At one time, it was estimated that the majority of dogs and cats in the United States received 90% or more of their nutrition from complete and balanced commercially prepared foods, and this estimate was reaffirmed in a 2004 survey. However, 4 years and several pet food and treat recalls later, fewer pet owners are feeding commercial pet food products exclusively and more are asking questions and looking for alternatives. As in any market-driven economy, there are many more alternative diets and food products available today from which pet owners may select. A difficult to measure but growing number of clients are feeding homemade diets that provide 100% of their pet's nutrition, while a larger number are feeding a combination of products, treats, and home prepared meals. Most practitioners can attest to this increase in their client's interest in homemade meals and to having insufficient knowledge to assist them. At a time when motivated clients are considering homemade for their pets as an alternative, veterinarians are less than adequately versed in canine and feline nutrition and dietary options. The article addresses the two most important health issues concerning pet owners and veterinarians about homemade diets: nutritional integrity and food safety.  相似文献

Two controlled studies to determine efficacy in the horse were performed with eltenac, a new injectable, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Clinical trials were carried out with a dose rate of 1 mg/kg body weight in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind design to assess therapeutic efficacy in acute inflammatory disorders and in animals with orthopaedic conditions. In a preliminary pharmacokinetic investigation in six horses mean elimination half-life was 1.7 h after i.v. administration. In the first clinical study, analgesic activity on pain-related lameness was determined in a total of 64 horses. Pain was assessed using a rating scale. Compared with the placebo treatment, eltenac produced significant pain relief after a single i.v. injection for a period of 24 h. In the second trial the anti-oedematous effect was determined in post-operative wound swelling following castration in two groups of 10 colts. After surgery, the horses received either an injection of 1 mg/kg eltenac or a placebo injection on three consecutive days. Swelling was assessed by measuring the diameter of the external preputial fold using two methods: callipers and a rating scale of 0 to 3. Additionally, photographs were taken on days 1, 2 and 4. Compared with the placebo treatment, eltenac inhibited pain and swelling significantly. The effect was maintained for up to 48 h after the last injection.  相似文献

The macrolide group of antibiotics includes natural members, pro-drugs and semi-synthetic derivatives, thus named because they are composed of a large aglycone ring (from 14 to 16 carbon atoms), to which are attached several sugars. Some of them are amino-sugars, containing a diethylamino, tertiary amine function. A number of antibiotics, including erythromycin, oleandomycin, triacetyl-oleandomycin (troleandomycin), carbomycin, spiramycin, tylosin, rosamicin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, dirithromycin and others, are members of this group. On a comparative basis, erythromycin and oleandomycin are similar, with the same basic 14-carbon lactone ring and side chain sugars. The remaining compounds contain a basic 15- or 16-carbon lactone ring and one or two side-chain sugars. Most of the macrolides are produced by Streptomyces spp bacteria. An exception is rosamicin, which is produced by Micromonospora. Clarithromycin and azithromycin are new semi-synthetic derivatives of erythromycin.  相似文献

Observations were made for two consecutive days on the disposition of oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, neomycin and gentamicin through the digestive tract of pigs given an oral drench. The effect of these antibiotics upon the colibacilli flora and upon an Escherichia coli 127 strain in small filter membrane bags placed into the caecum was also investigated. For chloramphenicol, inactivation by antibiotic resistant colibacilli and, for neomycin, losses of activity by digestive content may explain the lower concentrations obtained in the gut and the correlative lack of curative or preventive action against E coli 127 in small bags. Tetracycline and gentamicin prevented growth of E coli 127 from the second day.  相似文献

