Performance records on Hereford cattle raised in two herds were used to evaluate cytoplasmic genetic effects on preweaning growth and milk production. Animals were traced through maternal lineage to foundation females to form cytoplasmic lines. Growth records were available on 1,189 calves at Raleigh and 1,599 at Plymouth representing 27 and 15 cytoplasmic lines, respectively. Milk records were available on 418 cows at Raleigh and 522 cows at Plymouth, representing 20 and 13 cytoplasmic lines. After adjustment for sire, cytoplasmic effects were significant for birth weight (BWT), average daily gain (ADG) and 205-d weight (WT205) in both herds. Cytoplasm accounted for 2, 5 and 5% of the variance for BWT, ADG and WT205 at Raleigh; and 1, 2 and 2% of the variance at Plymouth. After addition of maternal grandsire to the model, cytoplasm was still significant; however, variances were reduced at Plymouth. Cytoplasmic effects for milk yield were important at Raleigh (P less than .01) but marginal at Plymouth (P = .10). Variance components for cytoplasm accounted for 4 and 1% of the variance for milk yield at Raleigh and Plymouth, respectively. Ranges for least-squares constants for cytoplasmic lines corresponded to one of two standard deviations. Correlations among least-squares constants for ADG, WT205 and milk yield were high, suggesting that cytoplasmic effects were mediated through milk production. More research is needed to confirm these results before cytoplasmic inheritance is considered in breeding programs for beef cattle.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of breed, sex and plane of nutrition on the growth response to zeranol in Angus and crossbred calves prior to weaning. Eighty-eight heifers and 118 steers received either a high or low plane of nutrition using a first and last grazing technique. Half of the calves in each nutrition group received a zeranol implant (36 mg) at an average age of 3.4 mo. Both zeranol and the higher level of nutrition increased (P less than .001) growth rate prior to weaning (7.4 mo of age). Zeranol did not affect hip height at weaning (P greater than .1), but calves on the higher plane of nutrition were taller (P less than .01) than calves on the lower plane of nutrition. The zeranol x nutrition interaction was not significant (P greater than .1) for growth rate or hip height. Steers grew faster (P less than .01) preweaning and were taller (P less than .01) at weaning than heifers. Crossbred calves gained more rapidly (P less than .001) preweaning and were taller (P less than .001) at weaning than Angus calves were. Neither sex nor breed interacted with zeranol to influence any of the traits examined. Based on these results we conclude that preweaning growth was affected by zeranol and this effect was consistent across sexes, breeds and planes of nutrition tested.  相似文献

An evaluation of natural twinning in beef cattle revealed that cows birthing twins had shorter (P less than .01) gestation lengths, more (P less than .01) retained placentas, more (P less than .01) dystocia, more (P less than .01) days to estrus, lower (P less than .01) conception rates and more (P less than .01) days to pregnancy than cows birthing singles. Days to estrus, conception rate and days to pregnancy were not affected by number of calves reared (1 vs 2) in cows birthing twins. Survival at birth was greater (P less than .01) for single- than for twin-born calves, but twins and singles did not differ (P greater than .05) in postnatal survival. When dystocia was experienced, calf survival at birth was 95% vs 73% for singles vs twins compared with 99% vs 92% when no dystocia was experienced. Calves born twins were lighter (P less than .01) at birth, 100 d and 200 d, but twins and singles did not differ in postweaning gains. Total calf weights at 100 d per cow calving were 12% greater (P less than .01) in cows birthing twins vs singles when twin calves reared by foster dams were excluded. The potential increase in cow productivity for total calf weight at 100 d is 40% if calf survival rates of twins with dystocia relative to survival rates of twins without dystocia were comparable to survival rates of singles with and without dystocia, and if cows birthing twins were fed and managed to obtain conception rates equal to those of cows birthing singles. Identification of cows gestating twins to provide for their higher prepartum nutritive requirements and calving assistance at parturition is necessary to make twinning in cattle an economically viable technology.  相似文献

