Critical weight loss, as defined by ≥5% decrease in body weight, has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in human patients with cancers of the head and neck. Weight loss has anecdotally been reported to occur frequently in veterinary patients undergoing radiation therapy and is hypothesized to be more severe in patients with cancers of the head and neck, along with those hospitalized during radiation therapy. The primary objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of critical weight loss in canine cancer bearing patients undergoing either definitive or palliative radiation protocols and to determine if weight changes were associated with radiation toxicity, tumour location or patient hospitalization status. Data from 47 dogs who underwent definitive and 43 dogs who underwent palliative radiation protocols at the University of Tennessee were included for analysis. Dogs were categorized based on tumour location (head/neck or other), hospitalization status (boarded or non‐boarded) and radiation toxicity score. Weight recorded at the start of treatment, midway through treatment and at the final treatment was used for analysis. No significant differences were found in regard to weight change over time, location or hospitalization status when evaluated for both protocols. Overall, 5/90 dogs (5.5%) lost 5% or more of their body weight during therapy, and 7/90 dogs (7.7%) gained 5% or more of their body weight. The results of the current study suggest that critical weight loss occurs in a small percentage of canine patients undergoing radiation therapy, contrary to what is often anecdotally reported.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between anxiety and pain scores using the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale–Short Form (CMPS-SF) in dogs.StudyProspective observational study.AnimalsA group of 18 dogs undergoing surgical management of stifle disease.MethodsPreoperatively dogs were scored using the CMPS-SF, the anxiety behaviour-based Reactivity Evaluation Form (REF), a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for anxiety and a sedation score. Assessments of pain, anxiety and sedation were repeated approximately 2–6 hours postoperatively. Dogs were divided into groups based on preoperative REF (‘Low REF’ and ‘High REF’), and VAS scores (‘Low VAS’ and ‘High VAS’). Scores (CMPS-SF, REF, VAS and sedation) were compared between groups using Mann–Whitney U tests. Preoperative and postoperative CMPS-SF, REF and VAS scores were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Relationships between anxiety and CMPS-SF scores were assessed using a Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Scores are presented as median (range). A p value of < 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsWhen divided based on REF, CMPS-SF scores did not differ between groups preoperatively [Low REF: 2 (0–3), High REF: 2 (1–3); p = 0.509] or postoperatively [Low REF: 3 (2–5), High REF: 3 (2–5); p = 0.624]. When divided based on VAS, CMPS-SF scores did not differ between groups preoperatively [Low VAS: 2 (0–2), High VAS: 2 (1–3); p = 0.215] or postoperatively [Low VAS: 3 (2–5), High VAS: 3 (2–5); p = 1]. Postoperative REF [pre: 4.5 (2–8), post: 5 (4–10); p = 0.0105] and CMPS-SF scores [pre: 2 (0–3), post: 3 (2–5); p = 0.0318] increased significantly compared with preoperative scores.Conclusions and clinical relevanceNo apparent relationship exists between baseline anxiety levels and CMPS-SF scores. Understanding the influence of anxiety when using the CMPS-SF is important when assessing pain in dogs. Anxiety and pain may increase postoperatively in dogs undergoing orthopaedic surgery.  相似文献

