The morphology of spermatozoa of modern Thoroughbred stallions in Japan was investigated during the breeding season. A total of 299 semen samples were collected from the penises of 16 stallions immediately after service. The rate of abnormalities in sperm heads and tails, spermatozoa with cytoplasmic droplets and slides with medusa cells to total observed slides in each stallion were 3.9 +/- 2.1%, 11.5 +/- 5.9%, 2.4 +/- 2.6% and 20.1%, respectively. The values for the area, length, width and aspect ratio of the stallion sperm head were 12.54 +/- 1.34 microm(2), 5.93 +/- 0.40 microm, 2.69 +/- 0.21 microm and 0.46 +/- 0.05, respectively. With the exception of medusa cells, the features were significantly different among the stallions (P<0.05). 相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Previous surveys of reproductive efficiency in British Thoroughbreds included only mares and stallions standing on studfarms in and around Newmarket. The present study was widened to compare Flatrace (FR) (Group A) and National Hunt (NH) (Group B) mares and stallions on studfarms throughout England. OBJECTIVES: To assess the influences of mare type, status and age, and veterinary manipulations on reproductive efficiency parameters. To compare the inherent fertility of stallions, based on singleton and twin pregnancy rates and pregnancy loss rates, in Groups A and B Thoroughbred breeding stock. METHODS: Managers of 24 FR and 9 NH public studfarms were asked to complete a questionnaire for each mated oestrous cycle shown by 2321 Group A and 1052 Group B mares throughout the 2002 mating season. Parameters such as per cycle singleton and twin pregnancy rates, and pregnancy loss rates were noted, and the success of hormone treatments to induce oestrus and ovulation assessed. The number of matings per oestrus and per pregnancy were recorded, together with the incidence and effectiveness of uterine and other veterinary treatments. The inherent fertility of 84 Group A and 43 Group B stallions in the study, as measured by the singleton and twin early pregnancy rates and the pregnancy loss rates recorded in the mares they mated, was also estimated. RESULTS: Per cycle early pregnancy (Days 13-16) was 63.2% for Group A and 65.3% for Group B mares; and 10.3% and 13.1%, respectively, of those pregnancies were twins or triplets. Early, middle and late pregnancy loss rates were 7.2% vs. 8.0% (Days 15-42), 3.6% vs. 6.1% (Days 42-1st October) and 2.7% vs. 2.1% (October-foaling), respectively. Matings per oestrus and per early pregnancy were significantly higher in Group B vs. Group A mares. For stallions that mated > or = 30 mares, overall early pregnancy rates per cycle in mares mated ranged from 30-89% across the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: No major differences in reproductive efficiency were identified between FR and NH mares and stallions. Increasing mare age was the single biggest limiting factor to an otherwise high rate of fertility in well-managed English Thoroughbreds. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: This study identified factors that influence reproductive efficiency in the Thoroughbred. 相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Capillary stress failure-induced (exercise-induced) pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) during intense running in horses is thought to involve both intravascular (i.e. mean pulmonary arterial pressure [Ppa] > 100 mmHg) and extravascular (e.g. negative inspiratory pressure swings) mechanisms. HYPOTHESIS: That inclined running would reduce breathing frequency (coupled to stride frequency) and increase tidal volume thus increasing lung volume changes and intrapleural pressure swings resulting in more pronounced EIPH. METHODS: Six Thoroughbred horses were run to volitional fatigue (incremental step test) on a level (L) and inclined (I; 10%) treadmill in random order. Pulmonary minute ventilation, arterial blood gases and mean Ppa were obtained during each run while EIPH severity was quantified via bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) 30 mins post run. RESULTS: Time to fatigue did not differ between trials (P > 0.05). At end-exercise, breathing frequency was reduced (L, 127.8 +/- 3.0; I, 122.6 +/- 2.1 breaths/min; P < 0.05) and tidal volume increased (L, 11.5 +/- 0.6; I, 13.1 +/- 0.5 L; P < 0.05) during inclined running. No differences existed in end-exercise plasma [lactate] between trials (L, 24.5 +/- 2.9; I, 26.2 +/- 3.4 mmol/l, P > 0.05); however, the mean peak Ppa was reduced during the inclined run (L, 105+5; I, 96 +/- 4 mmHg, P < 0.05). In the face of reduced Ppa, EIPH severity was increased significantly (P < 0.05) during the inclined vs. level run (L, 37.0 +/- 11.7; I, 49.6 +/- 17.0 x 10(6) red blood cells/ml BAL fluid). CONCLUSIONS: Although inclined running lowered peak Ppa, EIPH severity was increased. It is likely that this effect resulted, in part, from an altered ventilatory pattern (i.e. increased tidal volumes and associated intrapleural pressure changes). POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: This conclusion supports an important role for extravascular factors in the aetiology of EIPH. 相似文献

