The Shenandoah National Park: Fish in Sensitive Habitats (SNP:FISH) project is a response to declining pH and acid neutralizing capacity in Shenandoah National Park (SNP) streams. SNP receives more atmospheric sulfate than any other USA national park, and pH had decreased to the point where early negative effects on fish were expected. SNP provides the opportunity to study the early stages of acidification effects on fish. Three different classes of geological formations yield streams with low-ANC (0 Eq/L), intermediate-ANC (60–100 Eq/L) or high-ANC (150–200 Eq/L) waters in SNP. This allows a comparison of responses across a water quality gradient in a small geographic area receiving similar deposition. Both chronic and episodic acidification occur in SNP streams. Biological effects are apparent in fish species richness, population density, condition factor, age, size, and bioassay survival. A primary project objective was to provide the necessary data for development and testing models for forecasting changes in fish communities resulting from changes in stream chemistry. Monitored variables include several which are predictive of acidification effects on SNP fish communities.  相似文献

The critical load concept is now accepted throughout Europe as a means of estimating the sensitivity of key components of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to atmospheric inputs of sulphur (S) and nitrogen (N). Current UK freshwater maps, based on steady-state water chemistry, are derived using a critical acid neutralising capacity (ANCLIM) value of zero eql–1, which is based on the probability of occurrence of salmonid fish in lakes. In practice most acidification damage to salmonid fish occurs in nursery streams at the emergence and first feeding stages. In general a clear relationship exists between salmon (Salmo salar L.) and trout (S. trutta L.) densities in Scottish streams and ANC values. However, differences between sites depend on which ANC value is used (eg maximum, minimum or mean). By contrast, when the exceedance of critical loads is compared with salmonid densities the relationship is less clear because many exceeded sites have good salmonid densities. Many of these latter sites are found in north-west Scotland where sea-salt inputs are high and ANC is usually greater than zero eql–1, although diatom-based studies indicated slight acidification of these waters, with a point of change in diatom flora close to ANC=20 eql–1. These false exceedances are probably due to preferential adsorption of acidic SO4 deposition which results in an overestimate of exceedance values. All sites with a mean ANC 0 are fishless but some sites with negative minimum ANC values had normal salmonid densities. Consequently a mean ANCLIM value of zero in the critical load equations for UK freshwaters appears to be too low to protect salmonid stocks. Values between 20–50 eql–1 represent a more realistic range if prevention of long term damage to salmonid stocks is to be achieved.  相似文献

The degree to which floating aquatic plants concentrate Se in tissues was determined for four species grown in solutions containing various levels of Se. Results of this greenhouse study showed that all four plant species, Azolla caroliniana, Eichhornia crassipes, Salvinia rotundi folia, and Lemna minor absorbed Se quickly upon exposure to Se in water as concentrated as 2.5 g Se mL–1, and attained maximum tissue concentrations within 1 to 2 weeks. Azolla absorbed Se to the highest tissue concentration (about 1000 g Se g–1 dry matter) from the 2.5 g Se mL–1 solution, followed by Salvinia (700 g Se g–1), Lemna (500 g Se g–1),and Eichhornia (300 g Se g–1). Plant growth appeared unaffected by solution Se concentrations lower than about 1.25 g mL–1. These results indicate potential for rapid Se movement from water into aquatic food chains, and for use of aquatic plants for Se removal in wastewater treatment systems.  相似文献

As part of the Shenandoah National Park: Fish in Sensitive Habitats (SNP:FISH) project, the blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus) was utilized as an indicator species to assess the susceptibility of the ichthyofaunal community of Shenandoah National Park (USA) to acidification. Water chemistry (ANC, conductivity, pH, and concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl, NO3 , SO4 2–, and SiO2) was sampled every three months over the course of 3 1/4 years which represents the probable maximum lifetime of R atratulus. Condition factors (K=[g/mm3]*106) were calculated for samples of fish (age class 2+ yr; n=370) from nine montane, second/third order streams representing a range of ANCs. A principle components regression was performed on factor scores from a principle components analysis of the water chemistry variables and fish condition factor. Two factors, one associated with stream water ANC and ion concentrations, and another associated with SO4 2– concentration, collectively explained 84% of the variance in condition factor. The influence of variables other than water chemistry upon R atratulus K is addressed. The results show that environmental chemistry is highly associated with the K of R atratulus.  相似文献