Piglets were provided supplemental energy as oral doses of corn oil to find whether such treatment might improve survival or weight gains. A total of 1,840 piglets from 182 litters was used. Piglets were allotted to dosed and control treatments within litter on the basis of body weight. Dosed piglets received a total of 8 ml of corn oil in four doses during the first 48 h postpartum. The survival rate to weaning was high and not affected (P greater than .10) by the corn oil doses. Deaths of piglets low in birth weight were delayed by the fat doses, suggesting some utilization. The fat doses did not affect piglet weight gain. Factors affecting preweaning survival and growth of piglets were also evaluated using data from the same piglets. Specific factors investigated were sex, parity of dam, birth weight, litter size and the mean and standard deviation of piglet birth weights within litters. Male piglets were heavier at birth than females, but there was no sex effect on weight at 7 d or at weaning. Small males were less likely to survive to 3 d than were small females. Litters from primiparous sows were smaller at birth and weaning, but had lower percentages of stillbirths and of preweaning deaths than did those from multiparous sows. Piglets from primiparous sows were more uniform in birth weight. Piglets that were heavier at birth grew faster and were more likely to survive. Litter size affected growth but not survival of piglets. A heavier average birth weight in the litter reduced slightly the growth rate of individual piglets. An increase in variability of piglet birth weight within a litter was associated with an increase of the percentages of stillbirths and of preweaning mortality. A few litters accounted for a major portion of the mortality. Much of the variation in piglet mortality and growth was not explained by factors considered.  相似文献

Birth weight, preweaning gain and weaning weight (adjusted 180-d weight) data, collected at McGregor, Texas, were analyzed for genetic differences. Breedtypes represented in the data were Brahman, Hereford and various Brahman-Hereford crosses. Preweaning gain was calculated as adjusted 180-d weight less birth weight. All statistical models included effects of dam age, year, season and sex. Analyses were performed using a breedtype model and a regression model that redefined breedtype as direct additive, direct heterotic, maternal additive and maternal heterotic effects. Brahman dams produced calves with lightest birth weights. Brahman-sired calves were heaviest at birth compared with those by other sire breedtypes. The estimated Brahman direct additive effect on birth weight was 4.6 kg greater than Hereford. The Brahman maternal additive effect was 7.5 kg less than Hereford. Direct and maternal heterotic effects on birth weight were 2.2 and .6 kg, respectively. Calves from F1 dams had larger preweaning gains than those of the other breedtypes. The Brahman direct additive effect on preweaning gain was 17.7 kg less than Hereford and the Brahman maternal additive effect was 20 kg greater than Hereford. Direct and maternal heterotic effects on preweaning gain were 19.6 and 19.5 kg, respectively. Results of weaning weight analyses were similar to preweaning gain analyses. The largest effects on weaning weight were direct and maternal heterosis, which were 21.6 and 19.8 kg, respectively.  相似文献

It is known that gilt progeny performance is reduced compared with sow progeny. Previous research suggests that the presence of maternal feces in early life improves the health and survival of offspring. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether contact with feces from multiparous (MP) sows would improve the growth and survival of piglets born and reared on primiparous (P1) sows and if so, whether these differences are associated with the gut microbiota. Four treatments were applied for 10 days: Donor (n = 29) piglets had limited access to maternal feces as, each morning, sow feces were removed and placed in the crate of a P1 sow (P1-FT; n = 30 piglets) and P1-Con (n = 29) and MP-Con (n = 33) piglets had access to their own mothers’ feces. All piglets were weighed on days 1, 3, 10, and 18. Fecal samples were collected from a subset of sows (n = 10/treatment) 3 days post farrow and from two female piglets/litter on days 10 and 18 (n = 20/treatment) and subject to 16S rRNA amplicon analysis. Escherichia, Clostridium, Campylobacter, and Treponema were more abundant in MP sows, while P1 sows had a higher abundance of Lactobacillus and Prevotella. At 10 days, P1 progeny fecal microbiota differed, and growth and survival were reduced when compared with MP progeny. No treatment effect was observed for P1-FT piglets (P > 0.05). Donor piglets had a different fecal microbiota and improved weight and survival then all other treatments (P < 0.05). Overall, the removal of sow feces from the farrowing crate improved piglet microbiota development, growth, and survival.  相似文献

