The effect of tilmicosin on the incidence of clinical mastitis and subsequent lamb performance was studied in 9 sheep flocks in Ontario. Ewes were treated randomly with either tilmicosin or placebo approximately one month prior to lambing. Outcome was assessed by comparing rates of clinical mastitis, palpable udder abnormalities, and preweaning (50-day) lamb weights between the 2 treatment groups, while controlling for other important variables. Lambs raised by multiparous ewes treated with tilmicosin were significantly heavier than lambs from placebo-treated multiparous ewes at 50 days. Lambs from tilmicosin-treated ewes were on average 0.52 kg heavier than lambs in the placebo group. There was no difference between treatment groups in the weight of lambs from first parity ewes. Tilmicosin treatment resulted in a 43% decrease in palpable udder abnormalities. Incidence of clinical mastitis did not differ between experimental groups. The administration of tilmicosin prelambing, at the time of routine clostridial disease vaccination, may be a beneficial and convenient way to reduce mastitis infection and improve the preweaning gain of lambs.  相似文献

To determine growth performance during and after injection of recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpSt), crossbred Yorkshire gilts and barrows (n = 54/gender, 27 to 42 kg BW) were blocked by BW and gender (n = 3 blocks/gender). Within each block, three pigs/gender were assigned randomly to each of six pens/block. A diet containing 24.8% CP was fed ad libitum. During the live weight period of 30 to 110 kg, pigs either remained as controls (one pen/block) or were injected (i.m.) daily with rpSt (120 micrograms/kg BW) during either 30 to 60, 30 to 100, 30 to 110, 60 to 100 or 60 to 110 kg BW. Thus, three gilts and three barrows in each of three pens received each treatment. Pigs were slaughtered at either 60 kg BW (1 d after rpSt injection) or 110 kg BW (1 d, 10 d or 70 d after rpSt injection). Relative to controls, pigs injected with rpSt exhibited faster and more efficient growth during the injection period (P less than .05) but slower and less efficient growth during 10 d after cessation of injection (P less than .05). Carcasses of pigs slaughtered 1 d or 10 d after rpSt injection were leaner than controls (P less than .05), but among the pigs treated with rpSt, carcasses of pigs withdrawn from rpSt for 10 d contained more fat (P less than .05) and had a lower percentage of muscle (P less than .05) than carcasses of pigs withdrawn from rpSt for 1 d. Growth and carcass measurements were similar (P greater than .05) between controls and pigs killed 70 d after rpSt injection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Antibody responses to a commercial avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) vaccine administered by different routes were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Responses to single doses of vaccine administered by the ocular route to 10% of a flock were comparable with those obtained when all birds received a single dose in the drinking water. However, ocular vaccination of 5% of the flock resulted in significantly lower responses than those obtained when 10% were vaccinated. Maternal antibody was shown by the ELISA to persist in chickens from vaccinated flocks for up to 21 days after hatching. Day-old chickens with serum absorbances of < 0.3 at 492 nm, as determined by the ELISA, were shown to be susceptible to intracerebral challenge with the neurotropic Van Roekel strain of AEV.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to 1) assess the effectiveness of the California mastitis test (CMT) relative to direct microscopic somatic cell count (DMSCC) and(or) somatic cell count (SCC) procedures for detecting subclinical mastitis in ewes, 2) determine the incidence of subclinical mastitis based on repeated or single sample measures and organisms associated with the inflammation, and 3) assess the relationship between milk quality measures and lamb performance. The relationship between DMSCC and SCC scores was significant (P less than .01); 90% of the variation in DMSCC scores was accounted for by SCC scores. In contrast, CMT scores accounted for only 26% of the variation in DMSCC and 30 to 34% of the variation in SCC scores. Incidence of inflammation varied from 17 to 50% of ewes tested, depending on the study and the method of assessment. Staphylococcus species were cultured from 14/41 samples tested, with cultures of Streptococcus species (3/41) and Micrococcus species (1/41) also present. The effect of subclinical mastitis in ewes on lamb performance was minimal when assessed by regressing lamb weights on subclinical mastitis and milk quality scores. In conclusion, growth performance of lambs in a management system where they had access to supplemental feed was not influenced by the quality of milk produced by ewes, or by the degree of subclinical mastitic inflammation present when they suckled.  相似文献