Pleuritic chest pain from bacterial pneumonia is often reported in human medicine. However, studies investigating pain associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) are lacking. The objectives of this study were to assess if bacterial pneumonia elicits a pain response in calves with experimentally induced BRD and to determine the analgesic effects of transdermally administered flunixin. A total of 26 calves, 6–7 mo of age, with no history of BRD were enrolled into one of three treatment groups: 1) experimentally induced BRD + transdermal flunixin at 3.3 mg/kg twice, 24 h apart (BRD + FTD); 2) experimentally induced BRD + placebo (BRD + PLBO); and 3) sham induction + placebo (CNTL + PLBO). Calves induced with BRD were inoculated with Mannheimia haemolytica via bronchoalveolar lavage. Outcomes were collected from −48 to 192 h post-treatment and included serum cortisol, infrared thermography, mechanical nociceptive threshold, substance P, kinematic gait analysis, visual analog scale (VAS), clinical illness score, computerized lung score, average activity and rumination level, prostaglandin E2 metabolite, plasma serum amyloid A, and rectal temperature. Outcomes were evaluated using either a generalized logistic mixed model for categorical variables or a generalized linear mixed model for continuous variables. Right front force differed by treatment (P = 0.01). The BRD + PLBO had lower mean force applied to the right front limb (85.5 kg) compared with BRD + FTD (96.5 kg; P < 0.01). Average VAS differed by a treatment by time interaction (P = 0.01). The VAS scores differed for BRD + PLBO at −48 (3.49 mm) compared with 168 and 192 h (13.49 and 13.64 mm, respectively) (P < 0.01). Activity for BRD + PLBO was higher at −48 h (27 min/h) compared with 48, 72, 120, and 168 h (≤ 22.24 min/h; P < 0.01). Activity differed by a treatment by time interaction (P = 0.01). Activity for BRD + FTD was higher at −48 and 0 h (28.2 and 28.2 min/h, respectively) compared to 48, 72, 96, and 168 h (≤23.7 min/h; P < 0.01). Results show a combination of reduced activity levels, decreased force on the right front limb, and increased VAS pain scores all support that bacterial pneumonia in cattle is painful. Differences in right front force indicate that flunixin transdermal may attenuate certain pain biomarkers in cattle with BRD. These findings suggest that BRD is painful and analgesic drugs may improve the humane aspects of care for cattle with BRD.  相似文献

Abstract: Cats are popular pets, but until recently, their peri-operative and traumatic pain had been seriously underestimated and under-treated. The lack of treatment stems from difficulty in recognizing pain, lack of licensed analgesic drugs, fear of toxic side effects, and lack of information specific to cats. Fortunately, in the last decade, many advances have been made in feline analgesia. It is now obvious that because of the cat's unique metabolism, species-specific studies are essential. Opioids are the mainstay of any analgesic protocol for acute pain and can be used with few side effects. Other drugs that can be utilized include the α2-agonists, local anesthetics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Pain assessment in cats is challenging and developing, and validating pain scoring systems remains an important goal. The information in this article will help the critical care and emergency clinician formulate a safe and effective analgesic plan for feline patients.  相似文献

This study examined whether amifostine (WR-2721) could attenuate memory impairment and suppress hippocampal neurogenesis in adult mice with the relatively low-dose exposure of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). These were assessed using object recognition memory test, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling assay, and immunohistochemical markers of neurogenesis [Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX)]. Amifostine treatment (214 mg/kg, i.p.) prior to irradiation significantly attenuated the recognition memory defect in ARS, and markedly blocked the apoptotic death and decrease of Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells in ARS. Therefore, amifostine may attenuate recognition memory defect in a relatively low-dose exposure of ARS in adult mice, possibly by inhibiting a detrimental effect of irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate the analgesic potential of the centrally acting analgesics tramadol, morphine and the novel analgesic tapentadol in a pre-clinical research model of acute nociceptive pain, the tail-flick model in dogs.Study designProspective part-randomized pre-clinical research trial.AnimalsFifteen male Beagle dogs (HsdCpb:DOBE), aged 12–15 months.MethodsOn different occasions separated by at least 1 week, dogs received intravenous (IV) administrations of tramadol (6.81, 10.0 mg kg?1), tapentadol (2.15, 4.64, 6.81 mg kg?1) or morphine (0.464, 0.681, 1.0 mg kg?1) with subsequent measurement of tail withdrawal latencies from a thermal stimulus (for each treatment n = 5). Blood samples were collected immediately after the pharmacodynamic measurements of tramadol to determine pharmacokinetics and the active metabolite O-demethyltramadol (M1).ResultsTapentadol and morphine induced dose-dependent antinociception with ED50-values of 4.3 mg kg?1 and 0.71 mg kg?1, respectively. In contrast, tramadol did not induce antinociception at any dose tested. Measurements of the serum levels of tramadol and the M1 metabolite revealed only marginal amounts of the M1 metabolite, which explains the absence of the antinociptive effect of tramadol in this experimental pain model in dogs.Conclusions and clinical relevanceDifferent breeds of dogs might not or only poorly respond to treatment with tramadol due to low metabolism of the drug. Tapentadol and morphine which act directly on μ-opioid receptors without the need for metabolic activation are demonstrated to induce potent antinociception in the experimental model used and should also provide a reliable pain management in the clinical situation. The non-opioid mechanisms of tramadol do not provide antinociception in this experimental setting. This contrasts to many clinical situations described in the literature, where tramadol appears to provide useful analgesia in dogs for post-operative pain relief and in more chronically pain states.  相似文献

