The effects of necrotic laryngitis on the mechanics of breathing and gas exchange were investigated in five Belgian blue double muscled calves two to three months old. All the animals showed the typical clinical picture of the respiratory syndrome associated with naturally occurring necrotic laryngitis. Highly significant increases in total pulmonary resistance, minute viscous work of breathing and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient, and highly significant decreases in dynamic lung compliance and arterial oxygen tension were recorded in the infected animals, when compared to reference values for healthy cattle. The ratio of inspiratory to expiratory viscous work of breathing was also significantly increased probably because of a partial collapse of the extrathoracic trachea during inspiration. It was concluded that necrotic laryngitis disturbs pulmonary function to such an extent that it impedes the growing process and predisposes the infected animals to secondary bronchopneumonia and ventilatory failure due to respiratory muscle fatigue.  相似文献

Three techniques for the detection of rotavirus in faecal samples from calves with neonatal gastroenteritis were compared. A preliminary study indicated that reverse passive haemagglutination (RPHA) was at least as sensitive as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). These two immunoassays were compared with the detection of viral RNA by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) on 209 field samples. Of the 77 samples in which at least one test gave a positive result, 69 were positive by both RPHA and PAGE, but only 49 were also positive by ELISA, indicating a lower sensitivity for the latter test. The overall agreement between RPHA and PAGE was 96%. The reasons for the discrepancies between the tests are discussed.  相似文献

莒县某养鸡专业户饲养海兰商品代产蛋鸡4600只,于210日龄发病,初发时精神稍差,采食量略有减少,蛋色变浅,少量鸡排绿色粪便,并伴有轻微呼吸道症。曾用过红霉素、强力霉素、蒽诺沙星等药物治疗4d,均未见效,而且病情越来越重,病鸡死亡逐日增多,到发病第5d死亡69只。 1 临床症状 约有10%的鸡只表现精神沉郁,不愿走动、垂头缩颈,厌食。有的病鸡表现为呼吸困难,眼睑肿胀、流泪,鼻液增多,咳嗽;部分病鸡常作摇摆和吞咽动作,嗉囊内充满粘性液体分泌物;多数表现为翅、腿麻痹,排黄绿或白绿色稀粪,腥臭难闻,不久便死亡。 2 剖检变化 腺胃乳头、泄殖腔出血,盲肠扁桃体肿大出血;小肠充血、出血,以十二指肠最为严重,常呈弥漫性出血;肺出血、气囊混浊、壁增厚,气囊内有黄色干酪样分泌物。大部分病鸡出现心包炎和肝周炎,腹腔及肠系膜有干酪样渗出物。 3 实验室诊断  相似文献

Clinical findings, therapy, and prognosis of 20 calves with urachal problems were studied and are discussed. Ultrasonography proved to be a valuable adjunct diagnostic procedure to manual palpation. It allowed exact evaluation of the intraabdominal umbilical cord size and was an important aid in the selection of the correct therapy. A complete omphalourachectomy was performed in calves with an extra- and intraabdominal umbilical cord diameter of up to 10 cm, otherwise drainage was established. Based on our results prognosis for calves with urachitis is independent of the size of the umbilicus and can be judged as favourable in cases without systemic complications.  相似文献

An ultrasonography was performed in 21 healthy male calves of Nellore (n = 8), Curraleiro Pe-duro (n = 7) and Pantaneiro (n = 6) breeds, between 8 and 12 months, with the objective to display information about size, position and ultrasonographic parenchymal patterns of the liver, in addition to the topography of the gallbladder, right kidney and major vessels. The measurements used were dorsal margin distance (DMD) and ventral margin distance (VMD) of the liver, viewable extension (VE) of the liver, the caudal vena cava (CVC), width (CVCW) and depth (CVCD) and the portal vein (PV), width (PVW) and depth (PVD). The measures DMD, VMD and VE were similar, and the organ’s longest visible extension was in 11th ICS. CVC was more frequently observed in the 11th and 10th ICS, despite being visible from the 12th to the 9th ICS in Nellore and still 8th ICS in Curraleiro Pe-duro and Pantaneiro. CVCD was lower in the 10th and 9th ICS in Nellore. The PV presented higher observation frequency in the 10th ICS. The measures PVD and PVW were higher in Nellore in the 11th, 10th and 9th ICS. To our knowledge, this report is the first to document ultrasonographic findings in three healthy calves. Considering the three breeds, the results show no differences in the ultrasonographic features as regard to the measurements and visualization of the position, size and vasculature of the liver and there was no additional information about the topography of the gallbladder and the right kidney.  相似文献

This study was performed to evaluate the cross section of the thymus in 46 clinically healthy Holstein calves and heifers from birth to 100 weeks of age and 8 age-matched affected animals with chronic bronchopneumonia by ultrasonography. The cross sectional area of the thymus increased in healthy calves and heifers from birth to 31 weeks of age, peaked around 35 weeks of age, and then decreased until 100 weeks after birth. A positive correlation (r = 0.74, P < 0.05) was found between the area in cross section and the weight of the whole thymus in calves and heifers with chronic bronchopneumonia. The cross- sectional areas of the thymus were significantly (P < 0.05) lowered in animals with chronic bronchopneumonia. The cross sections of thymus in clinically healthy calves at 2 weeks of age and heifers at 34 weeks and 87 weeks of age were hypoechoic, moderately hyperechoic and hyperechoic, respectively. The observation of thymus by ultrasonography seems to be an effective tool for estimating the size of the thymus objectively in Holstein calves and heifers from birth to 100 weeks of age. The results of this study prove the approach to be useful and applicable to monitor the growth of thymus in Holstein calves and heifers and their association with chronic pneumonia.  相似文献