To alleviate the need for daily injection of porcine somatotropin (pST), a sustained-release implant (pSTSR) was devised that continuously delivers a daily dose of 2 mg of pST for 42 d. Ninety-six white composite (Large White x Landrace) finishing barrows (83.6 +/- 1.2 kg BW) were assigned to receive zero or two pSTSR implants (4 mg pST/d) and to consume one of six diets differing in total Lys concentration (0.29, 0.52, 0.75, 0.98, 1.21, or 1.44%, as-fed basis). Diets were formulated to be isocaloric and based on the ideal protein concept. Pigs were housed individually, allowed ad libitum access to feed and water, and slaughtered at 112 kg of BW. The pSTSR affected neither ADG (P = 0.88) nor 10th rib LM area (LMA; P = 0.51), but it decreased (P < 0.01) ADFI, average backfat thickness, 10th rib fat depth, weights of leaf fat and ham fat, improved (P < 0.05) G:F, and increased (P < 0.01) weights of four trimmed lean cuts (T-cuts), and percentages of ham lean and bone. Increasing total Lys increased ADG (quadratic; P < 0.05) and ADFI (linear; P < 0.01). The G:F, plasma urea N concentrations (PUN), and T-cuts were affected by the interaction pSTSR x dietary Lys (P < 0.01). Without pSTSR, the G:F did not differ (P = 0.37) among pigs fed 0.52% and greater total Lys. With pSTSR, the G:F was less (P < 0.05) for pigs fed 0.52% than 0.98 and 1.44% total Lys. Increases in dietary total Lys resulted in increased PUN (P < 0.01), and incremental increases were less in pSTSR-implanted pigs. Maximal yield of T-cuts was at 0.98% dietary total Lys in nonimplanted pigs and 1.21% total Lys in pSTSR-implanted pigs. Estimates of total Lys requirements of pigs without and with pSTSR, respectively, were 0.52 and 0.86% for growth (ADG and G:F) and 0.73 and 0.88% for lean production (LMA and T-cuts). Equivalent apparent ileal digestible Lys requirements of pigs without and with pSTSR, respectively, were 0.44 and 0.68% for growth, and 0.62 and 0.75% for lean production. With ADFI of 3.5 kg daily, an intake of approximately 26.1 g of total daily Lys (0.75%) or 22.4 g of apparent ileal digestible Lys is needed to maximize lean production in finishing barrows receiving 4 mg pST/d via sustained-release implant.  相似文献

The immune responses of 26 Angus-Hereford fetuses and neonates to Escherichia coli O26:K60:NM were studied after bacterin or saline solution was injected (in utero) into the amniotic fluid. Calves were euthanatized at birth or were orally revaccinated; some were challenge exposed with live organisms. The hemolytic plaque assay was used to determine the presence of cells producing immunoglobulins M, G1, and G2 (IgM, IgG1, and IgG2) in 4 segments of the small intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, and spleen. The passive hemagglutinin activity of intestinal washings was also determined. Anti-O26 passive hemagglutinin activity in the intestinal washings of principal calves was greater than in that of control calves, but in a given segment of the small intestine, usually this activity was relatively small and less consistent than the plaque-forming response. Greater numbers of plaque-forming cells were observed in the small intestine of 14 of the 15 principal calves when compared with the control calves tested.  相似文献

Beef cattle consuming bermudagrass hay were not supplemented or received a limited amount of ground corn alone or with a mix of protein meals to determine influences of concentrate supplementation on digestion and performance when the ionophore lasalocid (200 mg daily) was given. With limited feed intake, supplement treatment did not change the acetate to propionate shift in beef cows occurring with lasalocid (P < 0.06). Lasalocid did not affect sites of digestion of organic matter or nitrogen with any supplement treatment. However, lasalocid decreased (P < 0.10) ruminal digestion of neutral and acid detergent fibre. Live-weight gain by growing beef calves ingesting bermudagrass hay ad libitum was higher (P < 0.05) with than without supplementation and tended (P < 0.12) to be greater for corn plus protein meals than for corn alone. Lasalocid did not affect or interact with supplement treatment in feed intake or live-weight gain of heifers (236 kg; no growth stimulant) or steers (237 kg; treated with 200 mg progesterone and 20 mg estradiol benzoate). Lasalocid at 200 mg daily did not improve digestion characteristics or influence performance by beef cattle consuming a Basal diet of bermudagrass hay. Further, effects of lasalocid were not modulated by supplementation with concentrate, concentrate type or sex or growth stimulant usage.  相似文献

