Eighty crossbred boars were utilized in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of two energy levels (ad libitum and 75% ad libitum) and two Ca/P levels (100 and 150% of National Research Council daily requirement) to determine the effect of varying growth rate and Ca/P intake on performance and bone characteristics throughout the growth phase. Boars were fed the diets beginning postweaning at 5 wk of age and continuing until necropsy at 10 +/- 2-d intervals between 80 and 220 d of age, inclusive. Body weight of limit-fed boars was 72% that of ad libitum-fed boars. Daily gain and feed per gain ratio favored boars fed the 150% Ca/P levels. Although limit-feeding enhanced the development of longer, thicker and heavier metacarpals earlier in the growth period (between 80 and 150 d of age), there was little difference between limit-fed and ad libitum-fed boars at 220 d of age when values were corrected for differences in body weight. Mechanical bone characteristics, which were greater for ad libitum-fed than for limit-fed boars at the same age, were not different when values were corrected for body weight. Boars fed 150% Ca/P levels had heavier and thicker walled metacarpals that had greater bone strength than boars fed 100% Ca/P levels, with the magnitude of the difference not as great at 220 d of age and when values were corrected for body weight. Generally, boars fed the ad libitum-150% Ca/P diet had the heaviest and strongest bones. Ether extract, ash and Ca and P content of ash were generally higher for ad libitum-fed vs limit-fed and 150 vs 100% Ca/P diets at 80 and 150 d of age, but were not different at 220 d. Metacarpal weight, size, thickness, strength and ash content increased with age with a small decline in the rate of increase. Ether extract decreased with age. There was a very small increase in the Ca content of ash and a very small decrease in the P content with age, resulting in a slightly wider Ca:P ratio in older boars.  相似文献

The front and hind feet from a total of 64 boars, 86 sows and 107 barrows were radiographed after necropsy to study the nature of inequalities in digits and their relation to nutrition and structural unsoundness in swine. Boars were fed ad libitum or 75% ad libitum with 100 or 150% of 1979 NRC recommended vitamin-mineral levels, whereas, sows were fed the same two levels of energy with 100 or 150% of NRC recommended calcium-phosphorus (Ca-P) levels during the growing-finishing period. Barrows were fed two sources of phosphorus with increasing levels of sodium. Radiographs of metacarpals, metatarsals and associated phalanges were measured for length and deviations of proximal and distal extremities. The length of both medial and lateral bones were longer (P less than .05) in boars fed 75% ad libitum than in the ad libitum-fed group, which was probably due to age (285 +/- 8.7 vs 240 +/- 8.4 d). Dietary energy and Ca-P level did not influence the bone lengths in sows. Similarly, dietary phosphorus source or sodium level had no influence on bone lengths or deviations in barrows. The incidence of inequality in digits with a smaller medial digit was 90.9% in boars, 96.7% in sows and 87.6% in barrows. In boars and sows, the inequality in digits of front feet was due to lower positioning of proximal extremities of lateral bones because the total lengths of both medial and lateral bones were approximately equal. The effect of early nutrition on subsequent bone development was studied using gilts that had previously been fed ad libitum or 75% ad libitum intake and 100 or 150% National Research Council-recommended daily Ca and P from weaning to 100 kg. During the three-parity reproductive study, sows were fed a 14% protein diet. Metacarpals and metatarsals were taken from sows culled due to lameness or failure to breed and from sows after completing three parities. Femur and humerus articular cartilage and turbinates were described at necropsy. Metacarpals and metatarsals were heavier and tended to have thicker walls when sows were previously fed ad libitum or fed 150% Ca and P. Energy intake produced the greater response. Metacarpal breaking strength was greatest for sows previously fed ad libitum. Metatarsals were not affected by energy intake. Stiffness, Young's modulus of elasticity (YME) and flexural modulus for metacarpals and metatarsals were not affected by energy