Reason for performing the study: Although considerable variation in per cycle pregnancy rates exists between Thoroughbred (TB) stallions, there is little information on factors that may influence this figure. Objective: To assess the influence of month, mare numbers and mating frequency on the fertility of TB stallions standing on studfarms in East Anglia, England. Methods: The daily breeding records of 31 TB stallions mating 3034 mares on 4851 occasions during the 2010 season were surveyed and related to first scan pregnancy rates. The influences of mare book size, month, number of matings per day and mating frequency or abstinence on per mating pregnancy rates were analysed. Results: The overall per mating pregnancy rate for all the stallions was 59.6%, but for individual stallions the figures ranged from 19.0% to 80.1%. The first mating occurred on 9 February and the last on 24 July and the per mating pregnancy rate per month was significantly reduced in June and July. The number of mares mated by individual stallions ranged from 15 to 161, giving a mean overall workload of 160 matings per 100 mares. The per mating pregnancy rate was not related to book size, the number of matings in the season or the mating frequency per day. However, some stallions showed differences in per mating pregnancy rate related to month or the number of ejaculations in the preceding 3 days. Conclusions: The majority of TB stallions are able to maintain good fertility despite large books of mares. However, 5 of the 31 stallions surveyed showed a per mating pregnancy rate of ≤50%. Potential relevance: This survey has identified wide differences between the per mating pregnancy rate in TB stallions. Identification of the factors involved through more comprehensive surveys would provide useful information for mare and stallion owners. 相似文献

Veterinarians commonly predict mature heart scores for yearling and 2-year-old horses to aid clients in assessing a horse's racing potential. Sixty-six thoroughbreds were assessed as a yearlings or 2-year-olds, then re-assessed as a mature horse (over the age of 3). Of these horses, 82% of the yearlings and 87% of the 2-year-olds had a correctly predicted mature heart score within one heart score range (i.e. three points). 相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the effect of transportation and restraint in a van on heart rate (HR) and HR variability in Thoroughbreds. Eight healthy Thoroughbreds were exposed to four conditions, each for a duration of 30 min: stall rest (REST), restraint inside a van (VAN), restraint inside a van with the engine running (V + E), and road transportation (TRANS). Electrocardiograms were recorded to determine HR, low-frequency (LF) power, high-frequency (HF) power, and LF/HF ratio. During TRANS, HR was significantly greater than during REST and V + E. There was a significant increase during VAN compared with REST. These results demonstrated that restraint inside the transport vehicle was one of the major stressors that may cause physiological changes during transportation. 相似文献

To test the hypothesis that the pulmonary vascular pressures of Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses behave similarly during exertion. Measurements were made on 5 Thoroughbred and 5 Standardbred horses on a treadmill at rest and during 3-minute exercise intervals at speeds predicted to produce 75%, 90%, and 100% maximal heart rate. Left forelimb acceleration, heart rate, esophageal pressure, and pulmonary artery pressure were measured continuously. Pulmonary capillary and wedge pressures were measured during intermittent occlusion of the pulmonary artery. Breathing rate and gait frequency were the fundamental frequencies of the esophageal pressure and limb acceleration signals respectively. The ratio of speed:gait frequency gave stride length. The effects of exertion and breed were evaluated using two-way analysis of variance. Exertion produced significant increases in pulmonary artery (P = 0.001), capillary (P= 0.002), and wedge (P= 0.005) pressures. No significant effect of breed was detected on pulmonary artery pressure, but at exertion pulmonary capillary and wedge pressures were 15% (P= 0.03) and 23% (P= 0.04) greater in Thoroughbreds, respectively. Treadmill speed was ~12% greater (P= 0.04), stride length was ~25% greater (P= 0.0003), gait frequency was ~10% less (P= 0.006), breathing rate was ~10% less (P= 0.001), and heart rate was ~6% less (P= 0.06) for Thoroughbreds. There was no effect of breed on inspiratory or expiratory esophageal pressure although mean esophageal pressure was ~2 mmHg greater (P= 0.03) in exercising Standardbreds. In conclusion, pulmonary capillary and wedge pressures are greater in Thoroughbreds than in Standardbreds at similar fractions of maximal heart rate. This is compatible with the higher incidence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage observed in Thoroughbreds. 相似文献

