmers during the housing period. Corrected autumn live weight of the lambs was significantly associated with breed, flock size, lambs born per pregnant ewe, no separation of gimmers during the housing period, and type of summer pasture.  相似文献

A hairy shaker disease outbreak occurred on a Southland farm in spring 1992 in a flock of 100 2-year-old ewes and 350 older ewes. About 80 of the 2-year-old ewes produced lambs that were small and coarse-fleeced but robust. Most of these lambs were born early in the season. The lambs born later in the season appeared normal.  相似文献

Maedi-visna (MV) infection was detected in a cohort of 68 purchased ewes, one of several groups of sheep introduced to a farm after the previous stock had been culled with suspected foot-and-mouth disease in 2001. Except for short periods totalling six to seven weeks when the sheep co-grazed with 13 ewe lambs and ram lambs, the infected cohort was kept separate from other sheep on the farm over a total of 21 months. During this period two crops of lambs were reared from the infected ewes. All the lambs were fattened and killed, and all ewes were culled after the second crop of lambs had been weaned. Subsequent serological testing of the remaining sheep on the farm confirmed the elimination of MV infection from the flock, leading to its acceptance in the Maedi Visna Accreditation Scheme of the Scottish Agricultural College's Sheep and Goat Health Schemes.  相似文献

An m:n matched case–control study was conducted to identify risk factors for ovine clinical mastitis (CM). Data were from a national sheep registry and only ewes that lambed in the spring of 2004 were included. Eligible cases (n = 2857) and controls (n = 76,716) from 1056 flocks of meat sheep were matched on flock and conditional logistic regression was used for analysis of the data. CM risk was associated with age of the ewe and whether or not assistance at lambing was needed owing to dystocia; however, the effects of both these factors were modified by the number of lambs born. In ewes with 1 lamb, increasing age was associated with increased odds of CM (OR = 1.2 for each 1-year increase), while only a slight numerical increase in the odds was observed in ewes with >1 lamb. Dystocia was associated with increased odds of CM in ewes with 1 lamb (OR = 1.7) or 2 lambs (OR = 1.4), while no association was observed in ewes with >2 lambs. The odds of CM increased markedly with increasing number of lambs born to the ewe. For example, odds for 2-year-old ewes without dystocia were 6.7 times greater for those with >3 lambs than for those with 1 lamb. Compared with ewes of old Norwegian breeds, ewes of other breeds were more likely to experience CM (OR = 1.7). Ewes treated for CM at least once during the preceding 3 years had 4.0 times greater odds of CM compared with ewes without a CM history. It is likely that the effect estimates from this study, which are adjusted for breed and unaffected by inter-flock variations, are valid also for other meat sheep populations.  相似文献

A total of 147 ewes, 4 rams and 188 lambs of their progeny of the Djallonké breed of sheep were used to study the factors affecting reproductive and growth traits and the causes of lamb mortality. Data on ewes were collected during a 12-month period, while those on the lambs born to 123 of the ewes were collected until they were 12 months of age. The average fertility and abortion rates were 0.84 and 0.09. The fertility rate increased and the abortion rate decreased with increasing age of the ewes (p<0.05). The number of lambs born per ewe joined, litter weight at birth per ewe joined and litter weight at weaning per ewe joined were 1.28, 3.5 kg and 17 kg, respectively. The average numbers of lambs born per ewe, lambs born alive per ewe, lambs born dead per ewe and lambs per ewe that died between birth and weaning were 1.53, 1.43, 0.03 and 0.3, respectively. The age of the ewes significantly (p<0.05) affected all these traits except the number of dead lambs and the index of fertility (94%). The age of the ewes significantly (p<0.05) affected the birth weight and the weight at 6 and 12 months of age, whereas the lambing season significantly (p<0.05) affected all the growth traits studied. The type of birth was the most important source of variation in body weights of lambs. Sex had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the growth traits studied. The complex `starvation–bad management–light body weight at birth' caused 48% of the lamb mortality between birth and weaning, while diarrhoea, pneumonia and internal and external parasites caused approximately 52% of the lamb mortality over the same period. The seasonal raw mortality rate of the lambs before weaning was highest in the humid season.  相似文献

