Surveys were made at the end of the 1990 and 1991 growing seasons for root-inhabiting fungi in the genera Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon and Pythium from the roots of one year-old container-grown Douglas-fir and spruce seedlings grown under greenhouse conditions. In the 1990 survey of four nurseries, it was found that 61–97% of both Douglas-fir and spruce roots were colonized with Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon or Pythium. There were significantly (p0.05) more Douglas-fir roots than spruce roots colonized by Fusarium at all nurseries, however, there were significantly (p0.05) more spruce roots than Douglas-fir roots colonized by Cylindrocarpon and Pythium. Root colonization of Douglas-fir and spruce by the three fungal genera during 1991 varied from 0–82% at three nurseries, however, only at a south coastal nursery was there significantly (p0.05) more spruce than Douglas-fir roots colonized by Cylindrocarpon. Significantly more seedlings were infected in 1990 than in 1991. In 1991, there were few significant differences between Douglas-fir and spruce, in the percentage of seedlings with colonized roots and in the percentage of growth medium colonized by the fungi. However, there were significant differences between nurseries. 相似文献

In forest and conservation nurseries in the Pacific Northwest USA, seedling production can be limited by root diseases caused by fungi in the genera Fusarium Link:Fr., Cylindrocarpon Wollenw., Phytophthora de Barry, and Pythium Pringsh. Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon, and Pythium are the most ubiquitous, whereas incidence of Phytophthora is mostly associated with coastal bareroot nurseries. All of these root pathogens are encouraged by water saturated soils or media. Seedlings infected with Fusarium, Phytophthora, or Pythium often appear chlorotic or necrotic with extensive root decay. Cylindrocarpon often causes serious root decay without shoot symptoms. The best approach to mitigate losses from these diseases is to use a holistic integrated pest management program. This program should combine chemical controls with cultural practices, particularly those that increase soil permeability and drainage and reduce potential sources of inoculum, especially by disinfesting seeds and containers reused for crops. In general, we found that seedlings meeting nursery specifications for outplanting on forest soil (proper height, root collar diameter, healthy shoot color, lack of disease symptoms) but having these disease organisms on their root systems perform as well as non-infected seedlings. 相似文献

Statistically significant differences were found in 14 needle traits of western white pine (Pinus monticola Dougl.) seedlings grown from the same seed orchard source in the three nurseries in northern Idaho. Traits with significant variation included needle length and width, number of stomatal rows, number of stomata per row, total stomata per needle, adaxial surface area, stomatal density, major axes of stomata, stomatal shape, stomatal area, stomatal occlusion, epistomatal wax degradation, weight of wax per dry weight of needle, and the contact angles of water droplets placed on adaxial needle surfaces. Wax crystallites on needle surfaces were hollow and tubular and the amount of surface wax appeared to be associated with surface wettability. Our results may have important implications for tree improvement programs that require successful inoculation of nursery-grown seedlings with spores of Cronartium ribicola J. C. Fisch. ex Rabenh. to reliably screen white pines for resistance to blister rust. 相似文献

In 1988 an experiment was established to stimulate the effect of windthrow on low-and high-productivity forest types in coastal British Columbia. It was hypothesized that site productivity may be improved by mixing the upper 1 m of the organic matter and mineral soil. Results of this study indicated that soil mixing (1) slightly increased soil pH and temperature on both forest types after 2 and 5 years, (2) decreased all soil nutrient availability indices on the high productivity type after 2 years, but resulted in no difference from the control after 5 years, and (3) decreased microbial activity and cellulose loss rate and most soil nutrient availability indices on the low-productivity type after 2 and 5 years. Soil mixing greatly reduced Gaultheria shallon above-ground biomass on both low- and high productivity forest types, whereas biomass of Epilobium angustifolium and other plant species increased slightly on the high-productivity type after 2 and 5 vears. Tsuga heterophylla was taller on high-productivity type and on mixed plots in both types after 2 and 5 years. Thuja plicata was taller on the high-productivity type after 5 years only. The increased conifer growth measured on the mixed low-productivity type was attributed to higher levels of available nutrients due to reduced G. shallon competition. 相似文献