intake. Previously fed Ca and P intakes did not affect any of the mechanical bone characteristics. Metacarpals were heavier, had a greater breaking strength, were more elastic and exhibited slightly less resistance to bending than the metatarsals. The ether extract, ash, Ca and P content and the Ca:P ratio of metacarpals and metatarsals were not affected by previously fed energy or Ca and P intakes. The ether extract content tended to decrease and the ash, Ca and P content tended to increase with age. Articular cartilage and turbinate scores were not influenced by previously fed energy or Ca and P intakes. The YME and flexural modulus were the only bone characteristics that were even poorly correlated (average r = .25) with soundness scores, suggesting that high values result in poorer soundness scores. Energy and Ca and P intakes during growth and development had only minimal effects on bone characteristics and no apparent effect on structural soundness and longevity of sows kept for three parities.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to evaluate intake restriction, energy, and protein source on the performance and carcass merit of heifers limit-fed corn gluten feed. Trial 1 crossbred heifers (n = 140) were allotted to ad libitum wet corn gluten feed (WCGF)-hay, ad libitum WCGF-corn, WCGF-corn continuously limit-fed to achieve a gain of 1.1 kg/d or WCGF-corn fed in the following sequence: 70% of ad libitum for 20 d, ad libitum for 20 d, and 2 d common intake during the 84-d growing period. One-half of these restricted-refed heifers received a rumen-undegraded protein supplement, and the other half received a rumen degraded protein supplement. Heifers were fed a common finishing diet ad libitum subsequent to the growing period. Heifers offered ad libitum WCGF-hay and WCGF-corn were slaughtered at a common compositional fat end point. Heifers limit-fed WCGF-corn were slaughtered at the same time as heifers offered ad libitum WCGF-corn, regardless of subcutaneous fat cover. Limit-feeding WCGF-corn diets to growing heifers reduced ADG (P < or = 0.01) but did not compromise feed efficiency. Method of intake restriction, continuous or ad libitum-interrupted, and supplemental protein source did not affect combined growing-finishing performance. However, when fed for a common length of time, the average of the limit-fed heifers had lighter carcass weights (P < or = 0.01) and lower (P = 0.04) marbling scores. Heifers offered ad libitum WCGF-hay gained slower (P < or = 0.01) and less efficiently (P < or = 0.01) than heifers offered WCGF-corn. Trial 2 crossbred heifers (n = 222) were allotted to dry corn gluten feed (DCGF)-corn ad libitum or restricted to 80% of ad libitum for 42, 84, or 126 d; or ad libitum corn silage or DCGF-corn silage at 80% of ad libitum for 84 d. Feed efficiency (P = 0.07) and ADG (P = 0.08) tended to behave quadratically, being poorer for heifers limit-fed for 126 d during the growing period. Heifers limit-fed DCGF-corn gained more efficiently (P = 0.05) than heifers grown on ad libitum corn silage. Limit-feeding CGF-corn to growing beef heifers can be used to achieve moderate rates of gain without compromising feed efficiency. However, limit-feeding during the growing period may result in lighter weight carcasses with lower quality grades if not fed to the same fat end point as heifers grown with free access to concentrate.  相似文献

Crossbred gilts (n = 288) were weaned at 4 to 5 wk of age and retained through three parities. They were used to determine the effects of feeding restricted energy (ad libitum vs 75% ad libitum) and elevated calcium-phosphorus levels (100 vs 150% of the dietary percentage suggested by NRC, 1979) from weaning to 100 kg of body weight on subsequent sow gait characteristics obtained from 16-mm motion pictures. After 100 kg, all females were fed and managed similarly throughout breeding, gestation and lactation. At 50 and 100 kg body weight and 21 d after weaning, females were filmed from the side and rear as they walked on a treadmill (traveling at the rate of .90 cm/s with zero slope) using two 16-mm Arriflex cameras. Objective measurements were taken from the film by projecting it on a reverse screen. Visual appraisal of structural soundness were scored subjectively for each female at each time period. The front foot pastern angle was correlated positively with