SUMMARY Plasma biochemical values were measured in 14 horses, before a 160 km endurance ride, immediately after 85 km, immediately after 160 km, after 30 min recovery period and the day after the ride. For statistical analysis, a group of 7 horses that completed the ride at a mean speed of 234 metres per min (m/min) (Fast Group) was compared with 7 horses that completed the ride at a mean speed of 144 m/min (Slow Group). Estimations were made of sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, glucose, creatinine, urea, bilirubin, iron, total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphate, cholesterol, alkaline phosphate, gammaglutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, a hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, asparate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, Cortisol and insulin. Disturbances in boichemical values associated with endurance exercise reflected dehydration, hepatic dysfunction, reduced renal function and muscle damage. The faster the speed of exercise, the greater was the stress as reflected by Cortisol values. The Fast Group of horses also demonstrated lower glucose and higher CK and LD values than the Stow Group of horses. However, biochemical values the day after the ride were similar to values before the ride. 相似文献

To determine whether a clinical examination was adequate to assess the fitness of horses in an endurance ride, and to characterise the relationship between a clinical assessment of the horse's fitness and its blood biochemistry, 23 horses were monitored before, during and after an 87 to 100 km endurance ride. Blood samples were taken before the ride, at three checkpoints on the ride, immediately after the ride and one day later for the determination of packed cell volume, total protein, lactate, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, creatine phosphokinase, aspartate aminotransferase and plasma electrolytes. Heart rate measurements appeared to be a reliable indicator of the metabolic status of endurance horses suggesting that veterinary examinations according to the official Fédération Equestre Internationale rules are adequate to protect the health and welfare of horses competing in endurance races. 相似文献

Blood samples were taken from 15 horses before and after a 50-mile ride to examine the changes occurring in some biochemical constituents. There was a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in plasma potassium, calcium and magnesium concentrations and a rise in inorganic phosphate but there was no alteration in plasma sodium, chloride or protein levels or change in haematocrit. After the ride there was a highly significant (P less than 0.01) fall in blood glucose corresponding with increased lipolysis and a rise in plasma free fatty acids (P less than 0.001) and glycerol (P less than 0.001). There was a modest increase in blood lactate and a rise in plasma creatine phosphokinase. The results of this preliminary investigation are discussed in relation to the problem of exhaustion in horses during endurance rides. 相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of draught load exercise on calcium (Ca) homeostasis in young horses. Five 2-year-old untrained Standardbred horses were studied in a 4-month training programme. All exercise workouts were performed on a treadmill at a 6% incline and with a constant draught load of 40 kg (0.44 kN). The training programme started with a standardized exercise test (SET 1; six incremental steps of 5 min duration each, first step 1.38 m/s, stepwise increase by 0.56 m/s). A training programme was then initiated which consisted of low-speed exercise sessions (LSE; constant velocity at 1.67 m/s for 60 min, 48 training sessions in total). After the 16th and 48th LSE sessions, SETs (SET 2: middle of training period, SET 3: finishing training period) were performed again under the identical test protocol of SET 1. Blood samples for blood lactate, plasma total Ca, blood ionized calcium (Ca(2+)), blood pH, plasma inorganic phosphorus (P(i)) and plasma intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) were collected before, during and after SETs, and before and after the first, 16th, 32nd and 48th LSE sessions. During SETs there was a decrease in ionized Ca(2+) and a rise in lactate, P(i) and intact PTH. The LSEs resulted in an increase in pH and P(i), whereas lactate, ionized Ca(2+), total Ca and intact PTH were not affected. No changes in Ca metabolism were detected in the course of training. Results of this study suggest that the type of exercise influences Ca homeostasis and intact PTH response, but that these effects are not influenced in the course of the training period. 相似文献