Efficiency of neem and groundnut oils in protecting leguminous tree seeds against seed beetles in the Sahel 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of our study was to test the comparative efficiency of neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil, groundnut oil and a synthetic insecticide, K-Othrine®, in protecting stocks of leguminous tree seeds against seed beetles under Sahelian conditions. The following insect/seed combinations were used as models: Caryedon acaciae/Acacia nilotica, C. longispinosus/A. raddiana and C. serratus/Tamarindus indica. Neem oil, when used at concentrations of 5 to 20 ml per kg of seeds, had pronounced adulticidal and ovicidal effects which were maintained for five months. No significant fall in seed viability was observed except in the case of C. acaciae/A. nilotica. Groundnut oil, when used at concentrations of 5 to 20 ml per kg of seeds, had pronounced adulticidal and ovicidal effects which were relatively short-lived. A significant fall in seed viability was observed over five months. K-Othrine®, when used at concentrations ranging from 25 to 100 mg per kg, had high adulticidal effects which were maintained for five months. However, K-Othrine® was found to have no ovicide properties. No significant fall in seed viability was observed. This study concluded that it is possible to use neem oil, a product that can be obtained locally at low cost, to efficiently protect tree seed stocks in the Sahel. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

Possible differences in the size and dynamics of the appearance of particular generations of Cameraria ohridella were studied at two city sites of different size and character. The differences in the degree of infestation of Aesculus hippocastanum by the horse chestnut leafminer in the two towns are interpreted as a result of the differences in the size of food resources. The greater degree of infestation of trees in Mosina relative to trees in Pozna is most probably a result of the difficulty of aerial dispersion and thereby much stronger competition for food. This conclusion confirms a positive correlation of the distance between localities with the degree of tree infestation in a small town and the lack of such a correlation in a big city. The presence of refuges in the city outskirts at which no raking and removal of leaves is performed does not seem to have a significant effect on the degree of horse chestnut infestation in the centre. 相似文献

Seedlings from a wide array of 23 species, varieties, and geographic races were screened for resistance topitch canker using artificial inoculation in agreenhouse. Seed to represent these taxa weregenerally collected in natural stands. In addition, seedlings from 79 families of P. radiata fromcommercial populations from Chile and New Zealand werescreened in a separate experiment. There was littlevariation in resistance among the commercial P.radiata families, with over 98% mortality. Similarresults were obtained with native P. radiatapopulations. All close relatives of P. radiata(sub-section Patula) were very susceptible. However,a number of closed-cone pine species (specifically, from sub-section Oocarpa) were generally veryresistant, with survival approaching 100%. Inaddition, in P. oocarpa, P. jaliscana, and P. tecunumanii from low elevation provenances anextremely high frequency of trees suffered no apparentdamage from the pathogen (92%, 85% and 80%,respectively). 相似文献

An ongoing expansion of Myzocallis (L.) walshii (Monell) in the NE Iberian Peninsula was detected. The aphid species was recorded in Catalonia, Andorra and Navarra. Adaptation
of local native parasitoids (at least Trioxys pallidus Haliday and T. tenuicaudus Stary) to the new immigrant was documented, together with background information on their host range in the native environments.
The detection of parasitoids of M. walshii is the first published evidence in Europe. The new evidence for M. walshii in the NE Iberian Peninsula also supports the warning of the expansion of the aphid as a pest of Quercus rubra over Europe. 相似文献

Six months after planting, seedlings of the leguminous treeDalbergia nigra, known as Brazilian rosewood, wereinoculated with a selected Bradyrhizobium strainBHICB-DN 15,either alone or in combination with mycorrhizal fungi to determine their effecton the growth of D. nigra in Atlantic forest andeucalyptussoils. Height growth of D. nigra was similar in both soilsand six months after inoculation Bradyrhizobium did notaffect the D. nigra height growth, but it did improve drymass and especially in the nitrogen content of plants grown in eucalyptus soil. The success of the delayed inoculation with BHICB-DN 15 confirms its competitiveability vis-à-vis indigenous soil rhizobia. Co-inoculationof BHICB-DN 15 and mycorrhizal fungi did not increase plant dry weight, nitrogenand phosphorus content or mycorrhizal colonization. These results suggest thatthe BHICB-DN 15 strain had no synergistic relationship with the mycorrhizalfungi or that there was incompatibility between symbionts, in both soils. 相似文献