To investigate the effects of repeated atropine injection on heart rate (HR) variability in resting Thoroughbred horses, two microg/ kg of atropine as parasympathetic nervous blockade was injected intravenously every 6 min to a total of 8 microg/kg after intravenous administration of 0.2 mg/kg of propranolol as sympathetic nervous blockade. We recorded electrocardiograms and obtained the HR, then evaluated variation in HR from the power spectrum in terms of low frequency (LF, 0.01-0.07 Hz) power and high frequency (HF, 0.07-0.6 Hz) power. Administration of atropine decreased parasympathetic nervous activity in a dose-dependent manner, affecting first the LF power, then the HF power and finally HR. These responses may provide valuable information for evaluating autonomic nervous activity in Thoroughbred horses. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of the administration of 4.7-mg slow-release deslorelin implant on stallions' plasma testosterone concentrations and sexual behavior. Five control animals received a subcutaneous dose of saline solution, whereas treated animals (n = 11) received a subcutaneous implant of 4.7-mg deslorelin acetate (Suprelorin; Virbac SA, Carros, France). Testosterone plasma concentrations were monitored from April to September every week for the first 30 days, then every 2 weeks until the end of the study (98 days in total). A stimulation test using human chorionic gonadotropin was performed before and 70 days after implant administration. Behavior was assessed by asking owners to fill out a questionnaire before treatment, weekly during the study, and then at 7 months after treatment. In treated stallions, an acute increase in testosterone concentration was evident within 7 days after treatment, which was followed by a gradual decline to below basal values over the next 42 days. Results of this study support that deslorelin is biologically active in the stallion. The answers to the questionnaires showed a significant decrease (P = 0.03) in the rearing up behavior at week 3 and 4 after treatment. At the end of the study, of 11 owners, 5 asked their stallions to be reimplanted. Lacking side effects, deslorelin could be considered, in some instances, in the treatment of some behavioral problems in stallions, although there are individual variations in response, which deserve further investigations. 相似文献

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (a single intravenous injection with 0.042 mg busereline acetate) was administered to control stallions (n=5), aged stallions (n=5) and stallions with lack of libido (n=5). Jugular blood samples were taken at -10, 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 minutes after treatment and measured for luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone concentrations. A single intravenous injection of hCG (3000 IE) was given 1 day later. Venous blood samples were taken at -60, 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes after treatment and measured for the testosterone concentration. The experiment was performed in the breeding season. There was a wide variation between stallions in basal concentrations of LH and testosterone. The treatment groups all showed a significant increase in LH and testosterone concentrations after treatment with GnRH. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between the control, the lack of libido stallions and the aged stallions in the production of LH before and after stimulation with GnRH. The aged stallions had higher basal LH concentrations. GnRH induced a rise in plasma LH in all groups, but the greatest response was observed in aged stallions. No response to GnRH was seen with respect to plasma testosterone. There was an increase in plasma testosterone following hCG; however, this increase was very small in aged stallions. After stimulation with hCG the control and lack of libido stallions had a significant increase (P<0.05) in testosterone production. In conclusion, stimulation with either GnRH or hCG can be a valuable method to test whether the function of the stallion's reproductive endocrine system is optimal. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the occurrence of geometrical asymmetries in the macro-architecture of left and right femurs from Thoroughbred racehorses previously used in competitive training and racing in New South Wales, Australia. METHODS: Detailed postmortem measurements were made of 37 characteristics of left and right femurs from eleven Thoroughbred racehorses euthanased for reasons unrelated to the study. Measurements focused on articulating surfaces and sites of attachment of muscles and ligaments known to be associated with hindlimb locomotion. RESULTS: Five measurements were significantly larger in left compared to right femurs (P < 0.05). The regions showing significant differences between left and right limbs were proximal cranial and overhead medio-lateral widths, greater trochanter depth, depth of the fovea in the femoral head and distal inter-epicondylar width. CONCLUSION: The left-right differences in femoral morphology were associated with sites of muscle and ligament attachment known to be involved with hindlimb function in negotiating turns. These differences may be the result of selection pressure for racing performance on curved race tracks and/or adaptations related to asymmetrical loading of the outside hindlimb associated with repeated negotiation of turns on such tracks. 相似文献

Equine tracheal lesions have been associated with the orotracheal intubation procedure. These lesions may occur because of differences in the dimensions of the endotracheal tube and the trachea. The importance of the dimensions of the trachea for studies on respiratory mechanics and the lesions produced by the endotracheal tubes encouraged us to determine the size of trachea of the Thoroughbred horse. This study determined and compared the length and internal diameters of the tracheas from 59 Thoroughbred horses, 35 males and 34 females, weighing between 400 kg and 500 kg, and free of signs of respiratory or cardiopulmonary diseases. The tracheas were removed from the horses between 2 and 12 hours after death. The internal diameters were measured in tracheal rings one, twenty, forty and the last before the carina. The length of each trachea was measured in both the normal and extended state. The number of tracheal rings was also determined. In the unstretched trachea, the width of the last tracheal ring and the number of tracheal rings were significantly greater in males than females. The results of this study provide information for better design and manufacturing of endotracheal tubes and as basic information for further studies on equine respiratory mechanics. 相似文献