The effects of prolonged strenuous exercise on arterial and venous oxygen tension, carbon dioxide tension, pH, bicarbonate, standard bicarbonate, base excess, haemoglobin, packed cell volume and total plasma protein were studied in 36 horses during a 100 km endurance ride. There were significant changes in many parameters when pre-ride values were compared with both mid-ride and end of ride values. The prominent changes were the development of dehydration and a metabolic alkalosis. At the mid-ride sampling time those horses with higher heart rates had a greater degree of metabolic alkalosis than those with lower heart rates. The first 4 horses in the race completed the ride with speeds between 322-330 m/min and demonstrated a metabolic acidosis. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in plasma ionized calcium (Ca2+) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations in horses competing in endurance rides. DESIGN: Longitudinal clinical study. ANIMALS: 28 horses. PROCEDURE: Venous blood samples were obtained from horses before and after racing 80 km. Plasma pH and concentrations of Ca2+, PTH, inorganic phosphorus, albumin, lactate, and magnesium were measured. RESULTS: Overall, a significant decrease in mean (+/- SD) plasma Ca2+ concentration (from 6.44 +/- 0.42 to 5.64 +/- 0.42 mg/dl) and a significant increase in plasma PTH concentration (from 49.9 +/- 30.1 to 148.1 +/- 183.0 pg/ml) were found after exercise. Exercise also resulted in significant increases in plasma inorganic phosphorus, albumin, and lactate concentrations. No changes in plasma magnesium concentration or pH were detected after exercise. Plasma PTH concentration was not increased after exercise in 8 horses; in these horses, plasma PTH concentration decreased from 58.2 +/- 26.3 to 27.4 +/- 22.4 pg/ml, although plasma Ca2+ concentration was also decreased. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Plasma Ca2+ concentration was decreased after racing for 80 km, compared with values obtained before racing. In most horses, an increase in plasma PTH concentration that was commensurate with the decrease in plasma Ca2+ was detected; however, some horses had decreased plasma PTH concentrations. 相似文献

Mammalian skeletal muscle expresses splice variants of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). Skeletal muscles have a metabolically heterogeneous population of myofibers, and fiber composition in equine skeletal muscle is correlated with athletic ability in endurance events. In this study, we investigated whether nNOS expression in equine skeletal muscle is related to fiber type and endurance training. Biopsy samples obtained from the gluteus medius of sedentary- (SH) and endurance-trained (TH) horses were examined for the electrophoretic mobility of myosin heavy chain (MHC) and NOS activity. Serial tissue cross-sections were stained for myosin ATPase and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) reductase, and also immunostained for nNOS. The gluteus medius of TH had higher levels of nNOS expression and activity when compared to muscle from SH. In SH, nNOS was restricted to the subsarcolemmal area while in TH nNOS was also present at cytoplasmic sites. A splice variant of nNOS was heterogeneously distributed among the different myofibers, its expression being higher in fast-oxidative-glycolytic type IIA fibers than in fast-glycolytic type IIX fibers and absent in slow-twitch type I fibers. Trained horses had a significantly higher relative content of type IIA fibers, a greater oxidative capacity, and a lower percentage of type IIX fibers when compared with SH. The differences in muscle fiber typing between the 2 groups of horses reflected alterations that probably resulted from the endurance-training program. Overall, these results show that nNOS is differentially expressed and localized in the gluteus medius according to the fiber type and the athletic conditioning of the horses. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine plasma endotoxin concentration in horses competing in a 48-, 83-, or 159-km endurance race and its importance with regard to physical, hematologic, or serum and plasma biochemical variables. ANIMAL: 3 horses. PROCEDURE: Weight and rectal temperature measurements and blood samples were obtained before, during, and after exercise. Blood samples were analyzed for plasma endotoxin concentration; serum antiendotoxin antibody titers; thromboxane B2 (TxB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha (PGF1alpha) concentrations; tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) activities; WBC, plasma protein, lactate, serum electrolyte, and calcium concentrations; PCV; and creatine kinase activity. RESULTS: Detection of plasma endotoxin increased during exercise for horses competing at all distances but occurred more frequently in the 48- and 83-km groups. Plasma lactate concentration was significantly greater when endotoxin was concurrently detected. Endotoxin in plasma was not significantly associated with success of race completion. Plasma TxB2 and PGF1alpha concentrations and serum IL-6 activity significantly increased with exercise. Horses that had an excellent fitness level (as perceived by their owners) had greater decreases in serum antiendotoxin antibody titers during exercise than did horses perceived as less fit. In horses with better finish times, TxB2 and PGF1alpha concentrations were significantly greater and TNFalpha activity was significantly less than that of slower horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Endotoxemia developed during endurance racing, but was significantly correlated with increased plasma lactate concentration and not with other variables indicative of endotoxemia. Plasma TxB2 and PGF1alpha concentrations and serum TNFalpha activity may be associated with performance success. 相似文献