Dual inoculation of a woody legume (Centrolobium tomentosum) with rhizobia and mycorrhizal fungi in south-eastern Brazil 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The integration of N2 fixing trees into stable agroforestry systems in the tropics is being tested due to their ability to produce high biomass
N and P yields, when symbiotically associated with rhizobia and mycorrhizal fungi. The growth of Centrolobium tomentosum Guill. ex Benth, a native leguminous tree from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, was assessed with dual inoculation of Rhizobium spp and mycorrhizal fungi under field conditions. Complete fertilization was compared to treatments of inoculation with selected
rhizobia strains BHICB-Ab1 or BHICB-Ab3, associated or not to arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The dual inoculation increased
the height and growth in relation to the plants treated with rhizobia alone. Plants inoculated with strain BHICB-Ab1 and arbuscular
mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) exhibited an increase of 56% dry matter over uninoculated control and nitrogen accumulation was greater
than with BHICB-Ab3 inoculated plants. Strain BHICB-Ab1 presented a synergetic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi since the
combined inoculation with BHICB-Ab1 enhanced plant height and dry weight more than single inoculation while the growth of
BHICB-Ab3 plants was not modified by AMF inoculation. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enhanced plants survival and seemed to
favour the nodule occupation by rhizobia strains as compared to the non-mycorrhizal plants. Inoculation with selected rhizobia
and AMF improved the growth of C. tomentosum under field conditions.

Microorganisms associated with the oak platypodid beetle,Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), were isolated from the mycangium of adult females, from the proventriculus of adults of both sexes, and from
galleries in the period before dispersal. Fungi isolated from female mycangia were separated into three groups:Raffaelea sp., yeasts (mainlyCandida spp.), and other species.Raffaelea sp. was isolated predominantly from the teneral stage to the dispersal stage, but was not isolated from the mycangia of mother
beetles in new galleries. Yeasts were isolated in every beetle stage tested and their isolation rate was over 80% from the
teneral stage to the dispersal stage. All three fungal groups were found in the female proventriculus.Raffaelea sp. was isolated only in the dispersal stage at a rate of 40%, whereas the isolation rate of yeasts gradually increased beginning
in the mature stage and reached 100% in the rearing stage. In contrast, in the male proventriculus, onlyRaffaelea sp. and yeasts were isolated in the dispersal and rearing stages. The isolation rate in the rearing stage ofRaffaelea sp. was less than 20%, but that of yeasts was 100%, although these rates were almost the same in the dispersal stage.Raffaelea sp. and yeasts were also isolated from cradles containing eclosing pupae. These results suggest thatP. quercivorus acquiresRaffaelea sp. and yeasts in their mycangia from the cradles immediately after eclosion, and maintain them to the dispersal stage. Then,
they transmit these fungi from old to new galleries by way of mycangia, and possibly the digestive system. 相似文献

We carried out this study to clarify the relationships between the seasonal changes of bark stripping and food quality, and between bark-stripping intensity and bark nutrition with age of veitch fir (Abies veitchii) by sika deer (Cervus nippon) in the northern Mount Fuji district, from June 2000 to July 2003. We found that sika deer gnawed and ate all of the bark stripped, and a seasonal change in bark stripping occurred from December to May or June with a peak in March–April. The stripping period largely overlapped with the periods of low food availability and poor food nutrition (indicated by fecal chemical component index) of sika deer, from January to April. Both bark nutritional quality and bark-stripping intensity related to stand age and tree size of veitch fir negatively. Consequently, bark-stripping intensity related to bark nutritional quality positively. February is the worst forage period in terms of both quantity (due to deep snow) and quality (indicated by fecal chemical components). There was a time lag of 1 to 2 months in the peak of bark stripping in March–April when compared with the poor forage period in February. This time lag may suggest that sika deer need more nutritious and easily digested food from March due to increased nutrient demands that result from depleted body condition in both sexes, gestation of pregnant females, and the recovery of active metabolism. 相似文献

A series of available phosphorus (Olsen) levels ranging from 10 to 40 ppm were achieved in a semi-arid soil. The influence of the levels of phosphorus on the symbiotic interaction between two subtropical tree species, Acacia nilotica and Albizzia lebbeck, and a mixed inoculum of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi was evaluated in a greenhouse study. The extent to which the plant species depended on AM fungi for dry matter production decreased as the levels of soil P increased, but the degree of this decrease differed in the two species tested. Acacia nilotica colonized by AM fungi showed a significant increase in shoot P and dry matter at a soil P level of 10 ppm whereas in Albizzia lebbeck, such increase occurred at 20 ppm. Mycorrhizal inoculation response disappeared beyond soil P levels of 25 ppm in Acacia nilotica and 30 ppm in Albizzia lebbeck. Levels of soil P greater than 25 ppm suppressed AM fungus colonization in both species. Soil P levels of 30 and 40 ppm and 40 ppm caused negative mycorrhizal dependencies (MD) in Acacia nilotica and Albizzia lebbeck respectively. Values of MD for both species were negatively correlated with soil P levels. Based on the MD values, regression equations were developed to predict MD for given levels of available P. 相似文献