structural soundness scores, suggesting that sows with smaller angles (more sloping) were given more desirable soundness scores. Early dietary energy and Ca-P levels did not influence number of sows completing three parities or culled for various reasons, front and hind pastern angles, the angles at the hock and carpal joint or rear view measurements, but sows fed ad libitum to 100 kg had a larger frame size even after three parities. Sows that survived three parities tended to have larger body capacity (girth diameter and width across hams) and smaller front and bind pastern angles and angles of the carpal joint and hock at maximum flex than did culled sows. Structural soundness scores did not differ between culled and surviving sows.  相似文献

The effect of colostrum on endocrine and metabolic factors affecting glucose homeostasis was evaluated in 60 neonatal pigs that were fasted, fed (nursed ad libitum) or limit-fed colostrum (25% ad libitum, 4-hr interval feeding). Plasma acquired at birth (t0), and after 10, 20 and 30 hr (t10, t20 and t30, respectively) was analyzed for glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and the glucoregulatory hormones--insulin, glucagon, cortisol, growth hormone and catecholamines. The concentration of glucose and NEFA was similar among treatment groups at birth and increased in proportion to the quantity of colostrum consumed. Pigs fed ad libitum achieved and maintained a higher (greater than or equal to 40%; P less than .01) glucose concentration when compared to fasted neonates. Limit-fed counterparts also achieved and maintained higher levels, with glucose concentration being approximately 20% higher throughout (P less than .05). Fed pigs maintained NEFA concentrations which were approximately 2.5-fold to 4-fold greater than that of fasted pigs (P less than .05). Likewise, limit-fed pigs tended (P = .19) to have elevated NEFA concentrations and a lower (P less than .05) insulin:glucagon molar ratio. An inverse relationship was observed between colostrum intake and plasma concentrations of cortisol and growth hormone. Concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine tended (P greater than .10) to be elevated in fed pigs, relative to those of fasted counterparts. Provision of even limited quantities of colostrum is therefore beneficial to the glucoregulatory response in newborn pigs.  相似文献

Seventy-two crossbred (Large White X Landrace) pigs were used in a 3 X 7 factorial experiment to investigate the response of two strains of boars (strains A and B) and of castrated male pigs (strain B) to seven levels of intake of a single diet (ranging from 5.3 Mcal digestible energy [DE]/d to ad libitum) between 45 and 90 kg live weight. All aspects of growth performance and body composition were affected to different degrees by both strain and sex. At all levels of energy intake strain A boars grew faster, had a lower feed to gain ratio and contained less fat and more water in the empty body than strain B boars, which in turn exhibited faster live weight gain and more efficient and leaner growth than castrated males. The magnitude of the differences in growth performance between strain A and strain B boars and castrates increased with increased energy intake above 7.88 Mcal DE/d, and these differences were associated with concomitant strain differences in their respective capacity for protein growth and in the relationship between energy intake and protein deposition. For strain A boars the rate of protein deposition increased linearly from 92 to 188 g/d with increased energy intake from 5.3 Mcal DE/d to ad libitum. For strain B boars and castrates the rate of protein deposition increased linearly with increased energy intake up to 7.88 Mcal DE/d, but thereafter it remained constant at 128 and 85 g/d, respectively. For castrates protein deposition was depressed (P less than .01) when the diet was offered ad libitum. Strain A boars had a higher energy requirement for maintenance (3.55 Mcal DE/d) than strain B boars (2.77 Mcal DE/d) or castrates (2.60 Mcal DE/d). Strain A boars also contained less protein and more water in the fat free empty body than the other two pig types.  相似文献