Four experiments using 580 barrows and 580 gilts (Study 1) and seven experiments using 500 barrows and 500 gilts (Study 2) were conducted at various geographical locations in the United States to determine the dose response of a pelleted form of porcine somatotropin (pST) relative to ADG, feed/gain (F/G), and percentage of carcass protein. Average initial weights for Studies 1 and 2 were 67.6 and 72.6 kg, respectively, and four pigs/pen were slaughtered when they achieved weights of 106.5 to 111.0 kg. In Study 1, pigs were implanted subcutaneously with pelleted pST doses of 0, 12, 24, 36, or 48 mg/wk and self-fed a corn-soybean meal diet containing 13.75% CP. Study 2 included two control groups self-fed a diet containing either 13.75 or 17% CP with added lysine. The pST-treated pigs were administered 12, 24, or 36 mg/wk, and all were offered the 17% CP diet. The pST treatments in Study 1 resulted in a linear reduction (P less than .05) in average daily feed intake (ADFI) and a quadratic (P less than .05) improvement in F/G and percentage of carcass protein. The pST treatments in Study 2 resulted in a linear reduction in ADFI (P less than .05), a linear improvement in F/G, and a quadratic increase in the percentage of carcass protein (P less than .05). Average daily gain was not affected in either study with this form of pST. The greatest increase in efficiency of lean gain was observed with the 36-mg dose for both Study 1 (9.4%) and Study 2 (10.8%). In Study 1, the force required to shear cores of the longissimus muscle was increased linearly with pST treatment (P less than .05). There was a similar linear increase in Study 2 with pST treatment (P less than .05); however, there was also an effect of sex (P less than .05) on shear force (gilts greater than barrows) that was similar in magnitude to that observed for pST treatment. Differences in sensory evaluation because of pST were minor and of the same magnitude as those observed between barrows and gilts. It was therefore concluded that weekly administration of pST improved F/G and percentage of carcass protein with no detrimental effects on palatability of cooked lean pork.  相似文献

The acute phase response is a collection of physiologic changes initiated early in the inflammatory process. This response is comprised of both localized changes at the site of infection or injury and the initiation of systemic responses, such as the increase in production of acute phase proteins. Cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) play key roles in the regulation of acute phase response in the species studied to date. To better characterize the acute phase response of cattle, recombinant bovine (rBo). IL-1 beta was administered to cattle. A single administration of rBoIL-1 beta was able to induce a dose dependent increase in body temperature, circulating leukocytes, and serum haptoglobin and fibrinogen concentrations, as well as a decrease in plasma zinc concentration. Five daily administrations of rBoIL-1 beta resulted in heightened and prolonged elevations of haptoglobin and fibrinogen. In addition, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein levels were increased, a response not seen after a single administration of rBoIL-1 beta. These results indicate that IL-1 is an important regulator of the acute phase response in cattle.  相似文献

Fifteen worm-free lambs (two-and-a-half to three months or four to four-and-a-half months old) were infected with 3500 or 4000 Ostertagia ostertagi larvae on five days each week for six weeks, and their performance compared to that of controls. Eleven lambs were killed after eight weeks and four were challenged with O circumcincta to determine whether any cross resistance had developed. A feature of the O ostertagi infection was the considerable variation in response. Overall liveweight gain was lowered by 24 per cent in the two-and-a-half to three-month-old infected lambs, mainly due to reductions of 27 to 40 per cent in four of the seven lambs. There was no consistent effect in the older lambs. The worm populations consisted mainly of early fourth stage larvae and developing worms, but a small percentage reached sexual maturity and these produced a low faecal egg count (1 to 63 eggs per gram). Numerous intraluminal refractive crystals were present in the gut of both adult worms and developing stages, possibly reflecting degenerative changes. Hypertrophy of the abomasal mucosa with patchy loss of differentiation was a feature of the infection, and in four lambs serum pepsinogen concentrations were elevated. Exposure to O ostertagi did confer some protection against challenge with O circumcincta in that worm counts were reduced to about 60 per cent of those in controls, although no increase was observed in the numbers of arrested larvae. The successful passage of O ostertagi through young lambs could be important in mixed or alternate grazing systems by providing a reservoir of infection for the alternate host.  相似文献

Bovine milk lymphocytes are less responsive to in vitro mitogen stimulation than peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). In this study, milk leukocytes (ML) or their soluble products, were co-cultured with mitogen stimulated PBL to determine if suppression could be transferred to normally responsive cells. Addition of either ML (treated with mitomycin C to prevent cell division), or supernatant from ML cultures to cultures of autologous PBL resulted in a reduction of mitogenesis by the PBL, but no suppression was seen with addition of treated PBL or PBL supernatant. Suppression was greater when the ML were from animals with chronic staphylococcal infection. Suppression by ML supernatant was not due to toxicity to the responders, since addition at the latter stages of culture had no effect on the response. These results indicate that reduced mitogenesis by milk lymphocytes may be due to the presence of suppressor cells or molecules.  相似文献