Mammalian cell tissue culture has been a critical tool leading to our current understanding of cancer including many aspects of cellular transformation, growth and response to therapies. The current use of large panels of cell lines with associated phenotypic and genotypic information now allows for informatics approaches and in silico screens to rapidly test hypotheses based on simple as well as complex relationships. Current cell line panels with large amounts of associated drug sensitivity and genomics data are comprised of human cancer cell lines (i.e. NCI60 and GDSC). There is increased recognition of the contribution of canine cancer to comparative cancer research as a spontaneous large animal model with application in basic and translational studies. We have assembled a panel of canine cancer cell lines to facilitate studies in canine cancer and report here phenotypic and genotypic data associated with these cells.  相似文献

A 5-year-old infertile Hutsul mare was subjected to cytogenetic analysis. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) using the equine Xp and Xq chromosome painting probes was carried out on chromosome preparations obtained after blood lymphocyte culture. These probes were generated by chromosome microdissection and a large number of spreads was analysed (525). The karyotype formula of the analysed mare was 64,XX/65,XX+Xp with the ratio of the two lines being 99.4 and 0.6, respectively. The goal of the study was to apply chromosome microdissection and the FISH technique for cytogenetic diagnostics.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe semiconductor diode laser use for anterior uveal cyst deflation and coagulation in dogs, horses and cats. ANIMALS STUDIED: The presenting clinical signs, surgical technique and postoperative results for four dogs, nine horses and seven cats with anterior uveal cysts treated with diode laser are described. Treated cysts were of sufficient size and/or number to potentially impair vision, damage the corneal endothelium, or increase intraocular pressure (IOP). One dog with free-floating cysts exhibited 'fly biting' behavior. Cysts were suspected of causing shying on the affected side and/or head-shaking behavior in seven horses. Cysts were free floating within the anterior chamber in dogs, occurred in the corpora nigrum in horses and were attached to the posterior iris surface in cats. In cats, shallowing of the anterior chamber and dyscoria were observed. In all cats prior to cyst deflation, IOP increased after pharmacologic pupil dilation. Cats were more likely than dogs and horses to have bilateral and multiple cysts. PROCEDURE: Two dogs and all horses were treated without general anesthesia and two dogs and all cats were treated under general anesthesia. Diode laser was used to perforate, deflate and coagulate the cysts. RESULTS: Postoperatively, all eyes were free of discomfort or significant inflammation and minimal or no topical or systemic anti-inflammatory therapy was required. Abnormal behavior improved or resolved in all cases. In all cats, IOP 24 h after photocoagulation was lower than the postdilation IOP. Cysts did not recur, but new cysts were discovered in several cases. CONCLUSION: Semiconductor diode laser coagulation of anterior uveal cysts is safe, effective and noninvasive.  相似文献

The WHO International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) framework for analyzing the relevance of a cancer mode of action (MoA) for humans (IPCS cancer-HRF) is an application to assess human relevance of tumorigenic hazards found through rodent bioassays. The chloroacetanilide herbicides, butachlor and alachlor, induced enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cell tumors in rat stomachs, at the highest doses. This study analyzed the human relevance of this tumor by applying the IPCS cancer-HRF using published data. In a postulated MoA, early key events (KEs) included decreased mucosal thickness in the fundic region, due to reduced parietal cells. The following KEs included increased pH of gastric acid and hypergastrinemia, leading to enhanced cell proliferation and hyperplasia, and resulting in the outcome of an ECL cell tumor. The data showed consistencies in dose-response and temporal concordance with the KEs and specificity in the tumor response, providing strengthened evidence of the KEs. While the early KE was not the same, similar MoAs have already been established for omeprazole and ciprofloxacin. The integrated data indicated that the postulated MoAs were biologically plausible. Alternative MoAs were excluded.. Based on sufficient evidence, an MoA was established in rats. When addressing chemically inducible MoAs of human relevance, KEs of hypergastrinemia and trophic ECL cell hyperplasia were judged to not be qualitatively and quantitatively plausible in humans. The MoA in rats is unlikely to be present in humans; however, the potential effects on parietal cells cannot be excluded. Thus, the IPCS cancer-HRF is very useful for assessing human relevance.  相似文献