Eighteen weanling horses were assigned to two treatments: limited or ad libitum feed intake. Growth and feed utilization were evaluated over a 78-wk period. Ad libitum-fed horses gained 24% more (P less than .05) weight than limit-fed horses. Total BW was distributed into 57% fore and 43% hind weight and did not differ between groups regardless of dietary treatment or age. Net gain and ADG in wither height of ad libitum-fed horses exceeded (P less than .05) that of limit-fed horses over 78 wk. Ad libitum-fed horses consumed 19, 44 and 34% more digestible energy (DE) than indicated in 1978 NRC tables from 6 to 12 mo, 12 to 18 mo and 18 to 24 mo of age, respectively. Total DE intakes were positively correlated to weight and therefore were confounded by age. Weight-scaled DE intake of ad libitum-fed weanling horses increased .2% for each 1 C degree decrease in barn temperature below 0 degree C. Maintenance energy requirements were estimated at 37.8 and 35.6 kcal DE/kg BW for limit- and ad libitum-fed horses, respectively. Grams of gain per megacalorie of DE consumed above maintenance ranged from 83 to 24 g/Mcal and were only 22 to 75% of values derived from 1978 NRC tables. Energy guidelines given by NRC were considered suitable for growth based on normalcy of musculoskeletal growth. However, the ADG by our horses, which were fed high-forage diets, were lower than those predicted by 1978 NRC.  相似文献

Four metabolism and two finishing trials were conducted to determine the effects of imposed feed intake variation on acidosis and performance of finishing steers. In Metabolism Trial 1, four ruminally fistulated steers were limit-fed and subjected to either a constant amount of feed per day (C) or low intake variation of .7 kg/d (LV). No treatment differences were found for intake or measures of acidosis. Metabolism Trial 2 was conducted similarly to Metabolism Trial 1 with treatments of C and high intake variation of 1.4 kg/d (HV). Treatment HV increased (P < .05) acidosis, as indicated by the area of ruminal pH below 5.6. In Metabolism Trial 3, four steers were fed at ad libitum levels of intake and subjected to three levels of intake variation: ad libitum intake with no imposed intake variation (AL), LV of .7 kg/d, and HV of 1.4 kg/d. No treatment differences were found. In Metabolism Trial 4, six ruminally fistulated steers were fed at ad libitum levels and subjected to three levels of intake variation: AL, LV of .9 kg/d, and HV of 1.8 kg/d. Average ruminal pH increased (P < .05) and area of ruminal pH below 5.6 decreased (P < .05) as level of intake variation was increased. In Finishing Trial 1, 75 steers were assigned to eight pens and two treatments: AL or HV of 1.8 kg/d. Dry matter intake increased (P < .05) from AL to HV. Daily gain and gain/feed were not affected by treatment. In Finishing Trial 2, 94 steers were assigned to 12 pens and two treatments: AL or HV of 1.8 kg/d. No treatment differences were noted in DMI, daily gain, or gain/ feed. Therefore, results of these trials indicate that intake variation of up to 1.8 kg/d does not increase acidosis or decrease performance of finishing steers fed at ad libitum levels of intake.  相似文献

A replicated trial of 3 X 3 Latin square design was conducted with growing pigs (about 29 kg initially) to determine the effects of different levels of feed intake on nutrient digestibilities determined near the end of the small intestine and over the total digestive tract. Pigs were fiftted with simple T-cannula. Feeding levels were ad libitum (AL) and limit-fed (4.5 or 3% of body weight/d). A 16% sorghum-soybean diet was used. Limit-fed pigs were fed at 12-h intervals and water was limited to 2 liters/kg of diet; AL pigs received water ad libitum. Consumption by pigs fed ad libitum averaged 6% of body weight/d. Neither feeding method nor level greatly affected nutrient digestibility measured at the end of the small intestine, but values tended to decrease as feeding level decreased. Comparisons of nutrient digestibility between AL and limit-fed pigs ranged from 2.9 to .7 percentage units, with only N (P less than .10) and methionine (P less than .05) reaching significance. Differences between 4.5 and 3% were slightly larger, ranging from 4.3 to -.2 percentage units, with differences for dry matter, N, gross energy and several amino acids reaching significance (P less than .10 or P less than .05). Measured over the total tract, observed differences among feeding levels were again small, but the trend was reversed, with digestibilities increasing as feeding level