Prognosis for unresectable canine malignant melanoma (MM) is typically poor, and therapeutic approaches remain largely palliative. A bi‐institutional trial was conducted to compare efficacy and safety of radiation therapy (RT) and RT with post‐radiation temozolomide in dogs with chemotherapy‐naïve, measurable MM. RT consisted of 5 × 6 Gy fractions over 2.5 weeks. Dogs whose owners wished to pursue chemotherapy received adjuvant oral temozolomide (60 mg m?2 for 5 days every 28 days). Fifteen dogs were treated with RT only (Group 1) and 12 dogs subsequently received temozolomide (Group 2). Overall response rate was similar between Group 1 (86.7%) and Group 2 (81.1%). Median time to progression (TTP) was significantly longer in Group 2 (205 days) compared to Group 1 (110 days; p = 0.046). Survival time was not significantly different between groups. Both treatments were well tolerated. Post‐radiation temozolomide has a good safety profile, and may improve TTP in MM when compared to coarse fractionated RT.  相似文献

Cancer stem‐like cells (CSCs) are self‐renewing cells comprising a small subpopulation in tumours, and generate differentiated progeny through asymmetric division. It has been shown that CSCs are resistant to ionizing radiation, and this feature could be one of the mechanisms of tumour recurrence after radiation therapy. Much attention has been focused on to target CSCs; however, difficult of isolating CSCs and lack of knowledge on their radiosensitivity have limited this kind of research in veterinary medicine. In the present study, sphere‐forming cells (SC), cultured using sphere formation method, were isolated from four type of canine tumour cell lines and evaluated if they have CSCs‐like properties by expression of CSCs markers (real‐time polymerase chain reaction) and capacity of tumorigenesis (xenograft transplantation in nude mice), and were assessed radiosensitivity (clonogenic survival assay) and DNA repair kinetics (immunofluorescence staining for p53‐binding protein 1) after X‐ray irradiation in comparison with the corresponding normal adherent culture cells (AC). All SCs were isolated using sphere formation and showed high gene expression of CD133 and tumorigenic ability as compared with AC. All SCs were significantly resistant against X‐ray irradiation as compared with AC. In addition, the amount of DNA double‐strand breaks after X‐ray irradiation were significantly lower in SC compared with the corresponding AC. These results indicate that SC isolated through sphere formation possess CSCs‐like characteristics and CSCs are important factor that affect radiosensitivity in canine tumours. In addition, radioresistance of CSCs may depend on reaction of DNA double‐strand break after X‐ray exposure.  相似文献

Surgical resection of solid tumours, especially in early stages of disease, remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment in dogs and cats. There are numerous publications that show a strong association between local tumour control and outcome. To achieve local control in some cases radiation therapy and surgery are combined, with radiation therapy being delivered in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting. The objective of the study was to report acute toxicity and surgical site complication data in dogs that received a short-course pre-operative (SCPO) radiation therapy protocol, followed by surgical excision for various solid tumours. Medical records were reviewed, and data was analysed retrospectively. Dogs were included if a dermal or subcutaneous solid tumour was treated with SCPO radiation therapy and then was resected on the last day of radiation or 2–3 weeks later. A total of 34 dogs with 35 primary tumours were included. Acute radiation toxicity was diagnosed in 14 sites (40%). VRTOG scores were grade 1 in 50%, grade 2 in 43%, and grade 3 in 7%. Surgical site complications were identified in 17% of dogs with an overall surgical site infection rate of 11%. According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, two dogs required medical intervention (grade 2), 1 dog required surgical intervention under general anaesthesia (grade 3b), and 1 dog died as a result of complications (grade 5). Logistic regression analysis found that anatomic site was significantly associated with complications, where tumours located on the extremity was protective (P = .02; OR 0.06).  相似文献