Madam:– This is the first report in New Zealand of what appears to be an inherited neuromuscular disease in Dorset Down sheep. During two successive breeding seasons approximately 20% of ewes in a stud flock comprising 54 ewes and one ram gave birth to lambs showing pronounced weakness of either both hind or all four limbs. Over 20 male or female single, twin, or one of a pair of twin lambs were affected. From birth these animals were alert and could raise their heads but they were unable to stand. Characteristically they lay with hindlimbs tucked under their bodies and forelimbs splayed sideways. Most affected lambs were slaughtered but those which were hand reared made a partial recovery. One such animal examined at five weeks of age showed pronounced flexion of the tarsal joints so that it walked on its hocks. The forelimbs were held unusually straight and the carpal joints occasionally knuckled over when the lamb walked. The limb joints were fully mobile upon manipulation and the hindlimbs were able to bear weight for short periods of time.  相似文献

A feeding experiment was carried out in which adult ewes of the Ethiopian Highland Menz breed grazed on meadow pasture were supplemented with urea-molasses block and/or noug cake. There was low consumption of urea-molasses block (67 gd-1) and its contribution to total nitrogen requirement was minimal. Dietary treatment had no significant effect on liveweight changes of ewes, their reproductive performance and performance of the lambs. When there was liver fluke infection, ewes and their lambs which were supplemented with urea-molasses block and/or noug cake had better survival compared to those which did not get any supplements (35% mortality vs 55%). The rumen ammonia-N concentration was significantly lower in the control sheep (11 mg/100 ml) and those that received only urea-molasses (14 mg/100 ml) and highest in sheep receiving the urea-molasses block and noug cake (26 mg/100 ml). The volatile fatty acid proportions were not significantly affected by the diets. Low level of urea-molasses block consumption seemed to be a main factor limiting the usefulness of the urea-molasses block and it is recommended that factors likely to enhance its consumption be investigated.  相似文献

In a study of the relationship between pasture rotation in Illinois and acquisition of nematodes (mostly Haemonchus contortus) and body weight gains by lambs grazing with their ewes, 2 pasture rotation systems were tested. (1) Lambs and ewes were rotated through a series of 12 alfalfa-bromegrass-lespedeza pastures, each pasture being grazed for 3 to 4 days and rested for 5.5 weeks; 4 complete rotations were done during a 168-day grazing season. (2) Lambs and ewes were moved every 2 days, and 3 complete rotations of 50, 42, and 54 days, respectively, were done during the 146-day grazing season. The lambs under rotation had more nematodes and gained less weight than nonrotated control lambs, although rotation increased the amount of pasturage. Rotation is not recommended to control nematode parasitism of sheep in Illinois.  相似文献

AIMS: To develop a challenge model for Salmonella Brandenburg infection in pregnant ewes. To compare efficacies of a live attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium mutant, a subunit preparation from a virulent S. Brandenburg isolate, and a commercial multivalent inactivated vaccine in their ability to prevent experimental S. Brandenburg infection. To assess the efficacy of the live attenuated S. Typhimurium mutant against natural S. Brandenburg infection in lambs.

METHODS: Two-year-old ewes were immunised with either a live attenuated vaccine (eye-drop; n=20), a subunit vaccine (n=20) or an inactivated bacterin vaccine (n=20), both administered subcutaneously, or served as unvaccinated controls (n=21). Four weeks later, the sensitising regime was repeated as a booster vaccination, and the ewes were challenged 6 weeks later with a virulent S. Brandenburg isolate, approximately 6 weeks prior to lambing. The presence of clinical signs, abortion or death was noted following challenge. The presence and number of Salmonella spp in faecal samples taken throughout the trial, and in organs collected post mortem, were determined using an enrichment selection procedure, and confirmed by serology and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Half of the surviving lambs were vaccinated with the live attenuated vaccine and all (n=39) were exposed to natural infection from contaminated pasture.