High-elevation red spruce-Fraser fir forests in the Southern Appalachian mountains: 1) receive among the highest rates of atmospheric deposition measured in North America, 2) contain old-growth forests, 3) have shown declines in forest health, 4) have sustained high insect-caused fir mortality, and 5) contain poorly buffered soils and stream systems. High rates of nitrogen and sulphur deposition (1900 and 2200 Eq·ha–1·yr–1, respectively) are dominated by dry and cloud deposition processes. Large leaching fluxes of nitrate-nitrogen (100–1400 Eq·ha–1·yr–1) occur within the soil profile. We have expanded the study to the watershed scale with monitoring of: precipitation, throughfall, stream hydrology, and stream chemistry. Two streamlets drain the 17.4 ha Noland Divide Watershed (1676–1920m) located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A network of 50 20x20 m plots is being used to assess stand structure, biomass, and soil nutrient pools. Nitrate is the predominant anion in the streamlets (weighted concentrations: 47 and 54 eq·L–1 NO3 ; 31 and 43 eq·L–1 SO4 2–). Watershed nitrate export is extremely high (1000 Eq·ha–1 yr–1), facilitating significant base cation exports. Stream acid neutralizing capacity values are extremely low (–10 to 20 eq·L–1) and episodic acidifications (pH declines of a full unit in days or weeks time) occur. Annual streamwater sulfate export is on the order of 770 Eq·ha–1yr–1 or about one-third of total annual inputs, indicating there is net watershed sulfate retention. The system is highly nitrogen saturated (Stage 2, Stoddard, 1994) and this condition promotes both chronic and episodic stream acidification.  相似文献

Summary Soil mesofauna (sensu Ghilarov, i.e., larger than 1 mm) was sampled from under four shrub species (Lygos raetam, Thymelaea hirsuta, Lycium shawii, and Josonia candicans) growing on the littoral oolitic sand dunes at Gharbaniat, 53 km W of Alexandria, Egypt, for a period of more than 30 months, spanning 3 years. Population density (PD) was calculated in relation to area of shrub canopy. Seasons were considered, according to the prevailing climatic conditions as well as to earlier physiological studies on the animals concerned, as: four winter months, four summer months and two months for each of the transitional seasons spring and autumn. The PD values obtained for each season thus defined were combined for the 41 taxa that were sampled. The table of these data was treated by correspondence analysis (CA) and ascending hierarchic classification (AHC), by the Roux DATA-VISION programme (suitable for Apple). Results from such treatment show that fauna as related to shrub species are differentiated along the first factorial axis, while as related to seasons they are differentiated along the second axis. Taxa common to all shrubs and to all seasons are centrally placed and cause some confusion in the resolution. Summer taxa are more distantly placed than those related to the other three seasons. Fauna under Lygos is richer, more diverse, and more complementary as regards trophic levels (with predators), and could probably be the source for replenishing the fauna of the other shrubs at all seasons. Summary Eight commercial Israeli spring wheat cultivars (six Triticum aestivum and two T. turgidum) grown with 40 and 120 kg N/ha were tested for responses to inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense. At the low level of N fertilization (40 kg/ha), five cultivars showed significant increases in plant dry weight measured at the milky ripe stage; however, by maturation only the cultivar Miriam showed a significant increase in grain yield. Two cultivars, which had shown a positive inoculation effect at the earlier stages, had a significant decrease in grain yield. No significant effect of inoculation was found at the high N level. To confirm those results, four wheat (T. aestivum) cultivars were tested separately over 4 years in 4 different locations under varying N levels. Only Miriam showed a consistently positive effect of Azospirillum inoculation on grain yield. Inoculation increased the number of roots per plant on Miriam compared with uninoculated plants. This effect was found at all N levels. Nutrient (N, P and K) accumulation and number of fertile tillers per unit area were also enhanced by Azospirillum, but these parameters were greatly affected by the level of applied N. It is suggested that the positive response of the spring wheat cultivar Miriam to Azospirillum inoculation is due to its capacity to escape water stresses at the end of the growth season.  相似文献

Summary -(Isoxazolin-5-on-2-yl)-alanine (IA), a heterocyclic non-protein amino acid from root extracts and root exudates of pea seedlings, acts as a potent growth inhibitor of several eukaryotic organisms, including yeasts, phytopathogenic fungi, unicellular green algae, and higher plants. The antibiotic effect on baker's yeast was reversed by l-methionine, l-cysteine, and l-homocysteine. Phytopathogenic fungi such as Botrytis cinerea, Pythium ultimum, and Rhizoctonia solani grown on agar containing IA were inhibited in the growth of mycelia or in the production of sclerotia. In contrast, no significant inhibition of either Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria was observed. Rhizobium leguminosarum, the compatible microsymbiont of Pisum spp., and Rhizobium meliloti were able to tolerate up to 2.9 mM IA (500 ppm) without any effect on the growth rate. Bradyrhizobium japonicum even gave a positive chemotactic response to IA. The ecological significance of IA as a preformed plant protectant during the seedling stage of Pisum spp. and other IA-containing legumes is discussed.  相似文献