The relationships of live animal muscular and skeletal scores and ultrasound measurements and carcass conformation and fat scores with carcass composition and value were determined using 74 bulls. The animals consisted of 53 late-maturing breed crosses and 21 Holstein–Friesian slaughtered at 13 to 17 months of age. They were offered concentrates ad-libitum and 1 kg of grass silage dry matter per head daily for the final 139 day finishing period. Live animal muscular and skeletal scores and ultrasonic muscle and fat depth measurements of the M. longissimus dorsi were recorded at 8 to 12 months of age and pre-slaughter. Following slaughter, carcasses were classified for conformation and fatness and the right side of each carcass was dissected into meat, fat and bone. Carcass conformation and fat scores, (scale 1 to 15) ranged from 4.7 to 14.4 and 2.7 to 11.5, respectively. Pre-slaughter muscular scores showed significant positive correlations with kill-out proportion (r = 0.82), carcass meat proportion (r = 0.72), conformation score (r = 0.94), carcass value (r = 0.72), and the proportion of high-value meat cuts in the carcass (r = 0.49), and significant negative correlations with carcass bone (r = − 0.89) and fat (r = − 0.32) proportions. The associations between pre-slaughter muscular scores and proportion of high-value cuts in meat, perinephric plus retroperitoneal fat and fat score were not significant. Corresponding correlations with muscular scores at 8 to 12 months of age were generally lower than those recorded pre-slaughter. Correlations of ultrasound muscle depth with carcass traits showed similar trends but lower values to those obtained using the muscular scoring procedure. Ultrasound fat depth pre-slaughter was positively correlated with carcass fat proportion (r = 0.56) and fat score (r = 0.54), and negatively correlated with carcass meat proportion, proportion of high-value cuts and carcass value. Correlations with other carcass traits were not significant. Correlations of live animal skeletal scores with carcass traits were generally non-significant. A one unit (scale 1–15) increase in carcass conformation score was associated with significant increases in kill-out proportion, meat yield and carcass value of 11.9 g/kg, 11.9 g/kg and 5.8 cent/kg, respectively. Corresponding effects for a one unit change in fat score were − 2.9 g/kg, − 11.1 g/kg and − 4.9 c/kg. In conclusion, live animal muscular scores and ultrasound measurements and carcass conformation and fat scores were shown to be useful predictors of carcass composition and value.  相似文献

Purpose To determine whether ultraviolet (UV) radiation can modulate expression and regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) in the canine cornea and to examine the expression of MMPs in canine chronic superficial keratitis (CSK). Methods Immunohistochemistry for MMP‐2 and MMP‐9 was performed on samples of CSK. In vitro, canine corneal epithelial cell (CEC) and stromal cell cultures were exposed to UV‐irradiation. Following 2, 8 or 24 h, cells were harvested. MMP expression was examined by zymography, and RT‐PCR was used to examine expression of Slug and Snail. CEC cultures treated with an EGFR inhibitor or a p38 inhibitor were UV‐exposed and harvested 24 h later to examine expression of MMPs, Slug and Snail. Results Canine CSK had increased immunopositivity for both MMP‐2 and MMP‐9 compared to normal canine corneas. In vitro, CEC and stromal cell cultures exposed to UV showed generally increased expression of MMP‐2, ‐9, Slug, and Snail; this response was dose and time dependent. Inhibition of the EGFR pathway did not prevent increased expression of MMP‐2, ‐9, Slug or Snail in UV‐exposed CEC; however, p38 inhibition did attenuate UV induction. Conclusions We have found increased expression of MMPs in clinical samples of CSK compared to normal corneas. In addition, we have shown that there is a temporal association and dose dependency between UV exposure and production of MMPs, Slug, and Snail. These findings suggest that overexpression of MMPs due to UV‐exposure may be linked to changes in the cornea that allow an influx of inflammatory cells and vascularization.  相似文献