Miyake-Jima, a round island of about 8 km in diameter, is located about 200 km south of Tokyo, Japan (34°08′ N, 139°53′ E).
In July 2000, the central cone of this island collapsed and a new eruption started with the falling of volcanic ash and SO2 emission. In October 2001, we measured the distribution of bacteria, and Frankia, a symbiotic nitrogen-fixing actinomycete that forms root nodules, and ectomycorrhizal fungi associated with alder in newly
deposited ash and its underlying soil by cultivation of Alnus sieboldiana seedlings in these soils. There were fewer bacteria growing on the nutrient broth agar and fewer bacteria growing on 100-fold
diluted nutrient broth agar in newly deposited volcanic ash than there were growing in the buried old soil. In four out of
five sites, little or no nodulation was observed in newly deposited ash; abundant root nodules were formed in the underlying
soil. Ectomycorrhizae formed in the seedlings cultivated in the underlying soil. In May 2003, the distribution of Frankia and ectomycorrhizal fungi in soil at different depths (up to 160 cm) was also investigated. Frankia and ectomycorrhizal fungi were relatively abundant in surface soil layers. 相似文献

Emergency control of disease vectors requires high efficacy, rapid reaction and safe use of biocides in order interrupt transmission
cycles without harming humans, non-target animals and the environment. In countries with complex emergencies, air-borne large-scale
vector control is often limited, or impossible, due to questionable security as well as military, safety, equipment, or logistical
constraints. While facing a potential outbreak of malaria and dengue fever in the Kabul area, Afghanistan, combined with high
abundance of anopheline and Culex mosquitoes, emergency mosquito larvae control with Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) and methoprene were carried out. For the first time, larvicides were applied by using a modern fire fighting truck
in combination with aerial imaging of potential breeding sites. Three treatments with 0.07 g a.i. sterilized, water-dispersible
granular (WDG) Bti/m2 in combination with 0.0014 g a.i. methoprene/m2, or 0.07 g a.i. Bti/m2 alone, were conducted on July 29, August 29, and September 28, 2004, and significantly reduced larval indexes of 96.5 (P < 0.0001), 96.7 (P < 0.0001), and 97.6% (P < 0.0001) against anopheline, and 98.2 (P < 0.0001), 95.6 (P < 0.0001), and 96.2% (P < 0.0001) against Culex larvae, respectively. Before the larviciding campaigns started, up to 222.4 ± 32.0 mosquitoes were captured per standardized
light trap per night. During May until October 2004, the following anopheline and Culex species were abundant: A. superpictus (29.3%), A. fluviatilis (17.0%), C. pipiens (15.2%), and C. pseudovishnui (38.5%). After biolarviciding, abundance of adult mosquitoes, as measured by light trap catches 20 days post-treatment, decreased
significantly in Anopheles at 81.4 (P < 0.0001), 87.1 (P < 0.0001), and 78.2% (P = 0.01), and in part significantly in Culex for 75.2 (P < 0.0001), 78.3 (P < 0.0001), and 30.8% (P = 0.463), respectively. After the treatment, mosquito-associated annoyance complaints and disease transmission decreased
markedly, and not a single confirmed case of malaria or arbovirosis was reported. It is concluded that biolarviciding using
a fire fighting truck as the application device is a highly successful, rapid, and cost-effective method to control vector
mosquito larvae, and to reduce human exposure to mosquito-borne diseases during complex emergency situations. 相似文献

Soil drainage characteristics in winter and the heights and diameters of 10-year-old loblolly and slash pines (Pinus taeda L. and P. elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) were measured on three poorly-drained silt loam sites that had been bedded, furrowed, or disked before planting. Quadratic response functions were used to determine the relationship between depth to water table or volume of drained soil in winter and mean tree height or diameter. These quadratic response functions (species × height or diameter: drainage characteristics) showed that diameter and height were significantly related to soil drainage in winter on these silt loams soils. Slash pines grew better than loblolly pines under more poorly drained conditions while loblolly pines grew better under the better drained conditions. On unbedded silt loams, the soil drainage in winter needed to maximize tree height was 42 cm for loblolly and 49 cm for slash pine. Pines planted on beds did not generally grow better than those on flat-disked plots because where bedding would be most benefical the practice did not form enough additional drainage to significantly influence pine development. 相似文献