Crossbred progeny from females, 3 yr old and older, representing Brown Swiss (B), Red Poll (R), Hereford (H) and Angus (A) maternal grandsires and maternal granddams in a diallel crossing experiment were evaluated to estimate breed mean maternal heterosis (mean hMi) for each breed, maternal heterosis for specific breed cross females (hMij), average maternal heterosis for all crosses (mean hM) and breed grandmaternal effects (gM'i) for preweaning calf traits. Estimates of mean hM were significant for birth date and weight, 200-d weight and 200-d weight/cow exposed. Even though calves with crossbred dams weighed more at birth, they did not differ from calves with straightbred dams in frequency of calving assistance. The estimates of hMij were similar for most crosses and most traits, except 200-d weight and 200-d weight/cow exposed. The largest heterotic advantage was exhibited by progeny of BH reciprocal cross females, which exceeded crossbred progeny from BB and HH females for 200-d weight/cow exposed by 35.9 kg. The smallest heterotic effect was exhibited by crossbred progeny of RA reciprocal cross females. Progeny with R maternal granddams exhibited a higher (P less than .05) live calf born and weaned percentage than progeny with H maternal granddams. Progeny with B maternal granddams were born later (P less than .05) in the calving season than progeny with R maternal granddams. Progeny with A maternal granddams exhibited a lower frequency of calving assistance than progeny with H maternal granddams, and progeny with H maternal granddams were heavier (P less than .05) at 200 d than progeny with R maternal granddams. There was a tendency for estimates of breed grandmaternal effects (gMi) to exhibit an inverse relationship with estimates of breed maternal effects (gMi).  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate milk casein polymorphisms in dams and to determine the impacts of maternal casein genotypes on growth traits of their sucking calves. Milk samples from 433 dams of the breeds German Angus (GA) and German Simmental (GS) were typed at the milk protein loci α s1-casein (αs1-CN), β-casein (β-CN), α s2-casein (αs2-CN), and κ-casein (κ-CN) via isoelectric focusing. Associations between casein genotypes in maternal milk with growth traits of their 1,872 calves were analyzed until the age of weaning using linear mixed models, considering either genotypes of individual casein loci (model 1) or composite α s1-β-α s2-κ-CN genotypes within the casein cluster (model 2). Besides environmental effects such as sex, age of the dam, and calving year-season, genetic effects (breed group and maternal and paternal effects) were considered in statistical models. The composite casein genotype BBǀA2A2ǀAAǀAB (order of genes on bovine chromosome 6: α s1-ǀβ-ǀα s2-ǀκ-CN) was associated with greater average daily weight gains (ADG) and heavier age-adjusted weaning weights (WW) of calves (P < 0.05). The effects of composite genotypes on birth weight of calves were similar (P > 0.05; model 2). With regard to individual casein loci, greater ADG and WW were observed for calves from dams with the genotypes κ-CN BB and α s1-CN BB, respectively (P < 0.05; model 1). Age-adjusted WW was largest for calves from dams carrying the κ-CN genotype BB (215 kg) compared with calves representing the maternal AB and AA genotypes (both 204 kg). Results from the present study suggested selectable casein genotypes due to their nutritional value of milk (value in terms of offspring performances), offering new perspectives for breeding strategies in beef cattle to improve preweaning calf performance.  相似文献

SUMMARY: This study was based on the data of 2943 and 3032 Sardi ewes and lambs and 2737 and 2961 Beni Guil ewes and lambs, collected over 12 years in Kra Kra Station and 19 years in Oued Isly Station, respectively. The effects of inbreeding on performance were examined by using the regression models, in which inbreeding coefficients for the individual and dam were fitted as covariates to models that included other environmental and genetic sources of variation and various performance traits as dependent variables. For Beni Guil lambs, inbreeding of the individual had a negative effect on weight at birth, 30 days and 90 days. The estimates of the effect of a 1% increase in inbreeding were -0.0053, -0.0274, and -0.0469 kg, respectively. Inbreeding of the dam had a significant negative effect on lamb weights in the two breeds, except for the weight at 90 days of Beni Guil lambs. The effects of individual and dam inbreeding did not differ significantly from zero for lamb survival to 90 days. However, litter size at birth and 90 days, as well as litter weight at 90 days, were not affected significantly by either lamb (fetus) or ewe inbreeding. The only exception was the litter weight at 90 days of Beni Guil ewes, which was depressed by 0.0832 for each 1% increase in lamb inbreeding. It was concluded that inbreeding depression is unimportant in open flocks with a low level of inbreeding.

