CASE HISTORY: Veterinarians from the Investigation and Diagnostic Centre (IDC), Wallaceville, New Zealand, investigated a novel vesicular disease in a 397-cow dairy herd, characterised by erosive stomatitis. CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: The investigation commenced with a report of erosive stomatitis in four dairy cows. The herd was examined that day and 30/397 (8%) adult cows were found to be affected. Two weeks later, the oral cavity of 180 cows from one management group were re-examined, and it was estimated that 80% of this group had healing erosive lesions. During the course of the investigation, intact vesicles were observed on the muzzle of two affected animals. None of the affected animals was systemically ill and there was no decrease in milk production. DIAGNOSIS: No infectious aetiological agent was detected using virus isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), electron microscopy (EM) and serological tests, for any exotic infectious vesicular disease or any endemic cause of vesicular disease. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lesions of erosive stomatitis occurring in cattle must be differentiated from vesicular disease during exotic disease investigations.  相似文献

Neosporosis-like abortions in a herd of dairy cattle   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Twenty-nine cows from a 240-cow drylot Holstein dairy in north-central New Mexico aborted over a period of approximately 5 months. Nine aborted fetuses were necropsied, and all but 1 of the fetuses were between 5 and 7 months of gestation. Microscopic examination of fetal tissues revealed focal necrotizing encephalitis and nonsuppurative myocarditis in 7 of the 9 fetuses. Additional lesions observed in some fetuses were focal hepatic necrosis, nonsuppurative myositis, focal necrotizing placentitis, focal nonsuppurative pneumonia, and focal nonsuppurative nephritis. A few groups of Neospora caninum-like protozoan organisms were observed adjacent to necrotic foci in the brain of 2 fetuses and in the kidney of a third fetus. No other cause of abortion was detected.  相似文献

Two postparturient beef cows in a herd of 30 developed acute enteritis, with pyrexia and bloody diarrhea containing intestinal casts. Salmonella typhimurium phage type 66 was isolated from feces of both animals; both recovered after treatment with tetracycline. A third cow had died without treatment after showing similar signs.  相似文献

Over a 44-day period, 4 of 5 affected calves in a 170-head herd of beef cattle died after exhibiting clinical signs of lethargy, ataxia, anorexia, and diarrhea. Histopathological examination of tissues and toxicological analysis of a suspicious powder discovered in the pasture confirmed arsenic trioxide toxicosis.  相似文献

Five cows in a herd of 15 cattle that had just been turned out onto lush pasture after having over-wintered on poor quality hay died suddenly. Biochemical profiles collected from the cadavers revealed reduced serum levels of magnesium, urea, and beta-hydroxybutycate. Classical grass tetany (hypomagnesemia) was diagnosed on postmortem examination.  相似文献

A 6-month-old crossbred calf was examined as representative of a herd of calves experiencing dyspnea and death, with few other clinical signs of illness. Physical examination of the calf identified pleural and peritoneal effusion and poor body condition. The calf did not respond to supportive treatment, and necropsy of it and another calf from the herd identified congestive heart failure as the cause of death. Gossypol toxicosis was the cause of congestive heart failure in this herd; the source of the toxin was a cottonseed meal and cottonseed hull ration fed by the owner.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the high rate of seroconversion for Neospora caninum in a dairy herd. Forty-five of 95 (47%) of the seronegative animals seroconverted within a period of 6 months. Seropositive animals were not equally distributed among age-groups. A high seroprevalence age-group of 8-30 months was housed together during a period of 4 months, indicating a point source infection within this period. A lack of association between the serological status of daughters and mothers also indicated horizontal transmission of the infection. Low avidity indices in the seroconverted animals confirmed a recent infection in this herd. However, there was no increased abortion rate in connection with the seroconversion, which indicates that mass seroconversions in dairy herds may remain unnoticed. There was circumstantial evidence that the farm dog played a role in the transmission of the infection to the cattle. However, also evidence was found for an unexplained ongoing horizontal transmission after the initial point source exposure.  相似文献

Over a 12-day period, 13 animals in a herd of 110 beef cattle developed ataxia with profound muscle fasciculations progressing to recumbency. Twelve animals (5 adults and 7 calves from 8-10 months of age) died, and 1 cow was euthanized. Hemorrhagic diarrhea occurred in some, but not all, animals. The onset of clinical signs was at least 12 hours after the cattle had gained access to contents of old buildings used for storage, and the majority of deaths occurred within 24 to 48 hours after the onset of clinical signs. Approximately 9 kg of unidentified pellets were found strewn in the barn area where the cattle had been. Autolysis considered more severe than expected for the postmortem interval, suggestive of high body temperature before death, and congestion of body tissues were the only significant findings detected in the cow that was euthanized and submitted for necropsy examination. The clinical history and lack of postmortem lesions were most consistent with toxicity. A toxic level of arsenic (6.18 ppm) was detected in the kidney, and metaldehyde was detected in the liver. The pellets were analyzed and found to contain both arsenic and metaldehyde, consistent with a discontinued molluscicidal product.  相似文献

Forty beef cows were reported to show signs of abdominal pain and discomfort over a period of 1 wk. Two of the affected animals died and on postmortem examination were found to be impacted with sand in their abomasum and small intestines. Sand-laden barley silage was found to be the cause of these impactions.  相似文献

A herd consumed approximately 20 kg onions/cow/day for 6 weeks. Five cows died and two aborted. Onion toxicosis results in methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia. These changes can cause secondary organ damage and death, if enough onions are consumed.  相似文献