RESULTS: There was no significant protection against mortality and abortion following vaccination with the live attenuated, subunit and inactivated vaccines following experimental challenge with S. Brandenburg. There was a significant but transient decrease in the number of ewes shedding S. Brandenburg (live attenuated, p=0.05; subunit, p=0.05; inactivated, p=0.01), and in the quantity of these bacteria in the sheep from the vaccinated groups (p<0.05) compared with controls, 6 weeks after challenge. Lambs from the challenged ewes did not shed Salmonella spp after being vaccinated with the live attenuated vaccine, in contrast to some of the controls, when grazed on pasture contaminated with S. Brandenburg.

CONCLUSIONS: The use of live attenuated, subunit and inactivated vaccines did not significantly protect sheep against lethal experimental challenge with S. Brandenburg.  相似文献

Background Several outbreaks of goitre, considered to be related to iodine deficiency, occurred in sheep flocks throughout Victoria in 2010. Objective We describe one outbreak in Merino–Border Leicester‐cross ewes and their lambs in north‐east Victoria that appeared to be associated with increased rainfall and pasture growth, particularly during the preceding summer and autumn. Results The outbreak was characterised by a four‐fold increase in neonatal lamb deaths and goitre, alopecia and poor skeletal development in the lambs. Most cases occurred in lambs born to 2‐year‐old crossbred ewes that had grazed long, lush perennial pastures throughout their entire pregnancy, whereas few cases occurred in mature crossbred or Merino ewes that had grazed shorter, annual pastures on hill country for 3 weeks in late pregnancy but were otherwise managed similarly. Conclusion Existing recommendations for south‐eastern Australia are that only spring‐lambing ewes in iodine‐deficient areas require iodine supplementation to prevent goitre in years with high autumn–winter rainfall. Aspects of this outbreak suggest that ewes lambing at other times of the year and grazing abundant pasture for prolonged periods may also require supplementation to prevent goitre, even if autumn–winter rainfall does not exceed previously established thresholds.  相似文献

Inherited rickets of Corriedale sheep is of simple autosomal recessive inheritance. The gross and histological lesions include segmental thickening of physes, persistence of hypertrophic chondrocytes at sites of endochondral ossification, excessive osteoclastic resorption, microfractures and wide unmineralised osteoid seams lining trabeculae and filling secondary osteons. Initial testing revealed concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 were normal, but those of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 were increased in serum of affected sheep, suggesting a defect in the vitamin D receptor. However, in vitro studies on cultured skin fibroblasts revealed normal binding and function of the vitamin D receptor.

A genome-wide association study was conducted using the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip. A homozygous region of 199 consecutive single-nucleotide polymorphism loci was identified in affected sheep, covering a region of 10 megabase pairs on ovine chromosome 6. Of the 91 candidate genes in this region, dentin matrix protein 1 gene (dmp1) was considered the most likely as it is known to play critical roles in osteocyte maturation and mineral metabolism. Sequencing of DNA from carriers showed a nonsense mutation 253T/C in dmp1. This T/C transition introduced a stop codon (R145X) that could truncate C-terminal amino acids. Using PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism for this mutation, genotyping showed that all affected sheep were “TT” genotypes, and phenotypically normal sheep were either “CT” or “CC”. These findings suggest that a mutation in dmp1 is responsible for inherited rickets of Corriedale sheep. A simple diagnostic test is currently being designed to identify carriers with the defective “T” alleles.  相似文献

A condition in Australian sheep resembling border disease was transmitted by the inoculation of pregnant ewes with material from affected lambs. This material contained mucosal disease virus (MDV). Twenty-two lambs comprising 6 from uninoculated control ewes, together with 11 with hairy coats and 5 with normal coats from inoculated ewes, were observed from 7 to 182 days after birth. Nine of the lambs from inoculated ewes died during the experiment from a variety of causes. Glial cell abnormalities were observed in control and affected lambs, but only 4 of the 11 hairy lambs were judged to have abnormal glial cells. There were no consistent histopathological findings indicative of MDV infection. MDV was recovered from tissues of all 11 hairy lambs, but not from any of the lambs with normal coats. The hairy lambs appeared to be immunologically tolerant to the virus. Susceptible sheep in contact with the hairy lambs were infected with MDV. It is suggested that a condition in Australian lambs characterised by hairiness of the birth coat and poor viability is due to foetal infection with a mucosal disease virus.  相似文献