decreased. Maternal diet influences fetal growth and postnatal development. We hypothesized that conceptuses gestated in sows provided ad libitum vs. restricted feed intake would differ in the milieu of hormones, growth factors, nutrients, and metabolites associated with growth and metabolism. This hypothesis was tested in two experiments by providing fourth-parity sows (Pig Improvement Co. C15 bred to Line 326 boars) with either 1.81 kg/d (as-fed basis; control) or ad libitum access to gestation diet. In Exp. 1, control (n = 6) or ad libitum (6.4 +/- 0.11 kg/d; n = 9) treatments were provided from d 29 to 45 (onset of estrus is d 0), and sows were slaughtered on d 46. Ad libitum sows gained more weight from d 29 to 45 than controls (34.0 vs. 4.32 kg, respectively; P < 0.01). No differences were observed on d 46 for the number of fetuses, conceptus attachment length, allantoic + amniotic fluid volume, placental weight, fetal weight, and fetal crown-to-rump length. Variation in fetal crown-to-rump length was less (P < 0.03) in sows fed ad libitum. Sows fed ad libitum had greater (P < 0.01) IGF-I and insulin concentrations in plasma than controls on d 43. In Exp. 2, sows were fed 1.81 kg/d (n = 6) or ad libitum (7.0 +/- 0.11 kg/d; n = 4) from d 30 to 56 of gestation, when sows were anesthetized and samples were collected surgically from their gravid uteri. Sows fed ad libitum gained more weight (P < 0.01) than did controls and had more (P < 0.06) IGF-I in their plasma and the plasma collected from umbilical veins of their fetuses. No differences were found for concentrations of insulin or glucose in plasma of sows or fetuses, but urea N concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) in maternal plasma and in the plasma, and allantoic and amniotic fluids of conceptuses from sows fed ad libitum. Combined data from Exp. 1 and 2 revealed a treatment x fetal number interaction (P < 0.05) for average fetal weight. The expected negative relationship between within-litter average fetal weight and the number of fetuses per uterus was observed for control sows (y = 115.4 -1.75 x fetal number; P < 0.05), but litters of ad libitum sows did not show this effect. The hypothesis that providing feed in excess of established requirements in early gestation affects the in utero milieu is supported by these results. Data further reveal that, at least at mid-gestation, the restraint to fetal growth that is exhibited when fetal number increases in control sows is not exhibited when sows are fed ad libitum.  相似文献

Three trials, utilizing a total of 240 crossbred gilts, were conducted to study the influence of 0 (NB) or 220 (SB) microgram supplemental biotin/kg of diet on feedlot performance, plasma biotin and development of toe lesions in developing gilts. Corn-soybean meal diets were fed from weaning to 92 kg body weight. Gilts were housed on expanded-metal floors to 50 kg body weight and on partially slatted concrete floors until completion of the trials. Feedlot performance, hair and structural soundness scores were not different (P greater than .10) between NB and SB gilts. Plasma biotin (PB) levels were elevated (P less than .01) when supplemental biotin was included in the diet. Gilts consuming SB diets had fewer (P less than .01) toe lesions/gilt and lower (P less than .01) toe lesion severity scores/gilt compared with gilts fed NB diets. Heel-horn erosion and heel cracks were the most frequent toe lesions observed. Fewer gilts (P less than .01) developed side-wall toe cracks when fed SB diets. Supplemental biotin reduced the frequency of individual toes containing heel-horn erosion (P less than .10), heel cracks (P less than .05) and side-wall toe cracks (P less than .05) with the severity of these lesions not affected (P greater than .10) by supplemental biotin. These results suggest that biotin levels in corn-soybean meal diets are adequate for feedlot performance, and that supplemental biotin can improve hoof integrity, but will not prevent toe lesions.  相似文献