An immunoperoxidase technique was used to study the relationship between the necrotic lesions and causative bacteria found in lungs of 53 calves that had naturally acquired pneumonia. Four types of necrotic lesions were identified on the basis of morphologic characteristics as follows: type 1 had coagulation necrosis surrounded by a dense zone of numerous degenerated leukocytes; type 2 was similar to type 1, but the central area of the lesions was severely affected, had no alveolar architecture remaining, and was surrounded by a thin, sparse layer of degenerated leukocytes; type 3 had small swirling accumulation of degenerated leukocytes; and type 4 had necropurulent lesions resembling abscesses. By use of the immunoperoxidase technique, Pasteurella haemolytica serovar 1 antigen was confirmed to be associated with the necrotic lesions in many cases of type 1 and in some cases of types 2 and 3. Although some lesions were induced by other bacteria (Haemophilus somnus or Actinomyces pyogenes), the pneumonic lesions associated with P haemolytica could be differentiated from other pneumonic lesions in calves by use of the immunoperoxidase technique.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to determine the prevalences of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in dairy calves less than 6 months of age in Norway. Faecal samples were collected from a total of 1386 calves, between 3 and 183 days of age, in 136 dairy farms from three different areas of Norway. Faecal samples were examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts after concentration and immunofluorescent staining.

Giardia was found in 93% (127 out of 136) of the farms and in 49% (679 out of 1386) of the calves. Cryptosporidium was found in 53% (72 out of 136) of the farms and in 12% (167 out of 1386) of the calves. The level of Giardia and/or Cryptosporidium was low in the majority of the infected calves.

Infection peaked in the age group 2–3 months for both Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The prevalences of both parasites were higher in samples taken during winter than in samples taken during summer, and statistically significant differences were found when prevalences in different age groups of calves were compared between the three areas. A significantly lower prevalence of Cryptosporidium was found in calves housed in shared pens that were thoroughly washed more than three times a year than in calves from pens washed less often. For Giardia there was a trend for decreasing intensity of infection with increasing age in the sampled calves. For Cryptosporidium there was a trend for increasing herd prevalence with increasing number of calves in the herd, but this trend was not statistically significant. Other parameters which were investigated such as housing, feeding or management routines were not associated with prevalence or intensity of infection with either parasite.  相似文献

Summary

An intravenous low dosage of sulphanilamide (SAA) (14.0 mg/kg) to 6 pre‐ruminant calves revealed a biphasic SAA plasma disposition with a mean elimination half‐life of 4.1 h. The main metabolite in plasma was N4‐acetylsulphanilamide (N4), which 4 hours after injection exceeded the parent SAA plasma concentration. Urinary recovery of SAA was 10 to 16% of the dose; of N4, it was at least 69%. Traces of the N1‐acetyl (N1) metabolite and the doubly acetylated derivative (N1N4) were present in urine. The renal clearances of the N1 and N4 metabolites showed a tubular secretion pattern, which was at least 2 to 6 times higher than that of SAA.

A single high oral SAA dose of 200 mg/kg to 3 dairy cows resulted in extensive metabolism of SAA into N4 N1, and N1N4 metabolites; their mean maximum plasma concentrations were 64, 48, 0.72 and 24 μg/ml, respectively. The mean disposition half‐life of SAA in plasma and milk was 10 h. In milk the metabolite concentrations exceeded those in plasma; the N4 and N1N4 metabolite concentrations in milk exceeded that of SAA. The mean maximum concentrations of SAA, N4, N1, and N1N4 in milk were 52, 89, 2.3, and 98 pg/ml. respectively. For SAA and its metabolites, the binding to plasma and milk proteins was determined. No glucuronide or sulphate conjugates of SAA and its acetyl metabolites could be found in plasma, milk, or urine.

Based on the sensitivity of the bioassay (0.2 μg SAA/ml), a withholding time of 5 days was suggested for milk following single oral SAA dosage of 200 mg/kg.  相似文献

One hundred Danish dairy calves had temperature loggers implanted subcutaneously on the neck. Post-operatively, the calves were given a single antibiotic treatment, and tissue reactions were assessed on 6 post-operative visits. After approximately 5 months, the loggers were removed and material submitted for histologic examination. This paper presents 1) the surgical procedure, 2) the prevalence of tissue reaction at the post-operative visits, 3) the degree of implant recovery, 4) the results of histopathologic examinations, 5) an evaluation of age at implantation or veterinary practitioner as risk factors for tissue reaction and missing implant recovery 5 months after implantation, and 6) evaluation of tissue reaction as a risk factor for lack of recovery 5 months after implantation. The implant was rejected on 7 calves (7%). Additionally, 5 calves (5%) had the temperature logger removed because of presence of an abcess. No migration of the temperature loggers were observed. The results of a repeated measures analysis and the histopathological findings indicate that contamination during the surgery resulted in inflammation and abcess formation. It is recommended that in the presence of an abcess, the temperature logger should be removed.  相似文献