The performance of 264 contemporary 2-yr-old straightbred and crossbred dams during 1978 to 1981 was studied and maternal heterosis was estimated. Dam breed groups were Hereford (HH), Angus-Hereford (AH), 25% Simmental-75% Hereford (1S3H), 50% Simmental-50% Hereford (1S1H) and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford (3S1H). Differences among dam breed groups were nonsignificant for length of gestation, calving difficulty and late milk production but were important (P less than .01) for calf weights (birth, early and late milking periods and weaning), calf average daily gains during various intervals from conception to weaning, early milk production and other calf traits at weaning (height, weight/height and visual condition score). Dam breed group means (HH, AH, 1S3H, 1S1H and 3S1H, respectively) for representative calf traits were .37, .39, .39, .42 and .42 kg/d for estimated average daily gain the last 3 mo of gestation; 33.6, 34.7, 35.7, 37.6 and 37.1 kg for birth weight; 191, 205, 209, 228 and 228 kg for weaning and 7.5, 8.4, 8.3, 9.5 and 10.0 kg for 24-h early milk production. Therefore, 2-yr-old crossbred dams raised calves that were generally larger for the preweaning gain traits than HH dams. Differences among dam breed groups were significant for traits involving reproduction; means (HH, AH, 1S3H, 1S1H and 3S1H, respectively) were .58, .92, .72, .91 and .79 for proportion calving and 105, 179, 126, 182 and 154 kg for actual calf weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding. Estimates of percentage maternal heterosis were 6.3, 12.9, 9.0 and 7.6% for calf weights at birth, 40 d, 130 d and weaning, respectively; 1.8, 5.7 and 5.7% for calf hip height, height/weight and condition score at weaning, respectively; and 43.1 and 34.6% for proportion calving and actual calf weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding. The dominance model explained most (greater than 95%) of the variation observed among dam breed group means for most traits.  相似文献

The importance of birth-to-weaning average daily gain as a determinant of weight at a final age and yield of marketable pork was investigated. Treatments were imposed to create variation in birth-to-weaning ADG independent of birth weight. Newborn pigs were cross-fostered to create litters of four through 14 pigs/litter. Creep feed was offered to pigs from 5 d of age or during last 2 d before weaning at 13 to 20 d (average = 17 d). Growth rate and carcass dissection data were obtained from 195 barrows that were slaughtered at an average age of 170 d (SD = 7.5), weight of 109 kg (SD = 10.5). All traits measured were influenced by birth dam and sire (P < 0.01). Quadratic and cubic effects (P < 0.09) of litter size on birth-to-weaning ADG and weaning weight were different between the creep feeding treatments. Data revealed a positive influence (P < 0.04) of creep feeding from 5 d of age on birth-to-weaning ADG and weaning weight in larger size (> 8) litters. Importance of the independent variables birth weight, birth-to-weaning ADG, weaning weight, and birth weight plus birth-to-weaning ADG in determination of measures of postweaning growth and yield of marketable pork were examined by step-down regression analysis. Initial models included the linear and quadratic effects of the independent variables. In general, R2 for models ranked birth weight < birth-to-weaning ADG < d-17 weaning weight < birth weight + birth-to-weaning ADG. The R2 of models for BW at 170 d of age were 0.11 (P < 0.01) using birth weight as the independent variable, 0.16 (P < 0.01) using birth-to-weaning ADG, 0.19 (P < 0.01) using d-17 weaning weight, and 0.21 (P < 0.01) using birth weight + birth-to-weaning ADG. The model for effect of birth-to-weaning ADG on BW at 170 d of age indicated that a 10-g advantage in birth-to-weaning ADG produced a 0.94-kg advantage in BW at 170 d of age. Positive relationships (P < 0.05) between birth-to-weaning ADG and measures of postweaning growth and carcass yield suggest management practices that increase birth-to-weaning ADG may be advantageous in pork production.  相似文献