The surface ozone (O3) data show an increase by 2.6 % per year during the period 1982–1994 at the rural site of Lithuania. WHO (World Health Organization), UN-ECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), CES (Commission of the European Communities) guideline values for the protection of vegetation from adverse effects are exceeded during the growing season at the Preila coastal station. Ozone exposures for different concentration threshold are estimated during daylight hours in April-September. These values above 60 g/m3 varied between 10 000 and 43 000 (g/m3) ·h, above 80 g/m3 — between 1700 and 15 000 (g/m3) ·h, above 100 g/m3 — between 130 and 3700 (g/m3) ·h during separate years. Maximum hourly ozone values were observed from 116 to 228 g/m3 during this period.  相似文献

The SO2 emissions from the Kola Peninsula in Arctic Russia (totalling around 600 Gg(SO2) yr–1 at the beginning of the 1990s) produce an atmospheric SO2 concentration gradient to the northernmost Europe. This gradient covers the range from >50 g m–3 in the vicinity of the sources to 1 g m–3 in Finnish Lapland. In the present study, the measured sulphur concentrations in Scots pine needles were compared with the estimated distribution of atmospheric SO2. The total sulphur concentrations in the needles ranged from 741 to 2017 mg kg–1. Strongly elevated concentrations (> 1200 mg kg–1) were found within 40 km from the smelters corresponding to an area where the annual mean atmospheric SO2 concentration exceeded 10 g m–3. The foliar sulphur concentrations (total, organic and inorganic) show a high correlation with the estimated mean SO2 concentration distribution in the air. Consequently the foliar sulphur concentrations reflected the atmospheric sulphur load well. The data presented here show that uptake via stomata is an important deposition pathway also in the arctic conditions with a short growing season.  相似文献

Seed protein profiles by SDS-PAGE were studied in 72 accessions ofSolanum melongena L. and its related taxa in subgenusLeptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter. Comparisons based onJaccard's similarity and UPGMA clustering revealed interrelationships broadly inconformity with the conventional taxonomic treatments. Thus,S. viarum Dunal (sectionAcanthophora Dunal), S.torvum Swartz (section Torva Nees) andS. sisymbriifolium Lam. (sectionCryptocarpum Dunal) were located on separate branches ofthe dendrogram while all taxa of section Melongena Dunal,except S. macrocarpon Dunal, wereclustered closer together. S.melongena, incanum and insanum,all members of the eggplant complex, were revealed to bear very high similaritywith each other. Most of their accessions had identical band patterns supportingthe contention that these represent an interbreeding complex with limitedgenetic differentiation.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung 49 röntgeninduzierte Mutanten der Wintergerstensorten Friedrichswerther Berg, Peragis Mittelfrühe II, Kleinwanzlebener 12 und Mahndorfer werden morphologisch beschrieben. Sie werden unter der Rangstufe Linie (auf dem gleichen Rang wie die Sorte), zusammengefaßt nach Hauptmerkmalen, in das morphologische System eingeordnet. Sie konnten 10 verschiedenen Varietäten der convar.hexastichon (L.) Alef. s. l. zugeordnet werden. Eine dieser Varietäten (var.semiaristatum, p. 240) stellt eine neue Merkmalskombination dar und wird beschrieben.Soweit bisher Kreuzungsanalysen vorliegen, werden Angaben über die Vererbung des Hauptmerkmals bei den einzelnen Mutanten gemacht; in der Regel liegen monogen rezessive Erbgänge vor. Drei verschiedene Ausprägungsgrade des Hauptmerkmals Grannen kurz und brüchig konnten auf ebenso viele Glieder einer Serie multipler Allele zurückgeführt werden (S. 235 ff). Summary The efficiency of N use in flooded rice is usually low, chiefly due to gaseous losses. Emission of CH4, a gas implicated in global warming, can also be substantial in flooded rice. In a greenhouse study, the nitrification inhibitor encapsulated calcium carbide (a slow-release source of acetylene) was added with 75, 150, and 225 mg of 75 atom % 15N urea-N to flooded pots containing 18-day-old rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants. Urea treatments without calcium carbide were included as controls. After the application of encapsulated calcium carbide, 3.6 g N2, 12.4 g N2O-N, and 3.6 mg CH4 were emitted per pot in 30 days. Without calcium carbide, 3.0 mg N2, 22.8 g N2O-N, and 39.0 mg CH4 per pot were emitted during the same period. The rate of N added had a positive effect on N2 and N2O emissions, but the effect on CH4 emissions varied with time. Carbon dioxide emissions were lower with encapsulated calcium carbide than without. The use of encapsulated calcium carbide appears effective in eliminating N2 losses, and in minimizing emissions of the greenhouse gases N2O and CH4 in flooded rice.  相似文献