This paper provides relevant information for veterinarians responsible for treatment of endurance horses, including a retrospective study of fractures in endurance horses presenting to one referral hospital and to treatment clinics at 3 different race venues. Treatment and case outcome were also noted. The information presented provides clinicians working with high level endurance horses increased awareness of common sites of fractures, of prefracture stress related bone injury within this population of athletes and guidelines in order to manage them more effectively. The most common fractures involve the metacarpo‐(tarso‐)phalangeal joint. Most distal limb fractures can be diagnosed radiographically, but magnetic resonance imaging or scintigraphy may be required in some cases. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare biodegradable magnesium phosphate cement (Mg-cement), calcium phosphate cement (Ca-cement), and no cement on bone repair, biocompatibility, and bone adhesive characteristics in vivo in horses. ANIMALS: 8 clinically normal adult horses. PROCEDURES: Triangular fragments (1-cm-long arms) were created by Y-shaped osteotomy of the second and fourth metatarsal bones (MTII and MTIV, respectively). Fragments were replaced in pairs to compare Mg-cement (MTII, n = 8; MTIV, 8) with Ca-cement (MTIV, 8) or with no cement (MTII, 8). Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed for 7 weeks, at which time osteotomy sites were harvested for computed tomographic measurement of bone density and callus amount, 3-point mechanical testing, and histologic evaluation of healing pattern and biodegradation. RESULTS: All horses tolerated the procedure without clinical problems. Radiographically, Mg-cement secured fragments significantly closer to parent bone, compared with Ca-cement or no treatment. Callus amount and bone remodeling and healing were significantly greater with Mg-cement, compared with Ca-cement or no cement. Biomechanical testing results and callus density among treatments were not significantly different. Significantly greater woven bone was observed adjacent to the Mg-cement without foreign body reaction, compared with Ca-cement or no cement. The Mg-cement was not fully degraded and was still adhered to the fragment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Both bone cements were biocompatible in horses, and Mg-cement may assist fracture repair by osteogenesis and fragment stabilization. Further studies are warranted on other applications and to define degradation characteristics. 相似文献

IntroductionThe objectives of this study were to describe the changes in clinical cardiovascular examination variables over a competition season in groups of competitive eventing and endurance horses and to compare these findings to non-competitive controls of the same breeds.AnimalsThis study included two eventing horses, 11 endurance horses, and 13 eventing and seven endurance control breed-matched horses.Materials and methodsCardiovascular examinations were performed before starting the competition season, in the middle and at the peak/end of the competition season. Examinations included auscultation of the heart; M-mode echocardiographic measurements and calculated values; left atrial, pulmonary artery, and aortic diameters; color flow Doppler; exercise electrocardiograms (ECG) measuring peak heart rates and quantifying premature complexes; and 24-h continuous ECGs quantifying premature complexes per hour.ResultsAuscultation, echocardiograms, arrhythmias during exercise, and 24-h continuous ECGs did not change significantly throughout the season (p > 0.05 for all variables).ConclusionCardiovascular examination variables of eventing and endurance horses throughout a competition season are reported here for the first time. Although the present study did not reveal significant changes, data should be interpreted carefully as only a small number of horses were examined. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate calcium balance and parathyroid gland function in healthy horses and horses with enterocolitis and compare results of an immunochemiluminometric assay (ICMA) with those of an immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) for determination of serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations in horses. ANIMALS: 64 horses with enterocolitis and 62 healthy horses. PROCEDURES: Blood and urine samples were collected for determination of serum total calcium, ionized calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+), phosphorus, BUN, total protein, creatinine, albumin, and PTH concentrations, venous blood gases, and fractional urinary clearance of calcium (FCa) and phosphorus (FP). Serum concentrations of PTH were measured in 40 horses by use of both the IRMA and ICMA. RESULTS: Most (48/64; 75%) horses with enterocolitis had decreased serum total calcium, Ca2+, and Mg2+ concentrations and increased phosphorus concentrations, compared with healthy horses. Serum PTH concentration was increased in most (36/51; 70.6%) horses with hypocalcemia. In addition, FCa was significantly decreased and FP significantly increased in horses with enterocolitis, compared with healthy horses. Results of ICMA were in agreement with results of IRMA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Enterocolitis in horses is often associated with hypocalcemia; 79.7% of affected horses had ionized hypocalcemia. Because FCa was low, it is unlikely that renal calcium loss was the cause of hypocalcemia. Serum PTH concentrations varied in horses with enterocolitis and concomitant hypocalcemia. However, we believe low PTH concentration in some hypocalcemic horses may be the result of impaired parathyroid gland function. 相似文献