Species composition of galls on the leaves of Acer pseudoplatanus L. was analysed in 2002 in three localities: the Wolski Forest, near an urban agglomeration of Kraków, the Ojców National Park and the Andrychów Forest District. A total of 12,013 galls were found. The galls were caused by six insect or mite species. The species composition of the galls was identical in the three localities. Artacris cephaloneus (Nalepa) was the most abundant species. The index of occurrence frequency and Agrells index of species co-occurrence were calculated. The index of occurrence frequency (F) value was highest in the case of A. cephaloneus (1.277) and the lowest value, i.e. 0.00005—both from the Wolski Forest. The highest value for Agrells index of species co-occurrence, i.e. 0.900, was found in the case of Eriophyes pseudoplatani Corti and Drisina glutinosa Giard (Ojców National Park), and the lowest,0.050, for D. glutinosa and Coptophylla gymnaspis (Nalepa) (Wolski Forest; Andrychów FD) and for D. glutinosa and Dasineura irregularis (Bremi) (Andrychów FD). 相似文献

We determined the survival rate of tree families produced by the intra- and interspecific crossing of larch species damaged
by browsing of vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae Thomas) and the contents of ether extracts (EE) in their bark. The average survival ofLarix gmelini var.japonica Pilg. (L. gmelini)×L. gmelini (G×G) was highest, followed by the hybridL. gmelini×L. leptolepis Gordon (G×L). The families of the hybrid G×L, which is considered suitable for silviculture in Hokkaido, Japan, showed significant
differences in survival rates, suggesting that it is possible to produce improved varieties of the hybrid which are more resistant
to vole browsing. The EE contents of the bark were under strong hereditary control, and the rank of the EE content among the
various families hardly fluctuated between the location of the test fields. The correlation coefficient between the survival
rates and the EE contents was highly significant (r=0.89,n=24,p<0.01), indicating that the EE content in the bark may be used as a possible index of resistance or susceptibility to vole
browsing in larch plantations.

The conversion of anthropogenic into more natural, self-regenerating forests is one of the major objectives of forestry throughout
Europe. In this study, we present investigations on permanent plots with different silvicultural treatment in NE German pine
stands. Management of old-growth pine stands on acidic and nutrient-poor sandy sites differs in fencing, thinning, and planting
of certain tree species. The investigations were carried out on the community, population, and individual level of the pine
forest ecosystems. Thus, vegetation changes, size and height of tree populations, and height increment of tree individuals
were observed over a time span of 6 years. Special attention was paid to short-lived tree species such as, e.g., Frangula alnus and Sorbus aucuparia, as well as to Fagus sylvatica as one of the most typical forest tree species of Central Europe. Vegetation changes are interpreted as a consequence of
natural regeneration of formerly degraded forest sites, involving an increase in nutrient availability. High browsing pressure
can be considered as a key factor for the inhibition of tree seedlings and growth of saplings. Some Sorbus aucuparia individuals, however, succeeded in growing out of the browsing height also in unfenced stands. Few found specimens of Fagus sylvatica proved that this species is able to establish spontaneously on these relatively dry, acidic sites under continental climate
influence. Such natural regeneration processes, also including spontaneous rejuvenation of trees, can be integrated into silviculture
as passive forest conversion management. An active management like thinning of stands, planting of trees, and fencing can
accelerate forest conversion with regard to height growth and species number of trees. 相似文献

Species of Fusarium cause damping off of forest seedlings resulting in considerable losses and oftentimes fungicides are used to control the disease. Such chemicals may be detrimental to the environment. Protection of forest seedlings against this disease must be focused on integrated management for in which biological control is one of the most important tools. Mycorrhizal fungi may provide protection against pathogen invasion of seedlings. In this study, the interactions between the mycorrhizal fungi Boletus edulis, Rhizopogon roseolus, Laccaria laccata and Lactarius deliciosus and damping off pathogens (Fusarium oxysporum and F. moniliforme) were investigated in vitro and mechanisms involved in the protection of damping off in P. nigra seedlings are also discussed. The effect of filtrates from mycorrhizal species on spore germination of F. oxysporum varied throughout the tests. At the end of the assay, the inhibitory effect only could be observed in the L.␣deliciosus treatment. None of the filtrates reduced spore germination in F. moniliforme. Finally, three of the four mycorrhizal species grown for 2 months in the substrate, L. laccata, L.␣deliciosus and B. edulis, increased the survival of Fusarium inoculated P.␣nigra seedlings. 相似文献