Summary Ergosta-5,7,22-tri-3-enol (ergosterol) was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in roots of berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum L., cv. Landsorte) and sweet corn (Zea mays L., cv. Honeycomb-F1) infected with the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus Glomus intraradices. The fungal-derived compound ergosterol was determined quantitatively in root extracts using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. The concentrations of ergosterol in VAM-infected roots reached 72 g-1 dry material in berseem and 52 g-1 in sweet corn after 80 days of growth, whereas concentrations in non-infected roots remained below 8 g-1 dry weight. Additionally, phytosterols such as -sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol were detected in both infected and non-infected roots. Ergosterol, as a characteristic fungal substance, is proposed as an indicator of fungal biomass in the early stages of VAM infection.  相似文献

The Lysina catchment in the Czech Republic was studied to investigate the biogeochemical response of Al to high loadings of acidic deposition. The catchment supports Norway spruce plantations and is underlain by granite and podzolic soil. Atmospheric deposition to the site was characterized by high H+ and SO4 2– fluxes in throughfall. The volume-weighted average concentration of total Al (Alt) was 28 mol L–1 in the O horizon soil solution. About 50% of Alt in the O horizon was in the form of potentially-toxic inorganic monomeric Al (Ali). In the E horizon, Alt increased to 71 mol L–1, and Ali comprised 80% of Alt. The concentration of Alt (120 mol L–1) and the fraction of Ali (85%) increased in the lower mineral soil due to increases in Ali and decreases in organic monomeric Al (Alo). Shallow ground water was less acidic and had lower Alt concentration (29 mol L–1). The volume-weighted average concentration of Alt was extremely high in stream water (60 mol L–1) with Ali accounting for about 60% of Alt. The major species of Ali in stream water were fluorocomplexes (Al-F) and aquo Al3+. Soil solutions in the root zone were undersaturated with respect to all Al-bearing mineral phases. However, stream water exhibited Ali concentrations close to solubility with jurbanite. Acidic waters and elevated Al concentrations reflected the limited supply of basic cations on the soil exchange complex and slow weathering, which was unable to neutralize atmospheric inputs of strong acids.  相似文献

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to evaluatethe levels and patterns of genetic diversity in ten Elymusalaskanus populations, which were collected from Canada, USA,Greenland and Russia. Ten arbitrarily chosen decamer primers were used in thisstudy. The results revealed high levels of variation. The mean number of allelesper locus (Ap) was 1.5, ranging from 1.4 to 1.6, the meanpercent of polymorphic loci (Pp) was 49.5%, ranging from35.1% to 64.9%, and the mean gene diversity (Hep) was0.162, varying from 0.142 to 0.262. The total variation wasH T = 0.403. When partitioned(G ST), 60% of the total variation was foundamong the populations. Although the genetic diversity values obtained with RAPDsare much higher than for allozymes, they are similar regarding how the geneticvariation is distributed among populations. In addition, a similar geneticpattern of population differentiation, where populations from Greenland andthe USA (violaceus and latiglumis)were clearly separated from the others (hyperarcticus,komarovii and sajanensis), wasrevealed by both the cluster and principal coordinates analyses.  相似文献

Auf der Grundlage der Gliederungsübersichten von Alefeld, Körnicke, Ascherson und Graebner, Malzev, Mordvinkina und Stanton wird ein System vorgeschlagen, in dem zwei Convarietäten und 19 Varietäten unterschieden werden.

The 13C and 15N values of sugarcane plant tissues, decomposing harvest residues, soil and the casts and body tissues of the earthwormPontoscolex corethrurus were determined. Little variation in 13C values was found between plant parts. The 13C values of the decomposing harvest residues declined and became more variable after 148 days of exposure in the field. In the decomposing residues, 13C values of the neutral detergent fibre fraction were similar to those of the whole tissues while those of the proximate lignin were more negative. The 15N values of the residues also declined over time after a short initial delay.P. corethrurus populations are more intimately associated with the roots of sugarcane than with the bulk soil. Tissue 13C values suggest that the earthworm diet is similar to or more enriched in13C than sugarcane tissues and is substantially more enriched than the soil C. Earthworm tissues have similar levels of15N enrichment to both the soil and plant tissues. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that this earthworm derives much of its assimilated C relatively directly from organic matter associated with the roots and decomposing harvest residues.  相似文献