Thirty-six Landrace x Large White cross boars were selected from litters with either high or low estimated breeding values for 150-d paired testis weight. Blood samples were taken via jugular venipuncture at eight ages (42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112, 126 and 140 d). At each sampling age, nine blood samples were taken at 30-min intervals. Luteinizing hormone (LH) was determined on the individual serum samples. Serum samples from each boar at each age were pooled and concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol-17 beta (E2) and testosterone (T) were determined. Paired testis width, testis length and body weight were measured at 98, 112, 126 and 140 d of age. Backfat probe, weights of excised testes and histological data on testes were obtained at 140 d of age. Boars with high testis weight (HTW) were heavier (P less than .05), had higher adjusted backfat probes (P less than .01) and had consistently larger in situ testis measurements (P less than .01) than did low testis weight (LTW) boars. Boars with HTW had heavier (P less than .01) testes and epididymides at 140 d of age. They also had a higher percentage of seminiferous tubules in which spermatogenesis was present (P less than .05), a larger percentage of tubules with a lumen (P less than .05) and tubules had a larger mean diameter (P less than .01) than did those of boar with LTW. Adjustment of in situ testis measurements and excised testis weights for body weight reduced line differences by less than 20%. A rise in LH concentrations occurred at approximately 100 d of age. Boars with HTW had higher (P less than .05) and more variable (P less than .01) LH concentrations than did boars with LTW. Boars with HTW also had higher maximum concentrations of LH during the pubertal rise (P less than .01) and these concentrations tended to reach maximum levels at younger ages. Concentrations of T increased in a fashion that was nearly linear with age (P less than .01) and tended to be higher for the boars with HTW (P less than .10). Concentrations of E2 changed little from 42 to 84 d of age but increased steadily thereafter. A cooperative regional study (S-145) involving 586 farrowings was conducted at five state experiment stations (Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia) to determine the influence of feeding elevated Ca and P levels during growth and development on general reproductive efficiency and longevity of confined, housed females kept for three consecutive parities. Two dietary Ca and P levels (100 vs 150% of 1979 NRC-recommended amounts) were fed ad libitum from weaning to 100 kg. A diet containing .8% Ca and .6% P was limit-fed to all gilts and to all sows during gestation and lactation. Growth rate and feed efficiency from weaning to 100 kg were similar (P greater than .10) for gilts fed 100 vs 150% Ca and P levels. A similar total number of litters (292 vs 294) was farrowed by each previous treatment group. From the previously-fed-100% Ca and P group, 78 and 65% of the sows that completed the first parity completed the second and third farrowing, respectively. Similarly, from the previously-fed-150% Ca and P group, 81 and 57% completed the second and third farrowing, respectively. Across all locations, total pigs born, live pigs born, stillborns, birth weight, number and weight of pigs at 21 d of age, sow weight at 110 d of gestation and at weaning did not differ (P greater than .10) between the two previously fed sow groups. The influence of supplementing 0 (NB) or 440 (SB) micrograms biotin/kg to corn- or wheat-based diets on toe lesions, hair characteristics and structural soundness in 116 crossbred female swine was studied from selection (100 kg) until completion of four parities. Gilts that had been previously fed corn-soybean meal diets with 0 or 220 micrograms supplemental biotin/kg diet during growth and development, remained on either the biotin unsupplemented or supplemented diet. Females were housed in buildings containing partially slatted and solid concrete floors. Toe, hair and soundness evaluations were made at a mean age of 240, 521, 732, 916 and 1,090 d. Type of grain fed did not influence (P greater than .10) any response criteria evaluated. Six types of toe lesions were observed across all dietary treatments and varied in severity from minor to very severe. The percentage of females with heel cracks, heel-horn junction cracks and side-wall horn cracks was reduced (P less than .01) when females were fed SB diets. Females fed SB diets had fewer (P less than .001) total lesions, heel cracks, heel-horn junction cracks, side-wall horn cracks and white-line horn cracks (P less than .03) compared with females consuming NB diets. In general, biotin