Objective To develop a method for objective assessment of equine post‐operative pain. Study design Prospective nonblinded clinical study. Animals Twelve adult horses: Group 1 (G1, n = 6), admitted for arthroscopy (under general anaesthesia, with multimodal analgesia); Group 2 (G2, n = 6), ‘pain free’ controls. Materials and methods Horses were filmed continuously (CVI, time‐lapse video recorder) over 72 hours, from 24 hours pre‐surgery (PS) to 48 hours post‐recovery (PR) (G1), and over 24 hours (G2). Activity budgets were determined from 24 to 0 hours PS, 0–24 and 24–48 hours PR (G1) and for 24 hours (G2). Using direct observation (DO), active behaviours and postures were recorded at set time points PS and PR (G1) and at two time points (morning/evening) (G2). Heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) were recorded simultaneously. Statistical analysis investigated within‐group and between‐group time‐related changes in behaviour, HR and RR. Results There was no difference in HR or RR between G1 and G2 at any time point. Anaesthetic ‘hangover’ and hunger‐related activity modulated behaviour from 0 to 6 hours PR, when abnormal postures and locomotion occurred in all G1 horses, but no G2 horses. Compared with G1 (0–24 hours PR), G2 spent more time eating (t = ?3.34, p < 0.01), more time at the front of the stable (t = ?2.42, p < 0.05), and less time exhibiting ‘abnormal’ behaviour (U = 56, p < 0.01). Comparing PS and PR behaviour, G1 spent less time exploring from 24 to 48 hours PR (t = 3.49, p < 0.05), less time in sternal recumbency (t = ?3.8, p < 0.05) and less time moving (t = 3.19, p < 0.05). Horses tended (p < 0.07) to spend less time positioned in the front of the stable PR (less from 24 to 48 hours PR than from 0 to 24 hours PR). Comparing PR (evening) behaviour, G2 spent more time with head above withers (U = 21.5, p < 0.01), and ears forwards (U = 22, p < 0.01). G1 showed time‐related changes (all p < 0.05) in time with lower lip tense (S = 15.8), eating (S = 17.08) and with head positioned above withers (S = 18.04). No differences in event behaviours were observed between G1 and G2. Within G1, only olfactory behaviour varied significantly with time (S = 14.52, p < 0.05). Conclusions Changes in equine behaviour suggestive of post‐operative discomfort were identified using both DO and CVI. Analysis of activity budgets may be a more sensitive method of identifying behavioural changes indicative of equine discomfort than repeated DO of specific events and postures.  相似文献

Periorbital sarcoids are a common condition in the horse and are difficult to treat due to their location and invasive nature. Radiotherapy is considered the gold standard treatment, and high dose rate brachytherapy (HDRB) may represent a safer and more effective method of delivering radiotherapy in the standing sedated horse. The objective of this retrospective clinical case series study was to describe the response rate and safety of HDRB for the treatment of periorbital sarcoids in the horse. Horses and ponies referred for HDRB treatment of confirmed periorbital sarcoids were eligible for inclusion in the study. Sarcoids were confirmed via clinical diagnosis and biopsy. Horses were given 2 fractions of 12.5 Gy per fraction, delivered a week apart, under standing sedation via a novel HDRB technique. Eight horses with periorbital sarcoids were treated with HDRB under standing sedation. A complete response occurred in all cases. No significant acute adverse effects were noted after treatment and the cosmetic result was excellent, with permanent epilation and leucotrichia the only long‐term sequelae. Follow‐up was available for between 10 and 12 months after treatment. The major limitation of this study is the lack of long‐term follow‐up and the small case numbers. It was concluded that HDRB appears to be an effective and safe method of treating periorbital sarcoids in the horse. Long‐term follow‐up is required to determine the risk of recurrence of treated lesions.  相似文献