Mature Charolais x Angus rotational cross cows were adjusted to moderate body condition by d 190 of gestation then randomly blocked to a maintenance (ME) or low-energy (LE) diet. At parturition, the 128 cows were randomly allotted within prepartum (PRP) diet to a high-energy (HE) or LE diet. At d 30 postpartum (PP), cows were randomly blocked to two treatments in which calves were weaned early (EW) or normally (NW) at 7 mo of age. Cows receiving a LE PRP diet had lighter calves at birth (34.7 vs 39.0 kg) and 105 d (127.9 vs 144.6 kg). Prepartum and PP energy interacted to affect postpartum anestrous interval (PPI, d) and cycling activity (%), respectively (LE-LE = 72.6, 33.3; LE-HE = 54.3, 56.3; ME-LE = 65.7, 52.9; ME-HE = 68.4, 54.3). High PP energy averaged over PRP diet increased (P less than .10) pregnancy rate by 22.7% and 105-d calf weight by 15.1 kg. Early weaning reduced PPI by 24.3 d (P less than .01) and first service conception rate by 21.7% (P less than .10). Cycling activity within 60 d PP was affected (P less than .01) by PRP diet and suckling status (LE-EW = 62.5, LE-NW = 26.7, ME-EW = 88.9, ME-NW = 13.3%). Thin cows had a longer PPI but had a higher first service conception rate than moderate and fleshy cows. Higher pregnancy rates were observed in cows approaching or maintaining average body condition from parturition to conception than for cows moving away from moderate body condition. Results suggest that fleshy and thin cows at parturition should be managed to approach moderate body condition before the breeding season to optimize reproductive performance and preweaning calf gain.  相似文献

Calving and weaning rates, birth weight, calving ease, and 24-h calf survival were evaluated in a four-breed diallel of Simmental (S), Limousin (L), Polled Hereford (H) and Brahman (B) beef cattle in five calf crops. Limousin dams tended to have the highest calving and weaning rates because they were able to have heavier calves with less calving difficulty and higher survival rates. Brahman-sired calves were the heaviest at birth (P less than .05) and B dams produced the lightest calves (P less than .001). Lower birth weights tended to be the limiting factor on survival of these calves. A linear comparison among means to evaluate purebred, additive, maternal and specific combining ability effects showed most of the reduction in birth weight from B dams was due to maternal effects. Breed of dam accounted for a higher proportion of variation in calving ease than did sire breed. Simmental sires had significantly heavier calves at birth and S and H dams tended to have more calving difficulty and lower survival rates. Heterosis for these traits was generally not significant. Correlations were generally positive and significant for birth weight and calving ease, but were more variable for birth weight and survival. Linear regressions of calving ease on birth weight both within years and within dam-breed-year subclasses were very similar in that the association of these two traits was reduced as dam age increased.  相似文献

Experimental lifetime performance data obtained from 156 straightbred Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorn and 172 first-cross heifers were used to estimate heterosis for economic efficiency in a 100-cow herd at age equilibrium under three culling policies and at terminal ages from 6 to 12 yr. All nonpregnant heifers and cows greater than 9 yr of age were culled. The culling policy for removal of nonpregnant cows from second parity through 9 yr of age were 1) no culling, 2) after two consecutive years (actual), and 3) all (imposed). Efficiency was calculated as input cost per unit of output value. A 10-yr average was used for costs of replacement heifers, cow units, and the ratio of calf:cull cow prices (PR), plus higher and lower PR. Input included costs for both cow units and purchased replacements. Output value included both weaned calves and cull cows. Optimum terminal age was mainly a function of PR: 9 yr for average and high PR, but 6 through 9 yr when PR was low, regardless of culling policy or breed groups. Efficiency differences among culling policies were small for high or average PR, but more culling for infertility was beneficial when PR was low. Estimated reductions in unit costs of output value under any culling policy or terminal age were approximately 6% from crossbred cows plus another 6% from crossbred calves, or a total of 12% from specific three-breed crossing of these British breeds. Cost reductions would be somewhat less for rotation crossbreeding but greater for mating smaller crossbred cows with sires of superior growth-carcass breeds.  相似文献