Mature pregnant crossbred ewes (n = 90) were used in a randomized complete block design and assigned to 1 of 3 winter-feeding systems differing in primary feed source: haylage (HL), limit-fed corn (CN), or limit-fed dried distillers grains (DDGS). Effects of these winter-feeding strategies on ewe and lamb performance were determined. Diets were formulated to meet or exceed NRC (1985) nutrient requirements during gestation and were fed from about d 60 of gestation until parturition. All ewes were fed a common diet postpartum. Every 2 wk during gestation, BW and BCS were collected and diets were adjusted to maintain similar BW gain for ewes fed CN and DDGS vs. HL. At 80 and 122 d of gestation, jugular blood samples were collected at 0, 3, 6, and 9 h postfeeding to measure plasma glucose, insulin, NEFA, and blood urea nitrogen concentrations. At birth, 6 lambs per treatment were killed to measure body composition. At 28 ± 2 d postpartum, milk yield was measured. Lambs were weaned at 61 ± 4 d of age. During mid gestation (d 60 to 115), BW gain of ewes was similar among treatments; however, at d 115 of gestation ewes fed HL had a smaller (P = 0.04) BCS than ewes fed DDGS or CN. Plasma glucose concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.004) in ewes fed CN than in those fed HL or DDGS just before feeding on d 80 and 122 of gestation, whereas ewes fed DDGS vs. CN or HL had greater (P ≤ 0.04) plasma insulin concentrations at 3 h postfeeding. At parturition, ewe BW was greatest for DDGS, least for HL, and intermediate for CN (P ≤ 0.003). Ewes fed CN and DDGS had greater BCS at parturition than those fed HL, but by weaning, ewes fed DDGS had greater BCS (P ≤ 0.05) than those fed CN or HL. Birth BW tended (P = 0.09) to be heavier for lambs from ewes fed CN and DDGS than from those fed HL prepartum, but there was no difference (P = 0.19) due to ewe gestation diet on lamb BW at weaning. At birth, lamb muscle, bone, organ, and fat measures were not affected (P > 0.13) by treatment. Ewe milk production and lamb preweaning ADG were also similar (P > 0.44) among treatments. Prepartum dam winter feed source did not have detrimental effects on pre- or postpartum ewe performance, but altered prepartum maternal nutrient supply during gestation, which affected birth weight but not preweaning growth or mortality.  相似文献

Four Babesia bigemina stabilates were used to determine the immune response of cattle to acute and chronic blood- and tick-borne infections. Thirty-two intact calves were divided into 16 groups of two and each calf was inoculated with infective B bigemina erythrocytic stabilates. Twenty-eight days later they were challanged with homologous and heterologous stabilates, and monitored for an additional 20 days. The hosts' apparently reduced response to homologous challenge but marked immune response to heterologous challenge indicated antigenic differences between the isolates and confirmed the conclusions reached by examination of the serological data.  相似文献

This study characterized the immune responses in four vaccinated and four control cows in response to vaccination and experimental intramammary inoculation with Mycoplasma bovis. Specific antibody responses occurred in serum and milk in response to vaccination and experimental infection. Lymphocytes from peripheral blood, but not from the mammary gland of vaccinated cows had increased responsiveness to mitogens. No lymphocytes tested were responsive to M. bovis antigen. Both vaccination and experimental infection resulted in skin test reactivity. These results imply that vaccination results in immune responses which may alter the course of experimental M. bovis mastitis, but may contribute to cellular inflammation.  相似文献

Generalized bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) infection was diagnosed in six Salers calves from the same herd. The calves had received an intramuscular injection of modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis parainfluenza-3 vaccine between birth and three days of age. The purpose of this study was to determine if the outbreak was associated with the vaccine strain of BHV-1. Analysis of epidemiological data and BHV-1 DNA for restriction fragment length polymorphism was undertaken. Multifocal necrosis in multiple organs was observed on pathological examination, and the presence of BHV-1 in tissues was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Forty-three calves (aged birth to thirty days) were vaccinated over an 11-day interval. The 10 deaths recorded for vaccinated calves were clustered over a subsequent 14-day interval. Mortality in calves vaccinated between birth and three days of age was significantly higher than in nonvaccinated calves (chi-square test; p < or = 0.025), and this mortality was characterized by a greater age at death and duration of illness for vaccinated calves (t test; p < or = 0.001). The patterns of the restriction fragments, generated by six restriction endonucleases, of BHV-1 isolated from a necropsied calf and from the vaccine were identical, and different from that of a laboratory strain of BHV-1 (P8-2). These findings support the conclusion that newborn calves were susceptible to an intramuscularly injected vaccine strain of BHV-1, and that administration of an intramuscular modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis parainfluenza-3 vaccine to neonatal calves may not be an innocuous procedure.  相似文献