Renal calcium and magnesium handling was studied in rats with chronic thyroid hormone deficiency or excess, hyperthyroidism. Mean kidney weight of the thyroid deficient rats was 42% of age matched, euthyroid and hyperthyroid animals and glomerular filtration rate was 71% of normal. Fractional sodium excretion was consistently elevated in thyroid deficient rats (0.26%) as compared to euthyroid (0.07%) and hyperthyroid animals (0.07%). Urinary calcium excretion (0.39%) was also elevated and parallel to sodium excretion in thyroid deficiency. Despite this renal leak of sodium and calcium, thyroid deficient animals conserved magnesium much more efficiently than either euthyroid or hyperthyroid rats (5.7% vs 17.4% respectively). Plasma magnesium concentration was elevated by acute MgCl2 infusions to determine the reabsorptive capacity of magnesium. Thyroid deficient rats reabsorbed 15-30% more of the filtered magnesium at any given plasma concentration. Although these effects on electrolyte reabsorption are modest compared to the hemodynamic alterations, the data suggest that thyroid hormone has a direct effect on the tubule which if chronically absent results in subtle sodium and calcium wasting and renal retention of magnesium. Administration of thyroid hormone to euthyroid or thyroid deficient rats twenty-four hours prior to experimentation had no effect on calcium and magnesium handling. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The effect of homozygosity (measured by inbreeding coefficient) on the concentration of serum Ca and Mg ions as well as Mg ions concentrations in whole blood and bone tissue Mg and Ca content was studied. Wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Erxleben) were crossbred with albino outbred rats (Ipf:RIZ). F]-hybrids constituted the control group (0% of inbred). Using full-sibs mating, rats of 50% and 91% of inbred were reproduced. Half of each group was exposed to physical stress (PS) involving 3 d starvation, 3 h swimming and ether anaesthesia (to collect blood for examination), the other half was given only ether anaesthesia (ES). A significant (p < 0,01) linear decrease was observed in the concentration of Ca and Mg ions in serum, of Mg and Ca ions in bone tissue due to homozygosity increase, and a quadratic decrease of Mg content in whole blood. A considerable effect of the sex on Ca and Mg ion concentrations in serum, in particular under the conditions of severe physical stress was observed as well. Physical stress differentiated significantly Mg ion content in whole blood and serum.

A survey was taken of dietary management and training schedules of 54 horses competing in two 160 km endurance races. A total of 52 owners, representing 54 horses, responded to a questionnaire distributed prior to the races. Diet and training schedules were compared between horses that successfully completed the races and those that were eliminated for metabolic reasons. Horses that completed the races were 11.5 +/- 4 years old, weighed 429 +/- 4.5 kg and were ridden 61 +/- 32 km a week when training. Feed intake was reported as "free choice hay or pasture" by 34 of the respondents. Dry matter (DM) hay intake in these horses was estimated to be 3% body weight (kg) minus the kg DM of grain fed, assuming a maximum intake. They were fed 12.3 +/- 2.3 kg feed per day consisting of 10 +/- 2.3 kg hay and 2.3 +/- 1.4 kg of grain. Most had free access to salt and were fed 1 +/- 1 vitamin/mineral supplement per day. Based on Nutritional Research Council (NRC) values for nutrient content of the reported feeds, diets contained 60 +/- 5% total digestible nutrients (TDN), 12 +/- 2% crude protein, 27 +/- 4% crude fiber, 0.72 +/- 0.4% calcium and 0.29 +/- 0.06% phosphorus. Maximum caloric intake was estimated to be 31.9 Mcal per day. Ratios of nutrients fed per kilometer trained were: kg TDN/km = .14 +/- .08, kg crude protein/km trained = .03 +/- .02, and kg crude fiber/km trained = .06 +/- .04.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Haemodynamic variables, with emphasis on right ventricular (RV) contractility, were measured in horses prior to, during and following anaesthesia with xylazine/ketamine. In an attempt to elicit mechanisms of anaesthetic-induced alteration of myocardial function, serum ionised and total calcium concentrations were also measured. Xylazine caused decreased cardiac function, including RV contractility, that was not reversed immediately by ketamine but was insignificant from pre-anaesthetic baseline by recovery (45 min following induction). Serum ionised and total calcium concentrations did not change. 相似文献