Laser acupuncture is defined as the stimulation of traditional acupuncture points with low-intensity, non-thermal laser irradiation. We explored the clinical efficacy of a very low level diode laser wavelength 670 nm (Biolite LP020, RGM, Genoa, Italy), used to stimulate acupoints ST36 Zu San Li and TH5 Waiguan, on well-established experimental models of acute and persistent pain in the rat, e.g. acute inflammatory pain, muscle pain, visceral pain and neuropathic pain. We report the anti-edema and anti-hyperalgesia effects of laser acupuncture in models of acute inflammatory pain, e.g. CFA-induced inflammation and myofascial pain. We also indicate that spontaneous pain and thermal hyperalgesia are reduced in a neuropathic pain model, e.g. axotomy. On the contrary, no effects due to laser-acupuncture were observed on disconfort indices in a model of visceral pain, e.g. cystitis due to cyclophosphamide. We thus provide evidences that acupoints stimulation using a very low intensity laser irradiation can control pain and edema in specific experimental conditions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare three opioid agonist drugs for perioperative analgesia in cats. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, blind, controlled, randomised trial. ANIMALS: Ninety client-owned cats, weighing 3.1 (2.1-4.5) kg, aged 14.6 (6.0-84.0) months, were studied. METHODS: Seventy-six cats, scheduled for ovariectomy, received either 0.6 mg kg(-1) racemic methadone, 0.3 mg kg(-1) levo-methadone, 0.05 mg kg(-1) dextromoramide or a saline placebo IM. Behaviour and body position were assessed and scored 20 minutes later by a single 'blinded' observer. Anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with halothane. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), Fe'CO2 and SpO2 were recorded during anaesthesia. Post-operatively, pain was categorised as absent, moderate or severe, on the basis of appearance, behaviour and response to palpation of the surgical wound (pain score). Appearance, pain scores and physiological variables were monitored every 30 minutes, for a duration of 4 hours. Differences between time-dependent continuous variables were analysed using mixed models for repeated measurements. Differences in categorical, time-dependent variables were analysed using chi2-tests. Significance was set at p < or = 0.05. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in appearance after pre-anaesthetic medication. After surgery, there was no association between appearance and pain score with HR or RR. The assessment of pain depended on comparison with the placebo group, by comparing animals' reactions to wound palpation. Sixteen of the 18 cats in the placebo group and 14 of the 19 cats in the dextromoramide group showed signs of moderate-to-severe pain after surgery. In the levo-methadone group (n = 20), one animal showed pain after 60 minutes and two after 120 minutes. One cat in the racemic methadone group (n = 19) showed pain signs and behavioural changes at 60 minutes. Compared to the two methadone groups, 'rescue' analgesia was required more often in cats treated with dextromoramide or saline. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dextromoramide (0.05 mg kg(-1)) was ineffective, while racemic methadone (0.6 mg kg(-1)) and levo-methadone (0.3 mg kg(-1)) provided effective analgesia in cats following ovariectomy, without behavioural, respiratory or cardiovascular side effects.  相似文献

Nasal tumor size can change during radiation therapy (RT). The amount of peritumoral fluid (eg, mucohemorrhagic effusions) can also fluctuate. How often this occurs and the magnitude of change are unknown. Likewise, there are no data which describe dosimetric effects of these changing volumes during a course of RT in veterinary medicine. This study addresses that gap in knowledge. Using pet dogs with nasal tumors, three CT image sets were created. Different Hounsfield units were applied to the gross tumor volume (GTV) of each image set: unchanged, –1000 (AIR), –1000 (to the portion of the GTV that actually underwent volume reduction during clinical RT; REAL). Two plans were created: 18‐fraction three‐dimensional conformal RT (3DCRT) and three‐fraction intensity‐modulated stereotactic RT (IM‐SRT). For nearby normal tissues and GTV, near‐maximum doses (D2% and D5%) and volumes receiving clinically significant doses were recorded. To verify “AIR” results, thermoluminescent dosimeters recorded dose in cadavers that were irradiated using both 3DCRT and IM‐SRT plans. “AIR” scenario had ≤1.5 Gray (Gy) increases in D2% and ≤3.2 cc increases of volume. “REAL” scenario had ≤0.97 Gy increases in D5% and ≤0.55 cc increases of volume at clinically relevant doses. Both were statistical significant. Results suggest that near‐complete resolution of GTV warrants plan revision.  相似文献

Treatment protocols, treatment planning methods and tumour types in studies evaluating radiotherapy for canine brain tumours have been varied. This case series retrospectively evaluated the outcome of definitive, three‐dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D‐CRT) as either a sole modality or as an adjuvant to surgery in 31 dogs diagnosed with meningioma by histopathology (n = 10) or cross‐sectional imaging of the head (n = 21, assessed independently by two board certified radiologists). Prescribed dose ranged from 45 to 54 Gy in 2.5 to 3 Gy fractions. Median overall survival was 577 days (interquartile range = 272–829 days; range = 30–1942 days) when all deaths were considered and 906 days (interquartile range = 336–912 days; range = 101–1942 days) when only dogs dying due to meningioma were considered. No significant difference in survival time was detected for the defined clinical or imaging findings or between treatment with radiotherapy alone versus adjuvant radiotherapy, suggesting that 3D‐CRT may be a viable alternative to surgery.  相似文献