supplementation was more effective in reducing the number and percentage of toe lesions in multiparous sows compared with gilts and primiparous sows. Biotin supplementation increased (P less than .001) the number of hairs/cm2 skin and improved (P less than .001) hair scores. Crossbred (Chester White X Yorkshire X Duroc) boars were used to evaluate the effects of feeding a progestogen (altrenogest) on body growth, endocrine function (determined during feeding and after withdrawal of altrenogest), carcass composition, boar odor and testicular function (determined after a 30-d withdrawal from altrenogest). Boars from 18 litters were assigned at 12 wk of age to three treatments: 1) 18 control boars; 2) 18 boars fed altrenogest (20 mg/day) for 6 wk from 15 to 21 wk of age, followed by 30 d with no treatment; and 3) 18 boars castrated at 2 wk of age (barrows). Daily gains were greater (P less than .05) in boars fed altrenogest than in barrows through 21 wk of age but were lower (P less than .05) than those of control boars and barrows during the 30-d withdrawal period. Boars fed altrenogest weighed less (P less than .05) than control boars and barrows at 25 wk of age (at slaughter). Both groups of boars were similar in percentage of muscle and had less (P less than .05) backfat than barrows, whereas control boars had the largest (P less than .05) loineye areas. Based on evaluations by a trained sensory panel, intensity of boar odor in fat samples was similar for both groups of boars and was greater (P less than .05) than that for barrows. This study was conducted to determine whether an antimicrobially induced (ASP-250) increase in serum IGF-I was the result of differences in feed intake. Serum IGF-I concentrations were measured in crossbred pigs that were fed a control diet or a diet supplemented with ASP-250 either for ad libitum consumption or limited to 85% of the control pigs' consumption. The pigs that consumed either diet ad libitum, control or ASP-250, consumed similar quantities of feed. The ASP-250 ad libitum-intake pigs had serum IGF-I concentrations that were greater (P<.01) than those of their ad libitum-intake control littermates. Similarly, the ASP-250 limit-fed pigs had serum IGF-I concentrations that were greater (P<.01) than those of the controls. Although the serum IGF-I concentrations of pigs fed the ASP-250-supplemented diet for ad libitum intake were greater than the serum IGF-I concentrations of the pigs limit-fed the ASP-250-supplemented diet, the differences were not significant (P<.08). The ASP-250-fed pigs had higher serum IGF binding protein (BP)-3 concentrations than did their control littermates (P<.003). A time course of antimicrobially induced alterations in serum IGF-I concentrations revealed that the effect of increased serum IGF-I levels in ASP-250-supplemented pigs (P<.02) was observed within 4 d and was maintained throughout the 4-wk study. These findings show that feed intake is not responsible for the increase in serum IGF-I observed with ASP-250 supplementation. Additionally, the antimicrobially induced increase in serum IGF-I concentrations occurs within a few days after initiation of the treatment.  相似文献

Eighteen Quarter Horse and Paint weanling colts were assigned to two treatments, either limit or ad libitum feeding. Nutrient digestibilities of diets were evaluated between 6 and 12 mo, 12 and 18 mo and 18 and 24 mo of age. From 6 to 12 mo, energy digestibility (64 to 68%) was unaffected by feed intake level. Ad libitum-fed horses had energy digestibilities 9 to 10% greater (P less than .05) than limit-fed horses between 12 and 24 mo of age, but adjustment for DM intake removed these differences. Limit-fed, mature ponies used dietary energy similarly to growing horses from 6 to 18 mo of age, but they used digested dietary energy more efficiently (P less than .05) than young horses at 24 mo of age. Ad libitum-fed horses digested more (P less than .05) dietary protein than limit-fed horses between 12 and 24 mo of age, but adjustment for DM intake removed these differences. True digestibilities of dietary Ca were estimated at 71 to 42% among periods, whereas true digestibilities of dietary P ranged from 52 to 6%. Sufficient P was absorbed by all horses between 6 and 18 of age, but by 24 mo of age horses were in negative P balance despite an apparently adequate P intake. Using regression analyses, daily endogenous fecal Ca and P were predicted to be 36 and 18 mg/kg body weight, respectively.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding regimen and group size on nutrient (N, Lipid, Ca, P) balance measurements with weanling swine. Treatments imposed were 1) one pig pair-fed to 90% of treatment 3, 2) three pigs pair-fed to 90% of treatment 3 and 3) three pigs with ad libitum access to their diet. A total of 28 barrows weaned at 21 d of age (initial BW 5.9 kg) were allotted by weight and litter in a randomized complete block design with repeated measurements over time to the three treatments in four replicates. The pigs were placed in .6-m x 1.13-m stainless steel metabolism crates and fed the same experimental diet for an initial 4-d adjustment period. This was followed by a 5-d collection of urine and feces with a 2-d interval between collection periods each week of a 4-wk postweaning period. When feed was restricted, N intake, urine N, fecal N and retained N were similar whether pigs were fed as singles or in groups of three. Individually fed pigs had a higher urinary Ca but lower urinary P compared with those fed in groups of three. Lipid and P retention values were similar for individual and group-penned, restricted-fed animals. Pigs provided ad libitum access to feed had greater weight gains and nutrient intakes, excretions (urine, fecal) and retentions (P less than .01) than pigs that were limit-fed. Similar responses among treatments occurred each week of the 4-wk trial. These results suggest that effective weekly balance data can be collected each week sequentially with 21-d weanling pigs penned in groups and allowed to consume feed ad libitum, a situation more similar to natural nursery conditions.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 31, 24, and 17 mature, pregnant Simmental x Angus cows (initial BW = 662.0 +/- 10.4 kg) in each of 3 yr were used to determine the efficacy of stockpiled orchardgrass, limit-fed corn, or ad libitum hay for maintaining cows in mid- to late gestation, respectively. In Exp. 2, 24 mature, pregnant crossbred cows (initial BW = 677.7 +/- 9.4 kg) per treatment in each of 3 yr were used to determine the efficacy of stockpiled orchardgrass, limit-fed corn, or ad libitum hay for maintaining cows in late gestation and early lactation, respectively. Each year, cows were assigned to treatment by BW. From November to February or from January to April, respectively, nutritional needs for mid- to late gestation (Exp. 1) or late gestation and early lactation (Exp. 2) were met either by 1) rotating cows on approximately 15.2 or 21.7 ha of predominantly orchardgrass pasture, set aside and fertilized in late August, 2) limit-feeding approximately 5.8 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.1 kg of a pelleted supplement, and 1.2 kg of hay daily, or 3) ad libitum feeding of round-baled hay. During extreme weather conditions, cows grazing stockpiled orchardgrass were limit-fed a grain-based diet. Postcalving weight (P < 0.10) was greatest for limit-fed cows in Exp. 1 and lowest for cows grazed on stockpiled orchardgrass; cows given ad libitum access to hay were intermediate in weight and did not differ from cows limit-fed or cows grazed on stockpiled orchardgrass (641.8, 657.4, and 634.0 kg, respectively). Calving date, calf birth and weaning weight, and conception rate did not differ among treatments (P > 0.15) in Exp. 1. In Exp. 2, weight at weaning did not differ among treatments (P > 0.17); however, postcalving weight (P < 0.01) was greatest for cows given ad libitum access to hay, intermediate for limit-fed cows, and lowest for cows grazed on stockpiled orchardgrass (674.8, 652.4, and 624.5 kg). Body condition score at any time point did not differ among treatments (P > 0.38), nor did calving date, calf birth and weaning weights, and conception rate (P > 0.12). Because of the few differences in cow performance, selection of energy sources for beef cows can be made based on economics. The cost to feed a cow hay in early to mid-gestation was nearly double that of limit-feeding the corn-based diet or grazing stockpiled orchardgrass. Because of lower quality pastures, the cost to graze cows on stockpiled orchardgrass during late gestation and early lactation was not as cost effective as limit feeding a corn-based diet.  相似文献
